2. Using the Promethean Board and
Activote System
Using the Activotes I was able to see who understood
and who was sturggling.
3. Learning Objective
The Objective comes from the Utah State Core for 3rd
Grade:
Standard Viii, Objective 4, Indicator c.
c. Edit for standard grammar
Learning Objective: Students will know what a pronoun
is and how to use one.
4. Pronouns!
After watching a short clip from “Grammar Rock” on
Pronouns (which also involved technology) I wanted to
make sure that the students would be able to match the
pronoun with nouns that they go with. So we pulled out
the Activotes and the class voted on the one they
believed to be correct and we were able to check our
answers.
5. Picture of the Lesson
Here I am in the front of the room and we can see the results on the board.
6. Another Shot of the Lesson
Here I am pointing at the correct answer to the pronoun question.
7. Reflection
The Students LOVED using the ActiVotes – as it is
something that they do not get to use everyday. I
believe it helped me as the teacher to see where the
students were and what they were thinking.
The only “bad” thing I experienced is a couple of the
students were unwilling to keep their hands off of them!
8. 1. Student Use of Technology
Each and every student in the class was able to
participate in technology! They all had the ActiVote in
front of them and actively participated by voting for
what they felt was the correct answer.
During another part of the lesson, I had students come
up to the board and pick what they felt was the correct
answer to “fill in the blank” which was also students
using technology.
9. 2. Technology Use is Essential
The activity performed here would have been much
more difficult to perform as efficiently as it was done
here WITH the technology. This is because students
were able to vote for what they believed was the best
answer and I was able to immediately see who voted for
which answer. This could have been done with individual
whiteboards – but then you run the risk of students
looking at each others’ boards and not getting an
accurate idea of what the class members are thinking.
10. 3. Focus on Learning Task
I believe that the focus truly was on the learning task. I
wanted those students to learn about pronouns. The
technology provided a quick and efficient method for
me to see that all of the students were
understanding…or at least a majority of the class. It also
gave me an opportunity to know which students were
struggling a little – the ActiVotes were assigned to
specific students with a number – and the results of the
voting session was saved on my computer so I could go
back and see who struggled.
11. 4. Added Value
If it is true that time = money then there was a TON of
added value! Without the technology we would have
had to pass out papers and then collect them and I
would have to go over them in order to assess how the
class was responding to the lesson – however – even
after the Promethean Board lesson, there was still a
worksheet. I just wanted to set the students up to be
successful in the assignment – and technology was the
way to do that!
