  1. 1. Instructional Multimedia Project By Chris Rierson

Area Unit <ul><li>This is a one week unit for my instructional Geometry class for high school students. </li></ul><ul><li>It will include a few different lessons that incorporate technology into them. </li></ul><ul><li>Students will be learning what area is and how to apply it to real life scenarios. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Day 1: Introduce Formulas <ul><li>Day 1 lesson will be about introducing the material to the students. I will have a power point put together introducing each of the shapes we will be working with this week. I will also show a short video to the students on how area is used everyday around the world. We will talk about area and how it is used in real life scenarios. The students will have to think of times or scenarios where area measurement might be used in real life. </li></ul><ul><li>Video: </li></ul>

Day 2: Web Quest on Area Formulas <ul><li>On day 2 of the area unit the students will be in the math library at school working on a web quest in which they will have to use the formulas they learned the day before to find the area of the objects given. The students will be playing a few games on the web quest and will have to follow the instructions in order to solve the problems correctly. The students will be assessed on whether they could complete the little games without help from the teacher or a partner. They will also be assessed on whether they were able to complete all the tasks. </li></ul><ul><li>Link to web quest: </li></ul>
  5. 5. Day 3-5: Designing a House <ul><li>On day 3 the students will work on another web quest project. The students will partner up and design a house and find the area of each room so they can order carpet or put tile down in their house. They will be creating a floor plan for their house where they will have to find the area and perimeter of each room. Then for extra credit they can add a fence around their house to keep their pets in the yard. They can also add a pool in the backyard as well. Once they are done creating their floor plan they will have to go to the website on the web quest and design their floor plan in 3D. They will turn in a formula sheet with all the areas and perimeters and also a print out of their floor plan from the online floor plan website. </li></ul><ul><li>Web quest: </li></ul>
  6. 6. TIP Model: Phase 1 <ul><li>This unit follows the six phases of the TIP model. The first phase of the TIP model is for me to self assess my knowledge domains. I feel pretty comfortable in knowing the content and pedagogy of this unit on area. I have been teaching this material for two years now and have mastered the content. Teaching my students how to use this technology will be a challenge at first but in the end I see myself being successful with this. I feel very good about my knowledge of technology and using some different technology ideas in my classroom. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Phase 2 <ul><li>The second phase is about why I should use a technology based method? I have noticed that in years past and with this current class that I teach, that they are struggling with certain concepts. In particular they are struggling with area and finding area for different shapes. So I have found a few web quests and videos for them to see in order to help them understand it more. I also notice that a lot of my students don’t see the connection between the concepts and real life applications so this technology based method will help them make the connection. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Phase 3 <ul><li>The third phase is how I will know if the students have learned or not. I will be able to check their work on the floor plans and from the first web quest to see that they comprehend the concepts and formulas. These two activities will show me who can use the methods appropriately and who can’t. I will use the rubric that comes with the two different web quests and give them a grade based on that. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Phase 4 <ul><li>The fourth phase is how I designed the lessons and what strategies will work best. I have decided to teach the first lesson by direct instruction this way I am showing them the different formulas to find area and how to apply it. The next lesson they will individually be given an opportunity to show me what they remember from the previous lesson and complete a simple web quest. The third and final lesson of the week they will work with partners to see what they both remember and apply it to a real life situation. They will be forced to work as a team and create something together. I have selected this as the final lesson so they learn to work as a team and have someone to help themselves with the technology part of the lesson. They will be able to problem solve together and come up with a final product together. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Phase 5 <ul><li>The fifth phase is about the essential conditions that need to be in order to support technology integration. I as the teacher will make sure that each student has access to a computer and is able to work through a web quest. Students should be familiar with web quests because they are used a lot in our school. I will also make sure that there is enough time allowed for students to complete their assignments. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Phase 6 <ul><li>The sixth phase will be about what worked well and what could be improved. I will review data and make notes about the experience to see what could be changed for next time. I will also give out a short survey to each student to see how they liked working with the technology. I will use their suggestions to make corrections for the next year or next web quest we do. </li></ul>
  12. 12. Purpose of Unit <ul><li>This unit is designed for students to be exposed to technology and use technology to help them understand area a lot easier. I also want them to use technology to get a better understanding of how this concept works in the real world. My goal is for them to understand the concept and to be able to explore a safe technology environment. The students will not only be learning math concepts on the computer but they will be learning how search on the internet safely for specific websites and also how to use programs like word and power point as well. </li></ul>
