■ Goodwin’s theory states that the lyrics of a song will almost always have an impact
and relate to the music video.
■ Visuals help the audience understand the meaning of the lyrics.
4. Genre characteristics
■ Music videos often use genre characteristics, which are basically stereotypes of the
music genre. For example in a rock video you would expect the band to do a live
performance.
Notions of Looking
■ Notions of Looking is looking into someone's life, for example women are often seen as
sexual objects and men are seen as violent.

■ Voyeurism is used a lot in music videos, it is most commonly used with the female
body, however it has and can also be used with the male body.
Intertextual reference
■ Intertextual reference is when the video is influenced by cultural influences.
6. Mulvey’sTheory
■ Mulvey’s theory is that in film, the male gaze happens when the audience is in the
perspective of a straight male, and the scene focuses on the curves of a woman's body.

■ The theory suggests that the gaze denies female identity and objectifies women.
■ She also thinks that Hollywood is very guilty of this, and they play a part in making it
acceptable for men to look at women in such a way.
