What is Universal Design?
Universal Design: in terms of education,
universal design is a way of including all students
in public education, regardless of disability,
language capability, and skill level. It is education
that is created to serve all equally from the very
beginning and does not rely on aid from extra
programs such as ESOL because these aids
were considered during the foundation of the
design
What are the Components
of Universal Design?
Provide multiple means of
representation
How teachers present information

Provide multiple means of action
and expression
How do we ask learners to
express what they know?

Provide multiple means of
engagement
How do we motivate and engage
learners?
What is the GOAL of This
Type of Instruction?
The goal of Universal
Design is to create an
education system in which
the ability to succeed is
maximized to its full
potential for all students of
any number of
backgrounds, ethnicities,
SES’s, skill levels, religions,
races, disabilities, etc.
How Can a Teacher
Implement this Idea?
A teacher can introduce Universal Design into his
or her classroom through these seven facets:
1. Class Climate
2. Interaction
3. Physical environments & products
4. Delivery methods

5. Information resources & technology
6. Feedback
7. Accommodation
