History of Jamaican Music
The history of Jamaican music is inextricably intertwined with the history of the Jamaican people.
Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean, and was initially populated by the Arawak
people. Christopher Columbus "discovered" the island on his second voyage to the Americas, and it
was settled first by Spanish colonists, and later by English colonists. (Megan, R.)
Jamaicans possess a musical heritage that comes from their African and European roots. Reggae
music is Jamaica's best sound. These thumping sounds are rich and infectious and encompass

Rapping is, in fact, a method of creative expression. The thought that young people can participate
in this form of creativity seems to have helped the phenomenal growth of this genre of music and
expression. Dancehall is an expressive routine that includes songs, poetry, films and fashion. This
art form gives young people the outlet of expressing themselves creatively. (Franksterr)
This is "old time" story telling in song and music. It combines African and latin rhythm, with anglo
folksongs...and was very popular during the 1940s and 1950s. Today it is used mainly to entertain
visitors coming to the island...giving them a taste of what Jamaican music was like in the past.
Listen to it and you will most certainly feel the spirit of the "old" days. The stories it tell are usually
simple and funny everyday happenings in Jamaican life. The instruments are also very simple a
gourd shaker, a upright bass, rumba box, fiddle, mandolin, ukulele, or a trumpet. My American
friends tend to hang around it for a bit and find themselves certainly laughing and moving to the
beat. Ska is simply mento music moving to the next stage! Musicians began playing around with the
music – adding a little calypso here and there...a little American jazz, some rhythm &
blues...and before you know it ska popped out! This "new" rythm took the 1960 's by storm...until
The "rude boys" of the time slowed the pace a bit, added a steady rock beat...to

Jamaican Migration To Canada
When one thinks of Jamaica, often what comes to mind is the famous art of Reggae music as
Jamaica is the place of origin. The purpose of this essay is to outline the history of Jamaican people
to Canada, including musical and cultural influences of Jamaicans to Canada, specifically discussing
migration, cuisine, music, and health care. This essay will show there is more to Jamaican migration
beyond music. Jamaica has a long history as a migration hub, with many Jamaicans having moved
for employment purposes to countries such as Canada According to Statistics Canada, since the late
1960s Canada has been the number two location for Jamaican migrants with United States being
number one. In 2008, about 123,500 Jamaican migrants were living ... Show more content on

As explained by (Rose, 2013), the Canada Health Act of 1984 ensures all Canadian have access to a
publically funded health care system. This means that Canadians who are permanent residents can
access health care under OHIP, meaning the government gets billed. A barrier to health care is
ensuring the care provided is culturally sensitive . Health care providers are not knowledgeable
about a patient's culture; they may suggest options that are not fitting to the patient's morals and
beliefs. Immigrants represent diverse culture which offers both particular issues in the providing of
health care, preventative measures, and early detection of illness. The delivery of health care to
Jamaican migrants who come to Canada with issues related to moving must also include needs
associated with social determinants of health, not just existence of illness with the Jamaican migrant
population. Canadian immigration legislation makes it necessary that all permanent residents, which
include immigrants, have an immigration medical exam8. The immigration medical exam is a
mandatory part of the immigration application process when competed successfully, is valid for 12
months8. Screening is undertaken to assess possible concern of illness or disease on Canada and to
therefore limit the number of health risks entering the country. The purpose is not to provide clinical
prevention services and it is

Discontent Expressed through Blues, Jazz, Reggae, and Hip–hop
In cultures all over the world, music can be seen encompassing many aspects of life for many
individuals. It is a form of mass communication that"speaks directly to society as a cultural form",
and often reflects a collection and pattern of personal experiences (King 19). Music is so influential
because it communicates on three different levels: the physical, emotional, and cognitive. Not only
does it operate in a nondiscursive way, by affecting the physiological mode of the body, causing one
to move and dance, but it also encourages one to think. This paper will explore music as a form of
protest; showing how a political message, in general form, is presented through music. ... Show

It was shaped by social and political oppression and it reflects a defiant attitude toward life. The
blues represents survival during hard times and it tells the basic facts of life. As can be seen in the
music, there is an emphasis on the"immediacy of life, the nature of man, and human
survival..."formed from a history of mental and physical hardships (Spencer 39).
It is a direct expression of the post–slavery world view, linked to freeing the individual spirit.
The 'old blues' redefined America's traditional values, and led to the"vision of a new establishment"
(Spencer 56). It directly spoke out against white America and the Puritan ethos that was forced upon
the slaves for centuries. The lyrics helped release America from the"moral prison"of this Puritanism,
and questioned the morality of Christianity and white society. In the music, there is an emphasis on
unity, with the joining of man and woman together, and their ultimate triumph over the machine
(Spencer 57).
Despite the obvious separation between the blues and the church, the blues is often seen as a"secular
religion", as well as a form of art and modern mythology (Spencer 55). In comparing the blues
singer to a preacher, Charles Keil states,"Blues singers and preachers both provide models and

Bob Marley Main Ideas
Main Idea: Bob Marley
I was the man who introduced Reggae music to the world. I am Bob Marley or the "King of
Reggae," famous for my song "Stir it up" on the album Babylon By Bus and my song "No Woman
No Cry" on the album Live! It all started when I came into the world on February 6, 1945 in Nine
Mile, Jamaica. My mother was a teenager when she had me. My father, being a 60 year old Veteran,
died when I was only 10. Religion was a big part of my life but music was what my heart was set on
to do throughout my life.
Rastafarians, which are the group of people relating to a religious movement of Jamaica, worshiped
a king with the name of Haile Selassie. You can call me a Rastafarian but I find it more respectful to

The Music Of Jamaican Music And Music In The Jamaican Culture
Reggae is a large part of Jamaican culture and has expanded to be popular globally. It was made
popular throughout the 1960s mainly by a group from Jamaica called the wailers. They spread the
genre to numerous parts of the world and touring widely and eventually gaining a following. They
had also covered American songs in their genre which helped made it get into the mainstream. One
member of this group Bob Marley is known as a very important man in this genre and considered to
have brought it into the mainstream entertainment.
Reggae was the end genre from many earlier Jamaican dance music's. These fused together to make
reggae in the end. Some of the earlier genres were Ska and rocksteady it also took a heavy influence
from American genres of jazz and rhythm blues. The main features from these that made a song
reggae are the skank on the offbeat played in the chord and by a guitar usually. Another feature is
typically a bass melody or it can also be played by on organ. Vocals are another common item in
reggae music, Bob Marley was the primary vocalist of his group. Reggae is typically a slower tempo
at around 75, also it is almost always written in 4/4. Reggae has taken influence from different
cultures as its popularity spread around the world for example in Spain the local reggae style would
be slightly different to the regular reggae style from Jamaica.
The style of reggae has held itself through time, from when earlier version originated in Jamaica in
the 1950s

Growth of the Rastafarian Movement Essay
Since its founding in the 1930s, the Rastafarian movement has grown to the point where it has
become a major cultural and political force in Jamaica. During its existence, the movement has
challenged Jamaica's neo–colonialist society's attempts to keep whites at the top and blacks at the
bottom of the socio–economic structure.
Because of its controversial actions, the movement has evoked responses from observers that range
from "hostility" to "curiosity" (Forsythe 63). On one hand, Rastafarians have been criticized because
of their belief that Haile Selassie, the former emperor of Ethiopia, is God and that marijuana (ganja)
should be used as a religious sacrament. On the other hand, the Rastafari have been praised for their

There are several possible explanations for the rapid growth of Rastafari. One major factor in its
expansion was the emergence in the late 1960s of reggae music, a derivative of American rhythm
and blues and Jamaican ska. Reggae helped spread the philosophy of Rastafari to the wider
Jamaican audience and the world. During that period of time, Bob Marley and the Wailers were the
principal popularizers of reggae. Before Marley's death in 1981, the Wailers, with albums like
Burnin' (1973) and Survival (1979), articulated a message of liberation and redemption which had
"the power to transform a world of injustice and war into one of peace and love" (Reid 172). By
1986, the Wailers' ten albums had sold more than 20 million copies (Jennings 69).
Marley and his music were significant forces in the increased popularity of the movement. Barrett
felt that the growth of the movement was "largely due to the charismatic personality of Robert Nesta
Marley" (213). Davis and Simon proposed that the Wailers' music had thrust "the Rasta cosmology
into the middle of the planet's cultural arenas, and suddenly people [wanted] to know what all the
chanting and praying and obsessive smoking of herb [were] all about" (Reggae Bloodlines 63).
Because Marley's music was such a powerful force in the rise of the Rastafarian movement, there
are many popular and scholarly writings which focus on Marley and his music. An

"King Isaac's" Coat of Many Colors
African societies have a widely held public opinion that artists, especially reggae artists are either
illiterates or take marijuana or other substances of abuse. As much as such stereotypes hold for
some, here is a man whose career has broken the barriers of such stereotypes.
As the door to the music studio opens, a neatly dressed, huge man of about 5'90" tall, and seemingly
in his early 50s, walks in. Call him King Isaac.
This is one of the rare occasions when he will allow a journalist to follow him to the studio.
With a notebook in hand, he sits and scribbles a few sentences and then move to the drums. As he
nods and taps, the rhythms of the reggae base drum sounds out. He whistles and moves over ...

What attracted him to music?
"My interest grew when Bob Marley came in 1980. He had done a song called 'Zimbabwe,'
commemorating our struggle for independence and our government invited him and he opened a
floodgate of reggae music," he recalls.
The youngster's inspiration and he soon changed his poetic messages of black pride, justice, love
and equality, to lyrics. I asked him why he switched to reggae.
"The euphoria for independence, black liberation, those were the basic corner stones of the
Zimbabwean experience at that time, and the music was great."
Joining a local band made debut for him and recorded his first gig, "Simuka", a reggae ice about the
liberation struggle in South Africa, in 1986. Simultaneously, he was studying for a Bachelor's degree
in Economic History and History at the University of Zimbabwe.
Listening to and admiring Jamaican reggae artist, "I became a purist", he tells me. "I felt the reggae
of Africans was diluted"
Despite the early taste of success, King Isaac knew staying local might not be enough for him to
make it big. So, he looked for a way to get Jamaica. However, he cannot live in Jamaica because he
has no job or residence permit.

common for music to be used as an escape or call to action. Consequently, the song's lyrics although

Essay on The Evolution of Reggae Music
The Evolution of Reggae Music
Reggae has sustained the test of time and remains one of the world's last genuine folk music. The
evolution of Reggae music can be traced back to the early 1900's with 'Mento', which is a simple
music art form of Jamaican folk music with strong African roots. Reggae music is protest songs
against racism, corruption and injustice. It has close links with a religion based around the Bible that
is re–interpreted from a black's perspective, 'Rastafarianism'.
The key features of Reggae music are the 4/4 time signatures, the emphasised beats 2 and 4 of each
bar melody, the short repeated bass/guitar riffs, the syncopation, the pentatonic/ major/minor/blues

The first ever reggae tune was "Nanny Goat", by Larry and Alvin. Millie Small, and her debut single
"My Boy Lollipop" was the perfect example of the success that this new generation of peppy horn
melodies and up tempo vocal sounds. "My Boy Lollipop" was the song responsible for creating a
massive explosion of Reggae music in the local industry. During the Reggae era, artists like Bob
Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, Jimmy Cliff, King Stich and Burning Spear started to emerge
and incorporate the offbeat syncopated music style of Reggae into their songs, transforming the
songs into popular hits. Bob Marley was born in 1945 and he first joined Peter Tosh and Bunny
Wailer to form 'The Wailers'. Then he produced his own soul, rock steady (romantic soul), ska and
close harmony 'doo–wop' style songs, for example 'Catch a fire' and 'I shot the Sheriff'.
With the war era of the 60's approaching, reggae finally took form with a mellow beat, conscious
and emotional lyrics and bands that spoke the words of the people. The spiritual influence of reggae
captured fans worldwide and for the first time ever; reggae was a real influence internationally. Bob
Marley and the Wailers produced songs of hope and freedom that related to the wars happening
between Vietnam. The song "War" by Bob Marley and the Wailers impacted the world. These reggae

Music : The Best Reggae Band From The Columbus Area
The last critique snuck up on me and I was scrambling to find a musical performance that could fit
in my busy schedule. Luckily, as I was searching online for different performances I ran across The
Flex Crew performing at Skully's music diner. I have been to Skully's once before to watch a folk
band perform. The atmosphere was a lot different than when we saw The Flex Crew. Obviously, the
genre of music was a lot different, along with the atmosphere of the crowd. I was very surprised by
the number of people in the bar for the fact that the world series was on and was game 5. On top of
this, online their website said the show began at 10PM, but like very great band they came out at
their own pace. In the meantime, there was a DJ performing to keep the crowd alive. The Flex Crew
is a reggae band from the Columbus area. After doing a little research I learned they are known as
"the best reggae band in the Midwest."
A friend and I went to Skully's music diner on Sunday night to watch The Flex Crew. Their band
consists of seven members and they all varied on the different instruments. Some were strictly on
vocals, while others were on guitars, drums, pianos, etc. On top of this, the band was very diverse in
regards to playing and singing. Yes, there was a main guitarist and a main singer, but throughout the
songs they all grabbed different instruments and sang different pieces of the songs. I also learned
they originated from Columbus and have been around for close to twenty

Bob Marley
Of the many genres of music, reggae is one that displays a positive message to its listeners. A
prominent artist who clearly expressed this was Robert Nesta Marley, more commonly known as
Bob Marley. Marley connected with his audience on a variety of levels. While he worked to unite
the people of his country, Jamaica, he proclaimed his message across the world. Bob Marley
persuades his audience to accept the message of ethnic unity through his message presentation,
social interactions, lifestyle and musical lyrics.

In Jamaica, Marley could voice the feelings and opinions of his fellow citizens, who were delusional
with the failures of independence and the breakdown of local politics. The role of music in Jamaica
contributed to Marley?s music. It helped play an important role in giving voice and communicating
with an increasingly important political class in the evolving country. Undoubtedly, he was favored
by both sides of the politic battle in Jamaica and with many other nations around the world. Marley
avoided direct involvement in politics, because the Rastafarian people believe that activities like that
were essentially invalid manifestations of the work of higher government authorities against which
they believed. One of the original reasons behind Bob Marley?s emergence as a leader within post–
independent Jamaica was simple: the complete failure of the country?s political leaders to represent
the needs of the black lower classes in the years before and after their independence. By staying
away from the malevolent competitive battles of the actual and possible political leaders, he could
attract a group of followers that others could not amass. ?As former Jamaican prime minister
Michael Manley has noted, ?Marley took what was a subculture in Jamaica and elevated it to a
dominant culture?[He] took a folk art and he elevated it into a universal language of
communication.? Perhaps the expansion of black culture was even more important than political

Standing Up For The Genre Of Music: Reggae
As Bob Marley would say, "Get up and stand up for your rights." People who do not understand or
listen to reggae judge it without knowing anything about it. "Reggae is something potheads listen
to... Reggae just talks about weed... Reggae makes people rebellious... Reggae is just made by
Rastafarian artists." In this particular case, I'm going to stand up for the genre of music, reggae. First
and foremost, reggae is not about weed. As some artists do bring up in their music about smoking
and weed, reggae is known for their peaceful and loving lyrics. Matter of fact, Alborosie made a
song name, "No Cocaine" to show how some artists feel about drugs. So ALL songs are about
drugs? Eventually, when reggae was a new genre of music it was becoming popular around the

Fun fact: reggae artists are Jewish, Christians, Buddhists, Muslims and more. Now, for all the people
discriminating... they can possibly be discriminating their "own kind" which is hypocritical. What I
think about this is that any religion has to accept their peers or anyone that crosses their paths, so
why do they still do it? Reggae artists are all discriminated by their music and how they look.
Reggae is about loving yourself for who you are and expressing yourself, so of course reggae artists
are free spirited. Every religion in my opinion should be free spirited and accept everyone for how
they are because this is a world full of different kinds of beliefs and looks. This genre is what
exactly interprets what I'm talking about, especially how there's more to it like a religion. As the
reggae artist Lucky Dube said in his song, "Nobody knows what is right and nobody knows what is

Reggae: The Music of Protest Essay
There are several theories about how the word reggae originated. The first theory claims that the
word reggae was coined on a 1968 Pyramid dance single, "Do the Reggay (sic)," by
Toots and the Maytals. Some believe that the word is originated from Regga, the name of a Bantu–
speaking tribe on Lake Tanganyika. Others say that it is a corruption of the word streggae, which is
Kingston street slang for prostitute (The Origins of Ska …,n.d.). On the other hand, Bob
Marley claimed that the word was Spanish in origin, meaning "the king's music."
Veteran Jamaican studio musicians offer the simplest, and probably the most logical, explanation.

Many reggae historians claim that the founders of ska music are legendary producer Prince Buster
and Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. While they were looking for new sounds to thrill
Jamaican youth they changed the emphasis of the R&B from the first and third beats in the bar
to the second and fourth, creating the offbeat style that became the fulcrum of Jamaican music from
then on. By 1962 Jamaica was self–governing and ska was said to reflect the aspirations of the
newly liberated masses. In Jamaica, it is said that in mid 1960s summer the weather was too hot and
people refused to dance to up–tempo music like ska and this situation leaded to slow the tempo of
music so a new style of music was emerged, rock steady. However this is not simply the case, in
fact, the reason behind slowing down the tempo can be related with the disappearance of hopes to
independent future of Jamaica. Rock steady simply can be defined as; half–speed ska with the
trombone replaced by piano and prominent bass. (Rock Steady,n.d.). This short lived music
embedded to lyrics social themes and was a step to transit to reggae.
Reggae evolved from the roots of music styles mentioned above and the lyrics weighted more on
politics that addressed social and economical injustice. It also drew from folk music, Pocomania

The Mirroring Lives of a Jamaican and a Rastafarian
Introduction
This paper is a series of two interviews that I had over the course of the semester. I used both of the

The first interview occurred when I was in Jamaica. I randomly crossed paths with Peter. He

These Jamaicans may have long dreads and look like a Rastafarians but they do not know what it is

An Overview of Reggae Music Essay
Reggae is a genre of music that originated in Jamaica during the late 1960s. It is known for the
heavy and strong emphasis on the bass within the background beat. Reggae was perceived as a kind
of music used to express feelings about the social, political, and economic hardships in Jamaica
during the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was performed by musicians from black ghettos who used
unhurried beats to make a style of music of their own. Reggae became an important part of the
lifestyle of many Caribbean islanders; expressing a sense of pride of their Caribbean culture. Reggae

"From the shantytowns of Kingston, Jamaica, to the cobblestones streets of Great Britain, reggae

stars Bob Marley, Burning Spear, and Alpha Blondy have sung "redemption" songs– messages of
human rights and universal love in a "Babylonian" world of civil unrest, political instability, and
economic collapse"(Bays, King, and Foster, 2002, p. XI). Bob Marley was the most famous reggae
artist to bring popularity upon the music; selling over 20 million records worldwide. His songs such
as "One Love" and "Redemption Song" were inspired by the effects of oppression upon blacks in
Jamaica. Marley's persona for unity and peace among people throughout the world was an
inspiration for Jamaicans. Most blacks in Jamaica during the 1960s suffered from economic
hardships and racial discrimination. This in turn marked the beginning of a religious movement
called Rastafarinism where reggae music was an element that distinguished Rastafarians from the
rest of society. According to Chang and Chen, British colonial authorities and the local

Reggae : Music And The Image Of Reggae Music
Reggae essay
Reggae is a mix of musical styles and originated in Jamaica, bob marley is the image of reggae
music and when people hear the name reggae ythey instantly thingk of bob marley.
Reggae started in the late 1960s in Jamaica, reggae was considered a mix of many other musical
styles, mostly ska and Jamaican metro, the sound was similar to what was coming from new
Orleans, most listeners did not distinguish reggae from Jamaica dancehall music or the slowed down
version of ska music known as rocksteady, this was up until the band toots and the maytals came
along. There songs served as a sort of public notice that a new style of music had been born and was
staking its claim on the musical frontier. Besides its sound, reggae music is frequently associated

romantic love between a man and a woman. But it started to take a heavy influence from
Rastafarians throughout the 1970s, it has now become not the love for someone but the love for the

The True Beauty Of Music
"The true beauty of music is that it connects people. It carries a message, and we the musicians are
the messengers". Music has been the source of comfort for many people around the world who are
battling hardships; it helps connect people who share similar experiences and aspire to share the
same message together. In the Caribbean region, they all shared some fundamental experiences; in
particular, the history of slavery. Enslaved people suffered extreme punishments, diseases, poverty,
and rape. Their identities were stripped away from them and they were treated as a property of the
European owners. In the twentieth century, after slavery has been finally eradicated, the aboriginals
were weary of discrimination and the horrific living conditions they still suffered post–
independence. Therefore, they decided to fight for their rights to speak and voice an opinion. In the
Anglo–Caribbean region, music played a major part in people's lives. The Caribbean people turned
to Black Nationalism and began practicing their own spiritual beliefs and voicing their opinions to
send a message through their songs and music. "Nations in Latin America were beginning a process
of rapid urbanization. Cultural nationalism was widespread and expressed itself in musical
nationalism" . Music developed greatly after independence, art forms like Reggae, diaspora, Samba,
Tango, and Calypso that were established in the twentieth century are still practiced and celebrated
today all around the world.

The History of a Legacy
What is reggae music? Reggae music is a type of music that consists of different genres of music
such as blues and calypso. Reggae music also consists of different rhythms such as different accents
on different beats of the music. Say for instance you are playing in a four/four time measure. The
natural beat for a drummer playing in this type of particular time measure would be for him to hit
his high hat on all 4 beats, his bass foot pedal on one and three, and his snare on two and four. When
playing reggae this particular pattern differs for the drummer. When playing reggae the drummer has
more room to play around with the beat. In this particular setting the drummer would continue to hit
the hi hat on all four beats of the four measure. He would then start the measure of music by hitting

Reggae music consists of a drum set, bongos, bass guitar, electric guitar, and so much more. A basic
drum set for reggae music consists of a snare drum, a hi hat, a floor tom, a middle tom, and a high
tom, a kick bass, a ride cymbal and a crash symbol. All of these pieces if equipment are used to keep
the rhythm throughout the performance of music. Bongos are a lot like the toms of a drum set, but
differ as far as the material that is used to create the distinct sound of these two instruments. Toms of
a drum set consist of man made material, whereas bongos consist of drumheads that are made from
an animals skin. Bongos also are an advocate to the rhythmic part of reggae music. The bass guitar
is the heartbeat of reggae music. The bass guitar is a four string or more instrument that is played by
hand by plcking it or consciously striking it. An electric guitar is the exact same thing as a bass
guitar, with the exception of the pitch. A bass guitar has a deep bellowing kind of a pitch, whereas

Reggae Music: The Impact Of Reggae Music In Zimbabwe
Reggae music has become one of the most prominent genres of music in our world today. Thus, it
has come as no surprise that it has produced some of the finest musicians of the past century ranging
from Bob Marley to Beenie Man and even the now infamous, Buju Banton. Once the word, 'reggae'
is mentioned, some people often link it to Jamaica, however, what they do not know is that reggae
music actually has links to the African continent. It was a product of the Rastafari movement. A
Rastafari then through reggae music, sent strong messages. They saw Africa as Zion. Africa was like
Heaven on Earth and they intended to move back here. They not only wanted to return to Africa, but
they intended on building the continent whilst preserving its culture. ... Show more content on

This song was so important. However, Zimbabwe could not hear it until after they got their
independence in 1980 because it was banned because of its revolutionary message, his music was
not accepted into Zimbabwe. There was a serious censorship the apartheid government maintained.
They did not want the principles of black equality to be publicized, which was what Bob Marley's
music could have done. When Bob Marley eventually went to perform it live in Zimbabwe, they did
not know who he was. His fame rose up after he had left but people appreciated the fact that he had
come half way across the world to celebrate the independence. This marked the beginning of reggae
in Africa. Zimbabwe really appreciated him and according to Richard Johnson in his article,
Zimbabwe to honour Bob Marley, he says "Thirty–five years after performing at the first
Independence Day celebrations of Zimbabwe, Jamaican reggae icon Bob Marley will be
posthumously honoured at the annual Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA) on a date to be announced."
(Johnson) This shows how much appreciation Zimbabwe still feels towards Bob Marley and his
music. Thus, Zimbabweans entry to reggae music was through a song Bob Marley wrote for

My music will go on forever." When Bob Marley said this, many people probably did not believe
him. But if people look at the musical world from nowadays, they can certainly say that he was right
about it.
Before Marley's music, few people knew about the reggae genre and he changed this. He showed to
the world his culture and believes through his music and that must be one of the reasons why he was
so successful. He was not scared of contradictories opinions, neither he was ashamed of his way of
life. That makes him not only successful as musician but also as an activist and leader of his
followers and people who believed in the same ideas as he did.
During the time of his career and life, Jamaica was going through different political and civil
problems. Factions and gangs were in civil war in the streets, fighting for the power. While the
government was ruled by a conservative organization, most of the lands were controlled by few
people who were all European because of the British rule in the country. People may wonder how

The context of deindustrialization that gave birth to American hip hop is comparable to that of the
community of marginalized poor Blacks in ghetto Trenchtown in Jamaica. Hip hop was able to
replicate and reimagine the grievances of urban life and symbolically appropriates urban space, and
give disadvantaged young Black youth a voice to vent their frustrations (Rose, 1994). The tensions
and contradictions in public urban landscape during a period of substantial transformation in New
York and attempts to seize the shifting urban terrain are found within hip hop's rap lyrics. As a
result, rap lyrics directly related to urban deindustrialization of the 1970s, the postindustrial urban
landscape in 1980s, and impact of all these social pressures on the Black communities. Hip hop's
emergence entails several Afro–diasporic forms, traditions, and practices, and rap is form of protest
(Rose, 1994). Police brutality, racism, and harassment make up the political core of male rapper's
social criticism. This strongly parallels the social function of reggae lyrics.
Rose (1994) talks about the long history of Black cultural subversion and social critique in music
and performance, and the concept of the "hidden transcript". In social conditions in which direct
attacks on authoritative groups are unwise, oppressed people may use music to mock those in power,
to express rage, and to produce fantasies of subversion (Rose,

Reggae Is Not Only A Type Of Music
For indigenous communities throughout the world, reggae is not only a type of music, but a culture.
One of the most worldwide forms of popular culture, reggae is able to be found in many
communities, such as Native American, Aboriginal Australian, Hawaiian and Pacific. Reggae has a
very well known and well defined associated culture. It must be kept in mind the appeal of the
Rastafarian 'lifestyle' associated with the reggae genre. For many youth in indigenous communities,
this lifestyle may be seen as more attractive than the music itself, hence why the popularity of the
genre in countries where youth are displaced, disenfranchised or displeased with social, political and
economic conditions. However, the meanings in the lyrics attached to reggae music are reflective of
these conditions. As a music and a culture, reggae is undoubtedly rebellious. Both the sound of
reggae and the message within it convey a sense of struggle which many indigenous communities
identify with. It is able to be used by indigenous communities as a platform to discuss shared
experiences of colonial imperialism and supremacy, and examples of reggae differ depending on
what community and country it was produced in. These groups have shared experiences of
colonialism and subjugation by hegemonic (often white) powers. Reggae is popular in indigenous
communities for both its sound and message. It is adopted and transformed by these communities to

Artists would essentially hit "two birds with one stone." The first bird was the ability to simply
perform their music. However the second bird isn't as simple as the first, it is the meaning. The
second was the protest against the Babylon system and oppression. To the Rastafari, the Babylon
system is any and all oppressive and unequal practices in Jamaica. Babylon began to surface
throughout reggae music. Reggae lyrics are suggestive of the reggae protest songs. Bob Marley is a
great example of capturing his strong negative views of Babylon. Reggae protest songs proved to be
a force with power, both socially and politically. Ironically the Jamaican government would use
reggae as a vehicle to promote its views (King, xiv).

The Cultural Movement of the Skinheads
One of the biggest cultural movements to arise from Reggae was the Skinheads. Skinhead culture
grew from the fusion between the modernists or 'Mods' and Jamaican rude boys. Mod culture was a
youth movement in British cities that originated in the late 1950s, that represented a certain fashion,
music tastes and scooter riding. The peak of the Mod culture matched up with the time when the
majority of Caribbean immigrants arrived in the UK, in the mid 60's. Due to a large amount of Mods
being of working–class backgrounds, they were one of the few groups to mix with the Caribbean
immigrants. Once Mod culture declined, due to commercialisation of the style and their
demonisation due to the violence between them and rival 'Rockers', some Mods began the Skinhead
movement by integrating Jamacian style and music into Mod fashion. Many young mods of the
mid/late 1960s lived in the same working class and economically challenging areas as Jamaican
immigrants in areas such as parts of South London. Those 'hard' mods eventually created the
Skinhead movement. Those Mods began integrating the 'rude boy' fashion of short trousers, braces
and Trilbys into their fashion of Fred Perry shirts, skinnier jeans and Dr. Martens boots. The actual
'skinhead' aspect of very short hair originates with working class Mods and very early Skinheads
who choose to cut their hair this short for the practical reasons of it not impeding them in either

The origins of Reggae start with African music as the people of Jamaica are descendants of the

How was Bob Marley Associated with religion and black politics?
In 1967 he converted from Christianity to Rastafarianism, a religion that has had a profound
influence on reggae music. The Rastafarian movement of this period, among other beliefs,
recognized Haile Selassie I, king of Ethiopia, as the living God; praised the spiritual effects of
marijuana; and endorsed black racial superiority. Influenced by the Rastafarian movement, Marley's
music contains elements of spiritualism and mysticism. Some songs call for personal freedom
through revolution, while others embrace carefree attitudes toward life or convey stories of love.
Marley and the Wailers recorded Catch a Fire (1972), Burnin' (1973), Natty Dread (1975), and Live
(1975), among other albums. During the 1970s, amid great political and economic turmoil in
Jamaica, Marley cultivated a rebel image. An increasingly political figure, he survived a 1976
assassination attempt at his home in Jamaica. He subsequently went to Europe and experienced a

Bob Marley and Reggae Music
Certainly, there are a variety of musically inclined artists in the world yet few can actually be
considered legends. Several of these artists fall under the Reggae genre. Reggae, according to
Merriam–Webster's Online Dictionary, is defined as, "popular music of Jamaican origin that
combines native styles with elements of rock and soul music and is performed at moderate tempos
with the accent on the offbeat," ("Reggae,").This style of music is not as popular as others, yet there
is one name that comes to mind, Bob Marley. Unquestionably, Bob Marley's unique sound and style
has dubbed him one of the most influential artists of the reggae genre. Bob Marley began producing
songs around the age of 17. He then met up with several other young ... Show more content on

To have the ability to stand up for what you believe in and stand your ground can be one of the most
challenging things to do. Especially in the entertainment industry because you have to walk on
eggshells when it comes to anything religious. Plenty whom have attempted it, have failed
miserably. This is why Bob Marley's music is unforgettable. Bob Marley's music is no doubt some
of the most influential out there. Of course it would have to be because according to Baker's
Biographical Dictionary, " Bob Marley emerged as the first (and possibly only) artist from the third
world to achieve international stardom," (Slonimsky 2287–2289). His ability to capture and entrance
people was of great help to the development of this stardom and made him a person that many could
easily relate to. One of his songs that I find myself easily relating to is, "Is this love?" This song
describes love and yet at the same time it describes how we question it. The lyrics are short and
simple, yet hold a lot of meaning. In conclusion, Bob Marley has taken the reggae world of music
and opened several new doors for it. He's recognized as a peace maker and has stood up for the
rights of human beings everywhere. The mellow style of his music can easily help a person relax
whereas, at the same time he is easily related to by millions. Although some don't like his music
because it is extremely controversial at times, there is a lot of meaning behind each song that fails to

Bob Marley And The Destruction Of Racism
Bob Marley
The voice that transcended populations, races, colors and cultures. An advocate for peace, his music
spoke about the destruction of racism and the importance of love and friendship. Born February 6,
1945, in St. Ann Parish, Jamaica Bob Marley became the first international pop artist to arise from a
third world country, selling over 20 million records throughout his artistic career. As he took reggae
outside the Jamaican borders Bob Marley popularized reggae music world wide, eventually
becoming one of the most recognized figures of the 20th century. Even now almost four decades
after his death in 1981 due to cancer, people and countries, many of which are not English speaking,

Marley never got to go home for his farewell concert and his cancer was aggravated by the
exhausting trip from Germany to Jamaica. A national hero to Jamaica, the Jamaican Government
presented Bob Marley with the Order of Merit, as well a year before his death he was awarded the
Medal of peace by the United Nations. At the National Arena in Kingston more than 30,000 people
came to his memorial to mourn the death of a beloved musician. In 1994 he was finally
immortalized in the music industry by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. While
it's been decades since Bob Marley sang his last song, his music and values still live on through the
legacies he left behind. His fight for human rights continues through the Bob Marley Foundation,
which helps people living in developing

History Of Jamaican Music

  • 1. History of Jamaican Music Crystal Hislop Research Paper: Final Submission History of Jamaican Music Contemporary History Professor: Sharon Rodriguez 2/19/12 History of Jamaican Music The history of Jamaican music is inextricably intertwined with the history of the Jamaican people. Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean, and was initially populated by the Arawak people. Christopher Columbus "discovered" the island on his second voyage to the Americas, and it was settled first by Spanish colonists, and later by English colonists. (Megan, R.) Jamaicans possess a musical heritage that comes from their African and European roots. Reggae music is Jamaica's best sound. These thumping sounds are rich and infectious and encompass expression ... The thought that young people can participate in this form of creativity seems to have helped the phenomenal growth of this genre of music and expression. Dancehall is an expressive routine that includes songs, poetry, films and fashion. This art form gives young people the outlet of expressing themselves creatively. (Franksterr) This is "old time" story telling in song and music. It combines African and latin rhythm, with anglo folksongs...and was very popular during the 1940s and 1950s. Today it is used mainly to entertain visitors coming to the island...giving them a taste of what Jamaican music was like in the past. Listen to it and you will most certainly feel the spirit of the "old" days. The stories it tell are usually simple and funny everyday happenings in Jamaican life. The instruments are also very simple a gourd shaker, a upright bass, rumba box, fiddle, mandolin, ukulele, or a trumpet. My American friends tend to hang around it for a bit and find themselves certainly laughing and moving to the beat. Ska is simply mento music moving to the next stage! Musicians began playing around with the music – adding a little calypso here and there...a little American jazz, some rhythm & blues...and before you know it ska popped out! This "new" rythm took the 1960 's by storm...until The "rude boys" of the time slowed the pace a bit, added a steady rock beat...to

The purpose of this essay is to outline the history of Jamaican people to Canada, including musical and cultural influences of Jamaicans to Canada, specifically discussing migration, cuisine, music, and health care. This essay will show there is more to Jamaican migration beyond music. Jamaica has a long history as a migration hub, with many Jamaicans having moved for employment purposes to countries such as Canada According to Statistics Canada, since the late 1960s Canada has been the number two location for Jamaican migrants with United States being number one. As explained by (Rose, 2013), the Canada Health Act of 1984 ensures all Canadian have access to a publically funded health care system. This means that Canadians who are permanent residents can access health care under OHIP, meaning the government gets billed. A barrier to health care is ensuring the care provided is culturally sensitive . Health care providers are not knowledgeable about a patient's culture; they may suggest options that are not fitting to the patient's morals and beliefs. Immigrants represent diverse culture which offers both particular issues in the providing of health care, preventative measures, and early detection of illness. The delivery of health care to Jamaican migrants who come to Canada with issues related to moving must also include needs associated with social determinants of health, not just existence of illness with the Jamaican migrant population. Canadian immigration legislation makes it necessary that all permanent residents, which include immigrants, have an immigration medical exam8. The immigration medical exam is a mandatory part of the immigration application process when competed successfully, is valid for 12 months8. Discontent Expressed through Blues, Jazz, Reggae, and Hip–hop In cultures all over the world, music can be seen encompassing many aspects of life for many individuals. It is a form of mass communication that"speaks directly to society as a cultural form", and often reflects a collection and pattern of personal experiences (King 19). Music is so influential because it communicates on three different levels: the physical, emotional, and cognitive. Not only does it operate in a nondiscursive way, by affecting the physiological mode of the body, causing one to move and dance, but it also encourages one to think. It was shaped by social and political oppression and it reflects a defiant attitude toward life. The blues represents survival during hard times and it tells the basic facts of life. As can be seen in the music, there is an emphasis on the"immediacy of life, the nature of man, and human survival..."formed from a history of mental and physical hardships (Spencer 39). It is a direct expression of the post–slavery world view, linked to freeing the individual spirit. The 'old blues' redefined America's traditional values, and led to the"vision of a new establishment" (Spencer 56). It directly spoke out against white America and the Puritan ethos that was forced upon the slaves for centuries. The lyrics helped release America from the"moral prison"of this Puritanism, and questioned the morality of Christianity and white society. In the music, there is an emphasis on unity, with the joining of man and woman together, and their ultimate triumph over the machine (Spencer 57). Despite the obvious separation between the blues and the church, the blues is often seen as a"secular religion", as well as a form of art and modern mythology (Spencer 55). I am Bob Marley or the "King of Reggae," famous for my song "Stir it up" on the album Babylon By Bus and my song "No Woman No Cry" on the album Live! It all started when I came into the world on February 6, 1945 in Nine Mile, Jamaica. My mother was a teenager when she had me. My father, being a 60 year old Veteran, died when I was only 10. Religion was a big part of my life but music was what my heart was set on to do throughout my life. Rastafarians, which are the group of people relating to a religious movement of Jamaica, worshiped a king with the name of Haile Selassie. • 10. The Music Of Jamaican Music And Music In The Jamaican Culture Reggae is a large part of Jamaican culture and has expanded to be popular globally. It was made popular throughout the 1960s mainly by a group from Jamaica called the wailers. They spread the genre to numerous parts of the world and touring widely and eventually gaining a following. They had also covered American songs in their genre which helped made it get into the mainstream. One member of this group Bob Marley is known as a very important man in this genre and considered to have brought it into the mainstream entertainment. Reggae was the end genre from many earlier Jamaican dance music's. These fused together to make reggae in the end. Some of the earlier genres were Ska and rocksteady it also took a heavy influence from American genres of jazz and rhythm blues. The main features from these that made a song reggae are the skank on the offbeat played in the chord and by a guitar usually. Another feature is typically a bass melody or it can also be played by on organ. Vocals are another common item in reggae music, Bob Marley was the primary vocalist of his group. Reggae is typically a slower tempo at around 75, also it is almost always written in 4/4. Reggae has taken influence from different cultures as its popularity spread around the world for example in Spain the local reggae style would be slightly different to the regular reggae style from Jamaica. • 12. Growth of the Rastafarian Movement Essay Since its founding in the 1930s, the Rastafarian movement has grown to the point where it has become a major cultural and political force in Jamaica. During its existence, the movement has challenged Jamaica's neo–colonialist society's attempts to keep whites at the top and blacks at the bottom of the socio–economic structure. Because of its controversial actions, the movement has evoked responses from observers that range from "hostility" to "curiosity" (Forsythe 63). On one hand, Rastafarians have been criticized because of their belief that Haile Selassie, the former emperor of Ethiopia, is God and that marijuana (ganja) should be used as a religious sacrament. On the other hand, the Rastafari have been praised for their continual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are several possible explanations for the rapid growth of Rastafari. One major factor in its expansion was the emergence in the late 1960s of reggae music, a derivative of American rhythm and blues and Jamaican ska. Reggae helped spread the philosophy of Rastafari to the wider Jamaican audience and the world. During that period of time, Bob Marley and the Wailers were the principal popularizers of reggae. Before Marley's death in 1981, the Wailers, with albums like Burnin' (1973) and Survival (1979), articulated a message of liberation and redemption which had "the power to transform a world of injustice and war into one of peace and love" (Reid 172). By 1986, the Wailers' ten albums had sold more than 20 million copies (Jennings 69). Marley and his music were significant forces in the increased popularity of the movement. Barrett felt that the growth of the movement was "largely due to the charismatic personality of Robert Nesta Marley" (213). Davis and Simon proposed that the Wailers' music had thrust "the Rasta cosmology into the middle of the planet's cultural arenas, and suddenly people [wanted] to know what all the chanting and praying and obsessive smoking of herb [were] all about" (Reggae Bloodlines 63). Because Marley's music was such a powerful force in the rise of the Rastafarian movement, there are many popular and scholarly writings which focus on Marley and his music. An ... King Isaac 's Coat Of Many Colors "King Isaac's" Coat of Many Colors African societies have a widely held public opinion that artists, especially reggae artists are either illiterates or take marijuana or other substances of abuse. As the door to the music studio opens, a neatly dressed, huge man of about 5'90" tall, and seemingly in his early 50s, walks in. Call him King Isaac. This is one of the rare occasions when he will allow a journalist to follow him to the studio. With a notebook in hand, he sits and scribbles a few sentences and then move to the drums. Joining a local band made debut for him and recorded his first gig, "Simuka", a reggae ice about the liberation struggle in South Africa, in 1986. Simultaneously, he was studying for a Bachelor's degree in Economic History and History at the University of Zimbabwe. The role of music in Jamaica contributed to Marley?s music. It helped play an important role in giving voice and communicating with an increasingly important political class in the evolving country. Undoubtedly, he was favored by both sides of the politic battle in Jamaica and with many other nations around the world. Marley avoided direct involvement in politics, because the Rastafarian people believe that activities like that were essentially invalid manifestations of the work of higher government authorities against which they believed. One of the original reasons behind Bob Marley?s emergence as a leader within post– independent Jamaica was simple: the complete failure of the country?s political leaders to represent the needs of the black lower classes in the years before and after their independence. By staying away from the malevolent competitive battles of the actual and possible political leaders, he could attract a group of followers that others could not amass. ?As former Jamaican prime minister Michael Manley has noted, ?Marley took what was a subculture in Jamaica and elevated it to a dominant culture?[He] took a folk art and he elevated it into a universal language of communication.? First and foremost, reggae is not about weed. As some artists do bring up in their music about smoking and weed, reggae is known for their peaceful and loving lyrics. Matter of fact, Alborosie made a song name, "No Cocaine" to show how some artists feel about drugs. So ALL songs are about drugs? • 33. Reggae: The Music of Protest Essay There are several theories about how the word reggae originated. The first theory claims that the word reggae was coined on a 1968 Pyramid dance single, "Do the Reggay (sic)," by Toots and the Maytals. Some believe that the word is originated from Regga, the name of a Bantu– speaking tribe on Lake Tanganyika. Others say that it is a corruption of the word streggae, which is Kingston street slang for prostitute (The Origins of Ska …,n.d.). On the other hand, Bob Marley claimed that the word was Spanish in origin, meaning "the king's music." While they were looking for new sounds to thrill Jamaican youth they changed the emphasis of the R&B from the first and third beats in the bar to the second and fourth, creating the offbeat style that became the fulcrum of Jamaican music from then on. By 1962 Jamaica was self–governing and ska was said to reflect the aspirations of the newly liberated masses. In Jamaica, it is said that in mid 1960s summer the weather was too hot and people refused to dance to up–tempo music like ska and this situation leaded to slow the tempo of music so a new style of music was emerged, rock steady. However this is not simply the case, in fact, the reason behind slowing down the tempo can be related with the disappearance of hopes to independent future of Jamaica. Rock steady simply can be defined as; half–speed ska with the trombone replaced by piano and prominent bass. (Rock Steady,n.d.). The tensions and contradictions in public urban landscape during a period of substantial transformation in New York and attempts to seize the shifting urban terrain are found within hip hop's rap lyrics. • 71. The Cultural Movement of the Skinheads One of the biggest cultural movements to arise from Reggae was the Skinheads. Skinhead culture grew from the fusion between the modernists or 'Mods' and Jamaican rude boys. Mod culture was a youth movement in British cities that originated in the late 1950s, that represented a certain fashion, music tastes and scooter riding. The peak of the Mod culture matched up with the time when the majority of Caribbean immigrants arrived in the UK, in the mid 60's. Due to a large amount of Mods being of working–class backgrounds, they were one of the few groups to mix with the Caribbean immigrants. Once Mod culture declined, due to commercialisation of the style and their demonisation due to the violence between them and rival 'Rockers', some Mods began the Skinhead movement by integrating Jamacian style and music into Mod fashion. Many young mods of the mid/late 1960s lived in the same working class and economically challenging areas as Jamaican immigrants in areas such as parts of South London. Those 'hard' mods eventually created the Skinhead movement. Those Mods began integrating the 'rude boy' fashion of short trousers, braces and Trilbys into their fashion of Fred Perry shirts, skinnier jeans and Dr. Martens boots. The actual 'skinhead' aspect of very short hair originates with working class Mods and very early Skinheads who choose to cut their hair this short for the practical reasons of it not impeding them in either street fights and football brawls, that some Mods ...
