3. WHAT IS HYPERSENSITIVITY 3
Type 3 hypersensitivity occurs when there is accumulation of
immune complexes that have not been adequately cleared by
innate immune cells, giving rise to an inflammatory.
These complexes travel through the blood stream and get
deposited in various organs.
Hence this can occur in many parts of the body. Generally,
common sites of deposition include:
1. Skin
2. Kidney
3. Joints
4. TYPE III HYPERSENSITIVITY:
IMMUNE COMPLEX-MEDIATED CYTOTOXICITY
• Caused by immune complex deposition in tissues
–Small amounts cleared by phagocytic cells
–Activates complement which attracts neutrophils and
stimulates Mast cell degranulation
–Depending on location, reaction can be localized or
systemic
5. MODE OF ACTION
•The type 3 reaction is induce by antigen-
antibody complex. This is as a result of various
biochemical mechanisms, this result in tissue
damage in the body.
7. RISK FACTORS
• Depending on the different manifestation of different type
3 diseases, there are different risk factors as well.
• There some gender differences between diseases of type 3.
disease are more common in females such as rheumatoid
arthritis.
• NB; ethnicity and geographical location can have impact on
the disease cases.
8. TREATMENT
• There is no cure for this disease, the treatment aims at symptom
control only.
• Because of the pathogenesis of these diseases are antibody in origin,
a lot of treatment options are aimed at that.
• Depending on the severity of the hypersensitivity reaction, different
treatment approaches are applied, including the following
• Steroids
• Interferon
• Cyclosporin
• cyclophosphamide
12. HOW IT CAN BE DIAGNOSED
Depending on the different type of diseases, some general
investigations may be necessary. Basic routine investigations may
include;
Blood function test
Liver function test
Thyroid function test
Kidney function test
