What does “Islam” mean?
The word الإسلام [Islam] is an infinitive word derived from س ل م [silm] root in if‘al pattern and used as noun and infinitive. The word silm means “release/keeping away; and to be distant from fear, doubt, trouble, lack of peace, unhappiness, fight, war, pain, suffering, material and spiritual inconveniences, weakness and decaying, and all the negativities.” This word is also the root of salim, selam, teslim, Islam etc. The word’s “Islam” form means “strengthening” [removal from problems, worries, fear, unhappiness, fights, wars, and similar negative things]. Hence, the religion Islam means the “the religion that strengthens humans [entire range of principles that protects and secures people by putting a distance between them and problems, worries, war, weakness, spiritual illness, unhappiness, and similar things].”

SURAH ASH-SHU’ARA (THE POETS)
MECCAN PERIOD
Division: 132
1Ta/9, Sin/60, Mim/40.157
2These are obviously the Ayat of the explicit/explanatory Scripture.
3They; Al-Hijr 91those who assume that the Qur’an is nothing but a compilation of
fragments that contain incantations, poems, myths, fabricated text and blasphemies;
3you may devastate yourself that they do not believe!
4Had We wished, 4We would have sent down a sign [evidence; a ray, radiation
and meteors, hurricane, flood] from the Heavens, just like what We did to Al-Hijr
90those testifiers158 that they would have prostrated to Him. 5And, have they received
a new admonition from Rahman [Allah; The One Who is the Most Merciful Towards
His Creations on the Earth] that they turn away. 6Then they indeed refuse. Soon will
come the tidings about what they have been ridiculing. Al-Hijr 92,93So, thank to your
Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] that We will surely punish
all of them for what they have done.
7And do they not look at the earth? We have made every beautiful pair grow in
many times. 8Surely, it is a sign/evidence; but they still do not believe. 9And no
doubt that, your Rabb is the Most Exalted, the Most Powerful, the Most Honorable,
the Invincible/the Subduing, the Most Merciful.
(47/26; Ash-Shu’ara/1-6 + 54/15; Al-Hijr/90-93 + Ash-Shu’ara/7-9)

10Once your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] said to
Moses: “Go to those wrongdoers; that people who act against their own good; 11the
people of the Pharaoh; will they not surrender themselves under the guardianship of
Allah?”
12Moses said: “O my Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer]! Surely I fear that they shall deny me. 13My chest tightens, my tongue falls
silent, so make Aaron a messenger as well. 14I also committed a crime against them.
therefore I fear that they shall kill me”.
15Allah said: “Certainly not as you think! Now, you both go with Our
evidence/signs. Surely, We will be with you We will hear you. 16,17Now, you both go
2. 2
to the Pharaoh and say ‘Indeed We have come here as the messengers of your Rabb
[the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] to take Israelites out with us’”.
18the Pharaoh said: “Did we not raise you among us? Did you not spend many
years of your life among us? 19Now look what you have done. You are one of those
traitors…”.
20-22Moses said: “I did it when I was one of those confused. I escaped
immediately as I feared you. Then my Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer,
the Sustainer] bestowed me laws-principles and made me one of His messengers.
And the favor you bragging me about is the fact that you made Israelites your
slaves”.
23the Pharaoh said: “What is that which you call Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher,
the Nurturer, the Sustainer] of all universes?
24Moses said: “Should you know closely; He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher,
the Nurturer, the Sustainer] of the Heavens, the Earth and all that lies between”.
25the Pharaoh said to those who surrounded him: “Do you not hear?”.
26Moses said: “He is your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] and was your ancestors’ Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] as well”.
27the Pharaoh said: “This messenger, who is sent to you, is indeed possessed by
hidden forces/a madman”.
28Moses said: “Had you used your thinking ability, you would have seen that
He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] of the East and the
West and all that lies between”.
29the Pharaoh said: “If you adopt any deity but me I swear I will make you one
of those who are imprisoned”.
30Moses said: “Even though I have brought you something manifest?”.
31the Pharaoh said: “Well, bring it forward now, if you are one of those
righteous”.
32Then Moses bring his knowledge158 forward; and suddenly the knowledge of
Moses has become a “devourer”.160
33He pulled his power out; and that power seemed perfect to the audience.161
3. 3
34,35the Pharaoh said to those chiefs who surrounded him: “He indeed is a very
wise scholar! He wants to drive you out of your land with his influential knowledge.
Now, what do you say about it?”.
36,37Chiefs said: “Hold him and his brother and send gatherers to other cities.
Make them gather all great and influential scholars here for you”.
38Thus all influential scholars were gathered together on a predetermined date.
39People were told: “Will you gather?”.
- “40In order for us to follow influential scholars, they must prevail!”-
41When influential scholars gathered, they said to the Pharaoh: “Should we
prevail, shall we receive a payment for it?”.
42the Pharaoh said: “Yes indeed, if you prevail, you surely be one of those who
are close to me”.
43Moses said to them: “Bring forward what you have”.
44Then they brought forward their knowledge, their ancient beliefs and
theses/useless; trivial knowledge162 and said to the Pharaoh ‘By the power of the
Pharaoh we surely will prevail’”.
45Thereafter, Moses brought forward his knowledge; and suddenly it devoured
their fabricated works!
46-48Then influential scholars were left there as prostrating and surrendering
believers: “We have believed Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] of all universes; Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] of Moses and Aaron”.
49the Pharaoh said: “Have you believed in him before I give you the
permission? Surely, he is your senior who taught you all this sorcery! So be it, you
will know soon! Surely I will cut your hands and feet on opposite sides, then hang
you all for sure”.
50,51Then influential scholars said: “No matter what you do, we surely turn to
our Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]. And since we are the
first believers, we hope that our Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] will forgive us; exonerate us from our sins”.
4. 4
63Then We revealed to Moses: “Hit that large body of water/river with your
knowledge!”. Then that large body of water/river was split /dams were set and each
dam became like a great mountain.163
52And We revealed to Moses: “Take My servants out by the night, you surely
are those who are chased”.
53-56Then the Pharaoh sent gatherers to other cities: “Surely they are a scattered
people of a few men. And they are indeed mad at us. We indeed are a ready and
precautious people”. 60Then the Pharaoh and his men set to chase them at the dawn.
61When two people saw each other, Companions of Moses said: “We truly are
stranded”.
62Moses said: “Certainly not as you think! Surely my Rabb [the Lord, the
Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is with me and will guide me”.
64We made others come closer to them.
65,66And We saved Moses and all his Companions, and drowned all other in the
water.
57-59In the end, We drove the Pharaoh and his people out from the gardens,
springs, treasures and that honorable position. Thus is it! And then We made
Israelites heirs/successors to them. 67Surely, it is evidence/a sign. But many of them
did not believe. 68And surely, your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] is the Most Exalted, the Most Powerful, the Most Honorable, the
Invincible/the Subduer, the Most Merciful.164
(47/26, Ash-Shu’ara/10-51, 63, 52-56, 60-66, 57-59, 67-68)

69And recite to them the story of Abraham!
70When he said to his father and his people: “Why do you worship165?”.
71And they said to him: “We worship some idols and we will continue to
worship them”.
72-74Abraham said: “Do they hear you when you call them or do they make any
good ro bad to you?”
75,76Abraham said: “Have you ever thought about what you and your ancestors
worshipped? 77They are my enemies; all but Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the
Nurturer, the Sustainer] of all universes. 78-82He is the One Who created me. And the
One Who guides me to the righteous path. And He is the One Who makes me eat and
5. 5
drink. He is the One Who heals me when I am sick. And He is the One Who will kill
and resurrect me. And He is the One Who, I hope, will forgive me for my sins and
faults on the Day of Recompense. 83O my Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the
Nurturer, the Sustainer]! ‘Judge’ me and make me one of those righteous! 84And then
make me one of those who will be honored by the next generations! 85And make me
one of the inheritors of the Jannah [Heaven/Paradise] where all your blessings are in
abundances! 86And forgive my father as well for he indeed was one of those
transgressors. 87-91And do not disgrace me on the Day of Resurrection; on that Day
when wealth and sons will not provide benefit for anyone but those who come there
with a sound heart/a true faith and only those who surrendered themselves under the
guardianship of Allah will be close to Jannah [Heaven/Paradise], and when Jahannah
[Hell] will break open upon those transgressors!”.
(47/26; Ash-Shu’ara/69-91)
Division: 135
92,93And they shall be told: “Where are those things you used to worship that
are inferior to Allah? Can they help you or provide benefits for you now?”.
94,95Then idols and transgressors and the soldiers of Iblis/thinking ability; those
who acted without contemplating will be thrown into the fires of Jahannah [Hell].
96-102And while disputing among themselves they said: “Truly we have been
transgressing. Then we assumed them at the same level with Rabb [the Lord, the
Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] of all universes. And those sinners led us
astray from the righteous path. Now we have no helpers, no intercessors nor a close
friend or a candid assistant or a guide or a protector. O woe to us! If only we had a
way to return to past and become one of those believers!”.
103Surely, it is evidence/a sign. But most of them were not believers.
104And no doubt that your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] is the Most Exalted, the Most Powerful, the Most Honorable, the
Invincible/the Subduer, the Most Merciful.

105People of Noah denied those who were sent to them [messengers, messages].
6. 6
106-110When their brother Noah said to them: “Will you not surrender
yourselves under the guardianship of Allah? Indeed I am a trustworthy messenger for
you. So, surrender yourselves under the guardianship of Allah and obey me. I
demand no fee for this. My payment can only be made by Rabb [the Lord, the
Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] of all universes. Now, surrender yourselves
under the guardianship of Allah and obey me!”.
111They said: “Do you think that we would believe you when only the most
lesser ones follow you?”.
112-115Noah said: “I do not have an idea about what they do. Only my Rabb [the
Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] can judge them. If you think! I am
not the one to drive the believers away. I only am a Warner”.
116And they said: “O Noah! If you do not revoke, be sure that you will be one
of those who were stoned to death!”.
117,118Noah said: “O my Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer]! My people have denied me. Then judge between me and them. And save
me and those believers who have followed me!”.
119, 120Thereafter, We saved him and those who were with him while they were
in that crowded ship. Then We drowned those who were left behind in the water.
121Surely, it is evidence/a sign. But most of them were not believers. 122And no
doubt that your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] is the
Most Exalted, the Most Powerful, the Most Honorable, the Invincible/the Subduer,
the Most Merciful.

123People of Ad denied those who were sent to them [messengers, messages].
124-135When their brother Hud [Eber] said to them: “Will you not surrender
yourselves under the guardianship of Allah? Indeed I am a trustworthy messenger for
you. So, surrender yourselves under the guardianship of Allah and obey me. I
demand no fee for this. My payment can only be made by Rabb [the Lord, the
Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] of all universes. Do you entertain yourselves
by constructing a building at every hill as a sign? And do you build such places that
produce industries [factories/castles] to become eternal/as if they shall make you
eternal? And when you seize, do you seize like tyrants? So, surrender yourselves
under the guardianship of Allah and obey me. So, surrender yourselves under the
7. 7
guardianship of the One Who gives you all what you know [cattle, sons, orchards,
gardens, springs]. Surely I fear about your punishment you will get on the great day”.
136-138And they said: “It is same for us whether you advise or you are not one of
those advisers. This is only the lifestyle of the ancients. And we will not be
punished”.
139Then they denied him and We manipulated/destroyed them. Surely it is
evidence/a sign, but most of them were not believers.
140And no doubt that your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] is the Most Exalted, the Most Powerful, the Most Honorable, the
Invincible/the Subduer, the Most Merciful.

141People of Thamud denied those who were sent to them [messengers,
messages].
142-152 When their brother Salih said to them: “Will you not surrender
yourselves under the guardianship of Allah? Indeed I am a trustworthy messenger for
you. So, surrender yourselves under the guardianship of Allah and obey me. I
demand no fee for this. My payment can only be made by Rabb [the Lord, the
Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] of all universes. Will you be kept here; in
these gardens, springs, crops and among the palm trees, with ripe dates? And you
master at carving houses into the mountains. So, surrender yourselves under the
guardianship of Allah and obey me. And do not follow those transgressors who do
not rehabilitate but make mischief on the earth”.
153,154And they said: “You truly are one of those who are possessed! You are
just a human as we are. If you are one of those righteous, then show us evidence/a
sign”.
155,156Salih said: “This is a social support institution, to maintain it
contributions should be made, you should reserve a part of your income for it.
Sustain it. Otherwise, wrath of the great day will seize you”.
157Despite this, they terminated the social support institution by depleting its
resources and then overnighted in regret.166
158Then, wrath seized them. Surely, it is a big lesson but most of them did not
believe.
8. 8
159 And no doubt that your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] is the Most Exalted, the Most Powerful, the Most Honorable, the
Invincible/the Subduer, the Most Merciful.

160People of Lot denied those who were sent to them [messengers, messages].
161-166When their brother Lot said to them: “Will you not surrender yourselves
under the guardianship of Allah? Indeed I am a trustworthy messenger for you. So,
surrender yourselves under the guardianship of Allah and obey me. I demand no fee
for this. My payment can only be made by Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the
Nurturer, the Sustainer] of all universes. Do you leave your partners Allah created for
you and approach men? Truly, you are a transgressing people”.
167They said: “O Lot! If you do not revoke, you will surely be one of those who
are evicted”.
168Lot said: “Surely I am one of those who detest what you do”.
- 169O my Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]!Save
me and my family from what they do! –
170-172Then We saved him and all his family – except the despicable old woman
who was among those who remained – and then destroyed/manipulated all those left
behind. 173And We rained upon them such a rain! Behold! Evil is the rain pouring
upon those who were warned!
174Surely, it is evidence/a sign. But most of them were not believers.
175And no doubt that your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] is the Most Exalted, the Most Powerful, the Most Honorable, the
Invincible/the Subduer, the Most Merciful.

176Companions of the Thicket denied those who were sent to them
[messengers, messages].
177-184When Shu’ayb [Jethro] said to them: “Will you not surrender yourselves
under the guardianship of Allah? Indeed I am a trustworthy messenger for you. So,
9. 9
surrender yourselves under the guardianship of Allah and obey me. I demand no fee
for this. My payment can only be made by Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the
Nurturer, the Sustainer] of all universes. Do the weighing and measuring accurately,
do not deprive people from their due rights, do not make mischief on the earth
causing chaos. And surrender yourselves under the guardianship of that Person Who
created you and the generations before you”.
185-187And they said: “You truly are one of those who are possessed! You are
just a human as we are. If you are one of those righteous, then make a piece of the
Heavens fall upon us!”.
188Shu’ayb [Jethro] said: “My Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] knows the best what you do”.
189Then they denied him so the wrath of that shadowy day seized them. Surely
it was the wrath of a great day.
190Surely, it is evidence/a sign. But most of them were not believers.
191And no doubt that your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the
Sustainer] is the Most Exalted, the Most Powerful, the Most Honorable, the
Invincible/the Subduer, the Most Merciful.
(47/26; Ash-Shu’ara/176-191)
Division: 141
192And surely, this clear scripture is sent down by Rabb [the Lord, the
Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] of all universes.
193-195The Trustworthy Soul [divine messages, trustworthy knowledge] has
been sent down into your heart in Arabic to make you one of those Warners with this
Scripture. 196And surely, the Trustworthy Soul [divine messages, trustworthy
knowledge] was in the Scriptures that had been sent to those before you as well.
197And has it not been evidence/a sign for the scholars of Israelites that they
know about the existence of the Trustworthy Soul in their own Scriptures?
198,199And had We sent down the Scripture to anyone from the foreigners/those
who cannot speak Arabic and he had read it, they would not have believed it.
200,201Thus We inserted it into the hearts of those sinners. They shall not believe
it until they see the painful wrath.
(47/26; Ash-Shu’ara/192-201)
10. 10
Division: 142
202And it will come to them suddenly while they do not realize.
203Then they shall say: “Shall we be granted respite?”.
204Do they wish us to hasten Our punishment?
205-207Do you see/have you ever thought that if We give them revenues for
years and when the day they have been promised comes, those revenues they
received will not benefit to them.
208And We only manipulated/destroyed those cities to which Warners were
sent.
209An admonition! And We are not unjust.
210And obviously, it was not devils who inserted the explanatory scriptures into
your heart.
211It does not suit to them, and they are not capable of doing this.
212Surely, they are kept away from the hearing/revelation.
213Then do call to none other but Allah or you will be one of those who are
punished. 214And warn your closest kinsmen. 215And lower your wings for those
believers who follow you. 216If they rebel against you, say: “Surely I am away from
what you do”. 217-219And transfer them to the One, the Most Exalted, the Most
Powerful, the Most Honorable, the Invincible/the Subduer, the Most Merciful Who
sees you when you rise/come out to perform your messenger duties and walk among
those who surrendered and prostrated.
220He surely hears the best and knows the best.
221Shall I tell you for whom devils descend/upon whom they impose evil
notions? 222Devils descend for all slanderer sinners/impose upon them evil notions.
223They convey hearings but most of them are liars. –An-Anml 6Surely the Qur’an is
being imposed upon you by Allah, the Law-Maker and Who Knows the Best.168
224And those poets; only transgressing perverts will follow them.
225,226Do you not see/have you ever not thought about that they wander in each
valley aimlessly and telling stories about what they have not done? 227Except for
those who believe and act corrective deeds, who remember and recite the name of
11. 11
Allah often and who defend themselves when being acted unjustly. Those who act
unjustly will soon know what they shall be turned.

157 See Footnote No. 8
158 The “witnesses” mentioned herein are the same witnesses mentioned in the Division 6
(2/68, Al-Qalam/17-33). 90th and 93th Ayat of the Surah Al-Hijr in the Official Mushaf are not
technically and semantically connected to their assigned place. As a consequence of our
comprehensive studies, we have humbly determined the actual place of these Ayat to be the preamble
of the Surah Ash-Shu’ara. Therefore, we examined these Ayat within the scope of the preamble of the
Surah Ash-Shu’ara.
159 See Footnote No. 107
160 See Footnote No. 108
161 See Footnote No. 109
162 See Footnote No. 149
163 What explained here is that Moses was revealed to build dams over the river that
would collapse in the future to drown Pharaoh and his soldiers. What narrated in these Ayat is that
Moses was revealed to build dams over the Nile using his knowledge and then the water was divided
into parts as the mountains; i.e. high dams were built. Oldest known dam was the 15 meters high
“Sadd Al-Kafarah” that was built over the Nile between ca. 2900-2750 B.C. According to an explicit
account found in the Qur’an, there were multiple dams rather than one.
Scenes depicting the collapse of the dam and Pharaoh drowning can be found in the Official
Mushaf: Surat Ad-Dukhan/23-24, Al-Qasas/40, Adh-Dhariyat/40.
164 The passage of the Official Mushaf that contain 52nd and 67th Ayat does have a
problem. We rearranged the Ayat contained in this passage in the following order: “63, 52-56, 60-66,
57-59, 67”.
165 See Footnote No. 21
166 Literal meaning of the 155th and 157th Ayat that are contained in the paragraph is He
[Salih] said:This is a she-camel; she has the right to drink, and the right to drink for a specific day is
yours, do not touch her with harm or the wrath of a great day seizes you”. Despite this, they killed the
she-camel by cutting her shins and overnighted in regret. Salat and zaqat are used symbolically.
Footnote No. 66 should also be referred.
167 See Footnote No. 87
168 The Ayah An-Naml/6, as mentioned in the Official Mushaf, has been rearranged
between the Ayat 223 and 224 pursuant to the context.
