Coping
Strategies
By Surendra Patil
Roll Number:-51
Meaning:-
Coping means to invest own conscious effort,
to solve personal and interpersonal problems,
in order to try to master, minimize or tolerate
stress and conflict.
Type of coping Strategies
1. Problem-focused strategies
Problem focused strategies are simply solution-oriented approaches to
dealing with a situation that causes stress. If the problem is due to
something that can be changed, you can solve it by reducing or
eliminating the source of the stress. Let’s say you’re tense and anxious
due to your hectic schedule. You feel like you’re running from one
meeting to another, while always being afraid that you’ll be late to the
next one. You would look at how you are managing your appointments to
see how you can reduce the problem.
2.Appraisal-focused strategies
Appraisal focusing strategies are directed towards challenging your own
assumptions and modifying the way you think. This may include
distancing yourself from the problem or challenge, altering goals and
values, or identifying the humour in the situation to bring a positive spin.
3.Emotion-focused strategies
Emotion focused strategies involve dealing with the feelings
that are stirred up as a consequence of the stressor. This can
include managing hostile feelings by counting to ten, or
reducing anxiety by meditating or using relaxation techniques.
Unlike the first two strategies, which are directed at reducing
the source of stress, emotion-focused coping is more tactical
than strategic, since it is aimed at the effects of the stress.
Distracting oneself from the urge to binge would be an example
that is most relevant to emotional eating. This is what many
therapists who work with emotional eating recommend when
they encourage people to “surf the urge,” meaning, distract
yourself from the urge to binge until it passes.
Five emotion-focused coping
strategies
Disclaiming
Escape avoidance
Accepting responsibility or blame
Exercising self control
Positive reappraisal
What is the focus of this coping
mechanism?
– The focus of this coping mechanism is to change the
meaning of the stressor or transfer attention away from
it.
– For example reappraising tries to find more positive
meaning of the cause of the stress in order to reduce the
emotional component of the stressor. Avoidance of the
emotional distress will distract from the negative filling
associated with the stressor. Emotion-focused coping is
well suited for stressors that seem uncontrollable
Conclusion
– Typically people used mixer of all three type of coping
strategy, and coping skills usually change with time
– All this methods can prove useful, but problem focused
coping strategies will adjust better to life
Thank you
