In Memoriam - Julia Wendy Ruck (Julie)
I am pleased to be given the opportunity to sponsor today’s Toolstation Western
League Division One match against Hengrove Athletic Football Club with whom
I have developed a strong association over the years, particularly so during my
years as Secretary of Cheddar Football Club. Unfortunately it transpires neither
Hengrove Athletic Chairman Mike Greatbanks or Secretary Martin McConachie are
able to join us this afternoon but my thanks to them both for their kind wishes.
I have asked specifically to sponsor today’s match in memory of my late sister
Julie, who passed away some three weeks ago following a brief battle against
cancer.
Julie was an accomplished sportswoman in Dover in Kent, when she and I were
young and did particularly well on the athletics field, particularly sprint running, and
on the tennis court, winning many competitions. Julie was also Head Girl at Dover
Girls Grammar School and was also an amazing cook!
Being my older sister she would always encourage me in my sporting pursuits, and
also with my interest in sports writing dating back to my school days; and something
must have clicked as during my Army service I was elevated to the position of the
Army and Combined Services Assistant Manager following a highly successful
period managing the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst team.
Julie and her husband George were honoured to become the Mayor and Mayoress
of Dover in 1975 to 1976. She was a very popular person with strong principles and
a highly accomplished teacher, and a great and singer too.
There is absolutely no doubt that Julie will be sorely missed by her husband
George, and children Martin and Elizabeth, and their families. As well as by
her many friends and other family members.
My thanks to Cheddar Football Club Chairman Matt Postins and the Cheddar
committee, Manager Craig Mawford and all playing staff for their support in recent
weeks during Julie’s illness.
Lastly I have made a donation to the Lymphoma Research Fund c/o W J Farrier &
Sons Ltd, 161 London Road, Dover CT17 0TG. Should anyone attending today
wish to make any donation, this would of course be hugely appreciated.
RIP Julie!
With my very best regards, Alan Cooper.

9. The following season, the club finished ninth in the table,
their highest position ever, and also the highest placed
Bristol team at this level, before being relegated in the
2018/19 season.
Hengrove Athletic FC
Hengrove Athletic was formed in 1948 by a local verger who, as a keen footballer, was aware that
a number ex Hengrove United players were about to be demobbed.
A successful application was made to join the Bristol and Suburban League and they were placed
in Division 3 for the start of 1948/49 season. The club continued to expand and by fielding four
teams became the largest club in the Bristol and Suburban League during the late 1950's.
The first XI was accepted by the Somerset Senior League for the 1974/75 season, where they
remained until 2005/06 when they were runaway, unbeaten, Premier Division champions and
joined the Western League for the start of the 2006/07 season.
The first XI finished runners-up in Western League Division One in 2012/13, achieving promotion
to the Premier Division for the first time. They then lifted the Les Phillips League Cup in 2015/16
before winning promotion to the Premier Division again in 2016/17.
History of the Clubs
Cheddar FC
Cheddar Football Club was established in 1892, playing at the local cricket ground near the then
Cheddar railway station on the Strawberry Line. The Cheddar Valley League, of which the
Cheesemen were one of the founders, was formed in the 1900’s. A couple of years after winning
the league in 1911, the club joined the Western & District League and moved to a new ground
where the Kings of Wessex Academy playing fields are now situated.
A historic £1500 investment in 1952 allowed the club to relocate to the current ground, Bowdens
Park, after re-joining the Cheddar Valley League shortly after the Second World War.
The ‘shack’, as it was affectionately known opened in 1981 as a licensed facility providing the
foundation for future Somerset County League success, and was converted into the current
clubhouse in 1987.
To coincide with the centenary year in 1992, the club built new
changing rooms and installed flood lights, allowing evening matches to
be hosted.
Cheddar FC then advanced to Somerset County League Premier
Division in 2004 and in 2011 achieved promotion to the Western
League Division 1 for the first time in its history, finishing in third place
in 2016/17, fourth place in 2017/18 and second place in 2018/19, just
missing out on promotion to the Western League Premier Division.
