Othello Movie Vs Play
There are many differences and similarities between the Othello play and the 1995 movie directed
by Oliver Parker, although the setting, plot and characters remain the same. Parker does make some
changes in other ways, and those changes are what offer some of the differences between the two.
Some of the differences between the film and play are: the different interpretations of lago; the use
of imaginary sequences; and the fact that the movie has cut an abundant amount of the text. The first
is perhaps of most significance. Rather than changing the story the director successfully uses his
cinematic tools to deliver the complexity of emotion and conflict felt by both Othello and Iago. The
Director also uses Othello's dreams to make Othello's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The scene features Othello and Desdemona kissing which builds upon the dramatic passion they
share for each other. You can infer by Othello's demeanor that he is confident and proud of his
actions and also Iago's feelings toward Othello are very comparable to the play. When Iago states, "I
hate the Moor" it is obvious that he does not like Othello, but he says that when he is alone, so only
the audience knows of his hatred for Othello. Contrariwise, in the play's first scene Roderigo states,
"Thou toldst me thou didst hold him in they hate" and Iago replies "Despise me if I do not" (Othello.
1.1). Because this is not in the film the director used a different strategy to reveal Iagos strategy to
destroy Othello by using Chess pieces. Parker uses mysterious lighting and a fireplace to give the
audience a feeling of mischievousness while Iago situates the Black King and White Queen next to
each other, then he inserts a white knight in between, which is clearly representative of him. The
film audience feels Iago's split personality much easier than the play due to the facial expressions
enhanced by camera angles, and music. He seems to be everyone's friend, and even Othello calls
him "Honest Iago". Othello is consistently seen as a military hero, honorable and noble, so when he
is overwhelmed by weakness it puts the

William Shakespeare 's Play Othello

Drama Research Paper Shakespeare's Play Othello is one of the more notable plays produced during
his playwright tenure, the play starts off with Othello who is a moor but the general of the Venetian
Army. In this particular play Shakespeare placed several different themes throughout the play but
two of the main themes were Love and Race. Othello is strong, confident man he is the head of one
the most prestigious armies in all Europe. But with all that success Othello had envious people
watching gain all this success, one of the people's name is Iago who. The straw that finally broke the
camel's back is when Othello eloped with the beautiful Desdemona daughter of Venetian senator
Brabantio. She disappoints her father by having wed the moor Othello and he disowns her for
having done such a deed. Brabantio even said to Othello that Desdemona would betray him just like
she betrayed her father.
In fact, being that Othello was from a foreign land and he was dark skinned this angered Iago even
more to the point that he concocted an elaborate story to break up Desdemona and Othello. Iago
manipulated Othello into believing that his sweet, loving was an adulteress and has lain with none
other than Michael Cassio. Othello has great love for Desdemona so when he hears this news he
becomes enraged. Through all the adversity he has faced for marrying Desdemona, he was even
accused by Brabantio of using trickery because he

Racism And Racism In Othello
Race plays an important role in William Shakespeare's Othello: an intense tragedy of an admired
military general, who is driven to kill his wife and himself out of jealously. Othello is of Black
African descent, which separates him from many in his Venetian world. Throughout the play,
Othello's race is seen as a negative aspect of his character, which is used by the antagonist, Iago, as a
weak point to initiate chaos. The play depicts racism and uses the influence of radicalized
perspective to create a tragedy. Shakespeare created Othello to be a great leader, a powerful and
noble man, to defy Venetian societal views. He did so effectively through the development of varied
interpersonal relationships, and how racism effects each of them.
When Othello is first introduced into the play, the audience knows that he is a well–respected leader.
As the play continues, racist and non–racist views become quite evident, which eventually effect the
actions and ways Othello sees himself. Othello's wife, Desdemona, is a young Caucasian woman,
who recognizes Othello for his true self, not his race. She admires the "dangers that [he] had passed"
(1.3.193. Shakespeare, William. Othello), and his abilities as a valiant leader. Desdemona knows
that her inter–racial marriage is not common, or widely approved of, yet she continues to "trumpet
to the world" (1.3.285. Shakespeare, Othello) her love for him. Her unwavering devotion to Othello
is a critical detail because she stays true to her feelings in a world where she is surrounded by
discrimination towards Othello. Before Iago approaches Desdemona's father, Brabantio, about their
marriage, Othello expresses that "[Desdemona's] father loved [him]" (1.3.149. Shakespeare,
Othello), and often invited him into their home (1.3.149. Shakespeare, Othello). These examples of
characters from the play and their non–racist views of Othello prove that Othello is a play that
illustrates racism, not a play meant to offend and segregate against people of colour.
Many critics of Othello have suggested that Shakespeare wrote a racist play, and that Shakespeare
himself wanted to convince others that even a black man in Venetian society will eventually revert
to his violent and animal–like ways

Sympathy For Othello In Shakespeare's Play
The play Othello, written by William Shakespeare, can spark numerous thoughts and interpretations
that differ between individuals based on the point of view of each particular character. For example,
one of the main characters, Othello, endures a considerable amount of complications and events that
lead to his downfall, which he concludes with a final speech. In T.S. Eliot's essay called
"Shakespeare and the Stoicism of Seneca," the analyzation of the context suggests that Othello's
words and explanations are simply making the audience think about himself, rather than the horrific
actions that he performed. By examining the language, the tone, and the context of Othello's final
speech, I believe that Othello is partly drawing sympathy for ... Show more content on

In agreeance to Eliot's analysis of Othello, Othello may center the last half of his final speech in
hopes for sympathy of his audience. Othello directly states that he got caught up in the tricks and
manipulations of Iago and others (V, ii, 364). Othello also speaks of the change that the events that
occurred and the actions that he carried out had on him. By stating that he was not an emotional
man, but then who cried a lot, Othello is suggesting to his audience that the change of his manhood
resulted from the manipulations that Iago forced upon him and the crime that he committed
regarding Desdemona (V, ii, 368–369). At the end of Othello's final speech, Othello describes an
event that he endured while at war to suggest to the audience the way in which he would conclude
the speech by killing himself. In Aleppo, he once saw a Turk beating a Venetian, to which he
responded by grabbing the Turk and hitting him (V, ii, 368–372). Othello then proceeds to kill
himself in front of his audience in the exact manner that he killed the Turk who was beating a
Venetian, which draws sympathy from the Venetians and other members of his

Othello, The Moor of Venice Essay examples
Othello, the Moor of Venice is one of the major tragedies written by William Shakespeare that
follows the main character, Othello through his trials and tribulations. Othello, the Moor of Venice is
similar to William Shakespeare's other tragedies and follows a set of specific rules of drama. The
requirements include, following the definition of a tragedy, definition of tragic hero, containing a
reversal of fortune, and a descent from happiness. William Shakespeare fulfills Aristotle's
requirements in this famous play. Aristotle the famous philosopher outlined several requirements in
which a play or piece of drama is to follow.
The first rule that is met in Shakespeare's play is that Othello is considered tragic hero, which every

Othello's tragic flaw can be viewed as jealously which ultimately leads to his downfall. When
Othello is manipulated by Iago to believe that Desdemona is having an affair with Desdemona,
Othello does not change from his good person mentality. However, Othello carries out with the plan
for murder for which he believes is a fine reason to end Desdemona's once previous life to preserve
her innocence. Othello is the tragic hero within the play titled after him and because of his title,
because of this Othello, the Moor of Venice follows one of Aristotle's requirements. Aristotle's
second requirement for a tragedy is that the tragic hero must have a reversal of fortune. In the
beginning of the play, Othello is seen as content with his new bride: "For know, Iago, But that I love
the gentle Desdemona" (1.2.24–25). As the play progresses, and Iago's plan culminates, Othello's
good fortune begins to turn. After Othello returns from war at sea with the Turks, his fortune begins
a downward spiral. Shakespeare often focuses his plays on human nature as well as fate, which
Othello's fate ended in the tragic ending due to his reversal of fortune once the claims against
Desdemona begin. After Othello learns of a possible affair between Cassio and Desdemona, at this
instance is the turning point in Othello's fortune because it changes his views, attitudes and
ultimately his fate. "In

In Shakespeare’s Othello, Othello Is as Much a Victim of...
Oliver Parker's 1995 interpretation of Shakespeare's 1600's timeless classic Othello presents a
differing construction of Othello from the original play, achieved through uses of a plethora of film
devices. Both the play and the film masterfully spin a tale of romance, tragedy and death telling the
fall of glory of Othello due to the acts of his ensign Iago, albeit with several differences in the
presentation. Both Shakespeare and Parker explore themes of jealousy, power, and racism through
the key characters of Othello and Iago. Parker utilises cutting, close–ups, mise–en–scene, music and
a variety of others to bring his own in–depth dissection and construction of Othello.
In the opening scenes of the play, Othello is the noble hero, he ... Show more content on

In the entirety of the film Parker places many symbols, inferring the downfall of Othello, through
clever scenic locations and the addition of his own locations, Parker is able to provide a different
and fresh interpretation of Othello. In the film Parker is able to show Othello having visible seizures
while showing false images of Desdemona together with Cassio, allowing the progression of
Othello's collapse to be observed, in another scene Parker places Othello in a dungeon hidden
behind bars, symbolising the emergence of the dark 'green eyed monster' from within him. Parker
integrates the plays act 3 scene 3 and turns it into a whole new entity showing the marriage of
Othello and Iago, this scene is the climax of both of the play and the film with Othello succumbing
to Iago's words that Desdemona is a 'whore'. They form a blood bond, this symbolising the blood
shed about to occur caused by Othello insecurities being pounced on by Iago.
Parker's film constructs a unique and unstable character of Othello, whose downfall is caused by his
insecurities being preyed upon by the malicious Iago. Both Shakespeare's and Parker's text explore
themes of power and jealousy utilising Iago and Othello as vessels for these ideas. Othello is
constructed to be a honest man, whose is obsessed with power and control, without his mask of
power, Iago plotting is able to bring upon his

Analysis Of Othello: Adapting A Written Play Into A Live...
Adapting a written play into a live action film necessarily requires an interpretation of the original
work to determine how it should be portrayed in the new medium. While there are no "wrong"
interpretations, some take greater creative license where others more closely convey the original.
Numerous factors affect this authenticity, but three of the most crucial are plot, characters, and
overall spectacle. Evaluating these elements in Orson Welles' 1952 and Janet Suzman's 1988
adaptations of William Shakespeare's tragedy Othello provides an analysis of the extent to which
these two films resemble the original.
The plot is probably the single most important characteristic to asses when examining the accuracy
of a screenplay compared to its

Essay Othello and Iago in William Shakespeare's Play
Othello and Iago in William Shakespeare's Play
Othello, the main character in the play is married to Desdemona. At the start of the play Othello is
seen as evil and bad by all the other characters and the audience. Brobantio (Desdemona's father),
dislikes Othello very much at the start of the play. This is because Othello married Desdemona
without her father's consent and Brobantio thinks Othello has used black magic to win Desdemona's
love. Whereas, this isn't the case, Othello married Desdemona because he loved her and she loved
him. Also, in the time period the play is set, women were never seen as very important people in
society and they were seen as the property of men. Usually their husband ... Show more content on

In other words, Desdemona loved Othello for the life threatening things he's done and Othello loved
Desdemona for pitying them. This remark clears his name for marrying Desdemona. The Duke and
Brobantio become convinced that Othello loves Desdemona enough, to set Othello free, without
facing any serious charges. We also learn, Othello is called on business to Cyprus and he has been
"most hotly called for", in the court case. In other words, Othello has been called to Cyprus because
he is a very important soldier. Othello takes Desdemona to Cyprus with him. This shows Othello is a
kind and honest man because he is kind enough to take his wife with him, not to leave her behind
like many men would have.
On the other hand, however, the audience see that Iago is evil and bad, the first time they meet him,
whereas, all the characters see him as honest and good at the start of the play. Roderigo is easily
tricked into thinking Iago is going to help get him and Desdemona together, (even though
Desdemona is already married), if he keeps paying Iago to help. Iago is just conning Roderigo out of
money; the audience can see that Iago is evil and bad here but the character, Roderigo, doesn't.
The audience soon finds out that, Iago hates Othello because Othello gave Michael Cassio the job
Iago has been wanting for ages, (Othello's second man in command). Iago also tells the audience

Compare And Contrast Othello Play And Movie
Shakespeare was somewhat difficult for me and was probably for most high school students. Many
high school students will study some form of Shakespeare, play or sonnet in high school English. A
lot of students don't know anything about him, so it wouldn't hurt to teach them about Shakespeare.
Adaptations are m because they can take something original and make changes so that can be better
understand. In this essay, I will compare and contrast characters and settings from the graphic novel
and the movie "O", to help decide which adaptation is better for high school students.
In the graphic novel, Othello is somewhat similar to O know as Odin who basically is Othello in the
movie. The novel, Othello is the general, a leader to Venice. He has ... Show more content on

This makes him jealous because the garden is a romantic place.
Another critical similarity in setting in both adaptations is Desdemona's/Desi's bedroom. Both
adaptations use Desdemona's bedroom as the place where Othello takes Desdemona's/Desi's life
because he was angry and jealous believing Iago's lies that she cheated on him. Iago/ Hugo also kills
his wife/girlfriend, Emilia/Emily in the same bedroom because she started telling Othello/O the truth
about Iago's/Hugo's dishonesty. Desdemona's bedroom is an important place because it shows the
love they have for each other. The bedroom is supposed to be a place where they show an intimacy
and feel comfortable, but both couples turn it into a place of death, sadness, and regret. At the same
time, the setting was very different from both the movie and novel. In the graphic novel, it took
place in Venice then moved to Cyprus. In the movie, their school was like Venice but then moved to
the basketball court that'was supposed to be Cyprus for "war". Also, in the graphic novel mostly the
entire story took place at the palace where Othello lived. It changed from time to time but the story
was mostly in the palace. In the movie, the setting changed all the time. First, it was at the basketball
court, then at school, later at someone'was house, or the team's locker

Don't Blame Lago in Shakespeare's Play, Othello Essay
It is very easy to blame Iago for all that occurs throughout the play. He clearly is the reason for all of
the tragedies at the end of the play. Iago is the the villain in the play but he shouldn't be the only
person blamed. Othello, Cassio and other characters should be guilty for the tragedies as well. Iago
sets everyone up in the play and makes them think that he is helping each of them while he is really
tricking them into what he wants them to do. He does this all because he wants a higher ranking job.
Othello is a very jealous person and is sensitive when it comes to Desdemona that Iago is able to

youth and gets him drunk which winds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Iago is able to uses Othello's jealousy against him and is easily able to convince him of things.
Othello is too easily convinced that Desdemona is cheating on him. Because he is so jealous he is
quickly convinced through little proof that it is true and begins to trust everything Iago tells him.
Othello is too jealous and caught up in Iago's lies that he doesn't trust her when he confronts her
about everything Iago told him. He put too much trust in Iago that he ends up killing his love,
Desdemona even though she was telling the truth and he was being tricked the entire time. Othello is
very much responsible for what happens. He gets caught up in all of the lies and lets his jealousy
overtake him. He is unable to trust Desdemona when she tells him its not true because he has
becomes so jealous and angry. Rodrigo can also be blamed for what happens. Rodrigo was deeply in
love with Desdemona and was very jealous of Othello and didn't like those who also liked
Desdemona. Iago tricks him that he is putting in good words for him with Desdemona when he
never did and just stole his money. He tells Rodrigo that Cassio loved Desdemona also and urged
him to kill Cassio. Rodrigo being deeply in love with her is easily convinced by Iago and ultimately
kills him. Rodrigo is responsible for Cassio's death as he lets his jealously of others who like
Desdemona lead him to killing Cassio. Emilia is another character that can be blamed for what
happens. She agrees to help

The Play ' Lysistrata ' And ' Othello '
When reading Lysistrata and Ajax I noticed that there are some differences and similarities in both
plays, first I would like to start off with Lysistrata. In Lysistrata we can see that in Lysistrata it talks
about marriage and sex how it is affected by war , it demonstrates the perspective what the women
go through when the men are away. It demonstrates the anger and frustration the wives have towards
their husbands when they are gone, they refuse to have sex with their husbands until they agree to
sign a peace treaty in order to stop the war.
Ajax demonstrates the struggles with decisions of suicide, we see the difficult decision of what is
right and wrong. It demonstrates the effects of PTSD. Ajax shows us a person who used to ... Show

This has said to bring the character conflict with their gods and community or someone who's
representing an opposing will.
I believe that both of these stories are giving the same message about war. War is not easy and, even
today we see the struggles that not only the solider goes through but the soldiers' wife and the
family. If we really think about it, a solider is deployed at weeks, months, maybe even years at a
time. They see things that we cannot even begin to comprehend, they experience things we cannot
imagine. It is very hard to get over these things that happen. These two plays do an excellent job at
demonstrating the effects on both sides of a marriage. However, I believe that they are not saying
the same thing. Lysistrata, tends to demonstrate the importance behind the emotions of women
whereas Ajax focuses more on the emotions of men .
We see the conflict that arises in both of these stories, and we can easily tell the difference between
the two, we tend to notice the importance of how Lysistrata and the other women are withholding
sexual intercourse with their husbands until they have agreed to sign this peace treaty allowing the
war to stop and they get their husbands back.
I read one particular section of Lysistrata, it was the part when Lysistrata was with all the women
and they taking the oath all together. Lysistrata, wanted to make sure that these women took the oath
for one thing, but also knew what it meant and that

Iago The Villain Of Shakespeare 's Play The Tragedy Of...
In Act 1 we are introduced to Iago the villain of Shakespeare's play The Tragedy of Othello. Iago is
motivated by his own personal gains, and uses people as pawns to help achieve his own goals. Iago
is able to manipulate people easily by observing each person carefully and exploiting their
weaknesses. In Act 1 Iago manipulates Roderigo by convincing him that he is going to help him win
Desdemona over; Iago also convinces Othello that he is trustworthy and his loyal standard–bearer,
but in fact Iago is only using their misplaced trust to help himself. In the first scene we learn that
Iago dislikes Othello because he made Cassio his lieutenant, although he is unexperienced in
battling, even though "three great ones of the city in personal suit [asked Othello] to make [Iago] his
lieutenant" (Act 1, Scene 1, Line 8–9). This may not be the only reason, however, because "it is
thought abroad that 'twixt [his] sheets [Othello has] done [Iago's] office", (Act 1, Scene 3, Line 355–
356), meaning that it was rumored that Othello and Iago's wife had slept together. Even though it
was only a rumor Iago "will do, as if for surety", (Act 1, Scene 3, Line 360), which shows how
driven Iago is when it comes to his plot against Othello. At this point in the play we still do not have
a clear idea as to what Iago is going to do to Othello we only know that he wants revenge and he
wants to ruin Othello's marriage. In Act 1 we learn how clever and manipulative Iago can be, which
is horrible

Shakespeare's Play Othello and Tim Blake Nelson's Film O
Throughout the course of time, societies views have been persuaded by contextual influences, yet
the core human values have remained unaffected. Through the texts by composers William
Shakespeare and Tim Blake nelson and their texts Othello and the late 20th century contemporary
film O, the key values of trust, honesty and loyalty are explored with contextual influences being
reflected. The values are explored with the use of thematic development of the key issues jealousy
and appearance vs reality and the use of dramatic devices in Othello and cinematic techniques in O.
Shakespeare's accurate representation explored these values in an Elizabethan context where the
values of loyalty, honour and fidelity were apparent. In contrast, Tim Blake nelsons film express
similar views and attitudes to a more teenage–orientated audience and these values are replaced with
modern contextual values such as popular culture, peer pressure and popularity.
Jealousy plays a major role in Othello as it is the driving force which leads to the plays events being
carried out. The theme of jealousy is prevalent through characterization and the dishonoring of the
values of trust and loyalty. The character if Iago is the main who endures jealousy and dishonours
trust and loyalty which in the end he uses as a method to lead Othello to his downfall. Iago
dishonours Othello's trust by stating "My lord, you know I love you" but this contrasts with Iago line
"I follow him to serve my turn upon him".

In the start of the play, Othello, Iago is professing his hatred for Othello, for giving the lieutenant
position to Cassio over himself. Shakespeare uses this hatred to show that Cassio is clearly favored
in the army, because he is very inexperienced for the promotion, and is probably a sweet–talker that
others usually enjoy their presence. Cassio and Iago are foil characters to each other; a foil is a
character is one that shows qualities that are in contrast with the qualities of another character with
the objective to highlight the traits of the other character. Iago is very self–motivated, devious, and
is a ringleader for trouble. In contrast, Cassio is respectful, polite toward women, and truthful.

In addition, Cassio is respectful and a gentleman towards women, especially Desdemona. When
approaching her he greets her as, "the divine Desdemona" (II.i.80). He describes her as, "that

Basically saying her beauty is to perfect to describe and grasp. He praises her instead of lusting after
her. Although this is one of the best qualities a man could have toward a woman, Iago is going to
play the puppeteer and manipulate this quality Cassio has to get revenge on Othello for not
promoting him. In contrast, Iago lusts after women in a very beastial and aggressive manner. " Even
now, now very now, an old black ram/ Is tupping your white ewe" (I.i.97–98). When spilling the
truth about Othello and Desdemona's marriage, he screams up to her father's window howling
inappropiate, racial, and beastial description that proves his lust and sexuality toward woman. This
once again foreshadows that Iago is willing to take the respectful and honest Cassio down as long as
he get what he wants in the end, Desdemona. William Shakespeare introduces Cassio as an honest
and respectful man in order to juxtapose the villainous and revenge–seeking Iago through foil
characters. William Shakespeare is trying to foreshadow the fall of Cassio for being too much of a
nice guy and trusting others. He will fall within the scheme of Iago, to

Shakespeare's Play, Othello, is More than a Tragedy
The audience can perceive Shakespeare's play "Othello" as just a tragic play of a jealous man in the
early 1600s thinking that his wife is cheating on him with another man. It could be just that,
however it could be something much deeper. Many argue that the main character Othello may have
had a Oedipal Complex. This is a psychoanalytical theory introduced by Sigmund Freud in 1899. It
is the idea that one has a desire for sexual involvement with the parent of the opposite sex and a
sense of rivalry with the parent of the same–sex. The term is derived from a hero of a Greek legend
named Oedipus who unknowingly killed his father and married his mother. Connections can be
made to this complex through the relationship between Othello and his wife Desdemona.
Throughout Shakespeare's play "Othello", the audience can take notice of the Oedipal complex in
Othello by the handkerchief being a reflection of his feeling for his mother.
The handkerchief patterned with strawberries given to Desdemona as a token of love explains
Othello's attachment to his mother. He tells Desdemona that it was given to him by his mother and it
would ensure the spouse's love when kept, but if lost, one would lose the love too. In the play, it
seems as though Othello becomes seriously obsessed with the item. The key here, however, is in the
fact that the handkerchief originally belonged to Othello's mother. He wants to keep the image of his
mother alive, and he does this by giving the handkerchief to

Shakespeare's Use of Aristotle's Guidelines to Tragedy in...
Throughout time, the tragedy has been seen as the most emotionally pleasing form of drama,
because of its ability to bring the viewer into the drama and feel for the characters, especially the
tragic hero. This analysis of tragedy was formed by the Greek philosopher Aristotle, and also noted
in his Poetics (guidelines to drama). As a playwright, Shakespeare used Aristotle's guidelines to
tragedy when writing Othello. The play that was created revolved around the tragic hero, Othello,
whose tragic flaw transformed him from a nobleman, into a destructive creature, which would
inevitably bring him to his downfall. This transformation follows an organic movement of the

Third, was thought, which was used to show the characters' motives, either through soliloquy or
direct conversation. After those came diction, song and spectacle, which were used to contribute to
the unity of the play's plot. By using these guidelines, Shakespeare created one of his greatest
Aristotelian tragedies. This is because he applied the Poetics' guidelines to complex plot, the tragic
hero, and the establishment of pity, fear, and catharsis of the audience's emotions. The complex plot
follows Othello and his transformation from nobleman to monster through the exploitation of his
tragic flaw. As the plot moves from exposition, complication, challenge, conflict, climax, and finally
to dénouement, Othello goes through a recognition scene which leads to a reversal in his fortune and
his scene of suffering. As noted by Aristotle, a complex plot must be able to move organically from
beginning to end while still staying universal and probable. Also, as the plot moves on there should
be a clear movement from exposition to denomount. Finally, the tragedy should have a recognition
scene, a reversal of fortune, as well as a scene of suffering. In Othello, the organic movement of the
play is achieved by following Othello's transformation. At the beginning of the drama, the audience
finds out about the marriage between Othello

Othello: Film Vs. Play
Film vs. Play Shakespeare's famous play, "Othello", has caught the attention of many movie

way to help the younger generation to understand the story, and we can relate since many of the
viewers are most likely in high school. The character descriptions are also a little bit different. In the
play, Othello is a great warrior and general, but in the movie Odin is a great basketball player. Iago
was also a mastermind in the play, and took advantage of many people such as Roderigo. For
example, in Act 1 Scene 1, Iago tricks Roderigo into helping Brabantio search for Desdemona, but
ends up in front of Iago's sword. In the film, Hugo did not seem like the crazy mastermind like Iago.
Hugo did plot some crazy things, but it was nowhere near as genius as Iago's

Essay Tough Love in William Shakespeare’s play, Othello
In William Shakespeare's tragic play, Othello, Desdemona asserts, "'wouldst thou do such a deed for
all the world?'" (4.3.76). During a friendly banter, Desdemona asks Emilia this very question; would
she cheat on her husband to help him become monarch and have power over all the world? She
quietly replies that she would only in secret, but only for her husband's own good. This question
plays an essential role throughout Othello because Emilia is first accused of cheating on her
husband. Additionally, she is obsequious towards Iago because of her female role and responsibility
as a wife. As a result of being so obedient, she later steals the highly valued handkerchief because
her husband desired it. Shakespeare utilizes Emilia to portray ... Show more content on

Additionally, Emilia's adverse view on marriage and her husband matches Iago's unfavorable view
on women and marriage being less than enjoyable. Demonstrating her disregard for marriage,
Emilia declares, "'they are all but stomachs, and we all but food; they eat us hungerly, and when they
are full, they belch us'" (3.4.104–60. By saying this, she is showing knowledge and experience with
the relations of men and women and the cruel manner they treat each other. Emilia verbalizes how
men only use women to get what they desire, and disregard them when they cannot be expended to
any further extent. In the play, Iago uses Emilia to seize Desdemona's handkerchief, his treasured
article of Desdemona's as a gift of love from Othello. After gaining possession of the handkerchief,
he wants to present evidence of Othello's wife cheating on him. The final result of the stolen
handkerchief is death of multiple people including Emilia, Desdemona, and Iago. Emilia's thoughts
and sayings pertaining to marriage, if taken seriously, could have prevented numerous deaths.
Although a minor character, Shakespeare implements Emilia, and her decisions to remain silent or
voice her opinions, to establish his storyline and eventually tie it all together into a tragic play.
Emilia's choice to remain silent as the other characters spoke helped drive the play's action because
of her unforeseen insight on the dilemma about

Othello by William Shakespeare: An Epic Play Worth Reading
Have you ever seen a play that has a unique cast of characters and clearly shows us how when you
love somebody, they can eventually stab you in the back or when you kill somebody they stay alive
even though you stab them in the back numerous times and they apologize for something they did to
you? I can think of one play that can answer each of these questions and a whole lot more. This play
is Shakesphere's Othello and it is one with an epic war between Love and Evil. While reading
Othello, one encounters such diverse and dynamic characters as, Othello, Desdemona, Rodergio,

What Role Does Magic Play In Othello
Magic in Othello Magic has a huge effect on the characters in Othello, although it is not visible or
physical. It controls all of them and depicts or changes their thoughts and actions. In the play
Othello written by William Shakespeare, magic plays a major role in how the characters think and
act, often in ways unusual ways. Magic is not the kind you see in movies, but the kind that is built
up in their heads, to the point were it shapes their thoughts and opinions. Such as the handkerchief
given to Desdemona by Othello, it is symbol of love and trust for Othello, and it going "missing"

Description Of The Play In Othello
Othello: A 17th century soap
The play Othello was written by William Shakespeare and first performed in 1604. It tells the story
of a group of people who are entangled in a complex web of relationships and try to work out the
dynamics of their tiny society. This brings forth a load of drama that plays directly into hands of the
villain of the story: Iago. He carries a huge grudge against the main character: Othello. The storyline
in this play is so dramatic and complicated it can be compared to a television–soap nowadays. The
main characteristic of a soap is: 'an emphasis on family life, personal relationships, sexual dramas,
emotional and moral conflict. In my opinion the setting of the play, the relationships within and
Iago's role contribute to making Othello 17th century television–soap.
First of all, the setting of Othello greatly contributes to the dramatic storyline. In a modern soap, the
circumstances force the characters to face each other. For example, the characters usually form an

clear what the reason is. It is mentioned that Othello promoted Cassio instead of Iago to lieutenant

a motive to come up with a revenge plot and thereby create an interesting story. All characters are
influenced either directly or indirectly by Iago and this way all events are orchestrated by the 'Moor–

Othello Play And Movie Comparison Essay
Many people prefer the book version of a story rather than the film it tries to become. This is due to
the fact that the author's intent of his own story is much more intriguing and familiar to its readers
than just another film version. However, some versions portray the story better than others.
Hollywood seems to have taken up the responsibility of creating complicated and compelling
characters on screen. Unfortunately, doing so can easily take away a story's rich, necessary detail.
For instance, Shakespeare's Othello has a few different movie versions of his story. Both movies, the
1990 version by Trevor Nunn and the 1995 version by Oliver Parker, are great productions carried
by strong casts. However, there are areas in which the movie and the play differ. These differences
tend to interpret the film in a different way compared to what Shakespeare intended. The film
portrayals of Shakespeare's Othello by Parker and the other by Nunn both display the character of
Desdemona in very different ways. The Nunn version of this play did a much better job of

In the first scene she appears in, she is dressed in all white and looks like a peasant. Her white
clothing symbolizes purity and wholeness. She shows that she has given up the luxurious part of her
life to be with Othello. This shows her selflessness. Also, Nunn made her more child–like by
choosing an actress with a high–pitched voice. She always jumped into the scene with excitement in
her voice when she spoke. Nunn also made it obvious that Desdemona's character is very naive, just
like a pure child would be. This is a necessary element to have in her character because without her
ability to trust so easily she would have seen right through Iago's schemes. She needed to present
herself as a gullible woman in order to suspect that Iago was nothing but a good friend to

In many of his plays, Shakespeare demonstrates ideas of gender and racial stereotypes. Othello, a

Emilia does her husband's bidding by taking the handkerchief that Othello gave Desdemona because
Iago "hath a hundred times wooed to steal it" (3.3.308–309). After she gives him the handkerchief,
she asks Iago why he wants it and threatens to take it back if it is not for some good purpose (3.3.
333.335). In the end, she betrays her husband by revealing his plot to destroy Othello's life. In her
conversation with Desdemona about adultery, Emilia informs her that she would commit adultery,
"Nor I neither by this heavenly light; I might do 't as well i' the dark" (4.3.68–69). Emilia shows her
independence from her husband by admitting that she would commit adultery if the price were right.
Her cynical attitude toward men is shown as she says, "They are all but stomachs, and we all but
food; They eat us hungerly, and when they are full They belch us" (3.4.106–108). She does not
believe her marriage is based on love, rather she believes her husband sees her as a possession to be
used as he pleases.
The male characters of the play view women in varied ways. Cassio often admires Desdemona's
positive characteristics and states that she is "perfection" (2.3.25). Iago's attitude toward women is
critical and negative. He tells Emilia that women are "pictures out of doors, Bells in your parlors,
wildcats in your kitchens, Saints in your injuries, devils being offended, Players in your huswifery,
and huswives in your beds" (2.1.111–114) meaning that women are objects at

Explore How Shakespeare Examines the Themes If Jealousy...
Explore how Shakespeare examines the themes if jealousy and deception in Othello the play and
Othello the character. Sana Thomas
Jealousy and Deception are both continuous themes running through out Shakespeare's Othello.
Indeed, it is jealousy that provides the fuel for the plot and deception that leads to the classic
downfall of the 'hero' as is common in Shakespeare tragedies. However, it is a theme of hate that the
play opens. It is a hate of inveterate anger. It is a hate that is bound up with envy hanging on a
strained thread waiting to snap. In The Tragedy of Othello, William Shakespeare tells the tale of the
"noble Moor" whose honour and innocence bring about his downfall. Shakespeare writes of the
power of jealousy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The play opens in the middle of an argument. The deception begins when he blatantly lies to
Brabantio, telling him that Othello has bewitched his daughter into marrying him: "an old black ram
Is tupping your white ewe (1.1.89)". The language Iago uses to address Brabantio here is vulgar and
discourteous. The fact that he takes no heed that Brabantio is of a higher status than him is intended
to provoke and aggravate him, so that he will impart his rage when confronting Othello. This
confirms the audience's suspicion of Iago being cold, conniving and calculated.
As part of the audience, I believe that the handkerchief introduced in Act 3 symbolizes deceit for
which it is used. It is this handkerchief Othello had given Desdemona as a wedding present and a
token of the couple's eternal fidelity that acts as a catalyst to the unpleasant and poignant changes in
the play: the "napkin is too little (3.3.287)". Othello demands "ocular proof (3.3.360)" from Iago
that his wife Desdemona was committing adultery with Cassio: "Villain, be sure to prove my love a
whore (3.3.360)", Does Othello's insistence on proof suggest that this jealous husband is a nobler
man?
Iago must only deceive Othello by telling him that the handkerchief he so lovingly gave his wife is
not in his wife's possession but in Cassio's: "a hankerchief/did I see Cassio wipe his beard with
(3.3.440)."The fact that she lost it inadvertently and was unable to produce it when Othello

A Central Theme or Motif in the Play Othello, Is Jealousy
Jealousy is the central theme in the play "Othello" by William Shakespeare. It is the most famous
literary work that focuses on the dangers of jealousy. The play is a study of how jealousy can ruin
lives – even with only the most circumstantial evidence of guilt. The play opens in Venice and
revolves mainly around a man called Othello. It's his actions and thoughts which makes the play
interesting and suspenseful. Themes such as love, jealousy, betrayal, honesty and vengeance are all
important and widely portrayed throughout the play. However, as we venture into the play and the

His lack of experience brought upon his ruin. Jealousy is described throughout the play as a
monstrous emotion or more specifically, a "green–eyed monster". This becomes increasingly more
destructive and intense. However, it's at the end of the play that Othello commits extreme actions
because his jealousy has caused him to believe everything is true. Jealousy here is harnessed as a
weapon, a weapon made so lethal because its victim ultimately destroys himself and others around
him. It is interesting that Iago uses jealousy against Othello, as jealousy is likely the source of Iago's
hatred in the first place. In Othello, jealousy takes many forms, from sexual suspicion to
professional competition, but it is, in all cases, destructive. However, this jealousy was not originally
prominent Othello, but was rather developed through Iago's numerous plans of destruction, which is
understood through Othello's change in personality and actions taken.
By studying the text "Othello" by William Shakespeare, we are able to understand that jealousy is a
powerful emotion, one that can destroy relationships, and consume the mind. Whether sexual or
platonic, once the seed of jealousy is planted it can lead to devastating consequences, as seen in the
play. Jealousy can easily turn into anger, and overwhelm it's victim making them obsessed with the

Act 3 Scene 3 as the Turning Point of the Play Othello by William Shakespeare
Shakespeare wrote 'Othello' in 1602. During Elizabethan times there were very few black people in
England. The white people felt scared about the black people because they didn't understand them.
The play explores racism and mixed race relationships.
Shakespeare apparently felt free to handle Giraldi's story with perfect freedom. He transformed a
straggling narrative of sordid crime into compact drama and high tragedy. The masterly first act is
essentially Shakespeare's invention. In this act, Othello, who has eloped with Desdemona, is accused

We can see the anger and the resentment of Iago towards Othello by looking at the words that Iago
uses while reffering to Othello, for example "the Moor", "the devil", "an old black ram".
In terms of Iagos feelings towards Cassio, his feelings are of Jealousy because Iago expected him
self to be promoted. Cassio is being described by Iago as "mere prattle without practice, is all his
soldier ship". These words show that Cassio does not have the necessary experience in order to be
Othello's lieutenant.
"I hate the Moor" and "He's done my office" are words of resentment used during the play and they
describe the way Iago feels towards Othello and his idea of promoting Cassio as his Lieutenant.
Othello is portrayed as a loyal and faithful soldier to the Venation government. This can be

This describes Othello as being proud of the services that he has done for his government. Also he is

Use Of Illusion And Hide Reality Plays A Heavy Role On...
The use of illusion to hide reality plays a heavy role in William Shakespeare's "Othello". Illusion is
used frequently throughout the play in relation to love, friendship and character personalities. Some
characters, especially Othello, cannot see through the illusion and assume what they see as reality.
Iago, however, uses this to his advantage by creating multiple illusions to manipulate the other
characters for power and revenge.
Iago is seen by most of the characters as an honest and trustworthy man who is always willing to
listen and give advice. Cassio, one of the characters who is fooled by the illusionary personality Iago
has created, says "I never knew/ a Florentine more kind and honest" (III.i.38–39). The audience
however knows that this is not the case, since at the beginning he says "I am not what I am" (I.i.62),
meaning that he has created an illusion of himself to fool others into believing he is trustworthy.
Iago states "I follow him to serve my turn upon him" (I.i.39), meaning that he only pretends to be
loyal to Othello, acting as a good servant so that when the opportunity arises, Othello will not
suspect him of sabotaging his marriage. Throughout the entire play, he pretends to be Othello's
friend, feigning reluctance in voicing his suspicions about an affair between Desdemona and Cassio.
He gains Othello's trust by being a good friend who is honest enough to tell him such horrible news.

lack of regard towards his men. Hamlet threatens death to Marcellus and Horatio by not letting him

his low points and are, in most cases, the other side of Bipolar 1 Disorder. During his to be or not to

How Does Othello Change Throughout The Play
Shakespeare prided himself on being a writer for the people. Authors during his time were more
"sophisticated" and their plays never seemed to translate to a larger audience. Plays were perceived
as something only the wealthy and elite got to participate in. But Shakespeare changed all that when
began to include the public. He turned theater into something relatable with an emphasis on sex,
love, violence and a sort of crude humor. He made his characters real. They were ravished with
flaws and became naturally empathic as the play went on. To achieve this a certain basic human
psychology has to be applied. And though it did not have these labels yet, grit and mindset are things
that makes these characters so relatable. Grit is described ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Analysis Of The Play ' Othello '
The play "Othello", by William Shakespeare and film adaption by Oliver parker explores the idea of
how an individual's sense of identity affects their actions and how this can be manipulated to create
conflict. Shakespeare uses techniques such as soliloquies, dramatic irony, imagery, foreshadowing,
and symbolism to show us how tragedy occurs from counteracting to patriarchal rules and
stereotypes.
Identity is a very key, important thematic issue in William Shakespeare 's tragic play, "Othello".
Identity, or what may be better explained as a character 's public perception, is highly valued in the
Elizabethan Age in which Othello is set. There is a varying range between the characters in the
extent that how they are perceived in public is not how they behave in private or how they really are,
thus creating more than one identity per character. A character 's identity is the overall essence of
that character, however, in plays such as Shakespeare 's there must always be an element of tragic
flaw to the play thus creating conflict. The definition for conflict is "a state of open, often prolonged
fighting; a battle or war. Opposition between characters or forces in a work of drama or fiction,
especially opposition that motivates or shapes the action of the plot." There are many ways in which
this definition is represented in 'Othello'. The main conflicts in 'Othello' are between friends and
foes, Othello's inner conflict, and cultural and racial differences, which lead to

In Shakespeare's Othello, race is a concept that is only minimally explored. Characters in the play
assume that, since they are English, they are superior and foreign characters (like Othello the Moor)
are inferior. This is not questioned much at all, and in fact it is assumed outright that Othello is
indeed a lesser man because of his skin color and the ways in which characters like Iago and
Roderigo treat him. While an early modern audience would accept this concept without hesitation,
an audience of today's age is left to question whether Othello is actually acting out because of the
societal pressures, beliefs, and actions put upon him, or because he is inherently different as a person
who is not white. While Shakespeare seems to think ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of these insults are packed into only the first scene of the play–there are dozens more sprinkled
throughout, used commonly by Iago and Roderigo, most often behind Othello's back than to his
face. This ever–constant presence of racism when regarding Othello is proof of Iago's plot: to
degrade and insult and trick Othello into believing that he is subpar, and therefore trusting in Iago's
accusations of Desdemona's infidelity. But why does Iago despise Othello so much? The answer is
in the text, both explicitly and implicitly. When Roderigo mentions Othello in the opening scene,
Iago states that he is angered by the appointment of Othello as general, and the appointment of
Cassio as his officer. He states that "by the faith of man...I am worth no worse of a price" suggesting
that he believes he should have been honored with a similar military position (1.1.10–11). He goes
on then to suggest that Cassio is not a fit officer, as he is "a great arithmetician...a Florentine...that
never set a squadron in the field"–in short, Cassio is too theoretical and inexperienced to be of any
use as an officer (1.1.18–21). In addition to his jealousy of Othello's power, Iago must also be
jealous of Othello's wife Desdemona. While waking up her father Brabanzio to warn him of his
daughter's so–called treachery in marrying and

other characters to criticize his decisions. Believing Iago and Desdemona's fake affair contributes to
the irrational personality the readers believe he has, leaving them to question why exactly Othello
makes the unreasonable decisions he does. One of the first scenes of the play contains a discussion
between Iago and Roderigo about Othello's choices in who his right hand should be. It is
purposefully used by Shakespeare to begin the characterization of Othello. Without any direct words
or scenes involving Othello, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This triggers especially when someone is presenting obscurity towards you. It is clear to the readers
that Othello has this disorder. The behavior that his wife, Desdemona is portraying is in his eyes
extremely suspicious, even though she is truly doing nothing wrong. This represents what Kingham
and Gordon are referring to when they say "irrational thoughts." Othello is jealous of something that
is not even actually happening.
Othello and Desdemona's marriage appears to readers that it is unreasonable and controlled. Most
people inform their family and friends about being engaged and planning a wedding, however,
Othello and Desdemona eloped. Due to all his other decisions, this makes readers infer that this was
his irrational idea. Othello did not even think to forewarn Desdemona's father that they were
planning to get married, he was not even aware that they were engaged. Othello is extremely
controlling due to his morbid jealousy disorder and wanted to be in control of who to tell and when

Why Is Othello Black In The Play
In the play Othello I believe the character "Othello" should be played by a black man for many
reasons, One being in the play they describe Othello as a black in many different ways, most being
derogatory, Othello in the play we watch was a white man that painted himself black because they
didn't want a black actor on stage another reason is letting the character have an actor more true for
the part it would make no sense to have a black actor painted white for a play and vise versa.
Othello in the play was described as a black man mostly in derogatory terms such as "thick lips,
African horse, a noble brave man." The man is black in the book he should be in the acting play, it is
so incredibly offensive that they have a white person painted black, because they don't want to hire a
black man. They way I see it is if the whole play they talk about a black man wouldn't it make the
most sense to have the actor be a black man. I think regardless of the hate and discrimination of a
black actor the acting team should have swallowed their racist pride and let an African American
play ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They said in the video that the man who was white and painted himself black to be Othello would
take three hours getting ready trying to "act like a black man" how ridiculous does that sound? An
actor should not have to spend hours in a room trying to fit into a "black mans" persona. Would it
not make the most sense to hire a black man who doesn't have to act like a black guy. In London a
black man played Othello his name was Paul Robinson he played Othello part so well a reviewer
said "No white man should ever dare play the part again" this is proving even in the 1930s people
still believed the part was best portrayed with a black

The Dramatic Impact of Act 1 Scene 3 in Shakespeare's Othello and Its Importance to the Whole
Play
Othello is a tragic play by Shakespeare, set in Venice during the Elizabethan time. It portrays the
growth of unjustified jealousy in the noble protagonist, Othello, a Moor serving as a general in the
Venetian army. The innocent object of his jealousy is his wife, Desdemona. In this domestic tragedy,
Othello's evil lieutenant Iago draws him into mistaken jealousy in order to ruin him. Othello is
destroyed partly through his gullibility and willingness to trust Iago and partly through the
manipulations of this villain, who clearly enjoys the exercise of evildoing just as he hates the
spectacle of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main action that occurs at the beginning of this scene is the meeting between the Duke and the
senators of Venice, in the council chambers. Council meetings are usually held during the day; but
the fact that it is night time now, makes the audience think that the topic of this meeting is so
important that the council members cannot wait till it is morning to discuss it. This strategy used by
Shakespeare motivates the audience to focus on the scene.
The purpose of this meeting is to decide the future of one of the Venetian colonies, Cyprus. Cyprus
is a trading island, where merchants from all over the world come to trade and therefore Cyprus has
become the target of the Turkish fleet to conquer, as Turkey has an interest in Cyprus's wealth in this
meeting. It is to be decided what the Venetian's will do to protect their colony from the imminent
attack of the Turkish fleet. The Turks are non–Christians and therefore considered to be malevolent
during the era, and anybody who's not white and a Christian, were always associated with evil.
Shakespeare subtly introduces the theme of racial discrimination on the grounds of religiously.

A Play of Love Turned Bad: Shakespeare's Othello Essay
Shakespeare's famous play Othello is a play of love that has turned bad by the unfounded jealousy
of the protagonist character Othello. Arguably the contribution of Othello's susceptibility to
manipulation, his weaknesses and the manipulation of other characters tactics such as Iago each
contribute to the downfall of Othello. However, to the extent of which each is more significant
varies and this is what will be analysed in this essay.
Like many of Shakespeare's tragic plays each has to have a tragic hero. Each of these tragic heroes
would have a tragic flaw, they were all from a noble class and would each face their tragedy with
dignity. The ultimate flaw of each of these characters would vary in each of Shakespeare's plays;

This racist attitude exposes him to the racist predigest from Roderigo and Brabantio who refer to
him as an 'old black ram' and a 'thick–lip owe'. This contributes to the downfall of Othello as he
'self–destructively internalizes the prevailing racism' (Jyotsna Singh,2004) and is what sets the
tragedy in motion. The reason being that, Brabantio wouldn't have revolted against the marriage of
Othello and Desdemona if Othello wasn't a Moor and Rodrigo wouldn't have been motivated to
pursue his love for Desdemona if he didn't believe that the relationship between Othello and
Desdemona was unnatural. The most significant is that Iago plays on Othello's racial insecurities
constantly bringing them to the surface and also acting as a primary cause for Iagos' destruction of
Othello.
Othellos' relationship with Desdemona and Iago also plays a vital part to the downfall of Othello.
Othello and Desdemona are portrayed as two great innocents who are romantically in love but with
love being the most powerful emotion this ironically leads to vulnerability. Iago, Othellos' lieutenant
armour and a character full of spite and jealousy, uses this vulnerability to turn this romance into a
profane love that ends in disaster.
From the start of the play the friction between Iago and Othello was apparent because in Act 1 Scene
1 Othello promoted Cassio, a promotion which infuriated Iago as Iago had pleaded lieutenancy. This
is shown when Iago says "In personal suit

Othello Movie Vs Play
To be honest, I have never read Shakespeare's work before. I also am not a big fan of Dramas or
love stories. Othello has all of this, but it does also have a very suspenseful and dark side, which
kept me interested. Shakespeare's Othello is story that takes place in the 1600's and is centers around
four main characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his wife, Desdemona, his
lieutenant Cassio and his trusted ensign, Iago. I found Othello to be a great story, play and movie
because it encompasses all of the things we all experience in life such as: racism, love, jealousy and
betrayal. As I read Othello, I found that once I started reading, I didn't want to stop. I won't lie, I did
find the dialog challenging to follow at times. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He has a way of making you feel that you are really watching people from that time. I also seen a lot
of the passion as Iago in him. When I read the play, I feel Kenneth Branagh nailed Iago's image that
I read in the play. In the play, Iago has to be two–faced all the time. He shows one side of him to one
person, and another side to another. In the film, Iago works very hard to keep up his appearance with
all the different characters. No character sees more than one side of him, and his plots are kept to
himself. I think the role of Iago was a tough one to play because of the ability to make people truly
believe how convening he was, but Branagh did a great job. I also noticed that when Othello was
speaking, his facial reactions would visibly change when Othello looked the other way. It was
incredible how quickly the change from an evil expression to a loving and loyal expression was
made. In one scene, Iago and Othello are hugging, and Iago's face reflects contempt as soon as his
face is beside Othello's face. This is another reason why I thought the movie brought more of the
emotions out in me. I could actually see the facial reactions as well as eh facial reactions of my kids
when they watched the movie with

Othello Movie Vs Play

  • 1. Othello Movie Vs Play There are many differences and similarities between the Othello play and the 1995 movie directed by Oliver Parker, although the setting, plot and characters remain the same. Parker does make some changes in other ways, and those changes are what offer some of the differences between the two. Some of the differences between the film and play are: the different interpretations of lago; the use of imaginary sequences; and the fact that the movie has cut an abundant amount of the text. The first is perhaps of most significance. Rather than changing the story the director successfully uses his cinematic tools to deliver the complexity of emotion and conflict felt by both Othello and Iago. The Director also uses Othello's dreams to make Othello's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The scene features Othello and Desdemona kissing which builds upon the dramatic passion they share for each other. You can infer by Othello's demeanor that he is confident and proud of his actions and also Iago's feelings toward Othello are very comparable to the play. When Iago states, "I hate the Moor" it is obvious that he does not like Othello, but he says that when he is alone, so only the audience knows of his hatred for Othello. Contrariwise, in the play's first scene Roderigo states, "Thou toldst me thou didst hold him in they hate" and Iago replies "Despise me if I do not" (Othello. 1.1). Because this is not in the film the director used a different strategy to reveal Iagos strategy to destroy Othello by using Chess pieces. Parker uses mysterious lighting and a fireplace to give the audience a feeling of mischievousness while Iago situates the Black King and White Queen next to each other, then he inserts a white knight in between, which is clearly representative of him. The film audience feels Iago's split personality much easier than the play due to the facial expressions enhanced by camera angles, and music. He seems to be everyone's friend, and even Othello calls him "Honest Iago". Othello is consistently seen as a military hero, honorable and noble, so when he is overwhelmed by weakness it puts the ... • 3. William Shakespeare 's Play Othello Vonelle Robertson Professor Wells Com 2 December 3rd, 2014 Drama Research Paper Shakespeare's Play Othello is one of the more notable plays produced during his playwright tenure, the play starts off with Othello who is a moor but the general of the Venetian Army. In this particular play Shakespeare placed several different themes throughout the play but two of the main themes were Love and Race. Othello is strong, confident man he is the head of one the most prestigious armies in all Europe. But with all that success Othello had envious people watching gain all this success, one of the people's name is Iago who. The straw that finally broke the camel's back is when Othello eloped with the beautiful Desdemona daughter of Venetian senator Brabantio. She disappoints her father by having wed the moor Othello and he disowns her for having done such a deed. Brabantio even said to Othello that Desdemona would betray him just like she betrayed her father. In fact, being that Othello was from a foreign land and he was dark skinned this angered Iago even more to the point that he concocted an elaborate story to break up Desdemona and Othello. Iago manipulated Othello into believing that his sweet, loving was an adulteress and has lain with none other than Michael Cassio. Othello has great love for Desdemona so when he hears this news he becomes enraged. Through all the adversity he has faced for marrying Desdemona, he was even accused by Brabantio of using trickery because he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Racism And Racism In Othello Race plays an important role in William Shakespeare's Othello: an intense tragedy of an admired military general, who is driven to kill his wife and himself out of jealously. Othello is of Black African descent, which separates him from many in his Venetian world. Throughout the play, Othello's race is seen as a negative aspect of his character, which is used by the antagonist, Iago, as a weak point to initiate chaos. The play depicts racism and uses the influence of radicalized perspective to create a tragedy. Shakespeare created Othello to be a great leader, a powerful and noble man, to defy Venetian societal views. He did so effectively through the development of varied interpersonal relationships, and how racism effects each of them. When Othello is first introduced into the play, the audience knows that he is a well–respected leader. As the play continues, racist and non–racist views become quite evident, which eventually effect the actions and ways Othello sees himself. Othello's wife, Desdemona, is a young Caucasian woman, who recognizes Othello for his true self, not his race. She admires the "dangers that [he] had passed" (1.3.193. Shakespeare, William. Othello), and his abilities as a valiant leader. Desdemona knows that her inter–racial marriage is not common, or widely approved of, yet she continues to "trumpet to the world" (1.3.285. Shakespeare, Othello) her love for him. Her unwavering devotion to Othello is a critical detail because she stays true to her feelings in a world where she is surrounded by discrimination towards Othello. Before Iago approaches Desdemona's father, Brabantio, about their marriage, Othello expresses that "[Desdemona's] father loved [him]" (1.3.149. Shakespeare, Othello), and often invited him into their home (1.3.149. Shakespeare, Othello). These examples of characters from the play and their non–racist views of Othello prove that Othello is a play that illustrates racism, not a play meant to offend and segregate against people of colour. Many critics of Othello have suggested that Shakespeare wrote a racist play, and that Shakespeare himself wanted to convince others that even a black man in Venetian society will eventually revert to his violent and animal–like ways ... • 7. Sympathy For Othello In Shakespeare's Play The play Othello, written by William Shakespeare, can spark numerous thoughts and interpretations that differ between individuals based on the point of view of each particular character. For example, one of the main characters, Othello, endures a considerable amount of complications and events that lead to his downfall, which he concludes with a final speech. In T.S. Eliot's essay called "Shakespeare and the Stoicism of Seneca," the analyzation of the context suggests that Othello's words and explanations are simply making the audience think about himself, rather than the horrific actions that he performed. By examining the language, the tone, and the context of Othello's final speech, I believe that Othello is partly drawing sympathy for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In agreeance to Eliot's analysis of Othello, Othello may center the last half of his final speech in hopes for sympathy of his audience. Othello directly states that he got caught up in the tricks and manipulations of Iago and others (V, ii, 364). Othello also speaks of the change that the events that occurred and the actions that he carried out had on him. By stating that he was not an emotional man, but then who cried a lot, Othello is suggesting to his audience that the change of his manhood resulted from the manipulations that Iago forced upon him and the crime that he committed regarding Desdemona (V, ii, 368–369). At the end of Othello's final speech, Othello describes an event that he endured while at war to suggest to the audience the way in which he would conclude the speech by killing himself. In Aleppo, he once saw a Turk beating a Venetian, to which he responded by grabbing the Turk and hitting him (V, ii, 368–372). Othello then proceeds to kill himself in front of his audience in the exact manner that he killed the Turk who was beating a Venetian, which draws sympathy from the Venetians and other members of his ... In the beginning of the play, Othello is seen as content with his new bride: "For know, Iago, But that I love the gentle Desdemona" (1.2.24–25). As the play progresses, and Iago's plan culminates, Othello's good fortune begins to turn. After Othello returns from war at sea with the Turks, his fortune begins a downward spiral. Shakespeare often focuses his plays on human nature as well as fate, which Othello's fate ended in the tragic ending due to his reversal of fortune once the claims against Desdemona begin. Oliver Parker's 1995 interpretation of Shakespeare's 1600's timeless classic Othello presents a differing construction of Othello from the original play, achieved through uses of a plethora of film devices. Both the play and the film masterfully spin a tale of romance, tragedy and death telling the fall of glory of Othello due to the acts of his ensign Iago, albeit with several differences in the presentation. Both Shakespeare and Parker explore themes of jealousy, power, and racism through the key characters of Othello and Iago. Adapting a written play into a live action film necessarily requires an interpretation of the original work to determine how it should be portrayed in the new medium. While there are no "wrong" interpretations, some take greater creative license where others more closely convey the original. Numerous factors affect this authenticity, but three of the most crucial are plot, characters, and overall spectacle. Evaluating these elements in Orson Welles' 1952 and Janet Suzman's 1988 adaptations of William Shakespeare's tragedy Othello provides an analysis of the extent to which these two films resemble the original. • 17. Essay Othello and Iago in William Shakespeare's Play Othello and Iago in William Shakespeare's Play Othello, the main character in the play is married to Desdemona. At the start of the play Othello is seen as evil and bad by all the other characters and the audience. Brobantio (Desdemona's father), dislikes Othello very much at the start of the play. This is because Othello married Desdemona without her father's consent and Brobantio thinks Othello has used black magic to win Desdemona's love. Whereas, this isn't the case, Othello married Desdemona because he loved her and she loved him. Also, in the time period the play is set, women were never seen as very important people in society and they were seen as the property of men. Usually their husband ... This remark clears his name for marrying Desdemona. The Duke and Brobantio become convinced that Othello loves Desdemona enough, to set Othello free, without facing any serious charges. We also learn, Othello is called on business to Cyprus and he has been "most hotly called for", in the court case. In other words, Othello has been called to Cyprus because he is a very important soldier. Othello takes Desdemona to Cyprus with him. This shows Othello is a kind and honest man because he is kind enough to take his wife with him, not to leave her behind like many men would have. On the other hand, however, the audience see that Iago is evil and bad, the first time they meet him, whereas, all the characters see him as honest and good at the start of the play. Roderigo is easily tricked into thinking Iago is going to help get him and Desdemona together, (even though Desdemona is already married), if he keeps paying Iago to help. Iago is just conning Roderigo out of money; the audience can see that Iago is evil and bad here but the character, Roderigo, doesn't. • 19. Compare And Contrast Othello Play And Movie Shakespeare was somewhat difficult for me and was probably for most high school students. Many high school students will study some form of Shakespeare, play or sonnet in high school English. A lot of students don't know anything about him, so it wouldn't hurt to teach them about Shakespeare. Adaptations are m because they can take something original and make changes so that can be better understand. In this essay, I will compare and contrast characters and settings from the graphic novel and the movie "O", to help decide which adaptation is better for high school students. Both adaptations use Desdemona's bedroom as the place where Othello takes Desdemona's/Desi's life because he was angry and jealous believing Iago's lies that she cheated on him. Iago/ Hugo also kills his wife/girlfriend, Emilia/Emily in the same bedroom because she started telling Othello/O the truth about Iago's/Hugo's dishonesty. Desdemona's bedroom is an important place because it shows the love they have for each other. The bedroom is supposed to be a place where they show an intimacy and feel comfortable, but both couples turn it into a place of death, sadness, and regret. At the same time, the setting was very different from both the movie and novel. In the graphic novel, it took place in Venice then moved to Cyprus. In the movie, their school was like Venice but then moved to the basketball court that'was supposed to be Cyprus for "war". Also, in the graphic novel mostly the entire story took place at the palace where Othello lived. It changed from time to time but the story was mostly in the palace. The Play ' Lysistrata ' And ' Othello ' When reading Lysistrata and Ajax I noticed that there are some differences and similarities in both plays, first I would like to start off with Lysistrata. In Lysistrata we can see that in Lysistrata it talks about marriage and sex how it is affected by war , it demonstrates the perspective what the women go through when the men are away. It demonstrates the anger and frustration the wives have towards their husbands when they are gone, they refuse to have sex with their husbands until they agree to sign a peace treaty in order to stop the war. If we really think about it, a solider is deployed at weeks, months, maybe even years at a time. They see things that we cannot even begin to comprehend, they experience things we cannot imagine. It is very hard to get over these things that happen. These two plays do an excellent job at demonstrating the effects on both sides of a marriage. Iago is motivated by his own personal gains, and uses people as pawns to help achieve his own goals. Iago is able to manipulate people easily by observing each person carefully and exploiting their weaknesses. In Act 1 Iago manipulates Roderigo by convincing him that he is going to help him win Desdemona over; Iago also convinces Othello that he is trustworthy and his loyal standard–bearer, but in fact Iago is only using their misplaced trust to help himself. In the first scene we learn that Iago dislikes Othello because he made Cassio his lieutenant, although he is unexperienced in battling, even though "three great ones of the city in personal suit [asked Othello] to make [Iago] his lieutenant" (Act 1, Scene 1, Line 8–9). This may not be the only reason, however, because "it is thought abroad that 'twixt [his] sheets [Othello has] done [Iago's] office", (Act 1, Scene 3, Line 355– 356), meaning that it was rumored that Othello and Iago's wife had slept together. Even though it was only a rumor Iago "will do, as if for surety", (Act 1, Scene 3, Line 360), which shows how driven Iago is when it comes to his plot against Othello. Through the texts by composers William Shakespeare and Tim Blake nelson and their texts Othello and the late 20th century contemporary film O, the key values of trust, honesty and loyalty are explored with contextual influences being reflected. The values are explored with the use of thematic development of the key issues jealousy and appearance vs reality and the use of dramatic devices in Othello and cinematic techniques in O. Shakespeare's accurate representation explored these values in an Elizabethan context where the values of loyalty, honour and fidelity were apparent. • 31. Shakespeare's Play, Othello, is More than a Tragedy The audience can perceive Shakespeare's play "Othello" as just a tragic play of a jealous man in the early 1600s thinking that his wife is cheating on him with another man. It could be just that, however it could be something much deeper. Many argue that the main character Othello may have had a Oedipal Complex. This is a psychoanalytical theory introduced by Sigmund Freud in 1899. It is the idea that one has a desire for sexual involvement with the parent of the opposite sex and a sense of rivalry with the parent of the same–sex. The term is derived from a hero of a Greek legend named Oedipus who unknowingly killed his father and married his mother. Connections can be made to this complex through the relationship between Othello and his wife Desdemona. Throughout Shakespeare's play "Othello", the audience can take notice of the Oedipal complex in Othello by the handkerchief being a reflection of his feeling for his mother. The handkerchief patterned with strawberries given to Desdemona as a token of love explains Othello's attachment to his mother. He tells Desdemona that it was given to him by his mother and it would ensure the spouse's love when kept, but if lost, one would lose the love too. This is because he applied the Poetics' guidelines to complex plot, the tragic hero, and the establishment of pity, fear, and catharsis of the audience's emotions. The complex plot follows Othello and his transformation from nobleman to monster through the exploitation of his tragic flaw. Such as the handkerchief given to Desdemona by Othello, it is symbol of love and trust for Othello, and it going "missing" angers Othello. • 43. Description Of The Play In Othello Othello: A 17th century soap The play Othello was written by William Shakespeare and first performed in 1604. It tells the story of a group of people who are entangled in a complex web of relationships and try to work out the dynamics of their tiny society. This brings forth a load of drama that plays directly into hands of the villain of the story: Iago. He carries a huge grudge against the main character: Othello. The storyline in this play is so dramatic and complicated it can be compared to a television–soap nowadays. The main characteristic of a soap is: 'an emphasis on family life, personal relationships, sexual dramas, emotional and moral conflict. In my opinion the setting of the play, the relationships within and Iago's role contribute to making Othello 17th century television–soap. First of all, the setting of Othello greatly contributes to the dramatic storyline. In a modern soap, the circumstances force the characters to face each other. It seems this hate is mostly used to give Iago a motive to come up with a revenge plot and thereby create an interesting story. This is due to the fact that the author's intent of his own story is much more intriguing and familiar to its readers than just another film version. However, some versions portray the story better than others. Hollywood seems to have taken up the responsibility of creating complicated and compelling characters on screen. Unfortunately, doing so can easily take away a story's rich, necessary detail. For instance, Shakespeare's Othello has a few different movie versions of his story. Both movies, the 1990 version by Trevor Nunn and the 1995 version by Oliver Parker, are great productions carried by strong casts. However, there are areas in which the movie and the play differ. These differences tend to interpret the film in a different way compared to what Shakespeare intended. The film portrayals of Shakespeare's Othello by Parker and the other by Nunn both display the character of Desdemona in very different ways. She always jumped into the scene with excitement in her voice when she spoke. Nunn also made it obvious that Desdemona's character is very naive, just like a pure child would be. Sana Thomas Jealousy and Deception are both continuous themes running through out Shakespeare's Othello. Indeed, it is jealousy that provides the fuel for the plot and deception that leads to the classic downfall of the 'hero' as is common in Shakespeare tragedies. However, it is a theme of hate that the play opens. It is a hate of inveterate anger. It is a hate that is bound up with envy hanging on a strained thread waiting to snap. In The Tragedy of Othello, William Shakespeare tells the tale of the "noble Moor" whose honour and innocence bring about his downfall. Shakespeare writes of the power of jealousy, ... The deception begins when he blatantly lies to Brabantio, telling him that Othello has bewitched his daughter into marrying him: "an old black ram Is tupping your white ewe (1.1.89)". The language Iago uses to address Brabantio here is vulgar and discourteous. The fact that he takes no heed that Brabantio is of a higher status than him is intended to provoke and aggravate him, so that he will impart his rage when confronting Othello. This confirms the audience's suspicion of Iago being cold, conniving and calculated. As part of the audience, I believe that the handkerchief introduced in Act 3 symbolizes deceit for which it is used. It is this handkerchief Othello had given Desdemona as a wedding present and a token of the couple's eternal fidelity that acts as a catalyst to the unpleasant and poignant changes in the play: the "napkin is too little (3.3.287)". Othello demands "ocular proof (3.3.360)" from Iago that his wife Desdemona was committing adultery with Cassio: "Villain, be sure to prove my love a whore (3.3.360)", Does Othello's insistence on proof suggest that this jealous husband is a nobler man? Iago must only deceive Othello by telling him that the handkerchief he so lovingly gave his wife is not in his wife's possession but in Cassio's: "a hankerchief/did I see Cassio wipe his beard with (3.3.440)."The fact that she lost it inadvertently and was unable to produce it when Othello demanded her to "fetch ... Jealousy is described throughout the play as a monstrous emotion or more specifically, a "green–eyed monster". This becomes increasingly more destructive and intense. However, it's at the end of the play that Othello commits extreme actions because his jealousy has caused him to believe everything is true. Jealousy here is harnessed as a weapon, a weapon made so lethal because its victim ultimately destroys himself and others around him. It is interesting that Iago uses jealousy against Othello, as jealousy is likely the source of Iago's hatred in the first place. In Othello, jealousy takes many forms, from sexual suspicion to professional competition, but it is, in all cases, destructive. However, this jealousy was not originally prominent Othello, but was rather developed through Iago's numerous plans of destruction, which is understood through Othello's change in personality and actions taken. Cassio is being described by Iago as "mere prattle without practice, is all his soldier ship". These words show that Cassio does not have the necessary experience in order to be Othello's lieutenant. Illusion is used frequently throughout the play in relation to love, friendship and character personalities. Some characters, especially Othello, cannot see through the illusion and assume what they see as reality. Iago, however, uses this to his advantage by creating multiple illusions to manipulate the other characters for power and revenge. Iago is seen by most of the characters as an honest and trustworthy man who is always willing to listen and give advice. Cassio, one of the characters who is fooled by the illusionary personality Iago has created, says "I never knew/ a Florentine more kind and honest" (III.i.38–39). The audience however knows that this is not the case, since at the beginning he says "I am not what I am" (I.i.62), meaning that he has created an illusion of himself to fool others into believing he is trustworthy. • 66. Analysis Of The Play ' Othello ' The play "Othello", by William Shakespeare and film adaption by Oliver parker explores the idea of how an individual's sense of identity affects their actions and how this can be manipulated to create conflict. Shakespeare uses techniques such as soliloquies, dramatic irony, imagery, foreshadowing, and symbolism to show us how tragedy occurs from counteracting to patriarchal rules and stereotypes. Identity is a very key, important thematic issue in William Shakespeare 's tragic play, "Othello". Identity, or what may be better explained as a character 's public perception, is highly valued in the Elizabethan Age in which Othello is set. There is a varying range between the characters in the extent that how they are perceived in public is not how they behave in private or how they really are, thus creating more than one identity per character. A character 's identity is the overall essence of that character, however, in plays such as Shakespeare 's there must always be an element of tragic flaw to the play thus creating conflict. The definition for conflict is "a state of open, often prolonged fighting; a battle or war. Opposition between characters or forces in a work of drama or fiction, especially opposition that motivates or shapes the action of the plot." There are many ways in which this definition is represented in 'Othello'. The main conflicts in 'Othello' are between friends and foes, Othello's inner conflict, and cultural and racial differences, which lead to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Characters in the play assume that, since they are English, they are superior and foreign characters (like Othello the Moor) are inferior. This is not questioned much at all, and in fact it is assumed outright that Othello is indeed a lesser man because of his skin color and the ways in which characters like Iago and Roderigo treat him. While an early modern audience would accept this concept without hesitation, an audience of today's age is left to question whether Othello is actually acting out because of the societal pressures, beliefs, and actions put upon him, or because he is inherently different as a person who is not white. But why does Iago despise Othello so much? The answer is in the text, both explicitly and implicitly. When Roderigo mentions Othello in the opening scene, Iago states that he is angered by the appointment of Othello as general, and the appointment of Cassio as his officer. He states that "by the faith of man...I am worth no worse of a price" suggesting that he believes he should have been honored with a similar military position (1.1.10–11). He goes on then to suggest that Cassio is not a fit officer, as he is "a great arithmetician...a Florentine...that never set a squadron in the field"–in short, Cassio is too theoretical and inexperienced to be of any use as an officer (1.1.18–21). This contributes to the downfall of Othello as he 'self–destructively internalizes the prevailing racism' (Jyotsna Singh,2004) and is what sets the tragedy in motion. The reason being that, Brabantio wouldn't have revolted against the marriage of Othello and Desdemona if Othello wasn't a Moor and Rodrigo wouldn't have been motivated to pursue his love for Desdemona if he didn't believe that the relationship between Othello and Desdemona was unnatural. The most significant is that Iago plays on Othello's racial insecurities constantly bringing them to the surface and also acting as a primary cause for Iagos' destruction of Othello. Othellos' relationship with Desdemona and Iago also plays a vital part to the downfall of Othello. Othello and Desdemona are portrayed as two great innocents who are romantically in love but with love being the most powerful emotion this ironically leads to vulnerability. Iago, Othellos' lieutenant armour and a character full of spite and jealousy, uses this vulnerability to turn this romance into a profane love that ends in disaster. Othello has all of this, but it does also have a very suspenseful and dark side, which kept me interested. Shakespeare's Othello is story that takes place in the 1600's and is centers around four main characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his wife, Desdemona, his lieutenant Cassio and his trusted ensign, Iago. I found Othello to be a great story, play and movie because it encompasses all of the things we all experience in life such as: racism, love, jealousy and betrayal. As I read Othello, I found that once I started reading, I didn't want to stop. I won't lie, I did find the dialog challenging to follow at times. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He has a way of making you feel that you are really watching people from that time. I also seen a lot of the passion as Iago in him. When I read the play, I feel Kenneth Branagh nailed Iago's image that I read in the play. In the play, Iago has to be two–faced all the time. He shows one side of him to one person, and another side to another. In the film, Iago works very hard to keep up his appearance with all the different characters. No character sees more than one side of him, and his plots are kept to himself. I think the role of Iago was a tough one to play because of the ability to make people truly believe how convening he was, but Branagh did a great job. I also noticed that when Othello was speaking, his facial reactions would visibly change when Othello looked the other way. It was incredible how quickly the change from an evil expression to a loving and loyal expression was made. In one scene, Iago and Othello are hugging, and Iago's face reflects contempt as soon as his face is beside Othello's face. This is another reason why I thought the movie brought more of the emotions out in me. I could actually see the facial reactions as well as eh facial reactions of my kids when they watched the movie with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
