Feminist Theory In Dance
Feminism plays a large role in many dance styles in today's society. It is a key tool to use while
teaching younger students as proved by the women showcased in the films provided as well as in the
articles, "The lens in which I look through everything now is feminist theory and pedagogy"
(Jennifer Bolt). Throughout the interview, Bolt touched on how she felt as if she had a loss of voice
when it came to fighting for the dance program, it connects back to her learning about how women
had to fight for their voice in society when she was just a girl. Claire Wooten explained how she
tended to steer away from what she called "The F word" (Wooten) when directing her classes due to
how announcing feminist theory right off the bat seemed to put people off. Wooten stated she
directed her classes from an emancipatory standpoint, attempting to remove herself from the
equation to heighten student experience and self–progression.

Throughout many dance styles, not only ballet, there are many methods of teaching focused solely
on gender roles. In ballet, it is common for the male artists to be considered masculine and strong as
opposed to female dancers being thought of as delicate and dainty. For years women have been told
to act a certain way, speak a certain way and even sit a certain way, to "act lady like" and do as
you're told. This preconceived notion of women is reflected within dance as well, throughout my
Pinterest board I have pinned a multitude of images displaying gender roles. There is a particular
image that sticks out among the rest pertaining to this topic specifically, showing a male dancer
holding on to a female dancer who appears to be running off a cliff. This image displays the women
as vulnerable and possibly weak whereas the male is portrayed, yet again, as the "hero" in the

Dirty Dancing By Emile Ardolino
Dirty Dancing is a romantic American film made in 1987 and directed by Emile Ardolino. The film
stars the late Patrick Swayze as Johnny, a rebellious dance instructor and Jennifer Grey as the
innocent protagonist, Baby. The film follows Baby's time while she stays at Kellerman's, a resort in
the Catskill Mountains with her family. It shows her abandoning her innocence and sensibilities as
she meets older and more interesting people which lead her to rebel against her ruling father.
The narrative structure of the film helps to contribute to our individual responses. During the film
we see several attempts at the lift that is included in the dance that Baby and Johnny have to do
which is the climax of the film as the film builds up to it. We ... Show more content on

The first time we see Baby in a more rebellious and rowdy location which makes us see her in a new
light as she is far from her comfort zone. From the sequence prior to this we see Baby by means of
medium and close up shots looking very affectionate towards Johnny. From this we can safely say
that she has developed a crush of some sort. Baby offers to carry a watermelon, is invited to one of
their secret after–hours parties, she observes the 'dirty dancing' for the first time. The huge sequence
of the film that causes a lot of emotion to arise with the audience is the final scene. In this scene,
everything comes together and it is left on a very positive note which is pleasing for the audience.
Johnny, who was just fired, returns to the resort where there is a talent show taking place. This
sequence holds the two most memorable moments of the film. Johnny says to Baby's dad once he
storms to their table "Nobody puts Baby in the corner." Johnny and Baby are then on stage where
Johnny makes a brief speech about how she has been a good influence on her and that no one ever
gives him a chance which shows us, the audience, his vulnerable side. As he opens up slightly we
can feel for him which makes the sequence more emotional. The song "(I've Had) The Time of My
Life" comes on and the couple begin to dance. In this dance sequence we see the two bring up all of

Argumentative Essay: Is Cheer A Sport?
Is Cheer a Sport? The argument has been going on for centuries: should cheer be considered a real
sport? The answer is yes, it is a real sport. It may not have started out as one, but it has evolved into
something much bigger then it was. From here on, it will only get bigger and a lot more physically
demanding. Just like all other sports, cheer requires coordination to reduce injuries and the
motivation to work hard. Similar to all other "real sports," you have to have a sense of coordination.
Cheer isn't all about standing there to look pretty. It involves strength, stamina, balance, and timing
(reasons). To make sure they have all of these things, cheerleaders condition. Conditioning usually
consist of some type of squats, running, v–ups, planks, and more. According to one of the elements
brought up by the Women's Sports Foundation, a sport is a physical activity that involves throwing
something overcoming the resistance of mass (being). Some stunts include throwing a person up in
the air. This is an example of throwing something, or someone, to overcome the resistance of mass.

emergency room visits according to Consumer Product Safety Commission (most). Studies from
2009 show 96% injuries were caused by stunting (cheerleading). Through the time frame of 2010–

Gender Stereotypes In Dirty Dancing
Like all artwork, film both shapes and reflects the culture in which it was created. However, in order
to communicate the message contained within a film, the film must be marketed in such a way that
audiences enjoy and thus desire to watch it. By incorporating dance into a narrative film, film
writers, directors, and produces can make their product more appealing to audiences, thereby
increasing the film's consumption. Released in 1987, Dirty Dancing uses dance in this way to
enhance the plot of the movie as well as make the film more marketable to audiences. Drawing upon
gender stereotypes and the assumed male gaze, Dirty Dancing generally reinforces the gender
ideologies common in film released during the same time period, albeit prescribing slightly more
agency to female characters than was common in similar films. Simultaneously, the film features a
plot structured around the fantasy of achievement, creating a narrative around a plot device that is
historically popular among a variety of audiences. In this way, Dirty Dancing has become a lastingly
popular film, despite the fact that its use of the male gaze and gender stereotypes to tell a story
structured around a plot reinforcing the fantasy of achievement reveal the problematic dominant
views of its time period. Directed by Emile Ardolino, Dirty Dancing tells the story of a life–
changing summer spent at an upper–class resort. The plot centers around Baby Houseman, played
by Jennifer Grey, a naïve teenage girl from

Dance In Canada Essay
Dance is the word that is broadly that used to define a human behavior characterized by expressive
movements of the body. It is the grace, artistry, and classicality and precision that distinguishes
ballet from other dance styles. People have danced for many different reasons such a religious,
entertainment, tribal rituals, exercise or to simply to express something that cannot find voice in
words. For as long as people inhabited Canada, there has been dance and it has subsequently played
a role throughout Canadian history. In Canada dance history began with indigenous dance of First
Nations Peoples, but with the arrival of European settlers came more European dance forms such as
ballet, which have shaped dance in Canada into what it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the creation of the National Ballet Company, an artistic director had to be carefully selected as
this position must be filled by someone with extensive professional experience in ballet. The artistic
directors job in to help shape new visions, provide inspired leadership and contribute to the strategic
direction of the company. During this time period Toronto Boris Volkoff created another up and
coming dance company and may have been willing to accept the challenge of leading a better
financially resourced local company such as the National Ballet, but he was overlooked in favor of a
woman named Celia Franca. She was an incredibly gifted dancer, ballet mistress (woman who
directs and teaches and rehearses dancers in a ballet company) and an up emerging choreographer

Deborah Hay's Allegorical Dance Analysis
Susan Foster examines the connection between the Deborah Hay's approach to composition and
allegorical dances from the Renaissance. Foster is a choreographer and a Distinguished Professor in
the Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance at University of California, Los Angeles. She
studied and researched in areas including dance history and theory, choreographic analysis, and
corporeality. Foster acknowledges that on the surface, these styles of dance seem dissimilar;
Renaissance dancers wore extravagant costumes and the dances contained mythological content.
These dances were exotic, whereas Hay's pieces polarize Renaissance aesthetic; Foster described her
work as, "quiet" and "meditative" (101). Even so, Foster argued that these polar styles shared similar
purposes in their performances and their content stemmed from political principles ... Show more

"Her dances articulate linkages between individual and universal patterns, but seldom can they
interject layers of social, political, or moral commentary" (111). Foster blames the fact that
"resemblance is no longer a dominant mode of interpretation in our society" (111). Unfortunately,
this may be true to the majority of dance viewers. Even if the message is not as obvious as
allegorical meaning found in Renaissance pieces, Hay still challenges the audience to interpret it for
themselves. Her movement is more innovative and complex than the movement of her predecessors.
Maybe her exact intentions for the "bird dance" may not clearly resonate with every viewer, but it is
up to dancers and choreographer to engage the community in discussions to help people better view
and critique performances. There is also value in the ambiguity of allegorical references in
contemporary pieces because it leaves the viewer room to question, reflect, and

Dance Salsa Theory
It was interesting seems people come together and dance different music. I heard playing salsa and
tango music. I have watched movies about tango, but watching normal people dancing tango was
shocking. I was very impressed with an older couple dancing tango. They were dancing and at the
same time they were connecting with each other. They looked like a regular boring couple, but
dancing tango they look like they were intimate with each other. They did the basic steps, but they
were swinging around together at the same time. It was really good. In my part, I wanted to dance
salsa because I was raised dancing salsa, but for some reason I could not dance salsa because I was
thinking about the steps. My theory was to enjoy the music and dance to

Personal Narrative: My Dance Recital
Every time that the town of –––––––– is mentioned, my thoughts trail off to my dance recital in the
year of 2010. Back then, I was a dancer at a studio called Dance Mania. My closest friend at the
time, ––––––––, and I were the only students enrolled in that class. We beamed about the recital
since day one. We pondered over who would be in the audience and how we would receive this
immense trophy with our names in cursive engraved on a gold strip across the bottom. I have to tell
you, the costume had everything a girl in the second grade could ask for: a fluffy pink skirt lined
with black sequins, all accompanied by a pink neck tie and a long sleeved shirt attached to the skirt.
Just a couple weeks after the costumes were distributed, we got our pictures taken; when both of my

As the months until the recital strolled on by, my dance teacher, Miss ––––––––, made –––––– and I
rehearse the routine until we committed it to memory. However, four days before the recital, I
decided to test my "flying abilities". Little did I know, jumping off of a bucket from the top of a
short staircase and hard tiled landing with minimal carpet area at the bottom would have me with
tears; streaming down my cheeks and onto my frowning dimples at the sight of an x–ray portraying
a broken ulna in my arm. The idea of being able to fly off of a bucket safely was proven to be an
incorrect theory; also, the thought of participating in my dance recital was now a false statement too.
And for an eight year old, it was too much to comprehend. On the day of the recital, my parents and
I showed up; to show support for –––and––––. As the people had finished taking their seats and the
curtain was raised, the stage revealed a background that read "Dance Mania

Analysis Of Life Of A Leaf
Life of a Leaf, choreographed and directed by Professor Brigitte Rogers, was an aesthetically
pleasing performance of the timeline of a leaf's life displayed through dance. The movements were
able to connect with the audience and create an exemplary visual, auditory, and proprioceptive
experience. Ideas from The Phenomenology of Dance and Notes Towards a Performative Theory of
Assembly can be applied to analyze and develop an argument for the choreographer's message.
Using evidence from the production and interpretations from the different texts, the meaning of the
production can be found and discussed. My experience of Life of a Leaf was the first of it's kind
personally. Until I attended that production, I had never been to a dance performance, so every
aspect was new to me. First, my visual senses allowed the most insight during the performance. I sat
in the middle of a back row in a full Reves Recital Hall giving me a clear line of sight to the stage.
Once the dance begin, most of my attention concentration on the dance itself, although the crowd
and my notetaking did take away some focus. Sitting in the back, movements in the crowd would
redirect my attention from the movements of the dancers. Taking notes while the performance was
happening also restricted my full submission to the dance. The dance itself created a visually and
aurally appealing story of the life of a leaf. The performance began with the dancers in bright, green
costumes. Many of the movement

The relationship between sacred and secular in this performance is secular because it has no ties to

us of God. The habits rituals and routine of the Zuni Turkey Dance shows a secular meaning through
the use of the performance.

A Dance Teacher : A Theory And Sociocultural Theory Essay
A Dance Teacher's Role in Developing Students When choosing a job to apply to Piagetian theory
and sociocultural theory, I chose the position of a dance teacher. Children of all ages join dance
companies, and the experiences and interactions from this activity can have a great effect on their
development. After dancing for so many years I have first hand experience on how it can influence a
developing child. These two theories are important when understanding the ways in which a child
develops, and this paper will focus on how a dance teacher can aid the development of their students
using some of the information from these theories. Piaget's theory, according to the online lectures
and the textbook, is a constructivist theory; this means that a child constructs their own schemas
through world interaction. Children generate hypotheses, conduct experiments, and draw
conclusions based on the results they get from their outside sources. In relation to dance, children
interact with their surroundings and learn about their body movements, how to memorize dance
moves and choreography, how to work with others, and how it feels to fall down and get back up
again. They experiment with their surroundings and create schemas that help them categorize and
learn based on the environmental feedback. It is the dance teacher's job to facilitate this learning by
interacting positively with the students as well as maintaining a positive atmosphere for the children

Existential Therapy Paper
Throughout this semester, this class has been really hard on me as an individual. It has challenged

move away after graduation, go somewhere warm with friends after graduation, or a dream job, but
I always have things hold me back from perusing those dreams. Either financially or other things in
my life. Throughout this semester, I have found myself having moments connecting with the

something wrong with me? Or why am I not doing that? Learning about the different theories, and
techniques helped me better my life as an individual. Intro to counseling has taught me a lot. With

Symbolic Interaction Theory In Marc Bolan's Cosmic Dancer
In Billy Elliot, the first thing we hear is, Marc Bolan's, "Cosmic Dancer." The lyrics say; "I was
dancing when I was twelve." Right in this first scene, we are introduced to Billy Elliot. Immediately,
we see Billy and make that connection with the song. Here's the little boy. Then, the chorus says;
"I've danced myself right out the womb." All while Billy is striking poses in the air. The tone of the
movie has been set, and as an audience, we get to see it play out in its entirety. The focus theory
being discussed is; Symbolic Interaction Theory and also will be referred to as SIT. Throughout, we
will explore many elements that represent social psychology in regards to Billy's behavior. SIT is
sociological perspectives constructed through the interaction with others. It is how we communicate
with others through our actions and words. Our behavior always serves a purpose, it is meaningful.
There are four aspects to SIT that coincide with Billy and his role in the film. First, there is role
taking. Role Taking is putting ourselves in others positions to be able to feel and relate to them.
When Billy was at his friend Michael's house, he saw that Michael was in a dress. He was playing
dress up in his sister's clothes. Then, he put on lipstick to complete his look. Not understanding why
his friend was doing this, he agreed to let him put lipstick on him too. Knowing this was not normal
behavior for a little boy, Billy still accepted it. The experience of them both wearing

healing is sacred. Getting in the body, tapping into its wisdom, and externalizing the energy can
bring solace and restoration. Winton–Henry writes with passion and clarity about the invitation by
the Divine to dance. This notion has impacted my own journey with dance and established it as a
sacred gift to be received and to be given. Because of reading this book I believe that my
understanding of Dance as a sacred art form has been deepened. The many exercises and careful
directions that Winton–Henry provides will make it easy to incorporate dance into practice for both
individuals and groups (Winton–Henry, 2009). Whether a client is dealing with trauma, life purpose,

Dance Reflection
After spending a semester in improvisation class, I can honestly say that this course has been one of
the hardest, annoying, but probably the most relevant and important dance classes I have taken thus
far in my dancing life. This course also turned out to be the complete opposite of what I originally
thought it was going to be like. At the beginning of the semester, I was a firm believer that
improvisation, was any movement that a dancer does that is on the spot, random, wild, and without
thought. I also had this big belief that when a dancer performed an improvisation, that it was
supposed to make sense and show the talents of the dancer. With that being said, I came into the
class thinking that I was going to spend the semester listening to different types of music and
figuring out how to improvise to those music selections as well as learn how to improvise different
dance genres. Essentially, I thought I was going to learn how to improvise for the point of being
showy and performing. Of course, through this course, I realized that yes one can improvise for the
point of performance, but in this class, we did so much more than just do showy improvisations.
Instead, I got the chance to really explore my natural self as a dancer and learn the science behind
improvisation. Writing about improvisation is such a hard thing to do because improvisation is such
a complex and emotionally deep activity to participate in. However, what I am trying to get out, is
that what was

How Carlos Blasis And Arthur Mitchell's Role In The...
Carlos Blasis and Arthur Mitchell, two brilliant dancers, masters, and teachers in their own rights,
played a vital role in the evolution of ballet. Blasis, who was born in 1797's Italy, used his strong
mind and understanding of the craft to construct and raise the bar of ballet techniques worldwide.
Mitchell, an African American born in 1934's Harlem, spent his whole career breaking stereotypical
barriers on the presence of black people in ballet.
Their Ballet Tree
Growing up, Carlos Blasis studied in Bordeaux, France under Jean Dauberval (an alias for Jean
Bercher). Dauberval, famous for his comedy ballet, studied under French ballet master, Jean–
Georges Noverre. Noverre created and pioneered "ballet d'action" which is a movement of
transferring the emotions originally conveyed from the costumes, scenery, and props to the emotions
of a dancer's body and facial expression. At this point the focus, in Noverre's eyes, were too much
on the technical precision than the actual dance itself. (Crain, 2010) Noverre influenced Blasis as he
too was praised for his expressiveness as a professional dancer (Cohen, 1998).
For Arthur Mitchell, ballet wasn't his first choice in the style of dance. A guidance counselor
convinced the young Mitchell to audition for the High School of the Arts where he was more
interested in Modern dance. During high school, Karel Shook, who also taught other dance legends
like Alvin Ailey, Carmen de Lavallade, and Geoffrey Holder (Grant, 1985), was

Were the improvements from the early 20th Century critical to the development of contemporary
dance within America in the 21st Century?
Dance has changed from hundreds of years of tradition, to something modern, forever changing,
modern dance. With television shows such as "Dance Moms", and "So You Think You Can Dance",
modern dance has embodied a new form, transformed into a different style, representing its new
name entirely. Contemporary, developed from modern dance, is something modern, it is forever
changing, and it is contemporary.

Besides having the same beliefs behind the role the core plays, their individual contemporary styles
are different. Graham believed contemporary was developed through the breath in conjunction to the
movement of the diaphragm. In her theory, each step held its own sense of gravity, but each breath
contained the contraction and release to stop the submission to the body's natural, earthly pull. On
the contrary, Humphrey believed that, along with the core, plies were the base of her technique,
allowing herself to regularly fall before she recovered, and relying on her breathing rhythm, and
body's natural instincts and movements. In Humphrey's choreographed piece, "Air for the G String",
her dancers were seen to be walking in circles, showing her famous "fall and recovery" technique by
combining the use of their demi–pointe and isolating their torso to incline over the trunk of their
body. Both Humphrey and Graham started off with ballet, which they still used as the foundation of
their original contemporary technique, including alignment, turnout, posture, toe pointing, keeping
their shoulders down, and engaging their core, but quickly rebelled even further away, deeper into

Is Dance Curriculum A Means Of Communication Through...
It should act as means of helping students to develop a meaningful concept of themselves, their
relationships and their environment. The curriculum forms the basis for building skills in critical
thinking by providing guidelines to examine the reasons behind dancers' actions, analyzing
responses to learned lessons and performance done or attended (Koff, 1). The lessons provided
through curriculum should enable dancers to interpret choreographers' intent. Dance curriculum
forms the foundation for strengthening and refining creative thinking skills through the creation of
original interpretation of dances, through the construction of scenery, props, lighting and makeup.
The curriculum should provide guidelines and structures for learning to place culture and history in
its context through the relation of dance to the time and location. The curriculum should allow the
teaching of dance as a means of communication through performance (Smith, et al., 29).
This article, however, is concerned with the examination of the extent to which dance curriculum
offered to support students to enter their professions. The subsequent section provides a review of
the degree to which the existing curricula support dance graduates for entry into the profession. The
question addressed is to what extent does the dance curriculum support graduates for entry into their

my life and my thoughts to him or her. Because this is a pattern found in life, it translates directly
into my dancing as well. In dance patterning, trust is a major component. When dancing with

Dancing with someone else is very different. There is someone else to be aware of and need to be
able to support. There is risk in how close you are to the other person but the movements that come
from dance partnering such as lifts, manipulations, counterbalances also allow the person to feel risk
as well. Instead of hesitating when presented a challenging moment in partnering or a riskier
movement, fully taking in the risk for what it is, is a way to achieve flow. When we accept the risk
we are able to reach the pleasurable experience the body produces when it reaches the adrenaline
rush when presented with a high risk situation but then realizes it does not need to be in full fight or
flight response. The occurrence of taking chances and trying something outside of the comfort zone
is when you can explore new movement and break out of the comfortable habits (Urmston and
Hewison 221). Risk and flow are a symbiotic relationship in terms of contact improvisation and in
life as well. The authors break the concept of flow into nine different dimensions. One that really
connects with me is receiving unambiguous feedback. This is the idea to listen to your partner and
interpret the information he or she is giving you through their body and weight relationship. Another
dimensions that jumped out of me is concentration. This is the idea of being in the moment and
ignoring outside, competing thoughts in your life, especially if they are negative (Urmoston and
Hewison 222). I found when I stopped judging myself when I danced, I was able to become a more
effectively listener for my partner. Also, slowing our movement down sometimes aided me in being
able to know what information my partner is providing me and how I can respond. This helped
enhance the flow between both of us. Establishing trust and non–judgmental thoughts is a major
component in contact

How Did Mark Morris Influence The World Of Dance
Dance is an ever evolving form of art; in much the same way that one can categorize and
differentiate between eras and styles of architecture one can also do so with dance. These eras at
times have sharp delineations separating them from their antecedents, other times the distinction is
far more subtle. Traditional forms of dance were challenged by choreographers attempting to expand
the breadth and increase the depth of performance; preeminent among such visionaries was Seattle
born dancer and choreographer Mark Morris. Mark Morris' began as one of the millions of hopeful
individuals attempting to simply make a career in dance; he not only succeeded but managed to have
a lasting effect on the entire landscape of dance.

The piece was inspired by earlier works by George Balanchine and Merce Cunningham whom
Morris claims are the choreographers that have most influenced him. Morris has become so well
respected in his field that he was tasked with planning the ceremonies for the funeral of opera
legend Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, with whom he had worked with many times and had a friendly
relationship.
He is seen today as one of the most enduring forces in modern dance choreography, having
pioneered for decades. One of his most well–known works Gloria has been performed, with
adaptation, since 1981. He has also had the distinction of performing to the playing of world
renowned cellist Yo–Yo Ma on numerous occasions, with Ma remarking that "Mark always manages
to put the perfect movement to even my extemporaneous flourishes." His work on preparing for the
funeral of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, and his international performances have made him recognizable
around the globe. Having choreographed and or conducted (along with other recognizable
choreographers) special performances for dignitaries such as 3 sitting US presidents, the Emperor of
Japan, the Queen of England and a Premier of the Soviet Union has enlarged his admirers to
superstar levels.
Mark Morris managed to become a successful dancer in spite of several obstacles, though his
parents were very supportive Morris' body was atypical for a dancer. By his own description in

Movie Analysis: Soul Food
Soul food is a movie that portrays not only having food that is welcoming to the people, but having
to spend time together with family and friends to enjoy laughing, games, music, etc. In this movie,
two ways were presented in this movie, which are culture and socialization. Each of the four
theories have different explaination, but the theory that is closer explained about this film is under
the category of conflict. According to Kendell (2016), Karl Marx, the conflict theorist, made a
perspective stating that ideas are created and used by the ruling class or society consisting of the
most powerful members to affect the thoughts and actions of the other classes. Josephine Joseph,

house for an advanced form of business, but the sisters were against her idea because through their
point of view, the house is meant for tradition and keeping the family together. In this film, the
central idea of the story is that family always has to stay and support one another, and they need to
understand that there are always some hard challenges to deal with, but making through them as a

more importantly is maintaining the relationships and connections between the families. Mending

Analysis Of Rudolf Laban's Theory Of Dance
Born in Austro–Hungary in 1879, Rudolf Laban developed a theory that provided a means to
exploring and expanding one's movement vocabulary. Although frequently used in choreographic
processes, this toolset helps one explore different aspects of dance improvisation. Worldwide, his
theory of analyzing movement has helped dancers grow more creative in their improvisation. When
improvising, dancers often use varying levels of structure to control the direction of improvisation,
and this particular structure based in Europe is used in almost every setting of dance in academia.
Much of our exploration of dance improvisation involved delving into the eight movement "efforts"
that Rudolf Laban developed, and these eight effort qualities can be categorized into four different
groups: direction, weight, speed, and flow. For direction, movements can either be direct, which
means there is intention and thought before every movement, or indirect, where the direction of one
movement does not necessarily correspond to that of the next. For weight, movements can be either
heavy, which can often be visible or the weight of the limbs and the awareness of gravity and the
floor, or light, where a sensation of weightlessness or floating is often used. For speed, movements
can either be quick, where movements rapidly progress from one to the next, or slow, where the
urgency of time is neglected. For flow, movements can be either bound, where there is a sense of an
imaginary outside force acting

Write An Essay On Couples Dance Therapy
Borrowing from counseling and integrating areas of dance therapy expertise, we can generate a
theoretical framework for couples dance therapy. Much of couples counseling theory comes out of
attachment theory which dance therapists understand kinesthetically. Healthy sexuality requires the
kind of embodiment that dance therapy facilitates. More and more, dance therapists have understood
the body's functioning through the science of nervous system regulation. This workshop will share
couples exercises that strengthen individuality within relationship thus improving couple dances. We
will examine aspects of attachment theory and Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory which form the
foundation for these couples dance therapy exercises.

We will examine aspects of attachment theory and Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory which form the
foundation for these couples dance therapy exercises.
Pooling my training as a licensed professional counselor and a dance/movement therapist, over the
last twenty years I have developed improvisational exercises where couples explore connecting
palm to palm. Two–handed push explores boundaries. Alternated–handed push explores negotiation.
Leaning into one another palm–to–palm explores support. Disconnection of hands can stir
abandonment fear.
Couples dance/movement therapy separates attuned relating where there is a power differential like
child/caregiver from relating where there is an even playing field as is ideal in romantic
relationships. The palm–to–palm exercises help each individual strengthen self–regulation
sufficiently to tolerate the limited ways that couples can healthily support one another. This in no
way minimalizes the rich connection that is possible in romantic relating but helps couples open to
what is healthily available by accepting and grieving what is

The About The Dancing Plague
0Kelli Floyd
Mrs. Miller
CST 110–07
October 9,2016 Everyone has heard the phrase "dance til you drop", right? Well, in the year 1518,
some people started to take that literally. I've always been a fan of things that nobody could explain.
I think it's incredible that with all of the advancements in technology and science, there's still things
that have happened that make people scratch their heads and go, "huh?" When writing this speech, I
considered several different possibilities, the Bermuda Triangle, Amelia Earhart, but I finally settled
on this. This particular unexplained incident happened, as I said, in the year 1518. Today, I plan to
explain to you guys what the Dancing Plague was, similar instances and effects, and what could
have possibly caused it.
First, let me give you the background. In the year 1518 a single woman suddenly began dancing in
the streets of Strasbourg, France. There was no music playing at the time to prompt her to start
dancing and evidently, she seemed upset to be dancing. By the end of a week, somewhere between
thirty and forty people had started to dance with her. Within a month, more than 400 people were
dancing, without stopping. For whatever reason, the authorities and leaders of the town seemed to
think that the best way to stop the dancing was to keep people dancing. It makes no sense to me, but
I guess they figured they would dance it out of their system. They built a stage for them to dance on,
got professional dancers to dance with

Dance Subcultures
When I was four years old I was introduced to a tall, petite, beautiful ballerina who spun around the
room with elegance, and effortlessly captured the crowd with her stunning abilities. As a little girl, I
sparkled with admiration and was inspired to be all she was, it was from that point on, that I
ventured into an unknown world of art, strength and expression. Now being eighteen years old with
about fourteen years of experience in the dance world, I have learned and developed the norms,
values and practices of the culture, and the conflicting theory within it. Subcultures are "A set of
distinctive values, norms, and practices within a larger culture." (Brym and Lie 2012: 47). Dance in
this case is placed under the subculture of sports; sports in many ways obtain special kinds of
standards within the culture. Sports value the need for strength and courage to be the best; in other
words, the importance of competition, is quite relevant within a player and team. To compare,
dancers value competition as a way to strive for the winning spot; if they fail to do so, they believe
they have destroyed all they have worked for. In spite of that, sports have set numerous norms with
in the culture, norms are defined as certain types of 'standards' which were created for the players to
avid by as guidelines to how they should act, or react in certain situations. For example, if you do
not place first, you are taught to not show your defeat in public, as it shows bad sportsman ship to

The History and Evoluition of Dance
Modern dance was created as a rebellion against the prevalent dance forms of the time, ballet and
Vaudeville. It is a form of theatrical dance, known for its continual fusion of non–western style and
ideas, which allows for a fresh source of movement inspiration. Choreographers rejected what they
classified as the inflexible and imperialistic nature of ballet, and in order to be taken seriously as
artists rather than simple entertainers they created a new art form. Artists Loie Fuller, Isadora
Duncan, and Ruth St. Denis are considered to be the pioneers of modern dance in America. Dance is
a social institution, recognized as being an important function in civilized life. The following essay
will focus on the theory and work of artist Isadora Duncan, while incorporating lecture notes and
articles of both authors Sally Bane and Ann Daly to explain the historical situations that culminated
in the development of early modern dance. Arising from the 20th century modern dance was a form
of cultural collaboration and exploration, as well as a resistance to colonial repression. Modern
dance allowed for the experimentation of the new as well as a freer form of dance movement.
Choreographers drew on exotic sources, and example of this illustrated in the work of Isadora
Duncan with her use of Greek culture as a movement inspiration. Artists act as both the
choreographer and performer creating their own conventions, or dance language.

Evil In Dance Mom
Evil is something in our world that is very overlooked and not talked about. To be "evil" is to
encourage harm or hate toward another person other than yourself. But Why is there evil? If a
person is evil, are they born evil? Or what makes a person evil? There has always been a constant
feud between the nature vs. nurture debacle. The say that nature "theory holds that genetic influence
over abstract traits" however, it is nurture that affects our behavioral innocence. People, places, and
our experiences can affect how we act towards others. How behavior is a huge factor when dealing
with other people. It can affect how we treat others and how others treat us.

Miller decreases her student's self–esteem and verbally abuses her students. The verbal abuse Abby

children or young teens may seem themselves as unloved, neglected, or view themselves as less than

Musical Analysis Of Singin In The Rain
Going over sextuple the budget, singin' in the rain has stood the test of time to be the best musical of
all time (IMDb). It contains notable songs that we still use today like Good Morning. The reason
why I picked the film for my scene analysis is because it was the first musical I actually enjoyed. I
also picked it because it was the latest film I watched and it is still fresh in my mind. The only part
that I did not like or did not get was the broadway musical part. It seemed like it was a time filler
and nothing else. The scene I am going to talk about is the one where the musical score "Singin' in
the rain" happens. I chose it because it is singin' in the rains most iconic scene. I also chose it since I
think it has a couple references and foreshadowing in the scene. This scene in singin' in the rain has
the theme of happiness. The scene starts with a long shot showing Kathy and Don saying goodnight
and flirting with each other. Their flirting right away shows that this is a happy scene. The flirting
ends with a kiss and Kathy goes inside their house. Don walks to the car with his arm out, looking at
the sky with a smile on his face. He tells his taxi driver to drive off and continues to walk in the rain.
He begins to sing "singin' in the rain" in the rain with a smile on his face. Most movies use the rain
for a sad, gloomy mood. In this scene, the rain is used to show happiness and determination. He puts
down and folds up his umbrella and continues walking and

Isadora Duncan: Pioneer of Modern Dance
"Movements are as eloquent as words." (Duncan, 440) Mid nineteenth centuries was a period of
rigid and standardized ballet which tortured and restrained their body and mind. Against that
society's convention, there was a woman who tried to communicate with people through her dance.
She, Isadora Duncan, was a pioneer of the modern dance, and her dance embraced her sophisticated
ideals. Even though the public remember her only with the complicated and scandalous rumors
about her lovers and dramatic death by scarf, Isadora Duncan's new style of dance which led a new
paradigm reflected freedom–not only for herself but also for the society. Purely, she extricated
people to the freedom by directly expressing her soul by her movements.
Duncan expressed her emotion through her free movements in her dance. Unlike other dancers in
that time, she valued the "connection between her own thought and feelings" not physical skills in
her art, as Naranjo states. (Naranjo, 1) Isadora Duncan said, "These ugly and false positions in no
way express that state of unconscious Dionysiac delirium which is necessary to the dancer.
Moreover, movements, just like harmonies in music, are not invented; they are discovered." (Flitch,
106) She believed ballet's measured movement is against the true art of dance which freely
expresses the dancer's emotion. Watching the practicing scene of Royal Ballet School students, she
described that they were like suspects who suffer from cruel investigation in the

Compare and Contrast of Classical Ballet and Modern Dance
Dance is one of the most beautiful, expressive forms of art known to mankind. It expresses joy, love,
sorrow, anger, and the list truly goes on for all the possible emotions that it can convey. Dance not
only can express how one feels, but it can tell a story or even be used to praise a higher power.
Dance has intricately played an important role to every culture over the course of time. Two forms
of dance that have not only stood against the test of time but have influenced the development of
other various styles of dance is none other than Classical Ballet and Modern Dance. Classical Ballet

Petipa's production of Swan Lake is a beautiful example of the structure movements that dancers
must perform; in the clip titled Odile entrance & Black Swan pas de deux, you see "The Black
Swan" perfect posture and balance, dancing on en Pointe all the while managing to gracefully
seduce the prince through her seductive movements and entrancing expressions. In contrast Modern
dance focus is on the dancer expressing their inner most emotions and feelings through free flowing
movements. The modern dancer uses their whole body more naturally and fluidly to convey what
their current emotional state is, unlike classical ballet where the ballerina at all times keeps an
upright posture, and performs with structured, angular lines. Martha Graham's "Frontier" is a great
example of the free movements of Modern dance; In this performance Martha Graham uses her
whole body to move to the rhythmic sounds of the drums and music, you can clearly see that there is
no confined structure in this performance, she is completely moving organically to how she is
feeling and what she is trying to convey through her movements. Classical ballet took a step forward
and revived prominent roles for men; whom previously the Romantic era had solely focused on the

Observation Dancers And The Classroom
For this observation dancers were observed from the classroom to the stage. I participated in the
dance class and watched from aside on stage. This was specifically this weekI focused on the
language and communication between the dancers and dance teachers/professors based on their
interactions or lack there of. This was done in the dance room and in the theater, which have
different affects on the dancers. Dance, defined as moving rhythmically to music and typically
following a set sequence of steps, is a a social phenomenon that has principles of symbolic
interaction theory seen through language and communication. Symbolic interaction is seen through
the location– stage, room, not dancing– and verbal language, which includes movement, technique,
and rhythm. This interaction is also seen in the specific communication, either positive or negative,
with the amount of intimacy and knowledge. All this connects to one another to create a symbol
among dance and dancers to interact. Body language varies between the places dancers are either in
the dance room, the stage, or not in dance by any means. In the dance room there is a certain
etiquette to embody, which is a positive attitude and a time to learn. Before stage or a performance a
serious aspect is seen and their is supposed to be a positive tension. During the stage performance
the etiquette is to remain calm and do what was practiced. When dancers are not in a dancing
environment there a whole different persona

Late Adulthood Research Paper
Reflection of Late Adulthood
For this paper, I had the privilege of interviewing one of my friend's grandmother. Her name is
Jamie Hansen and she is a healthy and active 68–year–old grandmother. In the beginning of the
phone call, I asked some basic background knowledge questions such as how many grandkids she
has and if she was a widower or not. I found out that she and her husband are happily married and
that she has six grandchildren. As I got to know her more I started asking questions that pertained to
the interview aspect of social theories. I figured out that Mrs. Hansen's responses led to an
application of the continuity and socioemotional selective theories. The continuity theory has a
correlation to Mrs. Hansen's late adulthood and can be defined when "...aging adults strive to
maintain a personal system...that promotes life satisfaction by ensuring consistency their past and
anticipated future" (Berk 615). In order for me to come to the reflection that Mrs. Hansen portrays
the continuity theory, I asked what her interests were and what she use to do at a younger age versus
what she is involved in today. She shared with me that she used to be a part of a dance group in her
late 20's to mid–30's and now that she has free time she says that she attends her young seven–year–

Summary Of My Papa's Waltz
The Waltz in a Ballroom of my Memory
A waltz is a beautiful dance done between two partners in 3–4ths time; a magical dance done
rhythmically around a ballroom. Cinderella and her prince did it; Belle and the Beast did it. Now we
see that Theodore Roethke and his father have done it. While the subject of "My Papa's Waltz" has
spurred passionate academic debates from professors, scholars, and students alike, the imagery,
syntax, and diction of the poem clearly supports the interpretation that Theodore Roethke wrote "My
Papa's Waltz" as a reflection on the short childhood memories he had with his father. Indeed, the
theory that the author's father was abusive, is agreeable to a point, I cannot accept the overall
conclusion that the whole poem was written as a reflection on the author's abuse from his father.
"The hand that held my wrist[, w]as battered on one knuckle," Roethke states in stanza 3. Though
one can see how the two lines can be taken as if the father was firmly grasping the child's wrist,
while at the same time, others see it as a father gently holding ... Show more content on

Although many can argue that this poem is entirely based on the abuse his father brought upon
Roethke, Many others believe that this poem is a reflection of his childhood memories, which the
author remembers fondly. Not only had Roethke's father died when he was a teenager, but his uncle,
to which he was very close to, committed suicide. Considering he was surrounded by a dense cloud
of death, It is obvious that the poem is about fond memories Roethke remembers about his father
many years ago. Roethke didn't have the best relationship with his father, there were some ups and
downs, to which we can all relate to. However, he loved his father more than anything, which is just

Criticism Of Marie Salole
In the early eighteenth century, men held a significant role at the court and in the repertory theatres
in Paris and London. The management structure in the Opera was very strict. It was not permitted
for public reform and all male–group were not allowed to change. The state–appointed Academie
Royale de Danse controlled the development of dance. During that period, men created the dance
choreographies, dance music, and writings on dance; while women interpret the choreographies
created by men. As Christine Battersby mentioned in her theory that women were excluded from the
definitions of creative genius from male writers. However, Marie Sallé broke through this tradition –
she was the first female dancer who created her own choreographies in the opera houses of London
and Paris. Many have suggested that she was a talented performer. Nevertheless, her unusual
behaviour on stage was unacceptable in the early period. Therefore, she received many negative
criticism and scandals in her life. Marie Sallé was born in France in 1707. She was a prominent and
influential dancer, teacher, and choreographer in the early 18th century. The impression she gave to
the audience was her virtue image. In Roman times, females who were vestal virgins got exempt
from guardianship. It indicates that people believed that she was an independent women. Her first
public performance was at London's Lincoln's Inn Fields with her brother Fancis in 1716. She

For this particular activity, I planned a music session with the children in order to provide them the
opportunity to play various instruments and sing along with the songs. I placed the basket full of
musical instruments in the middle of the circle of children and put on a CD's of children songs and
encouraged the children to pick one to play with. Everyone eagerly grabbed their favorite instrument

The theory I recognize in this activity is the Emilia Reggio belief that children should have control
over their learning. While I had planned a musical activity with the children, they guided their
learning experience in a different direction. Not only did the children have control over their
learning environment, they also were able to learn through movement which is also an Emilia
Reggio theory. I noticed this theory in practice as the children became increasingly interested in
moving and dancing, as opposed to, playing the instruments. When the youngest girl asked if she
could dress up as a ballerina I took this as an opportunity for them to enhance their experience with
make believe. Additionally, while they were dancing, each child was free to move around

Feminist Theory In Dance

  • 1. Feminist Theory In Dance Feminism plays a large role in many dance styles in today's society. It is a key tool to use while teaching younger students as proved by the women showcased in the films provided as well as in the articles, "The lens in which I look through everything now is feminist theory and pedagogy" (Jennifer Bolt). Throughout the interview, Bolt touched on how she felt as if she had a loss of voice when it came to fighting for the dance program, it connects back to her learning about how women had to fight for their voice in society when she was just a girl. Claire Wooten explained how she tended to steer away from what she called "The F word" (Wooten) when directing her classes due to how announcing feminist theory right off the bat seemed to put people off. Wooten stated she directed her classes from an emancipatory standpoint, attempting to remove herself from the equation to heighten student experience and self–progression. While working on my Pinterest board I was able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout many dance styles, not only ballet, there are many methods of teaching focused solely on gender roles. In ballet, it is common for the male artists to be considered masculine and strong as opposed to female dancers being thought of as delicate and dainty. For years women have been told to act a certain way, speak a certain way and even sit a certain way, to "act lady like" and do as you're told. This preconceived notion of women is reflected within dance as well, throughout my Pinterest board I have pinned a multitude of images displaying gender roles. There is a particular image that sticks out among the rest pertaining to this topic specifically, showing a male dancer holding on to a female dancer who appears to be running off a cliff. This image displays the women as vulnerable and possibly weak whereas the male is portrayed, yet again, as the "hero" in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Dirty Dancing By Emile Ardolino Dirty Dancing is a romantic American film made in 1987 and directed by Emile Ardolino. The film stars the late Patrick Swayze as Johnny, a rebellious dance instructor and Jennifer Grey as the innocent protagonist, Baby. The film follows Baby's time while she stays at Kellerman's, a resort in the Catskill Mountains with her family. It shows her abandoning her innocence and sensibilities as she meets older and more interesting people which lead her to rebel against her ruling father. The narrative structure of the film helps to contribute to our individual responses. During the film we see several attempts at the lift that is included in the dance that Baby and Johnny have to do which is the climax of the film as the film builds up to it. We ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first time we see Baby in a more rebellious and rowdy location which makes us see her in a new light as she is far from her comfort zone. From the sequence prior to this we see Baby by means of medium and close up shots looking very affectionate towards Johnny. From this we can safely say that she has developed a crush of some sort. Baby offers to carry a watermelon, is invited to one of their secret after–hours parties, she observes the 'dirty dancing' for the first time. The huge sequence of the film that causes a lot of emotion to arise with the audience is the final scene. In this scene, everything comes together and it is left on a very positive note which is pleasing for the audience. Johnny, who was just fired, returns to the resort where there is a talent show taking place. This sequence holds the two most memorable moments of the film. Johnny says to Baby's dad once he storms to their table "Nobody puts Baby in the corner." Johnny and Baby are then on stage where Johnny makes a brief speech about how she has been a good influence on her and that no one ever gives him a chance which shows us, the audience, his vulnerable side. As he opens up slightly we can feel for him which makes the sequence more emotional. The song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" comes on and the couple begin to dance. In this dance sequence we see the two bring up all of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Argumentative Essay: Is Cheer A Sport? Is Cheer a Sport? The argument has been going on for centuries: should cheer be considered a real sport? The answer is yes, it is a real sport. It may not have started out as one, but it has evolved into something much bigger then it was. From here on, it will only get bigger and a lot more physically demanding. Just like all other sports, cheer requires coordination to reduce injuries and the motivation to work hard. Similar to all other "real sports," you have to have a sense of coordination. Cheer isn't all about standing there to look pretty. It involves strength, stamina, balance, and timing (reasons). To make sure they have all of these things, cheerleaders condition. Conditioning usually consist of some type of squats, running, v–ups, planks, and more. According to one of the elements brought up by the Women's Sports Foundation, a sport is a physical activity that involves throwing something overcoming the resistance of mass (being). Some stunts include throwing a person up in the air. This is an example of throwing something, or someone, to overcome the resistance of mass. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. Gender Stereotypes In Dirty Dancing Like all artwork, film both shapes and reflects the culture in which it was created. However, in order to communicate the message contained within a film, the film must be marketed in such a way that audiences enjoy and thus desire to watch it. By incorporating dance into a narrative film, film writers, directors, and produces can make their product more appealing to audiences, thereby increasing the film's consumption. Released in 1987, Dirty Dancing uses dance in this way to enhance the plot of the movie as well as make the film more marketable to audiences. Drawing upon gender stereotypes and the assumed male gaze, Dirty Dancing generally reinforces the gender ideologies common in film released during the same time period, albeit prescribing slightly more agency to female characters than was common in similar films. Simultaneously, the film features a plot structured around the fantasy of achievement, creating a narrative around a plot device that is historically popular among a variety of audiences. In this way, Dirty Dancing has become a lastingly popular film, despite the fact that its use of the male gaze and gender stereotypes to tell a story structured around a plot reinforcing the fantasy of achievement reveal the problematic dominant views of its time period. Directed by Emile Ardolino, Dirty Dancing tells the story of a life– changing summer spent at an upper–class resort. The plot centers around Baby Houseman, played by Jennifer Grey, a naïve teenage girl from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is the grace, artistry, and classicality and precision that distinguishes ballet from other dance styles. People have danced for many different reasons such a religious, entertainment, tribal rituals, exercise or to simply to express something that cannot find voice in words. For as long as people inhabited Canada, there has been dance and it has subsequently played a role throughout Canadian history. In the creation of the National Ballet Company, an artistic director had to be carefully selected as this position must be filled by someone with extensive professional experience in ballet. The artistic directors job in to help shape new visions, provide inspired leadership and contribute to the strategic direction of the company. During this time period Toronto Boris Volkoff created another up and coming dance company and may have been willing to accept the challenge of leading a better financially resourced local company such as the National Ballet, but he was overlooked in favor of a woman named Celia Franca. She was an incredibly gifted dancer, ballet mistress (woman who directs and teaches and rehearses dancers in a ballet company) and an up emerging choreographer imported from London. • 11. Deborah Hay's Allegorical Dance Analysis Susan Foster examines the connection between the Deborah Hay's approach to composition and allegorical dances from the Renaissance. Foster is a choreographer and a Distinguished Professor in the Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance at University of California, Los Angeles. She studied and researched in areas including dance history and theory, choreographic analysis, and corporeality. Foster acknowledges that on the surface, these styles of dance seem dissimilar; Renaissance dancers wore extravagant costumes and the dances contained mythological content. These dances were exotic, whereas Hay's pieces polarize Renaissance aesthetic; Foster described her work as, "quiet" and "meditative" (101). Even so, Foster argued that these polar styles shared similar purposes in their performances and their content stemmed from political principles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Her dances articulate linkages between individual and universal patterns, but seldom can they interject layers of social, political, or moral commentary" (111). Foster blames the fact that "resemblance is no longer a dominant mode of interpretation in our society" (111). Unfortunately, this may be true to the majority of dance viewers. Even if the message is not as obvious as allegorical meaning found in Renaissance pieces, Hay still challenges the audience to interpret it for themselves. Her movement is more innovative and complex than the movement of her predecessors. Maybe her exact intentions for the "bird dance" may not clearly resonate with every viewer, but it is up to dancers and choreographer to engage the community in discussions to help people better view and critique performances. There is also value in the ambiguity of allegorical references in contemporary pieces because it leaves the viewer room to question, reflect, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I have watched movies about tango, but watching normal people dancing tango was shocking. I was very impressed with an older couple dancing tango. They were dancing and at the same time they were connecting with each other. They looked like a regular boring couple, but dancing tango they look like they were intimate with each other. They did the basic steps, but they were swinging around together at the same time. It was really good. Thesis For My Papa's Waltz Literary Research Report: The Waltz "The waltz never quite goes out of fashion; it is always just around the corner; every now and then it returns with a bang... it is sneaking, insidious, disarming" (Menken). The Waltz is a lively and fast paced dance; it allows for people to enjoy music and each other's company. "My Papa's Waltz", by Theodore Roethke, is a cleverly titled piece that takes the word "waltz" in an entirely different direction. • 17. Personal Narrative: My Dance Recital Every time that the town of –––––––– is mentioned, my thoughts trail off to my dance recital in the year of 2010. Back then, I was a dancer at a studio called Dance Mania. My closest friend at the time, ––––––––, and I were the only students enrolled in that class. We beamed about the recital since day one. We pondered over who would be in the audience and how we would receive this immense trophy with our names in cursive engraved on a gold strip across the bottom. I have to tell you, the costume had everything a girl in the second grade could ask for: a fluffy pink skirt lined with black sequins, all accompanied by a pink neck tie and a long sleeved shirt attached to the skirt. Just a couple weeks after the costumes were distributed, we got our pictures taken; when both of my arms were used to emphasize strong emotion to form a statuesque obtuse angle in the ... Little did I know, jumping off of a bucket from the top of a short staircase and hard tiled landing with minimal carpet area at the bottom would have me with tears; streaming down my cheeks and onto my frowning dimples at the sight of an x–ray portraying a broken ulna in my arm. The idea of being able to fly off of a bucket safely was proven to be an incorrect theory; also, the thought of participating in my dance recital was now a false statement too. And for an eight year old, it was too much to comprehend. On the day of the recital, my parents and I showed up; to show support for –––and––––. As audiences across the world prepare for dance performances, they typically expect to see something that is lively, exciting, and unique. However, what most audiences of dance and musical performances neglect to consider is the origins and importance these forms of dance and music have on culture. It is truly astounding how synonymous music and history have been and continue to be. In the late 1980's the popularity of breakdancing had begun to heavily diminish. People failed to see the significance behind breakdancing and the impact it had on New York City's urban youth in the early 1970's. • 21. Analysis Of Life Of A Leaf Life of a Leaf, choreographed and directed by Professor Brigitte Rogers, was an aesthetically pleasing performance of the timeline of a leaf's life displayed through dance. The movements were able to connect with the audience and create an exemplary visual, auditory, and proprioceptive experience. Ideas from The Phenomenology of Dance and Notes Towards a Performative Theory of Assembly can be applied to analyze and develop an argument for the choreographer's message. Using evidence from the production and interpretations from the different texts, the meaning of the production can be found and discussed. My experience of Life of a Leaf was the first of it's kind personally. Until I attended that production, I had never been to a dance performance, so every aspect was new to me. First, my visual senses allowed the most insight during the performance. I sat in the middle of a back row in a full Reves Recital Hall giving me a clear line of sight to the stage. Once the dance begin, most of my attention concentration on the dance itself, although the crowd and my notetaking did take away some focus. Sitting in the back, movements in the crowd would redirect my attention from the movements of the dancers. Taking notes while the performance was happening also restricted my full submission to the dance. The dance itself created a visually and aurally appealing story of the life of a leaf. • 25. A Dance Teacher : A Theory And Sociocultural Theory Essay A Dance Teacher's Role in Developing Students When choosing a job to apply to Piagetian theory and sociocultural theory, I chose the position of a dance teacher. Children of all ages join dance companies, and the experiences and interactions from this activity can have a great effect on their development. After dancing for so many years I have first hand experience on how it can influence a developing child. These two theories are important when understanding the ways in which a child develops, and this paper will focus on how a dance teacher can aid the development of their students using some of the information from these theories. Piaget's theory, according to the online lectures and the textbook, is a constructivist theory; this means that a child constructs their own schemas through world interaction. Children generate hypotheses, conduct experiments, and draw conclusions based on the results they get from their outside sources. In relation to dance, children interact with their surroundings and learn about their body movements, how to memorize dance moves and choreography, how to work with others, and how it feels to fall down and get back up again. They experiment with their surroundings and create schemas that help them categorize and learn based on the environmental feedback. It is the dance teacher's job to facilitate this learning by interacting positively with the students as well as maintaining a positive atmosphere for the children to learn and create ... There have been times in class I just sit there and think is this really what I pictured my life to be like. I have many dreams to study abroad, move away after graduation, go somewhere warm with friends after graduation, or a dream job, but I always have things hold me back from perusing those dreams. Either financially or other things in my life. Throughout this semester, I have found myself having moments connecting with the therapist as he was talking to Stan. Which kind of scared me because I would think is there something wrong with me? Or why am I not doing that? Learning about the different theories, and techniques helped me better my life as an individual. Intro to counseling has taught me a lot. Right in this first scene, we are introduced to Billy Elliot. Immediately, we see Billy and make that connection with the song. Here's the little boy. Then, the chorus says; "I've danced myself right out the womb." All while Billy is striking poses in the air. The tone of the movie has been set, and as an audience, we get to see it play out in its entirety. The focus theory being discussed is; Symbolic Interaction Theory and also will be referred to as SIT. Throughout, we will explore many elements that represent social psychology in regards to Billy's behavior. SIT is sociological perspectives constructed through the interaction with others. It is how we communicate with others through our actions and words. Our behavior always serves a purpose, it is meaningful. There are four aspects to SIT that coincide with Billy and his role in the film. First, there is role taking. Role Taking is putting ourselves in others positions to be able to feel and relate to them. When Billy was at his friend Michael's house, he saw that Michael was in a dress. He was playing dress up in his sister's clothes. Then, he put on lipstick to complete his look. Not understanding why his friend was doing this, he agreed to let him put lipstick on him too. • 35. Dance Reflection After spending a semester in improvisation class, I can honestly say that this course has been one of the hardest, annoying, but probably the most relevant and important dance classes I have taken thus far in my dancing life. This course also turned out to be the complete opposite of what I originally thought it was going to be like. At the beginning of the semester, I was a firm believer that improvisation, was any movement that a dancer does that is on the spot, random, wild, and without thought. I also had this big belief that when a dancer performed an improvisation, that it was supposed to make sense and show the talents of the dancer. With that being said, I came into the class thinking that I was going to spend the semester listening to different types of music and figuring out how to improvise to those music selections as well as learn how to improvise different dance genres. Essentially, I thought I was going to learn how to improvise for the point of being showy and performing. Of course, through this course, I realized that yes one can improvise for the point of performance, but in this class, we did so much more than just do showy improvisations. Instead, I got the chance to really explore my natural self as a dancer and learn the science behind improvisation. Writing about improvisation is such a hard thing to do because improvisation is such a complex and emotionally deep activity to participate in. • 37. How Carlos Blasis And Arthur Mitchell's Role In The... Carlos Blasis and Arthur Mitchell, two brilliant dancers, masters, and teachers in their own rights, played a vital role in the evolution of ballet. Blasis, who was born in 1797's Italy, used his strong mind and understanding of the craft to construct and raise the bar of ballet techniques worldwide. Mitchell, an African American born in 1934's Harlem, spent his whole career breaking stereotypical barriers on the presence of black people in ballet. Their Ballet Tree Growing up, Carlos Blasis studied in Bordeaux, France under Jean Dauberval (an alias for Jean Bercher). Dauberval, famous for his comedy ballet, studied under French ballet master, Jean– Georges Noverre. Noverre created and pioneered "ballet d'action" which is a movement of transferring the emotions originally conveyed from the costumes, scenery, and props to the emotions of a dancer's body and facial expression. At this point the focus, in Noverre's eyes, were too much on the technical precision than the actual dance itself. (Crain, 2010) Noverre influenced Blasis as he too was praised for his expressiveness as a professional dancer (Cohen, 1998). For Arthur Mitchell, ballet wasn't his first choice in the style of dance. A guidance counselor convinced the young Mitchell to audition for the High School of the Arts where he was more interested in Modern dance. Besides having the same beliefs behind the role the core plays, their individual contemporary styles are different. Graham believed contemporary was developed through the breath in conjunction to the movement of the diaphragm. In her theory, each step held its own sense of gravity, but each breath contained the contraction and release to stop the submission to the body's natural, earthly pull. On the contrary, Humphrey believed that, along with the core, plies were the base of her technique, allowing herself to regularly fall before she recovered, and relying on her breathing rhythm, and body's natural instincts and movements. In Humphrey's choreographed piece, "Air for the G String", her dancers were seen to be walking in circles, showing her famous "fall and recovery" technique by combining the use of their demi–pointe and isolating their torso to incline over the trunk of their body. Both Humphrey and Graham started off with ballet, which they still used as the foundation of their original contemporary technique, including alignment, turnout, posture, toe pointing, keeping their shoulders down, and engaging their core, but quickly rebelled even further away, deeper into the profound ... The curriculum forms the basis for building skills in critical thinking by providing guidelines to examine the reasons behind dancers' actions, analyzing responses to learned lessons and performance done or attended (Koff, 1). The lessons provided through curriculum should enable dancers to interpret choreographers' intent. There is someone else to be aware of and need to be able to support. There is risk in how close you are to the other person but the movements that come from dance partnering such as lifts, manipulations, counterbalances also allow the person to feel risk as well. Instead of hesitating when presented a challenging moment in partnering or a riskier movement, fully taking in the risk for what it is, is a way to achieve flow. When we accept the risk we are able to reach the pleasurable experience the body produces when it reaches the adrenaline rush when presented with a high risk situation but then realizes it does not need to be in full fight or flight response. The occurrence of taking chances and trying something outside of the comfort zone is when you can explore new movement and break out of the comfortable habits (Urmston and Hewison 221). Risk and flow are a symbiotic relationship in terms of contact improvisation and in life as well. The authors break the concept of flow into nine different dimensions. One that really connects with me is receiving unambiguous feedback. This is the idea to listen to your partner and interpret the information he or she is giving you through their body and weight relationship. Another dimensions that jumped out of me is concentration. This is the idea of being in the moment and ignoring outside, competing thoughts in your life, especially if they are negative (Urmoston and Hewison 222). I found when I stopped judging myself when I danced, I was able to become a more effectively listener for my partner. Also, slowing our movement down sometimes aided me in being able to know what information my partner is providing me and how I can respond. This helped enhance the flow between both of us. • 49. Analysis Of Rudolf Laban's Theory Of Dance Born in Austro–Hungary in 1879, Rudolf Laban developed a theory that provided a means to exploring and expanding one's movement vocabulary. Although frequently used in choreographic processes, this toolset helps one explore different aspects of dance improvisation. Worldwide, his theory of analyzing movement has helped dancers grow more creative in their improvisation. When improvising, dancers often use varying levels of structure to control the direction of improvisation, and this particular structure based in Europe is used in almost every setting of dance in academia. Much of our exploration of dance improvisation involved delving into the eight movement "efforts" that Rudolf Laban developed, and these eight effort qualities can be categorized into four different groups: direction, weight, speed, and flow. For direction, movements can either be direct, which means there is intention and thought before every movement, or indirect, where the direction of one movement does not necessarily correspond to that of the next. For weight, movements can be either heavy, which can often be visible or the weight of the limbs and the awareness of gravity and the floor, or light, where a sensation of weightlessness or floating is often used. For speed, movements can either be quick, where movements rapidly progress from one to the next, or slow, where the urgency of time is neglected. For flow, movements can be either bound, where there is a sense of an imaginary outside force acting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Well, in the year 1518, some people started to take that literally. I've always been a fan of things that nobody could explain. I think it's incredible that with all of the advancements in technology and science, there's still things that have happened that make people scratch their heads and go, "huh?" When writing this speech, I considered several different possibilities, the Bermuda Triangle, Amelia Earhart, but I finally settled on this. This particular unexplained incident happened, as I said, in the year 1518. Today, I plan to explain to you guys what the Dancing Plague was, similar instances and effects, and what could have possibly caused it. First, let me give you the background. In the year 1518 a single woman suddenly began dancing in the streets of Strasbourg, France. There was no music playing at the time to prompt her to start dancing and evidently, she seemed upset to be dancing. By the end of a week, somewhere between thirty and forty people had started to dance with her. Within a month, more than 400 people were dancing, without stopping. For whatever reason, the authorities and leaders of the town seemed to think that the best way to stop the dancing was to keep people dancing. It makes no sense to me, but I guess they figured they would dance it out of their system. They built a stage for them to dance on, got professional dancers to dance with ... As a little girl, I sparkled with admiration and was inspired to be all she was, it was from that point on, that I ventured into an unknown world of art, strength and expression. Now being eighteen years old with about fourteen years of experience in the dance world, I have learned and developed the norms, values and practices of the culture, and the conflicting theory within it. Subcultures are "A set of distinctive values, norms, and practices within a larger culture." (Brym and Lie 2012: 47). To compare, dancers value competition as a way to strive for the winning spot; if they fail to do so, they believe they have destroyed all they have worked for. In spite of that, sports have set numerous norms with in the culture, norms are defined as certain types of 'standards' which were created for the players to avid by as guidelines to how they should act, or react in certain situations. It is a form of theatrical dance, known for its continual fusion of non–western style and ideas, which allows for a fresh source of movement inspiration. Choreographers rejected what they classified as the inflexible and imperialistic nature of ballet, and in order to be taken seriously as artists rather than simple entertainers they created a new art form. Artists Loie Fuller, Isadora Duncan, and Ruth St. Denis are considered to be the pioneers of modern dance in America. Dance is a social institution, recognized as being an important function in civilized life. The following essay will focus on the theory and work of artist Isadora Duncan, while incorporating lecture notes and articles of both authors Sally Bane and Ann Daly to explain the historical situations that culminated in the development of early modern dance. Arising from the 20th century modern dance was a form of cultural collaboration and exploration, as well as a resistance to colonial repression. Modern dance allowed for the experimentation of the new as well as a freer form of dance movement. • 63. Isadora Duncan: Pioneer of Modern Dance "Movements are as eloquent as words." (Duncan, 440) Mid nineteenth centuries was a period of rigid and standardized ballet which tortured and restrained their body and mind. Against that society's convention, there was a woman who tried to communicate with people through her dance. She, Isadora Duncan, was a pioneer of the modern dance, and her dance embraced her sophisticated ideals. Even though the public remember her only with the complicated and scandalous rumors about her lovers and dramatic death by scarf, Isadora Duncan's new style of dance which led a new paradigm reflected freedom–not only for herself but also for the society. Purely, she extricated people to the freedom by directly expressing her soul by her movements. Duncan expressed her emotion through her free movements in her dance. Unlike other dancers in that time, she valued the "connection between her own thought and feelings" not physical skills in her art, as Naranjo states. (Naranjo, 1) Isadora Duncan said, "These ugly and false positions in no way express that state of unconscious Dionysiac delirium which is necessary to the dancer. Compare and Contrast of Classical Ballet and Modern Dance Dance is one of the most beautiful, expressive forms of art known to mankind. It expresses joy, love, sorrow, anger, and the list truly goes on for all the possible emotions that it can convey. Dance not only can express how one feels, but it can tell a story or even be used to praise a higher power. Dance has intricately played an important role to every culture over the course of time. Two forms of dance that have not only stood against the test of time but have influenced the development of other various styles of dance is none other than Classical Ballet and Modern Dance. Classical Ballet is the epitome of class and sophistication, it is known for its meticulous techniques ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Petipa's production of Swan Lake is a beautiful example of the structure movements that dancers must perform; in the clip titled Odile entrance & Black Swan pas de deux, you see "The Black Swan" perfect posture and balance, dancing on en Pointe all the while managing to gracefully seduce the prince through her seductive movements and entrancing expressions. In contrast Modern dance focus is on the dancer expressing their inner most emotions and feelings through free flowing movements. The modern dancer uses their whole body more naturally and fluidly to convey what their current emotional state is, unlike classical ballet where the ballerina at all times keeps an upright posture, and performs with structured, angular lines. Martha Graham's "Frontier" is a great example of the free movements of Modern dance; In this performance Martha Graham uses her whole body to move to the rhythmic sounds of the drums and music, you can clearly see that there is no confined structure in this performance, she is completely moving organically to how she is feeling and what she is trying to convey through her movements. Classical ballet took a step forward and revived prominent roles for men; whom previously the Romantic era had solely focused on the art of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Observation Dancers And The Classroom For this observation dancers were observed from the classroom to the stage. I participated in the dance class and watched from aside on stage. This was specifically this weekI focused on the language and communication between the dancers and dance teachers/professors based on their interactions or lack there of. This was done in the dance room and in the theater, which have different affects on the dancers. Dance, defined as moving rhythmically to music and typically following a set sequence of steps, is a a social phenomenon that has principles of symbolic interaction theory seen through language and communication. Symbolic interaction is seen through the location– stage, room, not dancing– and verbal language, which includes movement, technique, and rhythm. This interaction is also seen in the specific communication, either positive or negative, with the amount of intimacy and knowledge. All this connects to one another to create a symbol among dance and dancers to interact. Body language varies between the places dancers are either in the dance room, the stage, or not in dance by any means. In the dance room there is a certain etiquette to embody, which is a positive attitude and a time to learn. Before stage or a performance a serious aspect is seen and their is supposed to be a positive tension. During the stage performance the etiquette is to remain calm and do what was practiced. When dancers are not in a dancing environment there a whole different persona ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Late Adulthood Research Paper Reflection of Late Adulthood For this paper, I had the privilege of interviewing one of my friend's grandmother. Her name is Jamie Hansen and she is a healthy and active 68–year–old grandmother. In the beginning of the phone call, I asked some basic background knowledge questions such as how many grandkids she has and if she was a widower or not. I found out that she and her husband are happily married and that she has six grandchildren. As I got to know her more I started asking questions that pertained to the interview aspect of social theories. I figured out that Mrs. Hansen's responses led to an application of the continuity and socioemotional selective theories. The continuity theory has a correlation to Mrs. Hansen's late adulthood and can be defined when "...aging adults strive to maintain a personal system...that promotes life satisfaction by ensuring consistency their past and anticipated future" (Berk 615). In order for me to come to the reflection that Mrs. Hansen portrays the continuity theory, I asked what her interests were and what she use to do at a younger age versus what she is involved in today. She shared with me that she used to be a part of a dance group in her late 20's to mid–30's and now that she has free time she says that she attends her young seven–year– old ... I posed this as my last question because of Erik Erikson's last developmental stage, ego integrity versus despair. Mrs. Hansen response gave off was that she had a fulfilling with many achievements and that now she enjoys being retired. However, she did mention that everyone always wished they changed something in the past. From this interview, I have learned a lot about different relationships when you're aged and how the older generation conceptualizes ideas. • 73. Summary Of My Papa's Waltz The Waltz in a Ballroom of my Memory A waltz is a beautiful dance done between two partners in 3–4ths time; a magical dance done rhythmically around a ballroom. Cinderella and her prince did it; Belle and the Beast did it. Now we see that Theodore Roethke and his father have done it. While the subject of "My Papa's Waltz" has spurred passionate academic debates from professors, scholars, and students alike, the imagery, syntax, and diction of the poem clearly supports the interpretation that Theodore Roethke wrote "My Papa's Waltz" as a reflection on the short childhood memories he had with his father. Indeed, the theory that the author's father was abusive, is agreeable to a point, I cannot accept the overall conclusion that the whole poem was written as a reflection on the author's abuse from his father. "The hand that held my wrist[, w]as battered on one knuckle," Roethke states in stanza 3. Though one can see how the two lines can be taken as if the father was firmly grasping the child's wrist, while at the same time, others see it as a father gently holding ... Although many can argue that this poem is entirely based on the abuse his father brought upon Roethke, Many others believe that this poem is a reflection of his childhood memories, which the author remembers fondly. Not only had Roethke's father died when he was a teenager, but his uncle, to which he was very close to, committed suicide. Considering he was surrounded by a dense cloud of death, It is obvious that the poem is about fond memories Roethke remembers about his father many years ago. Roethke didn't have the best relationship with his father, there were some ups and downs, to which we can all relate to. However, he loved his father more than anything, which is just as lovely of a thought as a waltz is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Criticism Of Marie Salole In the early eighteenth century, men held a significant role at the court and in the repertory theatres in Paris and London. The management structure in the Opera was very strict. It was not permitted for public reform and all male–group were not allowed to change. The state–appointed Academie Royale de Danse controlled the development of dance. During that period, men created the dance choreographies, dance music, and writings on dance; while women interpret the choreographies created by men. As Christine Battersby mentioned in her theory that women were excluded from the definitions of creative genius from male writers. However, Marie Sallé broke through this tradition – she was the first female dancer who created her own choreographies in the opera houses of London and Paris. Many have suggested that she was a talented performer. Nevertheless, her unusual behaviour on stage was unacceptable in the early period. Therefore, she received many negative criticism and scandals in her life. Marie Sallé was born in France in 1707. She was a prominent and influential dancer, teacher, and choreographer in the early 18th century. The impression she gave to the audience was her virtue image. In Roman times, females who were vestal virgins got exempt from guardianship. It indicates that people believed that she was an independent women. Her first public performance was at London's Lincoln's Inn Fields with her brother Fancis in 1716. She performed Kellom Tomlinson's "The Submission ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay On Eed 200 Foundations Of Early Childhood Education EED 200 Foundations of Early Childhood Education Outside field experience –required 30 hours per MCCCD Impression of the Adults (1pt) What do you see as the adult strengths? Was the adult encouraging independence, child self– direction? How was a child or children being valued, appreciated, or encouraged by the adult? For this particular activity, I planned a music session with the children in order to provide them the opportunity to play various instruments and sing along with the songs. I placed the basket full of musical instruments in the middle of the circle of children and put on a CD's of children songs and encouraged the children to pick one to play with. Everyone eagerly grabbed their favorite instrument and began playing along with the music. As, we have listened to this CD before, they were quickly singing and dancing along with the music. The theory I recognize in this activity is the Emilia Reggio belief that children should have control over their learning. While I had planned a musical activity with the children, they guided their learning experience in a different direction. Not only did the children have control over their learning environment, they also were able to learn through movement which is also an Emilia Reggio theory. I noticed this theory in practice as the children became increasingly interested in moving and dancing, as opposed to, playing the instruments. When the youngest girl asked if she could dress up as a ballerina I took this as an opportunity for them to enhance their experience with make believe. Additionally, while they were dancing, each child was free to move around independently or to follow along with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
