2. THE BACKGROUND
I started with a
background colour and
erased the edges to give
it a ‘rock’ edge
Next, I added a
gradient to give
the background a
light to dark
effect. I think this
looks more
professional and
emphasizes
aspects hence
doing it. Finally, I added a texture to the background to give it a
darker, rock atmosphere. I did this by using different
brushes to create darker and lighter tones, then putting the
layer into overlay so it’s placed over the background and
3. Main image
Given the quality of
photography, there was
little I had to do to the
main image. The only
thing I did was brush
over with the spot
healing brush, to
remove some of his
facial deformities.
4. Masthead
The font for the
masthead was given
a texture to make it
appropriate for the
target audience,
through this, it adds
to the atmosphere of
rock. Simply, this was
created by using
erasers, carefully,
scratching in the
lines. The burn tool
was also used to give
it dark tones to
5. Plugs
This is a sticker I
made to promote
and emphasize the
purpose of the
magazine. As it has
the name just, I ran
with the idea it could
apply to a number of
genre’s and thus, my
magazine was
talking from a rock
The next plug created was to promote features within
the magazine or simply, a review of guitar playing
equipment. To create this, I first got the two images of
guitar pedals, cut them out and added a stroke layer to
them to make them stand out. Then, I created a box for
the text to go on. This was simple a box, with a 3d layer
to make it stand out and some red air brush paint to add
an aged effect. I then cut it through the middle, simply,
to make it look interesting on the page. Finally, I added
a colorful layer underneath the word ‘pedal’. To achieve
this, I experimented with paint and duplicated layers,
erased them and experimenting with layer order and
‘overlay’ to get my final product.
6. More plugs
This plug, again, was to promote
things within the magazine. Firstly, I
created the poster look like to
contain the words. The poster was
simple, to some extent, it was just a
white box that I erased on the
edges to give it a torn effect. The
black lines and text are self
explanatory. Then, the picture was
used as a sample of the ‘posters’
inside. The photograph was taken
by myself and I wanted to make it
look like a polaroid so thus, added
a white background box to the back
7. Text boxes
Another features was
the text boxes seen
around the page.
Simple, this was a
rectangle shape using
the shape tool with an
added 3d / shadow
layer, in black.
