Holmes’ Method of Madness
A detail is defined as an individual feature, fact, or item, in The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes and John
Watson have to use details to investigate the curse of the Baskervilles. Detectives Sherlock Holmes and Watson have an amazing attention to detail,
however, sometimes they struggle with what is important; Holmes and Watson have to decide what is pertinent information, keep their minds on
track, and be able to do both of those in order to solve the Baskerville case. To begin, detectives need evidence to piece together a crime, but
determining what is evidence and what's not is the most difficult part of solving a case. There is a method, however, for figuring out whether a clue
may be used in the case or not. This method is part of Holmes method, the scientific method, where the investigation follows the process of: observing,
speculating, deducting and making inferences about the crime. During the step of observing, every detail is taken in, even the most irrelevant details,
which allow the investigators to make sure that they have all the information needed to solve their case. Next comes the hardest part, a clump of the
last three steps, involving the process of analyzing every single detail a case has, speculating its place in the case and deducting the information if it
doesn't fit to the speculated case. Eventually, those logical speculations that fit the case are formed into inferences, which are used to investigate the case

Literary Elements Of Sherlock Holmes
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle utilizes many detail–oriented literary elements to develop the many adventures of the famous fictional British detective
Sherlock Holmes and his partner, John Watson. Long winded description and complex vocabulary are infused into Doyle's writing to accentuate
Holmes's great intelligence. By incorporating such a heavy, educated tone upon the mysteries, the tales of Sherlock Holmes are expressed as very
complicated stories that challenge readers in comprehension as well as encourage curiosity through puzzling cases. One of the most important literary
features of Doyle's works is the use of dialogue and conversations held between characters, whether it be Holmes, Watson, a victim, and so forth. It
seems that a key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another factor to consider is how Holmes is written to be asking Watson even though he understands that Watson is not on the same page. This curious
occurrence in the interactions between Holmes and Watson may also elevate the status Holmes imposes on the text and to the readers.
Not only can the dialogue bring life to the story, but it can tell the story itself, as seen in many instances in which Holmes has wrapped up another
mystery. Most cases are concluded with a recollection of events and revealing hints that only Holmes knew of, presented almost conversationally from
Holmes to Watson. With his first–person account of the mystery, Doyle uses Holmes to clarify any remaining confusion or questions that linger in
readers' minds as the chapter ends. While it is repetitive after several cases, granting Holmes with such large chunks of dialogue eliminates the need for
boring, lengthy straight–forward narration. A good example of the use of retelling in dialogue in place for narration can be found in The Red–Headed
League. A combination of complex writing and sophisticated vocabulary also follow the genius detectives' mysteries and help to represent his
intelligence through Doyle's skillful work. Each story is written with extensive vocabulary as well as depth, which also alludes/attributes to Holmes
himself. Therefore, Doyle was careful to ensure that the professional nature of Holmes was also conveyed

Sherlock Holmes Summary
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson arrive at the hotel in London where Sir Henry is staying. They find Sir Henry very mad because another boot
was missing. He said the first boot that had been taken away had been put back, and a second old black boot was now gone. None of the hotel staff
knew anything about this. They also discussed who the person following Sir Henry could be. The only person they know at Baskerville Hall who
has a black beard is the butler, Mr. Barrymore. To figure out if Mr. Barrymore is at home, they decide to send him a telegram and to deliver it in
person. If he is not there, the telegram would be returned to the sender. Sherlock Holmes then says that Sir Henry needs a bodyguard at Baskerville
Hall. He said that Mortimer is too busy to be able to do that, and he says that he is too busy with commitments so tells everyone that Dr. Watson
will go with Sir Henry to Baskerville Hall. As they try and figure out more clues about the case, they get word that Mr. Barrymore is in Devonshire
because he was there to receive the telegram. Also, the cab driver who Sherlock Holmes had sent for earlier comes to their door. He tells Homes that
the bearded man who he had driven around claimed to be a detective. He had told them to say nothing to anyone. Strangest of all, the man had claimed
to be named "Mr. Sherlock Holmes". Holmes is very surprised and also amused.

Watson And Holmes Relationship
The Relationship Between Holmes and Watson Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have been seen as the ultimate partners for as long as they have been
in print. Their relationship is far deeper than anything that meets the eye; they mean more to each other than just a business partner or friend. Some
have seen their relationship as anything from that of best friends, to homosexual lovers, or to heterosexual lovers as seen between a male Holmes and a
female Watson. Whether these statements can be proven or not remains a facet controlled by the reader, but several other useful implications can be
drawn from their relationship. No matter what Watson and Holmes mean to each other, both men seem to follow certain trends throughout the story.

The Popularity Of Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes has been adjusted on media since long and is considered as a standout amongst the most played characters on Television Series and
on other such stages. As per Guinness World Records, Sherlock Holmes is the "most depicted motion picture character," with more than 70 performing
artists having played the sleuth in more than 200 movies. Current interpretations of the show, for example, Sherlock and Elementary, give present day
turns on the 125–year–old character, and as of late Sir Ian McKellen has reported that he will be playing a 93–year–old form of the notorious
'counseling investigator' in the 2015 film Mr. Holmes. Evidently,Sherlock Holmes is fit as a fiddle, and perhaps more prominent than he's ever been.

Numerous different movies have been comedies and satires which jab fun at Holmes, Watson, their relationship and different characters. These have
included Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes with Robert Stephens and Colin Blakely as Holmes and Watson.
More genuine, non–accepted movies were A Study in Terror (with John Neville and Donald Houston) and Murder by Decree (with Christopher
Plummer and James Mason) both of which included Holmes and Watson examining the homicides by the Whitechapel serial executioner Jack the
Ripper. Furthermore, Young Sherlock Holmes with Nicholas Rowe as Holmes andAlan Cox as Watson playing the pair as schoolboys (in this film one

The Mystery Of Sherlock Holmes
A private detective is a detective who is not a member of an official force but is employed by a private party or self–employed in his or her own
practice. The most famous mystery fictional character Sherlock Holmes is a perfect example of what a private investigator is and should be. In this
paper, I will be discussing Sherlock Holmes' life along with the several unique ways he solves his mysteries throughout his books. I will also be
comparing and contrasting him with other detectives and review the impact his stories left on others. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the British writer and
physician who created the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. He portrays Holmes so be the smartest and most effective detective in London,
England. Holmes was a character very much of his time and place, who appealed to British readers directly by confronting the messy, changeable
world they live in (Long). Most people in today's time are still fairly familiar to such a strongly created character even though his mystery stories
were written around the late 1800's and early 1900's. Doyle got his inspiration for Holmes from his professor, Joseph Bell, the famous Scottish
lecturer who taught at the medical school of University of Edinburgh. Doyle's most famous book was "The Hound of the Baskervilles", written in the
early 1900's. Which is a mystery where everyone thinks a ghostly, killer–like dog, which has haunted the Baskerville family for generations, killed Sir
Charles. This is just one of the

Sherlock Holmes Emotionally Intelligent
Sherlock Holmes has been featured in several stories by his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Traditionally, he has been highly regarded for his intellect.
Nonetheless, a multifold of readers question if Holmes has emotions. Holmes' thoughts are a mystery. Readers only know the thoughts of his friend Dr.
John Watson, who narrates the stories Holmes is in. I have reason to believe that Holmes has displayed through his actions, including through what he
says, that he indeed has emotions. At the same time, Holmes does not allow his emotions to hinder or get in the way of his work.

Holmes' daily goal is to be mentally stimulated. He says it himself in The Sign of Four that "I cannot live without brainwork" (104). This striving to
always be mentally stimulated causes Holmes to put his all into solving mysteries. However, Holmes also finds stimulation through his drug habits.
This is further explained in the article "Addiction, Empire, and Narrative in Arthur Conan Doyle's "'The Sign of the Four'" written by Christopher Keep
and Don Randall. These authors bring up that Homes' drug obsession is a hazard to Holmes' health. Dr. Watson confirms this, and Watson brings
up a good point that Holmes risks losing "great powers" he's been blessed to having (referring to his intellect). Keep and Randall say that "the drug
is both remedy and poison," just as Watson admits the drug can make Holmes feel good, but it has negative health effects (Keep and Randall 211,
Doyle 99, 100). The cocaine that Holmes uses, according to Randall and Keep, was originally created as an anesthesia to soothe the pain of surgery. It
is ironic, therefore, that something created to help people has been abused by Holmes, and is still abused to this

Sherlock Holmes, utilizing his meticulous observation, keen intuition and rigid reasoning, earned his household name by solving countless cases in
detective novels and on the big screen. Yet few people realize that doctors, alike Sherlock in real life, are constantly solving health–related cases to

I'd bought a gun". Instead of just saying that he bought a sword he needs to say that he is good with the sword. You can clearly tell that Watson is

One of those is that Holmes uses mobile phones to solve crimes. For example, in the first episode he uses his phone to look up in which areas

else than his own mind and the science of deduction. I absolutely love BBC modern take (has started watching lots of episodes), one of the main
reasons is that they include a humorous. They include some smaller jokes here and there, which I believe was a right decision. In the book there are

The Substance Of Sherlock Holmes
There's is arguably nothing worse in life than boredom. If given a chance to alleviate the mundanity of our everyday lives we would all gladly take
it. Well, luckily there is or has been a remedy for boredom. Some people (the fans) have argued that the cure for our insufferable and bland lives has
been on screen since 2010. And it's name is Sherlock. The tv show brought to us by the BBC has become a cult phenomenon since it hit our screens in
the early 2010s. But why? What's so great about a tv show starring two British guys? Well the answer is simple, complexity. The substance in Sherlock
whose synopsis is about a "consulting detective" named Sherlock Holmes who solves crimes along with his sidekick John Watson is unbelievable. In a
book entitled Signs of Life in the USA, there are two writers Seger and Ray; both of whom discuss common Hollywood tools used to make films
popular. In an article, published by Linda Seger entitled, Creating a Myth, she talks about the many tropes Hollywood or cinema in general uses relate
to its audience. One of the most famous and popular methods she points out as being that of the "Hero Myth." In it's most simplistic form the "Hero
Myth" is about an unwilling character seeking and finding adventure all the while being transformed. If we go back to the tv show Sherlock it contains
specific parts of the "Hero Myth." However, it also contains much more. According to Ray, in his article entitled The Thematic Paradigm, the type of

While the reasons for Sherlock Holmes popularity in the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth are comprehensible enough in the light
of the abovementioned facts, the explanation for Sherlock`s continuing success requires a more detailed analysis. Many characters that were popular at
the time of their creation are forgotten today; at the same time some images developed hundreds of years ago are still famous and have become iconic
in modern culture. Such characters as Batman, Robin Hood, Harry Potter, Hobbits, and definitely Sherlock Holmes are the obvious examples of such
phenomena of popularity.

possible symptoms vary from Asperger's Syndrome and autism to Bi–polar disorder and schizophrenia (Kalogjera–Sackellares 96–98). The question

Holmes Vs Moriarty
Sherlock Holmes has been a prevalent character in popular culture since his creation. Recently he has been revived in such adaptations as the
Sherlock Holmes movie series, Elementary on CBS, and BBC's Sherlock. The iconic detective, followed closely behind by his companion John
Watson, solves crimes just in the nick of time leaving us breathless from suspense and awed by his deductions. With Holmes portraying the
proverbial white knight there must be an opposing force for him to triumph against. The notorious and nefarious James Moriarty is this opposing
force. He is described as a spider in the center of a web, controlling everything but staying hidden in the shadows. In the BBC's adaptation of these
classic tales they portray Holmes and Moriarty as opposites when in all actuality they are more like two sides to the same coin. Holmes likes to
solve crime. Likes to fix things for people. Moriarty does the same just in a more criminal sense and they both do it for the same reason. Boredom.
Both the detective and the criminal mastermind complain about being bored and the boring people that surround them. They both search for someone
as clever as they are to keep their minds occupied. And in "The Great Game" Sherlock Holmes meets James Moriarty. The way BBC portrays James
Moriarty differs from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Holmes And Watson's Dichotomy
A common trope seen in the detective genre is the dichotomy between the detective and their companion. While the detective normally serves as the
primary character and voice of reason within the novel, their companion acts as a contrasting character and is often the story's narrator. Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet redefines the necessity of a companion for the detective. In analyzing the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and
Dr. John Watson, it is evident that their relationship is mutually beneficial. Although Doyle highlights the differences between the two men, he also
demonstrates the important role that each man plays in the other's life. Sherlock serves as a companion and motivation for John, while he assists

The novel begins with a description of his near–death experiences and subsequent arrival in London. Lonely and weakened from his time in
Afghanistan, Watson is eager for companionship and finds it in Sherlock Holmes. Living with Holmes provides him with something to focus on, as he
tells the reader "this man stimulated my curiosity, and how often I endeavored to break through the reticence which he showed on all that concerned
himself," (Doyle 16). His friendship with Sherlock not only gives him companionship, but it also provides a sense of purpose when he invites Watson
to the crime scene of Enoch Drebber.
Watson and Sherlock's reaction to the murder are drastically different. While Sherlock is described as hearing the news the crime scene calmly,
Watson cries "Why this is terrible," (26). While Sherlock looks at the crime objectively, Watson provides the emotional response. Watson's emotional
response drives him to help Sherlock with the case, as he realizes that "justice must be done, and that the depravity of the victim was no condonement
in the eyes of the law," (43). John's emotional response balances out Sherlock's calm, business–like approach and together, the two of them create a

Stalin And Holmes Essay
The acclaimed authors, Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle, formulate the characters of Auguste Dupin and Sherlock Holmes respectively, to be
similar in the way they analyze, deduce, and connect segments of often–thought "unsolvable" cases. Through their comparable techniques and system
of deduction, Dupin and Holmes never fail to trace back evidence to the scene of the crime. However, due to vast differences between the authors'
writing styles, the audience observes the main characters as distinct individuals, ultimately reinforcing the notion that Dupin and Holmes are not clones,
but rather characters from different backgrounds that evolve to epitomize heroic private detectives. The ability to arrive to conclusions through careful
analysis of the obvious and the hidden, is a trait not present in many figures. Dupin and Holmes are akin to one another in the way that they... Show

The Characters Of Sherlock Holmes
"It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts." (Arthur
Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes) This is one of the many lines in Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes Mysteries. Conan Doyle, born in May of
1859, published the first Sherlock Holmes mystery, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887. When he died in July of 1930 there were 4 novels as well as 56 short
stories that featured Holmes. Even though some of the plots throughout the series are unrealistic many of the cultural details are real. Doyle describes
London in a great amount of detail, including the smog that fell upon the city. For example, some of the locations Doyle writes about are in fact real
places; some of the characters are based off people he knew in his life, and throughout the novels and stories there are many weapons and ammo that
were actually used in the nineteenth century.
Inspiration for the Characters
Conan Doyle was attending medical school at the University of Edinburgh when he met Dr. Joseph Bell, his professor. Bell was a lecturer and an
excellent surgeon. He wrote many scientific books and was even Queen Victoria's personal surgeon whenever she came to Scotland. However, what
made Bell so amazing was his ability to connect with his patients. He would astonish his students by being able to determine a patient's occupation and
other personal details simply by observing them. After Sir Doyle graduated medical

Holmes 's Unbelievable Flaws : Holmes
Holmes's Unbelievable flaws Holmes is a very complex and moody character who, although of strict habit, is considerably messy. Holmes appears to
undergo periods of obsession and depression, the latter of which are accompanied by violin playing, and cocaine use. All of Conan Doyle's stories are
told from Watson's first–person perspective, and yet, Holmes flaws are not criticized but glamourized. While Holmes is a clever and observant man,
his flaws are very clear to people around him. Holmes takes considerable pride in his ability and his ego is clearly evident to those around him;
also, his impatience with those of lesser intelligence than his makes it trying to others who are with him. On the 20th of March, 1888 in "A
scandal in Bohemia," Watson and Holmes are arguing in 221 Baker Street. Watson and Holmes argue, "Then, how do you know?" "I see it, I
deduce it. How do I know that you have been getting yourself very wet lately, and that you have a most clumsy and careless servant girl?" "My
dear Holmes," said I, "this is too much. You would certainly have been burned had you lived a few centuries ago. It is true that I had a country walk
on Thursday and came home in a dreadful mess, but as I have changed my clothes I can 't imagine how you deduce it" (Scandal). "Burned"? Watson
appears to have just called his best friend Holmes a witch. But his point is actually that Holmes 's thought processes are so beyond an ordinary person

quote, "Holmes struck his hand passionately upon the rock in front of us stamped his feet in impatience,"(Doyle, 1902, Pg.) In the quote we see
Sherlock unable to cope with waiting. Instead of acting normally Sherlock decides to injure himself as he can't cope with his boredom of waiting.
This is a perfect example of Sherlock's known personality of being unable to be bored or wait. Another thing Sherlock is internationally notable for is
his love for a challenge of someone intelligent. This excitement Sherlock has is seen in many of the Sherlock Holmes novels and an example of this is
James Moriarty. We see this excitement in the quote,'The cunning rascal... I tell you, Watson, this time we have got a foeman who is worthy of our

this as most regular heros see a challenging opponent as bad thing, while Sherlock sees it as fun. Sherlock is also acknowledged for his partner and
friend Dr. Watson who is the narrator of most of the Sherlock novels. Throughout The Hounds of the Baskervilles we see Sherlock and Watson
together. We see the dynamic relationship of Sherlock and Watson in the quote,"I am afraid, my dear Watson, that most of your conclusions were
erroneous. When I said that you stimulated me I meant, to be frank, that in noting your fallacies I was occasionally guided towards the truth. Not that
you are entirely wrong in this instance."(Doyle, 1902, Pg. ). Just like in the legend of Sherlock Holmes we see Sherlock trying to appreciate Watson,

Holmes Versus Spencer
Sherlock Versus Spencer: Who's the Best? Sherlock Holmes is one of the greatest fictional detectives, but how does he compare to an always–right
Shawn Spencer. Holmes, from The Hound of the Baskervilles, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is a household name. He has appeared in many books, TV
shows, and movies. Shawn Spencer is a detective from the TV series Psych. He works for the Santa Barbara Police Department and has never failed to
catch a culprit. Through Holmes' standouts, Shawn's differences, and the twos' similarities, the question is: who's better? Sherlock Holmes is a work of
art, he cannot be copied. Holmes is always very serious as he needs to get his job done. In The Hound Of the Baskervilles, Holmes interrogates Dr.
Mortimer, one of his clients, "And you, a trained man of science believe it to be supernatural?" (Doyle 31). Also, Holmes is very deliberate in the
way he thinks. He is able to see a small detail and process it into his method almost immediately. Lastly, Holmes is always a detective and is certain he

Both Holmes and Shawn have a keen sense of eyesight. Holmes can see through disguises and images to the culprit. Shawn can see the most miniscule
detail, like a brochure, to figure out where the culprit is. Each of them have a "sidekick" with them. Holmes has Watson, his detail–finding partner.
Shawn has Gus, a person who doesn't want to be there, but is. Finally, both are known to stray from the group and do their own thing. Holmes, in
The Hound of the Baskervilles, went away for half the book, only to come back with definite answers. Shawn disobeys all the rules and ends up with
a dead body or with a culprit.
Although Shawn and Holmes are very different, they are very much the same. They both have the detective features that matter, and more. They both
have a good process, a good partner, and even good emotional status. If one were chosen to be better, the decision could not be

Sherlock using the art of deduction can be commonly found within his stories. Weather he is solving the murder mystery of the century, of figuring
out what Dr. Watson had for breakfast, he is constantly using it. Though deduction is a big part of his investigative process, Sherlock doesn't only
use his mind. The Sherlock from Sherlock has access to much more resources such as DNA testing, super powerful microscopes, and access to all
sorts of substances, than the sherlock from the original novels, and only for one reason. Sherlock takes place in modern day whereas the original
novels were written and take place in the 1800s. For that reason, the sherlock from the show can use different techniques for solving crimes than the

Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is able to identify who the culprit is throughout the short stories and the films that we watched in class. Both of
these movies, Sherlock Holmes and The Great Mouse Detective, have antagonists that are represented in different ways.
In the movie Sherlock Holmes the villain is named Blackwood and in The Great Mouse Detective the villain is Professor Ratigan. In all of the Sir

I. Pathological behavior characteristics: H.H. Holmes' pathological problems started at the age of eight with him starting to lie. His lies and scams
grew along with his age and by the age of 25 he changed his name to H.H. Holmes to elude accusations from those he lied to and scammed. He
continued to con and manipulate using his trusting looks and medical degree swindling thousands of dollars from insurance companies by taking
cadavers from medical school, taking insurance policies out on them and telling the insurance that he was a family member to collect the money.
Holmes was such a pathological liar and has given so many accounts about the number of people he has killed that to this day the true number is
unknown. He always needed stimulation and a proneness to boredom, and was conning and very manipulative. He had numerous wives and had
promiscuous sexual behavior by having several mistresses.
J. Geographic Profiling: Holmes was considered to be a geographically transient serial killer. He moved from state to state killing in almost each one.

Sherlock Holmes
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes is one of the most easily recognizable characters in detective stories. He has many remarkable traits that
other fictional detectives do not. Some examples of this are his observational abilities, his dual personality, and his being a skilled musician and
composer. The first example of Holmes' exquisite trademarks is his ability to see things that other people cannot. He uses his powers of observation to
solve cases. For example, in "The Red–Headed League" Holmes notes that Mr. Jabez Wilson "has at some time done manual labor... that he is a
Freemason, that he has been in China..." To explain his reasoning, he says "Your right hand is quite a size larger than your left... the muscles are more
developed... rather against the strict rules of your order, you use an arc–and–compass breastpin...the fish that you have tattooed immediately above
your right wrist could only have been done in China." The fact that these observations are so obvious to Holmes, whilst being unnoticed by Watson and
Wilson, make his observational skills something that stands out from other fictional detectives of the time. He uses these skills throughout his cases to
his advantage with great success.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Holmes Vs Watson
A Study in Scarlet is a murder mystery novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1886. The novel launched two iconic characters into the literary
world, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson that would come to be known and loved by many generations. Sherlock Holmes is a very
strange man. He is a detective who can solve a mystery a trace of evidence although he believes that murder cases turn out to have very complex
ways of happening. He does not believe in the solar system because he thought it was irrelevant to his career. His decision to take on his first case in
a Conan Doyle novel was a just decision because he was uniquely positioned to solve it. Holmes seems to always stick with his beliefs, no matter the
situation, even after the case seemed like it was solved.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He made a bold and risky move in accusing the taxi driver, Jefferson Hope, of murder based on a strong hunch that was later substantiated by
evidence. The narrator explains how, "...with an inarticulate roar of fury he hurled himself through the window," (Conan Doyle 138). This hurling
endangered everyone and could have been fatal if the glass struck anybody. This was a calculated choice that enabled him to solve the case
quickly, but could have endangered others in the process. Holmes' motivation is the fact the he knew the case was easily solvable, and he could be
one of high expertise at his position as a detective. The narrator explains his accusation when he says, "Let me introduce you to Mr. Jefferson Hope,
the murderer of Enoch Drebber and of Joseph Strangerson," (Conan Doyle 138). Holmes does this in his provocative way which is both a pro and a
con. He knows intuitively that what he is doing will help the case along, but his cowboy approach makes it difficult for him to cooperate with fellow

an explanation for the mysterious events that place in the book. Assumptions can be made that many "guesses" will be made throughout the book

asking a rhetorical question. When he gets back from his club, the detectives gives some advice. Holmes says that some answers are right in front of

Henry addresses Watson this way , it gives latter the rare opportunity to play the head detective. Watson's means of attempting to answer questions like
this provides a layout to Holmes's method. "I knew that seclusion and solitude were very necessary for my friend in those hours of intense mental
conception during which he weighed every particle of evidence, constructed alternative theories, balanced one against the other , and made up his mind
as to which points were essential and which immaterials. " – Watson explains one of Holmes's method. Throughout the book Watson is always left out
of the problem–solving. Watson supports Holmes as a detective and completely defends Holmes and reflects the quality that Holmes makes use of

Holmes Good Vs Evil
The quote captures the constant contrast between good and evil. Holmes is a vicious man and will use anyone to obtain whatever objective is set into
motion. It analyzes Holmes development in the dark and light, he is presented as both and does not abide to one specific element. Holmes presents
himself to everyone he meets as charismatic. Disarming their guards to achieve something; benefit from them in some shape or form. He uses these
traits to obtain something whether the act be good or evil; they cannot portray the true meaning of his actions. In certain cases his charm is used to
present purity in the action, but deep down reveal a sinister act. "Belknap still did not like Holmes, but he found his candor sufficiently
disarming"(Larson 87). Holmes contains many different traits to his personality, mostly good and evil depicted through his actions in the novel. In
parallel to his varying personality, other characters also hold many uncertain feelings towards Holmes, due to his attitude differences from person to
person. The general understanding of Holmes is complex for characters that have confronted him, which in turn is complex... Show more content on

In all stories there are characters that make it worthwhile. Sherlock Holmes is a witty, yet arrogant young man. He solves crime in a short amount of
time, with the help of his partner Dr. Watson. He boasts about his intelligence and acts like he is better than most people. Dr.Watson on the other hand
is a feeble and polite man. He was a military doctor, who got injured, and is usually uplifting Sherlock. These two characters are very different, but
share many of the same qualities like being unsociable, zealous, pompous, and fortitudinous. Given these points, Holmes and Watson's similarities and

Sherlock Holmes Reasoning
"The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes." The world changes and new cases appear every day like in the
novel series of the The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Many readers have been very much interested in Doyle's stories and how he has fabricated
Sherlock's form of reasoning or understanding in cases. These people have created many films depicting Doyle's stories. In some films such as The
Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, the story line is the same as Doyle's original but some names and characters have been changed. In the
films, The Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, the story proceeds the same as a detective solving a seemingly impossible case. In
Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock uses his deductive reasoning to solve a case that has been brought up that no one knows how to solve. The same follows
in The Great Mouse Detective as Basil has a case brought to him about a missing father. The difference between the two though is that Sherlock in
Sherlock Holmes does proceed his cases sometimes with much rudeness or is willing to fight his way, physically, through any of his problems.... Show

In The Great Mouse Detective, Basil of Baker Street is the lead detective that uses the help of an assistant named Dawson to solve a mystery. In
this same way Sherlock in Sherlock Holmes is also a detective that uses the help of an assistant named Watson to solve cases. The difference
however is not the same characters are pulled from the stories. For example, in The Great Mouse Detective the peg legged man makes an
appearance, but in Sherlock Holmes he does not. The opposite is for Irene Adler, she is in Sherlock Holmes, but not The Great Mouse Detective. The
characters in both stories are idealized from the original story of Sherlock Holmes but are made to be different because of the audience the characters

Sherlock Holmes Literary Analysis
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle utilizes literary elements such as dialogue, tone, vocabulary, a different format of narration and perspective, along with
chronology to construct the adventures of the eminent fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and his partner, Dr. John Watson. The creative use of
dialogue assists in telling the story fluently and vividly, while a suspenseful and occasionally humorous tone maintains interest from case to case. Long
winded descriptions and complex vocabulary are infused into Doyle's writing to fit his knowledgeable characters as well as fuse them into the setting
of traditional Britain. Lastly, these features are accompanied by both Holmes and Watson's different perspectives alongside each other. the tales of

This excerpt alone can describe the relationship between the detective and his partner, separating Holmes from Watson by interpreting how he
observes and infers upon the scene of the crime versus Watson, who is intelligent nonetheless but not as keen as Holmes in identifying such specific
details. In terms of this discussion, it can be assumed that Doyle may have intended to use this dialogue to play out the scene in a dynamic way to
show the difference between the two. Here, Holmes carries most of the conversation while Watson listens and struggles to follow Holmes's
complicated thinking. Another factor to consider is how Holmes asks Watson many rhetorical questions. This aspect of their interactions compares
their sense of understanding as well, suggesting that Holmes has a habit of asking these questions to explain his observations to Watson. In relation to
dialogue and narration, Watson's style of storytelling is more straightforward and adopts a suspenseful tone that suits the mystery genre well. Since
Watson tends to only see things as they are, there are more blind spots in his sight compared to Holmes. Because he is more visual and tends to
impart very little of his own style, it makes readers anxious to discover what Watson will encounter next and what Holmes will reveal. The
Red–Headed League is a good case in point, in which Watson writes, "What a time it seemed! From comparing notes afterwards it was but an hour and
a quarter, yet it appeared to me that

Sherlock Holmes Essay
Sherlock Holmes was a famous English detective. He had a reputation of accepting only unusual and mysterious cases. When Helen Stoner contacted
him, he was intrigued. Helen contacted Holmes because her twin sister mysteriously died several years before. Helen does not trust her stepfather, Dr.
Roylott, and is fearful for her own life. She hired Holmes to figure out what happened to her sister.
While working this case, Holmes came to the conclusion that "doctors make the greatest criminals." I think he came to this conclusion because of
how Dr. Roylott was acting. Dr. Roylott was acting very suspicious and he was angry and aggressive. Holmes see's this when Helen went to visit
him. He saw Helen's injured wrist which had the markings of four fingers and a thumb printed on it. After establishing that Dr. Roylott will not be
home, Holmes decides to go out and inspect the house in which Helen lives in. Before Holmes had the chance to get out to Waterloo, Dr. Roylott

The tales are less serious in tone and concise. The opening tale begins not with an instant introduction to the adventure, but rather a conversation
between Watson and Holmes about the former's recent marriage, reflecting the Victorian value of marriage and family. Sherlock is known for assisting
damsels in distress, showcasing chivalry which was an expected trait of British gentlemen. In the story "A Case of Identity", Holmes is approached by
a young Mary Southerland who requests assistance locating her husband, who has gone missing before meeting his soon–to–be mother–in–law, once
again emphasising marriage and the importance of the traditional courtship rules of meeting the family and a taboo against eloping. The case ended
with no crime committed as "the law cannot...touch [Sutherland's Stepfather]," (Doyle 54), and is not the only case to conclude with no laws broken.
The deaths are far less gruesome and do not include weapons of mass destruction, rather resorting to methods such as falling off rock quarries (83),
supposed drowning (82), and snake bites (152). Doyle focuses the novels not on the crimes, but on the deduction, putting a greater emphasis on the
intelligence of Holmes instead of the crimes of those Holmes seeks to

Holmes' stalking is seen as him seeking an outlet for his outrage caused by the childhood trauma. We can go further and diagnose Holmes in two ways.
First, the young Holmes thought about killing Moriarty when the latter broke the news to him because, as a boy, he might think that the whole tragedy
would not have taken place had Moriarty kept his mouth shut. The young Holmes repressed his wish to kill Moriarty. Now, Holmes' stalking, as a
neurotic symptom, has a sense in carrying out that wish––only under a defence mechanism called projection: "I don't want to kill Moriarty. It is he who
wants to kill me." Second, the root of Holmes' neurosis could be his unresolved Oedipus complex. The love for his mother and the hate toward his
father were intensified when the young Holmes learned about the murder. Since he could not kill his father, he transferred his hatred to the tutor,
Moriarty, another father figure, who, in Holmes' unconscious, was deeply involved in the murder and mixed up with his father. Holmes' stalking,
therefore, has a sense in avenging his mother by killing his father, all through torturing

Holmes’ Method Of Madness

  • 1. Holmes’ Method of Madness A detail is defined as an individual feature, fact, or item, in The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have to use details to investigate the curse of the Baskervilles. Detectives Sherlock Holmes and Watson have an amazing attention to detail, however, sometimes they struggle with what is important; Holmes and Watson have to decide what is pertinent information, keep their minds on track, and be able to do both of those in order to solve the Baskerville case. To begin, detectives need evidence to piece together a crime, but determining what is evidence and what's not is the most difficult part of solving a case. There is a method, however, for figuring out whether a clue may be used in the case or not. This method is part of Holmes method, the scientific method, where the investigation follows the process of: observing, speculating, deducting and making inferences about the crime. During the step of observing, every detail is taken in, even the most irrelevant details, which allow the investigators to make sure that they have all the information needed to solve their case. Next comes the hardest part, a clump of the last three steps, involving the process of analyzing every single detail a case has, speculating its place in the case and deducting the information if it doesn't fit to the speculated case. Eventually, those logical speculations that fit the case are formed into inferences, which are used to investigate the case ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Literary Elements Of Sherlock Holmes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle utilizes many detail–oriented literary elements to develop the many adventures of the famous fictional British detective Sherlock Holmes and his partner, John Watson. Long winded description and complex vocabulary are infused into Doyle's writing to accentuate Holmes's great intelligence. By incorporating such a heavy, educated tone upon the mysteries, the tales of Sherlock Holmes are expressed as very complicated stories that challenge readers in comprehension as well as encourage curiosity through puzzling cases. One of the most important literary features of Doyle's works is the use of dialogue and conversations held between characters, whether it be Holmes, Watson, a victim, and so forth. It seems that a key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another factor to consider is how Holmes is written to be asking Watson even though he understands that Watson is not on the same page. This curious occurrence in the interactions between Holmes and Watson may also elevate the status Holmes imposes on the text and to the readers. Not only can the dialogue bring life to the story, but it can tell the story itself, as seen in many instances in which Holmes has wrapped up another mystery. Most cases are concluded with a recollection of events and revealing hints that only Holmes knew of, presented almost conversationally from Holmes to Watson. With his first–person account of the mystery, Doyle uses Holmes to clarify any remaining confusion or questions that linger in readers' minds as the chapter ends. While it is repetitive after several cases, granting Holmes with such large chunks of dialogue eliminates the need for boring, lengthy straight–forward narration. A good example of the use of retelling in dialogue in place for narration can be found in The Red–Headed League. A combination of complex writing and sophisticated vocabulary also follow the genius detectives' mysteries and help to represent his intelligence through Doyle's skillful work. Each story is written with extensive vocabulary as well as depth, which also alludes/attributes to Holmes himself. Therefore, Doyle was careful to ensure that the professional nature of Holmes was also conveyed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Sherlock Holmes Summary Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson arrive at the hotel in London where Sir Henry is staying. They find Sir Henry very mad because another boot was missing. He said the first boot that had been taken away had been put back, and a second old black boot was now gone. None of the hotel staff knew anything about this. They also discussed who the person following Sir Henry could be. The only person they know at Baskerville Hall who has a black beard is the butler, Mr. Barrymore. To figure out if Mr. Barrymore is at home, they decide to send him a telegram and to deliver it in person. If he is not there, the telegram would be returned to the sender. Sherlock Holmes then says that Sir Henry needs a bodyguard at Baskerville Hall. He said that Mortimer is too busy to be able to do that, and he says that he is too busy with commitments so tells everyone that Dr. Watson will go with Sir Henry to Baskerville Hall. As they try and figure out more clues about the case, they get word that Mr. Barrymore is in Devonshire because he was there to receive the telegram. Also, the cab driver who Sherlock Holmes had sent for earlier comes to their door. He tells Homes that the bearded man who he had driven around claimed to be a detective. He had told them to say nothing to anyone. Strangest of all, the man had claimed to be named "Mr. Sherlock Holmes". Holmes is very surprised and also amused. • 4. Watson And Holmes Relationship The Relationship Between Holmes and Watson Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have been seen as the ultimate partners for as long as they have been in print. Their relationship is far deeper than anything that meets the eye; they mean more to each other than just a business partner or friend. Some have seen their relationship as anything from that of best friends, to homosexual lovers, or to heterosexual lovers as seen between a male Holmes and a female Watson. Whether these statements can be proven or not remains a facet controlled by the reader, but several other useful implications can be drawn from their relationship. No matter what Watson and Holmes mean to each other, both men seem to follow certain trends throughout the story. Each ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Popularity Of Sherlock Holmes Sherlock Holmes has been adjusted on media since long and is considered as a standout amongst the most played characters on Television Series and on other such stages. As per Guinness World Records, Sherlock Holmes is the "most depicted motion picture character," with more than 70 performing artists having played the sleuth in more than 200 movies. Current interpretations of the show, for example, Sherlock and Elementary, give present day turns on the 125–year–old character, and as of late Sir Ian McKellen has reported that he will be playing a 93–year–old form of the notorious 'counseling investigator' in the 2015 film Mr. Holmes. • 6. The Mystery Of Sherlock Holmes A private detective is a detective who is not a member of an official force but is employed by a private party or self–employed in his or her own practice. The most famous mystery fictional character Sherlock Holmes is a perfect example of what a private investigator is and should be. In this paper, I will be discussing Sherlock Holmes' life along with the several unique ways he solves his mysteries throughout his books. I will also be comparing and contrasting him with other detectives and review the impact his stories left on others. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the British writer and physician who created the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. He portrays Holmes so be the smartest and most effective detective in London, England. Holmes was a character very much of his time and place, who appealed to British readers directly by confronting the messy, changeable world they live in (Long). Most people in today's time are still fairly familiar to such a strongly created character even though his mystery stories were written around the late 1800's and early 1900's. Doyle got his inspiration for Holmes from his professor, Joseph Bell, the famous Scottish lecturer who taught at the medical school of University of Edinburgh. Doyle's most famous book was "The Hound of the Baskervilles", written in the early 1900's. Which is a mystery where everyone thinks a ghostly, killer–like dog, which has haunted the Baskerville family for generations, killed Sir Charles. This is just one of the ... • 7. Sherlock Holmes Emotionally Intelligent Sherlock Holmes has been featured in several stories by his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Traditionally, he has been highly regarded for his intellect. Nonetheless, a multifold of readers question if Holmes has emotions. Holmes' thoughts are a mystery. Readers only know the thoughts of his friend Dr. John Watson, who narrates the stories Holmes is in. I have reason to believe that Holmes has displayed through his actions, including through what he says, that he indeed has emotions. At the same time, Holmes does not allow his emotions to hinder or get in the way of his work. Introduction to the Character Sherlock Holmes Sherlock Holmes is still a popular character, even though Doyle created Holmes over a century ago. According to the website... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Holmes' daily goal is to be mentally stimulated. He says it himself in The Sign of Four that "I cannot live without brainwork" (104). This striving to always be mentally stimulated causes Holmes to put his all into solving mysteries. However, Holmes also finds stimulation through his drug habits. This is further explained in the article "Addiction, Empire, and Narrative in Arthur Conan Doyle's "'The Sign of the Four'" written by Christopher Keep and Don Randall. These authors bring up that Homes' drug obsession is a hazard to Holmes' health. Dr. Watson confirms this, and Watson brings up a good point that Holmes risks losing "great powers" he's been blessed to having (referring to his intellect). Keep and Randall say that "the drug is both remedy and poison," just as Watson admits the drug can make Holmes feel good, but it has negative health effects (Keep and Randall 211, Doyle 99, 100). The cocaine that Holmes uses, according to Randall and Keep, was originally created as an anesthesia to soothe the pain of surgery. Yet few people realize that doctors, alike Sherlock in real life, are constantly solving health–related cases to defend our health. • 10. The Substance Of Sherlock Holmes There's is arguably nothing worse in life than boredom. If given a chance to alleviate the mundanity of our everyday lives we would all gladly take it. Well, luckily there is or has been a remedy for boredom. Some people (the fans) have argued that the cure for our insufferable and bland lives has been on screen since 2010. And it's name is Sherlock. The tv show brought to us by the BBC has become a cult phenomenon since it hit our screens in the early 2010s. But why? What's so great about a tv show starring two British guys? Well the answer is simple, complexity. The substance in Sherlock whose synopsis is about a "consulting detective" named Sherlock Holmes who solves crimes along with his sidekick John Watson is unbelievable. In a book entitled Signs of Life in the USA, there are two writers Seger and Ray; both of whom discuss common Hollywood tools used to make films popular. In an article, published by Linda Seger entitled, Creating a Myth, she talks about the many tropes Hollywood or cinema in general uses relate to its audience. One of the most famous and popular methods she points out as being that of the "Hero Myth." In it's most simplistic form the "Hero Myth" is about an unwilling character seeking and finding adventure all the while being transformed. If we go back to the tv show Sherlock it contains specific parts of the "Hero Myth." However, it also contains much more. Sherlock Holmes Personality While the reasons for Sherlock Holmes popularity in the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth are comprehensible enough in the light of the abovementioned facts, the explanation for Sherlock`s continuing success requires a more detailed analysis. Many characters that were popular at the time of their creation are forgotten today; at the same time some images developed hundreds of years ago are still famous and have become iconic in modern culture. • 12. Holmes Vs Moriarty Sherlock Holmes has been a prevalent character in popular culture since his creation. Recently he has been revived in such adaptations as the Sherlock Holmes movie series, Elementary on CBS, and BBC's Sherlock. The iconic detective, followed closely behind by his companion John Watson, solves crimes just in the nick of time leaving us breathless from suspense and awed by his deductions. With Holmes portraying the proverbial white knight there must be an opposing force for him to triumph against. The notorious and nefarious James Moriarty is this opposing force. He is described as a spider in the center of a web, controlling everything but staying hidden in the shadows. In the BBC's adaptation of these classic tales they portray Holmes and Moriarty as opposites when in all actuality they are more like two sides to the same coin. Holmes likes to solve crime. Likes to fix things for people. Moriarty does the same just in a more criminal sense and they both do it for the same reason. Boredom. Both the detective and the criminal mastermind complain about being bored and the boring people that surround them. They both search for someone as clever as they are to keep their minds occupied. • 13. Holmes And Watson's Dichotomy A common trope seen in the detective genre is the dichotomy between the detective and their companion. While the detective normally serves as the primary character and voice of reason within the novel, their companion acts as a contrasting character and is often the story's narrator. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet redefines the necessity of a companion for the detective. In analyzing the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, it is evident that their relationship is mutually beneficial. Although Doyle highlights the differences between the two men, he also demonstrates the important role that each man plays in the other's life. The novel begins with a description of his near–death experiences and subsequent arrival in London. Lonely and weakened from his time in Afghanistan, Watson is eager for companionship and finds it in Sherlock Holmes. Living with Holmes provides him with something to focus on, as he tells the reader "this man stimulated my curiosity, and how often I endeavored to break through the reticence which he showed on all that concerned himself," (Doyle 16). His friendship with Sherlock not only gives him companionship, but it also provides a sense of purpose when he invites Watson to the crime scene of Enoch Drebber. Watson and Sherlock's reaction to the murder are drastically different. While Sherlock is described as hearing the news the crime scene calmly, Watson cries "Why this is terrible," (26). While Sherlock looks at the crime objectively, Watson provides the emotional response. Watson's emotional response drives him to help Sherlock with the case, as he realizes that "justice must be done, and that the depravity of the victim was no condonement in the eyes of the law," (43). • 14. Stalin And Holmes Essay The acclaimed authors, Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle, formulate the characters of Auguste Dupin and Sherlock Holmes respectively, to be similar in the way they analyze, deduce, and connect segments of often–thought "unsolvable" cases. Through their comparable techniques and system of deduction, Dupin and Holmes never fail to trace back evidence to the scene of the crime. However, due to vast differences between the authors' writing styles, the audience observes the main characters as distinct individuals, ultimately reinforcing the notion that Dupin and Holmes are not clones, but rather characters from different backgrounds that evolve to epitomize heroic private detectives. The ability to arrive to conclusions through careful analysis of the obvious and the hidden, is a trait not present in many figures. Dupin and Holmes are akin to one another in the way that they... When the Prefect spends all his time looking at the nooks and crannies of the premises, including microscopic searches of the rungs of the chair and the jointings of each furniture, Dupin focuses his search on random piles of letters and papers left near Minister D.'s writing table. Dupin glimpses across a letter that is "radically different from the one of which the Prefect had read [him] so minute a description" (Poe 476). Careful observation of specific elements of this particular letter, such as the excessive crumples and tears, lead Dupin to finalize his speculation that the purloined letter is indeed the one right before his very ... • 15. The Characters Of Sherlock Holmes "It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts." (Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes) This is one of the many lines in Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes Mysteries. Conan Doyle, born in May of 1859, published the first Sherlock Holmes mystery, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887. When he died in July of 1930 there were 4 novels as well as 56 short stories that featured Holmes. Even though some of the plots throughout the series are unrealistic many of the cultural details are real. Doyle describes London in a great amount of detail, including the smog that fell upon the city. For example, some of the locations Doyle writes about are in fact real places; some of the characters are based off people he knew in his life, and throughout the novels and stories there are many weapons and ammo that were actually used in the nineteenth century. Inspiration for the Characters Conan Doyle was attending medical school at the University of Edinburgh when he met Dr. Joseph Bell, his professor. Bell was a lecturer and an excellent surgeon. He wrote many scientific books and was even Queen Victoria's personal surgeon whenever she came to Scotland. However, what made Bell so amazing was his ability to connect with his patients. He would astonish his students by being able to determine a patient's occupation and other personal details simply by observing them. After Sir Doyle graduated medical ... • 16. Holmes 's Unbelievable Flaws : Holmes Holmes's Unbelievable flaws Holmes is a very complex and moody character who, although of strict habit, is considerably messy. Holmes appears to undergo periods of obsession and depression, the latter of which are accompanied by violin playing, and cocaine use. All of Conan Doyle's stories are told from Watson's first–person perspective, and yet, Holmes flaws are not criticized but glamourized. While Holmes is a clever and observant man, his flaws are very clear to people around him. Holmes takes considerable pride in his ability and his ego is clearly evident to those around him; also, his impatience with those of lesser intelligence than his makes it trying to others who are with him. On the 20th of March, 1888 in "A scandal in Bohemia," Watson and Holmes are arguing in 221 Baker Street. Watson and Holmes argue, "Then, how do you know?" "I see it, I deduce it. How do I know that you have been getting yourself very wet lately, and that you have a most clumsy and careless servant girl?" "My dear Holmes," said I, "this is too much. You would certainly have been burned had you lived a few centuries ago. It is true that I had a country walk on Thursday and came home in a dreadful mess, but as I have changed my clothes I can 't imagine how you deduce it" (Scandal). "Burned"? Many aspects of medicine parallel the methods utilized by Holmes and Watson. While rotating at the county hospital I discovered that a patient's background often shapes the foundation of their illness. These people have created many films depicting Doyle's stories. In some films such as The Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, the story line is the same as Doyle's original but some names and characters have been changed. In the films, The Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, the story proceeds the same as a detective solving a seemingly impossible case. In Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock uses his deductive reasoning to solve a case that has been brought up that no one knows how to solve. The creative use of dialogue assists in telling the story fluently and vividly, while a suspenseful and occasionally humorous tone maintains interest from case to case. This excerpt alone can describe the relationship between the detective and his partner, separating Holmes from Watson by interpreting how he observes and infers upon the scene of the crime versus Watson, who is intelligent nonetheless but not as keen as Holmes in identifying such specific details. In terms of this discussion, it can be assumed that Doyle may have intended to use this dialogue to play out the scene in a dynamic way to show the difference between the two. Here, Holmes carries most of the conversation while Watson listens and struggles to follow Holmes's complicated thinking. Another factor to consider is how Holmes asks Watson many rhetorical questions. This aspect of their interactions compares their sense of understanding as well, suggesting that Holmes has a habit of asking these questions to explain his observations to Watson. In relation to dialogue and narration, Watson's style of storytelling is more straightforward and adopts a suspenseful tone that suits the mystery genre well. Since Watson tends to only see things as they are, there are more blind spots in his sight compared to Holmes. Because he is more visual and tends to impart very little of his own style, it makes readers anxious to discover what Watson will encounter next and what Holmes will reveal.
