From the Bowls Committee
With the season well underway, the Bowls Committee has purchased new jacks, Grippo, bowls cloths and spray
chalk. We are using the new jacks for pennant and night bowls competitions only. There are some jacks in the
cupboard in the hall to be used for the championship games. The new jacks will of course be used for the finals of

With the help of the Board, we are purchasing a new ramp for our wheelchair bound guests.

down at the bowls club. No doubt they have images of Crackerjack in
their heads and picture me partaking of endless 'ponies' of beer, hoeing
into the cheese wheel and investing my savings in the swear jar.
My consistent response is that the bowls club is actually my country
town. In the middle of all the hectic craziness of 21st century city life, it's
whereIgotorelaxandenjoythecompanyoffriendsfromvastlydifferent
walks of life, age groups and backgrounds. It's a place where I share many
laughs, a few tears, and have the chance to learn a bit about life from an
array of mentors.
Like any country town, we have our ups and downs. People move in and out, become more or less
involved, and disagree from time to time. But over time our common values, our commitment to the
place, and our shared experiences, all bind us together. The club, made up of its people, continues to
evolve and grow and it is a delight to be a part of that journey.
This newsletter is filled with news and stories about the life of the club. Behind each story is a
contributionbyindividuals,committees,teamsandgroups;allvoluntarilycommittingtheirtimetomake
this 'town' a place where we all want to spend part of our lives. Even the preparation of the newsletter
itself takes time, patience and commitment.
All of this activity is a sign of a healthy club. Attendances at Thursday night dinners are up, club
championship games are well underway, the productive garden is booming, and we are playing
competitive bowls in three different pennant competitions.
On a sadder note, our longstanding greenkeeper Darren Walls is gravely ill and our thoughts are with
him and his family. We will continue to monitor his progress through this difficult time. Meanwhile,
interimarrangementshavebeenputin placeanda majorrenovationof thegrassgreen will still takeplace
over the break. Your patience and consideration regarding the green are truly appreciated.
So as we enjoy the festive season, let's take stock of how fortunate we
are to be part of this 'town'. Take the time to chat with someone you
haven't spoken to for a while. Make our guests and barefoot bowlers feel
welcome (and please, be patient if they do break rules of etiquette from
time to time). Show some appreciation to our wonderful staff who work
so hard to keep the place ticking over.
On behalf of the entire Board of Management I wish you a joyous festive
season and a bright and happy new year.

for introducing the paddle pop sticks for our raffle. It’s working very well and is much less tedious for
the duty rink team who had to tear and fold a lot of raffle tickets. Table numbers that reflect the rinks
played on have also been purchased, thanks to Lisa and Dick.
The Bowls Committee is working on putting the duties of the Team Manager in the Team Manager’s
folders.
Please note that the Board decreed that it is CoMBC policy that on Saturday Pennant, the scheduled
break shall be taken in line with the Bowls Victoria Rules.

From the Selectors
We are seven rounds into the 2016/17 pennant season and results are very much a mixed bag. All three teams have had one draw due to
inclement weather otherwise Division 3 has a win/loss ratio of 3 and 3 and sits 6th of 10 on the ladder. Division 5 is 2 and 4 and is 9th of
10 on the ladder and Division 7 is 2 and 3 and is 5th of 9 on the ladder and breathing down the necks of Williamstown and Port Melbourne
for a spot in the four and a finals berth.
This pennant season to date has been no different to others in recent memory in respect of a large number of bowlers being unavailable
for pennant week after week. This frustrates the Selectors in their quest to develop settled sides and even keep rinks together. This is just
a fact of life however and we are mindful that there is life away from bowls and rightly so.
However there is light at the end of the tunnel as it is envisaged that in the very near future we
will have a full list of bowlers to select from. This will enable the selectors to remain focused
on their objective of consolidating our top two sides in Divisions 3 and 5 for next season. It is
acknowledgedthatwhenbowlersinDivision3areunavailable,thenbothDivision5and7suffer
with personnel being required to be promoted to higher divisions. In this regard we would like
to thank all those members who have answered the call and made themselves available for a
game of bowls in Division 7 so that we would not have to forfeit.
It goes without saying that Selectors are neither omniscient nor infallible and if anyone has any
constructive suggestions or any issues at all relating to bowls, please approach your friendly
selector so that these matters can be discussed at the selection table.
Don't forget coaching on Tuesday nights because Greg is an approachable coach who knows
his stuff and there is no one in this club who couldn't use a tip or two to improve their bowls.
Naturally Thursday night is our main practice night so please have a roll if that suits and even
stay afterwards to put the nose bag on for a feed at the "members' meal" and perhaps make
inroads into our huge stockpile of "150th Birthday wine".

bowls at no cost to help with the restock. A set of Aero size 1s and a set of Aero size 2s.
The Bowls Committee would like to thank Bowls Australia for its donation. These bowls will go towards helping members new to the sport
get into bowls in an affordable manner. We have seen the benefits already with a large number of newer members. We are still floored by
the generosity exhibited by Bowls Australia and look forward to using their donation to help promote and grow the membership of the club
and introduce new people to the sport of bowls. Thank you Neil.

Gerry O’Dea, better known as GOD, was a member of the City of
Melbourne Bowls Club for over thirty years. He is remembered
fondly for his detailed stories and his gentle intellect.
Gerry joined the Bowls Club in 1986 on the advice of the retiring
publican of the Metropolitan Hotel, as the hotel was shutting for
renovations. He joined the committee in 1991, becoming Vice
Presidentin1995followingthefire,andthenDeputyChairofthenew
Board in 2007. During the 13 years of negotiations to build a new
clubhouse, Gerry was a vital contributor who met with councillors,
planned strategies, wrote letters, attended Council committee
meetingsandsupportedCommunityevents.Heretiredin2010after
20 consecutive years on the Board.
His first game was a social match. Paul Davis tells the story of Gerry’s
first match and has been able to quote Gerry directly.
“MyfirstgamewasasocialmixedinwithPrince’sPark,playingsecond
opposite Jack Collins, long time bowler and past president of this
august club. I couldn’t believe how friendly it was .Everyone
introducedthemselvesandontopofthatbecauseitwasmyfirstgame,
they gave me a card with everyone’s name on it. I had put the card in
my pocket and halfway through the game my team mates asked me

have to check with him. They were quick to tell me that both sides
should keep score. I told them “You will just have to trust Jack but if
you want to know any player’s name, I’m your man. I’ve got this card
you see....”
How did Gerry acquire his nickname? A former member John Cus

his garden for the ladies in the club. It was a highlight of my Saturdays
to receive a flower from Gerry. He loved his garden: he had many
happy memories of sharing it with his wife Bonnie who he nursed
though Parkinson’s disease. After Bonnie passed, Gerry was not
enjoying good health and such was the love and respect we had for

Bonnie’s garden. Alas, Gerry couldn’t be there but he left his
trademark Esky filled with VB. He told us that his neighbour was very

ThestorythatmostmembersrecallastheonethatillustratesGOD’s
intellect, judgement and wit occurred at an Annual General Meeting
where most positions were contested and the club was divided into
bitterly opposing camps. As the scrutineers were counting the votes,
the tension was broken by Gerry taking the microphone.
“I can announce that Jaydee Hajianfer has been elected as Treasurer
oftheclub.MostofyouwillknowthatJaydeeisanIranianrefugeeand
he has been having difficulties in obtaining Australian citizenship. Well
Jaydee you should start writing a letter straight away to Phillip
Ruddock, Minister for Immigration and tell him that you, Jaydee have
been elected UNOPPOSED, no less, as Treasurer of the City of
Melbourne Bowls Club.” This put the importance of the bowls club
politics into true perspective.
Gerry was a part of the team that won the Division 8 section flag in
2005/06. He was also part of the winning mid week pennant team
2013/14 and although unable to play in the finals turned up with food
and drinks (VB) for the spectators. He was also able to see both 1st
and 2nd teams win the finals to move up a division last season.

lead on turning what was an idea into a reality.
In no time Kaz Rothwell, Deb Dowling , Zac Potier, Jeff Moore and
Gary had all volunteered their services and this small enthusiastic
group immediately started planning the event.
Club Manager Zac did a great job in organising German Hacker-
Pschorr, Hofbräu, Paulaner, and Spaten beers to be on tap, running
banners across the room and arranging Oktoberfest t-shirts for the
bar staff to wear.
And in what was a fantastic coup Zac was also able to arrange a deal
whereby all attendees got to keep a glass stein with their first beer
purchase.
Jeff Moore by virtue of his friendship with club member and very
talented musician John Smith was put in change of music. As a result

band Annabelle Eve & Creature Comfort who did a great job. John
and Annabelle were supported by some piped 'Oompah pah' music

The food was provided by Spitting Image and included Gourmet
sausages –bratwurst sauerkraut - bavarian pretzels - Wiener
schnitzel German style potato salad with vinaigrette dressing -
spaetzle inspired pasta salad - red cabbage salad - apple strudel -
homemade apple strudel - whipped cream.
Kaz and Roger Scott set up the tables beer hall style and added some
chequered wrap and various dips for each table and the main room
looked fantastic.

Projects
Our project manager Laurie has completed
installing the heat extractor /vent in the storage
room and has also affixed the geometric hanging
rails in the corridor. The hanging rails have been
used to accommodate photographs of historical
significance. At Zac's request he has relocated the
bin from the BBQ area, thus creating more space.
He has also installed a buzzer for the rear door.
Laurie's next project involves planning and

and went down but it did show me that anyone can compete on the day.
James and I played in the pairs comp and we won our first two games and lost our third. Dave, Gary and I played on the Monday in the triples
competition. We didn’t manage to get a win but it was great experience for both Gary and myself and we got to see Dave put in some great
bowls against some class skips. On Tuesday Kaz and I played in the mixed pairs competition and we had a blast, We got beaten in our first
game and won our last two to finish on a high.
It was so much fun and great for your game to play against better opposition that I would really recommend to everyone to go and play the
Vic Open it will only improve you game.

Thursday Club Meals
Attendance this year has seen a wonderful improvement on last year and even better than
two years ago. We got off to a great start with the selectors headed by Colin and Jack with
their tasty pastas and desserts (45 diners). Russell and Maria followed with their rather hot
Acapulco chicken (about 37); Rocket and Madeleine (mainly the former) served up a chicken
curry and Thai salad (about 33). Lisa and James went into overdrive with their Vietnamese
banquet (about 41). Nan and Gay’s succulent lamb shoulders were devoured by a hungry 36.
But the all time record was soundly and triumphantly achieved by Bob and Mary from New
York, with their Great American Grill: score 51 paying diners plus the chefs: equals 53.
All meals have operated at a profit, some by as much as $100, so it will not matter at all if
we occasionally go over budget.
There are three dinners in December, Lynne and Peter (who opted out and played in the Novice final instead!!!), Grant and his new
bride Melissa, and, on the 15th, Tony and Marjorie. We begin the New Year on January 12th with Robyn and Gary (I suspect it will
be more Robyn than Gary).
What has been especially pleasing is the way members have volunteered to clean up after. Some have been dragooned, but have
done so cheerfully. Some, like Irene, Nan and Dean, seem so willing we must be careful not to exploit them so much.
Russell King
Update from the Manager
Our peak time is upon us with December already fully booked. Extra
efforts will be made to ensure the members are taken care of,
however we do ask for your patience at times during this period.
The synthetic green is pretty full during this time so if you did want
a bowl on the synthetic please check with the staff to see what is
available. Grass green rinks are always available with only the
occasional barefoot bowling booking mostly confined to Friday lunch
times. When playing championship games it is worth checking
availability with the office.
We have a new staff member Beth who you may have already met.
Please introduce yourself and make her feel welcome.

The club’s Christmas Tree has been put up and this year,
Rosemary and Robyn have organised for CoMBC to
show support to the Salvation Army’s Christmas drive
where donations of toys and/or non-perishable food are
requested. Gifts are to be new and unwrapped, no soft
toys, and it has been noted that vouchers / gift cards are
well received for teenagers. Non-perishable foods
ideally have the pull ring lid however not mandatory. If
you are interested in contributing to this drive, please
leave your items under the Christmas tree by noon on
Saturday 10 December. Rosemary and Robyn are your
contacts if you have any queries.

volunteers the gardens have been replanted with herbs and
vegetables,thebedshavebeenweededandsomeoftheplantshave
been relocated. The herbs are now located together and the
watering system has also been extended to the north west corner
where the bromeliads have been repositioned.
Our first plantings in early October included board beans, sweet
corn, runner beans and silver beet. Later we have added squash,
zucchini, spinach, rhubarb and 3 different varieties of broad beans;
which are flourishing.
To protect the garden from the possums and rats we have installed
nets and it seems to be working! These nets however, will need to
be placed back into position by members after harvesting any
produce.
The produce from the gardens is available to all members and we
encourage everyone to sample our beautiful harvest. Our gardens

beans and 3 tomatoes each.

let members know when sections of the garden are available to
harvest however, please feel free to pick the herbs anytime.
Just a reminder to all members that the palm Mick and Madge gave
us (located between the 2 rinks at the back of the club) and the 3
lemon trees in pots will need to be watered by hand to ensure they
survive the summer. A watering can is located near the outside sink
for anyone who feels inclined to use it.

Productive Garden Working Bee is a monthly event advertised on
the Team App under Events. We have some gardening tools at the
club but feel free to bring along your gardening gloves and anything
else you think could be useful.
The worm farm is thriving at the moment thanks to regular
donations of food scraps. We have used the worm juice and some
of the castings to fertilise the garden beds which in turn, we hope,
will give us a healthy and plentiful crop.
Just a reminder to anyone donating food scraps to be aware of the
good and bad foods for our worms.

Once again we thank all the contributors to the newsletter. With our professional photographer, Madge, now relocated to
Queensland we rely on members to submit photos from club occasions to the newsletter team. Whilst we have regular
reports from committees and members with specific roles we eagerly accept occasional articles from individual members.
We are aiming for the newsletter to provide interesting reading for long term members, new members, potential members,
visitors and staff. The next newsletter will be published mid February after the Christmas/New Year break.

XL1 Club Charity Day – City of Melbourne Bowls Club
The XLI Club / St Vincent's Hospital Trivia and Bowls Day was held at City of Melbourne Bowls Club on Sunday, October 16th.
It was a very successful day with a number of well know celebrities and personalities and other special guests on hand however numbers
were down slightly due to the Melbourne Marathon and the weather on the day. That being the case, everyone who came along walked
away with a raffle prize, participated in the bowls activities and soaked up the family friendly
fun that had been catered for on the day.

  • 1. NEWSLETTER CITYOFMELBOURNEBOWLSCLUBINC. Flagstaff Gardens, Dudley Street, West Melbourne, 3003 T: 0408 108 420 | E: info@citybowls.net | www.citybowls.com December 2016 From the Bowls Committee With the season well underway, the Bowls Committee has purchased new jacks, Grippo, bowls cloths and spray chalk. We are using the new jacks for pennant and night bowls competitions only. There are some jacks in the cupboard in the hall to be used for the championship games. The new jacks will of course be used for the finals of ourchampionshipgame.Weallseemtobeadequatelyattiredfortheseasonbutifanybowlersneednewtopsplease speak to Jeff Moore or email uniforms@citybowls.net . For the sake of Jeff’s reputation the uniforms will be out of thewomen’schangeareasoon.TheBowlsCommittee, alongwiththeBoardarelookingforasolutiontoourstorage problems. New bowls for the bowls library are being purchased. Please ask Steve Phillips or Grant Banks, our equipmentofficersifyouareinterestedinusingtheBowlsLibrary.Bowlsclothsandspraychalkaswellastheuniform tops, jackets, hatbands and bucket hats can be purchased over the bar. With the help of the Board, we are purchasing a new ramp for our wheelchair bound guests. Message from the Chair Friendsandfamily areoftenpuzzledastowhyIspendsomuchofmytime down at the bowls club. No doubt they have images of Crackerjack in their heads and picture me partaking of endless 'ponies' of beer, hoeing into the cheese wheel and investing my savings in the swear jar. My consistent response is that the bowls club is actually my country town. In the middle of all the hectic craziness of 21st century city life, it's whereIgotorelaxandenjoythecompanyoffriendsfromvastlydifferent walks of life, age groups and backgrounds. It's a place where I share many laughs, a few tears, and have the chance to learn a bit about life from an array of mentors. Like any country town, we have our ups and downs. People move in and out, become more or less involved, and disagree from time to time. But over time our common values, our commitment to the place, and our shared experiences, all bind us together. The club, made up of its people, continues to evolve and grow and it is a delight to be a part of that journey. This newsletter is filled with news and stories about the life of the club. Behind each story is a contributionbyindividuals, committees, teamsandgroups;allvoluntarilycommittingtheirtimetomake this 'town' a place where we all want to spend part of our lives. Even the preparation of the newsletter itself takes time, patience and commitment. All of this activity is a sign of a healthy club. Attendances at Thursday night dinners are up, club championship games are well underway, the productive garden is booming, and we are playing competitive bowls in three different pennant competitions. On a sadder note, our longstanding greenkeeper Darren Walls is gravely ill and our thoughts are with him and his family. We will continue to monitor his progress through this difficult time. Meanwhile, interimarrangementshavebeenputin placeanda majorrenovationof thegrassgreen will still takeplace over the break. Your patience and consideration regarding the green are truly appreciated. So as we enjoy the festive season, let's take stock of how fortunate we are to be part of this 'town'. Take the time to chat with someone you haven't spoken to for a while. Make our guests and barefoot bowlers feel welcome (and please, be patient if they do break rules of etiquette from time to time). Show some appreciation to our wonderful staff who work so hard to keep the place ticking over. On behalf of the entire Board of Management I wish you a joyous festive season and a bright and happy new year. James Lamour-Reid Page 1
  • 2. Thelistsofdutiesforthedutyrinkarenowdisplayedonthescreen.Thanksverymuch,KarenBarker, for introducing the paddle pop sticks for our raffle. It’s working very well and is much less tedious for the duty rink team who had to tear and fold a lot of raffle tickets. Table numbers that reflect the rinks played on have also been purchased, thanks to Lisa and Dick. The Bowls Committee is working on putting the duties of the Team Manager in the Team Manager’s folders. Please note that the Board decreed that it is CoMBC policy that on Saturday Pennant, the scheduled break shall be taken in line with the Bowls Victoria Rules. Premier Division All Premier Division matches irrespective of the day played or starting time will be played straight through with no break taken. All Other Divisions Where matches are scheduled at the normal 1.00 pm Saturday start: A 15 minute break will be taken at 2:45pm, the bell is to be rung at 2:40 pm and no new ends are to be commenced after this time including ends that are made dead. Play is to resume at 3:00pm with all players expected to be back at their rink to re-commence play at thattime.Thepurposeofthis5minutes“periodofgrace”istoallowthosewhohavejustcommenced an end to complete their end and still have a 15 minute break. Bypriormutualarrangement, thescheduledbreakmaybewaived.Ifsidemanagersarenotabletoagree the scheduled break will be taken at the stated time above. This information will be copied and placed in the Team Manager folders. WehavemuchtolookforwardtocomingintoChristmas.TherearethefinalsofourOpen,Women’s and Novice Singles Championships before the Christmas break. The Triples, Mixed Pairs and Pairs Championships finals will be played after the break. Mazda Cup will be back in February. The Moomba Tournament is moving along with both Dick and Jeff wooing sponsorship. So have a happy season break and remember the whole idea is to get your bowls closest to the small yellow (or white) thing. Debra Dowling Novice Championship December 1st Whatanexcitinghighqualitymatch between Roger Scott and Peter Macdonald with Roger being the ultimate victor. From the Selectors We are seven rounds into the 2016/17 pennant season and results are very much a mixed bag. All three teams have had one draw due to inclement weather otherwise Division 3 has a win/loss ratio of 3 and 3 and sits 6th of 10 on the ladder. Division 5 is 2 and 4 and is 9th of 10 on the ladder and Division 7 is 2 and 3 and is 5th of 9 on the ladder and breathing down the necks of Williamstown and Port Melbourne for a spot in the four and a finals berth. This pennant season to date has been no different to others in recent memory in respect of a large number of bowlers being unavailable for pennant week after week. This frustrates the Selectors in their quest to develop settled sides and even keep rinks together. This is just a fact of life however and we are mindful that there is life away from bowls and rightly so. However there is light at the end of the tunnel as it is envisaged that in the very near future we will have a full list of bowlers to select from. This will enable the selectors to remain focused on their objective of consolidating our top two sides in Divisions 3 and 5 for next season. It is acknowledgedthatwhenbowlersinDivision3areunavailable,thenbothDivision5and7suffer with personnel being required to be promoted to higher divisions. In this regard we would like to thank all those members who have answered the call and made themselves available for a game of bowls in Division 7 so that we would not have to forfeit. It goes without saying that Selectors are neither omniscient nor infallible and if anyone has any constructive suggestions or any issues at all relating to bowls, please approach your friendly selector so that these matters can be discussed at the selection table. Don't forget coaching on Tuesday nights because Greg is an approachable coach who knows his stuff and there is no one in this club who couldn't use a tip or two to improve their bowls. Naturally Thursday night is our main practice night so please have a roll if that suits and even stay afterwards to put the nose bag on for a feed at the "members' meal" and perhaps make inroads into our huge stockpile of "150th Birthday wine". Jack Ainsaar Punishment drill for 1 of the team members whose rink failed to score during a Wednesday night game!!!!!! Guess who? And where are the other culprits? Page 2

A set of Aero size 1s and a set of Aero size 2s. The Bowls Committee would like to thank Bowls Australia for its donation. These bowls will go towards helping members new to the sport get into bowls in an affordable manner. We have seen the benefits already with a large number of newer members. We are still floored by the generosity exhibited by Bowls Australia and look forward to using their donation to help promote and grow the membership of the club and introduce new people to the sport of bowls. Thank you Neil. Steve Phillips Gerry O’Dea, better known as GOD, was a member of the City of Melbourne Bowls Club for over thirty years. He is remembered fondly for his detailed stories and his gentle intellect. Gerry joined the Bowls Club in 1986 on the advice of the retiring publican of the Metropolitan Hotel, as the hotel was shutting for renovations. He joined the committee in 1991, becoming Vice Presidentin1995followingthefire,andthenDeputyChairofthenew Board in 2007. During the 13 years of negotiations to build a new clubhouse, Gerry was a vital contributor who met with councillors, planned strategies, wrote letters, attended Council committee meetingsandsupportedCommunityevents.Heretiredin2010after 20 consecutive years on the Board. His first game was a social match. Paul Davis tells the story of Gerry’s first match and has been able to quote Gerry directly. “MyfirstgamewasasocialmixedinwithPrince’sPark, playingsecond opposite Jack Collins, long time bowler and past president of this august club. I couldn’t believe how friendly it was .Everyone introducedthemselvesandontopofthatbecauseitwasmyfirstgame, they gave me a card with everyone’s name on it. I had put the card in my pocket and halfway through the game my team mates asked me thescore.ItoldthemthatJackwaskeepingthescoreandtheywould have to check with him. They were quick to tell me that both sides should keep score. I told them “You will just have to trust Jack but if you want to know any player’s name, I’m your man. I’ve got this card you see....” How did Gerry acquire his nickname? After Bonnie passed, Gerry was not enjoying good health and such was the love and respect we had for Gerry,20membersturnedupto hishome to restoresomeorderto Bonnie’s garden. As the scrutineers were counting the votes, the tension was broken by Gerry taking the microphone. “I can announce that Jaydee Hajianfer has been elected as Treasurer oftheclub.MostofyouwillknowthatJaydeeisanIranianrefugeeand he has been having difficulties in obtaining Australian citizenship. Well Jaydee you should start writing a letter straight away to Phillip Ruddock, Minister for Immigration and tell him that you, Jaydee have been elected UNOPPOSED, no less, as Treasurer of the City of Melbourne Bowls Club.” This put the importance of the bowls club politics into true perspective. Gerry was a part of the team that won the Division 8 section flag in 2005/06. He was also part of the winning mid week pennant team 2013/14 and although unable to play in the finals turned up with food and drinks (VB) for the spectators. He was also able to see both 1st and 2nd teams win the finals to move up a division last season. In2014GerrywastheworthywinnerofCurleyaward,anawardgiven to selfless members of this club. A late night conversation with Gary Dowling before he left resulted in the City of Melbourne Bowls Club (CoMBC) deciding to hold the Oktoberfest function at the bowls club. In no time Kaz Rothwell, Deb Dowling , Zac Potier, Jeff Moore and Gary had all volunteered their services and this small enthusiastic group immediately started planning the event. Club Manager Zac did a great job in organising German Hacker- Pschorr, Hofbräu, Paulaner, and Spaten beers to be on tap, running banners across the room and arranging Oktoberfest t-shirts for the bar staff to wear. And in what was a fantastic coup Zac was also able to arrange a deal whereby all attendees got to keep a glass stein with their first beer purchase. Jeff Moore by virtue of his friendship with club member and very talented musician John Smith was put in change of music. As a result Jeffwasinstrumentalintheclubbeingabletoobtaintheservicesofthe band Annabelle Eve & Creature Comfort who did a great job. We didn’t manage to get a win but it was great experience for both Gary and myself and we got to see Dave put in some great bowls against some class skips. On Tuesday Kaz and I played in the mixed pairs competition and we had a blast, We got beaten in our first game and won our last two to finish on a high. It was so much fun and great for your game to play against better opposition that I would really recommend to everyone to go and play the Vic Open it will only improve you game. Social Membership numbers continue to grow and we would like to welcome the following new Full and Social Members : Tim Knowles, Donna Williams, John Smith (Social Members) Novella Mandanici and Michael Mandanici (Full Members) If any Social Members have not yet paid your 2016/17 Membership Fees you can still do so - Payment of your Membership subscription can be made by: EFT to Westpac BSB 033 340 Account Number 129012; and / or Cheque to postal address PO Box 440 Flemington Vic 3031 If you choose to pay by EFT please ensure that your name is included with the payment details. Page 6 Thursday Club Meals Attendance this year has seen a wonderful improvement on last year and even better than two years ago. We got off to a great start with the selectors headed by Colin and Jack with their tasty pastas and desserts (45 diners). Russell and Maria followed with their rather hot Acapulco chicken (about 37); Rocket and Madeleine (mainly the former) served up a chicken curry and Thai salad (about 33). Lisa and James went into overdrive with their Vietnamese banquet (about 41). Nan and Gay’s succulent lamb shoulders were devoured by a hungry 36. But the all time record was soundly and triumphantly achieved by Bob and Mary from New York, with their Great American Grill: score 51 paying diners plus the chefs: equals 53. All meals have operated at a profit, some by as much as $100, so it will not matter at all if we occasionally go over budget. There are three dinners in December, Lynne and Peter (who opted out and played in the Novice final instead!!!), Grant and his new bride Melissa, and, on the 15th, Tony and Marjorie. We begin the New Year on January 12th with Robyn and Gary (I suspect it will be more Robyn than Gary). What has been especially pleasing is the way members have volunteered to clean up after. Some have been dragooned, but have done so cheerfully. Some, like Irene, Nan and Dean, seem so willing we must be careful not to exploit them so much. Russell King Update from the Manager Our peak time is upon us with December already fully booked. Extra efforts will be made to ensure the members are taken care of, however we do ask for your patience at times during this period. The synthetic green is pretty full during this time so if you did want a bowl on the synthetic please check with the staff to see what is available. Grass green rinks are always available with only the occasional barefoot bowling booking mostly confined to Friday lunch times. When playing championship games it is worth checking availability with the office. We have a new staff member Beth who you may have already met. Please introduce yourself and make her feel welcome. It was terrific to see so many new faces, also, the great effort by everyone dressing up and bringing a plate of food to share. The room was decorated amazingly by Vicky. Looking forward to doing it all again in 2017. Many thanks, Irene Attard The Metro West Bowls Region of which CoMBC is a member club have updated their website - the new website can be located at www.metrowestbowls.bowls.com.au If you are interested in playing tournaments, here are some upcoming events that may be of interest. TheProductiveGardenGrouphasbeenactivesincethestartofthe bowling season and the garden is looking great. Thanks to our volunteers the gardens have been replanted with herbs and vegetables, thebedshavebeenweededandsomeoftheplantshave been relocated. The herbs are now located together and the watering system has also been extended to the north west corner where the bromeliads have been repositioned. Our first plantings in early October included board beans, sweet corn, runner beans and silver beet. Later we have added squash, zucchini, spinach, rhubarb and 3 different varieties of broad beans; which are flourishing. To protect the garden from the possums and rats we have installed nets and it seems to be working! These nets however, will need to be placed back into position by members after harvesting any produce. The produce from the gardens is available to all members and we encourage everyone to sample our beautiful harvest. Our gardens arenotproducingonalargescalesopleasejusttakeasmallamount each time so that everyone can benefit from the yield ie. 6 broad beans and 3 tomatoes each. Weaskthatsecateursbeusedtocutthebroadbeansandthesewill be provided once the produce is ripe. The Garden Group will also let members know when sections of the garden are available to harvest however, please feel free to pick the herbs anytime. Just a reminder to all members that the palm Mick and Madge gave us (located between the 2 rinks at the back of the club) and the 3 lemon trees in pots will need to be watered by hand to ensure they survive the summer. A watering can is located near the outside sink for anyone who feels inclined to use it. Wewelcomeallmembersoftheclubtoparticipateinthegardening activities. The more the merrier we say and the next scheduled working bee is on Saturday 17 December from 10 – 11am. The Productive Garden Working Bee is a monthly event advertised on the Team App under Events. We have some gardening tools at the club but feel free to bring along your gardening gloves and anything else you think could be useful. The worm farm is thriving at the moment thanks to regular donations of food scraps. We have used the worm juice and some of the castings to fertilise the garden beds which in turn, we hope, will give us a healthy and plentiful crop. Just a reminder to anyone donating food scraps to be aware of the good and bad foods for our worms. Worms Eat: Please don’t forget the worm towers in the garden bed when distributing the food scraps. “THAT’S YOUR BLOOMING LOT” Karen Barker (Productive Garden Group) • Raw and cooked vegetable scraps ie. potato and pumpkin skins, lettuces and broccoli • Tea bags • Coffee grinds Worms Do Not Eat • Meat – attracts vermin and flies • Dairy products – attracts vermin and flies • Citrus • Bread • Onions, garlic, capsicumorchilli (anything from the onion family) CoMBC Garden Update Newsletter Team Once again we thank all the contributors to the newsletter. With our professional photographer, Madge, now relocated to Queensland we rely on members to submit photos from club occasions to the newsletter team. Whilst we have regular reports from committees and members with specific roles we eagerly accept occasional articles from individual members. We are aiming for the newsletter to provide interesting reading for long term members, new members, potential members, visitors and staff. The next newsletter will be published mid February after the Christmas/New Year break. • 8. XL1 Club Charity Day – City of Melbourne Bowls Club The XLI Club / St Vincent's Hospital Trivia and Bowls Day was held at City of Melbourne Bowls Club on Sunday, October 16th. It was a very successful day with a number of well know celebrities and personalities and other special guests on hand however numbers were down slightly due to the Melbourne Marathon and the weather on the day. That being the case, everyone who came along walked away with a raffle prize, participated in the bowls activities and soaked up the family friendly fun that had been catered for on the day. Allproceedsmadeontheday(approx$3000)havegonetowardsBioFab3D@whichinthe future will assist in rebuilding joints and limbs damaged through cancer or trauma. A lot of work went on behind the scenes to ensure this was another great day and I would like to thank the City of Melbourne Bowls Club, Zac Potier, Gary Dowling and Cameron and Shaun for their assistance in ensuring a great day was had by all. assisting throughout, thank you very much.
