1. How have you used media
language in your music video?
2. Mise en Scene - Location
Within my music video I used an overall of 3 locations with shots within
different parts of those locations. I used 2 different parks (Earlham and
Henderson) I used these locations as they were easy to access as well
as they had potential for a lot of interesting shots and sections of the
video. These urban and somewhat rundown areas are very common
within the indie rock genre as they show the attempt of being different
and unique and going against the norm.
3. The Maze
This location of the maze appears throughout the video and is a place in
which the couple have always had happy memories. This location gives
connotations of a problem needing to be overcome due to the idea of a
maze. This links to the couples relationship and how much sacrifice comes
with it.
4. The House
The shots within the house differ between memory and real time. I felt like
showing this within the video was very important. By using the house as a
predominant area in the video I broke the connotations of what a house usually
represents (warm, happy) and instead made it cold and angry. I did this through
colour mostly, for example, within the last gif I colour corrected the shot to make
it seem more cold and emphasised the monochromatic colours within the
furniture and walls.
6. Camerawork
Throughout my video I tried to use a variant amount of different camera angles that are commonly used within
the indie rock genre. I used close ups, medium shots, long shots, pans, over the shoulder, tracking, zooming. As
well as this throughout I used hand held camera as well as using the tripod to do steadicam.
This shot type is a mid shot pan and then moving into a close up. I used this to
establish character. I also used it to ensure the audience would be able to understand
the character and give an idea to the audience about his personality. (Hair flip – self-
centred)
At the beginning of this shot I chose to slightly zoom in on the couple and used the
rule of linear thirds to make the shot look more interesting. I chose to put the couple
on the far right and allow the rest of the space to be dominated by the setting as it
allowed the female character to blend in and the male to stand out. This showing his
separation to the world because of his actions.
7. Editing and Sound
The editing within my video was very simple so I was able to fit it within the
indie rock genre. I was able to edit in a non-linear way and therefore was
able to move my clips around and edit at any point within the song I wanted.
I used a cross dissolve to show the isolation of the male character as within
the cross dissolve the female character disappears. It also shows the male
characters understanding of his negative effects on the female character. I
also ensured I used the 180 degree rule throughout the video to not confuse
the audience as to where within the setting they are.
I used diegetic and non-diegetic sound throughout also. The non-diegetic
being the song and the diegetic being the door slamming between 1:31 and
1:33.
