History Of The Pittsburgh Homestead Grays
Some people may think that the Pittsburgh Pirates were the only team to play in Pittsburgh, but that
is not true. The Pittsburgh Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords were the two Negro
League teams. The Homestead Grays started in 1912. The Grays played independently until they
became a part of the American Negro League in 1929. They only spent one season in the American
Negro League and were independent again until 1932. In 1932, the Grays joined the East–West
League. The East–West League only lasted that season. After a few more years of being
independent, the Grays then joined the National Negro League. This league lasted the rest of the
thirteen years of the Grays. The Grays were one of the most successful Negro League teams ever.
The team acquired nine league titles, and three Negro League World Series titles. The team's final
season was in 1950 ("Baseball History"). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although they were new to the game, they still won the 1935 Negro National League championship.
The team was lead by the legendary Satchel Paige. They were founded in 1930 and sponsored by the
Crawford Bath House and Recreation Center. The Crawfords spent most of their years as an
independent team. Then, in 1933, they joined the National Negro Leagues. The team won the Negro
League title in both 1935 and 1936. After losing several key players, such as, Satchel Paige, Josh
Gibson, and Cool Papa Bell, the team was unable to recover and as a result, was forced to close in
1938 ("Baseball History").
Leroy "Satchel" Paige was known as the best and fastest pitcher to ever be a part of the Negro
Leagues. Satchel Paige compiled a total of sixty–four consecutive scoreless innings, twenty–one
straight wins, and a 31–4 win to lose record in 1933. He was given plenty attention bringing in
sellout crowds. His only goal was to pitch in the Major Leagues

Southwest Sports Group Contract for Alex Rodriguez:
The 10 year contract which Tom Hicks and his team proposed for Alex Rodriguez was one of the
biggest ever in the history of Baseball. It was a major Investment decision for the group. The Group
had taken over the Dallas Stars few years earlier and spent on buying quality players. This worked
wonders for the team and Dallas Stars went on to lead the group. Tom Hicks had a policy of
spending 50–55% of team revenue on team payrolls. If that is maintained he always gains an
operating profit of 10–15%.

What Are Worse Than Other Sports Injuries
Some sports injuries, are worse than others Are athletes protected enough in sports? Even though in
some sports, athletes wear pads for protection. Some sports require more pads than others do. Not
all athletes feel safe in their own sport. Some athletes are more prone to injury in other sports. The
injuries players face in football are awful. It's a high risk sport. Players of the sport retire so early
from the NFL because of the massive hits. It really takes a toll to their body. Some players retire by
thirty years old for reasons like injuries. ACL/MCL tears are the most common injury that is actually
serious. Some players in this sport are too big to tackle in their upper body, so they get tackled in
their lower body, like their knees. This is one cause of ACL/MCL ... Show more content on

I play for Memorial so I can say, it is a risky sport. I love it, and there are lots injuries that can
happen though. Hits, blocking shots, constantly being hit by sticks; all of these can cause some form
of injury. Players face lots of bruises, but some of these can cause a more serious, long term injury
such as knee, elbow and hand injuries. Basketball can be high risk. I've seen some very graphic
injuries from watching a basketball game. All sports have some sort of injury possibility, but this oe
would definitely be on the bottom of the rest. Main injuries are ankle sprains, jammed fingers, or
some of the possible more severe injuries include knee injuries. My experience with injuries aren't a
whole lot, because I would like to say I don't put myself into situation to get hurt a whole lot. I have
faced a lot of bruises in lacrosse and they hurt, but they eventually go away. I have been in a lot of
pain after a few slashes to my hand, I came out right away because of the pain. I hung in there and
finished and it eventually went away. I've never broken a bone, and I have never gotten hurt to the
point where I won't play and go out and give everything I

Derek Jeter
Derek Sanderson Jeter was born on June 26, 1974 in Pequannock, NJ. After spending the early years
of his life growing up less than 30 miles away from Yankee Stadium, his family moved to
Kalamazoo, Michigan where Derek began playing tee–ball at the age of five. Thanks to the
influence of his grandmother, he grew up a Yankees fan and idolized outfielder Dave Winfield.
Derek would normally return to New Jersey during the summer to visit his grandparents and attend
Yankees games. His early days on the diamond in Kalamazoo were spent honing his skills in the
Eastwood, Oakwood and Westwood Little Leagues. When he started playing high school ball in
1989, his talents helped him earn a spot on the Kalamazoo Central varsity team as a freshman. ...

as drugs and alcohol. The following season, Derek helped lead the Yankees back to the postseason,
where they would lose to Cleveland in the ALDS. New York rebounded by winning a franchise
record 114 games in 1998, and would capture its second World Series title in three years. Derek's
.324 average, 203 hits, 19 homers and 30 steals helped him earn the first of six All–Star appearances
(1998–2002, 2004), and a year later he would bat a career–high .349, as New York cruised to its
third championship in four seasons. In 2000, Derek was named the MVP of both the All–Star Game
and the World Series, as the Yankees downed the Mets to capture the Subway Series and a fourth
title in Jeter's five seasons in the Majors. On June 3, 2003 Derek was named Captain of New York

won the World Series in 2016 to end a 108 year championship drought. What do they have in
common? The teams both had a success in the early 20th century, but both blundered for extensive
amounts of time before winning another world championship. Both had to overcome a huge deficit
to complete their championship winning seasons. Both teams were coming off a successful season

In 1978, the Red Sox held a 14–game lead in the American League East over the Yankees on July
18. However, the Yankees subsequently caught fire, eventually winning the division by three games.
In the 1986 World Series, Boston took a 5–3 lead in the top of the 10th inning. Red Sox reliever
Calvin Schiraldi retired the first two batters, putting the team within one out of winning the World
Series. However, the New York Mets scored three runs and winning it when Boston first baseman
Bill Buckner allowed a ground ball to roll through his legs. In 2003, the Red Sox were playing the
Yankees in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series. Boston held a 5–2 lead in the
eighth inning, and Boston opted to stay with starting pitcher Pedro Martínez rather than go to the
bullpen. New York rallied against the tired Martínez, scoring three runs on a single and three
doubles to tie the game. Then in bottom of the 11th inning, Aaron Boone launched a solo home run
to win the game and the pennant for the Yankees. Similar to Boston, Chicago had The Curse of the
Billy Goat. The curse was supposedly placed on the Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball franchise

The Success Of The Buffalo Bills Essay
Everyone has a specific skill set that they are good at. Some people are good with numbers, others
have a gift for writing. The same is true in sports. The Buffalo Bills are very good at losing and
disappointing their fans, while the Patriots are fantastic at bending the rules and winning Super
Bowls. In baseball, each team is built around a specific group of players in order to create the best
possible chance to win the World Series. Some of the greatest players have created seemingly
unbreakable statistics. Joe DiMaggio had a hit in fifty–six consecutive games. Barry Bonds hit seven
hundred and sixty–two home runs over his twenty–two–year career. Statistics like these only come
about once in a generation. Teams are comprised of various talent. Some are like Miguel Cabrera.
Cabrera always has a batting average over .300 with at least 25 home runs. These types of players
are considered great hitters. Other's, like Stephan Drew, get a hit less than 20% of the time they have
an at bat. Players similar to Drew's skill set have a job because they are very good at defense and
their value on defense out ways their value on offense to their specific team. Baseball is sport rich
with statistics. Almost anything one can come up with, has a statistic. In the last ten years alone, top
executives, such as Billy Bean, have constructed teams based on advanced statistics and have been
fairly successful, like the 2002 Oakland Athletics. Other teams, like the Houston Astros,

Descriptive Essay On Baseball
As we were sitting there, you could feel the excitement running through the stadium. It was the
same stadium that we've been to many times before. The smell of the hotdogs, the luscious ivy that
was in the outfield, and the organ being played. All of the things were the same, but this time
everything was different. Everyone knew what was happening. This could be the first time in over
100 years that the Cubs could make the World Series. As the game was getting close to over,
finishing the 8th going into the 9th inning, we were hoping that this year would be the year to finally
have the shot. We hoped that our lousy luck in the playoffs doesn't affect us again. This time we
could have it, we were almost there. All of these years where our dream has fell apart finally coming
together to put us in the right place. All of us prayed there wouldn't have to be a Game 7 and that it
could happen tonight. It could be the day that we finally clinch the National League.
The final inning was finally starting off. The nerves were streaming all throughout the ballpark,
from the stands, to the bleachers, to the field. Aroldis Chapman was taking the mound ready to be
the beast he normally was. His throws were like lightning, fast and shocking. The first batter of the
inning came up. The at bat was quick and the hitter was struck out swinging like a wrecking ball.
The next hitter comes up. After seeing a lot of speedy pitches and a long at bat, he finally drew a
walk. All of the Cubs fans

Essay on The 1919 Black Sox Scandal
The 1919 Black Sox Scandal
The 1919 World Series resulted in the most famous scandal in baseball history. Eight players from
the Chicago White Sox (later nicknamed the Black Sox) were accused of throwing the series against
the Cincinnati Reds. Details of the scandal and the extent to which each man was involved have
always been unclear. It was, however, front–page news across the country and, despite being
acquitted of criminal charges, the players were banned from professional baseball for life. The eight
men included the great "shoeless Joe Jackson," pitchers Eddie Cicotte and Claude "Lefty" Williams;
infielders Buck Weaver, Arnold "Chick" Gandil, Fred McMullin, and Charles "Swede" Risberg; and
outfielder Oscar "Happy" Felsch. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Comiskey was able to get away with paying low salaries because of the "reserve clause" in players'
contracts. This clause prevented players from changing teams without the permission of the owners.
Without a union, the players had no bargaining power.
Gamblers were often visibly present at ballparks and the fixing of games had been suspected since
the mid–1850s. Rumors circulated that players supplemented their incomes by throwing single
games. Several ballplayers had the reputation of working closely with gamblers. A small–time
gambler, Joseph Sullivan, allegedly made money on inside tips from Chicago's Chick Gandil.
Sullivan's bets were safer when he knew a pitcher or hitter was sick, hurt, or having an off week.
Although gambling was intertwined with baseball long before the eight White Sox were accused of
fixing the Series, the number of gamblers at ballparks had dramatically increased by 1919.
Ironically, Comiskey posted signs throughout the park declaring, "No Betting Allowed In This
Park."
While the facts surrounding the throwing of the Series are confusing, people familiar with the case
agree Gandil was the ringleader. A few weeks before the 1919 World Series, Gandil approached
Sullivan about fixing the Series. He told Sullivan that for

New York Yankees Essay
Ever since they became an official organization in 1903, the New York Yankees have established
themselves as one of the world's top sport organizations. As a Major League Baseball team, they
have historically achieved the ultimate goal of winning the World Series and have gained fans and

Brian Cashman has a large decisional role because he has to make the correct decisions for the fans
to be content and the team to win. Back when the Yankees won several consecutive championships
in the '90s, Joe Torre (field manager) was a leader of the team with excellent human skills. He was
able to interact with his players in a way that allowed them to perform at or above their potential,
and he also had an incredible amount of knowledge for the types of players he needed to succeed.
The owner and general manager had good technical and conceptual skills because it was important
that they plan, evaluate, and organize the formation of a successful organization. They had to
evaluate the existing organization, plan what players to trade for, and organize the business matters.
I know that the organization's main goal is to win national championships, but they also want to be
effective and efficient in doing so. When the owner George Steinbrenner goes out and gets all–star
caliber players to win the American League East division and the World Series, he has to pay a lot of
money in order to attract them to his team. In terms of being a successful leader, it is obvious that
George Steinbrenner "exerts influence in a way that achieves the organization's goals by enhancing
the productivity and satisfaction of the work force" (Chelladurai, 2005) because he is trying to

Roberto Clemente Research Paper
The sound of the swish of a basketball, the crack of bat, and the kick of goal, are of many sports

athletes have made achievements beyond the imagination of an American athlete. Athletes like
Roberto Clemente, Hall of Fame baseball player from Puerto Rico, Miguel Cotto, champion boxer,
and Juan Pablo Montoya, NASCAR driver are athletes that have gone above and beyond their
dreams and turned it into a reality. The Hispanic athletes of yesterday, and the ones of today have

Should Esports Be Considered A Sport?
Should eSports Be Considered a Sport? A sport is defined as an athletic activity requiring skill or
physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. Competitive. Competition is a rivalry between
two or more persons or groups for an object desired in common, usually resulting in a victor and a
loser. Something to argue would be if a competition could legitimately be considered a sport. The
word 'compete' is in the definition of sport after all. So, should eSports, or Electronic Sports, be
considered a sport? eSports are a form of a sport that deals with video games and their competitions
between professionals. eSports has risen over the years, with 2016 allowing the peak of the
popularity. "Consider this year's The International 2016 DOTA (Defense Of The Ancients) 2
Tournament," Chris Wood says to The State Press [eSports deserve their place in the world]. "The
total prize pool available to the winning teams of this tournament (August, 2016) was around $20
million dollars. In comparison, the prize money pool for the 2014 Rose Bowl was $22 million."
With winnings like this, I believe it is beyond safe to say that eSports are on the rise, and they mean
business.
Many other competitive games have been considered eSports in the past few years as well. CS:GO,
or Counter Strike: Global Offensive, is the number one eSport to date. CS:GO is a first–person
shooter developed by Valve which pits 10 players against each other on teams to fight for a common

My Life, The Arts, And World Events
Everyone strives to do better and succeed, why would people want to do worse? The key to
succeeding may be different across unique people, but a trait known as grit was introduced by a
psychologist named Angela Duckworth in a TedTalk, "...One characteristic emerged as a significant
predictor of success. It wasn 't social intelligence, it wasn 't good looks, physical health, and it wasn
't IQ: It was grit." Grit, in my words, is the capability of failing or persevering through difficulties
and still being able to succeed in the end. Whether you are or not familiar with grit, it has the
potential to change lives, and examples of this trait are shown in my personal life, the arts, and
world events. To begin with, the topic of grit can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

seemed like I was on the verge of quitting, and I followed through on my commitments. Not only is
this trait seen in my own personal experiences, but it also flourishes in the arts. Furthermore, the
trait of grit can be connected to a film named "The Martian" which is part of the arts. This movie,
originally a novel published by Andy Weir, was released in 2015 starring Matt Damon (Mark
Watney) and directed by Ridley Scott. The setting already starts on Mars when Mark, the botanist of
his crew, have set up base and are collecting rock samples. They see a massive dust storm

NHL with just six teams. Despite various efforts to initiate expansion after the war, including
attempted restarts of the Maroons and Americans franchises, the league's membership would remain

By the 1960s, however, it was becoming obvious that if the NHL did not expand, a rival league

United States the American Football League was starting to become very successful at the time,
convincing many people that a rival hockey league would also succeed. In particular, the Western

"People think that baseball is a boring sport to watch" (Miller). The games are very long, lasting an
average of three hours. The game can also go into extra innings which can add more than an hour.
The longest game lasted 8 hours and 25 minutes and went 33 innings in 1984. The score was only
4–3 (MLB.com). Baseball can be boring at some times, there will always be lulls in between pitches
and innings. Baseball also have expensive tickets. The MLB average is $31 per ticket. An average
family of four would have to pay more than $120 just to watch the game. The Boston Red Sox
average price is more than $50 (Statista.com). Many people cannot afford to go to a game. Another
thing that makes it less interesting is that the scores are low. Many MLB games I have watched
usually don't having scores that exceed 5 runs. When a team scores more runs and gets more hits,
the game is more exciting and intense. When teams are only getting four or five hits the entire game
and scoring 2 runs, it can slow the game down and make it more boring. As Sam Miller said in his
article, "What are they even trying to do in baseball, you know? What's the metaphor?" In football,
it's like war, tackle each other before they get to the end zone. Baseball, on the other hand, is more
like cops and robbers, you have to strategize and do things that aren't conventional in other sports.

Comparison Between Sports And Sports Essay
Esports vs Sports The roar of the crowd, the rush of adrenaline as you watch your favorite team take
the field, the excitement of watching your team score, and how you feel during a close game are all
aspects of watching sports that people tend to identify with. Sports aretraditionally been thought of
as physical activities. However, in recent years Esports, better known as competitive gaming, have
begun to take the world by storm with record prize pools and viewership numbers. Fans of
competitive gaming get to experience of all the same aspects that people that watch physical sports.
Both sports and competitive gaming have organizations and salaries for players who are also
allowed to take on sponsorships for themselves. In all sports they require some type of teamwork
and coordination to make certain plays happen, but competitive gaming in a game such as League of
Legends has a far different lifestyle than say, football. These two sports have many similarities like;
their reliance on teamwork to win, the players training days, their type of internal structure, and the
structure of their competitions and leagues; but also differ in multiple ways such as organizations
and players have different opportunities to succeed or fail. Physical sports and Esports show to be
very similar and vastly different. Football and League of Legends competitions are more alike than
most people would assume they are. We all can relate to one team that we root for like with the

The Influence Of Branch Rickey On Baseball
Branch Rickey was much more than the man who helped break baseball's color barrier. He created
things like batting helmets, advanced statistics, improved scouting and introduced African–
Americans into Major League baseball. He raised promising young talent through his farm system
to build championship teams. Branch Rickey founded the principles of baseball as we see it today
by developing scouting techniques as well as creating the minor league farm system so
organizations could raise talent profitably. Rickey's first influence on baseball was the development
of the minor league farm system. His idea of a farm system gave teams, especially poor teams, a
chance to develop talent within their organization instead of having to outbid other teams ... Show

He wanted to keep track how many total bases each player touched and where they hit the ball. "
(Rickey) hired the first statistician in baseball and used mathematical formulas to predict a team's
success in offensive and defensive categories."("Wesley Branch Rickey" Bio in Context) By
calculating what kind of team he had, whether it was a fast team that liked to run or a slower team
that had the capabilities to hit a ball out of the park, Rickey could find players that fit into his team's
style. He also helped future prospects hone these areas of the game by developing drills and gadgets
to help train players. "He came up with sandpits to teach players to slide; a set of strings to define
the strike zone and help pitchers with their control; the batting tee to help hitters hone their swings,
and chalk talks."(McCue) Rickey was a master of developing players and judging players based on
statistics as well as scouting them in person. He created tools to help players both physically and
mentally so they could become the best player they could be. Rickey expanded statistics so he could
better understand the value of a player and how productive he was for his team. This enabled him to

Why Is The First World Series Important In History
The first World Series was extremely important in history. The series changed the game forever. The
series hosted the best team in the American league and the best team in the National league. It
hosted the Boston Americans and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The world series was a best of nine and it
took place at Huntington Avenue baseball grounds in Boston. In an big effort to end a bitter rivalry
and promote unity in baseball, National League and newly established American League decided to
come together for a new kind of season finale. Nine years earlier, the two top teams in the National
League competed in an post–season championship in which Boston defeated Pittsburgh five games
to three. In 1903, both teams found themselves competing against one another in the first official
"World Series". Pittsburgh's Barney Dreyfuss and Boston's Henry Killilea agreed that their ball
clubs, who were both pennant winners, should meet in a best–of–nine playoff series for the "World
Championship." Game 1 of the series was a complete success as fans were treated to the best
baseball from both leagues. The Pirates played well on both sides of the ball as Deacon Phillippe
pitched a six hit game and right fielder Jimmy Sebring hit the first home run ever in World Series
history. He drove in four runs for a 7–3 victory. Game 2 was not bad either as Boston reflected
Pittsburgh's previous performance. They tied the series up when Bill Dinneen threw a three–hit
game and Patsy Dougherty hammered two homers in a 3–0 win. Pittsburgh's pitching staff, full of
illness and injuries, forced the Pirates to start ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

America has been fascinated with racing since the 1800's and there are so many types of auto racing
in America and each one is unique. Automobile racing is a competition race between cars and

Summary: Should College Football Replace The Bowl...
The Bowl Championship Series should be replaced by a regular playoff system. The Bowl
Championship Series is where the top 10 BCS–ranked college football teams play each other. The
top two ranked teams play in the championship game and the other eight play in four Bowl games.
The playoff system is the best way to get a true champion without the subjective and profit–
motivated system of the Bowl Championship Series that sometimes leaves the best teams out of the
championship game. College football should replace the Bowl Championship Series with a regular
playoff system because the world and college football will benefit more than with the old Bowl

Baseball Club History
The history of baseball in the United States can be traced to the 18th century, when amateurs played
a baseball–like game by their own informal rules using improvised equipment. The popularity of the
sport inspired the semipro national baseball clubs in the 1860s.
The earliest known mention of baseball in the U.S was a 1791 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts,
ordinance banning the playing of the game within 80 yards of the town meeting–house. In 1903, a
British sportswriter Henry Chadwick published an article speculating that baseball derived from a
British game called rounders. The first team to play baseball under modern rules were the New York
Knickerbockers. The club was founded on September 23, 1845, as a social club for the upper middle
classes of New York City, and was strictly amateur until it disbanded. The club members, which
included its president Doc Adams and Alexander Cartwright, formulated the Knickerbocker Rules,
which in large part dealt with organizational matters but which also laid out rules for playing the
game. Among the rules ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The NABBP split into two groups. The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players
operated from 1871 through 1875, and is considered by some to have been the first major league. Its
amateur counterpart disappeared after only a few years. William Hulbert's National League, which
was formed after the National Association proved ineffective, put its emphasis on "clubs" and not
"players". Clubs now had the ability to enforce player contracts, preventing players from jumping to
higher–paying clubs. Clubs in turn were required to play their full schedule of games, and not
forfeiting scheduled games once out of the running for the league championship, as happened often
under the National Association. A concerted effort was made to cut the amount of gambling on
games which was leaving the validity of results in

Narrative Essay On Sports Injury
Growing up in Middle Georgia, sports were played year–around. There was never a down time,

grew up less than three miles away from the Warner Robins American Little League. This is where I
started my passion for baseball. Every spring, my dad would sign me up to play. At the end of the
season, the coaches would pick the best players to play on the All–Star team. The All–Star team

The impact fractured my finger. The fractured finger ruled me out for the rest of the District
tournament, the State tournament, and the Region tournament. Fortunately, our team went
undefeated in each tournament to send us to the Little League World Series in Williamsport,
Pennsylvania. The second injury was much worse in nature. During the fall of 2014, I was a

The New York Yankees Baseball Organization
Over a 114–year period between 1901 and 2015, the New York Yankees baseball organization has
taken sole positioning as the most successful franchise in the professional baseball world. As a
whole the franchise has won: 43 American League pennants and 27 world championship titles. With
statistics and accomplishments this vast, it is no wonders the Yankees are renowned and
acknowledged as one of the most outstanding baseball teams in the sport. The New York Yankee's
franchise was founded in 1901, in Baltimore, Maryland. The franchise played its inaugural season
two year later on January 9, 1903. The founders of this historic franchise organization were two
gentlemen by the names of Frank Farrell and Bill Devery. This franchise has dominated the sport of
Major League Baseball over a century, recording 20 seasons with at least 100 wins "Hiergesell."
When the franchise was moved to Manhattan from Baltimore they received the name Highlanders
and were relocated to their new home field known as Hilltop Park "Yankees Timeline." The 1923
squad would always be the most memorable team because they defeated the New York Giants to
earn the first of a total of 27 World Series championships (the all–time record in professional
baseball). The New York Yankees (1936–1939 and 1949–1953) and the Oakland A's (1972–1974),

The Causes Of Early Basketball Dynasties In The United States
14.
Early Basketball Dynasties Several teams in both college and the professional level formed early
dynasties. Some say that this contributed to the unpopularity of the game during their reigns because
the outcomes were too predictable. In the NBA, the Minnesota Lakers had a dynasty going; led by
Mikan, they won championships in 5 of 6 seasons from 1949 to 1954. Even as the league changed
its rules, and as Mikan's scoring dipped, the Lakers rolled. However, the game itself was becoming
harder to watch. The Boston Celtics would continue where Minnesota left off. It started in 1957,
when the Boston Celtics defeated the St. Louis Hawks in a tough best of seven game series. That
was the first of an incredible 11 championships in 13 seasons.
Some say that the Celtics Destiny is the most incredible in history but the UCLA Bruins college
basketball team might have something to say about that. For 12 seasons, beginning with the 1963–
1964 season, Coach John Wooden and the Bruins won a record 10 NCAA titles; including seven in a
row. The only years they did not win were 1965–66 season where they had a bad run of injuries and
illnesses. Texas Western won that year and we'll discuss that importance later. The other year was
the 1973–1974 season. Coach Wooden was ill a good portion of that year and would retire the next
year. This was an amazing run and in my opinion solidified what is the greatest dynasty in the
history of sports. I say this because in college basketball you have

Persuasive Essay On Sports Vs Sports
With the NFL season coming to a close and the Superbowl a few days away, my friends began
planning on getting together for a Superbowl party. "Awesome!" I thought to myself and offered to
bring food to the party. I went to the grocery store to get food and saw that the store changed its
theme to be Super Bowl themed. I thought this was interesting to see that a little grocery store in the
State College area would change the layout and decorations of the store to appeal to the fans of the
game. As I noticed this, I started thinking about football and the impact it has on regular American
citizens nowadays. No other event this year would make my friends and me get together and hang

Football bring both passionate fans and average people together in its own unique way.
I realized that baseball serves the same function as football: promoting togetherness through the

Baseball And The American Civil War Essay
Baseball, a game played between two teams of nine on a field with a diamond–shaped series of four
bases. A prestige and unique game that is played all over the world but most beloved in the United
States, hence, why people refer to it as the national pastime due to its tradition and popularity.
Baseball consists of many complex rules and an extended history. In order for one to fall in love
with the game such as America has, one must understand the rules and history of baseball. Baseball
originates back to 1800s, from a man named Abner Doubleday, who was a Union Officer during the
American Civil War. Some say he invented the game in Cooperstown, New York, in 1839. There's
limited amount of information and facts on Doubleday being the original creator of the game. A
more accurate response to the question of how baseball originates would be that many scholars
believe that baseball was invented way before we can tell. In ancient cultures, such as those of the
Persians and Egyptians, there is evidence of games being played with balls and sticks. Games
similar to baseball continued to be played by civilizations throughout history but it was not until the

I-70 World Division Descriptive Writing
In October of 2014, there was plenty of buzz floating around the state of Missouri. This buzz was all
due to baseball. At the time, the two Missouri Major League Baseball teams were still alive: the Stt.
Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals. Both teams in their respective League Championship
Series. The buzz soon came to an end however as the Cardinals failed to move on however as the
San Francisco Giants defeated them 4 games to 1. It was the anticipation, however, of a possible "I–
70" World Series matchup that was undeniable. The thought of the biggest baseball event and
sporting event in the world coming down to 2 teams from the state of Missouri. However, this
unimaginable sporting event has already happened. When this writing assignment was assigned and
we were given a list of significant moments in history I was definitely caught up in which one to
choose. Then I came across the "I–70 World Series" and i thought to myself "perfect! This is about
the Redbirds. Well then you have to figure out who you're going to interview. Little did i know my

The Royals went with their ace in the series in Bret Saberhagen. On her way into the stadium my
mom talks about the atmosphere in the crowds. "The best way I could describe would be electric.
The Royals fans were especially rowdy because they had the momentum going into the game and it
was in Kansas City. The much anticipated game, however, turned out to be a blowout. St. Louis'
rotation did not fare as well as Motley hammered a two run homer off Tudor in the second, Balboni
delivered a two run single in the three run, third and Lonnie Smith launched a two run double in the
six run, fifth. George Brett went four–for–five and Motley finished with three hits in the 11–0
massacre that crowned the "Comeback Kings" as World Series Champions (Baseball

Major League Baseball In The 1800's
The great sport of baseball took a long time to develop into the game it is today. Major League
Baseball wasn't always a bunch of sunflower spitting guys hitting four homeruns a game, in fact, in
the early stages, very few were hit. Major League Baseball has grown tremendously since the 1800's
and it is still growing. Baseball was created in 1845 by Alexander Cartwright, however the first
official game wasn't played until 1846. In 1858, the National Association of Baseball Players was
created, which was the first official baseball league. Then, as baseball was picking up, the Civil War
caused it to slow down. This was until the Union soldiers spread the sport across the country
(Lahman). By the end of the war, baseball was as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

team in the MLB since they entered it in 1901. According to Statista.com, "The Yankees, which play

History Of The Pittsburgh Homestead Grays

  • 1. History Of The Pittsburgh Homestead Grays Some people may think that the Pittsburgh Pirates were the only team to play in Pittsburgh, but that is not true. The Pittsburgh Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords were the two Negro League teams. The Homestead Grays started in 1912. The Grays played independently until they became a part of the American Negro League in 1929. They only spent one season in the American Negro League and were independent again until 1932. In 1932, the Grays joined the East–West League. The East–West League only lasted that season. After a few more years of being independent, the Grays then joined the National Negro League. This league lasted the rest of the thirteen years of the Grays. The Grays were one of the most successful Negro League teams ever. The team acquired nine league titles, and three Negro League World Series titles. The team's final season was in 1950 ("Baseball History"). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were founded in 1930 and sponsored by the Crawford Bath House and Recreation Center. The Crawfords spent most of their years as an independent team. Then, in 1933, they joined the National Negro Leagues. The team won the Negro League title in both 1935 and 1936. After losing several key players, such as, Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Cool Papa Bell, the team was unable to recover and as a result, was forced to close in 1938 ("Baseball History"). Leroy "Satchel" Paige was known as the best and fastest pitcher to ever be a part of the Negro Leagues. Satchel Paige compiled a total of sixty–four consecutive scoreless innings, twenty–one straight wins, and a 31–4 win to lose record in 1933. He was given plenty attention bringing in sellout crowds. Some sports require more pads than others do. Not all athletes feel safe in their own sport. Some athletes are more prone to injury in other sports. The injuries players face in football are awful. It's a high risk sport. Players of the sport retire so early from the NFL because of the massive hits. It really takes a toll to their body. Some players retire by thirty years old for reasons like injuries. ACL/MCL tears are the most common injury that is actually serious. Hits, blocking shots, constantly being hit by sticks; all of these can cause some form of injury. Players face lots of bruises, but some of these can cause a more serious, long term injury such as knee, elbow and hand injuries. Basketball can be high risk. I've seen some very graphic injuries from watching a basketball game. All sports have some sort of injury possibility, but this oe would definitely be on the bottom of the rest. Main injuries are ankle sprains, jammed fingers, or some of the possible more severe injuries include knee injuries. My experience with injuries aren't a whole lot, because I would like to say I don't put myself into situation to get hurt a whole lot. I have faced a lot of bruises in lacrosse and they hurt, but they eventually go away. I have been in a lot of pain after a few slashes to my hand, I came out right away because of the pain. Boston held a 5–2 lead in the eighth inning, and Boston opted to stay with starting pitcher Pedro Martínez rather than go to the bullpen. New York rallied against the tired Martínez, scoring three runs on a single and three doubles to tie the game. Then in bottom of the 11th inning, Aaron Boone launched a solo home run to win the game and the pennant for the Yankees. Similar to Boston, Chicago had The Curse of the Billy Goat. The curse was supposedly placed on the Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball franchise in 1945 by Billy Goat Tavern owner William Sianis that lasted from 1945–2016. • 12. The Success Of The Buffalo Bills Essay Everyone has a specific skill set that they are good at. Some people are good with numbers, others have a gift for writing. The same is true in sports. The Buffalo Bills are very good at losing and disappointing their fans, while the Patriots are fantastic at bending the rules and winning Super Bowls. In baseball, each team is built around a specific group of players in order to create the best possible chance to win the World Series. Some of the greatest players have created seemingly unbreakable statistics. Joe DiMaggio had a hit in fifty–six consecutive games. Barry Bonds hit seven hundred and sixty–two home runs over his twenty–two–year career. Statistics like these only come about once in a generation. Teams are comprised of various talent. Some are like Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera always has a batting average over .300 with at least 25 home runs. These types of players are considered great hitters. Other's, like Stephan Drew, get a hit less than 20% of the time they have an at bat. Players similar to Drew's skill set have a job because they are very good at defense and their value on defense out ways their value on offense to their specific team. Baseball is sport rich with statistics. Almost anything one can come up with, has a statistic. In the last ten years alone, top executives, such as Billy Bean, have constructed teams based on advanced statistics and have been fairly successful, like the 2002 Oakland Athletics. Other teams, like the Houston Astros, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Descriptive Essay On Baseball As we were sitting there, you could feel the excitement running through the stadium. It was the same stadium that we've been to many times before. The smell of the hotdogs, the luscious ivy that was in the outfield, and the organ being played. All of the things were the same, but this time everything was different. Everyone knew what was happening. This could be the first time in over 100 years that the Cubs could make the World Series. As the game was getting close to over, finishing the 8th going into the 9th inning, we were hoping that this year would be the year to finally have the shot. We hoped that our lousy luck in the playoffs doesn't affect us again. This time we could have it, we were almost there. All of these years where our dream has fell apart finally coming together to put us in the right place. All of us prayed there wouldn't have to be a Game 7 and that it could happen tonight. It could be the day that we finally clinch the National League. The final inning was finally starting off. The nerves were streaming all throughout the ballpark, from the stands, to the bleachers, to the field. Aroldis Chapman was taking the mound ready to be the beast he normally was. His throws were like lightning, fast and shocking. The first batter of the inning came up. The at bat was quick and the hitter was struck out swinging like a wrecking ball. The next hitter comes up. After seeing a lot of speedy pitches and a long at bat, he finally drew a walk. All of the Cubs fans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Essay on The 1919 Black Sox Scandal The 1919 Black Sox Scandal The 1919 World Series resulted in the most famous scandal in baseball history. Eight players from the Chicago White Sox (later nicknamed the Black Sox) were accused of throwing the series against the Cincinnati Reds. Details of the scandal and the extent to which each man was involved have always been unclear. It was, however, front–page news across the country and, despite being acquitted of criminal charges, the players were banned from professional baseball for life. The eight men included the great "shoeless Joe Jackson," pitchers Eddie Cicotte and Claude "Lefty" Williams; infielders Buck Weaver, Arnold "Chick" Gandil, Fred McMullin, and Charles "Swede" Risberg; and outfielder Oscar "Happy" Felsch. ... This clause prevented players from changing teams without the permission of the owners. Without a union, the players had no bargaining power. Gamblers were often visibly present at ballparks and the fixing of games had been suspected since the mid–1850s. Rumors circulated that players supplemented their incomes by throwing single games. Several ballplayers had the reputation of working closely with gamblers. A small–time gambler, Joseph Sullivan, allegedly made money on inside tips from Chicago's Chick Gandil. Sullivan's bets were safer when he knew a pitcher or hitter was sick, hurt, or having an off week. Although gambling was intertwined with baseball long before the eight White Sox were accused of fixing the Series, the number of gamblers at ballparks had dramatically increased by 1919. Ironically, Comiskey posted signs throughout the park declaring, "No Betting Allowed In This Park." While the facts surrounding the throwing of the Series are confusing, people familiar with the case agree Gandil was the ringleader. He was able to interact with his players in a way that allowed them to perform at or above their potential, and he also had an incredible amount of knowledge for the types of players he needed to succeed. Competitive. Competition is a rivalry between two or more persons or groups for an object desired in common, usually resulting in a victor and a loser. Something to argue would be if a competition could legitimately be considered a sport. The word 'compete' is in the definition of sport after all. So, should eSports, or Electronic Sports, be considered a sport? eSports are a form of a sport that deals with video games and their competitions between professionals. eSports has risen over the years, with 2016 allowing the peak of the popularity. The earliest known mention of baseball in the U.S was a 1791 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, ordinance banning the playing of the game within 80 yards of the town meeting–house. In 1903, a British sportswriter Henry Chadwick published an article speculating that baseball derived from a British game called rounders. The first team to play baseball under modern rules were the New York Knickerbockers. The club was founded on September 23, 1845, as a social club for the upper middle classes of New York City, and was strictly amateur until it disbanded. The club members, which included its president Doc Adams and Alexander Cartwright, formulated the Knickerbocker Rules, which in large part dealt with organizational matters but which also laid out rules for playing the game. The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players operated from 1871 through 1875, and is considered by some to have been the first major league. William Hulbert's National League, which was formed after the National Association proved ineffective, put its emphasis on "clubs" and not "players". Clubs now had the ability to enforce player contracts, preventing players from jumping to higher–paying clubs. Clubs in turn were required to play their full schedule of games, and not forfeiting scheduled games once out of the running for the league championship, as happened often under the National Association. I was constantly playing a sport. Injuries were bound to happen, some worse than others. During my athletic career, two injuries were worse than others. I grew up less than three miles away from the Warner Robins American Little League. This is where I started my passion for baseball. Every spring, my dad would sign me up to play. With statistics and accomplishments this vast, it is no wonders the Yankees are renowned and acknowledged as one of the most outstanding baseball teams in the sport. The New York Yankee's franchise was founded in 1901, in Baltimore, Maryland. The franchise played its inaugural season two year later on January 9, 1903. Some say that this contributed to the unpopularity of the game during their reigns because the outcomes were too predictable. In the NBA, the Minnesota Lakers had a dynasty going; led by Mikan, they won championships in 5 of 6 seasons from 1949 to 1954. Even as the league changed its rules, and as Mikan's scoring dipped, the Lakers rolled. However, the game itself was becoming harder to watch. The Boston Celtics would continue where Minnesota left off. It started in 1957, when the Boston Celtics defeated the St. Louis Hawks in a tough best of seven game series. That was the first of an incredible 11 championships in 13 seasons. Some say that the Celtics Destiny is the most incredible in history but the UCLA Bruins college basketball team might have something to say about that. For 12 seasons, beginning with the 1963– 1964 season, Coach John Wooden and the Bruins won a record 10 NCAA titles; including seven in a row. The only years they did not win were 1965–66 season where they had a bad run of injuries and illnesses. Texas Western won that year and we'll discuss that importance later. The other year was the 1973–1974 season. Coach Wooden was ill a good portion of that year and would retire the next year. I thought this was interesting to see that a little grocery store in the State College area would change the layout and decorations of the store to appeal to the fans of the game. There's limited amount of information and facts on Doubleday being the original creator of the game. A more accurate response to the question of how baseball originates would be that many scholars believe that baseball was invented way before we can tell. In ancient cultures, such as those of the Persians and Egyptians, there is evidence of games being played with balls and sticks. Games similar to baseball continued to be played by civilizations throughout history but it was not until the early 1600s that Europeans first brought games involving a ball and a stick to the Americas.
