2. The Process of Sketching an Eiffel Tower
When I was kid, there is a building that makes me fall in love with
architecture, which is Eiffel Tower. Eiffel Tower is one of the beloved
landmarks in the world. It is an iron lattice tower that situated in Paris. Its
complex construction make it to become a global cultural icon of France and
the most recognizable structure in the world. In this modern era, there are
thousand photos and images of Eiffel Tower that we can download, save and
refer from websites, books and magazines. Instead of just download the
images from website, how can we possess the precious and only image of our
favorites’. Undeniable, sketch is one of the best methods to produce our own
drawings. There are some steps that I did in sketching Eiffel Tower.
Before we start, there are some preparations for the sketch. Basically, I
will just prepare some pencils, a sketchbook, an eraser and an electronic
eraser. Perhaps you will ask me about the kind of pencils I use in sketching.
There are different kinds of pencils with different grade of hardness. For
instance, the softest pencil is “9B” which only use in blackens some particular
areas in your drawings. On the other hand, the hardest pencil is “9H” which
normally use to draw on something hard such as the wall. For me, I will
choose to use pencil “H” for drafting and “2B’ for highlighting and blackening
the outlines and details. Besides that, there is also a part that you need to
consider with before you start to draw, that is “Perspective”. In my case, front
view perspective is more suitable for sketching a tower. Now, let’s get started
on this interesting sketch.
3. First of all, you need to draw a big isosceles triangle in the middle of
your sketchbook in order to make sure your tower will not out of the fixed
shape after a few steps of sketching. Draw a vertical straight line to divide the
triangle into a half. Then, draw three sets of horizontal line to form three
rectangles in the big triangle to form the three levels of Eiffel Tower from the
bottom to the top. There is just a short and small rectangle a bit below the tip
of the triangle. In the half way down the triangle, there is a wider rectangle
and again half way from that, is a longer rectangle. After that, draw a small
arch at the top of the triangle that is on the first small rectangle. Now, you can
draw three sets of slightly angled lines to fix the shape of the tower. Then, a
set of short vertical lines can be added to both of the lower rectangle to form
two tiers of the tower. Draw the second line beside the angled lines. At the
bottom of the tower, draw a half circle with double line. So, there is a base of
the tower. Next, draw a V-shaped line from the middle part of the tower to the
top with double lines. Therefore, the basic shape of the Eiffel Tower is formed.
So here we come to the detail part of our sketching. Continue to our
sketching, draw a vertical line in the second rectangle and draw a horizontal
line on and below the second rectangle. After that, connect the two lines with
the rectangle and the body of the tower. The same step is also will be done on
the lowest rectangle. Finally, the sketch almost comes to an end. In the
middle part of the tower, draw two slightly vertical bent lines to divide both part
of its body. Then, draw many sets of double horizontal lines for the supports
of tower. Meanwhile, you also can draw a series of ‘X’ in between the
columns. The sizes of the ‘X’ are very depending on where you put them in
your tower. I will start with the smallest ones in the first part of tower and
4. increase their size to the base of the tower. After that, you should add some
double bent lines to the curve at the bottom of the tower and to the area
above it. After you have done all these parts, you can erase the big isosceles
triangle outline, which you have drawn at first. I will also blacken the outlines
of the tower and some detail with 2B pencil. It helps to emphasize the shape
of the tower and make it seems like a solid and concrete structure.
In a nutshell, sketching is not an easy task but if you are willing to
spend time on it and try it, you will find it is an interesting task or even might
become your hobby. After doing the sketch on Eiffel Tower, I gained a lot of
useful knowledge especially on drawing skills. So, from now on, don’t you just
rely on Internet, let’s create something new by your hands!
