The musical genre, reggae, was originally coined in the 1960s. Derived from rege–rege – Jamaican
for "rags or ragged clothing" – the genre was used to describe the raggedy music style found in
Jamaica at the time. Reggae incorporates the traditional Jamaican music such as mento and ska,
rhythm & blues, and rocksteady. Ska characteristics such as the walking bass line of the guitar and
piano off–beats are used in reggae. However, ska is much faster than reggae, so the use of
rocksteady in the genre slows the ska tempo. Reggae songs are heavily backbeated, meaning the
music has highly emphasized second and fourth beats; this style is typically found in African–based
musical genres. In reggae's foundation, artists typically wrote of love, but the seventies foresaw the
use of socio–political and religious lyrics. To English listeners, reggae lyrics are nearly
incomprehensible. For example, "Jah" means God, and "Ganga" is the Jamaican slang term for
marijuana, a medical herb Rastafarians smoked to feel closer to God. Since those not of this faith do
not understand the importance of marijuana, reggae lyrics often get misinterpreted as "getting high."
Never the less, reggae music first rose to international acclaim in the 1970s following the release of

Jamaica's International Debt Crisis
Jamaica's economy has always been subject to forces beyond its control. Even after the country
gained its independence in 1962 it has remained clear that Jamaica's economic policies have been
heavily coerced by western powers. This was the situation in of which, Michael Manley and the
Peoples National Party (PNP) attempted to undo. However, despite a brief flirtation with social–
democratic reform in the mid–1970s, Jamaica's international debt proved to be too heavy a burden
for Manley and the PNP to manage. This resulted in neoliberal backlash in 1980 led by Edward
Seaga and the Jamaican Labour Party, who quickly realized that their neoliberal policies actually
exacerbated the problem. Therefore the guiding determinant of Jamaican economic policy–making
post–1970 seemed to be the need to manage the public debt within the existing socio–economic
system, in a manner that is responsive to the needs of the public. The solution to the problem lies in
a series of policy reforms designed to increase the productive capacity of the region, the
empowerment of the youth through education, and the unification of the people through the notion
of collective struggle. Therefore, the future of Jamaica lies in systemically instilling nationalist
sentiment in its people in hopes of coercing both economic and societal change.

At times, a hero may be revealed right through the glass, or it may be necessary to investigate deep
down to find the true identity of a hero. In Dr. Seuss 's famous story The Lorax, The old, mysterious
Once–ler is the hero because of his evolution past keeping the treasured land with the Truffula Trees
undisclosed, consequently establishing a realization of the inadequate oversight of the actions
presented in the story, formulates an effective solution to a problem that he created as an act of
redemption. The Once–ler displays deep acts of heroism, which is why he is considered the hero of
the text.
The old, reserved Once–ler begins to display acts of heroism even in the first blossoms of the
children's tale. This implies that the Once–ler, who according to the narrator "lurks in his Lerkim",
rarely shares his the story of how the Lorax traveled far away. The text states that the Once–ler only
tells the story on a "special dank midnights in August". He then managed to tell the depressing story
of the termination of the Truffula Trees to the innocent child with relative ease. This means that the
Once–ler has evolved from the incident that he instigated and is willing to convey the aspects of life
that he does not want to recall. It is extremely challenging to visualize a negative part of life that

actions. With that being said, he received many awards and honors recognizing him as a legend.
Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945 and grew up in a mostly rural community in the
mountains called Nine Miles. Many of the residents of Nine Miles acquired customs from their
African ancestry such as story telling to share their past and traditions. When Bob was just getting
into his teen years he moved from St. Ann to Jamaica's capital and settled in Kingston vicinity of
Trench Town. Trench Town was a low– income community where Bob had to learn to protect
himself from men that were not so nice. He was given the nickname "Tuff Gong" from his decent

Although Trench Town was mostly poverty and full of street fighting, it was a culturally rich

Garvey was important to the Rastafarian movement for three reasons: he founded the Universal
Negro Improvement Association (UNIA); he founded a steam ship company called the Black Star
Line; and he promoted the "Back – to Africa" movement. Although in his life time Garvey didn't
accomplish many practical things, he is still consider to be a hero among the Rastafarians.
In 1917, a year after Marcus Garvey arrived in the United States of America he founded the
Universal Negro Improvement Association (Davis 66). The origin of the UNIA was "...originally as
a fraternal organization, later remolding it to become the organized vehicle for the redemption of
blacks through repatriation to Africa" (Davis 66). When Garvey was in New York he started a
newspaper called "The Negro World." Garvey's motto for his newspaper is "One Aim, One God,
One Deststst ack in the United States. The years to follow Garvey got convicted for mail fraud and
tax evasion, and sent to a federal prison in 1925 (Davis 68). Garvey spent two years in jail and them
was deported to Panama. This meant that the S.S. Frederick Douglass went bankrupt and the "Back
– to – Africa" movement was over. Garvey once out of jail continued on trying to spread the UNIA
until his death in 1940. Marcus Garvey died of pneumonia in England (Davis 69).

election. This move however resulted in an attempt to end Marley's life.
On the evening of December 3, a number of gunmen arrived at Bob's house on 56 Hope Road and

Nixon worked hard for all the goals he reached, but as it is emphasized, Nixon's major failure
brought his reputation to the dumps. We can see that Elovitz wanted readers to see how one man can
achieve so much for so long, then lose everything because of one event. In Edward D. Berkowitz's

and Cons of Hush Money", Dean said "it would take one million dollars" to pay off the five men,

an attempt to find information about them that he could leak to the press. He used the Secret Service

David Fincher's film, Fight Club (1999), puts the internal struggles for meaning that heterosexual
white men experience within today's society into motion. Charles Guignon examines the film's
violent and sexual factors as well as how they pose a meaningful appeal to violence, primarily, in
the young men of our society. Moreover, the film "stirs up a fascination with violence that many of
us may feel, an attraction to inflicting pain and experiencing pain ourselves (35)." Through concepts
of absent fathers, consumerism and an aimless being, Fight Club platforms a provocative view on
how men in modern society have lost their identity through emasculation and the extremely
disturbing activities they combat in order to find it again. Fight Club asserts the path to finding one's
meaning is not simple and, in turn, develops into a despairing and inconclusive struggle. The
excessive consumerism in the film signifies a sign of emotional emptiness. The film provides the
viewer extensive knowledge on contemporary American society by raising important questions
about the embraced values in that society. With the struggle for finding meaning and the prevalent
masculine identity crisis manifested in Fight Club, why do some men's daily lives fail to satisfy

Edward Bloom was a story teller. He would tell elaborate stories to his son since he was born. Not
only were the stories exciting, they were told to bring life and excitement into Edwards life.
Growing up, William enjoyed his father's stories. As time goes on, the stories began to become more
and more uneventful and less entertaining. This was because William has heard the same stories his
whole life. He did not know what was true and what was fake. On his death bed, Edward reconnects
with William by getting him to see that he was not lying his whole life, just telling his life story in a
much more interesting way. Yes, some details were changed but that does not mean they were all
lies. William just did not see that until the end.
Big fish tells a story of adventure, love, life and death. Edward loved his family most of all. He let
you know many time throughout the film. What stuck out the most to me was when he finished
remodeling Jennifer's house. Jen came on to him. The love he had for his wife truly showed through
when he rejected her affection. This shows, 'how that the head of the family loves more than
anything: his wife and only son' (Vega). At a young age, Will didn't have the relationship with his
father that he wanted. This was because Edward was often gone for periods of time, traveling and

another just for fun, later on down the line others saw there selves drawn to the adrenalin and
excitement of the concept to release their anger. This is how fight club began.
But where the story began to take a turn was when Marla, the woman that he met in the support

Using Edward as the mockingbird, all his intentions are is to satisfy his loved ones, preferably Kim
but when he is arrested due to a failed robbery attempt which was set up by Kim's boyfriend,

This was the first time a reggae band had ever had access to premium recording facility. They

Even though there were some major bumps in the road for these men, they all had one goal in mind

Personal Journal: My Musical Interests
The music in my Wordle reflects well the type of music I like as I think they show my varied
interests. I don't really listen to any local music which is sometimes something of a regret. While I
was attending a wedding there was an amazing jazz singer there. I thought her music was just
outstanding. But I forgot to get her name and now I can't find any music by her. Another time I was
at a restaurant and there was a great Jazz band there. But again I forgot to get any names and when I
thought to call and ask no one at the restaurant remembered who I was talking about. So those were
regretful missed opportunities to expand the music I listen to as I don't really listen to jazz. Some of
the international music that I listen to is Irish folk music such as the Dubliners, Paul Brady, and the
Clancy Brothers. Avicii is a Swedish artist who has a few songs that I enjoy. But all in all there is not
too much international music that I listen too.
The music that I listen to comes from many genres. For example Bon Iver who are an indi folk
group. In particular I like the song "Skinny Love" by them. A young English musician called Birdy
has a cover of that Bon Iver song that I enjoy as well. I also enjoy Irish Folk music. "Arthur
McBrid"e was the example I used for the Wordle. It tell the story of two fine Irish lads who decide
not to join the Kings Army.

Robert Nesta Marley, commonly known as "Bob Marley", was born on February 6, 1945 in St.
Ann's, Jamaica. Marley was son of a white man named Norval Marley and black lady named Cedilla
Marley Boker. Due to Marley being mixed he was always rejected growing up (MacDonald). Many
people disliked him due to his rastafarian ways of life. Bob Marley has differing views, society's
naive perception that all he does is smoke marijuana and what is really true he was an inspirational
musician that wanted to unite the world. As commonly known Bob Marley was a rastafarian, being a
rastafarian and having dread locks meant that one voweled not to brush or cut their hair. Bob Marley
took his dreadlocks as his identity. Also being a rastafarian meant living a certain way, the way one
ate, treated other people, and smoking marijuana was part of their religion not just to get high. In the
Marley Documentary, Bob Marley says " Christ promised to mankind that him will return within
2000 years and when him return him will be the king of kings through the lineage of king Solomon
and king David now we look there to see who is this one man , Haile Selassie I" stating that they
believed the Emperor of Ethiopia was Christ returning. Rastafari was also taken from his name, he
was called Ras Tafari (MacDonald). Bob Marley's music career started off with the Wailing Wailers

which caused the group to fade away.

Along with this, we learn how paranoia affects individuals and the publishing process. The film also
gives us some insight on how American institutions such as newspapers and the government are
viewed. Some opinions vary, due to paranoia or belief in a conspiracy. The film covers the major
political scandal known as Watergate, and the subsequent investigation and reporting through Bob
Woodward and Carl Bernstein.
The Watergate break–in happened on June 17, 1972. The purpose of the break in was to the bug the

The CREEP employees stay quiet out of fear from their superiors. If someone speaks out, the higher
ups have the power to ruin someone 's career and make their life difficult. This is seen in the case of
Hugh Sloan. He was the treasurer for CREEP and quits his job for not wanting to be a part of the
scandal. The higher ups turn him in the fallout guy and his reputation is ruined. Hugh claimed that it
is difficult to find another job because he is in the press too much. This can happen to other
employees and is one of the reasons they stay quiet. The employees may also fear for their life.
Deep Throat is an extremely paranoid character, who acts as an anonymous informant. At first he
refuses to meet with Bob unless he meets his terms. If Bob wants to meet, he must put a red flag in a
pot on his balcony. If Deep Throat wants to talk, he would leave a note on page twenty of Bob's
newspaper. Deep Throat won't give information, but guide the journalists on the right path. Near the
end of the film Deep Throat warns Bob and Carl that their lives are at risk. He shares all his
knowledge about the cases and reveals that people are under surveillance. With everything that Deep
Throat knows, it makes sense why he is so paranoid. Proof of surveillance if given at the start of the

Politics and the media have long been intimately involved with each other, with media strongly
setting an agenda in which politics is very important. (Harris 1999,p.167) "Our perceived reality of

He is portrayed as just another broadcaster throughout the early coverage of European affairs and
does not stand out as a star until his broadcasts from London. He did essentially shape the way news
programs report and the simple inclusion of much of his early career proves this easily. The book is
most likely geared towards history and media enthusiasts. It is great for its intended audience, but
lacks exposition of much else other than his education and media careers. Edwards says that because
"With the focus strictly on Ed Murrow's innovations in radio and TV, large chunks of his life had to
be omitted" (9). As such, there is a lot of information missing for somebody that is extremely
interested in Murrow's life outside of work. This does help to maintain a concise summary of his life
in the industry without diluting the book with trivial facts about his life. For this reason, I think the
appeal of this book is much more widespread than just history or media buffs since it is a quick but
extremely informative read. His organization and style makes the book pretty easy to follow. The
only issues with readability are in the chapters during and following the World War II coverage
where he jumps from Murrow to a brief history of other "Murrow Boys" where he will fast forward
in the personality's life and then digress back to Murrow from chapter 3 to 6. While the information

"Me only have one ambition, y'know. I only have one thing I really like to see happen. I like to see
mankind live together – Black, White, Chinese, everyone– that's all" (Bob Marley). Bob Marley's
main goal was to bring people together through his music, and influence everyone he could to
become a better person. Throughout Bob Marley's music career, he didn't know what kind of artist
he wanted to be until later in life, and once he knew what kind of artist he wanted to be, he reached
out to people and made many people enjoy reggae music and really understand the message in his
music, which was not to hate or discriminate because we are all equal.
On February 6, 1945 in Nine mile, Saint–Ann Parish, Jamaica, Norval Sinclair Marley, a European
Jamaican captain of the Royal Marines, and Cedella Malcolm an eighteen–year–old African
Jamaican, had a baby boy together named Robert Nesta Marley, later known as Bob Marley, because
a Jamaican Passport official reversed his first and middle name. When Norval and Cedella wanted to
get married, Norvals family did not approve. They did not think a Captain of the Royal Marines
should be marrying an African–Jamaican woman who was not wealthy, and could not really do
anything with her life. Although Norvals family did not want them to be married they still got
married, but it turns out Norval was not that great of a father or Husband. As Bob was growing up,
his father Norval was barely around, he never got to see Bob grow up.

In a time of political, economic, and social unrest, a new way of protest was beginning to emerge
from Jamaica in the form of reggae music. It was 1963 when a young man from Jamaica by the
name of Robert Nesta Marley, better known as "Bob Marley", formed a band called The Wailers,
who would undoubtedly become one of the only reggae bands to rise up from the oppression of the
third world country. The country of Jamaica had just gained independence from the U.K. in 1962,
but was anything but a free nation. Those in power chose to exploit the country's few main exports,

So the Jamaican sound systems, mobile devices such as vans or musical equipment on wheels,
would be used to host dances, and the deejays would also use their sound systems to inform his
listeners on political happenings. King states that, "As one of the few affordable social activities for
the poor, the sound system brought music to places where the voice of the poor could be heard
without interference by local authorities" (16). Like most of the world during this time, the black
population was not allowed any political power, and many began to seek ways to resist. One of the
methods used as a means to passively fight back against the imbalance was the Rastafarian religion.
The Rastafarian religion was born early in the twentieth century, but its roots date back as far as the
late 1800's when slaves felt compelled to revolt against the plantation owners on the belief that God
was calling them to fight for freedom. In 1927, a man named Marcus Garvey brought forth to
Jamaicans the basis of the Rastafarian religion, which was to look to Africa for the crowning of a
king. This would be a sign for Jamaica that freedom is near. From Africana, the Encyclopedia of the
African and the African–American Experience, author Roanne Edwards quotes Garvey: "Look to
Africa for the crowning of a king to know that your redemption is nigh" (Edwards 1592). In 1930
Ras Tafari was crowned emperor of Ethiopia and baptized with the name Haile Selassie.

Willis gives one of his most sensitive turns in years as the dense but sweet Captain Sharp, who
becomes something of a father figure for Sam, albeit one who shares his beer." Sam is tough. On top
of being seemingly the most gifted scout in the troop, he is also the only boy of the khaki scouts
sensitive enough to fall for a girl to this extent. Sam can relate to adults much easier than his peers, a
great example is the beer scene towards the end of the movie. Captain Sharp even admits that Sam is
most likely smarter than him during a father like lecture on love and maturity.
The three authority figures Sam and Suzy are on the run from are Bruce Willis as the islands sheriff,
Edward Norton as the khaki scout troop leader, Bill Murray as Suzys father. Bill Murray delivers a
humor that is uniquely his as he portrays a stale, distant father figure. Willis and Norton, are both
well known for tough and hardened characters, so there is humor, as well as a little intrigue when
their past is contrasted with their roles in this movie. Watching Norton, with his performance in
Fight Club in mind, say: "jiminy cricket he flew the coop", is just so much more special. It all comes
back to the contradiction and balance Anderson loves to give us within almost every aspects of his
filmmaking.
Every shot of this film has a balance and symmetry that is simply beautiful. Set in the sixties, there
is nostalgia and visual appeal in every frame. There is also a color palette of soft green,

Table For Ladies, By Edward Hopper, And His Wife
Tables for Ladies is set in the interior of an unknown restaurant. There are four figures in this piece:
two guests, a cashier, and a waitress. The two guests, a man and a woman, are sitting at one of the
tables and seem to be having a conversation. The cashier stands nearby the cash register, possibly
counting the amount of money in it. The waitress is arranging the display of fruit, which is
presumably at the front of the restaurant. The restaurant contains wall mirrors, polished woodwork
and checkerboard blue and white tiles on the floor. The artist, Edward Hopper, and his wife, Jo, had
given each figure a name while this piece was painting. The couple is Max Scherer and his wife,
Sadie, the cashier is Anne Popebogales and the waitress is Olga. By personal observation, this piece
contains bright and vibrant colors. It also seems to portray a scene that can be identified in modern,
everyday life, as opposed to an art piece based on religious scenes from the Bible or Greek or
Roman mythology. This painting is meant to portray the changing roles of women after the First
World War, which can be evident in the fact that the two people working in this restaurant are both
women.
The painting was created by American artist, Edward Hopper. Hopper is possibly best known for his
painting, Nighthawks. Tables for Ladies contrasts this piece with its well light setting and warm,
vibrant colors. Nighthawks also features a restaurant as its setting, however, this piece is set at night.

Role Of Art In The Arts
Can the arts play a role in solving international conflicts? At first, my answer was a no. I mean
international conflicts are complex and far reaching. How could the arts possibly play a role?
However, throughout the day I thought about it more. I thought about how music, novels, films,
paintings can affect us on a very personal level. There have been plenty of times when art has put
me in either the best of moods or in the worst of moods. I then realized that the arts can play a role.
Perhaps not directly, but it can influence culture and culture can influence society which can then
affect the world. The main examples that came to my mind was The Beatles and Bob Marley's One
Love Peace concert. However, before getting into that I want to discuss the benefit concert held by
Ariana Grande after the Manchester terrorist attack.
On May 22nd, 2017 there was a bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England that
killed 22 people and wounded more than 100. I remember when I found out about the bombing. I
was utterly shocked and appalled, especially how some people on social media and the internet were
already making jokes about it. I just didn't understand how someone could do something like that.
However, whenever I found out that Ariana Grande was going to hold a One Love Manchester just
weeks after the attack I was both surprised and moved by it. I respected Ariana Grande and all the
musicians that performed such as: Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Coldplay,

The band was introduced to Clemet Dodd, a producer of the record company, Coxsone. It was here
where the Wailing Wailers recorded the first song "Simmer Down" which did quite well in Jamaica.
To help with the recording of their songs the studio provided several talented Ska musicians. The
Wailing Wailers were consisting now of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny who were starting to
become quite popular locally. Their audiences rapidly grew and they recorded several more songs on
the Coxsone label, which included "It Hurts To Be Alone" and "Rule the Roadie". Bob soon took on
the role of the leader, being the main songwriter.
The next day after his marriage Bob left for the United States to visit his mother who lived in
Delaware. While in North America he worked to better finance his music and soon returned home.
When Bob Marley returned the Wailing Wailers' music evolved from Ska to Rock Steady. This
evolution conflicted with Coxsone who wanted a Sim band. So the new Wailing Wailers left
Coxsone to form and renamed themselves the Wailers.
Instead of looking around for a new label the Wailers decided to form their own which they called
Wail n' Soul. They released a couple singles on their label such as "Bend Down Low" and "Mellow
Mood" before Wail n' Soul folded the very same year. The ending of their label affected the band
