Integrate Counseling
Why People behave the way the Do
That question is ask every day when you see someone acting out of character the first thing someone
say why are they acting that way. Well, I have come to the concluding of some of it is learned and
some of it is a mental disorder, and, also a person sometimes doesn't know how– to express their
self. So, a person will act unapproachable or have a misconduct just because they don't know how to
express their self or get their point across. In life, it is very important to be aware of your action as
your grow into an adult you should want to be able to function in a healthy lifestyle for work or
social environment where you will be able to handle different situation or problem that you face in

and find ways to overcome the diversity in a proper manner. What I have gained

The Counseling Relationship Analysis
List and describe the stages of the counseling relationship as presented by the author of the
textbook. The Counseling Relationship consist of six stages: Rapport and Trust Building, Problem
Identification, Deepening Understanding and Goal Setting, Work, Closure, and Post Interview.
During Stage 1, Rapport and Trust Building, the counselor works on developing a comfortable and
trusting relationship with the use of good social skills, listening skills, empathy, and culture
sensitivity. Without loosing focus of the main purpose of the session (assisting the client with their
self identified problem), both the client and counselor will find common interest in an effort to build
their relationship with one another. The counselor mentally identifies issues the clients bring up, all
while eventfully reviewing with the client the accuracy of that list. The counselor will want to
ensure a safe environment and the client is informed of their basic framework and concerns of the
relationship. Professional disclosures are often provided during this stage. These are considered
legal documents for both the client and counselor to sign. During Stage 2 Problem Identification
occurs. The client and counselor will validate initial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once termination has been decided on it should be a gradual process. Time is needed for both the
counselor and client to deal with the loss involved. Consider termination when: 1) the client is close
to reaching the agreed upon number of sessions, 2) there is a reduction or elimination of symptoms,
3) the client has gained enough insight and skills to deal with further recurring symptoms, 4) there is
a resolution of transference issues, 5) the client has the ability to work effectively, enjoy life, and
play, and 6) continued services are not likely to be helpful. Clients and Counselors both may resist

Counseling Center Narrative
When I first arrived to DIG Community Counseling Center, I had to get a better understanding of
the paperwork aspect of counseling as well as handling the front office duties along with Mary.
When I first arrived at DIG Community Counselling center, I was given a sheet of the
responsibilities that I would do throughout the course of the seven weeks. Mrs. Lakeisha Lake set
me down and what about her rules and expectations. Mrs. Lakeisha Lake exclaimed, "Ilyasah, I
want to go over with you my rules and expectation as being an intern at DIG Community

that I am not getting paid for.

Degree In Counseling
Pursuing a degree in counseling is a task that is both exciting and scary at the same time. There are
many processes in which the new graduate student goes through not only academically, but also in
their personal life. This journal entry provides a short perspective of how life change for one
student. Here, one can find some of the thoughts and feelings a new counselor in training (CIT)
experienced during enrollment, beginning class, and some of the changes made to fit graduate
studies into life. To begin with, many who choose to go into counseling do so for different reasons.
In the case of one particular student, the motivation came after seeing the impact a counselor could
have with her clients and seeing the need within the community. ... Show more content on

As mentioned above, there are specific times when each assignment is due each week. Thus, time
management skills need to be utilized in order to consistently turn in assignments on time. For many
who are in the counseling program the adjustments can be difficult to achieve at first, given that it
lessens their leisure time or because it takes time away from their family members. Adjustments are
not only difficult for those in the program, but also those close to them. However, one important
piece of advice is to focus on quality time with family members. Having good communication about
the expectations graduate school requires with family members is also important in order to obtain
both emotional support as well as assistance in other

Crisis Counseling
Great post Lori! I enjoyed your detailed descriptions of the skills necessary to help a client with a
crisis. I found an article that details continuous and focused tasks that a counselor should perform
when working with a client in crisis. Having the skill set ready to engage the client is central prior to
administering a crisis plan.
Myer, Lewis, & James (2013) states crisis counseling can change from minute to minute as clients
rotate through levels of balance and unbalance within their lives. A client can be calm and in control
to distressed quickly. A crisis counselor must be attentive to the client though all phases.
Assessment, safety, and support are noted as "continuous tasks" a counselor must perform with a
client (Myer, Lewis, & James, 2013). Monitoring safety is crucial, whether it is from a natural
disaster or an assault, safety of the client is something that needs to be done throughout the
intervention. Assessment of the client should be continuous because it monitors the client's ... Show

Contact is viewed as communication, establishing a connection with the client and demonstrating
genuine interest in their wellness. Helping a client gain control is aiding them in regulating their
reactions to the crisis additionally, forming a plan is equally as beneficial. The goal is to assist the
client put order into their lives after the chaos the crisis caused (Myer, Lewis, & James, 2013). Once
the client's problems are defined, finding resources to help them long term is key. Finally, follow–up
is necessary to address any changes and to make sure the client is progressing forward.
In conclusion, applying the necessary crisis skills, should come before beginning a crisis plan. The
client is going to benefit from a crisis plan however, the skills will build a strong therapeutic alliance

Ethical Issues In Counseling
The American Counseling Association was established in the mid 1900's. It is an organization that
many counselor or future counselors may consider as their bible. With a very informative website
available, there are various tabs and links that will allow the person browsing the site to gain more
knowledge about counseling as well as suggested membership to the various divisional
organizations associated with ACA. While browsing through the website, I found many surprising
facts in addition to words of comfort through blogs written by members of ACA. The American
Counseling Association is a professional organization in which the ethical guidelines are thoroughly
explained for counselors and counselors in training.
While viewing the website, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was one division that stood out the most, one I definitely would join, the Association for
Child and Adolescent Counseling. It is my desire to target my counseling towards children and
adolescents. This division is attractive to me because it was developed to better understand the
development of children and adolescents, something I wish to gain more knowledge of and
advocate. The American Counseling Association has various divisions/organizations that are very
informative and beneficial for counselor or students pursuing a counseling career. There are some
interesting facts about these divisions I researched. Becoming a member of ACA and a division are
extremely beneficial. Even though some counselors are viewed as though they have no issues
whether financially or mentally, all of these benefits prove this view wrong. Members of ACA are
given great discounts on everyday life needs such as different insurances. There are other ways to
save once you become a member. I found this to be intriguing because it shows that counselors need
help as well. Other benefits such as continued education, networking, and activities for advocating
certain divisions of ACA are available. The American Counselor Association website again is very
beneficial, it is essential that counselor spread the word about this organization to other counselors,
students, or even those who are

Ethical Challenges In Counseling
Apprehensions and Challenges An apprehension I have as I entered into the counseling field is that I
may unconsciously hold back a part of myself in fear of crossing ethical boundaries, by saying or
possibly doing something that may offend my client. In addition being prepared to take action if and
when an ethical situation arises. I also have to be self– aware of any biases I may be hindering that
could or would cause ethical challenges or issues. The Challenge I will have is determining how to
deal with an ethical situation when it arises with a client. When a counselor is faced with an ethical
dilemma, it can be the professional counselors biggest ical challenge in determining what the best
course of action to will be (Forester–Miller & Davis,1996).
I realize that as I evolve in the counseling field my level of comfort and understanding of ethical
behavior and situations will continue to increase.
There is a level of nervousness I have with ethics regarding counseling. I am thinking with the
ethical policies and procedures the solution is to continue to study the ACA code of ethics and be
aware of what I say and how I interact with my future clients. As a counselor and after exhausting
all that I know to uphold ethics, I feel I will still ask how can I know if I have done the right thing?
(Van Hoose & Paradise, 1979). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One role of ethics is that it exists to promote and protect the welfare of the clients ( Remley &

duty to make up for a wrong which can be foundational to a counselor's social justice and advocacy
profession (Remley, & Herlihy, 2016). The second foundational ethic is justice. This refers to the
counselor's commitment to fairness in professional relationships. It also demands equality (ACA,
2014). Reparation and justice speakly directly to the disenfranchised, diversity and

Example Of Multiculturalism In Counseling
Multiculturalism
The counseling profession it's self has progressed tremendously over the last century, with the
creation of ethical standards and concerns for multiculturalism. Before 1962, multiculturalism was
not identified as a concern; professional counselors could provide or deny services due to any
diversity. Counselors were stuck in stereotypical thinking and didn't take concern for other's
personal identifications. Wren was the first of many to bring the topic of multiculturalism to the
awareness of professionals. Issues and concerns continued to be identified over the years, causing
changes in the way professionals handled cultural diverse issues. In 1992, Multicultural
competencies and standards were published to assist professionals in working with people of
difference. Multiculturalism also is written in the ACA code of Ethics, taking into account
differences in language, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual–orientation, physical abilities, race,
culture, and ethnicity. Even aft the century of modifications of the counseling profession, there
continues to be new issues and concerns that will need to be addressed to continue improving the
lives of our society.
The main issues to remember when it comes to multicultural counseling is that everyone should be
treated as equal, no matter the differences in language, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual–
orientation, physical abilities or appearance, race, culture, and ethnicity. For a professional
counselor, it is

Group Counseling Reflection
I learned two significant things about group counseling in this course. The first thing that I learned is
the importance of setting up a treatment plan. The intention is to follow the client from their
entrance into the program until the client is discharged. In this process the clients' problems are
identified through various assessments and as each problem is addressed, it is checked off of the list.
Once all of the problems are checked off of the list, the client is considered as having completed the
plan. This plan is especially important because it evokes thoughtful conversation between the client
and the counselor and is the best method to gain information from the client regarding the help they
want to receive. The second most significant thing that I learned about group counseling is how to
design a group from start to finish. From pre group design, planning the goals of the group and
determining the members to setting up the environment and structuring the sessions, each step adds
its own important components to designing group counseling. As a potential group leader I have
learned a few things about myself in terms of my interactions with the clients. I am patient with my
clients because I understand that it takes time for clients to build trust in the counselor and because it
also takes time for a client to accept their situation allowing them to move toward positive change. I
am a good listener because I realize that as a counselor, I have to allow my clients the

Professional Identity In Counseling
According to Remley and Herlihy (2015), professional counselor identity is defined by the process
of ascertaining the history and development of counseling related professions, articulating the roles
and functions of counselors and related professions, describing the differences and similarities of
counseling and other professions, participating in professional organizations, being knowledgeable
about the legal and ethical issues in counseling, and advocating for clients and the profession.
A strong professional identity allows individuals to establish a strong sense of self before assisting
clients with their personal identity. It is important that we know who we are and what we have to
offer the counseling profession. Having a strong professional identity allows counselors to emerge
from school and go into the work setting with a sense of pride and confidence about their defining
role in the counseling profession. If the professional identity is not developed early in the learning
process, it leaves the identity to be established within the workplace. Having a strong professional
identity communicates to others that you are competent and that your services are important. Better
outcomes in the counseling process occur when the counselor is viewed as ... Show more content on

Career In Counseling
Senior Research Paper Rough Draft All my life I had always been everyone "go to person". I love
listening to people, and giving them advice. When I was eight years old I decided that I wanted to be
a counselor, and that is what I stuck with ever since. A counselor helps people, families, or couples
with emotional issues, mental issues, and just general issues(Choosing a Career in Counseling). This
is something that I do every day of my life, and I would love to do it as a career. It makes me feel
when I can help other people feel good. I do it now out of the kindness of my heart, why not get paid

client feel comfortable talking to you, and I do that all the time with my friends. In this career my
everyday job would be to help people manage and overcome mental and emotional disorders and
problems with their family and other relationships (U.S Genetic Counseling). I would have to help

Career Counseling And Development Counseling
It is safe to say that some people are very aware of who they are, what is most important to them and
how they want to make a difference in the world. However, the same simply cannot be said for
others. While we may have hobbies or ideas that we are very passionate about, it 's not always easy
turning them into something more. Some people need a bit more guidance to figure out certain
aspects of life. This is where career counseling comes to be of great help. Professionals aid in
helping others make informed decisions about their careers by counseling individuals in aspects of

Self–concept is the way we view ourselves and how we fit into society. It entails many elements and
it develops over time, starting when we are young children. Although self–concept encounters many
factors that assist in the shaping and molding of oneself , the facet that holds greatest significance
may be the nature–nurture aspect. Delving into the nature–based (genetic) and nurture–based
(environmental) factors in relation to one 's self–concept is a critically important step counselors
should take in helping their clients gain a better understanding of themselves and move forward in
making the best decisions possible in their careers (Gottfredson, 2002).
Interviewer: Well then, what is the most important relationship among career, personality, and self–
worth?
Gottfredson: Self–concept is one 's perspective of themselves, however, if you 're self–worth is low,
your self–concept is likely not up to par with who you really are. If you don 't know your worth, you
're not going to see yourself in the most positive light, and therefore not realizing your true potential.
With low self–worth or self–esteem comes self–doubt, and further embeds restrictions we may have
already placed on ourselves. This is how we come to settle for careers that while may seem easier or
more accessible, often do not fit our true selves. Finding your self–worth and gaining confidence in

Personal Counseling Characteristics
My Personal Counseling Characteristics Capuzzi, Stauffer, and Gross (2016) highlighted the
existence of "core conditions" identified throughout the counseling literature and research as an
essential piece of the therapeutic relationship (p. 8). Possessing and demonstrating these
characteristics and behaviors strengthen the helping alliance and aid in effectiveness as a counselor
when guiding the client to achieve optimal wellness (Capuzzi et al., 2016). The following narrative
outlines characteristics and behaviors emphasized as strengths necessary when developing a
therapeutic alliance with a client and those acknowledged as potential challenges or weaknesses
hindering the development of a therapeutic alliance. Additionally, explanations are discussed for
selected strengths and challenges as well as strategies to address challenges and weaknesses.
An Area of Strength Warmth as a core concept essential to the helping relationship is regarded as the
counselor's ability to convey "genuine caring and concern" to clients (Capuzzi et al., 2016, p. 11).
Without this ability to convey warmth as a counselor, the counseling process will not be effective,
especially as I believe warmth is essential to building rapport and promoting an environment in
which clients feel comfortable disclosing intimate details of their lives. After all, a client may be
more reluctant to disclose intimate aspects of their life if they believe that the individual to which
they are disclosing does not

Counseling Family Confidentiality
Chapter 10: Counseling Families and Groups Counseling families can be difficult to enforce
confidentiality that can be difficult t o make obligatory in group settings. Therefore, counselors
should make extra efforts to ensure that group members understand the concept on how important
confidentiality is (Remley & Herlihy, 2014, p.271). Chapter 10 provides information on developing
diversity and values in family and group counseling.
How is confidentiality different when counseling couples, families, or groups, as opposed to
counseling an individual client? According to the text book, confidentiality is different with couples
and families due to privileged communication. When dealing with married couples, there are
situations where stressful topics are discussed between the husband and the wife and later on a
divorce may occur. One of the spouses may want a counselor to repeat confidential information in a
legal court about the other spouse during their counseling sessions, whereas, the other spouse wants
to keep her information enclosed ( Remley & Herlihy, 2014, p.256).When counseling an individual
client, the client is the only person that the counselor have to obligate to when ensuring
confidentiality. ACA Codes of Ethics states that in a couples and family counseling, counselors
clearly defines who is considered "the client" and discusses expectation and limitation of
confidentiality, ( 2014, Standard b.4.b.). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

any counselor considered effective must posses them. The paper has a separate discussion of both

This respect will enable a counselor explore chances for change and provide accepted and genuine
attention and caring. More importantly, effective counselors should respect themselves first before
expecting the same to be extended by others. This can be done through building strong realistic and
self worth virtues as well as receiving and giving support to others. They shouldn't isolate
themselves or have any sense of self destructiveness. Furthermore, effective counselor must first
know who they are and what they are capable of doing concerning guidance and counseling before
they get to know their clients. They should have clear goals of what they want o achieve in their line
of career by a clear sense of values and priorities that are very important in attending individuals
who actually need counseling such as drug addicts and family violence victims.
Effective counselors must recognize the limits of their power especially influential and convincing
powers because they may compromise the effectiveness of a counseling program thus they should
be able to tame their power (Whiston, 2009). However, effective counselors do not use their power
for their own gain but to help and support the clients in the best reform procedures. On the other
hand, Gladding (2008) confirm that effective counselors must always be in touch with themselves
especially when dealing with clients who present the same experiences as those of the counselor. In

Counseling Philosophy
1. What is the philosophy of the counseling profession? How has this changed over time? Why is
this important to study?
The philosophy of the counseling profession encompasses many intricacies that are centered around
the notion of multicultural competency. The goal of a counselor is to facilitate practical change in a
person's life and strengthen their autonomy through providing genuine empathy and a responsive
and welcoming environment. A counselor has the ethical obligation to empower individuals to
manage and or reduce the negative impact life–stressor, and symptoms create in their lives to enable
them to thrive in society. As humanity has evolved, so has the counseling theories and approaches.

More importantly, a theoretical orientation provides a counselor a framework to operate within to
ensure a person's immediate needs are being addressed ethically and competently. As a counselor
continues to develop their professional identity, they adopt these particular approaches which

aligns with their particular worldview and is used to empower a person's ability to problem–solve
and cope with symptoms. When a counselor fosters a theoretical orientation, he or she is focused on
the individual's strengths to promote and scaffold their success and self–efficacy. In a personal

"The solution–focused counselor wants to describe the goal as something the counselee can get on
track with upon leaving the initial interview." (Kollar, 2011, p. 131) The chief aim is to get a picture
of who the counselee wants to be once the issue they are dealing with has been dealt with. It should
be a picture that glorifies God and has substance. The counselor's role during this phase is that of a
collaborator with the counselee, as they work together in gaining a better understanding of what the
counselee has as their goals. A guiding assumption through this phase is the God is already starting
to heal the counselee and is already working a higher purpose through them.
Phase 3 – Developing the Action Plan
The main purpose in this phase is to assist the counselee in creating an plan of action to start
enacting in their life. The goal of the phase should be to put together a realistic plan that they can the
counselee can start carrying out immediately. "Wisdom does not necessarily consist of knowing
what to do in an ultimate sense, but in knowing what to do next." (Kollar, 2011, p. 127) It should not
be a plan for the distant future. It's one that should promote strong emotional/ mental health, allow
for a closer walk with Christ, and assist in the building up of relationships around the counselee. The
plan should also be one that the counselee will be able to keep rolling with well after the counseling
sessions have ended.

Informed Consent In Counseling
Counseling is a profession that is grounded on direct interaction between the helper and the client as
seeking the help. This delicate profession may be harmful if correct procedure and core standard are
not respected. Counselors are dictated to respect the rights of the clients. As a collaborating
relationship within the counseling session both the clinician and the help seeker have rights and
responsibilities. Here comes the role of the standard code of ethics to draw the lines and stated the
limits to the profession. Counselors should conform to these standards.

Also, Gladding (2013) states that it is crucial for counselors to remind themselves of the uniqueness
of each individual client. Therefore, I have been taught of having an inclusive understanding of the
client's culture, sexual orientation or gender identity, and religion. Simultaneously, sensitivity to
one's personal worldview and the appropriate skills to address culturally different clients (Gladding,
2013) must be demonstrated. Difficulties in multicultural counseling, such as language and racial
discrimination, must also be recognized. In art therapy, an art therapist's role requires a continuous
process of knowledge and perspective of the accepted aesthetic norms of colors, symbols, and other
creative components specific to the client's ethnicity, spirituality, family values, and traditions. An
example of this would be the use of the creative art making when treating clients of a Native
American background due to the sacredness of arts in their culture (Gladding,

with grief (Abouguendia, et. al., 2004). Among the benefits of short‐group counseling for grief are
increases in self–esteem, mental health, and social functioning

Solution–focused brief career counseling is career counseling based on the work of de Shazer.
Solution–focused brief career counseling stresses the importance of clients using their personal
stories to plan their future. The Solution–focused brief career counseling is originally compromised
sixth steps, but theorist Amundson added a seventh step in 2003.
1. Step One: Relationship development – Career counselors do not act as experts, but they
encourage clients to find their own solution. Counselors can be viewed as coaches.

Interview Questions On Counseling And Counseling
I was able to interview four people about their perceptions and beliefs about counseling. I noted
differences and similarities among their responses which bring about a clearer perspective on the
reality of counseling as a profession. The family and friends I choose to interview about their
perspective on counseling included my mom Cathy, my brother Ben and my friend Mackenzie. I
interviewed a counselor named Chris who is a youth leader at my church. Chris works at Penn State
Hershey Medical Center Psychiatry Unit with adults doing individual, couple and family counseling.
The responses given through these interviews allowed for a broader and clearer view of the
perception and reality of counseling. The first question posed to the interviewees was what happens
in a typical counseling session. My mom, Cathy stated she thought the counselor asks questions to
the client and listens. She went on to explain the counselor is trying to get to the root of the problem.
The process of counseling is done through the lens of empathy according to Cathy. Mackenzie states
the counseling begins by the counselor asking the new client questions about him or herself. The
counselor is trying to figure out what brought the client into counseling and discuss what goals can
be achieved. Ben thought counseling session starts with the client telling the counselor how they are
feeling. The counselor is able to move the client past the surface and move to the issues that lie

Career Counseling Assessment with Substance Abuse Population While it is certainly true that any
individual from any population can face questions, dilemmas, or circumstances regarding their
career or occupation, this is an especially pertinent topic when working with those recovering from
substance use disorders. Graham (2006) noted the importance surrounding the self–concept of these
individuals as a primary factor for not only recovery but future career planning. Darrell Luzzo

Questions about capability, usefulness, and worth arise, including the value they can bring to the
workforce. In my opinion, it is important that assessments, and even counseling strategies make
sense and connect with each other. Many of the subscales or information elicited by clients during
the CBI may bring up conversations related to client negative self–talk. The Career Thoughts

To ensure that all possible clients of all walks of life are successfully benefiting from the counseling
profession, advancement in the assessment field should be of a primary concern for present and
future counselors. It is understood and respected that a multitude of counselors vary in the
foundations of their theoretical framework and collectively not all counselors participate in
assessment with their clients, but as the counseling profession continues to grow the demand of
expansion is critical. According to Balkin & Juhnke (2014), counselors may need to note that
although psychological assessment is legally in a professional turf war, we need to remember that
there is a public demand of assessment practices with dually eligible professions able to reach out.

Nonmaleficence In Counseling
How do you think you can best utilize yourself as a tool for counseling? From a professional
viewpoint, there is an innumerable amount of resources and tools that can support me in my
counseling sessions. Just to name couple resources, Barbara Herlihy and Gerald Corey (2015)
preamble suggested that counselors should aim to enhance the human development throughout the
lifespan. Also, the therapist should honor diversity and embrace a multicultural approach in support
of the worth, dignity, potential, and uniqueness of people within their social and cultural contexts.
Herlihy & Corey (20015) propounded promoting social justice, safeguarding the integrity of the
counselor–client relationship, and practicing competently and ethically. Furthermore, Herilhy &
Corey (2015) suggested that therapists and counselors should govern client–relationship on
principles based upon The American Counseling Association (ACA). Practitioners should avoid to
cause and do harm to clients. Nonmaleficence is a fundamental principle that relates to do no harm.
In the ACA Code of Ethics A.4.b. refers to personal values counselors are aware of their own values,
attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors and avoid imposing values that are inconsistent with counseling
goals (Herlihy &Corey 2015). Herlihy and Corey (2015) go on to say that counselors need to respect

Genetic Counseling
According to Berger (2014), a patient can receive genetic counseling to learn more about a
condition/disease he or she may possibly be at risk for and may possibly pass onto their children (p.

benefits and drawbacks for taking the genetic test, the test results' meaning, and how having the
condition could affect their future children (Berger, 2014, p. 88). Then, the patient – not the genetic
counselor – makes decisions about his or her next steps with respect to all the information they have
been provided by the genetic counselor (Berger, 2014, p. 89).

Countertransference In Counseling
Individuals have a strong desire to be understood by others, yet they may often remain unfulfilled
(Kottler, 2017 pp. 273–274). Those that enter the profession may find an awareness in solving their
concerns and problems while on the path of assisting other people (Kottler, 2017). In view, the
journey toward helping others may lead a counselor to pay attention to acknowledging their own
feelings, self–discovery, self–assessment, and such self–realization may, in turn, be a catalyst for
growth. However, a counselor's vulnerability of countertransference may arise if the counselor
transfers feelings to a client, which may be a response to the phenomenon of transference. Also,
being close to others situational difficulties may cause one to internalize other's problems. In
viewpoint, and in agreement with Kottler (2017), the boldness and the value of risk taking are
essential in a strategic therapeutic client relationship. Interestingly, working with children who have
emotional, behavioral disorders, while at times taking home the day's occurrences happen to help
me to discover new positive solutions and outcomes with quiet time to reflect upon the day, for

the judicial system has increased my resiliency and further motivates me to help others toward

The main goal in Christian counseling is to get the individual to move over to Christ, and then to
move up to glorification. By doing this they allow themselves to let God to start healing their
personal problems. In a sense it is similar to the, rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) model.
Even though, this model was created to be an atheistic model that did not require God to intervene,
the main premise of the model is to help allow the client to realize if they change their inner thought
proses it will allow them to effect change. However, this model can be used to manipulate the

  • 3. The Counseling Relationship Analysis List and describe the stages of the counseling relationship as presented by the author of the textbook. The Counseling Relationship consist of six stages: Rapport and Trust Building, Problem Identification, Deepening Understanding and Goal Setting, Work, Closure, and Post Interview. During Stage 1, Rapport and Trust Building, the counselor works on developing a comfortable and trusting relationship with the use of good social skills, listening skills, empathy, and culture sensitivity. Without loosing focus of the main purpose of the session (assisting the client with their self identified problem), both the client and counselor will find common interest in an effort to build their relationship with one another. The counselor mentally identifies issues the clients bring up, all while eventfully reviewing with the client the accuracy of that list. The counselor will want to ensure a safe environment and the client is informed of their basic framework and concerns of the relationship. • 9. Crisis Counseling Great post Lori! I enjoyed your detailed descriptions of the skills necessary to help a client with a crisis. I found an article that details continuous and focused tasks that a counselor should perform when working with a client in crisis. Having the skill set ready to engage the client is central prior to administering a crisis plan. Myer, Lewis, & James (2013) states crisis counseling can change from minute to minute as clients rotate through levels of balance and unbalance within their lives. A client can be calm and in control to distressed quickly. A crisis counselor must be attentive to the client though all phases. Assessment, safety, and support are noted as "continuous tasks" a counselor must perform with a client (Myer, Lewis, & James, 2013). Monitoring safety is crucial, whether it is from a natural disaster or an assault, safety of the client is something that needs to be done throughout the intervention. Assessment of the client should be continuous because it monitors the client's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The American Counseling Association has various divisions/organizations that are very informative and beneficial for counselor or students pursuing a counseling career. • 15. Ethical Challenges In Counseling Apprehensions and Challenges An apprehension I have as I entered into the counseling field is that I may unconsciously hold back a part of myself in fear of crossing ethical boundaries, by saying or possibly doing something that may offend my client. In addition being prepared to take action if and when an ethical situation arises. I also have to be self– aware of any biases I may be hindering that could or would cause ethical challenges or issues. The Challenge I will have is determining how to deal with an ethical situation when it arises with a client. When a counselor is faced with an ethical dilemma, it can be the professional counselors biggest ical challenge in determining what the best course of action to will be (Forester–Miller & Davis,1996). I realize that as I evolve in the counseling field my level of comfort and understanding of ethical behavior and situations will continue to increase. There is a level of nervousness I have with ethics regarding counseling. I am thinking with the ethical policies and procedures the solution is to continue to study the ACA code of ethics and be aware of what I say and how I interact with my future clients. • 19. Example Of Multiculturalism In Counseling Multiculturalism The counseling profession it's self has progressed tremendously over the last century, with the creation of ethical standards and concerns for multiculturalism. Before 1962, multiculturalism was not identified as a concern; professional counselors could provide or deny services due to any diversity. Counselors were stuck in stereotypical thinking and didn't take concern for other's personal identifications. Wren was the first of many to bring the topic of multiculturalism to the awareness of professionals. Issues and concerns continued to be identified over the years, causing changes in the way professionals handled cultural diverse issues. In 1992, Multicultural competencies and standards were published to assist professionals in working with people of difference. Multiculturalism also is written in the ACA code of Ethics, taking into account differences in language, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual–orientation, physical abilities, race, culture, and ethnicity. Even aft the century of modifications of the counseling profession, there continues to be new issues and concerns that will need to be addressed to continue improving the lives of our society. The main issues to remember when it comes to multicultural counseling is that everyone should be treated as equal, no matter the differences in language, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual– orientation, physical abilities or appearance, race, culture, and ethnicity. • 21. Group Counseling Reflection I learned two significant things about group counseling in this course. The first thing that I learned is the importance of setting up a treatment plan. The intention is to follow the client from their entrance into the program until the client is discharged. In this process the clients' problems are identified through various assessments and as each problem is addressed, it is checked off of the list. Once all of the problems are checked off of the list, the client is considered as having completed the plan. This plan is especially important because it evokes thoughtful conversation between the client and the counselor and is the best method to gain information from the client regarding the help they want to receive. The second most significant thing that I learned about group counseling is how to design a group from start to finish. From pre group design, planning the goals of the group and determining the members to setting up the environment and structuring the sessions, each step adds its own important components to designing group counseling. As a potential group leader I have learned a few things about myself in terms of my interactions with the clients. I am patient with my clients because I understand that it takes time for clients to build trust in the counselor and because it also takes time for a client to accept their situation allowing them to move toward positive change. I am a good listener because I realize that as a counselor, I have to allow my clients the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Professional Identity In Counseling According to Remley and Herlihy (2015), professional counselor identity is defined by the process of ascertaining the history and development of counseling related professions, articulating the roles and functions of counselors and related professions, describing the differences and similarities of counseling and other professions, participating in professional organizations, being knowledgeable about the legal and ethical issues in counseling, and advocating for clients and the profession. A strong professional identity allows individuals to establish a strong sense of self before assisting clients with their personal identity. It is important that we know who we are and what we have to offer the counseling profession. Having a strong professional identity allows counselors to emerge from school and go into the work setting with a sense of pride and confidence about their defining role in the counseling profession. If the professional identity is not developed early in the learning process, it leaves the identity to be established within the workplace. • 25. Career In Counseling Senior Research Paper Rough Draft All my life I had always been everyone "go to person". I love listening to people, and giving them advice. When I was eight years old I decided that I wanted to be a counselor, and that is what I stuck with ever since. A counselor helps people, families, or couples with emotional issues, mental issues, and just general issues(Choosing a Career in Counseling). This is something that I do every day of my life, and I would love to do it as a career. It makes me feel when I can help other people feel good. I do it now out of the kindness of my heart, why not get paid for it? Counseling is not a hard job, if you are good at talking to people. You have to make your client feel comfortable talking to you, and I do that all the time with my friends. In this career my everyday job would be to help people manage and overcome mental and emotional disorders and problems with their family and other relationships (U.S Genetic Counseling). I would have to help my client get through whatever they are going through in a positive way. Some people need a bit more guidance to figure out certain aspects of life. This is where career counseling comes to be of great help. Self–concept is the way we view ourselves and how we fit into society. It entails many elements and it develops over time, starting when we are young children. Although self–concept encounters many factors that assist in the shaping and molding of oneself , the facet that holds greatest significance may be the nature–nurture aspect. Delving into the nature–based (genetic) and nurture–based (environmental) factors in relation to one 's self–concept is a critically important step counselors should take in helping their clients gain a better understanding of themselves and move forward in making the best decisions possible in their careers (Gottfredson, 2002). Interviewer: Well then, what is the most important relationship among career, personality, and self– worth? Gottfredson: Self–concept is one 's perspective of themselves, however, if you 're self–worth is low, your self–concept is likely not up to par with who you really are. If you don 't know your worth, you 're not going to see yourself in the most positive light, and therefore not realizing your true potential. With low self–worth or self–esteem comes self–doubt, and further embeds restrictions we may have already placed on ourselves. • 31. Personal Counseling Characteristics My Personal Counseling Characteristics Capuzzi, Stauffer, and Gross (2016) highlighted the existence of "core conditions" identified throughout the counseling literature and research as an essential piece of the therapeutic relationship (p. 8). Possessing and demonstrating these characteristics and behaviors strengthen the helping alliance and aid in effectiveness as a counselor when guiding the client to achieve optimal wellness (Capuzzi et al., 2016). The following narrative outlines characteristics and behaviors emphasized as strengths necessary when developing a therapeutic alliance with a client and those acknowledged as potential challenges or weaknesses hindering the development of a therapeutic alliance. Additionally, explanations are discussed for selected strengths and challenges as well as strategies to address challenges and weaknesses. An Area of Strength Warmth as a core concept essential to the helping relationship is regarded as the counselor's ability to convey "genuine caring and concern" to clients (Capuzzi et al., 2016, p. 11). Without this ability to convey warmth as a counselor, the counseling process will not be effective, especially as I believe warmth is essential to building rapport and promoting an environment in which clients feel comfortable disclosing intimate details of their lives. Counseling Family Confidentiality Chapter 10: Counseling Families and Groups Counseling families can be difficult to enforce confidentiality that can be difficult t o make obligatory in group settings. Therefore, counselors should make extra efforts to ensure that group members understand the concept on how important confidentiality is (Remley & Herlihy, 2014, p.271). Chapter 10 provides information on developing diversity and values in family and group counseling. How is confidentiality different when counseling couples, families, or groups, as opposed to counseling an individual client? According to the text book, confidentiality is different with couples and families due to privileged communication. When dealing with married couples, there are situations where stressful topics are discussed between the husband and the wife and later on a divorce may occur. One of the spouses may want a counselor to repeat confidential information in a legal court about the other spouse during their counseling sessions, whereas, the other spouse wants to keep her information enclosed ( Remley & Herlihy, 2014, p.256).When counseling an individual client, the client is the only person that the counselor have to obligate to when ensuring confidentiality.
