Working principle
When the switch is closed:
•Current in primary coil increases
•Creates increasing magnetic field in primary coil
•Induces current in secondary coil
•Lamp lights up

When current in primary coil becomes steady:
• No more changes in the magnetic field in
primary coil
• No more current induced in secondary coil
• Lamp goes off
When switch is opened:
• Current in primary coil decreases to zero
• Creates decreasing magnetic field in primary coil
• Induces current in opposite direction in secondary coil
• Lamp lights up again
The transformer equation relates the number of turns of
wire to the difference in voltage between the primary
and secondary coils.
Vp/Vs = Np/Ns
Where :
Vp = is the voltage in the primary coil.
Vs = is the voltage in the secondary coil.
Np = is the number of turns of wire on the primary coil.
Ns = is the number of turns of wire on the secondary
coil.
Improving the efficiency of transformer:
1. Design of the core:
• Use effective soft magnetic material
• Laminated core to reduce the flow of eddy currents
• Ensure that the magnetic field produced by the
primary coil is linked completely to the secondary
coil
2. Use low-resistance copper wires to reduce losing
energy in the
form of heat
