Definition
• The term stress is basically derived form of Latin
word “stringere” which means to be drawn tight.
• Stress is defined as a state of psychological,
emotional and physical tension in response to
demands of life when a person think that he or
she cannot fulfill them.
Example
• For example divorce, loss of job and the death of
a loved one could impose mental stress such as
depression, physical stress like headache and
emotional stress such as fear or crying.

Coping
• Psychologists Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman Coping as a way of using conscious
abilities to solve personal and interpersonal anxieties and seeking to bear stress and
conflicts. It can be referred to as coping mechanism or coping strategies.

Coping strategies could be of various forms as their effectiveness depends on type of stressor. some are
stated below
The Appraisal Focused Strategies
This strategy of coping stress is involved in change of mindset and thoughts. People alter their thinking
about a problem , approach them in a altered form and change their goals and values often.
• For example, the most frequent coping technique under this category is denial, disassociation, fantcy
and passive aggression.

The Problem Focused Strategies
These strategies work on the behavior of an individual. It works in such a way that modifies person’s
unusual behavior and directly reduce the stress. It focuses on the cause of problem.
• For example,Time management and using instrumental social help.

This strategy works on alteration of individual’s emotions in a way that could enable a person to tolerate
stress. It could be more effective when stressor is outside the person’s control.This strategy address the
feelings that are accosted with stress.
• For example meditation, distraction and praying for guidance and strength.

Adaptive or Maladaptive strategies
Stress could be copped in both positive and negative way.
Positive strategy for coping stress would successfully reduce the stress and provide the user with
encouraging feedback.
• For example take social support, try to learn from stress, maintain good physical and mental health
and take on humor in hard situations, are some forms of adaptive coping strategy.
Negative coping strategies could also be effective for managing stress but results would be flawed and
undermined.They provide a person with a quick way to break a link between stressor and stress,
therefore it would just give short term relief.
• For example, to become much sensitive, escape and disassociation.

It is an unconscious way of managing stress. For example, to retreat in a stressing situation is defensive
stress coping technique.
Adeptness
This way of stress management involves in tolerating stress. For example, self-sacrifice, nobility.
Alter behavior
Modify way of action in stress condition in such a way that it could eradicate stress.. For example,
compensation and undoing.
Pounce
Divert attentions to a group, situation or person other then stressor and stress. For example,
emotionality, projection, meditation, exercise.

Avoidance
Avoid stress situation by keeping self away from stress. For example, passive reaction and denial.
Cognitive
Change way of thinking about a stressful condition in order to reduce and eliminate that. For example,
suppression and intectuallization.
Self-Harm
In a stressful condition to harm oneself for coping with emotional pain, thinking that doing this would
end the stress. For example, cutting yourself, burning yourself, punching yourself or other thing.
