won 18, lost 7, drew 2 and had 2 abandoned. Well done to all the squads.
We have arranged a trial net on Saturday 14th April at The Aspire Sports Centre in Wandsworth, (337,
Merton Road, Wandsworth, SW18 5JU), 4 nets from 15.15 to 17.15hrs. On Saturday 21st April there will
be a trial match at the ground. On Saturday 28th April the 1st X1 are at home to defend The Roehampton
SW15. Cup and the 2nd XI are away in a friendly against St. James. On Sunday 29th there is an away
game versus Reigate Priory Pilgrims. On the 5th May the Saturday 1st X1 are playing in their first league
game at home versus Morden CC, whilst the Saturday 2nd X1 are away at Lingfield CC. On Sunday 6th
May we have a home game versus Crane. The first round of the league cup competition is on Sunday 13th
May, away, versus Hampton Hill CC. Tony Fenton is busy arranging the Sunday fixtures and as we go to
print there are 11 home and 7 away fixtures already confirmed. We are again entering the leagues midweek
20/20 competition. Further details will be circulated in due course. The midweek LMS competition is also
going from strength to strength and details will be circulated by Hugo Flower during the course of the
season. The Club Tournament will take place on Sunday 24th June.
As ever, our grateful thanks go to Eddie McVarish and Alan Hartridge for all their work on the ground
throughout the year. Some of the scores achieved were a testament to the blood, sweat and tears Eddie
and Alan put in. Eddie has agreed to carry on for another year but we do need to arrange a replacement
groundsman going forward, so if anybody knows somebody that might be interested, let it be known.
The finances, for the first time in two years, showed a healthy profit. This was mainly due to bar takings
getting back to an acceptable level. Let’s all work together to ensure this trend continues!
The AGM is on Wednesday 21st March 2018 starting at 7.00pm sharp in the Wolsey Room (upstairs
function room) of the The Dukes Head Public House, Lower Richmond Road (near Putney Bridge). Please
make a special effort to attend, as it is your opportunity to voice issues and concerns about your club. I will
gladly accept cheques/cash on the night for your playing membership, £100 full membership, £40 under
18s/students.
The club website holds a wealth of information, and the text facility has gone a long way in improving
communication. Our thanks go to Ben Brook for his time and expertise in this field. The site can be
accessed via (www.putneycricketclub.com). Although we are relying on the website/texts as our main
communication tool, it is imperative the Team Secretary, Charlie Smulian, has each players current e-mail
address, phone numbers, (home/work/mobile), and address. Would you please e-mail Charlie with any
updates/amendments to your details. Charlie can be contacted on (h) 020 7371 0951, (m) 07904 834825,
or e-mail (charles.smulian@yahoo.co.uk) A special mention has to go to Tony Fenton, Fixture Secretary,
for all his hard work in ensuring that we had opposition week in, week out.
Mike Henshall is standing down as Saturday 2nd XI Captain, in preparation for his move to warmer
climates. Our thanks go to Mike for all his time and hard work in running a successful Saturday 2nd XI and
indeed gaining promotion for the 2017 season.
At the back of this report is a list of those members that are willing to stand in a managerial post or have
indicated their desire to fill a vacant position. If you are interested in standing for a position already held,
please get in touch with one of the committee and arrange to get a proposer/seconder. Send an e-mail to
the Club Secretary, Paul McCann, at least two weeks prior to the AGM, ie. by 7th March 2018.
Congratulations to Piers and Becky on the birth of a baby boy, Archie Jackson Comiskey on 06.09.2017.
Our thanks go to Brian Macmillan and other players who provided teas for the 2017 season. Brian is unable
to do the teas on a Saturday for the 2018 season. If anybody is interested in making the teas on a Saturday
and/or Sunday, please let it be known. Captains have a lot on their plate on match days and if they don’t
have to worry about organising teas, it goes a long way in making the day run smoothly!

The presentation evening held on 4th November 2017 at the clubhouse was attended by 44 members and
friends. The club took £2,772.77 from the entrance fee, raffle/auction, less expenses of £1,619.21, (cost
of food/test tickets/plaques/engraving/sundries), and the contribution to C.R.Y. of £310.00, total profit =
£1,153.56. Our thanks go to all those who donated so generously towards the raffle and auction prizes,
and of course the highest bidders on the night. Our thanks also go to Andy Hyland and Ben Brook for all
their hard work in organising the event. This year’s presentation evening is still at the planning stage. The
date, location and finer details will be circulated during the summer months, but the club will once again
subsidise the evening to keep the price of tickets affordable. All we would ask is that you commit yourself
to attending, and help make the evening a resounding success.
Cricket nets, in preparation for the 2018 season, are underway at The Oval Cricket Ground. We have two
lanes booked every Monday, 7pm to 8pm, (three lanes from Monday 5th Feb), which commenced on
Monday, 8th January 2018). £8.00 per session, £5.00 bowling only. Details are on the website. If you have
any queries contact Dez Telfer, (darien.telfer@gmail.com) tel no. 07905 062207, who is the co-ordinator.
It is down to each individual to promote the club to increase playing membership and secure a full
programme of fixtures throughout the year.
Good luck to the lads that are going on the Putney C.C. Tour of Yorkshire on Sunday 27th May to Saturday
2nd June. The much sought after midweek game at Slinfold is on Wednesday 4th July, 2pm start. Doug
Shaw will be the match manager. Please make a note in your diary and book the time off work well in
advance! A golf day is being arranged by Paul McCann in Sept/Oct. Details will be circulated in due course.
We are in the process, along with our co-sharers, Fulham Compton Old Boys Association, of getting
building quotes for clubhouse improvements. Grants are also being applied for. It is a time consuming
process and my thanks go to Paul McCann for his efforts in this regard.
We have a stock of kit detailing the club motif at the club. If you are interested in purchasing a shirt, cap,
hat or sweat band, please let your captain or one of the Management Committee know. We also have an
on-line shop on the Putney CC website. A full range of cricket attire with the club motif can be purchased
at very competitive prices. Club ties can also be purchased at £20.00 each and a new stock of club baseball
style caps at £12.00 each.
As always, our thanks go to Julian Day for the production and circulation of the Annual Report. Good Luck
for 2018!

PUTNEY TO PARIS CYCLE RIDE
On Thu 23 March, 12 inadequate 'sportsmen' in ludicrous lycra rode from Putney to Paris.
Ben 'Le directeur sportif' Brook, Dan 'Le gangster' Parmar, Darien 'Le Putney Express' Telfer, Doug 'Le
rouleur' Shaw, Mark 'La lanterne rouge' Wibberley, James 'La mécanique' Hannaford, Andrew 'Le soigneur'
Hyland, Mike 'Le petit garcon' Henshall, Brian 'Le domestique' Trollip, Saad 'Hinault' Hannan, Charles 'Le
maillot blanc' Ellis, Darryn 'Le maillot vert' Lapham, Paul 'Le chauffeur' McCann
3 days, 240 miles, 23 hours riding, 77 croissants, 3 punctures, 48 hangovers. Some chicken. 1 onion
garland, 1 muffin top (Brian), 1 squeaky Brompton, 1 crash, 1 person who couldn't get into France due to
#Brexit, 1 pool tournament, 1 ridiculous freewheel race between Brian and Saad…
The final day to Paris was a good day. We happened upon a van full of Rotisserie chicken. We stopped at
Poissy for cheap laughs. We cycled through ganglands and along the Seine. Climbed up to the royal
palace, and even with the Eiffel Tower in our sights, agonisingly still a couple of hours from our destination.
'Le rouleur' took over the navigation and we followed the squeak to the Arc de Triomphe, then the Eiffel
Tower!
We'd only done it! Putney Cricket amateurs now lean, mean cycling machines. Including Brian! Some of
us didn't even have bikes at Christmas. We survived the South Downs, hotels and ferries of dubious value,
a sub-optimal diet and some hangovers of hell.
Wibbers regaled us with tales about his new Skybox. Le directeur sportif held a fines session. We shared
highlights and lowlights then headed to the Latin Quarters for some drinks; Brexit Blonde, Thunder Bitch
whisky... until 6am.
All in all, an awesome time - incredibly proud of all the lads to have made it to Paris and an outstanding
fundraising total for the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and First Touch. CRY were able to hold two days
of heart screenings in January 2018, and screen over 300 people!
Chapeau!!!
Total raised incl. Gift Aid: £11,408.65

The accounts show a healthy £2,781 profit for the 2017 season. Our bar profit rose sharply from 21% in
2016 to 46.5% in 2017. Exactly where it should be. There were a number of factors that determined the
increase in profit but honesty paid its part! Our membership was up by six, to 57, but we still need to attract
more players to field two sides on a Sunday.
My thanks go to Andy Hyland and Ben Brook for their help in organising the presentation evening which
resulted in a healthy profit of £1,154. We also made £152 from social functions. Thank you to all those that
donated items for the auction. My thanks also to each member who contributed towards the raffle, and to
the highest bidders on the night.
Expenditure: I will highlight the areas with the largest differentials.
Ground account
As stated in last year’s resume' the £898 saving in equipment repairs is due to having the outfield mower
serviced every three years.
Pavilion account
There is little difference over the last two years expenses. My thanks to all for ensuring lights are switched
off when leaving the club house, which resulted in a small saving.
Miscellaneous account
I have shown the Surrey CC affiliation fee in the presentation evening breakdown as this allows the club
to purchase Test tickets which are auctioned on the night. There were no fines for the 2017 season. The
playing/misc. equipment included £350 for a new BBQ, £144 for scoreboard numbers and £250 for extra
cricket balls. The sundries included £104 towards a replacement cup, (£100 was received for the loss of
the original).
I again ask members to settle their annual membership of £100/£40.00 (students) at the earliest
opportunity. Please ensure you bring sufficient monies on the day of a game to cover match fees and no
IOUs behind the bar please. There is no excuse now we can take payment by card! My annual reminder
"only committee members are to go behind the bar, and I would ask all to be vigilant", will go a long way
to ensuring we achieve an acceptable profit percentage.
Improvements to the clubhouse is still a priority and plans have been drafted to this end. Paul McCann has
been working hard to establish what grants are being offered to amateur sports clubs. This isn't proving to
be an easy task, so any suggestions for raising club funds through social events or other means are always
welcome. Have a good season, and please stay for a drink or two after the game. We have set up 'NOWTV'
throughout the summer months to enable you to watch all the sport being aired whilst enjoying a tipple with
your team mates!

THE EVE AND STAN MARSHALL 100 CLUB
The 100 club of Putney Cricket Club is an ideal way of raising much needed funds and a way of winning
cash prizes. If you would like to become a member, which costs £2.00 per number per month by direct
debit, please contact Mike Curtis (michaelhcurtis@hotmail.com). We are eager to increase the existing
membership of 36 during the 2018 season. The six lucky winners drawn at The Presentation Evening on
Sat 04th November 2017 and each receiving a cheque to the value of £100.00 were Paul McCann, Dave
Pegrum, Alice Wibberley, Max Sugden, Mike Curtis and John Greenslade.

TLDR: #notrelegated
A mid table finish highlighted the potential and flaws of the squad. The bowling was superb all season
through and kept us in games that we were well and truly out of. The mix of experience and youth with the
ball holds promise for the upcoming seasons. The batting was a constant shortcoming all season. No
batsman scoring more than 250 runs in the season, no centuries and only 2 half centuries… If we are to
challenge for promotion then the talent and ability of the batting order needs produce the runs.
Off the field, it was a bumper season. Team spirit could not have been higher and it was a great change
having a buzz back in the change room. Long may it continue. With a similar squad set to debut for the
coming season, success is just around the corner. Fix the batting woes and we could be in for one exciting
season.

SATURDAY 2ND
XI REPORT
P W D L A
League 18 11 2 3 2
Friendlies 3 2 - 1 -
An excellent 2017 season where we achieved 1 of our 2 goals - promotion to the Premier division – but
sadly falling short in our aims to win the league. League results were 12 wins, 4 losses, and a couple of
abandonments. We started the season full of promise with a new vice-captain Tushar Bhakre and great
numbers in the preseason, which translated into strong teams and wins early on. There were a lot of new
players into the league teams who made strong contributions in the first half of the season; Tom Gasparre,
Amogh Bendre, Abhi Safai, Ollie Dudman and Charlie Stuckey amongst others. All these guys breathed
new life into the squad and we turned out some great wins, often from tough positions which we may have
dropped previously. Guys stepped at various times and the feeling was we could go all the way this season.
One of the early highlights being the Friday late-night call up for Sam Sud who turned his early Sunday
form into a first league hundred (113) against Wallington.
A big difference in 2017 was the batting improvement where we posted decent scores and shared the load;
5 players scored 200+ for the season and 2 of those got 300+, with 3 centurions. Tom G ran hot or cold
for his 336 @ 34 (top score 108), while Amogh was the rock for us all season with 389 @ 39 (high score
134*). Abhi stepped into the opening role and provided some stability while Tush chipped in with runs but,
as with a lot of us, probably hoped to be more consistent.
Our bowling continues to be our strength each season as Brian Macmillan again amongst it for 23 wickets,
Tush got 24, and Mark Smith finally making his (well deserved) league debut getting 15 in his 6 games.
The skipper (Mike Henshall) turned back the clock in 2017, winning the 2nd XI and the league division
bowling with 33 wickets @ 12.8.
The downfall, as has been the case in the past, was availabilities and a consistent XI each weekend. We
won our first 6 games with largely the same team and suffered when availabilities were poor across the
Saturday league teams. Sadly the 2 games we played the eventual top side Shepperton, were the worst
availability I can recall in recent years. On both occasions we had 20-25 league players unavailable.
Nevertheless, we made the best of it as we could and I was pleased that Ollie, Amogh and Tom all went
up and made contributions to the 1st XI.
From a captain’s point of view, the atmosphere in the 2017 Saturday squads was a terrific improvement
on previous years. There was far more integration across the 2 sides, guys going up to play 1’s and players
like Pete Hall and Mark Smith coming in from Sundays, and most importantly all the players mixed well
and socialised together off the field. A lot of credit to Dev, Saad and Andy in the 1’s for working hard to
develop a real “one squad” feel across Saturday cricket – long may it continue!
For the 2nd XI, a lot of thanks goes to the core regulars like Brian, Doug and Amogh who have been a
pleasure to play cricket with and I think we all had a lot of fun. The biggest thanks from the 2nd XI however
is reserved for Tush who is the heart and soul of the side and his commitment to the team for the entire
season was the key reason for our success. There’s no doubt the side will be in good hands for 2018 and
beyond.

SUNDAY XI REPORT
P W D L A
All 29 18 2 7 2
Reading the Guardian last month, there was an article on the death of cricket. Indian cricket is being
destroyed top down, via the politicians, bookmakers and corrupt businessmen. UK cricket is being
destroyed bottom up, at grassroots by village cricket disintegrating and the ECB and its decisions. Sunday
cricket at Putney was also going south, unless you believe the Smulian propaganda.
So elected on March 16 2017, after a campaign of lies, mistruths, scare stories and contradictions, Mark
‘Advice’ Wibberley and myself set out to achieve a seemingly impossible dream; make Putney CC Sundays
Great Again. What a challenge! Not just great team spirit but a winning team. Is it possible? Could these
two journeymen and leviathans of mediocrity bring together a ragtag bunch of old has beens, young
pretenders, pissheads, prima donnas and general no hopers into a cohesive, effective winning team that
loved a beer and a THUNDERBITCH?
We are not professionals, we possess limited skill and very little natural ability. We are not fit or agile. No,
we are Sunday cricketers. We are too old, too young, too fat, too slow, too forgetful, too hungover,
generally, just not that good. Sunday players need that certain and elusive ‘je ne sais quoi’... So yes, we
did it. We had an amazing season. Not just by winning games (18 out of 29), but also being aesthetically
pleasing (there was talk of a calendar being made!) The team is greater than the sum of its parts. We can
carry Seb bowling his wides, hide the s**t fielders, drop catches (£100+ in the drops tin) and still reign
victorious. And all played in bloody good team spirit. Bar takings went through the roof. Monday mornings
were not so productive. Bacon ipsum dolor amet burgdoggen sausage fatback pancetta, bacon pork loin
alcatra capicola pork chop strip steak t-bone spare ribs cow. Pork chop ribeye hamburger shank kevin
sirloin.
Match reports have been golden. Post match drinking has been golden. The teas have been golden. The
post match awards session have been golden. If you told me at the start of the season that the Banny
Hanumanth duo would put on two consecutive 100 partnerships, and that we would also publish a book,
then I’d have told you that you were barking mad. Memorable trips to many good quality away grounds
and some cracking opposition - too many to mention.
Looking forward to a strong 2018 season. (The difficult second season?) Bring it on!

block, boiler and changing rooms, circa £12,500.
3. Financial Report
Mike reported that the club made a loss of £2,000. The bar was being abused significantly as profit margins
were well below average. In future only committee members to be allowed behind the bar. Once again can
we please make every effort to pay for subs early. Mike Henshall suggested raising subs and was going to
put a proposal together. Will Middleton suggested raising bar prices. Full financial report can be seen on
website. Proposed – Mark Wibberley, Seconded – Hugo Flower
4. Team Secretary Report
James Peters reported (again) that we still had problems with availability from July to the end of the season.
Can we please all try to recruit new members into the club. The club banner will be displayed and more
proactive marketing to the local Putney establishments.
5. Team Captain Reports
Saturday 1st: Piers Jackson was “MIA” therefore we had no report.
Saturday 2nd: Mike Henshall reported that it has been a very successful season, only narrowly missing out
