2020 SEASON ANNUAL REPORT
Management Committee Report
Chairman: Andrew Hyland Vice Chairman: Charlie Smulian Secretary: Paul McCann
It was very much the season that we could not have anticipated as we only started in July. We got the
game on in COVID-secure ways and when we started it was good and enjoyable.
Mike Curtis, Eddie McVarish, Tony Fenton and Julian Day had handed over the reins after decades of
loyal service to the club as Chairman, Groundsman, Fixture Secretary and Vice-Chairman in March.
The whole club is so grateful for all that they have done, Mike leaving on a high having, with Tony
Fenton, refurbished the showers, toilets and bar storage area. What an irony that COVID prevented
us from using the facilities that they worked so hard to create. This builds on their successful revamp
the previous season of the dressing rooms.
When we finally got started on the Lower Common, we did not quite know what to expect. There had
been little pre-season training, even less work on the square, a new groundsman and a whole new set
of restrictions with which to contend. We also said hello to a large number of new members, people
perhaps realising that cricket was now happening and that, frankly, there was not that much else to
do, no foreign travel, no weddings, no stag dos etc. There was no way we could celebrate our 150th
anniversary in 2020, all those arrangements will have to roll over to 2021.
The world did not entirely stand still and club members still welcomed new arrivals into the world.
The club sends its warm congratulations to;
• Tarryn and Andy Hyland on the birth of James Charles Kenneth Hyland on 1st
June 2020
• Paulette and Devon Ebersohn on the birth of Maximo Alexander Ebersohn on 2nd
April 2020
• Zsuzanna and Steve Bone on the birth of Lily Jean Bone on 9th
April 2020
Eddie, our esteemed groundsman for over 35 years, took our warm thanks into retirement in the
winter and what plans we ever had for much-needed spring ground works were shelved because of
COVID. We cut the square only once in the spring and felt we had to leave it alone after that. Kieron
Pierce took over from Eddie and more folk chipped in their labour than ever before under Kieron’s
guidance. But only once we got going.
But in July we did indeed get going and went straight in to Cricket Week, which was a great success,
cricket at home on ten successive days including a one day test match. We rolled our pitches more
than we ever had before, to which they responded, and one strip saw more than 4,000 runs scored
on it.

PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB
2020 SEASON ANNUAL REPORT
Nor did we know how many folk would actually want to play cricket. But what we have learned at
Putney is that the quality of the welcome matters: new members came, we embraced them, they
stayed and so we could put out more sides. We went from two teams on a normal Saturday and
Sunday in 2019 to several weekends in 2020 when we put out seven sides. Terrific stuff. We hope we
can keep them! If nowt else, COVID proved that if there is absolutely nothing else to do in the summer,
people will still want to play cricket!
All the extra sides, combined with cheap beer, a happy atmosphere and a non-dogmatic approach to
social distancing meant that bar takings were also very strong. Frontier outsold Pride by 7 to 1. The
extra revenue has been ploughed back into outfield repair work. We thank the twenty souls who
spread 12 tonnes of top dressing, 6 bags of rye seed, 250kg of fertiliser one Sunday in October. The
seed has taken and we hope to enjoy the fruits in 2021.
To our new members: it was great to have you in 2020 and we hope you found the right side for you.
We look forward to seeing you again in 2021. And to the whole club, thank you for your contributions
on the pitch and off. We are a small club, with ambitions, and we have all learned that you only get
out what effort you are prepared to put in.

PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB
2020 SEASON ANNUAL REPORT
Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer: Andrew Hyland
Despite the many challenges faced during the shortened 2020 season, the club performed as well as
could be expected. Overall, a profit of £16, after allowing for the next allocation (£3,000) of the Phase
2 works to the clubhouse, was generated. This should be considered in light of the many changes the
club underwent during the season and the ‘difficult’ environment in which it operated.
There are a few key items to be taken into account when evaluating the 2020 season’s results.
Many areas of income fell (such as match fees given the shortened season) as can be expected, but
these had corresponding decreases in expenditure (the costs of teas was zero).
The club, thanks to Paul McCann and others, was able to secure grants totalling £3,120 which boosted
the club’s income.
The net bar performance was exceptional given the social restrictions in place and the shortened
season, there was only a 7% fall from the 2019’s position. Thanks to all who generated innovative
solutions, meeting the requirements in place, to continue bar sales so effectively. This performance is
even more remarkable when we factor in that no ‘true’ social events occurred in 2020.
A large amount of work was conducted on the square and outfield in 2020 and this led to an increase
in costs associated with the ground, a significant rise of 69% since 2019. Hopefully, the work conducted
by Kieron Pearce and the many club members who assisted on numerous occasions bears fruit in the
2021 season and beyond.
The committee is committed to improving the facilities available to members and opposition on the
field and in the clubhouse and we are in a sound position to make such improvements. Hopefully, we
will play more cricket in 2021 so that we can enjoy our facilities and each others’ company.

Heading in to 2020 the 1st
XI was looking forward to making a strong promotion push after narrowly
missing out on the last day of the season in 2019. Sadly, Covid-19 had different ideas and the league
season was scrapped and replaced with a smaller regional league padded with friendlies against strong
opposition.
With lockdown lifted and everybody keen to get their cricket fix the club saw a huge influx of new
players which has upped the standard of all the teams. As such selection proved challenging with a
group of 16+ players who could all easily be 1st
XI regulars, a great problem to have!
The 1st
XI saw significant contributions from exciting new players with Harry Waddington, Byron
Langley and Josh Pieters displaying their all-round abilities to go along with those of reliable club
stalwarts like Saad Hannan, Gary Peters, Ben Williamson and Piers Jackson.
I’d like to really highlight two games in particular last season. Firstly a mid-season friendly against
Spencer 3rd
XI gave a great opportunity to pit ourselves against a strong opposition who routinely
finish in the top 3 of their Surrey Championship league. After Putney posted a solid first innings score
of 205/6 in 40 overs the game came down to the last ball with Spencer needing 3 to win. After
watching the ball spoon over the top of point and race towards the boundary we all feared the worst
only to see Bryon Langley’s full stretch dive resembling Superman to claw it back and Alex Ockwell
chasing what seemed to be a lost cause picking the ball up and throwing in for the run out to win by 1
run. The day epitomised a truly team effort with every single player making a significant contribution
that impacted the game with the team fighting down to the wire for the victory against a very good
team.
Secondly the SW15 cup provided the finale to the season and showed the resilience and depth of
quality in the team to return the cup back to Putney. With Roehampton making a solid start of 125-1
Page 11 Return to Contents

off 20 overs on a road the bowling unit dug deep to come back and restrict them to 175ao. After a
typically Putney top order collapse leaving us 50-5 Josh Pieters (70) and Josh Giddings (46*) put on
104 for one of the best partnerships in recent memory to steer us home.
The pace bowling attack, already the strength of the team continues to improve with the addition of
Langley, Pieters and Waddington. However, we must continue to work to be more consistent as
batting and fielding units after showing plenty of promise in both areas.
Despite the challenges of 2020 I look back on the season extremely positively after some very strong
performances, the emergence of talented new players and the increasing togetherness of the team
and club as a whole. Looking forward to 2021 we hope to welcome back the strong squad built last
season and I am extremely confident the team will hit their target of gaining promotion.

2020 was a different year and so was cricket and league season. After 3 months of uncertainty and
many weeks of anticipation cricket was finally On.
We discovered that, although the Fullers league was not taking place, the league had organised a mini
league (Challenge Cup) with 6 other teams.
Putney 2nd team had been in a group that consisted of some old rivals and some clubs we had not
played against in last few years.
We saw some new faces coming into the side and many of its stalwarts contributing to the team’s
cause every week. Ben Jones, Sam Mazurek and others quickly became integral part of the team. Ben
provided solidity on top of the order and Sam reliable hands behind the wickets. The squad also had
its solid core in Brian, James Peters, Tushar, Chin and Tom Seaman.
Even though it was a curtailed season, we had our customary pre and post league friendly fixtures.
The league consisted of 7 games starting with our local rival Roehampton. This promised to be a great
encounter until weather intervened and was eventually abandoned. We then faced some strong sides
including Sheen Park, which was a close game and, despite heroics from Paul McCann, we fell short of
the target. Bitter loss but it would turn out to be our only loss in the league. Then it was Shepperton
where Rolf provided us solid foundation then for likes of Tushar, James Peters to takes us beyond 200
on a good wicket. Strong bowling effort by everyone backed up seriously good fielding gave a
thumping victory eventually blowing them out under 100 runs.
Teddington Town followed next, this was also Tushar's actual last game for real. They were also top
of the table team, one to beat and perhaps a decent send off to Tush. This game was perhaps our best
all round team performance, whilst it was not a smooth ride, we managed to put up a total of 198 off
back of cameo from Tushar and a late partnership with ever reliable Chin and Soham who took us to
Page 13 Return to Contents
PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB

a respectable total. When we took the field we found ourselves taking no wickets in first 20 overs and
leaving just over 100 runs to get. What followed then on was superb bowling effort from Chin backed
by excellent catching from Tushar, Rohit, Rolf to eventually win by 20 runs and take to top spot in the
table.
Last game versus Old Tiffinians was won convincingly again to finish the league season on Top of the
Table and 'Win the Challenge Cup - 2020'
Couple of friendlies followed post leagues fixtures providing us opportunity to make most out of
truncated season, Wins against St James which also saw young Soham take his fist ever 5 wickets and
season ending with Serbian Sloggers where Adam Sayer took the stage with bat and ball on a cold and
windy day.
During the season we had our usual up' and down's as a team but managed to win key moments. It
was great to see some new faces come in immediately contribute to teams cause. We said goodbye
to Tushar and Phil Milbourne both of them have been contributed greatly to 2's success in the last few
years.
We now look forward to 2021 season and putting up a strong team and hopefully challenging for the
Top places in the league table.

For the first time in the club’s history, Putney CC fielded a 3rd
XI in the Surrey County league system. It
was a great honour to lead the team and I set myself a simple, but not necessarily easy objective for
the season: to develop a core squad of players who would turn up to play for the 3rd
XI on a regular
basis.
Our performance in the league was mixed. We played six matches, won three, lost two and one was
abandoned. We also played five friendlies throughout the season, winning two and losing three. On
the surface, not a spectacular return, but certainly a decent one for a side’s inaugural competitive
season.
In total, 31 individuals played for the 3rd
XI in a league fixture, with 19 players playing for the side on
more than one occasion.
The team’s strength was our bowling unit. Charlie Smulian often opened the bowling and his
performances for the side improved as the season progressed, ending the year with 9 wickets at an
average of 16.56. Callum Goddard, Savan Patel and Adam Sayer were three others who consistently
delivered strong performances with the ball. Callum ended the year with 10 wickets at an average of
14, Savan with 9 wickets at an average of 26.78, while Adam finished the season with figures of 9
wickets at an average of 13.78.
We were inconsistent with the bat, surpassing a score of 200 just once in the season. But there was
much promise in some of our performances – most notably in matches against Whiteley Village and
Teddington Town. Girish Nagpaul was the team’s go-to opening batsman – often laying the
groundwork for our bigger totals, including a fine half century away at Old Hamptonians. Billy Pople –
a fantastic addition to the side – undoubtedly provided us with the individual performance of the
season, a very impressive 92 against Teddington Town.
Page 15 Return to Contents
PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB
2020 SEASON ANNUAL REPORT
The standout performer of the side was Niket Patel. A true all-rounder, Niket scored 198 runs at an
average of 24.75 in our middle order and took 15 wickets at an average of 9.07 as first change bowler.
He deservedly earned both the batting (Devon Ebershon Trophy) and bowling (Gary Peters Trophy)
awards at the end of season ceremony.
Fielding would be one area of improvement for next season. We often made life hard for ourselves
with some sloppy fielding on the deck and routinely dropping regulation catches. Despite this, we had
a star fielder in Barney Hayward who took two outstanding catches at gully and generally raised the
side’s standards in the field whenever he played.
Returning to the objective I set myself at the start of the season – I would say that we achieved it. We
managed to build a core squad of 3rd
XI players who were not only great fun on the field, but were
equally fun off it back in the clubhouse after matches too.
While there will be a new captain at the helm next season, I have faith that the foundations we laid in
2020 will set the 3rd
XI up for future success in the coming years.

A curtailed but entertaining season. JJ took over from Mark ‘Advice’ Wibberley as vice skipper after 3
years’ service. Big thanks to JJ for the millennial(?) point of view on all things cricket and Boris.
At the start of July, there was hope that the season was imminent, positive noises having been made
by the ECB. Then on 3rd July, dejection. The Prime Minister announced that cricket could not resume
as it wasn’t judged safe…
…mercifully, there was a U-turn within hours, and we set up the MPSGA Golden ThunderBitch Trophy
vs the Sunday 2s, avoiding all vectors.
Taylor’s (teacher of Greek and Latin) exploits will last longer in the annals of history than both of those
dead civilisations, so let's move on.
We then won 5, lost 6. One of those losses batting last on a 6th innings on the same strip, being skittled
for 44 vs Roehampton - so that can be discounted, not that it really matters anyway.
A truly magnificent close victory at Elsted/Elstead (see DDYear Winner below) plus another close one
versus Ploughmans, the traditional victory vs Hyde Farmers (5 in a row now Krusty), and a very
successful game vs Ockers & his Exeter/Essex Uni Old Boys - the day raising £1K for CRY and the club
taking £1,600 behind the bar. We should have beaten Malden Wanderers but the batting unit
(including Unit) failed, though we did drink them all out of Wimbledon Pale Ale. Jarbowler captained
us to the inaugural win in the District Line Kabir Trophy vs Upminster.
Milestones
• Brooksey and Wibbers both played their 200th game for Putney
• 100th run for Max, Nicky and Matui
• 500th run for Gus Chumocracy Brown
• 2000th run for Jarmola

This was a fabulous season that everyone in the committee worked extremely hard to ensure we had
this season.
The Sunday 2's came into the season with an unbridled enthusiasm and optimism. We started the
season off with the most important game of the season. The Make Putney Sunday Great Again Golden
Thunderbitch Trophy, or more affectionately known as the MPSGAGTBT. This was a solid team effort
that I am immensely proud of. Taylor getting a 7-For in the match and knocking over Brooksey’s off
stump to complete a hat-trick was beautiful. I assume the constant nets in Lockdown paid off.
A lot of new faces turned up and helped to make this an incredible season. The new players did stick
around for the whole season which is fantastic. The season was not very successful results wise, but
the great thing about Sundays is that it is more the enjoyment and not the results and giving everyone
a go. The team really bonded over their love of beer, cricket and Putney Cricket Club.
The top 5 highlights of the season were:
1. Winning the MPSGAGTBT (2' vs 1's)
2. Winning The Putney Ashes (2's vs 3's)
3. Taylor getting a 7-For in the MPSGAGTBT match and mainly knocking over Brooksey to
complete his hat-trick
4. JBS constantly batting for an entire innings and then keeping for 40 overs
5. The young man Soham getting his first Five-For
This has been one of my favourite seasons to be a part of PCC. This was an exceptional season. I have
unfortunately taken the decision to step down as Captain of the Sunday 2's. This was an incredibly
hard decision to make and it has been an incredible honour leading these hapless fools into battle
every week. It was a great privilege to set the base for an upcoming successful 2021 season, for
whoever fills my boots and runs the 2's, I am sure with the advice and guidance of the committee and
Brooksey it will be a seamless transition.

2020 was tough. If it were to be compared to a feeling, it might be akin to the devastation one might
feel at being clean bowled first ball to give a bowler his hattrick (as seen in Saunders vs BK). However,
as has happened throughout history, moments of strife help foster a sense of community and a desire
to work together to create a better world. In Putney Cricket Club’s case, the fact that we put out a
Sunday 3s week-in, week-out throughout the summer was a fine example of this!
With an influx of new players and the regular appearance of old hands, the 3s had a relatively
successful season. An immediate shout-out must go to Amogh, who, despite the burden of Saturday
2s captaincy weighing heavily on his shoulders, regularly took the 3s to pitches far and wide across the
Surrey countryside.
To the highlights! 2nd
August vs. Sutton (A). An absolute demolition of the opposition led to a
resounding win. A solid 25 from Manish and 35* from Adam Young saw us across the line, after a
ruthless bowling attack blew the unassuming batters away. A solid 3-28 from Saunders was
impressive, but a mind-blowing debut from Harry Hedges saw him record bowling figures of 6 overs,
4 maidens, 5 wickets for 2 runs – the sort of figures anyone dreams of.
With confidence high, the 3s went to Highgate. Whereas one player dominated at Sutton, this was a
true team performance. 50s from Amogh, Rohit and BK, plus a torturous and Sibley-esque 47 from
Madden set the opposition 335 to win. A daunting target in any circumstance, made impossible by the
bowlers bringing the fire, BK displaying his credentials as a formidable all-rounder with figures of 4-
12.
On to my first match with the 3s and my personal game of the season. The team trekked their way to
deepest darkest Surrey, where the green fields roll on for miles around. A short boundary and some
indifferent bowling from the captain of the day led to the oppo posting 220 – achievable, but no easy
feat. A solid opening partnership from Dolley and Momin laid the foundation for Sayer and Dan Barber
to blast our way close to the total. A penultimate-ball 6 from Sorger sealed an awesome victory and
one that I will remember for a long time.
As September neared, the 3s kept to their winning ways against Christchurch, a blistering century from
Sorger simply too good for them. The month of September, however, was not so great. The loss
against Marble Hill perhaps the most chastening, set in excess of 300, despite the heroics of 15-year-

old Abdul – a 4-for on debut showing promise for more great performances to come. In our last game
of the season, we faced our easiest opposition, a team that struggled to win all season – the Sunday
2s. However, they brought their A Game and, even with Girish’s metronomic bowling and power-
hitting down the order, the 2s triumphed, Beedle’s proudest moment of the season.
With so many highs and so many phenomenal achievements, here’s hoping for another busy and
successful season for the 3s in 2021 – see you at the clubhouse!

  • 4. Page 4 Return to Contents PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB 2020 SEASON ANNUAL REPORT Management Committee Report Chairman: Andrew Hyland Vice Chairman: Charlie Smulian Secretary: Paul McCann It was very much the season that we could not have anticipated as we only started in July. We got the game on in COVID-secure ways and when we started it was good and enjoyable. Mike Curtis, Eddie McVarish, Tony Fenton and Julian Day had handed over the reins after decades of loyal service to the club as Chairman, Groundsman, Fixture Secretary and Vice-Chairman in March. The whole club is so grateful for all that they have done, Mike leaving on a high having, with Tony Fenton, refurbished the showers, toilets and bar storage area. What an irony that COVID prevented us from using the facilities that they worked so hard to create. This builds on their successful revamp the previous season of the dressing rooms. When we finally got started on the Lower Common, we did not quite know what to expect. There had been little pre-season training, even less work on the square, a new groundsman and a whole new set of restrictions with which to contend. We also said hello to a large number of new members, people perhaps realising that cricket was now happening and that, frankly, there was not that much else to do, no foreign travel, no weddings, no stag dos etc. There was no way we could celebrate our 150th anniversary in 2020, all those arrangements will have to roll over to 2021. The world did not entirely stand still and club members still welcomed new arrivals into the world. The club sends its warm congratulations to; • Tarryn and Andy Hyland on the birth of James Charles Kenneth Hyland on 1st June 2020 • Paulette and Devon Ebersohn on the birth of Maximo Alexander Ebersohn on 2nd April 2020 • Zsuzanna and Steve Bone on the birth of Lily Jean Bone on 9th April 2020 Eddie, our esteemed groundsman for over 35 years, took our warm thanks into retirement in the winter and what plans we ever had for much-needed spring ground works were shelved because of COVID. We cut the square only once in the spring and felt we had to leave it alone after that. Kieron Pierce took over from Eddie and more folk chipped in their labour than ever before under Kieron’s guidance. But only once we got going. But in July we did indeed get going and went straight in to Cricket Week, which was a great success, cricket at home on ten successive days including a one day test match. We rolled our pitches more than we ever had before, to which they responded, and one strip saw more than 4,000 runs scored on it.
  • 5. Page 5 Return to Contents PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB 2020 SEASON ANNUAL REPORT Nor did we know how many folk would actually want to play cricket. But what we have learned at Putney is that the quality of the welcome matters: new members came, we embraced them, they stayed and so we could put out more sides. We went from two teams on a normal Saturday and Sunday in 2019 to several weekends in 2020 when we put out seven sides. Terrific stuff. We hope we can keep them! If nowt else, COVID proved that if there is absolutely nothing else to do in the summer, people will still want to play cricket! All the extra sides, combined with cheap beer, a happy atmosphere and a non-dogmatic approach to social distancing meant that bar takings were also very strong. Frontier outsold Pride by 7 to 1. The extra revenue has been ploughed back into outfield repair work. We thank the twenty souls who spread 12 tonnes of top dressing, 6 bags of rye seed, 250kg of fertiliser one Sunday in October. The seed has taken and we hope to enjoy the fruits in 2021. To our new members: it was great to have you in 2020 and we hope you found the right side for you. We look forward to seeing you again in 2021. And to the whole club, thank you for your contributions on the pitch and off. We are a small club, with ambitions, and we have all learned that you only get out what effort you are prepared to put in. Doug Shaw on behalf of the 2020 Management Committee Chairman

  • 8. Page 8 Return to Contents PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB 2020 SEASON ANNUAL REPORT Treasurer’s Report Treasurer: Andrew Hyland Despite the many challenges faced during the shortened 2020 season, the club performed as well as could be expected. Overall, a profit of £16, after allowing for the next allocation (£3,000) of the Phase 2 works to the clubhouse, was generated. This should be considered in light of the many changes the club underwent during the season and the ‘difficult’ environment in which it operated. There are a few key items to be taken into account when evaluating the 2020 season’s results. Many areas of income fell (such as match fees given the shortened season) as can be expected, but these had corresponding decreases in expenditure (the costs of teas was zero). The club, thanks to Paul McCann and others, was able to secure grants totalling £3,120 which boosted the club’s income. The net bar performance was exceptional given the social restrictions in place and the shortened season, there was only a 7% fall from the 2019’s position. Thanks to all who generated innovative solutions, meeting the requirements in place, to continue bar sales so effectively. This performance is even more remarkable when we factor in that no ‘true’ social events occurred in 2020. A large amount of work was conducted on the square and outfield in 2020 and this led to an increase in costs associated with the ground, a significant rise of 69% since 2019. Hopefully, the work conducted by Kieron Pearce and the many club members who assisted on numerous occasions bears fruit in the 2021 season and beyond. The committee is committed to improving the facilities available to members and opposition on the field and in the clubhouse and we are in a sound position to make such improvements. Hopefully, we will play more cricket in 2021 so that we can enjoy our facilities and each others’ company. Andrew Hyland Treasurer

Sadly, Covid-19 had different ideas and the league season was scrapped and replaced with a smaller regional league padded with friendlies against strong opposition. With lockdown lifted and everybody keen to get their cricket fix the club saw a huge influx of new players which has upped the standard of all the teams. As such selection proved challenging with a group of 16+ players who could all easily be 1st XI regulars, a great problem to have! The 1st XI saw significant contributions from exciting new players with Harry Waddington, Byron Langley and Josh Pieters displaying their all-round abilities to go along with those of reliable club stalwarts like Saad Hannan, Gary Peters, Ben Williamson and Piers Jackson. I’d like to really highlight two games in particular last season. Firstly a mid-season friendly against Spencer 3rd XI gave a great opportunity to pit ourselves against a strong opposition who routinely finish in the top 3 of their Surrey Championship league. After Putney posted a solid first innings score of 205/6 in 40 overs the game came down to the last ball with Spencer needing 3 to win. After watching the ball spoon over the top of point and race towards the boundary we all feared the worst only to see Bryon Langley’s full stretch dive resembling Superman to claw it back and Alex Ockwell chasing what seemed to be a lost cause picking the ball up and throwing in for the run out to win by 1 run. The day epitomised a truly team effort with every single player making a significant contribution that impacted the game with the team fighting down to the wire for the victory against a very good team. Secondly the SW15 cup provided the finale to the season and showed the resilience and depth of quality in the team to return the cup back to Putney. With Roehampton making a solid start of 125-1

After a typically Putney top order collapse leaving us 50-5 Josh Pieters (70) and Josh Giddings (46*) put on 104 for one of the best partnerships in recent memory to steer us home. The pace bowling attack, already the strength of the team continues to improve with the addition of Langley, Pieters and Waddington. However, we must continue to work to be more consistent as batting and fielding units after showing plenty of promise in both areas. Despite the challenges of 2020 I look back on the season extremely positively after some very strong performances, the emergence of talented new players and the increasing togetherness of the team and club as a whole. Looking forward to 2021 we hope to welcome back the strong squad built last season and I am extremely confident the team will hit their target of gaining promotion. R.E. After 3 months of uncertainty and many weeks of anticipation cricket was finally On. We discovered that, although the Fullers league was not taking place, the league had organised a mini league (Challenge Cup) with 6 other teams. Putney 2nd team had been in a group that consisted of some old rivals and some clubs we had not played against in last few years. We saw some new faces coming into the side and many of its stalwarts contributing to the team’s cause every week. Ben Jones, Sam Mazurek and others quickly became integral part of the team. Ben provided solidity on top of the order and Sam reliable hands behind the wickets. The squad also had its solid core in Brian, James Peters, Tushar, Chin and Tom Seaman. Even though it was a curtailed season, we had our customary pre and post league friendly fixtures. The league consisted of 7 games starting with our local rival Roehampton. This promised to be a great encounter until weather intervened and was eventually abandoned. We then faced some strong sides including Sheen Park, which was a close game and, despite heroics from Paul McCann, we fell short of the target. Bitter loss but it would turn out to be our only loss in the league. Then it was Shepperton where Rolf provided us solid foundation then for likes of Tushar, James Peters to takes us beyond 200 on a good wicket. Strong bowling effort by everyone backed up seriously good fielding gave a thumping victory eventually blowing them out under 100 runs. Teddington Town followed next, this was also Tushar's actual last game for real. They were also top of the table team, one to beat and perhaps a decent send off to Tush. This game was perhaps our best all round team performance, whilst it was not a smooth ride, we managed to put up a total of 198 off back of cameo from Tushar and a late partnership with ever reliable Chin and Soham who took us to

When we took the field we found ourselves taking no wickets in first 20 overs and leaving just over 100 runs to get. What followed then on was superb bowling effort from Chin backed by excellent catching from Tushar, Rohit, Rolf to eventually win by 20 runs and take to top spot in the table. Last game versus Old Tiffinians was won convincingly again to finish the league season on Top of the Table and 'Win the Challenge Cup - 2020' Couple of friendlies followed post leagues fixtures providing us opportunity to make most out of truncated season, Wins against St James which also saw young Soham take his fist ever 5 wickets and season ending with Serbian Sloggers where Adam Sayer took the stage with bat and ball on a cold and windy day. During the season we had our usual up' and down's as a team but managed to win key moments. It was great to see some new faces come in immediately contribute to teams cause. We said goodbye to Tushar and Phil Milbourne both of them have been contributed greatly to 2's success in the last few years. We now look forward to 2021 season and putting up a strong team and hopefully challenging for the Top places in the league table. Putney Trophy – Saturday 2nd XI Batsman of the Year Amogh Bendre H.C. It was a great honour to lead the team and I set myself a simple, but not necessarily easy objective for the season: to develop a core squad of players who would turn up to play for the 3rd XI on a regular basis. Our performance in the league was mixed. We played six matches, won three, lost two and one was abandoned. We also played five friendlies throughout the season, winning two and losing three. On the surface, not a spectacular return, but certainly a decent one for a side’s inaugural competitive season. In total, 31 individuals played for the 3rd XI in a league fixture, with 19 players playing for the side on more than one occasion. The team’s strength was our bowling unit. Charlie Smulian often opened the bowling and his performances for the side improved as the season progressed, ending the year with 9 wickets at an average of 16.56. Callum Goddard, Savan Patel and Adam Sayer were three others who consistently delivered strong performances with the ball. Callum ended the year with 10 wickets at an average of 14, Savan with 9 wickets at an average of 26.78, while Adam finished the season with figures of 9 wickets at an average of 13.78. We were inconsistent with the bat, surpassing a score of 200 just once in the season. But there was much promise in some of our performances – most notably in matches against Whiteley Village and Teddington Town. Girish Nagpaul was the team’s go-to opening batsman – often laying the groundwork for our bigger totals, including a fine half century away at Old Hamptonians. Billy Pople – a fantastic addition to the side – undoubtedly provided us with the individual performance of the season, a very impressive 92 against Teddington Town.
  • 15. Page 15 Return to Contents PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB 2020 SEASON ANNUAL REPORT The standout performer of the side was Niket Patel. A true all-rounder, Niket scored 198 runs at an average of 24.75 in our middle order and took 15 wickets at an average of 9.07 as first change bowler. He deservedly earned both the batting (Devon Ebershon Trophy) and bowling (Gary Peters Trophy) awards at the end of season ceremony. Fielding would be one area of improvement for next season. We often made life hard for ourselves with some sloppy fielding on the deck and routinely dropping regulation catches. Despite this, we had a star fielder in Barney Hayward who took two outstanding catches at gully and generally raised the side’s standards in the field whenever he played. Returning to the objective I set myself at the start of the season – I would say that we achieved it. We managed to build a core squad of 3rd XI players who were not only great fun on the field, but were equally fun off it back in the clubhouse after matches too. While there will be a new captain at the helm next season, I have faith that the foundations we laid in 2020 will set the 3rd XI up for future success in the coming years. This was a fabulous season that everyone in the committee worked extremely hard to ensure we had this season. The Sunday 2's came into the season with an unbridled enthusiasm and optimism. We started the season off with the most important game of the season. The Make Putney Sunday Great Again Golden Thunderbitch Trophy, or more affectionately known as the MPSGAGTBT. This was a solid team effort that I am immensely proud of. Taylor getting a 7-For in the match and knocking over Brooksey’s off stump to complete a hat-trick was beautiful. I assume the constant nets in Lockdown paid off. A lot of new faces turned up and helped to make this an incredible season. The new players did stick around for the whole season which is fantastic. The season was not very successful results wise, but the great thing about Sundays is that it is more the enjoyment and not the results and giving everyone a go. The team really bonded over their love of beer, cricket and Putney Cricket Club. The top 5 highlights of the season were: 1. Winning the MPSGAGTBT (2' vs 1's) 2. Winning The Putney Ashes (2's vs 3's) 3. Taylor getting a 7-For in the MPSGAGTBT match and mainly knocking over Brooksey to complete his hat-trick 4. JBS constantly batting for an entire innings and then keeping for 40 overs 5. The young man Soham getting his first Five-For This has been one of my favourite seasons to be a part of PCC. This was an exceptional season. I have unfortunately taken the decision to step down as Captain of the Sunday 2's. This was an incredibly hard decision to make and it has been an incredible honour leading these hapless fools into battle every week. It was a great privilege to set the base for an upcoming successful 2021 season, for whoever fills my boots and runs the 2's, I am sure with the advice and guidance of the committee and Brooksey it will be a seamless transition.

However, as has happened throughout history, moments of strife help foster a sense of community and a desire to work together to create a better world. In Putney Cricket Club’s case, the fact that we put out a Sunday 3s week-in, week-out throughout the summer was a fine example of this! With an influx of new players and the regular appearance of old hands, the 3s had a relatively successful season. An immediate shout-out must go to Amogh, who, despite the burden of Saturday 2s captaincy weighing heavily on his shoulders, regularly took the 3s to pitches far and wide across the Surrey countryside. To the highlights! 2nd August vs. Sutton (A). An absolute demolition of the opposition led to a resounding win. A solid 25 from Manish and 35* from Adam Young saw us across the line, after a ruthless bowling attack blew the unassuming batters away. A solid 3-28 from Saunders was impressive, but a mind-blowing debut from Harry Hedges saw him record bowling figures of 6 overs, 4 maidens, 5 wickets for 2 runs – the sort of figures anyone dreams of. With confidence high, the 3s went to Highgate. Whereas one player dominated at Sutton, this was a true team performance. 50s from Amogh, Rohit and BK, plus a torturous and Sibley-esque 47 from Madden set the opposition 335 to win. A daunting target in any circumstance, made impossible by the bowlers bringing the fire, BK displaying his credentials as a formidable all-rounder with figures of 4- 12. On to my first match with the 3s and my personal game of the season. The team trekked their way to deepest darkest Surrey, where the green fields roll on for miles around. A short boundary and some indifferent bowling from the captain of the day led to the oppo posting 220 – achievable, but no easy feat. A solid opening partnership from Dolley and Momin laid the foundation for Sayer and Dan Barber to blast our way close to the total. A penultimate-ball 6 from Sorger sealed an awesome victory and one that I will remember for a long time. As September neared, the 3s kept to their winning ways against Christchurch, a blistering century from Sorger simply too good for them. The month of September, however, was not so great. The loss against Marble Hill perhaps the most chastening, set in excess of 300, despite the heroics of 15-year-

In our last game of the season, we faced our easiest opposition, a team that struggled to win all season – the Sunday 2s. However, they brought their A Game and, even with Girish’s metronomic bowling and power- hitting down the order, the 2s triumphed, Beedle’s proudest moment of the season. With so many highs and so many phenomenal achievements, here’s hoping for another busy and successful season for the 3s in 2021 – see you at the clubhouse!
