LinkedIn and other social media sites have become important for job seekers, but
they present different challenges than cover letters and résumés. Cover letters
and résumés can be tailored to individual jobs, but your professional summary on
LinkedIn can’t.
However, it is important to have a good professional summary, as this can help
you make connections with people for whom you may eventually produce
targeted application materials. (LinkedIn and other social media sites also let
you gather information about particular companies, positions, hiring personnel,
or managers that can help you write targeted cover letters and résumés.)
