2. Program background
• Industry and Seafood Training Tasmania acknowledged long term
skills gaps and management development needs
• Diploma-level training supported by networking with other farm
managers the desired solution
• Industry could not afford indirect costs of managers’ time off the job
plus direct training costs, so no post- Cert IV training seriously
considered let alone delivered
• No available funding or delivery model to meet demand for
management level, rather than farm attendant, training
3. Funding to the rescue!
• Agrifood Australia informed Seafood Training Tasmania that the
DEEWR funded EBPPP program could support management level
training for the Tasmanian seafood industry.
• The idea of using EBPPP funding for a Diploma of Seafood Industry
(Aquaculture) for Tasmanian oyster farm managers was crystallised.
4. • Because a successful program depends on industry ownership, and
ownership can only be achieved through consultation.
• Consultation occurred through a state-wide tour visiting all
enterprises that had expressed interest in a farm manager
development program.
• Aims of visits were to:
- inform about opportunities
- define program objectives
- map out a program including content, units and mode of
delivery that could meet personal, company and sector needs
Consult, consult, consult….
