Definition of fasting in Islam:
•LITERAL MEANING :
‘to refrain’ and here it means
abstaining from food, drinks, smoking,
intravenous fluids and oral
medications, and sexual activity from
sunrise to sunset.
Definition of fasting in Islam:
TECHNICAL MEANING :
in the language used in the Quran and the
records of Prophet Muhammad sayings, Peace
and blessings be upon Him, it signifies the
conscious abstinence/refrain from the cravings of
carnal soul by willingly abstaining from food,
drinks and sexual intercourse from the break of
dawn until sunset in order to maintain spiritual
discipline and self-control.

The translation :
O you who have believed, decreed upon you
is fasting as it was decreed upon those before
you that you may become righteous -
SCOPE OF DISCUSSION
The benefit of sawm on medical
perspective towards human’s body
system, it consists of :
•Digestive system
•Blood sugar level
•Body Weight
Digestive system
When you fast, it gives your body a break
from constantly needing to digest, which
lowers the amount of time you need to deal
with digestive distress symptoms.
When you fast, it will increase the interval
between food intakes you will give your body
more time to regenerate.
Our body spends about 35% of its energy on
digestion of food. So when you stop eating
you give your body 35% more energy to
cleanse and repair.
Digestive system
 Microbes inside the human body come in
all shapes and sizes and include bacteria,
viruses, fungi, amoebae,etc.
They can change how we metabolize food
and can even help tell our brains whether
we are hungry or satiated.
Digestive system during the entire length
of fasting falls into a deep sleep. All the
microbiome that lives inside you does not
die, just falls into a hibernation.
•When fasting the hormone
glucagon is stimulated and this
increases plasma glucose levels in
the body.
•If a patient doesn’t have diabetes,
their body will produce insulin to
rebalance the increased glucose
levels.
BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL
•In normal individuals, there is a slight
fall in average blood glucose levels in
the first few days of Ramadan fasting
followed by normalization by about
the 20th day.
• Relatively slight increase later, but all
these variations are well within the
normal physiological range.
BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL
• In diabetics who fasted during
Ramadan, some reports have shown
no change, or a decrease, or even a
slight increase in body weights.
•Perhaps due to the variations in the
life style changes practiced by these
persons especially in regard to quality
and quantity of food intake and the
level of physical activities.
What happens to your body when you fast during
Ramadan ?

weight loss is reported by
most people who fast.”

BODY WEIGHT
• Once the body has used up
its reserves of glucose, it
burns fat for energy, which
can result in some weight
loss.
HOWEVER ….
BODY WEIGHT
•Have reported no change in body
weight during Ramadan.
•In fact, one study carried out in
Saudi Arabia reported a significant
increase in body weight during
Ramadan.
• Such variations may be attributable
to local custom and food quality.
•During this period, richer meals and
special treats are not uncommon in
households that can afford them.
Remember…
Fasting isn’t about to lose your
weight,
it’s about to lose your sin.

  • 2. Definition of fasting in Islam: •LITERAL MEANING : ‘to refrain’ and here it means abstaining from food, drinks, smoking, intravenous fluids and oral medications, and sexual activity from sunrise to sunset.
  • 3. Definition of fasting in Islam: TECHNICAL MEANING : in the language used in the Quran and the records of Prophet Muhammad sayings, Peace and blessings be upon Him, it signifies the conscious abstinence/refrain from the cravings of carnal soul by willingly abstaining from food, drinks and sexual intercourse from the break of dawn until sunset in order to maintain spiritual discipline and self-control.

  • 6. SCOPE OF DISCUSSION The benefit of sawm on medical perspective towards human’s body system, it consists of : •Digestive system •Blood sugar level •Body Weight
  • 7. Digestive system When you fast, it gives your body a break from constantly needing to digest, which lowers the amount of time you need to deal with digestive distress symptoms. When you fast, it will increase the interval between food intakes you will give your body more time to regenerate. Our body spends about 35% of its energy on digestion of food. So when you stop eating you give your body 35% more energy to cleanse and repair.
  • 8. Digestive system  Microbes inside the human body come in all shapes and sizes and include bacteria, viruses, fungi, amoebae,etc. They can change how we metabolize food and can even help tell our brains whether we are hungry or satiated. Digestive system during the entire length of fasting falls into a deep sleep. All the microbiome that lives inside you does not die, just falls into a hibernation.
  • 9. •When fasting the hormone glucagon is stimulated and this increases plasma glucose levels in the body. •If a patient doesn’t have diabetes, their body will produce insulin to rebalance the increased glucose levels. BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL
  • 10. •In normal individuals, there is a slight fall in average blood glucose levels in the first few days of Ramadan fasting followed by normalization by about the 20th day. • Relatively slight increase later, but all these variations are well within the normal physiological range.   • 11. • In diabetics who fasted during Ramadan, some reports have shown no change, or a decrease, or even a slight increase in body weights. •Perhaps due to the variations in the life style changes practiced by these persons especially in regard to quality and quantity of food intake and the level of physical activities.

  • 14. BODY WEIGHT • Once the body has used up its reserves of glucose, it burns fat for energy, which can result in some weight loss.

BODY WEIGHT •Have reported no change in body weight during Ramadan. •In fact, one study carried out in Saudi Arabia reported a significant increase in body weight during Ramadan. • Such variations may be attributable to local custom and food quality. •During this period, richer meals and special treats are not uncommon in households that can afford them.
