Fenris
The first recorded encounters with the wolf beast were in the Forest of Arden, where Vikings
discovered the beast in a cave. Thinking it to be the Wolf God Fenris, they brought daily
offerings of pigs, fowls and humans to the opening of the cave. Before a battle with the Mercian
King Æthelbald, a small army of Vikings came to the cave to request a blessing in the coming
battle. The wolf beast was unsettled by this large intrusion of humans. She charged from her
cave and set about dismembering the army. The second recorded encounter with the beast was in
London in 1789.
Azazael
When Moses unleashed the Angel of Death on the first born of Egypt, the Great Plague lured
Azazael the demon to the land. But a priest named Lufenamun fought Azazael for seven days and
imprisoned the demon in a canopic jar. A small group of priests, corrupted by Azazael’s evil,
fashioned a spell key to unlock the prison. Lufenamun learned of this and quickly laid waste to
the corrupt priests then hid the key. In 1847, an English explorer discovered the key and, along
with many other Egyptian relics, brought it back to London for investigation.
Lilith
In 466, a village on the outskirts of Londinium was plagued by a vampire infestation caused by
Methuselah, the undead being. A lone survivor of the plague swore vengeance upon the scourge
and made a pact with a reaper to slow down her mortal clock each time she destroyed and
returned an undead to the underworld. She founded the Order of the Long Sunrise to hunt all
undead and she made each fanatic make the same reaper pact. The order hunted all vampires in
England to near extinction and her followers called her Lilith the Night Monster.
Methuselah
The Scáthe Coven were the first to take note of Methuselah’s London existence: Between 1885
and 1888 they linked him to a spree of gruesome deaths, some of which were referred to as the
Whitechapel Murders. In 1504, a Polish demonologist had believed that Methuselah, and not a
spirit, was responsible for the 86 corpses discovered in the Białowieża Forest. A scroll in the
British Museum describes the account of a Sumerian Prince who conducted human sacrifices in
2. order to gain wealth. He was ritualistically buried alive as punishment. The scroll names the
Methuselah as the prince.
Cain
In the winter of 1714, St Anne’s orphanage took in a pair of twins. The following morning one of
the children was found dead. Believing the living child to be cursed with Cain’s mark, a sister of
the orphanage abandoned the child in a dark alley. That same day, the child was found by the
hunter order known as the Long Sunrise. The order raised the child as a hunter and he became
the feared undead slayer called Cain. As the winters passed, Cain began to work independently
and in 1863 he broke away from the order permanently. He is rarely seen, but the corpses he
leaves behind are numerous.
Elizabeth
Elizabeth was found guilty of murdering and torturing 656 people and, as punishment, was
bricked up in a room of Čachtice Castle and left to die. Throughout her years as a murderer,
Elizabeth had accrued large reserves of dark power and during her imprisonment she used this
power to fashion a spell gate. For four years, through the slatted windows of her castle room,
crows brought her the materials needed for her dark magic. In the twilight of 21 August 1614,
Elizabeth died upon the spell gate and her spirit was cast through the gate to a portal deep
within the Tower of London.
Prometheus
The events that lead to the creation of Prometheus, the undead being are mostly unclear. One
constant, is that Prometheus was created in the lower regions of Bethlem Royal Hospital in a
horrific medical experiment by doctors. Over time the Master Undead Slayer Cain began to hear
rumours of this experiment and started an investigation into the story. He found Prometheus to
be an unnaturally intelligent being and had discovered the means by which flesh could be
brought back to life. In 1836, Cain and Prometheus clashed in the first of many battles.
Sobek
English archaeologists brought the contents of the Reptile Tomb back to London in what was
described as the most mysterious find of the century. One of the many artefacts they had brought
back was the cursed canopic jar that was Azazael’s prison. Lufenamun, the priest who locked
Azazael away in this prison had placed a failsafe curse on the jar so that anyone who opened it
3. and released Azazael from his prison would awaken the war deity Sobek from the chamber of the
Reptile Tomb. Eager to discover the contents of the jar, the researchers neglected to translate
the cursed inscription on its side and opened it.
Arbella
On the 25th of September 1615, in the Tower of London, Arbella, a noble woman, was
pronounced dead. The cause of death was declared to be self-imposed starvation. But a medium
who attended to Arbella in her final hours knew this to be false, for she had seen the means by
which Arbella would truly die in a dream the night before. As Arbella was taking her final
breaths, the medium had a second premonition. She saw the means by which Arbella could
return. She whispered to Arbella as she died, ‘Stay close to the Black Gate. Stay close to the
Ferryman. The gate will free you. Take your revenge’.
Charon
In the late 19th century, the mortal realm seized control of the Black Gate of the underworld
and, in so doing, began to release the damned souls from its dark reaches. Angered by this
brazen infringement, Charon the ferryman of the river Styx diverted the river, causing it to flow
into the Thames and used it to enter the earth realm to seek retribution. Charon, with his wrath
ever growing, sent his servants into London to purchase the souls of mortals and, stacking them
high, temporarily sealing the entrance to The Black Gate.
Samedi
In 1845, the high society of London was abuzz with the news of a wealthy baron buying up
property in London. Londoners, for the most part, were eager to extend invitations to the wealthy
gentleman. But a coven of witches known as the Scáth were plotting each purchase. They noticed
that some land purchases were of seven lots of land within seven of London’s cemeteries and
they began to suspect that the baron was linked to an ancient and forbidden type of blood magic
called Sang Noir. Its sole dark purpose was to harness the power of the Black Gate of the
underworld.
Stheno
When Perseus killed Medusa, Stheno and her sister Euryale swore an oath to rid the world of his
bloodline. Euryale’s vengeance lead her on a murderous journey to Constantinople, while
Stheno traced the last whispers of Perseus to Albion, in the region known as Londinium and later
as London. Here she remained for centuries and built a vast subterranean lair with passages and
secrete entrances to the city. She used her power over the weak mortals to mesmerise and bend
them to her will and, over time, took control of the vast majority of London’s gangs.
