3. Achievement goal theory (Duda and Roberts, 1993) Duda and Roberts believe that the performers level of motivation will differ and is dependent on the reasons for their participation, the goals set and the relative meanings of those goals. The performer may be set different types of achievement goals. What do you understand by: Outcome goal ·end result is set to judge and compare the performance of the athlete compared to others, e.g. the time taken to complete a race Task-orientated goal ·used to judge the performance of the athlete against their own standards, e.g. how close is the time to their PB?

Plenary: Development of approach behaviour If the aim of NGBs is to develop athletes who possess a high level of achievement motivation with a high motive to succeed and approach behaviour what strategies could coaches use to fulfil this aim? ·provide positive childhood experiences, encouraging positive feelings of pride and satisfaction through success ·reduce punishment and negative feelings ·gradually increase task difficulty, still ensuring that challenging tasks are set ·cater for all levels of ability ·raise levels of self efficacy an avoid learned helplessness ·set appropriate outcome or task oriented goals ·consider cultural differences ·use attributions correctly ·provide encouragement from significant others Strategies

This week's homework is to go back to the beginning of the chapter and: ·Make a glossary of all Key Terms. Add one of these to the VLE glossary, using your own words ·Make careful notes on all aspects of the chapter - you may be tested on this ·Complete all tasks not yet set (you might have to do some of them alone rather than in pairs) ·Read all Apply It sections and write up an Apply It for your own performance/sport ·Make a careful note of all Exam Tips, these could gain you a whole grade ·Write a mark scheme for and then answer the Revise As You Go questions Remember: these are tasks you should be doing every day. You cannot do this at the last minute, next May.
