This document discusses motivation and learning. It defines key terms like intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Students share stories about experiences they were motivated to learn. They define motivation terms with partners. The document discusses Daniel Pink's ideas that intrinsic motivation and autonomy are more important than extrinsic rewards. Students take a self-motivation quiz and reflect on how motivation applies to their own learning. They will set goals to improve self-motivation and monitor progress throughout the semester.
2. Object and Purpose of the Lesson
Responsibility for learning resides in the learner
Understanding how you learn helps you to maximize learning
experiences
Individuals who understand how they are motivated can apply that
knowledge to understand their current and future learning
experiences.
3. Motivation to learn
Think about something you learned because you wanted to
learn more, e.g. play a video game, drive a car, make good
enchiladas, etc. (Remember that this is a G-rated show).
You have 1 minute to think and write down a response.
4. Write about the learning experience
Name the experience. What was your purpose for learning? What
was your goal? Why did you want to learn? How did you learn?
Was it easy or hard or both? How did you feel when you
accomplished your goal. What was your reward?
Listen to my story as an example.
9. Write for 2 min. about your learning
experience
Name the experience. What was your purpose for learning?
What was your goal? Why did you want to learn? How did you
learn? Was it easy or hard or both? How did you feel when you
accomplished your goal. What was your reward?
10. Share your story with a partner.
Name the following parts in your stories and write a definition with
your partner. If you need to look up a word, you may do so, but don’t
copy the definition. Write your own definition with your partner. Copy
the graphic organizer below and fill it in.

11. Daniel Pink. Drive
As you view the RSAnimate summary of Daniel Pink’s ideas on
motivation, think about how the ideas of purpose, autonomy,
mastery, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation apply to you
and your learning experiences in school.

You may clarify your definitions on the graphic organizer as you
view the video.
12. Your Motivation for Learning in School
Identify your own learning style as it applies to academics and school.
You will hand this in to me so that I can get to know you better. Be sure
your name is on your paper. Use the following questions to write your
paragraph. Use complete sentences.
How do you master new knowledge?
How do you handle independence (autonomy) in school?
What extrinsic rewards motivate you?
What intrinsic rewards motivate you?
13. Develop Intrinsic motivation
Which would Daniel Pink value more: intrinsic or extrinsic
motivation? How does he try to convince you of his argument?
Are grades intrinsic or extrinsic? (discuss with your partner)
How self-motivated are you? Click on the link or enter the url into
your browser and take the Self-motivation quiz. Have school in
mind when responding to the items in the quiz.

Write your score on the paper you are handing in.
14. How we will use this information in the
future.
We will continue to explore some information on the website
with the self-motivation quiz. By the end of the week, you will
write goals for yourself regarding building self-motivation for
learning in school. School is your job for now and you won’t
advance in your job without goals and self-motivation.
We will continue to learn about how you learn throughout the
semester and you will monitor your progress on your goals.
Pass your Motivation for Learning in School narrative to the
front of the room.
Editor's Notes
30 years ago my husband and I built a log home in NM where we were teaching on near the Navajo Reservation. We actually built it.
. We rented it for several years after moving to CA, but in the last couple of years, we decided to keep it for ourselves. Each July, I have a bit of a project to do. My purpose was to learn to lay tile so that I didn’t have to pay someone else to do it. My goal was to get rid of the nasty 25-year-old carpet in the bathroom. I watched Youtube videos and googled for do-it-yourself tile laying. I found a groutible vinyl tile project.
It took longer than I thought and a lot more preparation work. We had to re-level the floor, roll on some sealer for better adhesion and then lower the baseboard because the vinyl isn’t as thick as the carpet.
Then, we had to repaint . I didn’t want to repaint the whole thing, so I did half way up and put in a chair rail. When I was done, I felt pretty good. It looks good and I learned how to do something I hadn’t done before. I have actually laid carpet and put in a wood floor, but this was different.
10 min.
5 min. Ask clarifying questions related to my own story, e.g. What was my purpose for learning to lay tile? What was my goal? Why did I want to learn? How did I learn? Was it easy or hard or both? How did I feel when I was finished? What was my reward?
