Evaluation
Being able to critically evaluate yourself is a key skill to gain a deeper understanding
of the pre-production processes. This stage is very helpful to consider how the pre-
production process of “Educating Telford” was managed, what criteria was achieved
and what could have been done better.
Everything was finished on time without any bigger issues. I can honestly say it was
pretty straightforward and clear for each team member. The longest process was to
complete the location recce because taking all of those pictures in different locations
took a while; usually facilities were busy, but finally after patient waiting, I have
managed to successfully finish this particular document.
One of the most significant steps was logistics and finance. Logistics is very useful to
organise every minute of the media production and to provide that each member of
the crew, cast and every piece of the equipment arrives on time to the appropriate
place. Research and a detailed plan were necessary to manage this step of pre-
production as good as possible. The more you know, the more is possible to achieve.
I am also very happy with how the planning went because this process has been
analysed very accurately and even the smallest detail has been handled.
In case of finance, obviously, the best option would be to get a cheap equipment in
the excellent quality. It was a challengeable and time-consuming part, but possible to
achieve. Overall, this step of pre-production is significant, because nothing would
happen without money, so it is important to manage every detail penny to penny.
Production companies must ensure that budgets are appropriate and realistic,
because even one small misunderstanding may extend time of the production and in
the worst case – ruin it. To provide costs are realistic it was necessary to do the
research by looking at other reality tv shows’ websites, ask professionals in the
particular area and in case of the equipment, look at the prices.
Finally, Purple Goose Production has hired the equipment from the other company.
This option has been mostly satisfying. The filming process went very smoothly,
without any issues, thanks to the developed plan. Everyone was working hard, and it
was easy to notice that people do love their jobs. Each step has been done on time,
without any delays thanks to the developed production schedule; it makes me very
proud as I know I had the honour to work with such a successful team.
Every piece of documentation contains the required information and each needed
document has been included in the portfolio. It was quick to prepare all of them. I can
tell it was one of the easiest steps of the whole pre-production. Some of them
required a signature as well so it was necessary to ask the appropriate individuals for
signatures. Interview call sheets contain every required piece of information that was
clear for both parties. However, even more documents could have been included to
make every step clearer and more detailed for each team member and the client. For

example, location recces could have had more pictures and the risk assessment
included more possible hazards to ensure the maximum level of safety.
Meetings with the representative of Chanel 4 was also the very important part. It had
the biggest impact on the overall production and if it can take place. Fortunately,
everything went very well, both sides are happy after that 2-hour long discussion and
the company can treat this production as a huge success. Appointment with Mr
Hadley also has a big role in the pre-production process of “Educating Telford”. It has
provided lack of misunderstandings and satisfaction of both parties. However, the
bigger number of meetings would improve the pre-production even more.
Planning of the production budget is a very important stage as well, nothing happens
without a money. Every expense must be included in the penny. Running out of
money in the project would cause a lot of problems and the production would be
unsuccessful and wouldn’t take place at all. Copyright letter was compulsory to send
it as the company could have paid the penalty for stealing.
As the conclusion, I can say it has been a successful project. I am happy with my
planning and management skills; however, they could always be on the better level.
After this experience, I will be more prepared and confident about pre-production
processes. This evaluation has convicted me all of the strengths and weaknesses I
have done this time and made me aware what should I improve more.
