Archbishop Gebhard
My research is based Hohensalzburg Fortress in Salzburg, Austria, built in 1077 by Archbishop
Gebhard. It is currently the largest fully preserved castle in Central Europe. It is now a tourist
attraction and is the most dominate feature of the city's skyline.
This castle was originally built for troop protection for the Imperial army of the Holy Roman
Empire. It was very small, but over a period of more than 900 years, it was transformed in many
different ways. This fortress became the city's most important defense when Archbishop Gebhard
had a conflict with Emperor Henry IV and was influenced to expand the castle in case of invasion.
The expansion continued gradually for the next few centuries, then in 1462, builders under Prince
Archbishop Burkhard III von Weißpriach, constructed the four main towers along the outer wall, a
bell tower in the northern wall, the trumpeter tower in the northeast, the kraut tower in the north and
a type of prison is the south. Prince–Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach during his term further
expanded the castle, and the beast was growing. His coadjutor ( a bishop appointed to assist a
diocesan bishop) Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg wrote descriptions of his idea of a Riess ... Show

The castle had come under siege during the German Peasants' War of in 1525 where a group of
miners and farmers tried to overthrow Prince–Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg. This
group didn't really cause really harm and the situation was defused because the group could not get
inside the castle. Another situation was during the Napoleonic Wars when the French army invaded,
but the castle was surrendered without a fight and the current archbishop fled to Vienna. Although It
had not gone through much warfare, it still holds a lot of history and records to its name and will
always stay Salzburg's most dominate feature in the

An Experience Of Odysseus In Homer's Odyssey
After our encounter with Polyphemus on Cyclops Island, we landed on an isle not too far away.
From afar, it seemed as if there were no inhabitants, but as some of my crew and I ventured further
into the forests, something seemed amiss. I had begun the exploration with nearly fifty of my crew
surrounding me, but once we had walked no more than a hundred meters, only twenty of my crew
remained by my side. I ordered for my men to halt and search the nearby woodland for the missing
crew. About an hour later, they returned with no information on the missing men. Helios and his
chariot of golden sun were dropping low in the sky, and after attempting to find our way back to our
ship, but failing to do so, we made camp with what we had in a small clearing. My remaining crew
sat close together and drew towards the fire with the fear of this thieving monster in their eyes. I had
first watch, but as I sat against a sizable tree, I felt as if there were eyes on my back. I rose and
stepped around the tree, but there was no sign of anyone watching me. ... Show more content on

I have heard your prayers, and I am here to aid you." She handed me six swords, one for each of my
men and myself, and then she was gone. I handed my men their weapons, and strode up the stairs.
My men and I hid in the shadows of the staircase as troops of faeries marched pass. I told my men
that we were going to get revenge for their fellow crewmates, and then we quietly ran to the
opposite side of the hallway. There were no more faeries around. Finding the queen in the enormous
castle was arduous, but eventually we found her. She was alone in an empty room with her back
facing to us. At first, it seemed as if she didn't notice us.
Though when we stealthily moved forward to attack, she said, "You should have left when you still
had the chance." She snapped her fingers, and my five men's necks were snapped instantly. Still, I
held up my sword and promised my fallen men that I would avenge

Jonathon Harker
Jonathon Harker, a legal practitioner is headed on a business trip to visit a noble in Transylvania,

In today's media and entertainment business between books, movies and television series the idea of
a vampire has been sexualized by their nature and superior looks. The idea of being bitten by a
vampire is pleasurable in today's time and Bram Stocker created this feeling in what seems to be
Harker's dream. Stoker mixed the horror of the Count when he rips the women off of Jonathon and
gives them a child as a snack instead and the sexual experience with the three female vampires in
Harker's fantasy dream.
8. One of the three female vampires said this to the Count after Dracula's harsh order to leave
Jonathon alone, claiming Harker as property. The quote "You yourself never loved, you never love!"
is significant because thus far in the book Dracula appears to be alone, Harker is his only contact,
the women is stating the truth that Dracula has never loved and doesn't love. He isn't capable of
loving in the state that he is in and it makes the reader think about his loneliness and unwillingness

Short Story Of An Immigrant In Ladillian
It wasn't the first time that a new baby arrived in Ladillian on the third Wednesday of the fifth month
of the odd year. Azax had paced through his entire castle since the clock had struck midnight, fearful
of the news that was to travel to him about the new arrivals that will be in town before the end of the
day. "Master," Leroy said as he came tripping into the room, "there is no news of the baby yet."
Leroy was a Boraro. His feet were created to be turned backwards so that he could fool those who
were hunting him. By his feet being backwards, he could trick his hunters to believe that he was
going in one direction but really going in another. But there was one hunter that Boraro couldn't

out of the woods where the bracken and curling ferns grow down a dirt path that lead to a small
cottage built for just one but where five dwelled miles away from the castle. Bracken wobbled up to
the front door but before he could knock, the door opened and in the doorway stood Ash. "I knew

A Synthesis Essay: A Brief Story Of Aurora
On the side of a mountain, there was a small shack that was home to a man, Titus, and his wife,
Kira, who waited many years for a child. They visited an oracle to plead that they could be blessed
with one. The priestess told them they will have a daughter, but she came with a great cost: she
would die from a cold heart. The couple returned home with mixed emotions, for they wished for a
daughter that did not have death as her fate. It was an exviful day when their daughter, Aurora, was
born. As she grew older, her parents became increasingly fritterated of the oracle's prophecy. They
sheltered her from the world, allowing her to leave the house twice a day to fetch water. Anytime

The further she traveled north the harder the wind stung her cheeks with blasts of frigid air. All the
while, Apollo watched her struggle from Mount Olympus, wishing for his music back to calm the
storm. He attempted to save her by sending out her last beacon of hope. In the distance, she noticed
a flicker of light and decided to venture towards it. By now, she was trudging through snow as she
had almost reached the North Pole. The light that Aurora had seen was a ray of sunlight that
bounced off a great ice castle, which belonged to Boreas, god of the North Wind. When he opened
the intricately chiseled door, she collapsed on him due to lack of food and exhaustion.
She woke up to the main doors of the castle slamming in Apollo's face. He came to reveal himself to
Aurora; however, Boreas had fallen in love with her, too. She rushed out of bed to discover what
was going on, but she fell to her knees in pain just as Boreas walked in.

you have healed from being in the cold. There is no need to be afraid, for I will take extra good care

Comparing Wordsworth's Ode to Duty and Elegiac Stanzas
Comparing Wordsworth's Ode to Duty and Elegiac Stanzas
A past attitude is reverted to and revised in Wordsworth's "Ode to Duty" and "Elegiac Stanzas."
Employing geographic metaphors, both celestial and earth–bound, the poems climb over rocky
Wordsworthian terrain that details his reconciliation between past and present and implications of
the future. Though vastly different stylistically‹"Ode to Duty" utilizes an antiquated verse form and
language, while "Elegiac Stanzas" is written in Wordsworth's beloved "language of men"‹and in the
internal willfulness on the poet's part to change versus reaction to external stimuli, the poems
parallel in their desires for resolution of a disarrayed soul via the calming sublime power of either an

His desire to mend his ways was brought about "Through no disturbance of my soul,/ Or strong
compunction in me wroughtŠ/ But in the quietness of thought" (33–4, 36). The poem's devotion to
an abstract concept exemplifies the willful internality of the poet's decision. This internality leads
the poet to "supplicate for thy control," an act that shifts the poem into the religious territory of
reverence. Indeed, Wordsworth subtly raises his travel conceit from the earth to the heavens. "In the
quietness of thought," a time that is often reserved for prayer, he decides that "Me this unchartered
freedom tires;/ I feel the weight of chance–desires" (37–8). The unmapped liberalism of random
urges weighs him down and bounds him to the earth; the austere and personified guardian of duty,
on the other hand, steps lightly between the earth and the sky: "Nor know we anything so fair/ As is
the smile upon thy face;/ Flowers laugh before thee on their beds/ And fragrance in thy footing
treads;/ Thou dost preserve the stars from wrong;/ And the most ancient heavens, through Thee, are
fresh and strong" (43–8). The craving "for a repose that ever is the same," a constancy that may, in
the future, hold for him "a blissful course," is made salient in the comparison to stars, long regarded
as shapers of destiny (40, 21). The "repose" here means "sleep," whereas in the fourth stanza
"reposed my trust" means

This past spring, I took the chance to travel abroad to Italy with Sterlington High School as a part of

spare to do as we pleased, our group made of entirely of students and adults from Sterlington began
up a steep, winding path to reach the castle. I remember how tiring it was to continually climb
uphill, but the various flowers and fruit trees, glowing and shining in the afternoon light, that lined
the way were definitely enough to keep me content. At

The Literary And Artistic Romanticism Movement
John Constable was a 18th and 19th century English artist whose work has coincided with the
literary and artistic Romanticism movement. His works included many painting and sketches of the
natural world and environment which was one of the hallmarks of Romantic works. A lot of his
work did not cover the theme of ruins until later in his life and especially after the death of his wife.
His oil on canvas painting, "Hadleigh Castle, The Mouth of the Thames–Morning after a Stormy
Night" depicts the ruins of a medieval stronghold known by the same name of Hadleigh Castle after
a storm has ravaged the area over night. However, it is important to note the context in which this
work was created in. In 1828, Constable's wife had passed away and this led to a shift in his own
artistic work. In addition, Constable had also been inducted into the Royal Academy but he was
criticized and scrutinized by the president of the organization which also led to a change in
Constable's style and themes. The setting of the artwork is very gloomy and somber and this has a
lot to do with these events that had taken place in his life during the creation of the piece. Yet,
despite the depressing emotions the image initially evokes, there is also this aspect of renewal and
resurrection that is created by the artwork. In an article titled Constable, John, Michael Rosenthal
from Oxford University stated, "Constable later though a 'ruin' a suitable symbol for himself, but the
iconography of this painting

Master Cat Essay
There are certain elements that can be found in all trickster tales. One of those common elements is
the appearance of gods, spirits or other supernatural beings such as fairies or trolls. In the three
trickster tales that were assigned, gods spirits and the supernatural are found. In the African trickster
tale about how stories came to be, How Stories Came to Earth, there is a supernatural element in the
form of a god. In this story, the sky god, Nyame lives high up in the sky, where he keeps all the
stories locked in a box for himself. Nyame is portrayed as a typical god, someone who is powerful
and is to be feared. In the tale, Anansi the spider, attempted to get the stories from the sky god, but
had to pay a price. "Now Anansi climbed up hi web to the sky god, Nyame, to ask for the sky god's
stories" (40). The sky god, Nyame, is one example of the supernatural in trickster tales. Another
example of the use of the supernatural is found in the tale, Coyote Steals Fire. Coyote, the main
character, was able to read minds, which was a supernatural talent that gave him advantage,
especially when fighting. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The supernatural element in this tale is displayed in the form of a character. This character is the
ogere that Master Cat tricked and eventually ate. The ogere, a mythical creature in the first place,
also has the ability to shapeshift, which classifies as another supernatural element. Master Cat goes
to the ogre's castle in order to gain control of the castle for his owner. In order to do this, he tricks
the ogre into showing off the ogre's shapeshifting abilities. " 'It has been said,' the cat stated, 'that
you have the ability to transform yourself into any animal at all. I'm told that you can, for example,
turn yourself into a lion or an elephant' " (49). The shapeshifting ogre is another great example of
the supernatural elements that are found in trickster

Photography and The Gothic
The photographs taken by Terry Evans in the collection "Heartland" show a range of perspectives of
the Midwest prairie. "Heartland" displays characteristics of the traditional Gothic through the
combination of wide landscapes and dilapidated factories. Photos from three collections portray the
transition of the untouched landscape to an overgrown and gothic scene. The first photos of the
gothic transition come from the "Prairie Images of Ground and Sky" collection. The collection
shows untouched nature that gives a feeling of the sublime. It shows wide green expanses, bathed in
warm light, that shows a raw beauty and goodness created by nature. This feeling of the sublime is a
major aspect of the gothic due to its ability to provide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This feeling is better reflected in the "Matfield Green" collection that depicts the green expanse that
is similar to the "Prairie Images of Ground and Sky" collection but also includes things such as
railroads and power lines that show that the area is populated. This collection adds an aspect of the
isolated landscape and fear of isolation because there is a sparse dotting of humans across the large
expanse that gives the viewer the knowledge that there are inhabitants around, but not seen or
directly noticed. The element of isolation in nature is demonstrated in The Mysteries of Udolpho
and The Turn of the Screw by Udolpho and the House at Bly through their setting in isolated
landscapes with weak tethers to the rest of civilization. The idea of overcoming this isolation is also
present in the novels. Emily in The Mysteries of Udolpho escapes the isolation to safety. The
Governess in The Turn of the Screw hopes to do the same by connection with the Man from Harley
Street but is not as lucky. The effect of the isolated landscape with an unknown element causes the
reader and viewer to become suspicious of their surroundings and uneasy with the sublime
landscape due to the possibility that something evil is residing within it and give a more traditional
gothic feel. The third collection that completes a gothic picture of the Midwest shows the ruins of
the prairie. "Steel Work –

Staging Hamlet for a Modern Audience
I do not agree with the comment of Hazlitt: 'There is no play that suffers so much in being
transferred to the stage' Based on performances I have seen and other plays by Shakespeare, I think
this is one of his better plays as it does not stick to guidelines. Although a long play, it has a depth to
it, that, if transferred to the stage well, is transformed from a long and winding script to a fascinating
play filled with suspense and the emotions of the characters run high. 'Hamlet', nonetheless is a
challenging script and Hamlet himself can either create the play, or destroy it, he is the key element.

Clothing And Make-Up In Edward Scissorhands
Edward Scissorhands, directed by Tim Burton is a story about a monster (or outsider) who enters
into the so called peaceful neighbourhood and disturbs the calm. the message of isolation and
alienation is shown through the colour, costume/makeup and setting that are used through the film.
The costume and make–up in "Edward Scissorhands" is used generate feeling and emotions in the
audience. There are major differences in what Edward wears and looks like and what the humans
wear and look like. The costumes guide the audience in to thinking what kind of characters the
people are and will turn out to be like. The town's people are dressed in a typical 1950's style. This
makes them look very simplistic in their ways, on the outside. The women's clothes are very bright
and overly colourful. The colours used generate the view that the townspeople are all very normal,
and everything appears to be alright on the outside. The make–up on the women accents and
highlights their look. The houses are also very bright and false looking, almost like doll houses.
Edward, in contrast, is dressed in dark clothes. The make–up used on him makes his skin look very
pale, very ghostly and pasty. His clothes are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

use of colour, the kitsch pastel colours and uniform shapes of the suburban houses differing

On the First Day of the Fifth Moon, denizens all around the castle were startled when the usually

Starry Night
Starry Night is a beautiful painting, representational in the type of art. The size of the painting is 29
in. by 36 ¼ in., and oil on canvas were the materials used. Van Gogh is using an expressive quality
and an emotionalism viewpoint. On the left side of the painting, there is a group of black lines that
curve in waves upward, coming to a point. To the lower right, there is a small town that leads up to
hills and then mountains. The painting is set at night, and the sky is a wondrous swirl of bursting
blues, greens, and a gentle yellow for the crescent moon that is in the upper right corner. Lighter
values of blue shape the outlines of large stars in the sky, though some stars are smaller than others.
Sometimes, there is a yellow dot, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This painting is fairly realistic, so as far as the type of art, the objective was met. However,
emotionalism is also an objective, because the artist imitates reality, but also draws inward for
emotion. Good balance is shown in the painting, I would say it is symmetrical. Rhythm is also well
shown, as you gaze at the painting, your eyes moving around as each part flows into another.
Emphasis is shown on the night sky and the great black figure. Proportion is difficult to describe, as
it is difficult to discern just how big the black figure really is. Variety in the mystical castle and the
quaint town is well shown. Harmony is shown in the way that parts of the painting come together.
Space, value, texture, and shape are the dominant elements of art, as stated in the analysis. I love
this work of art because I love the night so much, particularly in this painting, with its bursts of light
and color. I also love mysteries, and the structure on the left side of the painting is definitely a
mystery to me. I find that this painting is a new favorite of mine, because of its beauty. It is an

David Lockyer's War Limericks
War – it isn't desired by anyone. If we can, we try to avoid it as much as possible. But there are
times when war can't be avoided. This fighting ultimately leads to thousands of innocent lives lost –
men, women and children. We grieve their deaths, we mourn their deaths and we feel saddened by
their deaths. Poetry can help alleviate this saddened feeling. It can help us to feel happier in times of
great depression and stress. Some poems however strike the heart of war and the horrors related to
it. The poets can express their points of view on war, conscriptions or the propagandas in a dark
manner and create a gloomy atmosphere. One of these poems is part of David Lockyer's War
Limericks. As the title suggests, this poem is a limerick with sound and visual language used to
boost the poems meaning.
The theme of Lockyer's poem is the B–17, a bomber which flew for the United States Army Air
Corps in World War II. In this poem, Lockyer is trying to express his own point of view ... Show

In the poem, Lockyer is expressing the success of the B–17 bomber in World War II. The bomber
was a relatively large airframe measuring in at a wingspan of 32 metres and an overall length of 21
metres. Because of this, he compares the B–17 to a castle, saying it was "a castle in the air." He also
calls the B–17 a "flying fortress." This name again gives us a visual image of just how large this
bomber was.
Speaking of a "flying fortress," this is one example of sound language that Lockyer has used. It is a
form of alliteration and helps to flow the poem. It helps to emphasise the idea of the B–17 being a
castle in the sky. Alliteration also adds to the rhythm of a poem and in a limerick this is all the more
important. Because this poem is a limerick, it contains an AABBA rhyme and rhythm pattern.
Rhyme and rhythm in a poem are important because they provide the heartbeat of the poem to

Trickster Tales : The Trickster, Gods, Spirits, And Master...
Trickster tales enact in a tremendous amount of the history in most cultures, Africa being the most
relevant. Therefore the trickster tales passed down in varied cultures throughout generations have
much value. Some of the supplementary famous tales being How Stories came to Earth, Coyote
Steals Fire, and Master Cat. Throughout this time analyzing these stories, it has helped define a
better judgement of what a trickster in a trickster tale actually represents. Nevertheless, in the three
tales all of the protagonists are non–human, but present themselves as being capable of human
abilities and characteristics. By way of example a trait represented in copious amounts of trickster
tales is that of Gods, Spirits, and the Supernatural. An ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of "Brain Over Brawn" has to do with the cleverness of the trickster, but contains a physical
element. For example, in How Stories Came to Earth, the trickster, Kwaku Anansi, has to bring
different animals to the sky–god in order to pay for the sky–god's stories. "He poured out some
water and sprinkled it all over their nest." Anansi tricks the bees into thinking it was raining and they
had to fly into his gourd before it ruined their wings. Anansi also made a doll holding eto and put
sticky fluid from a tree on its face, so when the fairies slapped the doll their hands stuck to it. The
fairies ask the doll for some eto and it shakes it's head yes. The fairies ate some of the dolls eto, but
Anansi ignores the fairies when they thank him which angers them, so the fairies slap the doll and
their hands stick to the face and Anansi captures them. In the story, Coyote Steals Fire, the trickster,
Coyote, gambles against Thunder for fire that was kept inside of a rock. Coyote uses his gambling
and cheating skills to win the fire from Thunder. "Coyote could pull off the outer part of his body,as
if it were a blanket, so he put his skin, his pelt, his tail, his ears–all of his outside– close by Thunder,
and with the inside of his body, his vitals, moved a distance away.". Coyote pulled off the outside

The Medieval Castles Of The Middle Ages
There was time between the fall of the Roman Empire and the reformation. This was called the
middle ages. This time was crammed with war, the struggle for power, disease, and illiteracy.
Although, there was much intelligence that was sparked around this time (Castles of the Middle
Ages). The first castle was introduced in 1066. This gigantic beauty was named the Motte and
Bailey and was constructed in England (Motte and Bailey Castles). Castle designs soon spread
throughout Europe. This was a way to defend royalty and ended up being a big advantage when
used against their enemies (Middle Ages). Castles played a very significant role in this day in age
when it came to their economic and social role and their military. They were very specifically ...

It was dark, cold, and even smelly. It was consistently filled with busy work, and not very

The fireplaces filled the rooms with smoke, the only lights used were from lights that flickered, the
furniture was damp, and the floors were bare stone and sometimes covered with the skin of animals.
In this day of age, it was better to be living in a gloomy, gross place than being without defense

Mother Gaea Alternate Ending
Apollo paced around in his castle muttering.
" I need Mother Gaea to help me with my horses. How come she never pays attention to me?"
Apollo complained. Meanwhile, Artemis was jumping up and down with jubilation.
" I did it! I did it!" Artemis exclaimed. On her worktable was the very first deer.
"Oh, I'm so proud of you!" cooed Mother Gaea. It just so happened that that was the exact moment
that Apollo came to Artemis workshop to complain. Furious with jealousy, Apollo screamed,
" You will learn to respect me, Mother, be it tomorrow or in a million years. All you will know, see,
and be proud of is me!". Poof! With that he disappeared in a blinding light. Once back at his castle,
Apollo planned furiously about the way he would gradually and inconspicuously get rid of of his
annoying twin sister, Artemis, and claim all of Mother Gaea's attention. He, the sun would be the
sole object in the sky after Artemis, the moon, was abolished. First he needed to change the mortals

The story of Dracula consists of many genres that it can be classified as, some of them being
adventure, fantasy, horror and gothic fiction. The writing style of Bram Stoker is unique and he uses
any word to his advantage, describing the novel and painting a picture for the reader. The graphic
description helps readers to imagine the place and make it seem as if they were there in person. The
time–period of which this story was written and based upon, was in the mid–Victorian era (1850–
1870). In the novel, the setting changes a lot over the course of the story, but it is predominantly set
in Transylvania, which is now inside the country of Romania.

Castle Descriptive Writing
Silent. At the edge of the sky there was a magnificent white patch, a turning page, catching the sun.
The rest was ivory grey, with a subtle hint of mauve, just enough to announce the coming sunset.
Scanning the horizon were the white cotton balls on cerulean satin, with a subtle layer of dove grey
underneath, which was thin enough to let the light through. Stood there like a ghost, a silent
observer of the venerable castle, and the clouds. The colossal mountains were shielding the inferior

The azure roof was coated and concealed by the thick opaque dust. The roof was as dusty as an

Comparison Of Banquo And Fleance
The sun began to set on the hills and darkness crept across the land. It was not just the darkness of
night coming, it was also from black clouds that were invading the sky. A strong wind started
blowing and lighting started to flash across the sky. In that very moment , Fleance and Banquo felt
threatened. The storm was a warning about danger to their lives. Banquo and Fleance decided to
return back to the castle which was like a dark mountain in the distance. They rode quickly but
because of the strong wind and the amount of lightning going around Banquo and Fleance, the
horses got tired very easily.
Fleance looked very pale. He was young, only about fifteen and was not used to the sounds of battle
raging in the sky. But Banquo on the other hand was a soldier who had seen many wars. The
explosions of thunder and flashes of lightening did not scare him. He looked at Fleance with a
comforting solid bright stare. The flaming sphere had completely disappeared from Banquo and
Fleance's sight when suddenly three men riding a horse as fast as the wind came rushing towards

Gothic Elements In Bram Stoker's Dracula
Bram Stoker's Dracula is a prime example of a piece of gothic literature, particularly in the
description of Count Dracula's castle. While gothic literature can contain a vast number of elements,
some of the most common ones include a setting in a castle and a mysterious, gloomy atmosphere
(Harris, 2015). At the end of the first chapter of Dracula, protagonist Jonathan Harker describes
Count Dracula's castle abode as "... the courtyard of a vast ruined castle, from whose tall black
windows come no ray of light, and whose broken battlements showed a jagged line against the
moonlit sky" (Stoker, 11). This description encompasses two elements of gothic literature, the two
aforementioned elements, within the same sentence. The novel continues to ... Show more content

The typical answers would be a crucifix, sunlight or mirrors, and garlic. All three of these
"traditional" methods are mentioned in Dracula, and are mentioned as foreshadowing, allowing
readers to draw their own conclusions that Dracula is a vampire. When Jonathan Harker is
beginning his journey to Count Dracula's castle, the wife of his hotel landlord gives him a crucifix to
ward off evil (Stoker, 4). Though Jonathan sees crucifixes as "idolatrous" according to his religion,
he wears the crucifix to appease the old woman (Stoker, 4). This foreshadowing implies that the old
woman knows of the true nature of the Count. As Jonathan notes the opulence of Dracula's home, he
remarks that "... in none of the rooms is there a mirror. There is not even a toilet glass on my table,
and I had to get the little shaving glass from my bad before I could either shave or brush my hair"
(Stoker, 16). The following morning, Jonathan attempts to shave when he wakes up, but Dracula
seizes the small shaving glass, claiming that "It is a foul bauble of man's vanity. Away with it!"
(Stoker, 21). He then proceeds to throw the shaving glass out the window (Stoker, 21–22). Dracula's
quite violent response to something as simple and "harmless" as a small mirror implies, once again,

Essay On The Hero's Tradition In Beowulf
The hero's tradition establishes heroes are benevolent and morally good while villains are dastardly
and ruthless. The epic poem Beowulf follows the tradition by having its main character and
hero,Beowulf, punished for succumbing to the evil within himself. In order to further explore the
complexity of humans, modern day media departs and modifies the original tradition. Unlike the

The Castle Of Otranto Research Paper
Despite this, The Castle of Otranto appeared to be a unique novel for its time with Walpole
introducing and changing the definition of terminology used, to suit the text and its structure
accordingly: the word "gothick" was almost always a synonym for rudeness, barbarousness, crudity,
coarseness and lack of taste. After Walpole the word assumed two new major meanings: first,
vigorous, bold, heroic and ancient, and second, quaint, charming, romantic, perhaps a little decadent
in its association with Romanism, but sentimental and interesting (George Gordon 9).
Due to this, it can be argued that this is potentially one of the main reasons for the novel becoming
so popular initially, as it was so distinct and what appeared to be original. However, ... Show more

The complete concept of a giant helmet falling from the sky is entirely preposterous and completely
ridiculous to the contemporary reader with the reaction of the characters also emphasising the ample
absurdness and ludicrous nature of the whole situation, tied in with the lameness of the reaction
from such an inexplicable, yet catastrophic event from occurring: "oh! The helmet! The helmet!"
(Otranto 18). Secondly, for many readers, the novel is very inept in terms of settings being
described, as well as events, characters and the conflicts that take place, as it all appears to be a
combination of factors acquired from older works, such as Shakespeare's Hamlet. Generally, the
concepts of a giant helmet, a hand, a foot and a leg are all equally as crazy concepts too but are
probably what enticed readers into reading the novel in the first place, before they knew the true

Similarities Between The Great Gatsby And Fahrenheit 451
"If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now
put foundations under them..." –Henry David Thoreau. This quote means that you can be a dreamer
and have wondrous ambitions but that will all go to waste unless effort is put towards that ambition.
I agree with this statement because people can have the most amazing goals but go no where
without the required effort. This statement is supported by the novel The Great Gatsby written by F.
Scott Fitzgerald and Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury. A literary device from Fahrenheit 451
that relates to the critical lens in an allegory. "...trying to fill a sieve with sand...And the faster he
poured, the faster it sifted through with a hot whispering. His hands were tired, the sand was boiling,
the sieve was empty"(Bradbury 78). This device, similar to the critical lens meaning in that a bunch
of work can be put into something and go nowhere without the proper foundation. A literary device
from the Great Gatsby that relates to the critical lens is symbolism. The green light on the

stone pillars are awe striking, and great. Although the tundra land was intriguing, there was a lot

whistled through the rocks, and the branches of the trees crashed together as we swept along."
(Bram Stoker 2003 Page 17) Hearing that creates a mood of terror for the reader. Because of the

For instance, the switch of the colorful clothing clothing of the peasants to the contrasting of the
white and black of the castle are used to build up fear in the reader's mind. At the beginning of the
chapter, peasants in Britiz, wear colorful attire which creates a mood of joy and wonder as the reader
travels to eastern Europe. However, as Jonathan approaches Castle Dracula, he sees " a vast ruined
castle, form whose tall black windows came no ray of light, and whose broken battlements showed a
jagged line against the moonlit sky" (Bram Stoker 2003 page 18). As the reader goes through a vast
field of teeming with color, he feels delighted enjoying the journey vicariously; however, as the
pleasant scene turns into a unpalatable imagery of terror which it creates unpleasant thoughts.
Another way the author instills a mood of fear is by contrasting Jonathan with the townspeople who
have superstitions about the in the castle. In the beginning of the chapter Jonathan has no idea that
he is heading towards danger not understanding the allusions to Transylvania. He even takes the
time to go to the British Museum

Archbishop Gebhard

  • 1. Archbishop Gebhard My research is based Hohensalzburg Fortress in Salzburg, Austria, built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard. It is currently the largest fully preserved castle in Central Europe. It is now a tourist attraction and is the most dominate feature of the city's skyline. This castle was originally built for troop protection for the Imperial army of the Holy Roman Empire. It was very small, but over a period of more than 900 years, it was transformed in many different ways. This fortress became the city's most important defense when Archbishop Gebhard had a conflict with Emperor Henry IV and was influenced to expand the castle in case of invasion. The expansion continued gradually for the next few centuries, then in 1462, builders under Prince Archbishop Burkhard III von Weißpriach, constructed the four main towers along the outer wall, a bell tower in the northern wall, the trumpeter tower in the northeast, the kraut tower in the north and a type of prison is the south. Prince–Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach during his term further expanded the castle, and the beast was growing. His coadjutor ( a bishop appointed to assist a diocesan bishop) Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg wrote descriptions of his idea of a Riess ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another situation was during the Napoleonic Wars when the French army invaded, but the castle was surrendered without a fight and the current archbishop fled to Vienna. From afar, it seemed as if there were no inhabitants, but as some of my crew and I ventured further into the forests, something seemed amiss. I had begun the exploration with nearly fifty of my crew surrounding me, but once we had walked no more than a hundred meters, only twenty of my crew remained by my side. I ordered for my men to halt and search the nearby woodland for the missing crew. About an hour later, they returned with no information on the missing men. Helios and his chariot of golden sun were dropping low in the sky, and after attempting to find our way back to our ship, but failing to do so, we made camp with what we had in a small clearing. My remaining crew sat close together and drew towards the fire with the fear of this thieving monster in their eyes. I had first watch, but as I sat against a sizable tree, I felt as if there were eyes on my back. I rose and stepped around the tree, but there was no sign of anyone watching me. ... I told my men that we were going to get revenge for their fellow crewmates, and then we quietly ran to the opposite side of the hallway. There were no more faeries around. Finding the queen in the enormous castle was arduous, but eventually we found her. She was alone in an empty room with her back facing to us. At first, it seemed as if she didn't notice us. Though when we stealthily moved forward to attack, she said, "You should have left when you still had the chance." She snapped her fingers, and my five men's necks were snapped instantly. In today's media and entertainment business between books, movies and television series the idea of a vampire has been sexualized by their nature and superior looks. The idea of being bitten by a vampire is pleasurable in today's time and Bram Stocker created this feeling in what seems to be Harker's dream. Stoker mixed the horror of the Count when he rips the women off of Jonathon and gives them a child as a snack instead and the sexual experience with the three female vampires in Harker's fantasy dream. 8. One of the three female vampires said this to the Count after Dracula's harsh order to leave Jonathon alone, claiming Harker as property. The quote "You yourself never loved, you never love!" is significant because thus far in the book Dracula appears to be alone, Harker is his only contact, the women is stating the truth that Dracula has never loved and doesn't love. A Synthesis Essay: A Brief Story Of Aurora On the side of a mountain, there was a small shack that was home to a man, Titus, and his wife, Kira, who waited many years for a child. They visited an oracle to plead that they could be blessed with one. The priestess told them they will have a daughter, but she came with a great cost: she would die from a cold heart. The couple returned home with mixed emotions, for they wished for a daughter that did not have death as her fate. It was an exviful day when their daughter, Aurora, was born. As she grew older, her parents became increasingly fritterated of the oracle's prophecy. They sheltered her from the world, allowing her to leave the house twice a day to fetch water. The light that Aurora had seen was a ray of sunlight that bounced off a great ice castle, which belonged to Boreas, god of the North Wind. When he opened the intricately chiseled door, she collapsed on him due to lack of food and exhaustion. She woke up to the main doors of the castle slamming in Apollo's face. He came to reveal himself to Aurora; however, Boreas had fallen in love with her, too. She rushed out of bed to discover what was going on, but she fell to her knees in pain just as Boreas walked in. "You will not be able to leave in your condition," he told her, slyly. "You will be staying here until you have healed from being in the cold. Comparing Wordsworth's Ode to Duty and Elegiac Stanzas Comparing Wordsworth's Ode to Duty and Elegiac Stanzas A past attitude is reverted to and revised in Wordsworth's "Ode to Duty" and "Elegiac Stanzas." Employing geographic metaphors, both celestial and earth–bound, the poems climb over rocky Wordsworthian terrain that details his reconciliation between past and present and implications of the future. Though vastly different stylistically‹"Ode to Duty" utilizes an antiquated verse form and language, while "Elegiac Stanzas" is written in Wordsworth's beloved "language of men"‹and in the internal willfulness on the poet's part to change versus reaction to external stimuli, the poems parallel in their desires for resolution of a disarrayed soul via the calming sublime power of either an ... His desire to mend his ways was brought about "Through no disturbance of my soul,/ Or strong compunction in me wroughtŠ/ But in the quietness of thought" (33–4, 36). The poem's devotion to an abstract concept exemplifies the willful internality of the poet's decision. This internality leads the poet to "supplicate for thy control," an act that shifts the poem into the religious territory of reverence. Indeed, Wordsworth subtly raises his travel conceit from the earth to the heavens. "In the quietness of thought," a time that is often reserved for prayer, he decides that "Me this unchartered freedom tires;/ I feel the weight of chance–desires" (37–8). The unmapped liberalism of random urges weighs him down and bounds him to the earth; the austere and personified guardian of duty, on the other hand, steps lightly between the earth and the sky: "Nor know we anything so fair/ As is the smile upon thy face;/ Flowers laugh before thee on their beds/ And fragrance in thy footing treads;/ Thou dost preserve the stars from wrong;/ And the most ancient heavens, through Thee, are fresh and strong" (43–8). The craving "for a repose that ever is the same," a constancy that may, in the future, hold for him "a blissful course," is made salient in the comparison to stars, long regarded as shapers of destiny (40, 21). The "repose" here means "sleep," whereas in the fourth stanza "reposed my trust" means ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I saw and did so many new things while there, but the most memorable experience I had was while we were in Assisi, the patron city of St. Francis. There lies the Rocca Maggiore, a medieval castle that still stands today among a throng of mountains. With free time to spare to do as we pleased, our group made of entirely of students and adults from Sterlington began up a steep, winding path to reach the castle. I remember how tiring it was to continually climb uphill, but the various flowers and fruit trees, glowing and shining in the afternoon light, that lined the way were definitely enough to keep me content. • 19. The Literary And Artistic Romanticism Movement John Constable was a 18th and 19th century English artist whose work has coincided with the literary and artistic Romanticism movement. His works included many painting and sketches of the natural world and environment which was one of the hallmarks of Romantic works. A lot of his work did not cover the theme of ruins until later in his life and especially after the death of his wife. His oil on canvas painting, "Hadleigh Castle, The Mouth of the Thames–Morning after a Stormy Night" depicts the ruins of a medieval stronghold known by the same name of Hadleigh Castle after a storm has ravaged the area over night. However, it is important to note the context in which this work was created in. In 1828, Constable's wife had passed away and this led to a shift in his own artistic work. In addition, Constable had also been inducted into the Royal Academy but he was criticized and scrutinized by the president of the organization which also led to a change in Constable's style and themes. The setting of the artwork is very gloomy and somber and this has a lot to do with these events that had taken place in his life during the creation of the piece. Yet, despite the depressing emotions the image initially evokes, there is also this aspect of renewal and resurrection that is created by the artwork. In an article titled Constable, John, Michael Rosenthal from Oxford University stated, "Constable later though a 'ruin' a suitable symbol for himself, but the iconography of this painting ... • 21. Master Cat Essay There are certain elements that can be found in all trickster tales. One of those common elements is the appearance of gods, spirits or other supernatural beings such as fairies or trolls. In the three trickster tales that were assigned, gods spirits and the supernatural are found. In the African trickster tale about how stories came to be, How Stories Came to Earth, there is a supernatural element in the form of a god. In this story, the sky god, Nyame lives high up in the sky, where he keeps all the stories locked in a box for himself. Nyame is portrayed as a typical god, someone who is powerful and is to be feared. In the tale, Anansi the spider, attempted to get the stories from the sky god, but had to pay a price. "Now Anansi climbed up hi web to the sky god, Nyame, to ask for the sky god's stories" (40). The sky god, Nyame, is one example of the supernatural in trickster tales. Another example of the use of the supernatural is found in the tale, Coyote Steals Fire. Coyote, the main character, was able to read minds, which was a supernatural talent that gave him advantage, especially when fighting. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Heartland" displays characteristics of the traditional Gothic through the combination of wide landscapes and dilapidated factories. Photos from three collections portray the transition of the untouched landscape to an overgrown and gothic scene. The first photos of the gothic transition come from the "Prairie Images of Ground and Sky" collection. The collection shows untouched nature that gives a feeling of the sublime. It shows wide green expanses, bathed in warm light, that shows a raw beauty and goodness created by nature. This feeling is better reflected in the "Matfield Green" collection that depicts the green expanse that is similar to the "Prairie Images of Ground and Sky" collection but also includes things such as railroads and power lines that show that the area is populated. This collection adds an aspect of the isolated landscape and fear of isolation because there is a sparse dotting of humans across the large expanse that gives the viewer the knowledge that there are inhabitants around, but not seen or directly noticed. The element of isolation in nature is demonstrated in The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Turn of the Screw by Udolpho and the House at Bly through their setting in isolated landscapes with weak tethers to the rest of civilization. The idea of overcoming this isolation is also present in the novels. Emily in The Mysteries of Udolpho escapes the isolation to safety. The Governess in The Turn of the Screw hopes to do the same by connection with the Man from Harley Street but is not as lucky. The effect of the isolated landscape with an unknown element causes the reader and viewer to become suspicious of their surroundings and uneasy with the sublime landscape due to the possibility that something evil is residing within it and give a more traditional gothic feel. The third collection that completes a gothic picture of the Midwest shows the ruins of the prairie. "Steel Work – ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Staging Hamlet for a Modern Audience I do not agree with the comment of Hazlitt: 'There is no play that suffers so much in being transferred to the stage' Based on performances I have seen and other plays by Shakespeare, I think this is one of his better plays as it does not stick to guidelines. Although a long play, it has a depth to it, that, if transferred to the stage well, is transformed from a long and winding script to a fascinating play filled with suspense and the emotions of the characters run high. 'Hamlet', nonetheless is a challenging script and Hamlet himself can either create the play, or destroy it, he is the key element. Clothing And Make-Up In Edward Scissorhands Edward Scissorhands, directed by Tim Burton is a story about a monster (or outsider) who enters into the so called peaceful neighbourhood and disturbs the calm. the message of isolation and alienation is shown through the colour, costume/makeup and setting that are used through the film. The costume and make–up in "Edward Scissorhands" is used generate feeling and emotions in the audience. There are major differences in what Edward wears and looks like and what the humans wear and look like. The costumes guide the audience in to thinking what kind of characters the people are and will turn out to be like. The town's people are dressed in a typical 1950's style. This makes them look very simplistic in their ways, on the outside. The women's clothes are very bright and overly colourful. The colours used generate the view that the townspeople are all very normal, and everything appears to be alright on the outside. The make–up on the women accents and highlights their look. The painting is set at night, and the sky is a wondrous swirl of bursting blues, greens, and a gentle yellow for the crescent moon that is in the upper right corner. However, emotionalism is also an objective, because the artist imitates reality, but also draws inward for emotion. Good balance is shown in the painting, I would say it is symmetrical. Rhythm is also well shown, as you gaze at the painting, your eyes moving around as each part flows into another. Emphasis is shown on the night sky and the great black figure. Proportion is difficult to describe, as it is difficult to discern just how big the black figure really is. Variety in the mystical castle and the quaint town is well shown. This fighting ultimately leads to thousands of innocent lives lost – men, women and children. We grieve their deaths, we mourn their deaths and we feel saddened by their deaths. Poetry can help alleviate this saddened feeling. It can help us to feel happier in times of great depression and stress. Some poems however strike the heart of war and the horrors related to it. The poets can express their points of view on war, conscriptions or the propagandas in a dark manner and create a gloomy atmosphere. One of these poems is part of David Lockyer's War Limericks. As the title suggests, this poem is a limerick with sound and visual language used to boost the poems meaning. The bomber was a relatively large airframe measuring in at a wingspan of 32 metres and an overall length of 21 metres. This name again gives us a visual image of just how large this bomber was. Speaking of a "flying fortress," this is one example of sound language that Lockyer has used. It is a form of alliteration and helps to flow the poem. It helps to emphasise the idea of the B–17 being a castle in the sky. Alliteration also adds to the rhythm of a poem and in a limerick this is all the more important. Because this poem is a limerick, it contains an AABBA rhyme and rhythm pattern. While gothic literature can contain a vast number of elements, some of the most common ones include a setting in a castle and a mysterious, gloomy atmosphere (Harris, 2015). At the end of the first chapter of Dracula, protagonist Jonathan Harker describes Count Dracula's castle abode as "... the courtyard of a vast ruined castle, from whose tall black windows come no ray of light, and whose broken battlements showed a jagged line against the moonlit sky" (Stoker, 11). The typical answers would be a crucifix, sunlight or mirrors, and garlic. All three of these "traditional" methods are mentioned in Dracula, and are mentioned as foreshadowing, allowing readers to draw their own conclusions that Dracula is a vampire. When Jonathan Harker is beginning his journey to Count Dracula's castle, the wife of his hotel landlord gives him a crucifix to ward off evil (Stoker, 4). Though Jonathan sees crucifixes as "idolatrous" according to his religion, he wears the crucifix to appease the old woman (Stoker, 4). This foreshadowing implies that the old woman knows of the true nature of the Count. As Jonathan notes the opulence of Dracula's home, he remarks that "... in none of the rooms is there a mirror. There is not even a toilet glass on my table, and I had to get the little shaving glass from my bad before I could either shave or brush my hair" (Stoker, 16). The following morning, Jonathan attempts to shave when he wakes up, but Dracula seizes the small shaving glass, claiming that "It is a foul bauble of man's vanity. Away with it!" (Stoker, 21). Gargoyles also include other grotesque carvings associated with Gothic. It says that flying buttresses are stone arches that carry most of the weight of the roof, so the massive thick walls are not needed. Tall spires reached high in the sky to the heavens and over took the landscape. The cathedral Notre Dame de Paris began in 1163. It took artisans centuries to complete. (268). Essay On The Hero's Tradition In Beowulf The hero's tradition establishes heroes are benevolent and morally good while villains are dastardly and ruthless. The epic poem Beowulf follows the tradition by having its main character and hero,Beowulf, punished for succumbing to the evil within himself. In order to further explore the complexity of humans, modern day media departs and modifies the original tradition. Unlike the hero's tradition, Castle in the Sky has their characters perform morally conflicting actions in order to emphasize the complexity of humans. While Wiglaf and Pazu both fight for people they care about, Pazu allies with the Dola Gang in order to achieve his goal. Traditional heroes would never ally with an evil doer to accomplish their goal. A wrinkled, yet sweet and endearing, hand stretches out to touch a young child's face. A face of innocence to world. Lightning roared throughout the skies, casting flickering lights which revealed the age worn stones. The sounds of rushing water cried beneath the stone bridge that connected the two worlds. Sprawled around the tangled trees were the skulls of the dead laid about. The musky air filled the atmosphere and the scent of rotting flesh lingered forever. In the air, the sounds of a single horse and metal clanking could be heard, ringly clearly and loudly. Faster and faster, sprinting towards the moat bridge, until the small, gray imps sprang out and shot the incoming horse with a barrage of arrows. They spoke inaudible sounds and were quite resilient powerful shooters despite their frame. A single knight, clad in full armor, was quickly tossed aside from the horse and into the dirt. One arrow, whizzing in the raindrops, had nearly pierced the helmet, but a quick maneuver was enough to dodge it. More guards, alerted by the ruckus, arrived at the scene and surrounded the poor knight. The trusted sword that the knight cherished had no effect on them however hard it was ... Memories fade as I grow older with fleeting thoughts as I try to recall my last Disney adventure. That visit has created some wonderfully vivid memories that will last a lifetime. Disney's Magic Kingdom was celebrating a major anniversary during a year– long event. • 69. The Castle Of Otranto Research Paper Despite this, The Castle of Otranto appeared to be a unique novel for its time with Walpole introducing and changing the definition of terminology used, to suit the text and its structure accordingly: the word "gothick" was almost always a synonym for rudeness, barbarousness, crudity, coarseness and lack of taste. After Walpole the word assumed two new major meanings: first, vigorous, bold, heroic and ancient, and second, quaint, charming, romantic, perhaps a little decadent in its association with Romanism, but sentimental and interesting (George Gordon 9). Due to this, it can be argued that this is potentially one of the main reasons for the novel becoming so popular initially, as it was so distinct and what appeared to be original. However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The complete concept of a giant helmet falling from the sky is entirely preposterous and completely ridiculous to the contemporary reader with the reaction of the characters also emphasising the ample absurdness and ludicrous nature of the whole situation, tied in with the lameness of the reaction from such an inexplicable, yet catastrophic event from occurring: "oh! The helmet! The helmet!" (Otranto 18). Secondly, for many readers, the novel is very inept in terms of settings being described, as well as events, characters and the conflicts that take place, as it all appears to be a combination of factors acquired from older works, such as Shakespeare's Hamlet. Generally, the concepts of a giant helmet, a hand, a foot and a leg are all equally as crazy concepts too but are probably what enticed readers into reading the novel in the first place, before they knew the true authorship of the ... • 71. Similarities Between The Great Gatsby And Fahrenheit 451 "If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put foundations under them..." –Henry David Thoreau. This quote means that you can be a dreamer and have wondrous ambitions but that will all go to waste unless effort is put towards that ambition. I agree with this statement because people can have the most amazing goals but go no where without the required effort. This statement is supported by the novel The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury. A literary device from Fahrenheit 451 that relates to the critical lens in an allegory. "...trying to fill a sieve with sand...And the faster he poured, the faster it sifted through with a hot whispering. His hands were tired, the sand was boiling, the sieve was empty"(Bradbury 78). This device, similar to the critical lens meaning in that a bunch of work can be put into something and go nowhere without the proper foundation. He is seen here steering the boat by himself on the widened stream surrounded by the trees and the landscape in full bloom. The angel is on the bank of the stream as if to direct him out on his boat. The youth sets out on a summer day on the stream that looks calm but at the end it looks as if it will turn a little rocky. The reflections of the surroundings are mirrored on the stream as the youth sails towards the graceful castle in the sky. The youth looks confident and energetic as he soars out on a journey. • 75. Tundra Welty: A Short Story A devoid landscape lies ahead. The petite stream is the only guide, slithering nimbly on – almost like a snake. The clouds are mighty; they are too dense to see the holy, cerulean sky. Stretching up to try and touch this sky are monolithic towers, which overshadows anyone who passes. Moss clenches onto them, their humdrum green tops merging together. They are quite daunting: their lanky structure, over hanging ledges (that threaten to give way any moment) – everything about the wild stone pillars are awe striking, and great. Although the tundra land was intriguing, there was a lot more to see; meandering down the valley, the grass (which was once a luscious green) has begun to grow dead, and dry. The shadowy sky – which is filled with ubiquitous clouds – reflects the decaying ground. It is a shield against the sun; it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Separating from the curious undergrowth, there stands a cluster of undersized mountains. Fog seeps from every crack it can find, poisoning the land with poor sight. • 77. Bram Stoker's 'Mood Of The First Chapter Of Dracula' Dracula – Chapter 1 Tone is a writer's tool that creates mood in a story. Within the first chapter of Dracula, the author, Bram Stoker, uses this to create a mood of terror. First, Bram Stoker shows tremendous change in scenery as the main character moves closer to Dracula's castle. As the story begins, Jonathan is traveling from England to Transylvania. Through the window he sees the colorful fields, orchards of pears, apples, plums, all vibrantly full of life. However, as he nears Castle Dracula, he travels in the depth of night. Jonathan writes in his journal "we could hear the rising wind, for it moaned and whistled through the rocks, and the branches of the trees crashed together as we swept along." (Bram Stoker 2003 Page 17) Hearing that creates a mood of terror for the reader. Because of the drastic change between the colorful setting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, the switch of the colorful clothing clothing of the peasants to the contrasting of the white and black of the castle are used to build up fear in the reader's mind. At the beginning of the chapter, peasants in Britiz, wear colorful attire which creates a mood of joy and wonder as the reader travels to eastern Europe. However, as Jonathan approaches Castle Dracula, he sees " a vast ruined castle, form whose tall black windows came no ray of light, and whose broken battlements showed a jagged line against the moonlit sky" (Bram Stoker 2003 page 18). As the reader goes through a vast field of teeming with color, he feels delighted enjoying the journey vicariously; however, as the pleasant scene turns into a unpalatable imagery of terror which it creates unpleasant thoughts. Another way the author instills a mood of fear is by contrasting Jonathan with the townspeople who have superstitions about the in the castle. In the beginning of the chapter Jonathan has no idea that he is heading towards danger not understanding the allusions to Transylvania. He even takes the time to go to the British Museum ...
