Mission And Mexican Period Essay
The Mission and Mexican period is a difficult topic for fourth grade students to understand and
teachers to teach. But, one way I can teach students about the mission system and Mexican period is
through lecture and an interactive activity, like a play. Because by providing students with lectures
and illustrations, students can see and understand for themselves the different changes that occurred
through these periods and feel the impact of these changes through acting in a play. Before, teaching
students about the mission and Mexican period, I believe it is important to teach students about
California history before the arrival of the Spanish. I will teach the students about California life
before the Spanish through a lecture and providing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Informing the students the Spanish arrived to California to build missions and introduce a new
religion, converting Native Americans into Catholics. Showing all the 21 missions in California and
informing the students, "The missions became the largest and most productive Spanish communities
in California...the early missions were tiny, tenuous settlements marked by stick, mud, marginal
agriculture and small neophyte populations" (Eden, 91), and providing illustrations of the missions
and Spanish life. Students will then compare and contrast California before the Spanish and the
mission period. Analyzing the changes California went through before and during mission period.
After introducing the mission system, I will briefly explain the short Mexican period by explaining
how most California cities and streets received their names. For example, I will ask the students, "
Has anyone walked on or drove by Sepulveda Blvd or Rancho Palos Verdes"? and "Does anyone
know how these streets received their names"? Introducing them to the history of rancho and pueblo
society during the Mexican Period in

San Joaqu??n County Road Research Paper
The ease with which Didion's 1968 stranger could tour the Valley would have astonished its
residents sixty years earlier. The township's earliest "roads" favored the wildlife tracks and native
trails that paralleled the river and crossed the plain. The 1908 roads were little better than those first
paths–perhaps wider as teamsters strove to keep their wagons out of the deep ruts, but more pitted
and rougher. In an era when no driver could call any San Joaquín County road "good," the county's
residents widely recognized Tulare Township's roads as the region's worst.
Founded by urban bicyclists on the East Coast, the Good Roads Movement had, by the 1900s,
spread to rural California. In Northern California, agricultural interests and the ... Show more

Here, where INTERSTATE 205 crosses California Avenue and Tom Paine Slough, the Stockton–
Oakland Stage Road turned west and traced–although slightly more north–the modern Interstate
highway's rough path toward Bethany.
Near Bethany, where Grant Line Road diverges from the Byron Highway today, the original dirt
path forked. The left–hand fork, at first the popular trail, turned south toward Corral Hollow
(modern San José Road takes its name from this fork). The center fork headed southwest to reach
Middle Pass [Patterson Pass]. When the stage road took form soon after the Gold Rush, travelers
chose the right–hand fork that scaled Livermore's Pass [Altamont Pass]. Now, Grant Line Road
between Bryon Highway and Altamont Pass Road follows this path's bearing.
The Rancho el Pescadero survey (1861) and patent (1865) brought changes to the West Side Road.
The grant's proprietors, eager to evict squatters from their land, erected a fourteen–mile fence along
the rancho's freshly surveyed borders in 1866. Once Generals Frémont and Naglee enclosed the
grant, the stage road traced the angled seam between the two Rancho el Pescadero land grants.
Travelers have used this alignment continuously–calling it the Stockton–Oakland Stage Road, Banta
Road, the West Side Road, the LINCOLN HIGHWAY, US HIGHWAY 50, and INTERSTATE 5–for
over 150 years.

John Malquist Research Paper
The Researcher, The Mentor, The Galvanizer
Sherwin John Carlquist is a botanist and a photographer who understood the basic principles of
wood anatomy and evolution through his research in Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (Sherwin,
(a)). Sherwin's studies of dicotyledonous wood evolution has directed him to pursue understanding
the evolutionary patterns of islands (Edward & Roy, 1997). This was the turning point where
Sherwin's work finally been acknowledged after thirty long years, on 1991. He had a grand total of
24 principles governing long–distance dispersal and evolution on islands acknowledged by other
botanists (CA).
Early Days
Sherwin John Carlquist was born on July 7th, 1930 in Los Angeles, son of Robert William and
Helen (Bauer) Carlquist (prabook). At the age of 22, Sherwin received his undergraduate bachelor
degree at University of California, then decided to do a PHD on philosophy, and graduated at 1956.
While Sherwin was taking on his PHD, at the last year, 1955 – 1956, Sherwin was awarded a
postdoctoral study from Harvard University, there were only Three NSF fellowships during graduate
and postdoctoral years (Sherwin, (a)).

Anglo American History
Maressi Falcon The history of the New World, as we know it now, is vast, rich and told in multiple
perceptions. For the Anglos, it was Manifest Destiny in the 1840s that drove these settlers to further
expand from the original thirteen colonies they first inhabited, this ideology drove them west "to
overtake [the Spanish and Natives] was no crime for Anglo American were required to follow God's
injunction to make the land fruitful, prosper economically and attain their divinely appointed
calling" to Christianize, civilize and save souls (Almaguer, 52). For the Spanish, the New World was
a world they always knew living in their own territory humbly and fruitfully. Finally, to the original
inhabitants, the New World was always their world but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Almaguer, "nineteenth–century relations between Mexicans and Anglos in California
were powerfully determined by class division within the two populations, divisions that led to the
divergent historical experiences for the Mexican working class and the ranchero elite" (45). The
biggest division of class happened during the Mexican and Spanish periods, Spanish and Mexican
governments issued a total of twenty land grants of "415,959 acre of land and represented 38.6
percent of the total land area in the [Santa Barbara County]" to families such as "Juan Camarillo,
Isabel Yorba, Jose Arnaz, Juan Sanchez, and the de la Guerra brothers" who will later become
"'gente de razons,'" the largest landholders (Almaguer 76–77). What this 1860s act did, was separate
the Mexican class as a whole, if you were a gente de razon, you were Rancho elite, you were royals
of the town, dominating everything from economics and agriculture to political and social affairs. If
you were not Rancho elite, you were "rancheros and farmers with small land holdings, skilled
rancho laborers and foremen, artisans in the Mexican pueblos", or as they were often referred,
"mestizos (mixed racial ancestry) and was typically viewed as "'middle class'" by travelers visiting
California during the Mexican period" (Almaguer, 48). Now with this vision in mind it is not hard to
see how different of an experience the Spanish had when the Anglos came because of their already
dominant positions in life creating this image of

Gerald Ford Biography
Following his defeat in the 1976 presidential election, Gerald Ford retired to Rancho Mirage,
California. Thereafter, Ford appeared frequently in public as a speaker, lecturing for private
audiences and on university campuses. In his post–presidential years, Ford wrote a number of
books, including an account of his presidency, A Time to Heal (1979), and Humor and the
Presidency (1987). Always very athletic, Ford continued to enjoy the game of golf.
However, Ford's exit from Washington did not immediately end his political ambitions. He surprised
most observers when he entered into discussions with Ronald Reagan in 1980 about running on the
Republican ticket with the former governor of California. However, Ford took the offer to the media
(specifically to CBS anchor Walter Cronkite in a convention interview); feeling betrayed, an angry
Reagan withdrew the offer, which ultimately went to George H.W. Bush. During the 1980s and
1990s, Ford emerged as an elder statesman in the Republican Party. Likewise, Ford wrote
extensively on domestic and foreign policy issues of the day. He also served on a number of
corporate boards and commissions, including a stint as co–chair of The National Commission on
Federal Election Reform in 2001. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Summary of Burro Genius Essay
Burro Genius is story about the life of Victor Villasenor showing how he overcame racism at school
and his difficulties in reading to become a famous writer.
Victor had many advantages to be a successful student. He was born in a rich family. His parents,
Salvador and Lupe, were wealthy landowners and their rancho, where they had built a beautiful
home, was very large. The rancho gave a healthy lifestyle for all his family members. Before
starting kindergarten, Victor could ride horses like an adult and was ready to live as a cowboy.
Moreover, his family was ready to help him whenever he needed.
However, school was extremely difficult to Victor. In fact, school was a different world from his
rancho, where his family loved him. He knew no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those made him think of justice after all years: He wanted to kill Moses and all of teachers who
abused him and Mexican kids. However, when he saw his father forgiving a doctor who was the
main reason of Joseph's death, he quit his revenge and excused those teachers.
Victor devoted his life to write although he could not read well. After writing for 13 years and
receiving over 260 rejections, he finally got his first book published in 1973. His publicist requested
him to attend the California Association of Teachers of English Conference and be part of a
workshop. Unfortunately, when the planned keynoter for the convention was delayed and other
authors in attendance did not volunteer to give a speech, Victor said he could.
He had planned to talk about his book Macho, but when he faced the crowd of teachers, his
experience at school came back into his mind. He said he had faced a lot of abuse and his efforts to
overcome bad teaching and become a writer. He admired good teachers with all his heart but
criticized bad teachers. That presentation was not what the audience expected. Some reacted cruelly
and left, but most of audience stayed and listened to him. After that, Victor was invited to give more
speeches to let the audience know what worked in their education system.
In 1985, he found out that his two boys and he got dyslexia. Victor himself was so far of the chart

The Fourth Amendment Protects Citizens From Unreasonable...
The Fourth
Amendment protects citizens from unreasonable search and seizure of property. This ensures that
the government cannot take a private citizen's property without their consent, a warrant or probable
cause. The Fifth Amendment protects private property in two ways. The first, it ensures that a person
cannot be deprived of private property without due process of law. This means that if the
government is to seize private property they must compensate the owner for the property being
seized. The second way it protects a person's property is by limiting eminent domain, or the right of
the government to seize land for public use, with compensation. In order for a plot of land to be
seized it must meet the criteria of eminent domain. This means that the property being seized must
be for the benefit of the public and the owner of the property must receive full, market priced
compensation for the property. Some might argue that Khosla's land should be seized via eminent
domain; however, that would mean that: a. Khosla would need to be compensated more than $35
million dollars (2015 USD inflation calculated) in taxpayer money for the property and b. allowing
access to a beach does not necessarily benefit the public in the same way building a road, or an
irrigation system would. Critics of Khosla's actions typically claim he is in violation of the
California State Constitution and/or the California Coastal Act of 1976. Article X, Section 4 of the

The cash call and pizza issue with Sac county were the results of identity theft which is what I filed
with Folsom PD. The perp stole a box of check books from my mail box and cashed them at several
merchants around Folsom along with check cashing establishments. Round table and cash call took
it up in court which is why I had to file the police report. The issues have since been resolved and

Abundance Of Facilities For Outdoor Recreation And Leisure...
INTRODUCTION
This report examines the demographics of Ladera Ranch, California, analyzing population data to
prove that the community of Ladera Ranch is a good location to open a business. Based on this data,
the report will recommend the type of business that is best suited for the community. Ladera Ranch
is a census–designated place located in south Orange County, California ("Ladera Ranch", 2012);
nearby cities include Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, and Rancho Santa Margarita.
Construction of Ladera Ranch began in 1999 with the goal of creating a community where residents
enjoy recreational parks, clubhouses, shopping, and outdoor trails for joggers, hikers and bikers
("City Guide", 2014). The research compiled confirms that Ladera Ranch has an abundance of
facilities for outdoor recreation and leisure activities. However, based on its demographics, Ladera
Ranch residents would also benefit from having a local indoor Family Entertainment Center to
complement its existing infrastructure.
A team of five students from the BUAD 301 class at California State University, Fullerton
collaborated to gather data from a variety of resources for this report, analyze this data, and provide
recommendations for a future business venture. Sources such as the United States Census Bureau
were used to obtain demographic information for Ladera Ranch. All sources have been listed on the
reference page at the end of this report.
The report contains information for Ladera Ranch

Douglas Monroy's Thrown Among Strangers: The Making of...
Douglas Monroy's "Thrown Among Strangers: The Making of Mexican Culture in Frontier
California"
When Spaniards colonized California, they invaded the native Indians with foreign worldviews,
weapons, and diseases. The distinct regional culture that resulted from this union in turn found itself
invaded by Anglo–Americans with their peculiar social, legal, and economic ideals. Claiming that
differences among these cultures could not be reconciled, Douglas Monroy traces the historical
interaction among them in Thrown Among Strangers: The Making of Mexican Culture in Frontier
California. Beginning with the missions and ending in the late 1800s, he employs relations of
production and labor demands as a framework to explain the ... Show more content on

The Indians fused the material and spiritual into one existence and conceived time and life as
cyclical. Culture was reproduced over and over because ?the individual has had no freedom to act in
ways different from those of the ancestors.?(11) They are portrayed without history, and he later
concludes that ?entrance into history killed them?(282), implying that history is a European
phenomenon. Rice, on the other hand, states:
California?s Indians are popularly viewed as static remnants of ancient Stone–Age peoples. Nothing
could be farther from the truth. Before and after the advent of whites in their lands, native cultures
constantly changed and adapted to shifting social and ecological conditions. (Rice, 31)
Denying a group their own history subtly, yet dangerously, produces formation of the ?other.?
Monroy contradicts himself by writing, ?Unbeknownst to most Europeans, the natives they
encountered varied more widely that did the different European people themselves.?(6) They spoke
between sixty–four and eighty different languages (Rice, 32). Surely such a diverse group of people
could not have developed without changing and adapting to specific areas or circumstances.
The Spanish philosophy of colonization entailed military regulation and religious conversion at the
missions. According to Monroy, more women than men were attracted to the missions because they
were oppressed in Indian society. ?We see here how the power

Unmistakably, it is not clear whether some of the pagan rituals or the Chumash ideologies could
have potentially also been some of the factors leading to the insurrection. One such case in 1801, in
the middle of a string of attacks of pneumonia and pleurisy, had struck the neophytes at Santa
Barbara, and an Indian woman who had used Native American curer experienced a hallucinogenic–
induced vision.
As a result, the Indian woman in this altered state of mind had met the earth goddess Chupu.
Moreover, this Chupu had mentioned to the Indian woman that "all the baptized Indians would die
and only those would be spared who canceled their baptism by hand–washing with water known as
'tears of the Sun '(Mancall and Merrell 514). The news of this vision had spread fast among the
Native Americans. Another key point, Mancall and Merrell assert that Chumash from the islands to
the interior came to see this woman and propitiate Chupu (514). In addition, this could just be mere
speculation as to whether if the hallucinogenic–induced vision from the Indian woman could have
played a role in influencing the Chumash to rebel against their oppressors.
Similarly, other factors occurring during this time period appears to be purely coincidental. Authors,
Mancall and Merrell maintain that both and after the uprising, as one informant remembered, the
Indians of Santa Barbara would: secretly build temples of sticks and brush, on which they hung bits
of rag, cloth and

Chinese San Francisco And Sobel: An Analysis
Racism, the belief that one culture is superior to another by rite of birth or genetics, is at the heart of
most cultural skirmishes. It is seen in all of the cultural interchanges covered in the two books
Chinese San Francisco by Yong Chen, and The World They Made Together by Mechal Sobel. We
see racism in two categories: conscious and unconscious. Together the books cover the history of
multiple groups of people entering California. They talk about and the cultural interchanges that
occurred as the Spanish continued their quest for domination in the new world by bringing settlers to

In the end, the timing was just right for Anglos to create laws and enforce them against other
interested groups, and they achieved dominance while preserving their own culture. In the ensuing
centuries however, whites showed more interest in other cultures, and welcomed all kinds of ethnic
groups to become part of the United States of America. All of the groups in California helped to lay
the foundations for a mixed–race society, as all of them brought their own traditions and genetics
into the land. If the Spanish, Indians, Mexicans, Chinese and Anglos had known that what they
created is now a country full of diversity where all the residents are expected to treat one another as
equals, they probably would not understand. Their misunderstanding would stem from a truth,
however: it is always necessary to use a tiny bit of unconscious racism and keep a little heritage

La Brea Tar Pits
La Brea Tar Pits Introduction
The La Brea tar pits have been well–known for over a century. Before the rise of European settlers,
local Indian tribes used the tar to caulk canoes and waterproof tents. As the Industrial Revolution
took off the early 1900s, the tar pits attracted oil men, as asphaltum is often associated with
petroleum. Then,
[w]hen W. W. Orcutt, the original organizer of the geological department of Union Oil of California,
reexamined the area in 1901, he discovered "a vast mosaic of white bones" on the surface of a pool
of asphalt––the skeleton of a giant ground sloth, a huge armored animal that had been extinct for
millions of years. As paleontologists subsequently probed the La Brea tar pits, it became obvious ...

To avoid this, the saber–tooth and other La Brea predators would spend more time with their prey
animal carcasses, eating them more closely even at the risk of tooth damage.
It is also known that as the number of humans increased, the number of giant predators decreased.
While we still do not know for sure whether the humans hunted predators (presumably to eliminate
threats rather than as food), outcompeted them for prey, or whether there were climactic changes
that encouraged human settlement while limiting opportunities for big prey animals due to the
decline in vegetable matter, their food source, leading to a cascade of food source collapses.
Non–Megafauna
The shift in climate 10,000 years ago took a toll on many different types of animals that can now be
found in La Brea. Barlow (2000) notes that " only a half dozen species of Pleistocene dung beetles
were fortuitously preserved in the La Brea tar pits of California, along with the bones of ground
sloths, sabertooth cats, dire wolves, and carrion–feeding birds." (Barlow 2000, p. 209)
Interestingly, despite being from a far older group of species, insects such as beetles may be
considered more evolutionarily suited to their environments. Insects are more likely to exist today,
unchanged, than are any of the giant Ice Age"megafauna" they have been found alongside in the La
Brea tar pits.

Taylor Mountain Regional Park Topographic Analysis
Topographic Assessment of Taylor Mountain Regional Park The purpose of this assessment is to
understand all topographic factors concerning the past, present, and future of Taylor Mountain
Regional Park. The site is 4 acres in size and is located in Taylor Mountain Regional Park and Open
Space Preserve. The coordinates of the site, according to the USGS 1954 Santa Rosa Quadrangle
Map, are N 38 degrees 24 minutes and 30 seconds, W 122 degrees 41 minutes and 25 seconds
(Figure 2). The entrance to the site is located at the 1900 section of Kawana Terrace, adjacent to the
private continuation of Kawana Terrace in Santa Rosa California 95407 in the United States. The

Through the northwestern portion of the site a manmade walking path has been established for
recreation purposes adjacent to the lowest point of the meadow. Despite there being a drainage
culvert for carrying rainwater under the pathway, there is noticeable erosion of the path itself,
suggesting that with ample rainfall such a culvert is insufficient, allowing rainwater to flow up and
over the path (Figure 8). This also draws into question the stability of the local area in terms of
landslides and mass wasting. Because the slope is greater than 25% it is very likely that mass
wasting occurs in the area. Slopes in the surrounding area are not steep enough for rock falls but
with consistent heavy rainfall a mudslide of clay and rock is possible, which could threaten
recreational users of the park. Because Taylor Mountain is a public open space preserve there is
cause for concern when designing/building structures associated with recreational use. Precautions
must be taken when building to avoid hazards of mass wasting and erosion. However, due to the
nature of the preserve it is highly unlikely that any type of large structure or septic system would be
permitted. Noise pollution in this area is very mild with only the occasional truck being heard on the
101 highway to the west. Unfortunately, a new fire station is to be built within .6 miles and some
local fauna may become disturbed by the wail of sirens. Be advised that a sound barrier should be
constructed around the fire station in order to minimize disturbance of wildlife. One important note
is that it was recommended in a biotic assessment that, "one of the proposed trails be removed from
the plan (on Taylor Mountain) to avoid impacts to deer in the oak woodland, and that another be
realigned to avoid wetlands" (Waaland, pg.1). In doing so further disruption of wildlife habitat can

College Admissions Essay: An Application To My High School...
My story began years ago, when I was born, in December of 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia at Piedmont
Hospital. From there, I grew up in a fairly suburban area, and after a few moves, I began attending
E.W. Oliver Elementary and later M.L.K. Elementary school. I would often travel back and forth,
between my home here and my family in California. Growing up in contact with such a diverse
community equipped me with many things in life, such as my unexpected temporary move to
California my 11th grade year of high school. Having attended Charles R. Drew High School, a
predominantly African American high school, transferring to Rancho Dominguez, a predominantly
Hispanic high school in Long Beach, California, would have proved a bit of a cultural shock if not
for my previous acclimation to different cultures, which came from my earlier travels. ... Show more

Drew, where I eventually graduated. Upon graduation, I decided to take one last family vacation to
California for the summer. During the summer, I often found myself reminiscing the many things I'd
accomplished during my high school career. I'd maintained a schedule riddled with AP classes,
while also balancing the requirements of participating in both my school auxiliary team and
symphonic orchestra. It was because of this balance that I managed to graduate with distinction in
the arts! I was very proud of myself.
It was during this same summer that I made my final decision as to the college I would look forward
to attending in the fall: Clayton State. After making this pivotal decision, I ended my vacation early
and flew home to prep. I had realized I had quite a year ahead of me, and hoped to have many more

The Golden State
California, nicknamed the Golden State, has attracted many an immigrant through the years. From
the migrations of peoples thousands of years ago that led to the establishment of the many Native
American tribes that populated the land, to the Spanish and Americans in later centuries, one
wonders what attracted all to the farthest frontier, the unsettled west coast. That is until you delve
deeper into what the land had to offer as an economic source. The year 1769 saw Gaspar de Portola
and Father Saint Junípero Serra leading the first permanent European settlers to California. Before
the end of the century, missions were established along the coast and towns were established,
especially Los Angeles in 1781. The establishment of missions and towns began economic growth
based on agricultural production and Native American labor that would soon lead to cities, ranches
and local owners under Mexican occupation taking the same advantage to produce locally until the
United States brought a wave of new settlement and industrial ideas that would sweep local trade
and production into a new era of transcontinental economic growth, transportation and financial
gains.
In 1542, Juan Cabrillo made his way up what the coast of what the Spanish called Alta California
from the newly conquered Spanish province of Mexico in search of gold, but he only found Native
Americans living on land that consisted of thousands of square miles of fertile valleys, high
mountains, freshwater lakes, and

The Anglo-American Period
Anglo–American Period (1846 to Present)
California was invaded by United States troops during the Mexican–American War of 1846 to 1848.
The acquisition of strategic Pacific ports and California land was one of the principal objectives of
the war (Price 1967). At the time, the inhabitants of California were practically defenseless, and they
quickly surrendered to the United States Navy in July of 1847 (Bancroft 1886).
The cattle ranchers of the "counties" of southern California had prospered during the cattle boom of
the early 1850s/ They were able to "reap windfall profit... pay taxes and lawyer's bills... and
generally live according to custom" (Pitt 1966). However, cattle ranching soon declined, which

Everything can change with just one blink of the eye. The things you loved the most are gone, and
there is nothing you can do about it. This is what Esperanza experiences in "Esperanza Rising" by
Pam Munoz Ryan (copyright 2000, 253 pages). The big idea is learning to adjust and endure in the
United States as a farm worker.
The main character is Esperanza and what she wants is for her mom to get better from her sickness.
This story takes place in El Rancho de las Rosas and The San Joaquin Valley through 1924–1931.
The central problem was revealed when a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and her mom to flee to
California. The plot connects with the characters because some of Esperanza's servants/friends were

Esperanza Rising Character Analysis
Everybody has difficulties in their lives that change them in some way, shape, or form. When a
person experiences these difficulties; It can cause them to shift their outlook on certain things and/or
cause changes in character. This is certainly the case when it comes to Esperanza Ortega. She is the
main character in Esperanza Rising. Esperanza 13 years old and lives in El Rancho de las Rosas.
She is the only daughter of a very wealthy rancher. Esperanza is forced to leave her perfect life due
to the murder of her father. She comes to California and becomes a peasant worker. This journey
causes Esperanza to change in many different ways.
The first way that Esperanza changes involves the change of her attitude. She is initially very selfish
and quite arrogant. The transition that she goes through ends up causing her to be more of a kind
person. She is also very generous to everyone around. Before she made this change, her selfishness
was very obvious. This was evident when she was traveling to California with her mother. She did
not want to be in the cheap section of the train where peasants travel. Esperanza goes on to say, "We
cannot travel in this car." (Munoz Ryan) She really does come off quite arrogant. Her selfishness is
also very evident when she is getting on the train. Esperanza is holding her doll and a girl named
Mona, daughter of a peasant, wants to hold her doll. She would not even allow the girl to touch the
doll. Esperanza says to her mother, "Mama she is

Reflective Essay On Race And Racism
When were you first aware of yourself as a member of a particular racial group? I believe I was first
aware when I was eight years old. Moving from Pasadena, California around a diverse group of
people to Rancho Cucamonga, California around nothing but white people. Growing up in church
and living across the street from a church in Rancho Cucamonga and unable to attend because on
Friday nights the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) met there, with their white sheets over their heads. Burning
crosses on the neighbor's lawn until they finally moved out. Also a year before Alex Haley release

weeks straight. What an interesting time in my life.
When were you first aware of people of other races? I believe it was again the same time when I was
eight years old. When we lived in Pasadena our neighbors were Hispanic and we had two older
white ladies that live across the street that we were always over their houses. You never saw color on
friendship and love.
What is one significant event in your life related to race and racism? When I think about this
question it is so many for me, but I will narrow it down to the time when I first internalized the
injustice. The significant one that stand out to me was when I graduated from Sawyer Business

Mission and Mexican Period Essay

  • 1. Mission And Mexican Period Essay The Mission and Mexican period is a difficult topic for fourth grade students to understand and teachers to teach. But, one way I can teach students about the mission system and Mexican period is through lecture and an interactive activity, like a play. Because by providing students with lectures and illustrations, students can see and understand for themselves the different changes that occurred through these periods and feel the impact of these changes through acting in a play. Before, teaching students about the mission and Mexican period, I believe it is important to teach students about California history before the arrival of the Spanish. I will teach the students about California life before the Spanish through a lecture and providing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Informing the students the Spanish arrived to California to build missions and introduce a new religion, converting Native Americans into Catholics. Showing all the 21 missions in California and informing the students, "The missions became the largest and most productive Spanish communities in California...the early missions were tiny, tenuous settlements marked by stick, mud, marginal agriculture and small neophyte populations" (Eden, 91), and providing illustrations of the missions and Spanish life. Students will then compare and contrast California before the Spanish and the mission period. Analyzing the changes California went through before and during mission period. After introducing the mission system, I will briefly explain the short Mexican period by explaining how most California cities and streets received their names. For example, I will ask the students, " Has anyone walked on or drove by Sepulveda Blvd or Rancho Palos Verdes"? and "Does anyone know how these streets received their names"? Introducing them to the history of rancho and pueblo society during the Mexican Period in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. San Joaqu??n County Road Research Paper The ease with which Didion's 1968 stranger could tour the Valley would have astonished its residents sixty years earlier. The township's earliest "roads" favored the wildlife tracks and native trails that paralleled the river and crossed the plain. The 1908 roads were little better than those first paths–perhaps wider as teamsters strove to keep their wagons out of the deep ruts, but more pitted and rougher. In an era when no driver could call any San Joaquín County road "good," the county's residents widely recognized Tulare Township's roads as the region's worst. Founded by urban bicyclists on the East Coast, the Good Roads Movement had, by the 1900s, spread to rural California. In Northern California, agricultural interests and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here, where INTERSTATE 205 crosses California Avenue and Tom Paine Slough, the Stockton– Oakland Stage Road turned west and traced–although slightly more north–the modern Interstate highway's rough path toward Bethany. Near Bethany, where Grant Line Road diverges from the Byron Highway today, the original dirt path forked. The left–hand fork, at first the popular trail, turned south toward Corral Hollow (modern San José Road takes its name from this fork). The center fork headed southwest to reach Middle Pass [Patterson Pass]. When the stage road took form soon after the Gold Rush, travelers chose the right–hand fork that scaled Livermore's Pass [Altamont Pass]. Now, Grant Line Road between Bryon Highway and Altamont Pass Road follows this path's bearing. The Rancho el Pescadero survey (1861) and patent (1865) brought changes to the West Side Road. The grant's proprietors, eager to evict squatters from their land, erected a fourteen–mile fence along the rancho's freshly surveyed borders in 1866. Once Generals Frémont and Naglee enclosed the grant, the stage road traced the angled seam between the two Rancho el Pescadero land grants. Travelers have used this alignment continuously–calling it the Stockton–Oakland Stage Road, Banta Road, the West Side Road, the LINCOLN HIGHWAY, US HIGHWAY 50, and INTERSTATE 5–for over 150 years. • 5. John Malquist Research Paper The Researcher, The Mentor, The Galvanizer Sherwin John Carlquist is a botanist and a photographer who understood the basic principles of wood anatomy and evolution through his research in Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (Sherwin, (a)). Sherwin's studies of dicotyledonous wood evolution has directed him to pursue understanding the evolutionary patterns of islands (Edward & Roy, 1997). This was the turning point where Sherwin's work finally been acknowledged after thirty long years, on 1991. He had a grand total of 24 principles governing long–distance dispersal and evolution on islands acknowledged by other botanists (CA). Early Days Sherwin John Carlquist was born on July 7th, 1930 in Los Angeles, son of Robert William and Helen (Bauer) Carlquist (prabook). At the age of 22, Sherwin received his undergraduate bachelor degree at University of California, then decided to do a PHD on philosophy, and graduated at 1956. While Sherwin was taking on his PHD, at the last year, 1955 – 1956, Sherwin was awarded a postdoctoral study from Harvard University, there were only Three NSF fellowships during graduate and postdoctoral years (Sherwin, (a)). • 7. Anglo American History Maressi Falcon The history of the New World, as we know it now, is vast, rich and told in multiple perceptions. For the Anglos, it was Manifest Destiny in the 1840s that drove these settlers to further expand from the original thirteen colonies they first inhabited, this ideology drove them west "to overtake [the Spanish and Natives] was no crime for Anglo American were required to follow God's injunction to make the land fruitful, prosper economically and attain their divinely appointed calling" to Christianize, civilize and save souls (Almaguer, 52). For the Spanish, the New World was a world they always knew living in their own territory humbly and fruitfully. Finally, to the original inhabitants, the New World was always their world but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Almaguer, "nineteenth–century relations between Mexicans and Anglos in California were powerfully determined by class division within the two populations, divisions that led to the divergent historical experiences for the Mexican working class and the ranchero elite" (45). The biggest division of class happened during the Mexican and Spanish periods, Spanish and Mexican governments issued a total of twenty land grants of "415,959 acre of land and represented 38.6 percent of the total land area in the [Santa Barbara County]" to families such as "Juan Camarillo, Isabel Yorba, Jose Arnaz, Juan Sanchez, and the de la Guerra brothers" who will later become "'gente de razons,'" the largest landholders (Almaguer 76–77). What this 1860s act did, was separate the Mexican class as a whole, if you were a gente de razon, you were Rancho elite, you were royals of the town, dominating everything from economics and agriculture to political and social affairs. If you were not Rancho elite, you were "rancheros and farmers with small land holdings, skilled rancho laborers and foremen, artisans in the Mexican pueblos", or as they were often referred, "mestizos (mixed racial ancestry) and was typically viewed as "'middle class'" by travelers visiting California during the Mexican period" (Almaguer, 48). Now with this vision in mind it is not hard to see how different of an experience the Spanish had when the Anglos came because of their already dominant positions in life creating this image of ... • 9. Gerald Ford Biography Following his defeat in the 1976 presidential election, Gerald Ford retired to Rancho Mirage, California. Thereafter, Ford appeared frequently in public as a speaker, lecturing for private audiences and on university campuses. In his post–presidential years, Ford wrote a number of books, including an account of his presidency, A Time to Heal (1979), and Humor and the Presidency (1987). Always very athletic, Ford continued to enjoy the game of golf. However, Ford's exit from Washington did not immediately end his political ambitions. He surprised most observers when he entered into discussions with Ronald Reagan in 1980 about running on the Republican ticket with the former governor of California. However, Ford took the offer to the media (specifically to CBS anchor Walter Cronkite in a convention interview); feeling betrayed, an angry Reagan withdrew the offer, which ultimately went to George H.W. Bush. During the 1980s and 1990s, Ford emerged as an elder statesman in the Republican Party. Likewise, Ford wrote extensively on domestic and foreign policy issues of the day. He also served on a number of corporate boards and commissions, including a stint as co–chair of The National Commission on Federal Election Reform in 2001. ... Unfortunately, when the planned keynoter for the convention was delayed and other authors in attendance did not volunteer to give a speech, Victor said he could. He had planned to talk about his book Macho, but when he faced the crowd of teachers, his experience at school came back into his mind. • 17. The Fourth Amendment Protects Citizens From Unreasonable... The Fourth Amendment protects citizens from unreasonable search and seizure of property. This ensures that the government cannot take a private citizen's property without their consent, a warrant or probable cause. The Fifth Amendment protects private property in two ways. The first, it ensures that a person cannot be deprived of private property without due process of law. This means that if the government is to seize private property they must compensate the owner for the property being seized. The second way it protects a person's property is by limiting eminent domain, or the right of the government to seize land for public use, with compensation. In order for a plot of land to be seized it must meet the criteria of eminent domain. This means that the property being seized must be for the benefit of the public and the owner of the property must receive full, market priced compensation for the property. Some might argue that Khosla's land should be seized via eminent domain; however, that would mean that: a. Khosla would need to be compensated more than $35 million dollars (2015 USD inflation calculated) in taxpayer money for the property and b. allowing access to a beach does not necessarily benefit the public in the same way building a road, or an irrigation system would. Critics of Khosla's actions typically claim he is in violation of the California State Constitution and/or the California Coastal Act of 1976. Article X, Section 4 of the ... • 23. Abundance Of Facilities For Outdoor Recreation And Leisure... INTRODUCTION This report examines the demographics of Ladera Ranch, California, analyzing population data to prove that the community of Ladera Ranch is a good location to open a business. Based on this data, the report will recommend the type of business that is best suited for the community. Ladera Ranch is a census–designated place located in south Orange County, California ("Ladera Ranch", 2012); nearby cities include Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, and Rancho Santa Margarita. Construction of Ladera Ranch began in 1999 with the goal of creating a community where residents enjoy recreational parks, clubhouses, shopping, and outdoor trails for joggers, hikers and bikers ("City Guide", 2014). The research compiled confirms that Ladera Ranch has an abundance of facilities for outdoor recreation and leisure activities. However, based on its demographics, Ladera Ranch residents would also benefit from having a local indoor Family Entertainment Center to complement its existing infrastructure. A team of five students from the BUAD 301 class at California State University, Fullerton collaborated to gather data from a variety of resources for this report, analyze this data, and provide recommendations for a future business venture. Sources such as the United States Census Bureau were used to obtain demographic information for Ladera Ranch. All sources have been listed on the reference page at the end of this report. Douglas Monroy's "Thrown Among Strangers: The Making of Mexican Culture in Frontier California" When Spaniards colonized California, they invaded the native Indians with foreign worldviews, weapons, and diseases. The distinct regional culture that resulted from this union in turn found itself invaded by Anglo–Americans with their peculiar social, legal, and economic ideals. Claiming that differences among these cultures could not be reconciled, Douglas Monroy traces the historical interaction among them in Thrown Among Strangers: The Making of Mexican Culture in Frontier California. Rice, on the other hand, states: California?s Indians are popularly viewed as static remnants of ancient Stone–Age peoples. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Before and after the advent of whites in their lands, native cultures constantly changed and adapted to shifting social and ecological conditions. Monroy contradicts himself by writing, ?Unbeknownst to most Europeans, the natives they encountered varied more widely that did the different European people themselves.?(6) They spoke between sixty–four and eighty different languages (Rice, 32). Surely such a diverse group of people could not have developed without changing and adapting to specific areas or circumstances. The Spanish philosophy of colonization entailed military regulation and religious conversion at the missions. Accordingly, the confessional aids focused scrupulous interest on the transgressions of the sixth and ninth commandments (sins of impurity, including adultery, fornication, homosexuality, masturbation, and lust). Unmistakably, it is not clear whether some of the pagan rituals or the Chumash ideologies could have potentially also been some of the factors leading to the insurrection. One such case in 1801, in the middle of a string of attacks of pneumonia and pleurisy, had struck the neophytes at Santa Barbara, and an Indian woman who had used Native American curer experienced a hallucinogenic– induced vision. As a result, the Indian woman in this altered state of mind had met the earth goddess Chupu. Moreover, this Chupu had mentioned to the Indian woman that "all the baptized Indians would die and only those would be spared who canceled their baptism by hand–washing with water known as 'tears of the Sun '(Mancall and Merrell 514). The news of this vision had spread fast among the Native Americans. Another key point, Mancall and Merrell assert that Chumash from the islands to the interior came to see this woman and propitiate Chupu (514). In addition, this could just be mere speculation as to whether if the hallucinogenic–induced vision from the Indian woman could have played a role in influencing the Chumash to rebel against their oppressors. Similarly, other factors occurring during this time period appears to be purely coincidental. Authors, Mancall and Merrell maintain that both and after the uprising, as one informant remembered, the Indians of Santa Barbara would: secretly build temples of sticks and brush, on which they hung bits of rag, cloth and ... It is seen in all of the cultural interchanges covered in the two books Chinese San Francisco by Yong Chen, and The World They Made Together by Mechal Sobel. We see racism in two categories: conscious and unconscious. Together the books cover the history of multiple groups of people entering California. All of the groups in California helped to lay the foundations for a mixed–race society, as all of them brought their own traditions and genetics into the land. If the Spanish, Indians, Mexicans, Chinese and Anglos had known that what they created is now a country full of diversity where all the residents are expected to treat one another as equals, they probably would not understand. Before the rise of European settlers, local Indian tribes used the tar to caulk canoes and waterproof tents. As the Industrial Revolution took off the early 1900s, the tar pits attracted oil men, as asphaltum is often associated with petroleum. Then, [w]hen W. W. Orcutt, the original organizer of the geological department of Union Oil of California, reexamined the area in 1901, he discovered "a vast mosaic of white bones" on the surface of a pool of asphalt––the skeleton of a giant ground sloth, a huge armored animal that had been extinct for millions of years. To avoid this, the saber–tooth and other La Brea predators would spend more time with their prey animal carcasses, eating them more closely even at the risk of tooth damage. It is also known that as the number of humans increased, the number of giant predators decreased. While we still do not know for sure whether the humans hunted predators (presumably to eliminate threats rather than as food), outcompeted them for prey, or whether there were climactic changes that encouraged human settlement while limiting opportunities for big prey animals due to the decline in vegetable matter, their food source, leading to a cascade of food source collapses. Through the northwestern portion of the site a manmade walking path has been established for recreation purposes adjacent to the lowest point of the meadow. Despite there being a drainage culvert for carrying rainwater under the pathway, there is noticeable erosion of the path itself, suggesting that with ample rainfall such a culvert is insufficient, allowing rainwater to flow up and over the path (Figure 8). This also draws into question the stability of the local area in terms of landslides and mass wasting. Because the slope is greater than 25% it is very likely that mass wasting occurs in the area. Slopes in the surrounding area are not steep enough for rock falls but with consistent heavy rainfall a mudslide of clay and rock is possible, which could threaten recreational users of the park. Because Taylor Mountain is a public open space preserve there is cause for concern when designing/building structures associated with recreational use. Precautions must be taken when building to avoid hazards of mass wasting and erosion. However, due to the nature of the preserve it is highly unlikely that any type of large structure or septic system would be permitted. Noise pollution in this area is very mild with only the occasional truck being heard on the 101 highway to the west. Unfortunately, a new fire station is to be built within .6 miles and some local fauna may become disturbed by the wail of sirens. Be advised that a sound barrier should be constructed around the fire station in order to minimize disturbance of wildlife. From the migrations of peoples thousands of years ago that led to the establishment of the many Native American tribes that populated the land, to the Spanish and Americans in later centuries, one wonders what attracted all to the farthest frontier, the unsettled west coast. That is until you delve deeper into what the land had to offer as an economic source. The year 1769 saw Gaspar de Portola and Father Saint Junípero Serra leading the first permanent European settlers to California. Before the end of the century, missions were established along the coast and towns were established, especially Los Angeles in 1781. The establishment of missions and towns began economic growth based on agricultural production and Native American labor that would soon lead to cities, ranches and local owners under Mexican occupation taking the same advantage to produce locally until the United States brought a wave of new settlement and industrial ideas that would sweep local trade and production into a new era of transcontinental economic growth, transportation and financial gains.
