Marion Barry Scandal Report
A politician leads every country in the world. Whether their people chose them or self instated, they are the engines that keep governments going. In an
ideal world, every politician would be an exemplary human being, with so much power its important to be able to trust those who wield it.
Regrettably, they are not always perfect people. There have been hundreds of scandals involving politicians all over the world, some more well
known than others. In todays day and age living in such a technologically connected era, political scandals are coming to light more now than ever.
With social media everywhere and with hundreds of people literally walking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After he served his time, Barry checked himself into Skinner Farm rehab facility. He realized that the sting operation saved his life from the addiction
that would have resulted in his untimely death. Many people didn't believe he could battle both his addictions and serve the people of Washington DC,
while some of his close associates knew that politics was all he needed to get his mind off of drugs. Marion also did a few things differently than
other politicians when confronted with scandal. Once caught on camera, he did some things differently than Rob Ford did. He did not deny any
involvement or wrong doing, his lawyer even stated during the trial that Barry did admit to having a drug problem. Rather, Barry often criticized
the government, claiming they set him up or tried to make him look bad. Barry apologized, served his time, went to rehab for "alchohal", and faced
the reality of the situation. Where most politicians caught in scandal avoid the press, Barry used it as an ego boost, wanting them to follow and
watch him so that he could prove to DC that he was coming back and meant business. I think that this actually helped him because the public
believed that he was clear and truthful. Using the campaign slogan " He may not be the perfect man, but he's perfect for DC" was also a very
strategic move as it shows he's not running from his past, but hopes to make up for

The Bush, An American Politician And Politician
Jeb Bush, (John Ellis Bush) born February 11, 1953 in Midland, Texas, is an American businessman and politician. He served as the Governor of
Florida from 1999 to 2007 and is currently a candidate in the U.S. Presidential race. Bush, coming from a very well–known and influential political
family, tries to separate himself from the Bush name and his father's and brother's previous actions in office. He is a Catholic and cites his wife
Columba as instrumental in his success in both his political and business adventures, and has three kids and several grandchildren. Favorers of his
father and brother are likely to vote for Jeb, however neither have had overwhelmingly high ratings. Bush's background as white, Christian male like the

Bush has said that he "hates being a frontrunner" and feel as if he is in the lead, he doesn't feel like he is truly working hard. He has stated that he
much rather prefers a lower rating so that he can challenge himself and show his followers that he is hardworking. Bush started out with the second
highest approval rating after the first Republican presidential debate, but that rate has steadily declined with the succeeding debates. Bush's arguments
with Rubio and Trump seemed to upset the public, and now holds a very low approval rate as a result.
From the moment Bush announced his candidacy for president, Super PACS and individual contributors were pouring millions and millions of dollars
into his campaign budget. Right to Rise USA, a nonprofit Super PAC created byJeb Bush is an instrumental organization aimed to fund Bush's
campaign and staffers. According to USNews.com, Right to Rise USA is said to spend about 100 million dollars on the Jeb Bush 2016 presidential
campaign. This Super PAC is the biggest vendor in size and scope, and is responsible for massive amounts of obscure spending. The Citizens United vs.
FEC supreme court decision is the main culprit to this PAC's unrestricted contribution limits, leaving Bush with an unfair advantage. Even though the
polls are not in favor of him, it is reported that Bush's budget can sustain him in the running until the end. Furthermore, Jeb not only depends on
political action committees to fund his campaign,

Essay about Celebrity Activists in Contemporary Society
Celebrity Activists in Contemporary Society

According to the book Celebrity Politics, approximately 10 percent of Americans get national political news from nightly entertainment shows such as
the Tonight Show. For Americans under 30, the number is nearly five times as many (Orman and West 100). Citizens are looking to be entertained
rather than simply educated by the nightly news. As David Schultz aptly put it, " The new media cover politics, but only politics as it entertains, in part,
because the audience the new media attract is a less politically interested audience than traditional news audiences" (20). The fact is that this American
audience is less interested in hard news and more interested in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most notable case of a politician using celebrity endorsers is that of former President Ronald Reagan, a former B–list actor himself. Some of his
supporters in 1980 included James Cagney, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Hoagy Carmichael (West and Orman 38).
The growing connection between politics and Hollywood has happened for a number of reasons, in a somewhat cyclical fashion. Politicians need
Hollywood stars to support their campaigns because celebrities are useful in fundraising attempts and recognition. They have the advantages of fame,
wealth, and can easily command press attention. In return, celebrities endorse candidates whose policies are beneficial to their industry. For example,
while Clinton was in office he argued for "industry self–regulation and a television rating system, as opposed to formal government regulation"
(Ormand and West 38). For this and other reasons, Hollywood stars donated large sums of money to Democratic candidates in return. In 2000,
Hollywood contributed $20 million to Democrats as opposed to the $13 million that was contributed to the less Hollywood–friendly Republican party
(Ormand and West 40).
This is the new "celebritized" (Combs 123) political culture in which advocacy organizations must function. Because the media is so inundated with

How Political Leaders Create Real Change
How do political leaders create real change in today 's political climate? Equally as important how can political leaders enact solutions in today 's
hyper political world where constructive debate and solutions are so hard to achieve? Is there such a leader who can navigate the polarizing
political lands of current day america, and be an effective leader? In Freshman Congressman Scott Taylor of Virginia 's second district, we may have

Corruption Is A Universal One
The problem with corruption is a universal one, but this challenge is particularly egregious in new and developing democracies. Brazil's troubles with
corruption stem from far before democratization in the 1980s. From the military takeover and the rule of the bureaucratic authoritarian regime to the
present day, this nation has struggled with nepotism, clientism, and favoritism as well as a slew of other corrupt practices. The state, federal, and
municipal levels of government have all been plagued with corruption scandals. From the impeachment of President Fernando Collor to the MensalГЈo
scandal, the Brazilian government has been in a constant struggle to quell its problems with corruption and economic distress. In this paper I will
explain how politicians engage in corruption at the municipal level and the effects their actions can have on the nation. To do this, I will analyze the
underlying causes of corruption in Brazil's municipalities (namely Rio de Janeiro and SГЈo Paulo) and how these causes are acted on. Finally, I will
detail the repercussions of these actions, and what Brazil can do (and to some degree has done) to solve this issue.
To understand how corruption occurs and what is effects are, the underlying causes of corruption must be understood first. Both systematic factors as
well as traditional and societal expectations have made corruption possible in Brazil. Why politicians can and do abuse their power can give much
needed insight in understanding the most

Handwritten Letter Chapter Summary
In February of 2010, Omar Ahmad (former mayor of San Carlos, California) spoke to a crowd in Long Beach, California discussing the importance of
a handwritten letter. His main point is that "we live in a digital world... but handwritten letters actually work". When communicating with a political
figure, nothing is stronger than a handwritten letter. Mr. Ahmad gives a four step list on how to efficiently write a letter, paragraph by paragraph. He
also uses his knowledge gained from his time working for the Discovery Channel to make comparisons between political figures and wild animals.
Paragraph one, of a handwritten letter, must display the writer's appreciation for the politicians character or accomplishments, Mr. Ahmad states "when

$3.5 million to a surplus of $400,000 by the end of his term in office. ("Omar Ahmad, mayor of San Carlos, dies at 46") Mr. Ahmad was a unique and

Social Media, Though Relatively New,Is A Growing Part Of
Social media, though relatively new, is a growing part of everyday life. The question one must ask is: what impact does this form of communication
have on global politics? Whereas social media is not always a reliable source, it serves to engage the global population in a casual manner, weaving
politics into the fabric of everyday life. Social media influences not only the mundane, daily political ongoings from country to country but also
political movements and revolutions. However, one must remain wary, as that this form of media is heavily biased, which can present issues for a less
informed audience.
Social media presents a new method of communication in which the modern citizen may participate in informal political debate, ... Show more content

While these types of political monologues may still take place on social media, they are not the only kind of discussion and, generally, leave room for
debate between parties.
With these everyday discussions surrounding politics comes influence from the general public social media provides a space to "enable a more efficient
information exchange and a more egalitarian structure of communication between politicians and citizens", rather than relying exclusively on formal
methods of communication. New technological advancements, particularly in social media, have virtually severed the gap between politicians and the
public, resulting in a changing political rhetoric from what was previously considered the norm. Much of a politician's campaign and publicity now
takes place online through likes, tweets, and reposts. In this fashion, Israel held their general elections in March of 2015, which the right–wing party
won. Throughout the electoral campaign "right–wing politicians exhibited higher levels of activity" on social media platforms compared to the centre
or left–wing parties. While left–wing supporters were highly active online, it was not through the support of their preferred candidates. What was most
commonly shared by those against the right–wing party were "posts, videos, and images attacking the incumbent right–wing Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu, who eventually won". Despite being vehemently against Netanyahu and showing this through users' online

The Pros And Cons Of Social Penetration
Introduction
This community is sick of the government, how it governs the country, how it takes the issues and problems for granted, how the opportunist
politicians take away people's penny, and there's a lot more. Some express their dismay, disgust, and supplications through huge signs and shouts in
front of government offices, some through articles and blogs, and some are through songs. "Upuan " sang by Aristotle Pollisco also known as Gloc 9 ,
one of the most successful hip–hop artists in the Philippines, featuring Jeazell Grutas, female vocalist of the rock band Zelle , shows the true status of
the society.
The lyrics on the first part are describing the deaf and blind politicians to pay attention, to see and hear the people's plea.
The rap part of the song tells about how comfortable and envying lives of the politicians are compare to the status of most of the people in the society.

Social Penetration according to the book of Em Griffin is the process of developing deeper intimacy with another person through mutual self–disclosure
and other forms of vulnerability. Moreover, self–disclosure is the voluntary sharing of personal history, preference, attitudes, feelings, values, secrets
with another person. It can also be defined as transparency.Social Psychologists Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor propounded the Social Penetration
Theory that explains how to develop a relational closeness to another person.
Using this theory to critique the music video of our group using the song upuan, in order for those who are seated on the Upuan or the politicians as

Salman Ahmed Rushdie is an eminent postcolonial diasporic writer of Indian origin. He was born in a Muslim family in 1947, the year India became

Rushdie gives the description the first imaginary country in which the old man Shakeel lives along with his three daughters named Chunee, Munee
and Bunee in a mansion. The house located in a town called Q was "positioned beside an open maiden, and it was equidistant from the bazaar and the
Cantt." (12) The Old Shakil keeps his daughters alienated from the rest of the world in the old mansion so as to keep them away from the influence of
the white men (colonizers). He closed the mansion to avoid any interaction with the outside world of colonizers. After the death of their father, the
daughters continue to remain alienated from the world, but as time passes they get rid off their parental subjugation and get fascinated by the
colonizers. They organize a party in which they invite the members of the white community and the few "non–white guests–local zamindars and their
wives."(16). But the non white guests abandoned "the sisters to the colonial authorities."(ibid) The invitation extended by the Shakil sisters can be
termed as sudden infatuation of the three sisters towards the outside colourful world. Rushdie through the above description has tried to depict the
culture of the Pakistani society which wants the women of Pakistan to be confined to four walls of the house. Rushdie shows how one of the Shakil

Informative Essay On Social Media
Ranjan Maskey Prof.
Sherry Sherafin GOVT–2305–71603 October 30, 2017 Social Media and the USA Presidency Social media has become a very important part of our
lifestyle. It is a platform where people can share anything they want: their personal life, social life, beliefs, thoughts, political agendas, etc. social
medias like Facebook and Twitter have now become one of the main means of communication for the people around the world. Hence, it is no
surprise that the political leaders around the world also use these social media platforms to communicate with their citizens. President Donald Trump
is a perfect example of a political leader who uses social media to share his thoughts to the people around the world. In fact, Twitter and Facebook is
the first place where people go to get information or news from the president.
During the presidential election of 2017, the president and the vice–president of the United States used these media platform to reach out to the
people. His saying "Believe in yourselves. Believe in your future. And believe, once more, in America" (Trump, 1) is very popular. It is also one of
the reasons why people knew more about them which helped him to get the votes he needed to win the election. Although it is not a preferred method
for a politician, it has become very popular in our society because of which the politicians cannot be separated from social media. In the past, the

The Politics Of The United States
Our politicians are being bribed to influence what laws are being made in this country at a federal level. Due to the current situation in American
politics corruption has become an accepted form of conducting business in the political world. "Since the implication of citizen's united in 2010 we
have seen a dramatic turn in the direction of politics" (Silver). This is because now, any donor is allowed to contribute undisclosed amounts to any
political campaign. The argument against this is that the politician running the campaign will feel the need to return the favor to the donor once they
are in office. Statistics show this to be true. According to a twenty–year study done by Northwestern University this is true, in fact the study found that
"only the top ten percent of earners in America are represented adequately by congress" (Silver). The citizen's united case was a case that reached the
Supreme Court in 2010. It stated that "any corporation or individual could donate any amount of money, undisclosed, to the campaign of their
choosing" (Silver). The argument on this side was that a donor has the right to donate any amount of money due to freedom of speech. However, not
everybody has millions of dollars to contribute, so not everybody has equal speech under this ruling. The unequal representation of people in this
country affects each of us because not everyone gets a say. This leads to the population with less income having a disadvantage in the political
atmosphere as

Politicians and Poachers
In his book Politicians and Poachers, Charles Gibson analyzes the origins and effects of governmental "institutions" on Zambian wildlife policy.
Keeping in mind his definition of what an institution is– it's origins, what it does, and what it represents– one can apply his analysis to the nature of
tourism. When so much of the tourist industry relies on what is seen as "authentic" and how it is determined, it is important to focus on how various
institutions shape Western and local thought.
Charles Gibson puts forth a definition of "institutions", on which he bases his argument about Zambian wildlife policy. He says that, essentially, they
are the result of "voluntary exchanges between relatively equal actors who are seeking mutually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Government institutions can become extremely unpopular by making decisions that benefit them, but in turn ignore or even harm local
communities. As in wildlife policy, the "state/society" approach can be applied to tourism because it calls for the inclusion of "other members of
society in its treatment" of issues (Gibson 8). Without the consultation of communities, truly beneficial legislation can never be passed, as the central
government will never be made aware of both the nuanced or egregious problems faced at a more local level. This lack of involvement harbors
feelings of resentment among locals. According to Gibson, in parts of Zambia " arrests made by wildlife officers were the only direct contact that
locals had with government" (Gibson 28). Negative reinforcement of laws, especially when it is the only kind of enforcement, makes tensions
inevitable. Locals are likely to be put off by any government involvement, like voting or running for office if possible, when their experience with it is
entirely negative. Resistance to laws becomes prevalent, and neither the state nor the local communities benefit. A reaction like this is not exclusive to
wildlife policy. Laws concerning tourism can, and often are, faced with the same sort of local resistance, since community involvement is minimal to
nonexistent in many places. Local

Richard is clearly a villain–he declares outright in his very first speech that he intends to stop at nothing to achieve his immoral desires. "I am

with him, or at least to be impressed with him. A successfulpolitician needs to be attractive to others and it can be said that Richard is, as shown
throughout the whole play although not so much toward the end. Even characters such as Lady Anne, who have an explicit knowledge of his
wickedness, allow themselves to be seduced by his brilliant wordplay, his skilful argumentation, and his relentless pursuit of his selfish desires. This is
a sign of a successful politician, he can twist the truth and make out that he is the victim, in Act I, scene I for example Richard woefully claims that his
hatred toward others stems from the fact that he is unloved, and that he is unloved because of his physical deformity. This claim casts the other
characters of the play as villains for punishing Richard for his appearance shows Richard's impunity.

to persuade her to marry him. Anne was grieving at the time, for both her husband

Television in Society
Synthesis Essay
Television, a widely accepted form of media and communication, has spread into the political world with an amazing speed. There are both useful and
detrimental aspects to this newfound relationship between television and politics. Sources A and E describe the more useful aspects oftelevision within
the political sphere, whereas Sources B and C portray the contrastingly detrimental aspects. Television has become useful in keeping the public
informed as to public issues, political rivalries and of course, the political elections. "One of the great contributions expected of television lay in its
presumed capacity to inform and stimulate the political interests of the American electorate," (Source A), suggests the increased communication
between the public and their political system. Citizens are able to receive a quick, presumably reliable source of information they otherwise would
usually receive later, with less details, and second–hand. The televised events create "a new, immediate contact with political events" (Source A),
which is important as technology allows for greater global and national communication. Additionally, Source E portrays the importance of public
opinion and the sway of television over political leaders for significant events. The significance of television in conjunction with the political leaders
themselves are exemplified by the fact that "if Walter Cronkite thought that the war was hopeless, the American people would think so

Investigating Politicians Outside Of Office
Examining Politicians Outside of Office
Over the course of American history, there have been many instances of respected politicians tainting their reputations because of scandals in their
personal lives. With 24 hour news as a normal part of society, the press is always looking for a story to keep its viewers watching. Since these
journalists are always searching for stories about big figureheads, politicians are one of their prime targets. Although some people would argue that a
politician's personal life should be none of the American public's business, knowing about a candidate's personal life is important because he or she

Communication is a big part of leadership, because leaders have to tell people what to do, and if the people don't like the way they're being treated,
they will be less motivated to carry out their duty effectively. In addition, leaders have to surround themselves with intelligent people to get advice
from them, but if the advisers feel intimidated or disrespected they will be less inclined to speak up. If it weren't for journalists prying into Hillary's
life, the public would not know how she behaves when she is out of the public eye. It is important for citizens to hear from insiders that "being on
Hillary Clinton's detail is the worst duty assignment in the Secret Service" because the president should be the epitome of a model citizen, in both
public and private.
We do not want someone governing our country who cannot be looked up to as a good role model. Donald Trump is one example of a candidate

Washington interact. This analysis was written in the final years of her life. The book, was titled Washington. Greenfield offered an interesting
perspective having been a witness to decades of activity with many of the nation's political leaders, and her book offers readers a look at what actually

Washington gives a look at the sociology of political Washington, D.C., from the perspective of a woman who spent a very long time living and writing
there. Greenfield starts with a comparison that is rehashed all throughout the book: the social climate of Washington is, she says, is like the social
structure of secondary school. She expounds by itemizing the useless arguments and fixation on one 's reputation that describe both secondary school
and political Washington. Greenfield argues that some political careers destroy the personalities of lawmakers, making them show stilted, unnatural
forms of themselves. This is meant engage voters, though often ends up causing politicians great harm in their personal lives. She then

Pericles shaped his campaigning around pleasing the masses. Thucydides' political strategy was to get all of his supporters to sit together in the
assembly. Unfortunately for him, there were not many to support him against Pericles. Strategically, Pericles gave nearly all of the political power to
the people. This was the reason he was known as the 'first citizen of democratic Athens by the historian Thucydides. Purposefully, he was constantly
'beautifying' Athens. As stated by Plutarch, Pericles "constantly provided public pageants, banquets, and processions in the city, entertaining the
people like children with elegant pleasures." He made sure he kept the public happy. Along with elaborate public displays, Pericles, expanded
territories. According to Plutarch, "he dispatched 1,000 settlers to the Chersonese, 500 to Naxos, 250 to Andros, 1,000 to Thrace to make their homes
with the Bisaltae, and others to the new colony named Thurii." This expansion allowed the city to rid itself of 'idlers' and 'agitators' and "raise the
standards of the poorest classes". In addition to his great political strategies, one of the main ways that Pericles gained the adornment of Athenians, and
also the greatest criticism from his adversaries was through the building of several temples and public buildings. His enemies proposed in the Assembly

Similarities in Avalanches and the Government
It is hard to walk down the side of a street without either seeing a newspaper hearing a radio commentator talking about the most recent national
disaster or the newest countries now at war or assisting the war efforts of others. Governments around the world are working 24/7 to protect their
ideals at any expense. If foreign governments threaten each other, they go to war. If any aspect of society threatens a government, a regulation or law is
soon passed to correct the problem. As communication all over the world increases, and more important choices are made per day than any other time
in history, governments all over the world have grown in power in an attempt to monitor these interactions and keep their ideals and power intact. This

Like today's politics also, the snowflake isn't going to come out of the avalanche and take responsibility for the destruction it started.
The obvious difference between American politics and an avalanche is that governments are made of people capable of intelligent thought, instead of a
mindless mass of snow. In some ways this makes modern governments even more dangerous. A mass of snow only has a single purpose, toppling trees
and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Modern politics, however, can adapt. The human element of politics allows for ingenuity in overcoming
obstacles as well as brute force. Ingenuity and problem solving have solved, or aided in the resolution of, harms such as sickness, military invasion, and
natural disasters. Human thinking has allowed for developments in science, medicine, and education. It has also helped create nuclear weapons, guns,
and corporations that eat up Earth's resources at an astounding rate. The human element of politics makes it more powerful and resourceful, but it
makes it that much more dangerous.
Like an avalanche, people know what a government is capable of and habitually live in fear of it. After a war or decision with a high cost (whether it
be a financial cost or a cost of human life) governments like to point out all they have accomplished and refuse to mention in detail

Essay on The Role of Youth in Politics
Cavins 1
Throughout the history of America young people have always played a crucial role in politics. The famous writer Srirangam Srinivas wrote, "Our
country is not in the hands of lazy and corrupted old politicians, this country is ours i.e. youth". Young people between the ages 18 to 25 are the future
of this country and its political system. The young people of America have a responsibility to be involved with politics and with their civic duties. The
youth in America must be involved in politics to ensure that America stays a country of freedom, and to combat the corruption in politics, they must
also be involved with their civic duties in order to give back to their country and to leave a legacy of political and civic participation ... Show more

When the founding fathers drafted the Constitution their main focus was creating a nation where everyone would be free from the restraints of a
controlling government and treated equal. America has always been a nation of freedom, and needs to remain that way. The youth in this country
is charged with the task of ensuring that America remains the "land of the free". Without involvement in politics this is not possible. If youth are
to maintain the American ideals of freedom and equality it is imperative that they be involved in politics. Voting every four years for the president,
who is more of a figure head than anything else, is simply not enough. Young people need to take a more active role in politics such as running for
a political office, local or national. This is the only way they will be able to put their beliefs into action and ensure that America upholds it's long
standing values of freedom and equality. The youth need to start taking action as soon as they are old enough. However, young people need to be
educated on politics and be firm in their beliefs before delving into the world of politics. In recent years the youth have shown a trend of
disengagement and apathy toward political involvement. According to "The Good Citizen", a book written by Russell J. Dalton, political analysts and
politicians agree that the youth are losing interest in politics and

La Loca 's Existence Is Crucial For Two Major Reasons
La Loca's existence is crucial for two major reasons. First, her resurrection in the first chapter declares the nature of the story and hints of its
magical narrative. Castillo wastes no time to inform her readers that So Far From God is a work of magical realism. Second, La Loca exists to
encourage Sofi to rebel against the religious institution and the political establishment. As the narrator reports, "Loca had never left home and her
mother was the sole person whom she ever let get near her" (221). This is a hint that La Loca's relationship with Sofi goes beyond a mother–daughter
relationship. It is a cause–and–effect relationship, since Sofi's rebellion is staged on three different phases–each phase begins with La Loca (the cause)
and ends with Sofi (the effect). La Loca's resurrection is a turning point in Sofi's personal realization of her inner voice. It is a point where she starts
to question God's wisdom and protests the church (23). Father Jerome, who plays a symbolic role as a sexist religious leader, attributes La Loca's
resurrection to the "devil" (24). It is significant because the Catholic church, which he supposed to follow, encourages its adherents to believe in
miracles. Hence, his explanation of the resurrection is contradictory to what he supposed to preach. Sofi protests his "mere suggestion"–maybe for the
first time in her adult life–and describes her daughter's resurrection as a "miracle" (23). Noticeably, the crowd, who attends La Loca's

Why I 'm Political By Margaret Cho
"Why I'm Political"
Margaret Cho is political because she feels that minorities like her are discriminated against as having "invisibility" in a society that gears primarily
toward Caucasian men (141). In her youth, Cho tried to remain apolitical as she thought that staying away from her North Korean ancestry would
help her to become more American. However, she found quickly that this system made her feel insecure about her skin color and became racist
herself. These racist ideals caused her to think of how she lived, how she felt, and how others saw her. Now, she is fighting with her own "self–hatred"
of being North Korean to try and become a prominent figure in the political humor industry (143). She believes that as a political ... Show more content

She believes that politicians have an addiction to their powerful positions and often their decisions are clouded by their goal of staying in office.
Massura believes that the worst Americans are the ones who become politicians. She cites that our best American citizens do not want to be put through
the negative public attention that a politician has to endure, and that they actually are our businessmen, inventors, writers and teachers. Power is not
their incentive to perform in their jobs. Massura chooses to stay away politics and let the politicians argue as she watches her prime time TV sitcoms in
ignorance of what actually is transpiring in our government today.
I agree with Massura's statement that today, most politicians are fame– and power–addicted. Once politicians are voted into office, they have to strike a
balance to conform to the concerns for their constituents but also try not to alienate too many people for fear of not getting reelected. Lobbyist groups
provide candidates with the most of the money for reelection campaigns that a politician considers when making important decisions. They are put in
positions of honor and esteem and often feel above the law because of their positions. Unfortunately, many politicians fall to unethical lifestyles and get
caught up in the glory of the position rather than sticking to the campaign platforms that allowed them to be elected in the first place.
According to Massura, most good people do not have power as their

Sermon On The Plane
The Sermon on the Plane is a speech given by Jesus in Luke 6:20–49. He is speaking to his disciples in addition to many people who were there to see
if he would heal them, or people who just wanted to hear and watch him. Within this speech Jesus expresses many ideas that can be integrated into
modern day politics. I believe his main points and the points I would base my political platform on are a foreign policy based on peace, to provide
graciously to the poor, and one against dirty campaign finance and career politicians. The first issue that I would address in a presidential campaign
based on Jesus's Sermon on the Plane would be foreign policy. In verse 27 and 28 it is written, "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

Jesus asks in verse 34, "If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you?" In context, he is trying to convince his
followers to be different than the normal people who have a "you help me I help you" attitude. I think that is still important for followers of Jesus
today. Since I am building my platform on these verses I think that these issues needs to be brought up. Many politicians campaign by getting money
from organizations that they hope to help out later when elected. Also, many politicians help each other out by voting for Thing A, but only after the
politician in charge of Thing A agrees to vote for Thing B that the original politician is in charge of. This is not the attitude Jesus is conveying for
his followers. I would address this first by running a clean campaign, and then when president enforce more laws about campaigning. I would also
enact term limit laws to stop people from becoming career politicians which would reduce the amount of the activity described above. I would be
ridiculed by my opponent for caring about an issue that is not super important to many people and they would attack me on this saying there are more

Corruption Of Corruption
The corrupt of political figures is something that many American people are concerned about. Whether one believes that this corruption has been
occurring for years or believe that it is more prevalent now, it is something that is on the minds of many people. Corruption of political figures is

politicians at all levels.
To prevent this corruption from occurring, once a political figure is half way through his or her term, at least ninety percent of American citizens

Non Politician Oxymoron
The "Non–Politician" Oxymoron of American Political Lexicon
One of the most confusing phenomenon to anyone unfamiliar with the American political landscape is about the "non–politician" or so–called
"outsider" who is seeking a political office on the strength of his inexperience or unfamiliarity with the political process. The public likes the idea of
someone who is an outsider to politics, who will come in and "straighten" out all the 'mess' the career politicians have made. Most people running for
an office for the first time (whether new to politics or not) know this and are astute enough to paint themselves as "new", "fresh", 'outsider" etc.

The Republican base wants "new" blood, "outsiders," to represent them in the upcoming election primarily because they feel they've been lied to.
While that may be true, it does not exonerate them from their complicit credulity. It is indeed ironic that while they are reacting out of a sense of
betrayal, they inadvertently fall prey again to individuals who are representing themselves in less than honest ways. I believe most politicians are a
reflection of their base. So if the Republican base wants better representation from politicians who will not lie to them, they should first learn to change
with the times and adjust their reality and expectations to the current political landscape. That way, when someone promises them heaven and earth, or
things that are unrealistic to achieve, they will know they are

Gerrymandering: Election and Politicians
Gerrymandering
The term gerrymandering refers to the practice of altering voting districts in order to achieve electoral results favorable to one person or party, usually
the incumbent politician or party creating the new voting regions.1 This term, dating back to 1812, is an established method for incumbent politicians
to improve their heresthetical "defense," by manipulating the dimensions of the political landscape.2 This tactic is extremely common in the United
States and a prime example of politicians acting as manipulators. This essay will argue that politicians are manipulators, as evidenced by the
gerrymandering of voting districts to improve odds of maintaining power, and opposition attempts to counteract this electoral ... Show more content on

More convincing than the fact that the majority of incumbents retained their seats by overwhelming margins is the shocking statistic that a quarter of
the incumbents were uncontested.13 These politicians were so successful at arranging favorable districts that it was futile to even attempt a challenge.
The author continued to examine particularly egregious cases of gerrymandering in New York, including that of Senator Guy Vellela, who once
selected voters for his district by individual city blocks.14 Senator Guy Vellela, as well as the other state senators of New York, are prime examples of
politicians exploiting gerrymandering to manipulate the outcome of elections and improve their outcomes. Riker argues that these bold uses of
gerrymandering are made possible, and even encouraged, by two landmark Supreme Court Cases. Baker v. Carr and Reynolds v. Sims were two
similar cases from the 1960's that addressed the unequal representation caused by the unwillingness of politicians to adjust the electoral districts to
accurately reflect the major population changes of the twentieth century.15 Baker v. Carr and Reynolds v. Sims forced Congress and state legislative
bodies to correct this inaccurate political representation by mandating equally sized voting districts.16 In fact, Reynolds v. Sims went so far as to
require a voting population difference of no more than ten percent between the largest and smallest electoral districts.17 Furthermore,

Many Americans have had it with career politicians and the political correct creed in which they swim. For so many elected officials – especially those

Not since Ronald Reagan in 1980, have we had someone running for the nation's highest elected office who hasn't made politics his life's bread and
butter. That person is Donald Trump.
Trump did not emerge from out of nowhere. His nomination was created by years of Beltway malaise, where the established politicos wanted no part in

Compare And Contrast Machiavelli And Hobbes
Hobbes and Machiavelli's understanding of Morality and applications In contrast to the Ancient Greek Philosophers Plato and Aristotle, who espoused
virtue ethics and argued that one ought to be virtuous and seek to fulfil their role in the community, both Machiavelli and Hobbes could be described
as adherents of a teleological approach to moral reasoning. In a political context, this means that Machiavelli and Hobbes are more concerned with the
outcome of a policy or political action than with reasoning based on a system of objective morality to determine what is right and wrong. Machiavelli
and Hobbes do differ in a few significant areas, but both philosophers agree that there. The ideas of Machiavelli and Hobbes are useful for
understanding political decision making and even the behavior of politicians. However, when taken to the extreme or if applied in the wrong contexts
these ideas can cause significant harm to society. Machiavelli wrote The Prince specifically as a guide for rulers of absolute monarchies. Since he is
addressing the ruler of a Sovereign Nation, one can assume that his intention is not to create a system of ethics for the collective society or for
individuals to follow, but rather that he is making claims about what one specific individual–the ruler–ought to do to maintain power and insure the
stability of the state. Machiavelli's first requirement of such a ruler and the assumption that he makes which serves as a basis for

What makes a leader? What makes an extraordinary leader? As with everything else in life, the answers depend upon who you ask and why you ask.

Politics can make for a very rousing discussion for it is a given that not everyone shares the same ideals, attitudes and beliefs as that of another as

in every possible way, in order to become a benevolent leader, he/she would not win my vote. Although Cicero's On Duties makes many strong claims
for what he stands by, argues, and debates, they are not necessarily views represented by all, but merely through his ideology. A good leader must

California Governing Crisis
In 2008 California was faced with a huge budget crisis and governing crisis as the state governing was not nearly as efficient enough to respond to
changes and problems that were happening in the state. This was due to a lot of poor laws that related to taxation and to the way our state government
worked. There is also unique differences with California than other states, like our direct democracy system, and many of our laws are compromises
that don't work well between liberal and conservative ideologies. Our politicians are also not well motivated to serve the people and would rather
server their own special interests that benefit their own career. While there are still a lot of problems that California needs to deal with, we did make

The first is to lose the direct democracy system California has had in place. The intention was to prevent special interests but it has been proven
ineffective as most voters don't have the time to look over complex bills. Also as Van Vecthen notes our ballot initiative system is getting over
swamped with bills that can be confusing and distracting. This year there was a bill to both keep and repeal the death penalty and that level of
nuance can be confusing to a voter who isn't paying attention to every little detail. These can also raise issues that are not that important in the
grand scheme of things like for example, this year we had a bill to regulate condom use in pornography. The biggest problem I see though with the
direct democracy system is that it does not hold politicians accountable enough. If we have a say in the system, when things go wrong politicians
instead of blaming their own policies can now blame ballot initiative policies. Overall I think the negatives and positives of a representative
democracy will still outweigh those of the direct democracy system. Using the California budget challenge I choose what I'd call a quasi–socialist
future for California. While I'd still support much of free trade as it is necessary to generate capital my plan focuses on fixing archaic and broken tax
laws, and spending a ton on social services like education. The taxes I would

There are important lessons to be drawn close to home. Trump's act of intentionally and regularly lying has been a pivotal and disturbing part of the

This only fuels a public desire to ensure they too get whatever they think they are entitled to by whatever means – including lying and deception. It

There is no silver bullet to stop this problem among our politicians and public figures, but that does not mean we should not try. And if you are

Is Politics A Politician?
Retail politics can best be described as gaining support or backing for an individual through direct personal connection and networking. This type of
politics is incredibly important because it creates a more intimate and special kind of deal that makes that person more willing to support a particular
politician. Not to mention it can help on a personal level by moving up social and trust levels, which is a huge part of politics. This kind of politics is
different than wholesale politics which targets a large audience rather than an individual person. A congressional cloakroom is a communal meeting

While retail politics is an amazing tool, it does have its limitations. For because the process requires intimate human connection, it can not really
be scaled past a small group of people. Essentially, it can not really only be implemented locally and not nationally. However those connections
made locally can help on the federal level. Today, retail politics is still very important but not as important as it was in the 1950's. This is because
nowadays the public is swayed by large scale news articles, debates and television ads which all falls under the category of wholesale politics. Yet
retail politics is still important today for a politician to stay in good standing with his/her staff and potentially move up the ladder of power.
Chapter 2
The phrase "all politics is local" means that politicians are only successful if they do what is best for the district or area they serve. Or in other
words, they serve the people they are representing. For if a politician loses touch with his/her people and they no longer feel represented, the
politician will not only lose votes, but most likely be ousted by another. An example from this chapter is when Congressman Edward J. Patten used a
newspaper article displaying his opponents West End Avenue address. As the book says the race was won right then and there because Eddie Pattern
showed his opponent not truly being a "local" person. Another example from the book is when the powerful Al Ullman

One of the most important components to a political campaign is the voter, for no political candidate can be elected without someone voting for them.
The dedication of both candidates, Stanton and Picker, to their voters is another aspect that accentuates their nobleness. Stanton is remarkable in his
devotion to the public; the ability to reach out and interact with the public and the power to help them is the reason why he loves politics. While

Media And Synthesis Essay
I often wonder about our humanity given the current state of affairs in our nation and abroad. America has been a powerful and abundant nation
through a lifetime of wars and financial crisis but today is a different time for many of us. What is the media producer's role in our very own
implosion? What is our, the "media user" role in it?
Media networks have sensationalized events and stories that in the past, we would never have thought to be newsworthy and/or would have never
known about but due to the many technological advances and the emergence of social networks, we are inundated twenty–four–seven via social
networks click bait advertising to news networks embracing social media to convey their messages using a multitude of avenues such as twitter,
Facebook, and Instagram just to name a few. Whereas the media producers have responsibilities to audiences, us media users, the "audience" have our
own obligations.

"professionals of the media system" and the various elites who produce mediated political communication"1 did not pacify my inner beast mode.

Political Communication
Politics and the media have long been intimately involved with each other, with media strongly setting an agenda in which politics is very
important. (Harris 1999,p.167) "Our perceived reality of the real world is largely a product of the media." (Harris 1999,p.186) It is not known which
influences more but there are definitely two sides to the story. Many studies have been done to decide but each comes out with different answers.
Many say that the media has more of an impact on politics than does politics on the media. "The two have always been natural adversaries."

There is still argument for both sides but leaning more towards the media. Presidential elections, campaigns, and policies have always been
important in the media and to the public. The media creates a political world that is the basis of the public's knowledge and the later behavior, such
as voting for the president or any public official. The themes and issues that are repeated in the media become important to viewers. Those that are
highlighted become especially influential when it comes to choosing a candidate. The media affects evaluations of presidents. Presidential approval
is strongly influenced by how the media portrays the candidate to the public. For example, during the Gulf War, George Bush received bad publicity
based on his performance with the war even though his prior economic performance was exceptional. (Edwards 1999, p329) The values in which
people used to evaluate him on were influenced by what the media had to say. Particular televised political advertising, televised candidate events. And
news articles also affect the preferences and opinions of the voters. For example, Bob Dole in the 1996 election. His age arose early from the media.
During the primary election, over 800 news stories dealt with Dole's

The Media And Its Impact On Society
The significant presence of electronic media has gradually led to a crisis for society's
problems. Though it seems to go unnoticed by most, the way that we are obtaining our
information is a mere means of entertainment thanks to the universalization of media and
television. Postman discusses the consequences of living in a technologically advanced age by
discussing four aspects of society that are most affected: the news, religion, politics, and
education. Society has shifted from words of reason and sensibility to an era with an epitome for
trivial media content. Generally, the overall idea of television is not what makes it problematic
for society, but the impression and loss of purpose and truth within our television programs
which are to blame.
Out of the four aspects mentioned, politics has to be the most corruptive towards society.
Politicians are unable to express their intellectual knowledge on important issues and instead of
being treated as potential political leaders, they are praised similarly to celebrities. The most
recent election led to unending promotional political commercials being broadcasted. The
promotional margin of political figures is often taken as a means of self–interest, voting for the
'most–likeable' candidate. Gone are the days of understanding and voting for Republicans or
Democratic parties. Politics are devalued into forms of imagery, simplicity and brevity while
contemplation and deliberation are ruled out. Due to the

Marion Barry Scandal Report

  • 1. Marion Barry Scandal Report Luca Coppola Political Communications Dr. Burns Oct.7th 2014 Marion Barry Scandal Report A politician leads every country in the world. Whether their people chose them or self instated, they are the engines that keep governments going. In an ideal world, every politician would be an exemplary human being, with so much power its important to be able to trust those who wield it. Regrettably, they are not always perfect people. There have been hundreds of scandals involving politicians all over the world, some more well known than others. In todays day and age living in such a technologically connected era, political scandals are coming to light more now than ever. With social media everywhere and with hundreds of people literally walking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After he served his time, Barry checked himself into Skinner Farm rehab facility. He realized that the sting operation saved his life from the addiction that would have resulted in his untimely death. Many people didn't believe he could battle both his addictions and serve the people of Washington DC, while some of his close associates knew that politics was all he needed to get his mind off of drugs. Marion also did a few things differently than other politicians when confronted with scandal. Once caught on camera, he did some things differently than Rob Ford did. He did not deny any involvement or wrong doing, his lawyer even stated during the trial that Barry did admit to having a drug problem. Rather, Barry often criticized the government, claiming they set him up or tried to make him look bad. Barry apologized, served his time, went to rehab for "alchohal", and faced the reality of the situation. Where most politicians caught in scandal avoid the press, Barry used it as an ego boost, wanting them to follow and watch him so that he could prove to DC that he was coming back and meant business. I think that this actually helped him because the public believed that he was clear and truthful. Using the campaign slogan " He may not be the perfect man, but he's perfect for DC" was also a very strategic move as it shows he's not running from his past, but hopes to make up for ... • 2. The Bush, An American Politician And Politician Jeb Bush, (John Ellis Bush) born February 11, 1953 in Midland, Texas, is an American businessman and politician. He served as the Governor of Florida from 1999 to 2007 and is currently a candidate in the U.S. Presidential race. Bush, coming from a very well–known and influential political family, tries to separate himself from the Bush name and his father's and brother's previous actions in office. He is a Catholic and cites his wife Columba as instrumental in his success in both his political and business adventures, and has three kids and several grandchildren. Favorers of his father and brother are likely to vote for Jeb, however neither have had overwhelmingly high ratings. Bush's background as white, Christian male like the majority... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bush has said that he "hates being a frontrunner" and feel as if he is in the lead, he doesn't feel like he is truly working hard. He has stated that he much rather prefers a lower rating so that he can challenge himself and show his followers that he is hardworking. Bush started out with the second highest approval rating after the first Republican presidential debate, but that rate has steadily declined with the succeeding debates. Bush's arguments with Rubio and Trump seemed to upset the public, and now holds a very low approval rate as a result. From the moment Bush announced his candidacy for president, Super PACS and individual contributors were pouring millions and millions of dollars into his campaign budget. Right to Rise USA, a nonprofit Super PAC created byJeb Bush is an instrumental organization aimed to fund Bush's campaign and staffers. According to USNews.com, Right to Rise USA is said to spend about 100 million dollars on the Jeb Bush 2016 presidential campaign. This Super PAC is the biggest vendor in size and scope, and is responsible for massive amounts of obscure spending. The Citizens United vs. FEC supreme court decision is the main culprit to this PAC's unrestricted contribution limits, leaving Bush with an unfair advantage. Even though the polls are not in favor of him, it is reported that Bush's budget can sustain him in the running until the end. Furthermore, Jeb not only depends on political action committees to fund his campaign, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay about Celebrity Activists in Contemporary Society Celebrity Activists in Contemporary Society Works Cited Not Included According to the book Celebrity Politics, approximately 10 percent of Americans get national political news from nightly entertainment shows such as the Tonight Show. For Americans under 30, the number is nearly five times as many (Orman and West 100). Citizens are looking to be entertained rather than simply educated by the nightly news. As David Schultz aptly put it, " The new media cover politics, but only politics as it entertains, in part, because the audience the new media attract is a less politically interested audience than traditional news audiences" (20). The fact is that this American audience is less interested in hard news and more interested in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most notable case of a politician using celebrity endorsers is that of former President Ronald Reagan, a former B–list actor himself. Some of his supporters in 1980 included James Cagney, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Hoagy Carmichael (West and Orman 38). The growing connection between politics and Hollywood has happened for a number of reasons, in a somewhat cyclical fashion. Politicians need Hollywood stars to support their campaigns because celebrities are useful in fundraising attempts and recognition. They have the advantages of fame, wealth, and can easily command press attention. In return, celebrities endorse candidates whose policies are beneficial to their industry. For example, while Clinton was in office he argued for "industry self–regulation and a television rating system, as opposed to formal government regulation" (Ormand and West 38). For this and other reasons, Hollywood stars donated large sums of money to Democratic candidates in return. In 2000, Hollywood contributed $20 million to Democrats as opposed to the $13 million that was contributed to the less Hollywood–friendly Republican party (Ormand and West 40). This is the new "celebritized" (Combs 123) political culture in which advocacy organizations must function. Because the media is so inundated with celebrity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Equally as important how can political leaders enact solutions in today 's hyper political world where constructive debate and solutions are so hard to achieve? Is there such a leader who can navigate the polarizing political lands of current day america, and be an effective leader? In Freshman Congressman Scott Taylor of Virginia 's second district, we may have elected champion who can be the light in a dark room and who can be the clear voice in a room full of chaos. I sat down with Congressman Taylor to talk about the many complexities of these challenging questions. Congressman Taylor is seen as many to be a bright young rising star in the Republican party... After getting the congressman definition of leadership I wanted to ask what are some of the issues that his district has shown interest in and how did they voice their concerns?. He proceeded to answer, "we get input on all type of issues from all types of constituents, my team is hundreds of calls daily from constituents voicing their opinion and concerns. • 5. Corruption Is A Universal One The problem with corruption is a universal one, but this challenge is particularly egregious in new and developing democracies. Brazil's troubles with corruption stem from far before democratization in the 1980s. From the military takeover and the rule of the bureaucratic authoritarian regime to the present day, this nation has struggled with nepotism, clientism, and favoritism as well as a slew of other corrupt practices. The state, federal, and municipal levels of government have all been plagued with corruption scandals. From the impeachment of President Fernando Collor to the MensalГЈo scandal, the Brazilian government has been in a constant struggle to quell its problems with corruption and economic distress. In this paper I will explain how politicians engage in corruption at the municipal level and the effects their actions can have on the nation. To do this, I will analyze the underlying causes of corruption in Brazil's municipalities (namely Rio de Janeiro and SГЈo Paulo) and how these causes are acted on. Finally, I will detail the repercussions of these actions, and what Brazil can do (and to some degree has done) to solve this issue. To understand how corruption occurs and what is effects are, the underlying causes of corruption must be understood first. Both systematic factors as well as traditional and societal expectations have made corruption possible in Brazil. Why politicians can and do abuse their power can give much needed insight in understanding the most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Handwritten Letter Chapter Summary In February of 2010, Omar Ahmad (former mayor of San Carlos, California) spoke to a crowd in Long Beach, California discussing the importance of a handwritten letter. His main point is that "we live in a digital world... but handwritten letters actually work". When communicating with a political figure, nothing is stronger than a handwritten letter. Mr. Ahmad gives a four step list on how to efficiently write a letter, paragraph by paragraph. He also uses his knowledge gained from his time working for the Discovery Channel to make comparisons between political figures and wild animals. • 7. Social Media, Though Relatively New,Is A Growing Part Of Social media, though relatively new, is a growing part of everyday life. The question one must ask is: what impact does this form of communication have on global politics? Whereas social media is not always a reliable source, it serves to engage the global population in a casual manner, weaving politics into the fabric of everyday life. Social media influences not only the mundane, daily political ongoings from country to country but also political movements and revolutions. However, one must remain wary, as that this form of media is heavily biased, which can present issues for a less informed audience. Social media presents a new method of communication in which the modern citizen may participate in informal political debate, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While these types of political monologues may still take place on social media, they are not the only kind of discussion and, generally, leave room for debate between parties. With these everyday discussions surrounding politics comes influence from the general public social media provides a space to "enable a more efficient information exchange and a more egalitarian structure of communication between politicians and citizens", rather than relying exclusively on formal methods of communication. New technological advancements, particularly in social media, have virtually severed the gap between politicians and the public, resulting in a changing political rhetoric from what was previously considered the norm. Much of a politician's campaign and publicity now takes place online through likes, tweets, and reposts. In this fashion, Israel held their general elections in March of 2015, which the right–wing party won. Throughout the electoral campaign "right–wing politicians exhibited higher levels of activity" on social media platforms compared to the centre or left–wing parties. • 8. The Pros And Cons Of Social Penetration Introduction This community is sick of the government, how it governs the country, how it takes the issues and problems for granted, how the opportunist politicians take away people's penny, and there's a lot more. Some express their dismay, disgust, and supplications through huge signs and shouts in front of government offices, some through articles and blogs, and some are through songs. "Upuan " sang by Aristotle Pollisco also known as Gloc 9 , one of the most successful hip–hop artists in the Philippines, featuring Jeazell Grutas, female vocalist of the rock band Zelle , shows the true status of the society. The lyrics on the first part are describing the deaf and blind politicians to pay attention, to see and hear the people's plea. The rap part of the song tells about how comfortable and envying lives of the politicians are compare to the status of most of the people in the society. On the other ... He closed the mansion to avoid any interaction with the outside world of colonizers. After the death of their father, the daughters continue to remain alienated from the world, but as time passes they get rid off their parental subjugation and get fascinated by the colonizers. They organize a party in which they invite the members of the white community and the few "non–white guests–local zamindars and their wives."(16). Informative Essay On Social Media Ranjan Maskey Prof. Sherry Sherafin GOVT–2305–71603 October 30, 2017 Social Media and the USA Presidency Social media has become a very important part of our lifestyle. It is a platform where people can share anything they want: their personal life, social life, beliefs, thoughts, political agendas, etc. social medias like Facebook and Twitter have now become one of the main means of communication for the people around the world. Hence, it is no surprise that the political leaders around the world also use these social media platforms to communicate with their citizens. President Donald Trump is a perfect example of a political leader who uses social media to share his thoughts to the people around the world. In fact, Twitter and Facebook is the first place where people go to get information or news from the president. During the presidential election of 2017, the president and the vice–president of the United States used these media platform to reach out to the people. His saying "Believe in yourselves. Believe in your future. And believe, once more, in America" (Trump, 1) is very popular. • 11. The Politics Of The United States Our politicians are being bribed to influence what laws are being made in this country at a federal level. Due to the current situation in American politics corruption has become an accepted form of conducting business in the political world. "Since the implication of citizen's united in 2010 we have seen a dramatic turn in the direction of politics" (Silver). This is because now, any donor is allowed to contribute undisclosed amounts to any political campaign. The argument against this is that the politician running the campaign will feel the need to return the favor to the donor once they are in office. Statistics show this to be true. According to a twenty–year study done by Northwestern University this is true, in fact the study found that "only the top ten percent of earners in America are represented adequately by congress" (Silver). The citizen's united case was a case that reached the Supreme Court in 2010. It stated that "any corporation or individual could donate any amount of money, undisclosed, to the campaign of their choosing" (Silver). The argument on this side was that a donor has the right to donate any amount of money due to freedom of speech. However, not everybody has millions of dollars to contribute, so not everybody has equal speech under this ruling. The unequal representation of people in this country affects each of us because not everyone gets a say. Keeping in mind his definition of what an institution is– it's origins, what it does, and what it represents– one can apply his analysis to the nature of tourism. When so much of the tourist industry relies on what is seen as "authentic" and how it is determined, it is important to focus on how various institutions shape Western and local thought. Charles Gibson puts forth a definition of "institutions", on which he bases his argument about Zambian wildlife policy. He says that, essentially, they are the result of "voluntary exchanges between relatively equal actors who are seeking mutually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Government institutions can become extremely unpopular by making decisions that benefit them, but in turn ignore or even harm local communities. As in wildlife policy, the "state/society" approach can be applied to tourism because it calls for the inclusion of "other members of society in its treatment" of issues (Gibson 8). Without the consultation of communities, truly beneficial legislation can never be passed, as the central government will never be made aware of both the nuanced or egregious problems faced at a more local level. This lack of involvement harbors feelings of resentment among locals. According to Gibson, in parts of Zambia " arrests made by wildlife officers were the only direct contact that locals had with government" (Gibson 28). Negative reinforcement of laws, especially when it is the only kind of enforcement, makes tensions inevitable. Locals are likely to be put off by any government involvement, like voting or running for office if possible, when their experience with it is entirely negative. Resistance to laws becomes prevalent, and neither the state nor the local communities benefit. A reaction like this is not exclusive to wildlife policy. Laws concerning tourism can, and often are, faced with the same sort of local resistance, since community involvement is minimal to nonexistent in many places. Local ... There are both useful and detrimental aspects to this newfound relationship between television and politics. Sources A and E describe the more useful aspects oftelevision within the political sphere, whereas Sources B and C portray the contrastingly detrimental aspects. Television has become useful in keeping the public informed as to public issues, political rivalries and of course, the political elections. "One of the great contributions expected of television lay in its presumed capacity to inform and stimulate the political interests of the American electorate," (Source A), suggests the increased communication between the public and their political system. Citizens are able to receive a quick, presumably reliable source of information they otherwise would usually receive later, with less details, and second–hand. The televised events create "a new, immediate contact with political events" (Source A), which is important as technology allows for greater global and national communication. Additionally, Source E portrays the importance of public opinion and the sway of television over political leaders for significant events. The significance of television in conjunction with the political leaders themselves are exemplified by the fact that "if Walter Cronkite thought that the war was hopeless, the American people would think so ... Since these journalists are always searching for stories about big figureheads, politicians are one of their prime targets. This was the reason he was known as the 'first citizen of democratic Athens by the historian Thucydides. Purposefully, he was constantly 'beautifying' Athens. In some ways this makes modern governments even more dangerous. A mass of snow only has a single purpose, toppling trees and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Modern politics, however, can adapt. The human element of politics allows for ingenuity in overcoming obstacles as well as brute force. First, her resurrection in the first chapter declares the nature of the story and hints of its magical narrative. Castillo wastes no time to inform her readers that So Far From God is a work of magical realism. Second, La Loca exists to encourage Sofi to rebel against the religious institution and the political establishment. As the narrator reports, "Loca had never left home and her mother was the sole person whom she ever let get near her" (221). This is a hint that La Loca's relationship with Sofi goes beyond a mother–daughter relationship. It is a cause–and–effect relationship, since Sofi's rebellion is staged on three different phases–each phase begins with La Loca (the cause) and ends with Sofi (the effect). La Loca's resurrection is a turning point in Sofi's personal realization of her inner voice. It is a point where she starts to question God's wisdom and protests the church (23). Father Jerome, who plays a symbolic role as a sexist religious leader, attributes La Loca's resurrection to the "devil" (24). It is significant because the Catholic church, which he supposed to follow, encourages its adherents to believe in miracles. Hence, his explanation of the resurrection is contradictory to what he supposed to preach. Sofi protests his "mere suggestion"–maybe for the first time in her adult life–and describes her daughter's resurrection as a "miracle" (23). Noticeably, the crowd, who attends La Loca's ... Gerrymandering: Election and Politicians Gerrymandering The term gerrymandering refers to the practice of altering voting districts in order to achieve electoral results favorable to one person or party, usually the incumbent politician or party creating the new voting regions.1 This term, dating back to 1812, is an established method for incumbent politicians to improve their heresthetical "defense," by manipulating the dimensions of the political landscape.2 This tactic is extremely common in the United States and a prime example of politicians acting as manipulators. This essay will argue that politicians are manipulators, as evidenced by the gerrymandering of voting districts to improve odds of maintaining power, and opposition attempts to counteract this electoral ... More convincing than the fact that the majority of incumbents retained their seats by overwhelming margins is the shocking statistic that a quarter of the incumbents were uncontested.13 These politicians were so successful at arranging favorable districts that it was futile to even attempt a challenge. The author continued to examine particularly egregious cases of gerrymandering in New York, including that of Senator Guy Vellela, who once selected voters for his district by individual city blocks.14 Senator Guy Vellela, as well as the other state senators of New York, are prime examples of politicians exploiting gerrymandering to manipulate the outcome of elections and improve their outcomes. Riker argues that these bold uses of gerrymandering are made possible, and even encouraged, by two landmark Supreme Court Cases. Baker v. Carr and Reynolds v. Sims were two similar cases from the 1960's that addressed the unequal representation caused by the unwillingness of politicians to adjust the electoral districts to accurately reflect the major population changes of the twentieth century.15 Baker v. Carr and Reynolds v. Sims forced Congress and state legislative bodies to correct this inaccurate political representation by mandating equally sized voting districts.16 In fact, Reynolds v. Sims went so far as to require a voting population difference of no more than ten percent between the largest and smallest electoral districts.17 Furthermore, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Donald Trump's Political Career Many Americans have had it with career politicians and the political correct creed in which they swim. For so many elected officials – especially those on the state and federal levels, politics is not just a job, but a career. Not since Ronald Reagan in 1980, have we had someone running for the nation's highest elected office who hasn't made politics his life's bread and butter. That person is Donald Trump. Trump did not emerge from out of nowhere. His nomination was created by years of Beltway malaise, where the established politicos wanted no part in cutting federal spending, reining in the national debt and Federal Reserve, reforming the tax code, or eliminating federal departments that are nothing but bureaucratic anchors on every ... The price of defeat means a president facing possible impeachment and a liberalized Supreme Court locked in for the next two generations. I am under no figment that Trump is a saint – far from it and I am not alone. Do I support all of Trump's comments or stands? Of course not, I've never completely agreed with any candidate, nor was Trump my first choice in the primary, but he is the only one left who stands in the way of the scandalized and corrupt Clinton political machine's return to the White House. • 29. Corruption Of Corruption The corruption of political figures is something that many people, nationwide, believe that America has to deal with. Whether it be in local areas or the country overall it seems as people begin to gain power they seem to become more corrupt and stray away from what they should be worried about. To prevent this corruption from occurring, once a political figure is half way through his or her term, at least ninety percent of American citizens have to vote on whether or not the figure is suited for their position. If voted unfit he or she will be pushed off of the top of the Washington Monument. With this solution in place a person who is willing to hold a certain government office will start their career with only helping the citizens of the country in mind. Hopeful someone that is only trying to hold this office to benefit him or herself or to gain power just to see where it will take them will think twice before trying to get elected for a government position. They will be aware that half way through their term voting age American citizens will be voting on whether or not they are a good fit for the position. Before going into the job he or she will sign a contract stating that they are aware of this consequence. Voting on whether or not one's local or nationalpolitician is abusing his or her power is similar to voting some into the office. • 30. Compare And Contrast Machiavelli And Hobbes Hobbes and Machiavelli's understanding of Morality and applications In contrast to the Ancient Greek Philosophers Plato and Aristotle, who espoused virtue ethics and argued that one ought to be virtuous and seek to fulfil their role in the community, both Machiavelli and Hobbes could be described as adherents of a teleological approach to moral reasoning. In a political context, this means that Machiavelli and Hobbes are more concerned with the outcome of a policy or political action than with reasoning based on a system of objective morality to determine what is right and wrong. Machiavelli and Hobbes do differ in a few significant areas, but both philosophers agree that there. The ideas of Machiavelli and Hobbes are useful for understanding political decision making and even the behavior of politicians. However, when taken to the extreme or if applied in the wrong contexts these ideas can cause significant harm to society. Machiavelli wrote The Prince specifically as a guide for rulers of absolute monarchies. Since he is addressing the ruler of a Sovereign Nation, one can assume that his intention is not to create a system of ethics for the collective society or for individuals to follow, but rather that he is making claims about what one specific individual–the ruler–ought to do to maintain power and insure the stability of the state. As with everything else in life, the answers depend upon who you ask and why you ask. Leaders can be classified as either benevolent or malevolent. • 32. California Governing Crisis In 2008 California was faced with a huge budget crisis and governing crisis as the state governing was not nearly as efficient enough to respond to changes and problems that were happening in the state. This was due to a lot of poor laws that related to taxation and to the way our state government worked. There is also unique differences with California than other states, like our direct democracy system, and many of our laws are compromises that don't work well between liberal and conservative ideologies. Our politicians are also not well motivated to serve the people and would rather server their own special interests that benefit their own career. While there are still a lot of problems that California needs to deal with, we did make adjustments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first is to lose the direct democracy system California has had in place. The intention was to prevent special interests but it has been proven ineffective as most voters don't have the time to look over complex bills. Also as Van Vecthen notes our ballot initiative system is getting over swamped with bills that can be confusing and distracting. This year there was a bill to both keep and repeal the death penalty and that level of nuance can be confusing to a voter who isn't paying attention to every little detail. These can also raise issues that are not that important in the grand scheme of things like for example, this year we had a bill to regulate condom use in pornography. The biggest problem I see though with the direct democracy system is that it does not hold politicians accountable enough. If we have a say in the system, when things go wrong politicians instead of blaming their own policies can now blame ballot initiative policies. Overall I think the negatives and positives of a representative democracy will still outweigh those of the direct democracy system. Using the California budget challenge I choose what I'd call a quasi–socialist future for California. While I'd still support much of free trade as it is necessary to generate capital my plan focuses on fixing archaic and broken tax laws, and spending a ton on social services like education. One can hardly expect the public to embrace this kind of public pronouncement while they continue to see their politicians going out of their way to mislead, deceive and hide their abuse of expenses, for example, and especially when the behaviour of the same politicians appears to be driven by their own sense of entitlement. This only fuels a public desire to ensure they too get whatever they think they are entitled to by whatever means – including lying and deception. It becomes a case of 'If they can do it, then why can't I?'. That is hardly a recipe for a stable, peaceful and prosperous society. There is no silver bullet to stop this problem among our politicians and public figures, but that does not mean we should not try. • 34. Is Politics A Politician? Retail politics can best be described as gaining support or backing for an individual through direct personal connection and networking. This type of politics is incredibly important because it creates a more intimate and special kind of deal that makes that person more willing to support a particular politician. Not to mention it can help on a personal level by moving up social and trust levels, which is a huge part of politics. This kind of politics is different than wholesale politics which targets a large audience rather than an individual person. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While retail politics is an amazing tool, it does have its limitations. For because the process requires intimate human connection, it can not really be scaled past a small group of people. Essentially, it can not really only be implemented locally and not nationally. However those connections made locally can help on the federal level. Today, retail politics is still very important but not as important as it was in the 1950's. This is because nowadays the public is swayed by large scale news articles, debates and television ads which all falls under the category of wholesale politics. Yet retail politics is still important today for a politician to stay in good standing with his/her staff and potentially move up the ladder of power. Chapter 2 The phrase "all politics is local" means that politicians are only successful if they do what is best for the district or area they serve. Or in other words, they serve the people they are representing. For if a politician loses touch with his/her people and they no longer feel represented, the politician will not only lose votes, but most likely be ousted by another. An example from this chapter is when Congressman Edward J. Patten used a newspaper article displaying his opponents West End Avenue address. As the book says the race was won right then and there because Eddie Pattern showed his opponent not truly being a "local" person. Another example from the book is when the powerful Al Ullman ... Primary Colors by Anonymous portrays this fraudulent game perfectly, exhibiting all of the dark aspects of a political campaign: from the vicious media in their pursuit of scandals, to the traitorousness of opposing candidates to destroy each other, all the way to the secretive sexual interactions taking place during the campaigning process. In all of his public appearances, Picker always seems to be speaking what is exactly on his mind––just speaking the truth, and even when the reader discovers that he has been putting up a faГ§ade all along, the fact that Picker admits to his conflicts and problems only re–emphasizes his nobleness. One of the most important components to a political campaign is the voter, for no political candidate can be elected without someone voting for them. The dedication of both candidates, Stanton and Picker, to their voters is another aspect that accentuates their nobleness. Stanton is remarkable in his devotion to the public; the ability to reach out and interact with the public and the power to help them is the reason why he loves politics. While campaigning it is the people that need him, like Danny Scanlon the crippled boy, the adult illiterates, or the unemployed in Portsmouth, that keep Stanton going, for they "deserved a better country–and that was what this election had to be about" (144). There is a truth to Stanton's promises, similar to the way he doesn't forget people's names and the aspects of their personal lives, he also doesn't forget the promises he gives them in return for their support. Nobody who's seen the movie would fail to know the names of these lead characters, but most of them could not tell you the name of Noah's best friend or the name of Allies cousin whom she's visiting. These characters are crucial to the story and an important part of these characters' lives and back–ground for the movies purpose, but most people fail to see here significance. The same goes for a leader or leadership position. It's easy to see the people in the spotlight, front and center, but it's when you finally look in the shadows that you realize more is happening than what you saw at first glance. • 37. Media And Synthesis Essay I often wonder about our humanity given the current state of affairs in our nation and abroad. America has been a powerful and abundant nation through a lifetime of wars and financial crisis but today is a different time for many of us. What is the media producer's role in our very own implosion? What is our, the "media user" role in it? Media networks have sensationalized events and stories that in the past, we would never have thought to be newsworthy and/or would have never known about but due to the many technological advances and the emergence of social networks, we are inundated twenty–four–seven via social networks click bait advertising to news networks embracing social media to convey their messages using a multitude of avenues such as twitter, Facebook, and Instagram just to name a few. Whereas the media producers have responsibilities to audiences, us media users, the "audience" have our own obligations. JГјrgen Habermas's argument pertaining to democracy and media's correlation stating that "no modern political process could function without the "professionals of the media system" and the various elites who produce mediated political communication"1 did not pacify my inner beast mode. Habermas's argument is along the lines of a fascist society that we are becoming in my opinion. We are not quite there yet with the whole dictatorship per say but politicians and the media only feed the public sensationalism over truth for the most part in modern times. Being ... Presidential elections, campaigns, and policies have always been important in the media and to the public. The media creates a political world that is the basis of the public's knowledge and the later behavior, such as voting for the president or any public official. The themes and issues that are repeated in the media become important to viewers. Those that are highlighted become especially influential when it comes to choosing a candidate. The media affects evaluations of presidents. Presidential approval is strongly influenced by how the media portrays the candidate to the public. For example, during the Gulf War, George Bush received bad publicity based on his performance with the war even though his prior economic performance was exceptional. (Edwards 1999, p329) The values in which people used to evaluate him on were influenced by what the media had to say. Particular televised political advertising, televised candidate events. Though it seems to go unnoticed by most, the way that we are obtaining our information is a mere means of entertainment thanks to the universalization of media and television. Postman discusses the consequences of living in a technologically advanced age by discussing four aspects of society that are most affected: the news, religion, politics, and education. Society has shifted from words of reason and sensibility to an era with an epitome for trivial media content. Generally, the overall idea of television is not what makes it problematic for society, but the impression and loss of purpose and truth within our television programs which are to blame. Out of the four aspects mentioned, politics has to be the most corruptive towards society. Politicians are unable to express their intellectual knowledge on important issues and instead of being treated as potential political leaders, they are praised similarly to celebrities.
