Pros And Cons Of Parapsychology
The perception of color is a phenomenon in itself. Interpretations of color shading and saturation depend on how light reflects off of it and how light
is absorbed. Color interpretation is subjective to each individual based on the response frequency of neurons in an individual's eyes. Cones are the
specific type of neurons that are responsible for color vision; these neurons are extremely active during high levels of light. The way that color is
presented and depicted can have varying effects in how our brains perceive the area it is in. If a color looks particularly dark, the brain may
interpret as the space an individual is in is dimly lit. Another way color may be presented is as light itself. The color of light may illuminate an object
and change the object's color. Similarly, the color of the light may completely diminish any aspect of contour, surface, and tone of an object. Thus,
making an object "disappear". A famous experiment from the 1930s called The Ganzfeld Phenomenon uses this technique of light and color to elicit
altered states of consciousness. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Ganzfeld experiment is labeled under another category of psychology called parapsychology. Parapsychology focuses on the study of paranormal
phenomenons (The Parapsychological Association). The original intent of this experiment was made to test telepathy and other extrasensory
perceptions (Bem, 1996). The precursor before the Ganzfeld experiment was done to test telepathy as an individual was asleep in the REM stage. An
individual, the receiver, would sleep and brain activity was recorded. As the receiver went through REM sleep, another individual labeled as the
sender would focus on an image. The precursor experiment had hopes for the receiver to be able to describe the image the sender was focusing on.
With the same concept, the Ganzfeld experiment was

Nostradamus Predictions
Since the beginning of time, people have been attempting to catch a glimpse of the future. Coney Island fortune tellers and the likes have profited
greatly off people's fascination with what comes next. Although a sideshow performer is unlikely to predict any world events, other better qualified
clairvoyants already have. For example, Nostradamus is famed for his future predictions, such as nearly writing Hitler's name in a notebook years
before he came to power. One woman is known as the Nostradamus of the Balkans for her many prophecies about the future. Prophetess Vanga, better
known as Baba Vanga, predicted a great deal about our future, and some of these predictions may be coming true.
Prophetess Vanga was born in Strumica, Bulgaria, modern day Macedonia, on January first, 1911 (Daily Musings 1). When she was twelve–years–old,
Vanga was lost in a sandy field for days after a tornado ripped through her home. After several days, she was found alive, but her eyes were badly
damaged from the earth blown into them. The ordeal blinded Vanga and she began going to attending a school for the blind in 1925 (Mishkov 2). In

She predicted that by 4302 civilization will have a cure for all disease, probably by replacing diseased parts with perfect clones (Prophecies 2). By
beating all disease, people would achieve immortality. Although obtaining a cure for every disease and malfunction seems impossible, if doctors
were able to replace any and every piece of diseased or damaged tissue with an exact copy of healthy tissue, there is no reason to believe people
could not live forever. For example, a woman with breast cancer could have per breasts replaced with perfect clones made in an organ printer.
Additionally, an elderly man suffering from Alzheimer's disease could have the deteriorated brain matter replenished. The possibilities would be

Secrets Of The Psychics Analysis
The documentary, "Secrets of the Psychics", was an interesting experiment that seemed to expose the powers people claim they have. Randi has
many claims that explains that it takes a lot of talent to make someone believe in a person's abilities. I was interested in how he says it takes the
audience to believe what they see to create psychic powers. When James was palm reading he told the participant the opposite of what he was
reading. She somehow believed him and tricked her into thinking what he was saying was true. I think of it as a placebo effect. A person will try to
find truth in the ability somehow, even if it is not exactly correct. I loved how Randi was able to duplicate experiments that are used by psychics daily.

Perception And Perception Of An Event And It Later Comes...
Have you ever had a vision about an event and it later comes true? Have you ever been able to read another individual's thoughts? If so, you may
possess extrasensory perception. Extrasensory perception is the "ability to obtain information about the world around you without using the normal five
senses of sight, touch, taste, hearing and smell" (Extrasensory Perception [APA], n.d.). There are many theories on extrasensory perception, including
that "all humans have some degree of extrasensory perception and that we involuntarily experience extrasensory perception on several occasions"
(Extrasensory Perception [APA], n.d.). In other words, many individuals believe that all humans have the potential for extrasensory perception, but some

Joseph Rhine was a professor at Duke University, at the time, where he conducted numerous experiments that concluded the existence of the sixth
sense, extrasensory perception. In these experiments, Rhine designed a set of twenty–five cards, later known as Zener cards, that consisted of four
different designs: a circle, wave, square, and cross. Two participants were required for this experiment, which included a transmitter and receiver. In
an experiment testing telepathy, the transmitter would look at a string of cards while the receiver would try to guess the symbols of the cards. Since
each deck of cards contained five cards of each design, each participant has a one in five chance of guessing the pattern on a card. Rhine came to the
conclusion that with "random guessing you yield five hits per deck of twenty–five" (Extrasensory Perception [APA], n.d.). Moreover, any individual
who was above the level of five hits, possessed some ability of extrasensory perception. When Rhine was testing clairvoyance, the deck of cards was
concealed, while the receiver tried to guess the design on the cards. In 1970, Charles Honorton used the Ganzfeld Technique. Honorton's experiment
required two participants, a receiver and a transmitter. The receiver is placed in a room filled with red light with white noise playing in the
background, referred to as the Ganzfeld state. The receiver has their eyes covered with halved ping–pong balls,

Relationship Between Repetition And The Belief Of...
ABSTRACT
This experiments looks at the relationship between repetition and the belief in Extrasensory Perception (ESP). People who believe in ESP are
referred to as 'sheep' and those who do not are referred to as 'goats'. This is the sheep–goat effect. The sheep are more likely to avoid giving repetitions
than the goats that have a low belief in ESP. A total of one hundred and eighty five participants took part in this study by imagining that they had a
dice that they had to roll. They had to provide the experimenter with an imaginary number between one and six which would be repeated and
recorded a total of 67 times. Once this had been completed a questionnaire was given in which they had to rate their belief in ESP on a scale of one
(strong belief) and six (strong disbelief). In order to test the hypothesis, data was collected and then analysed in order to find out the number of
repetitions that occurred. This experiment consisted of three groups of people; the sheep, the goats, and those that were indifferent. The results
obtained proved our hypothesis as the goats made a larger amount of repetitions than the sheep did.
INTRODUCTION
Extrasensory Perception is the belief in being able to perceive things from ways other than using our original 5 senses. Examples of ESP are
clairvoyance and telepathy. This experiment provides us with the relevant evidence in order for us to prove that there is a relationship between
repetition and Extrasensory Perception. This study was

Pros And Cons Of Neutralizing Deviance
Not only has the use of psychics skyrocketed, but their acts of paranormal deviance has allowed the craft to grow into five subtypes: Charismatic,
Intraorganizational, Cross–Organizational, Interoganizational and Charlatans. While doing so, Psychics have used two distinct methods as a facade
to obtain the appearance of a legitimate career. The first method, known as neutralizing deviance is defined as "people and groups especially those
dealing with a devalued social identity, seek to control the impressions they convey. They do this to neutralize negative images and create a favorable
view in order to gain social acceptance" (Goffman as cited in Hodges & Ulsperger, 2005, p. 35). It has been shown that Interorganizational Psychics

Parapsychology: Practically Pseudoscience In Every Way
Parapsychology: Practically Pseudoscience in Every Way. What is Parapsychology? According to Jean Saindon, Parapsychology is the scientific study
if psychic phenomena. This can include areas such as ghosts/haunted houses, spiritualism, hypnosis, mediums and sГ©ances and/or intuition
(Saindon,13). Although Parapsychology may seem like a science to some, there are many cases that prove that this is in fact a pseudoscience instead
of an actual science itself. Firstly, in terms of what can be categorized as science and what cannot be, parapsychology definitely falls under the
category of pseudoscience based on the Scientific Criteria of Evaluation. Secondly, the field of Parapsychology has been known to have many
cases of fraud in their studies. Finally, in terms of evidence, it follows pseudoscience because the evidence is not specific or valid to be claimed as
science, therefore Parapsychology can be regarded as a pseudoscience and that fact can be backed up accordingly. The definition of Science "is to
look at the natural world in naturalistic terms" (Saindon) and the Criteria for Scientific Evaluation doesn't exactly correspond with the field of
parapsychology. Starting off, the data behind parapsychology is not listed as well as it should be. For example, the Criterion for Scientific
Evaluation asks "how accurate and precise are the claims?" (Saindon) If we were to apply this to cases such as the Fox sisters, then we would see that
it is not very precise or accurate

My Development As A Psychologist
Chapter 42
Dr Gordon Mangan
Dr Mangan was far more influential in my development as a psychologist than I realised when I was a student. I must confess that I didn't warm to
him as a teacher. When I peruse his publications it seems amazing that I cant find a full biography or bibliography of Mangan anywhere on the net. I
am happy to fill that gap now. It is high time.
Dr Mangan has a rare scientific talent that enables him to originate and follow uncommon ideas to their conclusion and then substantiate his remarkable
ideas with clear theorising and hard experimental data.
An overview of his publications might lead to the impression that he deliberately chose areas that were neglected and controversial. He devoted half a
decade of his early career to parapsychology, publishing innovative research and clearheaded reviews. He devoted the later part of his career to
research in smoking – funded by the tobacco industry.
He had a lasting interest in Russian psychology particularly Pavlov and the neo–Pavlovians. A considerable amount of his work is devoted to drawing
parallels between Eastern and Western conceptualisations of personality, learning and arousal which culminated in an influential book "The Biology of
Human Conduct: East–West Models of Temperament and Personality".
As well as these three areas he published on a broad range of topics including intelligence, aging, learning, conflict, behaviour therapy, personality,
attention, music and arousal.

The Belief of Reincarnation
Paranormal is defined as the denoting of events or phenomena that are beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding. Scientists, researchers,
and analysts have and are still trying to find logical solutions for unnatural things occurring. Parapsychology is a subject that sparks the interests of
people all over the world and accurate analysis of it is yet to be found. Parapsychological Association (2011) says, "Parapsychology is the scientific and
scholarly study of three kinds of unusual events (ESP, mind–matter interaction, and survival), which are associated with human experience...The
existence of these phenomena suggests the strict subjective/objective dichotomy proposed by the old paradigm may not be quite as clear–cut as once ...

Reincarnation is accepted in different parts of the country. The Question of Reincarnation says, "In the twentieth century, it is undeniably accepted
among most religions of the East...In the West, mainstream religions and churches shy away from any discussion or belief in the cycle of rebirth"
(2001). A recent studied revealed most Americans believe in reincarnation.
When it comes to the unnatural side of things, people tend not to believe in it unless there is scientific proof. To deny the existence of reincarnation
because there is no concrete proof is unfair because many other spiritual and religious teachings have yet to be proven but there is so much belief in
such things (The Question of Reincarnation: Part One, 2001). The Question of Reincarnation says, "The fact of reincarnation makes more sense and
is more in line with natural law than the myth of it", the reasons were because, "Reincarnation follows the universal Law of Cycles; Reincarnation is
a wonderful demonstration of God's grace and our ability to correct that which needs to be corrected; It seems inconceivable that we can master the
lower aspects of the personality in one earthly lifetime; and Reincarnation helps explain the appearance of evil in a world guided by a loving God"
(2001).

Dream Interpretation Research Paper
Dream interpretation is an old tradition that dates back at least as far as Biblical times. Perhaps the most famous instance of dream interpretation is
where the Pharaoh tells David his dreams about seven skinny sheep eating seven fat sheep and seven skinny ears of corn eating seven fat ears of
corn. David interpreted this to mean seven years of bumper crops followed by seven years of poor crops. With proper planning, this allowed the
Pharaoh to protect his people from potential famine during the coming lean years.
Dreams can be a means to tap into subconscious thought processes and tell us what we know that we don't even consciously realize that we know. But
we are also more psychically sensitive when we sleep. So our dreams can contain extra sensory information that is unavailable to most people when
they are awake. Most premonitions of the future actually occur in dream form, not in waking visions.
The vast majority of the time, dreams ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you read your written notes out loud, you may find that the dreams are like pictures of common expressions. This may be something you do not
notice in the images or if you read the words silently to yourself. It may only become apparent when you speak it out loud and hear the homonyms
and common phrases, such as the expression of "something bugging me" to express something bothering you or being "stabbed in the back" to express
a feeling of betrayal and so forth.
Especially at first, or when you are going through a particularly stressful time when the stakes are high for you, it can help to run your dreams past
someone else, preferably someone knowledgeable about dream interpretation. They can help you sort out the most likely meaning. Sometimes, dream
meanings can be counterintuitive or people can read in either what they would like to hear or perhaps what they most fear instead of what is really
there. An objective listener can help you avoid such

The Effect Of Parapsychology On The Existence Of Science
Not a lot of people can say they have had a paranormal experience. It is the kind of thing that happens once in a lifetime, and usually it is not anything
big. But those who do have these experiences pertain that belief in the supernatural, and it is these documented experiences that have brought about the
study of parapsychology. Is there something to these claims or is it due to mental illusions? Parapsychology is a highly debated branch of science
because of the existence of phenomena that cannot be explained, the main argument being in the existence of physics and whether there is something
beyond or not. s Parapsychology is the study of supernatural phenomena or more specifically, psychic phenomena. Most parapsychologists divide ...

Even the learned expressed interest in these, however, the wide acceptance of these occurrences may have been due to the insufficient education of the
general public. After the Enlightenment, which occurred in the 18th century, the existence of deities and magic was more widely contested and
doubted, leading to the discrediting of these phenomena as science. One of the first scientists to attempt a scientific study of psychic phenomena was
Franz Anton Mesmer in the 1700's; he experimented with and attempted to patent the mesmerism technique, more commonly known as hypnotism.
Even though his method did not achieve scientific recognition, shifting religious beliefs allowed for the widespread Spiritualism movement, which
allowed for the use of mediums and the like (Psychicscience.org). Modern parapsychology came about in the 1920's with the invention of statistical
tools and the efforts of a researcher by the name of J.B. Rhine. Rhine had three aims through his experiments: to provide data on parapsychological
phenomena rather than to attempt to prove their existence, to achieve scientific recognition and to prove that psychic ability was not limited to certain
people and was a part of human psyche all along just waiting to be discovered. Though he was not necessarily successful in his goals, Rhine did
change his field in that now psychic study is not limited to individuals with psychic talent, rather a

Spiritual Medium Research Paper
About Spiritual Mediums
You may be a candidate for readings with spiritual mediums if you've experienced unusual events such as:
A feather floats from the sky and lands at your feet. No birds are in sight. Or, you feel a whoosh of cold air, followed by the sensation that someone is
kissing your cheek. You are home alone.
Such strange occurrences could indicate a friend or loved one is reaching out to you with a message from the other side. Your best option is to seek
spiritual mediums who can help you decipher the messages.
Mediums are psychic, but their specialty is connecting with spirits on the other side. A psychic, on the other hand, is not necessarily a medium.

Not only are they blessed with psychic gifts, only mediums can connect with deceased individuals.
By now, you may be curious to know how psychic mediums work. Some communicate through power of mind to obtain information from spirits via
their highly–developed inner–senses. This is called mental mediumship.
Another method is called direct voice. These mediums speak to spirits with their normal voice, rather than their minds. It is more difficult to connect
and dialogue with those on the other side through the physical senses, because spirits tend to be detached.
Then there is trance mediumship where mediums enter an unconscious state. His physical body becomes an empty receptacle for entities to fill. Our
recommendation to first timers is – DON'T GO THERE!
Not only is the medium putting himself at risk of possession by harmful entities, it can be a frightening experience for you.
SГ©ances can be conducted by mediums for a group of clients who want to establish contact with their departed loved ones. SГ©ance was derived
from 'sedre', the Latin word for 'to sit'. An auspicious name for sure, since that is what participants do. They sit. And

Parapsychology: Science of the Unexplained Essay
Telepathy: the ability to exchange information without the use of the known senses. Psychokinesis: the ability to move or influence objects without
physical contact. Precognition: the ability to obtain information about future events outside of available perception. These abilities, along with many
others are just some of the many instances of unexplained phenomena that parapsychology attempts to understand. The exact purpose of
parapsychology is widely misinterpreted; whether due to a lack of information in the general public or preconceived notions from media portrayal, it
is inaccurate to think that parapsychology and its researchers deal with paranormal activity or fringe sciences. The history of parapsychology has also

The function of a scientist in any field is to determine the reasons how and if possible why events happen. Therefore, the purpose of parapsychology is
the attempt to understand and explain events that occur outside of conventional scientific explanation, a purpose that early parapsychologists based
their research upon.
While research of psychic phenomena is often considered to have emerged during the Cold War, in which American and Russian scientists work to
develop a means of psychic warfare, the actual birth of parapsychology as a science dates back to the late 19th century with the foundation of the
Society for Psychical Research (SPR). The SPR was founded in 1882 by researchers at Cambridge University, all of whom shared belief that
"various claims for the existence of paranormal phenomena warranted scientific scrutiny" (Irwin 1989), despite growing disregard in established
scientific fields. The early focus of the society was primarily on mediums "who claimed to be receiving information from the souls of the departed"
(Alcock, 1981), as well as accounts of extra–sensory perception, both of which was met with much skepticism; accordingly many of the founding
members of the SPR were in fact either skeptics dismissing the events entirely or philosophers seeking to prove whether or not the events in question
were paranormal.

Psych-Out Do Psychics Help Solve Crimes
Psychics are quite a controversial topic discussed by various police task forces, journalists, and detectives. Although the main thing they do is
connect with the spiritual world such as the deceased to help a person gain closure from a loss or predict someone's future so you could say, it has
been spoken of that they help in the crime solving process. Psychics have no factual evidence of majorly helping to solve any crime directly without
using a variety of techniques but it has been a controversial topic for quite some time. There is a multitude of different types of psychics, from ones
that have the ability to communicate with the deceased, to aiding police forces in solving crimes. According to Stephen Fraiser in the article

Nebuchadnezzar's Telepathic Theory
For along as humans have kept a written history there have been stories about extraordinary occurrences: telepathic dreams in which the dreamer
appears to receive the thoughts of another person or clairvoyant dreams in which the dreamer seemed to be able to observe far away events. Telepathic
and clairvoyant dreams, along with precognition and psychokinesis, have been group together and called "psi" by modern–day parapsychologists. These
instances of "psi" are described as interactions that occur between organisms and their environment (this includes other organisms) in which
information or influence is exchanged that has not been able to be explained by through conventional scientific understanding of sensory–motor
coordination. They are thought to be strange or unusual since they appear to occur outside the constraints of time, space, and energy (Krippner,

they're never 100 percent the same. "The possession of psychic abilities does not indicate a person's level of development anymore than the
possession of great physical strength does. We all have psychic potential, but our abilities stay dormant until they are activated. Psychic abilities can be

Psychics and the Lottery
There's a controversial saying that if psychics really have the ability to predict the future, then why don't they win the lottery? Well, in fact, psychics
do win the lottery all the time. When you do your research there are plenty of stories of self–proclaimed psychics who won the lottery. There are news
stories about them and there are even some lottery winners who claimed to receive their winning numbers from psychics and shamans.
Of course, you shouldn't trust certain television psychics who just want to milk the public for money. These people are straight up liars or they will

when it comes to real predictions they're clueless. However, there are psychics who are truly about that life. They can predict the future and it takes

to books like the Scary Story series, everyone has heard a good ghost story or two. Many people claim to have actually been party to a few supernatural

But actual investigation into such events began during the Victorian Age. This fascination with the supernatural was attributed to people's hope that
there was life after death, partially due to anxiety over the end of the century.
The Spiritualist movement actually began in central New York, in March 1848, in the Fox household. The house had been disturbed for years by loud
raps and knocks. When the Fox family came to occupy the house, the disturbances continued with renewed vigor. The unique thing was that the Fox
sisters claimed to be able to control the raps and communicate with the spirits causing them. They used seances to contact and speak with the spirits.
This attracted a great deal of attention and ushered in this new public interest.
The Spiritualist movement of the late Nineteenth Century brought mediums, Ouija, channeling, and apparitions to the forefront of popular
consciousness. Seances became popular parlor activities, and a lucky few made a decent living from the paranormal fancies of the Victorian Age. As
these pursuits gained notoriety for their entertainment value, however, science sought to find fact behind them. It was around this time that the study
of the paranormal began to emerge. This originally consisted of debunking the popular mystics of the day. Harry Houdini popularized this as he

What Is Parapsychology?
The Merriam–Webster dictionary defines parapsychology as follows: a field of study concerned with the investigation of evidence for paranormal
psychological phenomena (such as telepathy, clairvoyance, and psychokinesis) (Merriam–Webster 2016). It has long been debated whether or not
parapsychology should be accepted as a true science. With the lack of true scientific evidence for the existence of psi, or paranormal phenomena, the
overwhelming ability to disprove claims and evidence made about the existence of psi, and the extreme experimenter bias that permeates and skews
the interpretation of data, it is the right course of action to leave parapsychology in the realm of pseudoscience.

1. What is Paranormal Psychology? What is the scope of this branch of psychology?
Parapsychology is the study of unusual events, called paranormal psychological phenomena, such as telekinesis. ESP and many more. This branch of
psychology usually deal with experiences that lies beyond the range of the norm or beyond scientific explanation.
2. What are the ESP Categories? If you would be given the chance to have one. What ESP category do you wish to have and why? Expound your
answer.
The ESP categories are: Telepathy,Clairvoyance, Precognition, Psychokinesis and Out of Body Experiences. If I were given a chance to have one of
these i would choose Telepathy, not sure of why but before answering this question and look at the list of ESP categories, Telepathy is the first thing

Do you believe in paranormal activities (e.g. Ouija board, ghost hunting, exorcism, etc.)? Why or why not?
I pretty much don't believe, because for me everything that happens unexpectedly is just a coincidence. For example, predicting an event in the future,
it's like thinking thoroughly on the present events and saying something that can happen based on the present time and if by any chance you just said
something out of the blue I really think it's just a coincidence or some luck.
4. Share an experience which you think is considered as a paranormal activity. Explain why do you think it's paranormal?

The Scientific Study Of Interactions Between Living...
Introduction
Parapsychology is the scientific study of interactions between living organisms and their external environment that seem to transcend the known
physical laws (Rhine Research Centre, 2013). Parapsychology consists of areas including telepathy (the transmission of information between people
using non of our sensory channels or physical interaction), clairvoyance (the ability to obtain information about a person, or object through extrasensory
perception), precognition (psychic ability to see events in the future), psychokinesis (using only the mind to manipulate objects), survival studies
(studies of human consciousness).
Paranormal activity and experience is a very controversial topic that results in a wide range of beliefs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The extent to which ESP is believed varies and depends on many factors, for example profession is known to play some role as a survey of 1100
college professors found that 55% of natural scientists, 66% of social scientists, 77% of academics in the arts, humanities and education and only 34%
of psychologists believed that ESP is either an established fact or a likely possibility (Presley, 1997).
The belief that ESP belief is linked to a lower IQ has been proven inaccurate (Roe, 1999) and instead it has been shown how education level can
positively correlate with ESP belief (Rice, 2003). Surveys have proven to find that ESP belief is very common (Moore, 2005) and a meta–analysis has
shown that ESP has supporting research and that the idea of the paranormal should not be viewed with scepticism (Storm, Tressoldi & Di Risio,
2010). However, there have been multiple pieces of research to show how unreliable memory can be and that cognitive biases result in events being
misinterpreted (Henkel & Mather, 2007; Kahneman et al., 1993) so claims to have experienced ESP have to be looked at critically and with the view
that a person's account may not be reliable. A 'file–drawer' problem can also be claimed. This is the claim that the statistical significance of findings
can occur by chance and that parapsychologists ignore the falsification

conducted by Rhine included arranging the cards in random sequence, taking each card from the deck and showed face–down, and then the subject had
to identify the design on each card. Results that were much higher or much lower than chance were considered evidence of ESP. Statistically, odds of

Brief Summary Of Th The Aetherius Society
The Aetherius Society was founded by George King in 1954. King was researching radionics when he claims to have received a message during
meditation. The message was from someone who later identified himself as the Master Aetherius, and it said, "Prepare yourself! You are to become the
voice of Interplanetary Parliament." During his life, King claimed to have cooperated with the Cosmic Masters, which include historical figures such as
Buddha, Jesus, and Count Saint–Germain, as well as extraterrestrials known as Master Aetherius and "Mars Sector 6." Members of the Aetherius
Society believe King to be a prophet who transmits messages from the Masters to humankind. King was able to communicate with beings from other
spiritual energy spheres, due to his mastery of many various yoga techniques. In this state of consciousness, he was able to receive teachings from the

rate of their energy level, therefore having the ability to choose to exist permanently on a higher realm of consciousness. They are believed to be far

A Brief Note On Psychic And Paranormal Phenomena
Parapsychology is the study of psychic and paranormal phenomena, more commonly known as psi phenomena. These phenomena include
psychokinesis, precognition, and extrasensory perception. Psychokinesis is defined as the power to move objects through psychic means. Precognition
is the ability to foresee and predict the future. Extrasensory perception is the ability to sense things through the power of the mind, rather than through
the five traditional physical senses. Some people believe in the reality of psi phenomena because parapsychologists are often able to put on
convincing shows and do seemingly impossible acts. Uri Geller convinced people around the world of his parapsychological powers, as he could
perform mind–reading tricks and see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, the subjects can easily cheat by seeing the shapes themselves or reading body language instead of blindly guessing. The study would likely
conclude that the subject is a psychic because they had abnormal results, but this is a questionable argument by elimination because there is no
evidence that the abnormal results were due to psychic powers.
Parapsychologists explain the lack of evidence by claiming that psi phenomena are a type of elusive phenomena, meaning that they do not work
properly when skeptics are present. Therefore, people who perform experiments on psi phenomena are causing the tests to be faulty. This explanation
is an ad hoc rescue because it creates a fake excuse for why psi phenomena cannot produce positive results when tested. If the psi phenomena were
actually real, scientists believe that the parapsychologists would easily be able to supply prove of their existence. Furthermore, parapsychologists find
it unfair the scientific establishment has extremely high standards of evidence for psi phenomena. However, extraordinary evidence is needed to prove
extraordinary assertions. The scientific establishment views parapsychology as a pseudoscience because while currently there is no concrete evidence of
the existence of psi phenomena, it is impossible to prove that psi phenomena are nonexistent. Additionally, because there are no repeatable paranormal
phenomena, the scientific community feels that it is unlikely that such phenomena could exist.

There is a huge amount of tools out there that can be used by fortune tellers, magic practitioners, and psychics for forecasting the future. The crystal
ball is an instrument that almost everyone has heard of or seen on tv's and movies, but not many people really know the theory behind using the ball
for gazing/ fortune telling. The tradition of using a reflective surface to get psychic pictures is an ancient one. A wide range of reflective surfaces
are used for scrying such as crystals, mirrors, crystal balls, and even still bowls or pools of water. When divining the future, Nostradamus is thought
to have used a bowl. Scrying mirrors are pieces glass which are painted black on both sides, therefore, the surface provides a dim, but clear

crystal ball gazing way is usually used when someone has specifically come and requested it. The graphics are translated for that client and that

is to practice meditation on a regular basis as it is the most useful way to find and maintain the appropriate level of consciousness that's needed for
successful scrying. To do this first you need to have a quiet space where you'll not be disturbed. The lighting should be as dim as possible. Once again

happened to many women in the world, and can happen to any woman around the world. Today, I am going to be informing you about conjoined twins
and explaining to you some things you might not know about them. I chose this topic because it seemed very interesting to me, and I wanted to learn
more about it. I've done research and selected multiple sources to prepare for this speech.
First, I will be explaining what conjoined twins are. Second, I will be explaining the complications and theories about conjoined twins. Finally, I will

First, I will explain what conjoined twins are. Conjoined twins occur when the bodies of twins connect. Conjoined twins can be connected at many
different body parts. They can be joined at the head, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and more. Twins joined at the chest or abdomen is the most common,
making up 75 percent of all cases. Conjoined twins are mainly classified three ways while 75 percent are joined at the chest or abdomen, 23 percent
are joined at the hips, legs or gentiles, and two percent are joined at the head. It is estimated that conjoined twins occur once in every ... Show more

What is ExtraSensory Perception or ESP?
ESP or Extra Sensory Perception is defined as ability of a person to receive or sense information without the aid of using their five senses – see, hear,
smell, touch and taste. According to the Journal of Parapsychology, it is defined as the response to an external event not presented to any known sense.
ESP is also referred to as a sixth sense, gut instinct or hunch.

Essay Psuedopsychology vs the Scientific Method
Humans have inhabited the Earth for thousands of years and it is perceived by many that we are among the most intellectual species on this planet.
Although having lived on this planet for so long, being able to distinguish fact from fiction has escaped the minds of many. People of today's
society are easily influenced by what is told to them instead of what can be proven. Believing in something that has no scientific evidence is not only
absurd but can be classified simply as ignorance. Many of the erratic ideas that are believed by many today have originated in a time where
superstition was more popular than science. These beliefs appear to be proven by science, but in reality are not valid and frequently confused with...

All procedure varies from field to field but the steps must be repeatable to predict future results and this is where psudopsychology and fact clash.
Replicating the methods is tricky for those who are practicing these "psychologies" because they have to do it a certain way in order for the beliefs
of everyone to remain the same. Horoscopes and Astrology: A man who made the practice of horoscopes and astrology susceptible to Christians
allowed for these beliefs to spread throughout the world in the 1600's was William Lilly. During his time he was seen as a great prophet, and
became famous for "predicting" The Great Fire of London through one of his hieroglyphic drawings (McCann, 1990). The Great Fire of London
happened on September 2, 1666 and it started out as a small fire in the bakeshop of Thomas Forger destroying about 430 acres of land including
13,000 house, 89 churches and many other buildings leaving countless homeless. This fire occurred 14 years after William Lilly predicted one, and
at this time London has been prone to having fires due to its infrastructure. Most of the houses and other buildings were made of wood and highly
flammable, causing something that started as a house fire to a fire that engulfed a great majority of London. This hasn't been the only great fire that
this city has witnessed. Along with the fire of 1633 and 1676, the fire of 1666 has increased its caliber of destruction primarily because of the city's

Parapsychology : The Scientific Study Of Paranormal...
About Parapsychology Parapsychology can also be referred to as psychical research. The definition of parapsychology is the scientific study of

real anomalous effect, but the individual has interpreted their experience as a paranormal one defines what a paranormal experience is. Unfortunately
the importance of parapsychology has not been widely recognized. A popular reason on why parapsychology has been ignored is that it gives

Telepathy
Telepathy is defined as a transmission of thought independently of the recognized channels of sense. It is often also refers to mind reading. It is the
ability to communicate with another person without the use of the sense. When telepathy occurs the transmitter is often unaware that he acts as an
agent. The receivers do not consciously prepare themselves for the reception. The use of strong emotions are influenced and brought into play by a
well–developed mode of supernormal perception. In order for telepathy to exist, the receiver or percipient must learn without the use of his sense what
the sender, or agent, is thinking about. This is implied that there is no special activity on the part of the agent. The thoughts become known whether
they wish it or not and without making any effect at communication. Some of the first experiments on telepathy, a receiver or percipient had to guess

which we will deal with in a separate chapter. The primary colors have set meanings, but a combination color such as a reddish brown would take

Parapsychological Argument
The purpose of science is to work towards furthering our comprehension of how the world around us works, either by observing certain patterns or
collecting empirical evidence with the experimental method. It has been evidenced that "mainstream science" has rejected parapsychology for decades
now; textbooks ignore the concept of telekinesis, which is the power to move objects with one's mind (McGreal, 2014), and science agencies have
refused to provide funding for scientific research that studies parapsychology (Alcock, 1987). Although many proponents of parapsychology argue that
scientists must consider all "empirical" evidence with an "open–mind" and that the mere existence of evidence indicates psi's validity as a science

A major principle that the concepts of parapsychology violate is the replicability principle; the main argument made by sceptics is that, because
attempts to reliably replicate initially successful psi experiments have had a history of repeated failure, parapsychology is not only unconvincing but
also demonstrates an inconsistency that conflicts with the nature of scientific concepts and patterns about the natural world. In addition to lack of
reliable evidence, the concepts and ideas of parapsychology have not been substantiated with an entity of scientific knowledge containing a "coherent
rationale or framework," and is merely a collection of "anecdotal evidence" (Holroyd, 1997). Parapsychology also violates the extraordinary claims
require extraordinary evidence principle; psi is definitely an extraordinary concept, to the point of supernatural, yet there is a very small amount of
substantial or significantly consistent evidence that supports this theory, if any at all; in fact, existing evidence has been shown to be inconsistent and
contradictory. Finally psi is rejected by the Occam's Razor principle because of the complexity of its topics and subsequent explanations for its effect,
due to the fact that it cannot be supported by any implicit physical or biological

It all began when the Greek philosophers got into the habit of questioning nature, raising doubts about everything. Sacred forms of experience were
scorned and disparaged and eventually a certain kind of science came to dominate our thinking; the old wisdom traditions were forced to take a back
seat.
Of course, it's easy to tote up the pluses of Science, which has freed us from ignorance and superstition, cleared the way to mastering the forces of
nature, extended life and made things comfortable for the affluent in capitalist societies. On the other hand, according to the official view,
consciousness peeps out momentarily, and is destined to vanish forever after death. Science has torn down the ancient myths, and made the
implausibility of life after death an article of faith.
The effects of these phenomena have a great impact on human society. When a mother loses a child it is always a tragedy, but when there are a lot of
unanswered questions relating to his/her death, the help of a medium can lead to or bring closure to the family, enabling them to move forward. Most
people mourning the loss of a loved one are in an extremely vulnerable state, yearning for answers to questions that one can no longer answer. If we
could definitively answer these questions, the human race would be that much stronger.

Immortality And Resurrection: The Dichotomy Between...
In religion the concept of life after death is discussed in great detail. In monotheistic religions, in particular the Christian theology, death is a place
where the soul, the eternal spirit that is part of you, transcends or descends to depending on if you go to heaven or hell. The argument calls for a form
of immortality of the soul and a lack of immortality of the body–the soul lives forever, the body perishes. John Hick in his excerpt from "Immortality
and Resurrection" refutes the ideology that the spirit and body are dichotomous, one being everlasting and the other limited. In his view on the
immortality of the human psyche, he claims that the spirit and body are connected; they are not too distinct entities. With this proclamation ... Show

only resurrection people. Hick claims that in this situation the resurrected body (spiritual) would then have the same characteristics as the physical
body (earthly).
He then makes an aside to potential detractors of resurrection of the immortal of psychophysical person by giving an authority driven reason for God's
purpose in resurrecting humans. For God to allow humans to cease to exist rather and allow them to have their divine purpose unfulfilled would
contradict God's eternal love for his creatures. Hick then turns his attention to the realm of parapsychology, the psychological evaluation of paranormal
activities, in hopes it will shed light on the possibility of life after death. He divides them into two realms; one that does not specifically mention or
proffer life after death and another that is tied innately with existence after death. In his analysis of the first realm he pays particular attention the
phenomenon of telepathy. In his research, he has discovered that telepathy has some unknown quality that allows others to bridge the gap between our
minds, on a primordial level; for Hick, "Telepathy is simply a name for this unknown positive factor." Telepathy in his analysis, has shown to be

handling grief, the afterlife, and the world as we know it. Through the expansive knowledge of the varying capabilities and true life stories, the ... Show

From being an alternative route to grief counseling to their help in the criminal investigation, mediums perform socially useful tasks. (Rock 77)
When it comes to criminal investigations, mediums are called in help in finding missing persons. By bringing in an individual with little
information about the case mediums are able to show their validity by giving information that was not shared prior to their connection with the
case. (Rock 76) One person who requested the help of a medium during an investigation was Lin Anders. In 2014, her daughter Mary went
missing. After cadaver dogs were brought on the property, Mary's scent was traced to a marshy pond. This suspected pond was filled with logs
and due to the costs of draining the county was unable to afford it. When Lin was asked about her experience with the medium she spoke of the
striking evidence that was brought forward. (Anders) The medium was able to sketch a composite drawing that was identical to a man that was
being held in jail and told investigators crucial information of the prospects of the case. The medium saw that Mary was standing by her father who
passed away four years prior and was able to identify that she had died and figured the altercations of her death. She saw that Mary was bound under
water and that she was not the only woman that the offender has done this to. What the medium was able to find made a theory that was plausible

Pros And Cons Of Parapsychology

  • 1. Pros And Cons Of Parapsychology The perception of color is a phenomenon in itself. Interpretations of color shading and saturation depend on how light reflects off of it and how light is absorbed. Color interpretation is subjective to each individual based on the response frequency of neurons in an individual's eyes. Cones are the specific type of neurons that are responsible for color vision; these neurons are extremely active during high levels of light. The way that color is presented and depicted can have varying effects in how our brains perceive the area it is in. If a color looks particularly dark, the brain may interpret as the space an individual is in is dimly lit. Another way color may be presented is as light itself. The color of light may illuminate an object and change the object's color. Similarly, the color of the light may completely diminish any aspect of contour, surface, and tone of an object. Thus, making an object "disappear". A famous experiment from the 1930s called The Ganzfeld Phenomenon uses this technique of light and color to elicit altered states of consciousness. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Ganzfeld experiment is labeled under another category of psychology called parapsychology. Parapsychology focuses on the study of paranormal phenomenons (The Parapsychological Association). The original intent of this experiment was made to test telepathy and other extrasensory perceptions (Bem, 1996). The precursor before the Ganzfeld experiment was done to test telepathy as an individual was asleep in the REM stage. An individual, the receiver, would sleep and brain activity was recorded. As the receiver went through REM sleep, another individual labeled as the sender would focus on an image. The precursor experiment had hopes for the receiver to be able to describe the image the sender was focusing on. With the same concept, the Ganzfeld experiment was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Nostradamus Predictions Since the beginning of time, people have been attempting to catch a glimpse of the future. Coney Island fortune tellers and the likes have profited greatly off people's fascination with what comes next. Although a sideshow performer is unlikely to predict any world events, other better qualified clairvoyants already have. For example, Nostradamus is famed for his future predictions, such as nearly writing Hitler's name in a notebook years before he came to power. One woman is known as the Nostradamus of the Balkans for her many prophecies about the future. Prophetess Vanga, better known as Baba Vanga, predicted a great deal about our future, and some of these predictions may be coming true. Prophetess Vanga was born in Strumica, Bulgaria, modern day Macedonia, on January first, 1911 (Daily Musings 1). When she was twelve–years–old, Vanga was lost in a sandy field for days after a tornado ripped through her home. After several days, she was found alive, but her eyes were badly damaged from the earth blown into them. The ordeal blinded Vanga and she began going to attending a school for the blind in 1925 (Mishkov 2). In exchange ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She predicted that by 4302 civilization will have a cure for all disease, probably by replacing diseased parts with perfect clones (Prophecies 2). By beating all disease, people would achieve immortality. Although obtaining a cure for every disease and malfunction seems impossible, if doctors were able to replace any and every piece of diseased or damaged tissue with an exact copy of healthy tissue, there is no reason to believe people could not live forever. For example, a woman with breast cancer could have per breasts replaced with perfect clones made in an organ printer. Additionally, an elderly man suffering from Alzheimer's disease could have the deteriorated brain matter replenished. The possibilities would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Secrets Of The Psychics Analysis The documentary, "Secrets of the Psychics", was an interesting experiment that seemed to expose the powers people claim they have. Randi has many claims that explains that it takes a lot of talent to make someone believe in a person's abilities. I was interested in how he says it takes the audience to believe what they see to create psychic powers. When James was palm reading he told the participant the opposite of what he was reading. She somehow believed him and tricked her into thinking what he was saying was true. I think of it as a placebo effect. A person will try to find truth in the ability somehow, even if it is not exactly correct. I loved how Randi was able to duplicate experiments that are used by psychics daily. This made me see ... • 4. Perception And Perception Of An Event And It Later Comes... Have you ever had a vision about an event and it later comes true? Have you ever been able to read another individual's thoughts? If so, you may possess extrasensory perception. Extrasensory perception is the "ability to obtain information about the world around you without using the normal five senses of sight, touch, taste, hearing and smell" (Extrasensory Perception [APA], n.d.). There are many theories on extrasensory perception, including that "all humans have some degree of extrasensory perception and that we involuntarily experience extrasensory perception on several occasions" (Extrasensory Perception [APA], n.d.). In other words, many individuals believe that all humans have the potential for extrasensory perception, but some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Joseph Rhine was a professor at Duke University, at the time, where he conducted numerous experiments that concluded the existence of the sixth sense, extrasensory perception. In these experiments, Rhine designed a set of twenty–five cards, later known as Zener cards, that consisted of four different designs: a circle, wave, square, and cross. Two participants were required for this experiment, which included a transmitter and receiver. In an experiment testing telepathy, the transmitter would look at a string of cards while the receiver would try to guess the symbols of the cards. Since each deck of cards contained five cards of each design, each participant has a one in five chance of guessing the pattern on a card. Rhine came to the conclusion that with "random guessing you yield five hits per deck of twenty–five" (Extrasensory Perception [APA], n.d.). Moreover, any individual who was above the level of five hits, possessed some ability of extrasensory perception. When Rhine was testing clairvoyance, the deck of cards was concealed, while the receiver tried to guess the design on the cards. In 1970, Charles Honorton used the Ganzfeld Technique. Honorton's experiment required two participants, a receiver and a transmitter. The receiver is placed in a room filled with red light with white noise playing in the background, referred to as the Ganzfeld state. • 5. Relationship Between Repetition And The Belief Of... ABSTRACT This experiments looks at the relationship between repetition and the belief in Extrasensory Perception (ESP). People who believe in ESP are referred to as 'sheep' and those who do not are referred to as 'goats'. This is the sheep–goat effect. The sheep are more likely to avoid giving repetitions than the goats that have a low belief in ESP. A total of one hundred and eighty five participants took part in this study by imagining that they had a dice that they had to roll. They had to provide the experimenter with an imaginary number between one and six which would be repeated and recorded a total of 67 times. Once this had been completed a questionnaire was given in which they had to rate their belief in ESP on a scale of one (strong belief) and six (strong disbelief). In order to test the hypothesis, data was collected and then analysed in order to find out the number of repetitions that occurred. This experiment consisted of three groups of people; the sheep, the goats, and those that were indifferent. The results obtained proved our hypothesis as the goats made a larger amount of repetitions than the sheep did. INTRODUCTION Extrasensory Perception is the belief in being able to perceive things from ways other than using our original 5 senses. Examples of ESP are clairvoyance and telepathy. This experiment provides us with the relevant evidence in order for us to prove that there is a relationship between repetition and Extrasensory Perception. This study was ... • 6. Pros And Cons Of Neutralizing Deviance Not only has the use of psychics skyrocketed, but their acts of paranormal deviance has allowed the craft to grow into five subtypes: Charismatic, Intraorganizational, Cross–Organizational, Interoganizational and Charlatans. While doing so, Psychics have used two distinct methods as a facade to obtain the appearance of a legitimate career. The first method, known as neutralizing deviance is defined as "people and groups especially those dealing with a devalued social identity, seek to control the impressions they convey. They do this to neutralize negative images and create a favorable view in order to gain social acceptance" (Goffman as cited in Hodges & Ulsperger, 2005, p. 35). • 7. Parapsychology: Practically Pseudoscience In Every Way Parapsychology: Practically Pseudoscience in Every Way. What is Parapsychology? According to Jean Saindon, Parapsychology is the scientific study if psychic phenomena. This can include areas such as ghosts/haunted houses, spiritualism, hypnosis, mediums and sГ©ances and/or intuition (Saindon,13). Although Parapsychology may seem like a science to some, there are many cases that prove that this is in fact a pseudoscience instead of an actual science itself. Firstly, in terms of what can be categorized as science and what cannot be, parapsychology definitely falls under the category of pseudoscience based on the Scientific Criteria of Evaluation. Secondly, the field of Parapsychology has been known to have many cases of fraud in their studies. Finally, in terms of evidence, it follows pseudoscience because the evidence is not specific or valid to be claimed as science, therefore Parapsychology can be regarded as a pseudoscience and that fact can be backed up accordingly. The definition of Science "is to look at the natural world in naturalistic terms" (Saindon) and the Criteria for Scientific Evaluation doesn't exactly correspond with the field of parapsychology. Starting off, the data behind parapsychology is not listed as well as it should be. For example, the Criterion for Scientific Evaluation asks "how accurate and precise are the claims?" (Saindon) If we were to apply this to cases such as the Fox sisters, then we would see that it is not very precise or accurate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. My Development As A Psychologist Chapter 42 Dr Gordon Mangan Dr Mangan was far more influential in my development as a psychologist than I realised when I was a student. I must confess that I didn't warm to him as a teacher. When I peruse his publications it seems amazing that I cant find a full biography or bibliography of Mangan anywhere on the net. I am happy to fill that gap now. It is high time. Dr Mangan has a rare scientific talent that enables him to originate and follow uncommon ideas to their conclusion and then substantiate his remarkable ideas with clear theorising and hard experimental data. An overview of his publications might lead to the impression that he deliberately chose areas that were neglected and controversial. He devoted half a decade of his early career to parapsychology, publishing innovative research and clearheaded reviews. He devoted the later part of his career to research in smoking – funded by the tobacco industry. He had a lasting interest in Russian psychology particularly Pavlov and the neo–Pavlovians. A considerable amount of his work is devoted to drawing parallels between Eastern and Western conceptualisations of personality, learning and arousal which culminated in an influential book "The Biology of Human Conduct: East–West Models of Temperament and Personality". As well as these three areas he published on a broad range of topics including intelligence, aging, learning, conflict, behaviour therapy, personality, attention, music and arousal. The following ... Scientists, researchers, and analysts have and are still trying to find logical solutions for unnatural things occurring. Parapsychology is a subject that sparks the interests of people all over the world and accurate analysis of it is yet to be found. Parapsychological Association (2011) says, "Parapsychology is the scientific and scholarly study of three kinds of unusual events (ESP, mind–matter interaction, and survival), which are associated with human experience...The existence of these phenomena suggests the strict subjective/objective dichotomy proposed by the old paradigm may not be quite as clear–cut as once ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reincarnation is accepted in different parts of the country. The Question of Reincarnation says, "In the twentieth century, it is undeniably accepted among most religions of the East...In the West, mainstream religions and churches shy away from any discussion or belief in the cycle of rebirth" (2001). A recent studied revealed most Americans believe in reincarnation. When it comes to the unnatural side of things, people tend not to believe in it unless there is scientific proof. To deny the existence of reincarnation because there is no concrete proof is unfair because many other spiritual and religious teachings have yet to be proven but there is so much belief in such things (The Question of Reincarnation: Part One, 2001). The Question of Reincarnation says, "The fact of reincarnation makes more sense and is more in line with natural law than the myth of it", the reasons were because, "Reincarnation follows the universal Law of Cycles; Reincarnation is a wonderful demonstration of God's grace and our ability to correct that which needs to be corrected; It seems inconceivable that we can master the lower aspects of the personality in one earthly lifetime; and Reincarnation helps explain the appearance of evil in a world guided by a loving God" (2001). 3 Accounts I Watched Myself Being Buried Years ago when Lauren was 13 or 14, she was watching a ghost –hunter show when a random wave of ... • 10. Dream Interpretation Research Paper Dream interpretation is an old tradition that dates back at least as far as Biblical times. Perhaps the most famous instance of dream interpretation is where the Pharaoh tells David his dreams about seven skinny sheep eating seven fat sheep and seven skinny ears of corn eating seven fat ears of corn. David interpreted this to mean seven years of bumper crops followed by seven years of poor crops. With proper planning, this allowed the Pharaoh to protect his people from potential famine during the coming lean years. Dreams can be a means to tap into subconscious thought processes and tell us what we know that we don't even consciously realize that we know. But we are also more psychically sensitive when we sleep. So our dreams can contain extra sensory information that is unavailable to most people when they are awake. Most premonitions of the future actually occur in dream form, not in waking visions. The vast majority of the time, dreams ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 11. The Effect Of Parapsychology On The Existence Of Science Not a lot of people can say they have had a paranormal experience. It is the kind of thing that happens once in a lifetime, and usually it is not anything big. But those who do have these experiences pertain that belief in the supernatural, and it is these documented experiences that have brought about the study of parapsychology. Is there something to these claims or is it due to mental illusions? Parapsychology is a highly debated branch of science because of the existence of phenomena that cannot be explained, the main argument being in the existence of physics and whether there is something beyond or not. s Parapsychology is the study of supernatural phenomena or more specifically, psychic phenomena. Most parapsychologists divide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even the learned expressed interest in these, however, the wide acceptance of these occurrences may have been due to the insufficient education of the general public. After the Enlightenment, which occurred in the 18th century, the existence of deities and magic was more widely contested and doubted, leading to the discrediting of these phenomena as science. One of the first scientists to attempt a scientific study of psychic phenomena was Franz Anton Mesmer in the 1700's; he experimented with and attempted to patent the mesmerism technique, more commonly known as hypnotism. Even though his method did not achieve scientific recognition, shifting religious beliefs allowed for the widespread Spiritualism movement, which allowed for the use of mediums and the like (Psychicscience.org). Modern parapsychology came about in the 1920's with the invention of statistical tools and the efforts of a researcher by the name of J.B. Rhine. Rhine had three aims through his experiments: to provide data on parapsychological phenomena rather than to attempt to prove their existence, to achieve scientific recognition and to prove that psychic ability was not limited to certain people and was a part of human psyche all along just waiting to be discovered. Though he was not necessarily successful in his goals, Rhine did change his field in that now psychic study is not limited to individuals with psychic talent, rather a ... No birds are in sight. Or, you feel a whoosh of cold air, followed by the sensation that someone is kissing your cheek. You are home alone. Such strange occurrences could indicate a friend or loved one is reaching out to you with a message from the other side. Your best option is to seek spiritual mediums who can help you decipher the messages. Mediums are psychic, but their specialty is connecting with spirits on the other side. Some communicate through power of mind to obtain information from spirits via their highly–developed inner–senses. This is called mental mediumship. Another method is called direct voice. These mediums speak to spirits with their normal voice, rather than their minds. It is more difficult to connect and dialogue with those on the other side through the physical senses, because spirits tend to be detached. Then there is trance mediumship where mediums enter an unconscious state. His physical body becomes an empty receptacle for entities to fill. Our recommendation to first timers is – DON'T GO THERE! Not only is the medium putting himself at risk of possession by harmful entities, it can be a frightening experience for you. Psychokinesis: the ability to move or influence objects without physical contact. Precognition: the ability to obtain information about future events outside of available perception. These abilities, along with many others are just some of the many instances of unexplained phenomena that parapsychology attempts to understand. The exact purpose of parapsychology is widely misinterpreted; whether due to a lack of information in the general public or preconceived notions from media portrayal, it is inaccurate to think that parapsychology and its researchers deal with paranormal activity or fringe sciences. The function of a scientist in any field is to determine the reasons how and if possible why events happen. Therefore, the purpose of parapsychology is the attempt to understand and explain events that occur outside of conventional scientific explanation, a purpose that early parapsychologists based their research upon. While research of psychic phenomena is often considered to have emerged during the Cold War, in which American and Russian scientists work to develop a means of psychic warfare, the actual birth of parapsychology as a science dates back to the late 19th century with the foundation of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR). The SPR was founded in 1882 by researchers at Cambridge University, all of whom shared belief that "various claims for the existence of paranormal phenomena warranted scientific scrutiny" (Irwin 1989), despite growing disregard in established scientific fields. The early focus of the society was primarily on mediums "who claimed to be receiving information from the souls of the departed" (Alcock, 1981), as well as accounts of extra–sensory perception, both of which was met with much skepticism; accordingly many of the founding members of the SPR were in fact either skeptics dismissing the events entirely or philosophers seeking to prove whether or not the events in question were paranormal. Psychics have no factual evidence of majorly helping to solve any crime directly without using a variety of techniques but it has been a controversial topic for quite some time. Nebuchadnezzar's Telepathic Theory For along as humans have kept a written history there have been stories about extraordinary occurrences: telepathic dreams in which the dreamer appears to receive the thoughts of another person or clairvoyant dreams in which the dreamer seemed to be able to observe far away events. Telepathic and clairvoyant dreams, along with precognition and psychokinesis, have been group together and called "psi" by modern–day parapsychologists. These instances of "psi" are described as interactions that occur between organisms and their environment (this includes other organisms) in which information or influence is exchanged that has not been able to be explained by through conventional scientific understanding of sensory–motor coordination. But actual investigation into such events began during the Victorian Age. This fascination with the supernatural was attributed to people's hope that there was life after death, partially due to anxiety over the end of the century. The Spiritualist movement actually began in central New York, in March 1848, in the Fox household. The house had been disturbed for years by loud raps and knocks. When the Fox family came to occupy the house, the disturbances continued with renewed vigor. The unique thing was that the Fox sisters claimed to be able to control the raps and communicate with the spirits causing them. They used seances to contact and speak with the spirits. This attracted a great deal of attention and ushered in this new public interest. The Spiritualist movement of the late Nineteenth Century brought mediums, Ouija, channeling, and apparitions to the forefront of popular consciousness. Seances became popular parlor activities, and a lucky few made a decent living from the paranormal fancies of the Victorian Age. As these pursuits gained notoriety for their entertainment value, however, science sought to find fact behind them. It was around this time that the study of the paranormal began to emerge. With the lack of true scientific evidence for the existence of psi, or paranormal phenomena, the overwhelming ability to disprove claims and evidence made about the existence of psi, and the extreme experimenter bias that permeates and skews the interpretation of data, it is the right course of action to leave parapsychology in the realm of pseudoscience. The belief that ESP belief is linked to a lower IQ has been proven inaccurate (Roe, 1999) and instead it has been shown how education level can positively correlate with ESP belief (Rice, 2003). Surveys have proven to find that ESP belief is very common (Moore, 2005) and a meta–analysis has shown that ESP has supporting research and that the idea of the paranormal should not be viewed with scepticism (Storm, Tressoldi & Di Risio, 2010). However, there have been multiple pieces of research to show how unreliable memory can be and that cognitive biases result in events being misinterpreted (Henkel & Mather, 2007; Kahneman et al., 1993) so claims to have experienced ESP have to be looked at critically and with the view that a person's account may not be reliable. The study would likely conclude that the subject is a psychic because they had abnormal results, but this is a questionable argument by elimination because there is no evidence that the abnormal results were due to psychic powers. Parapsychologists explain the lack of evidence by claiming that psi phenomena are a type of elusive phenomena, meaning that they do not work properly when skeptics are present. Therefore, people who perform experiments on psi phenomena are causing the tests to be faulty. This explanation is an ad hoc rescue because it creates a fake excuse for why psi phenomena cannot produce positive results when tested. If the psi phenomena were actually real, scientists believe that the parapsychologists would easily be able to supply prove of their existence. Furthermore, parapsychologists find it unfair the scientific establishment has extremely high standards of evidence for psi phenomena. However, extraordinary evidence is needed to prove extraordinary assertions. The scientific establishment views parapsychology as a pseudoscience because while currently there is no concrete evidence of the existence of psi phenomena, it is impossible to prove that psi phenomena are nonexistent. There are specific meanings for each of the colors of the aura which we will deal with in a separate chapter. The primary colors have set meanings, but a combination color such as a reddish brown would take on qualities of both colors. And how clear and bright the color is, is very important to the interpretation, because a bright color means something very different than a dull color. As you learn about the colors you will also learn about where on the body the color is. Each chakra in the body is associated with a certain color so don't be surprised to find that color near that chakra. Colors around one area can mean one thing and around a different area mean something completely different. When we look at a person's aura we are looking at their true self, everything that is left after you take away all the habits, mannerisms, the people they pretend to be, and their frivolous, trivial behavior. Their aura shows who they truly are not the facade they show everyone in public. In general, the more balanced the aura, the healthier and more stabilized the person is. When taking in the whole aura you also may notice holes in some places. This can mean an injury or sickness, in some cases that the person isn't even aware of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Parapsychological Argument The purpose of science is to work towards furthering our comprehension of how the world around us works, either by observing certain patterns or collecting empirical evidence with the experimental method. It has been evidenced that "mainstream science" has rejected parapsychology for decades now; textbooks ignore the concept of telekinesis, which is the power to move objects with one's mind (McGreal, 2014), and science agencies have refused to provide funding for scientific research that studies parapsychology (Alcock, 1987). Although many proponents of parapsychology argue that scientists must consider all "empirical" evidence with an "open–mind" and that the mere existence of evidence indicates psi's validity as a science (McGreal, 2014), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A major principle that the concepts of parapsychology violate is the replicability principle; the main argument made by sceptics is that, because attempts to reliably replicate initially successful psi experiments have had a history of repeated failure, parapsychology is not only unconvincing but also demonstrates an inconsistency that conflicts with the nature of scientific concepts and patterns about the natural world. In addition to lack of reliable evidence, the concepts and ideas of parapsychology have not been substantiated with an entity of scientific knowledge containing a "coherent rationale or framework," and is merely a collection of "anecdotal evidence" (Holroyd, 1997). Parapsychology also violates the extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence principle; psi is definitely an extraordinary concept, to the point of supernatural, yet there is a very small amount of substantial or significantly consistent evidence that supports this theory, if any at all; in fact, existing evidence has been shown to be inconsistent and contradictory. Finally psi is rejected by the Occam's Razor principle because of the complexity of its topics and subsequent explanations for its effect, due to the fact that it cannot be supported by any implicit physical or biological ... • 40. The Psychic Medium The Psychic Medium There are many types of psychic phenomena that exist. In this paper, I will discuss that of the psychic medium. The term psychic medium refers to a person thought to have the ability to communicate with the spirits of the dead or with agents of another world or dimension through extra sensory perception or paranormal powers. While a medium will always be psychic, a psychic is not always a medium. The main objective of a mediums work is to prove survival of the human personality or spirit after death and to help the bereaved come to terms with their loss. The ability of a psychic medium can have a life saving effect. However, due to the many fraudulent practitioners trying to scam people out of their money by offering ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It all began when the Greek philosophers got into the habit of questioning nature, raising doubts about everything. Sacred forms of experience were scorned and disparaged and eventually a certain kind of science came to dominate our thinking; the old wisdom traditions were forced to take a back seat. Of course, it's easy to tote up the pluses of Science, which has freed us from ignorance and superstition, cleared the way to mastering the forces of nature, extended life and made things comfortable for the affluent in capitalist societies. On the other hand, according to the official view, consciousness peeps out momentarily, and is destined to vanish forever after death. Science has torn down the ancient myths, and made the implausibility of life after death an article of faith. The effects of these phenomena have a great impact on human society. When a mother loses a child it is always a tragedy, but when there are a lot of unanswered questions relating to his/her death, the help of a medium can lead to or bring closure to the family, enabling them to move forward. Most people mourning the loss of a loved one are in an extremely vulnerable state, yearning for answers to questions that one can no longer answer. If we could definitively answer these questions, the human race would be that much stronger. Now take it one step ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Immortality And Resurrection: The Dichotomy Between... In religion the concept of life after death is discussed in great detail. In monotheistic religions, in particular the Christian theology, death is a place where the soul, the eternal spirit that is part of you, transcends or descends to depending on if you go to heaven or hell. The argument calls for a form of immortality of the soul and a lack of immortality of the body–the soul lives forever, the body perishes. John Hick in his excerpt from "Immortality and Resurrection" refutes the ideology that the spirit and body are dichotomous, one being everlasting and the other limited. In his view on the immortality of the human psyche, he claims that the spirit and body are connected; they are not too distinct entities. With this proclamation ... Hick claims that in this situation the resurrected body (spiritual) would then have the same characteristics as the physical body (earthly). He then makes an aside to potential detractors of resurrection of the immortal of psychophysical person by giving an authority driven reason for God's purpose in resurrecting humans. For God to allow humans to cease to exist rather and allow them to have their divine purpose unfulfilled would contradict God's eternal love for his creatures. Hick then turns his attention to the realm of parapsychology, the psychological evaluation of paranormal activities, in hopes it will shed light on the possibility of life after death. He divides them into two realms; one that does not specifically mention or proffer life after death and another that is tied innately with existence after death. In his analysis of the first realm he pays particular attention the phenomenon of telepathy. In his research, he has discovered that telepathy has some unknown quality that allows others to bridge the gap between our minds, on a primordial level; for Hick, "Telepathy is simply a name for this unknown positive factor." • 42. True Psychic Mediums : An Individual Who Regularly... By definition, a "psychic medium" is an individual who regularly experiences communication with the spirit world. This ability makes it possible for skilled mediums to give accurate and specific information about the person who has passed on. On a socially relevant front, there is a growing interest in mediumship. This want and need to learn about the sixth sense has brought healthy skepticism and a better understanding of the life and potential of an intuitive personality. True psychic mediums are more than the over dramatic cinema depictions they are given. They have changed the viewpoint on handling grief, the afterlife, and the world as we know it. From being an alternative route to grief counseling to their help in the criminal investigation, mediums perform socially useful tasks. (Rock 77) When it comes to criminal investigations, mediums are called in help in finding missing persons. By bringing in an individual with little information about the case mediums are able to show their validity by giving information that was not shared prior to their connection with the case. (Rock 76) One person who requested the help of a medium during an investigation was Lin Anders. In 2014, her daughter Mary went missing. After cadaver dogs were brought on the property, Mary's scent was traced to a marshy pond. This suspected pond was filled with logs and due to the costs of draining the county was unable to afford it. When Lin was asked about her experience with the medium she spoke of the striking evidence that was brought forward. (Anders) The medium was able to sketch a composite drawing that was identical to a man that was being held in jail and told investigators crucial information of the prospects of the case. The medium saw that Mary was standing by her father who passed away four years prior and was able to identify that she had died and figured the altercations of her death. She saw that Mary was bound under water and that she was not the only woman that the offender has done this to. What the medium was able to find made a theory that was plausible when looking at ...
