Procedures
GREETINGS (5 minutes)
Before students get into the classroom, I will connect my netbook to the smart TV to
get the slides ready for the 1st
activity and check that everything is working well.
- I will first greet my students and ask ‘How are you today? How was your weekend?
- I will ask ‘What day is it, today?’ and write it on the board.
- I will explain ss that their school and EESA from Hlario Ascasubi have agreed on a
Penpal project where students will exchange emails. The chosen students are…
YOU!!! 6th year!!! and 4th year from Ascasubi whose teacher is a very good friend of
mine. Let me tell you that the headteachers, Alicia Buscarolo and Álvaro Ezpeleta (I
will say that I don’t know him at all, LOL) are glad since both schools have been
working together on other projects. Any questions? Ok, hands-on!
WARM-UP
INTRODUCING THE ‘PENPAL PROJECT’ AND REFLECTING ABOUT WHAT
MAKES A GOOD (ONLINE/FACE-TO-FACE) FRIEND (10 minutes).
- Then, I will add that this project has two parts: one is the exchange of emails and the
other a video. But the videomust be chosen byyou, itmust befunny and appropriate,
such a viral Tik Tok video where altogether dance in the playground. Think of
something for the next class. You can send me some videos through the WA group.
Let’s have fun to finish this amazing but challenging year.
4. 4
- Last but not least, you’ll write your email through a Google doc that I have already
shared withyou. Don’t worry aboutthe WI-FI, Googledocsallowsyoutowriteoffline.
You already have the link to write the email today.
- I will share the PPT and read the quote out loud, ‘What do you think?
- Next, I will ask ‘What makes a good friend for you?’ (slide3). Ss answer before seeing
the Wordcloud.
- I will show the Wordcloud and ask them ‘Do you any of these words? some are
transparent words, i.e. they are very similar in Spanish such as dependable,
pessimistic, etc. The class discuss the meaning of the words and I will scaffold the
meaning of some of them with facial gestures. For example:
- Then, I will ask (slide 5) Can you identify positive and negative personality traits in
the Wordcloud?
- Let’s go back! I will elicit the positive ones and I will focus on spotting the negative
ones. I will use the PPT’s virtual pen to circle the negative traits to be aware of:
manipulative – judgmental – predatory – egocentric – pessimistic- greedy.
Forgiving face
5. 5
- I will warmss aboutthe importance of building healthyrelationshipswith friendsand
boyfriends/girlfriends. I will add 1
‘Remember that you don’t deserve to be treated
badly, especially by a friend, and that it’s not okay for them to act like this. If
you feel mistreated, you should end your ‘friendship’.
- Finally, to motivate and engage ss I will show them some pictures from Ascasubi’s
school and most importantly some pictures from their penpals taken on Thursday,
28th by Miss Mariana.
- I will ask ‘Has any of you been to Ascasubi or maybe in the Quality Ed. Project? You
may know that perhaps you will meet some of your penpals next year… (This is likely
to happen to some of the kids since the ss with the best projects travel to different
agrarian schools included Ascasubi’s school.)

6. 6
- I will add ‘Aren’t they lovely? Once I finished showing all the pictures, I will ask some
volunteers to read the email (slide 12).
Transition comment: Well, let’s start working on our emails, we must finish them today!!!
ACTIVITY 1: PENPALS EXCHANGE (ESSA N° 1 Bajo Hondo & ESSA N° 1 Hilario
Ascasubi) (1h 30 min)
- I will share the PPT and ask a volunteer to read the 1st model email (slide 4).
- Next, I will ask ‘How is the email organized? and elicit by grouping similar ideas in
the same paragraph.
- Ok, tell me ‘Which topics does Amy discuss with her penpal considering they don’t
know each other yet?’ I will elicit school, routines, preferences, music, etc.
- After that, I will ask ss to order the parts of an email in pairs (slide 5)
- I will check the correct order with the whole class.
- Then, I will go through the big bubbles ‘Greetings’, ‘Main body’ and ‘Closing’ to
review the basic structure and some phrases commonly found in informal email.
(slides 6, 7 & 8).
7. 7
- I will say ‘Now, we’re going to read an email that resembles much more your reality.
Please, remember that this is just a model to guide you to write your email. Don’t
copy whole sentences, please!
- I will ask again some volunteers to read the email. I have createdthis email following
the basic structure of an informal email from the British Council but trying to make
it as funny as possible with some weird likes, singers and names.
- Students read the email and I will make the connections between the top tips and
the highlighted phrases. This page of the handout (page 5) will use reference
numbers to help ss to make the connections.
8. 8
- Ok, I will ask ‘Don’t you want to know what’s Thiago’s favorite song? I will share slide
10 and say: the song is ‘No dijeron nada’ by Oscu (gamer & influencer). Super cool!
The idea of introducing a fun song it’s to create a light atmosphere and make a short
break during the handout’s activities.
- Finally, we’ll discuss with the whole class the following questions regarding the email
(slide 11).
o
o
- I will emphasize whether they feel comfortable including a photo of themselves, and
that of course it’s not mandatory. Do it if you want to. On the other hand, when the
student read the physical description included in the email, I will also ask if they
would like to describe themselves physically.
- The idea, needless to say, is indirectly to make ss reflect on their anxiety or shame
about their bodies without judging them.
- At the same time, I will encourage them to relax and enjoy making just a friend,
someone like you that wants to know someone from another place.
- Afterthis, I will ask ss to start drafting their emailsbymakinga listof topicsto include
in the email and then, to start typing it in the Google doc.
- I will encourage them to share links to songs, YouTubers, trailers, gifs or whatever
stuff they would like to share.
- Students will read each other drafts and give feedback. Do they find interesting
his/her classmate email? Could they spot some mistake?
Transition comment: Well, you have worked fantastically today! Do you want to have fun?
CLOSURE
Choosing a viral dance and rehearsal (15 min)
- I will share the PPT with some of viral dances ss shared in the WhatsApp group
during the week. Needless to say, I had to ‘cancel’ a few videos because of the
lyrics (some were very rude and inappropriate for this school event).
- Students will watch the videos and agree on which one they want to make. Once
all have agreed, we will move on to playground to rehearse the dance.
9. 9
- This is a nice and fun way of finishing a whole writing session.
- Finally, I will say ‘Ok, it’s time now! I’ll meet you next Monday that it’s going to
be our last class!!! I promise some cakes and treats, you deserve it, guys!
