President’s Report
DAVID PREST, President
Captain’s Corner
JAY SNYDER, Men’s Captain
We are just starting into May but it feels like the season started 3 months ago. The weather,
of course, has been extraordinary since January and in response, the course and the
clubhouse have seen much more activity than usual for this time of year.
Tennis is into full swing and on the golf side the Ladies’ and Men’s Openings marked an
excellent start to the season.
The course is in tremendous shape and following aeration our greens superintendent fully expects that it will be
in exceptional form for 2015.
The new halfway house was completed on budget and on time and is now fully operational. The positive
comments from members and staff support a conclusion that the halfway house will be a very complementary
addition to our outstanding food and beverage services. I have no doubt that the staff and the members will find
the new building and the range of menu options to be a welcome change from the old operation.
Overall, the course and grounds, management, food and beverage, golf and tennis staff have set the stage for an
incredible Shaughnessy Experience for 2015 and they are to be congratulated for their enthusiasm and efforts
that have made this possible. The compliments from members continue to flow - it is an excellent team
providing excellent results.
Have a great 2015 season!
David Prest
President
for those members populating the short game area allowed team Snyder’s side to take home the victory by just a
point. Thanks for lunch fellas!
Our early season member guest event; The Cold Duck, might be in need of a name change after back to back
years of sunny skies and summer conditions. This event is a terrific opportunity to showcase the year round
playability of Shaughnessy and also the “Shaughnessy experience” that we have come to expect.
Finally, Men’s opening day capped off our busy April as a full field enjoyed great weather and an impressive
spread. The winning team seemed to be playing a different golf course than the rest of us with a score that
Jordan Speith would have admired.
A special thanks to Rob, Alan, Natasha, Ian, and all of the staff for providing a truly special experience at every
level for each event.
With three events under our belt, it’s safe to say the season is off to a great start. The course
has been in tremendous shape through the early spring with most weekends providing
sunshine and smooth greens.
The Men’s season began with the rejuvenated Showdown or Cap’n vs Vice cap’n. A keen eye
We tried a new “pick-a-pro” event on Master’s weekend this year which paired a Shaughnessy member’s score with
a PGA player’s score from Sunday. We plan on doing this for all the majors this year so plan on playing the
Saturday of major weekends if you would like to participate.
Pace of play was the one area of our events where there is definitely room to improve. Full fields mean there are a
lot of people on the golf course. We try to format the competitions in order to keep things moving. If you’re out
of the hole, pick up and move along. Our starter, Dave, has returned after a one year hiatus and he will be diligent,
and perhaps obnoxious, ensuring you are in the right position. Please try to keep up with the group in front of
you, not ahead of the group behind you.
Our upcoming events include the Senior Men’s Opening May 7th
, Gold Cup and Club Championship qualifying
May 30th
and 31st
, and Point Grey Interclub at Shaughnessy June 11th
. Gold Cup is a great weekend of
competition and isn’t reserved for low handicappers. The course will again be set up in an accommodating
fashion for Saturday’s round so please come out and compete!
Men’s nights officially start on May 6th
and Chris Walwyn and Gord Chan have an impressive list of sponsors lined
up. I have no doubt they will be raising the bar again this year on what is already a fantastic night of golf, food,
and prizes. Come out early and often to start accumulating points for the season long Race-to-Roundup. This
year will be extremely competitive as the top three point getters receive paid entry into the final men’s night AND
round up.
Sincerely,
Jay Snyder

Jerome’s Tennis Tips
“The overhead smash”
1.	Footwork
2.	Attitude
3.	Adjustments
1. The lob is a very popular shot; one of the main reasons is because of the common weak footwork for the
overhead. Never face the net when backing up for the shot, always turn sideways. The intermediate player will
use side shuffle steps to get back to cover the lob where the advanced player will opt to use crossover side steps
which are faster but require better balance.
2. Have the right attitude, be aggressive! The goal of your overhead smash is to end the point. If you are too safe
and hit it too softly, your opponent will continue to lob you. If you lack confidence with your stroke, add some
spin to it to decrease your margin of error and/or come out and practice it to build that confidence.
3. After a few games, you will have a pretty good idea if your opponent is a lobber or not. If he/she is, then don’t
rush too close to the net. Let them know by staying a little bit further back, that you are anticipating the lob.
This might force them to change their mind or hit a better lob that might go out!
Game, Set, Match.

Fore the Women
MARGO DOBBIN-STINSON, Women’s Captain
Your Executive, Golf Committee and Organizers of Special Events have worked hard through
the winter months to plan and organize the very busy schedule of events for this season. We
encourage you to attend as many as you can. Increasing participation in Tuesday’s golf,
whether competitive or casual, remains our goal, so please join us.
Opening Day, March 31st
was a great success with 57 ladies joining us for golf and lunch. We played nine holes
under beautiful, sunny skies with lots of casual water on the course to remind us of the rainy week that came
before.
At our Annual Spring Meeting, I presented the changes coming up this season. For those not able to attend,
here's what you can expect:
✓ For a number of years there has been a mixture of maximum handicaps for different events. As the
BCGA has set 40 as the maximum handicap, we have adopted this for our Medal Pin and competitive events.
✓ Last year we tried Days Derby as a one-day event. It met with mixed reviews so this year we’re going back
to a qualifier on Sept 1st
and the event Sept 8th
. We’d like to extend a special invitation to our casual golfers to be
our ponies this year.
✓ Judy Rollick has decided to retire the Rollick Wallace Cup. We thank her for all the time and effort she
put into organizing this event for many years. Her contributions to the ladies golf at Shaughnessy will always be
remembered.
✓ Last year the Rollick Wallace was combined with the Friendship Cup. That Cup remains and is always a
great, fun event that gives us a chance to show off our course and club to our non-member friends.
✓ This year a special emphasis is being put on the Cookie 2-Ball. It’s the 65th anniversary of this event and
we’re very excited about what the week will hold. See the bulletin board in the locker room for all the details of
this fun week. Mimi Cooke is chairing the Special Events Committee and will answer any questions you may
have.
✓ This is the first year for our green/red combo tees. The new score cards are available in the pro shop and
indicate which red tees to use. This year we will use the combo tees for Medal Pin and Club Championship.
✓ There are a number of changes to this years team. Join us for the Team Lunch and Seminar on April 30th
to hear all about them.
✓ Last fall a vote was taken among the women to make changes to the Championship Week. The changes to
be implemented this year are:
o The qualifying round will be a one-day event only held on Tuesday of the Championship Week.
o The Senior’s Championship will remain with the Club Championship qualifying round on Tuesday.
o All rounds will be played off the combo tees.
o The Championship week will be reduced to 3 days – Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with Match Play
Thursday and Friday and Par Points on Friday.
o In order to play in the matches you must play in the qualifying round on Tuesday.
o The first Championship Flight will consist of the eight lowest gross scores from the Qualifying Round on
Tuesday. The remaining flights will be determined by handicap, which will be frozen Saturday prior to
Championship Week.
Don't forget to signup for our upcoming events. You can find
the list online in the club's calendar or on the bulletin board
in the locker room and you can signup online, in the locker
room or through the pro shop.
Look forward to seeing you on the course.

easy to co-ordinate and fun to wear.

ANNOUNCEMENT
“Gordon Timbers named Head Teaching Professional”
It is with excitement that I announce to the entire membership that Gordon Timbers has been appointed Head
Teaching Professional at Shaughnessy G&CC.
Gordon is originally from Haliburton, Ontario (30 minutes East of Muskoka.) Having attended Brock
University and the Professional Golf Management Program at Georgian College, Gordon obtained his Class “A”
Status within the PGA of Canada in 2012.
Gordon has held various positions at some of North America’s great facilities. Gordon began his career at the
Delta Pinestone Resort (Haliburton, ON,) before joining the Professional Staff at Beacon Hall GC (Aurora, ON,)
Georgian Bay Club (Collingwood, ON,) The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge GC (Jasper, AB) and Olde Florida GC
(Naples, FL.)
Gordon is entering his 3rd season at Shaughnessy, and is a Class “A” member of the PGA of Canada. In addition
to his PGA credentials, other certifications include: level 2 Trackman Instructor, Titleist Performance Institute
(TPI) Level 1 and he has recently become Aim Point certified.
Having been a past nominee and finalist for the PGA of Alberta – TEACHER OF THE YEAR (2012), we feel
that Gordon will excel in his new role and benefit the members, by having a full time instructor on property.
In addition to instruction, Gordon will also oversee the Golf Academy and work closely with Bernard and his
team in order to make sure our world class practice facilities are maintained.
Please help me in congratulating Gordon on his well-deserved appointment.

  • 2. President’s Report DAVID PREST, President Captain’s Corner JAY SNYDER, Men’s Captain We are just starting into May but it feels like the season started 3 months ago. The weather, of course, has been extraordinary since January and in response, the course and the clubhouse have seen much more activity than usual for this time of year. Tennis is into full swing and on the golf side the Ladies’ and Men’s Openings marked an excellent start to the season. The course is in tremendous shape and following aeration our greens superintendent fully expects that it will be in exceptional form for 2015. The new halfway house was completed on budget and on time and is now fully operational. The positive comments from members and staff support a conclusion that the halfway house will be a very complementary addition to our outstanding food and beverage services. I have no doubt that the staff and the members will find the new building and the range of menu options to be a welcome change from the old operation. Overall, the course and grounds, management, food and beverage, golf and tennis staff have set the stage for an incredible Shaughnessy Experience for 2015 and they are to be congratulated for their enthusiasm and efforts that have made this possible. The compliments from members continue to flow - it is an excellent team providing excellent results. Have a great 2015 season! David Prest President for those members populating the short game area allowed team Snyder’s side to take home the victory by just a point. Thanks for lunch fellas! Our early season member guest event; The Cold Duck, might be in need of a name change after back to back years of sunny skies and summer conditions. This event is a terrific opportunity to showcase the year round playability of Shaughnessy and also the “Shaughnessy experience” that we have come to expect. Finally, Men’s opening day capped off our busy April as a full field enjoyed great weather and an impressive spread. The winning team seemed to be playing a different golf course than the rest of us with a score that Jordan Speith would have admired. A special thanks to Rob, Alan, Natasha, Ian, and all of the staff for providing a truly special experience at every level for each event. With three events under our belt, it’s safe to say the season is off to a great start. The course has been in tremendous shape through the early spring with most weekends providing sunshine and smooth greens. The Men’s season began with the rejuvenated Showdown or Cap’n vs Vice cap’n. A keen eye
  • 3. We tried a new “pick-a-pro” event on Master’s weekend this year which paired a Shaughnessy member’s score with a PGA player’s score from Sunday. We plan on doing this for all the majors this year so plan on playing the Saturday of major weekends if you would like to participate. Pace of play was the one area of our events where there is definitely room to improve. Full fields mean there are a lot of people on the golf course. We try to format the competitions in order to keep things moving. If you’re out of the hole, pick up and move along. Our starter, Dave, has returned after a one year hiatus and he will be diligent, and perhaps obnoxious, ensuring you are in the right position. Please try to keep up with the group in front of you, not ahead of the group behind you. Our upcoming events include the Senior Men’s Opening May 7th , Gold Cup and Club Championship qualifying May 30th and 31st , and Point Grey Interclub at Shaughnessy June 11th . Gold Cup is a great weekend of competition and isn’t reserved for low handicappers. The course will again be set up in an accommodating fashion for Saturday’s round so please come out and compete! Men’s nights officially start on May 6th and Chris Walwyn and Gord Chan have an impressive list of sponsors lined up. I have no doubt they will be raising the bar again this year on what is already a fantastic night of golf, food, and prizes. Come out early and often to start accumulating points for the season long Race-to-Roundup. This year will be extremely competitive as the top three point getters receive paid entry into the final men’s night AND round up. Sincerely, Jay Snyder Mens Captain Tennis News JEROME FOURNIER, Director of Tennis ONE DAY MIXED DOUBLES TOURNAMENT - Saturday, May 23rd , 2015, 9:00am - 3:00pm followed by an outdoor barbecue. • 4. Jerome’s Tennis Tips “The overhead smash” 1. Footwork 2. Attitude 3. Adjustments 1. The lob is a very popular shot; one of the main reasons is because of the common weak footwork for the overhead. Never face the net when backing up for the shot, always turn sideways. The intermediate player will use side shuffle steps to get back to cover the lob where the advanced player will opt to use crossover side steps which are faster but require better balance. 2. Have the right attitude, be aggressive! The goal of your overhead smash is to end the point. If you are too safe and hit it too softly, your opponent will continue to lob you. If you lack confidence with your stroke, add some spin to it to decrease your margin of error and/or come out and practice it to build that confidence. 3. After a few games, you will have a pretty good idea if your opponent is a lobber or not. If he/she is, then don’t rush too close to the net. Let them know by staying a little bit further back, that you are anticipating the lob. This might force them to change their mind or hit a better lob that might go out! Game, Set, Match. • 5. Fore the Women MARGO DOBBIN-STINSON, Women’s Captain Your Executive, Golf Committee and Organizers of Special Events have worked hard through the winter months to plan and organize the very busy schedule of events for this season. We encourage you to attend as many as you can. Increasing participation in Tuesday’s golf, whether competitive or casual, remains our goal, so please join us. Opening Day, March 31st was a great success with 57 ladies joining us for golf and lunch. We played nine holes under beautiful, sunny skies with lots of casual water on the course to remind us of the rainy week that came before. At our Annual Spring Meeting, I presented the changes coming up this season. For those not able to attend, here's what you can expect: ✓ For a number of years there has been a mixture of maximum handicaps for different events. As the BCGA has set 40 as the maximum handicap, we have adopted this for our Medal Pin and competitive events. ✓ Last year we tried Days Derby as a one-day event. It met with mixed reviews so this year we’re going back to a qualifier on Sept 1st and the event Sept 8th . We’d like to extend a special invitation to our casual golfers to be our ponies this year. ✓ Judy Rollick has decided to retire the Rollick Wallace Cup. We thank her for all the time and effort she put into organizing this event for many years. Her contributions to the ladies golf at Shaughnessy will always be remembered. ✓ Last year the Rollick Wallace was combined with the Friendship Cup. That Cup remains and is always a great, fun event that gives us a chance to show off our course and club to our non-member friends. ✓ This year a special emphasis is being put on the Cookie 2-Ball. It’s the 65th anniversary of this event and we’re very excited about what the week will hold. See the bulletin board in the locker room for all the details of this fun week. Mimi Cooke is chairing the Special Events Committee and will answer any questions you may have. ✓ This is the first year for our green/red combo tees. The new score cards are available in the pro shop and indicate which red tees to use. This year we will use the combo tees for Medal Pin and Club Championship. ✓ There are a number of changes to this years team. Join us for the Team Lunch and Seminar on April 30th to hear all about them. ✓ Last fall a vote was taken among the women to make changes to the Championship Week. The changes to be implemented this year are: o The qualifying round will be a one-day event only held on Tuesday of the Championship Week. o The Senior’s Championship will remain with the Club Championship qualifying round on Tuesday. o All rounds will be played off the combo tees. o The Championship week will be reduced to 3 days – Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with Match Play Thursday and Friday and Par Points on Friday. o In order to play in the matches you must play in the qualifying round on Tuesday. o The first Championship Flight will consist of the eight lowest gross scores from the Qualifying Round on Tuesday. The remaining flights will be determined by handicap, which will be frozen Saturday prior to Championship Week. Don't forget to signup for our upcoming events. You can find the list online in the club's calendar or on the bulletin board in the locker room and you can signup online, in the locker room or through the pro shop. Look forward to seeing you on the course. Margo Dobbin-Stinson Ladies Captain
  • 6.
