The Plot
Coketown is a grimy, smelly industrial town in northern England, its houses and skies blackened by
smoke from factory chimneys. One of its leading citizens is Thomas Gradgrind, future member of
Parliament and governor of the local school. Gradgrind lives with his wife and five children,
including the eldest, Louisa, and Tom, Jr.
When we first see Gradgrind, he is observing a typical class in his school, taught by Mr.
M'Choakumchild. Gradgrind lectures the teacher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Treating the "lower classes" with such kindness is a mistake to him; these people are spoiled
enough. Bounderby lives with his housekeeper, Mrs. Sparsit, a member of the faded aristocracy. She
has lost her money, but not her disdain for those she considers beneath her.
Another resident of Coketown is Stephen Blackpool, a factory worker.
Once happily married, Stephen is separated from his wife, a drunkard who wanders off for months
at a time, only to return to shame him.
Stephen is in love with Rachael, another worker, but the two of them can't marry because of divorce
laws that favor the wealthy. For
Stephen and Rachael, life is a "muddle."
Gradgrind is elected to Parliament. It is decided that his son Tom should work at Bounderby's bank
and that his daughter Louisa should marry Bounderby. Louisa tries to communicate to her father that
the marriage would be a mistake, but Gradgrind refuses to hear of anything that speaks of love or
sentiment. Only Sissy, who discontinues her education because she is thought "unteachable," but
who stays on in the Gradgrind household, understands Louisa's plight. But Louisa is too proud to
accept Sissy's compassion. When the wedding takes place, only Tom Gradgrind is truly happy,
thinking his life at the Bounderby bank will be much easier with his sister around to defend him.
A year after the wedding, changes have taken place in Coketown. Mrs.
Sparsit now lives in an apartment at the bank, where the

Hard Times And Pride And Prejudice Essay
The novels Hard Times (1854) written by Charles Dickens (1812–1870) and Pride and Prejudice
(1813) written by Jane Austen (1775–1817) are two very distinct literary works, written and
published in two completely different eras. While Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice in the Georgian
era, Dickens's novel Hard Times is a part of the Victorian age. These novels represent disparate
worlds, that of rigid and utilitarian aspects on one hand and domestic concerns over marriage and
property on the other. These novels represent women in a certain light, quite different from the each
other, but the same. This paper thus aims to analyse the portrayal of female characters by Dickens
and Austen in the aforementioned novels, in view of their gender identities ... Show more content on

This is an opposition with which Dickens makes extended ironic play later in the story, when Sissy
becomes the homemaker, the most settled and the most respectable member of the Gradgrind family.
She is,at the beginning of the book, not only of questionable parentage but a virtual orphan. From
this situation there develops an ironic opposition between the ties of blood and those of affectiom,
for Sissy, deprived of a family by blood, is supported by the extended, unorthodox family of the
circus people and she eventually becomes Gradgrind's honorary and truest daughter. Her love is
undying and is not affected by his loveless teaching. Her devotion brings about family feeling in her
new father and sister as when, in Louisa's grave trouble, the once deserted girl shone like a beautiful
light upon the darkness of the other (Dickens, 248). Sissy becomes the motherly, sisterly and
daughterly heart of the adoptive family and her very nickname signals her familial role throughout
the story, as the archetypical sister. However, the reward for this depiction of virtue is confined
within the family. Although Sissy grows from child to woman in years, she does not move, like most
of Dickens's good women, beyond the roles of a surrogate mother, daughter and sister to sexual
maturity. Initially, the book

The Role of the Circus Folk in 'Hard Times' by Charles...
The Role of the Circus Folk in 'Hard Times' by Charles Dickens
The role of the circus is both complex and simple it is in itself a contradiction; it has been placed
within the novel to add another dimension to the story of Coketown but also to show how fragile
human nature can be. The circus folks role are complicated in their simplicity, they are of course
there to carry out the role that they are paid to perform as actors or performers as well as being there
for the second more complicated role of showing the notion of fancy within the novel. It is this
second role which this essay will strive to discuss and discover.
There are many sides to the circus it is a multi talented organisation ... Show more content on

The modern reader may or may not have recognised from her description of her fathers job that she
was a circus child. When Gradgrind hears her name he becomes annoyed and insists that she no
longer allow her father to refer to her as Sissy but instead he must call her Cecilia "call yourself
Cecilia" (Charles Dickens: page 4 Hard Times 1854). The fact That Sissy's father has a 'pet' name
for her is important because it shows emotion within her family, she has a bond with her father that
we would refer to as affection or even love, Gradgrind and Coketown do not recognise these
emotions but view them as fancy, nothing serious or factual about them. The purpose of the school is
to produce future citizens of Coketown that are uniform and do not question what could have been,
Sissy does not fit within this mould as she feels and by feeling she has fancies which is against the
principal ideas of Coketown.
The reader's introduction to the circus as an event within Coketown comes in what can be
considered a surprising way. Whilst Gradgrind is walking home past the circus he notice his own
children who have been raised on fact alone watching the circus Gradgrind's exclamation of " In the
name of wonder, Idleness and folly" (Charles Dickens: page 15, Hard Times, 1854) is an unusual

Moll Flanders Comparison Essay
The authors of five English novels portray the role of a foster or adopted child in similar and
contrasting ways. In Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe, the hardships an adopted child faces expose
their financial challenges. Throughout Persuasion by Jane Austen, adopted and foster children are
given more love from the foster parents than the biological parent as the foster parents are
overcompensating trying to be the best parent. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, sheds light on
the problems that can occur when an adopted child tries to integrate into a household. Charles
Dickens' novel, Hard Times, shows how an adopted child can change a household for the better by
introducing new ways of thinking. Throughout Tess of the D'Urbervilles by ... Show more content

Both Moll and Sissy are given an education, Moll succeeds, while Sissy does not. Similarly,
Catherine Earnshaw goes to live with the Lintons, and becomes their adopted daughter for five
weeks. While she lives with the Lintons, Catherine is educated on how to be a proper lady. With the
Linton's help, Catherine's "manners were much improved"(WH 55). When she returns home, she is
a completely different woman, and rather than "a wild savage... [she was] a dignified woman"(WH
55). Even though Moll, Sissy, and Catherine are educated with different methods and on different
topics, they all have an opportunity for an education; however, both Heathcliff and Hareton are
deprived of an education which results in them being academically unsuccessful in relation to Moll,
Sissy, and Catherine. When Hindley returns from university, and becomes master of the house, he
stops Heathcliff's education. He "deprive[s] [Heathcliff] of the instructions of the curate, and

Katie Rommely Analysis
When Katie Rommely has her first child she learns that she must be able to provide her daughter
with more than what she had as a child. Before her children, Katie was soft, she was romantic
enough to marry Johnny only because he could sing, dance, and had a handsome face. By the time
she has her children she realizes she can depend solely on her self to provide for her family and at
this point Katie develops from a hopeless romantic into a Rommely women "made out of thin

Movie Reflection
This film exemplifies the group dynamic by, showing how the characters in the movie interact with
each other especially since they all come from different sociological groups in their school. In the
beginning, it was difficult for them to get along. The characters in the movie are Claire Standish,
who was in detention for skipping school to go shopping. Brian Johnson, was in detention for
having a gun in his locker. Allison Reynolds, was in detention because she had nothing else to do.
Andrew Clark, was in detention for tapping another student's butt cheeks together. and Jon Bender,
was in detention for pulling the fire alarm. The characters moved to being an "in group" when they
realized that they can all relate to each other's personal experience like dealing with problems at
home, dealing with peer pressure at school and trying to please their parents. By the end of the
movie, They definitely seemed to matured in their attitudes and their actions talking about each one
of their issues together seemed to have helped them a little become better people. Claire Standish
learned to be more generous and helpful she also learned how to not give into peer pressure. Brian
Johnson, learned that getting one bad grade isn't such a big deal, he also made friends. Allison
Reynolds, has a new positive outlook on life and herself. Andrew Clark, learned that he doesn't have
to pretend to be someone he's not. Jon Bender, learned that he can open up to people and form
healthy relationships.

Emily Dicken And Existentialism Essay
I Would Create A Clever Title, But I Don't Want My Unladylike Existentialism To Intimidate The
Men
For a lady in the Victorian era, thinking independently and unreservedly often leads to trouble.
Dicken's character Gradgrind even instructs his daughter against such pastimes, saying "'Louisa,
never wonder!'" (Dickens 89). The Victorian view of womanhood in Hard Times presents the ideal
version of femininity as submissive, compassionate, and always content with her station,
particularly in regards to her status beneath her husband. Sissy, the poor but kind orphan in the
novel, acts with sensitivity and often naivety, which rewards her in the end. Louisa challenges this
role with her initial inability to sympathize. Intelligent but aloof, she is taught to abide strictly to the
rule of fact by her utilitarian father Gradgrind. This strict avidness to ignoring emotion and curiosity
lead Louisa to repress her identity so she can conform to her father's principles. Her deficit of
empathy, ample education, and abundance of detachment all lead to her failure to attain the ideal of
Victorian womanhood. A woman that does not follow the rules society sets ... Show more content on

femininity, taking note of her "childlike ingenuousness . . . her modest fearlessness, her truthfulness
which put all artifice aside, her entire forgetfulness of herself in her earnest quiet holding to the
object with which she had come" (253). Sissy conquers balance between the extremes of folly and
fact. Her perfection of the traits of a proper Victorian woman allows her to achieve the only happy

The Sissy Duckling Stereotypes
The "Sissy" Who Saved the Day If presented to a child properly the children's book The Sissy
Duckling can be a wonderful tool for decreasing, chances of the children having stereotypes or
showing prejudice towards the queer lifestyle, as the children who read the book mature and become
adults. Not that sexuality is addressed in this book, but the flamboyant main character can be a
representation of the stereotype that homosexual men are perceived as. The book is the story of a
duck who lives outside the norms of what all the other ducks live by. For being different the duck is
ridiculed, by both kids at school and his father. In the end however the duck emerges the hero, and

Such results as reinforcing stereotypes that this book portrays. For example, from viewing this book
it could be said the main character is more attracted to fashion than his counterparts in the book, but
he is also less attracted to what is "normal" for little boys to be interested in such as when he
attempts to play baseball, and for likes and dislikes he is labeled a "Sissy". The book also displays
blatant bullying by other kids at the main character's school towards him, and use of derogatory
names such as "Sissy". Also, there is the daily indignity that Elmer must endure, that many
flamboyant men must endure, whether straight or homosexual, every day when they are not
accepted, or made to feel different by the dominant class (Straight people), that is portrayed very
vividly in this book. In the end however there is the positive message of Elmer being accepted by
his father, and other lessons throughout the book that are taught, such as using words to battle
bullying opposed to violence, as demonstrated by Elmer's quip while playing baseball "Do I point
out YOUR shortcomings?" (Fierstein,2005, p.7). Again this was a good book for exposing children
to the fact that people act different, but just because they act different does not mean that there is
anything wrong with

Mommy Bear Book Report
"Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world" said by Nelson Madela is
the best quote to describe why children should be reading books about the LGBT community. The
positioning of the difficult topic in classrooms can be shown through the research done by Ohio
State University in high schools. By reading LGBT literature over time on a normal basis it
normalized the idea to the children. Education is important to all children, but the education on the
LGBT community is difficult to find in any community. Through reading different types of fiction
teachers, parents, and others can introduce and teach about the different life styles in our
communities today.
In The New Goldilocks and the Tree Bears: Mama Bear, Mommy Bear, and Baby Bear the timeless
story is transformed to show how families can have different structures. Through reading the book
the first item that is can be clearly seen are the bright colorful illustrations. These illustrations attract

Significance of Emotional Education in Dickens' Novel,...
Set in the ever shifting world of the Industrial Revolution, Charles Dickens' novel Hard Times
begins with a description of a utilitarian paradise created by the illustrious and "eminently practical"
Mr. Gradgrind, a world that follows a prescribed set of logically laid–out facts. However, readers
soon realize that Gradgrind's modern utopia is only a simulacrum, belied by the damnation of lives
devoid of elements that feed the heart and soul, as well as the mind. As the years progress, the
weaknesses of Gradgrind's carefully constructed system become painfully apparent, especially in his
children Louisa and Tom, and in the poor workers employed under one Mr. Josiah Bounderby, a
wealthy factory owner who is a subscriber to Gradgrind's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, Louisa has not succumbed entirely to her father's prohibition against wondering and
imagining. Her humanity emerges gradually as the novel progresses, as the result of her warm inner
fire created by her secret fancies in otherwise her lonely, mechanized existence. As her failing and
loveless marriage to the greedy and arrogant "bully of humility" Bounderby takes its toll, Louisa
reaches out, first to Stephen Blackpool, an oppressed factory worker, and then to James Harthouse, a
cynical, amoral, and thrill–seeking aristocrat who tries to seduce her. Here, the long denial of two
vital human forces, emotion and imagination, causes an explosive release of containment in Louisa,
inflicting her with adulterous yearnings that drives her to the brink of madness and to an eventual
emotional breakdown at her father's mercy. Nothing in Louisa's previous education has prepared her
to handle her emerging passions. She saves herself from disgrace just in time, helped by the
friendship of Sissy Jupe, who represents the wisdom of the heart ― a wisdom Louisa has never
known. In the end, Louisa's true nature finally overcomes her father's strictly scientific education,
and she ends up as a mature, generous, and humane young woman that dedicates her life to helping
those less fortunate than she. Tom, Louisa's only beacon in her completely barren life, is another
dismal and pathetic product of the Gradgrind philosophy of education. Self–centered and insensitive

Self-Hatred In Carrie White
Carrie's mom in the 2013 film is more interested in harming herself than harming Carrie White. In
the original version there was a sense of self–hatred, but in the latest version that self–hatred is
magnified. Margaret White's self–harm in the original version seemed like a ploy to increase the fear
of her daughter. However, in Pierce's version anytime she is on screen in the new edition it raises her
undisclosed infatuation with self–harm. In this film, it is apparent that a rape caused her unyielding
disgust of sex. This makes her mother less of an antagonist and more of a victim to sufferings rather
than a catalyst. At the beginning of the film, Margaret is in the midst of giving birth, completely
alone, and ignorant of how babies are made. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If she actually wanted to help, she could have spoken to her instead of convincing her boyfriend to
be Carrie's date to the prom. Sue could have welcomed Carrie into her inner circle and show the
other girls that Carrie isn't too bad after all. However, Sue decides to go behind her back to avoid
being seen with Carrie. The horrific massacre that takes place in both of the films could have been
avoided if Sue befriended Carrie. Which still makes the audience question whether Sue is doing this
to be friendly or if she is doing this to clear her guilty conscience. Consequently, this is the reason
why Sue in Brian De Palma's version is punished at the end of the film. After the massacre and
Carrie White's death Sue is left traumatized. In the closing scene, Sue is the only one to escape the
burning school. She envisions that she's placing flowers on the burnt out spot where Carrie's house
stood. Unexpectedly, a bloody hand reaches up through the ground and snatches her wrist. Sue
wakes up screaming in her mother's arms. Although Sue considered herself doing a good deed, she
was still punished because her intentions weren't as genuine as she would have liked to think.
However, when Carrie White murders Miss Collins, the only person that was nice to her, on the
surface it seems a bit unnecessary. Carrie White murders a lot of people in Brian De Palma's version
that seems a bit excessive. The director wasn't interested in

The Cave And Eatting Summary
The two stories in which we discuss today are The Cave and Eatting; both of them are related in

example in this scene in the Eatting, "The mule looked as if had come to inspect something...
Russell handed him one end of a roll of toilet paper, which the mule took... and then walked away
carefully, gently, drawing the toilet paper out..." There was really no reason for him to do this; he
just wanted to do for its own sake. Also in this story Russell is described as eating out a whole

How Does Dickens Present The Portrayal Of Victorian Women
In a male dominated world, does the role of women even matter? In the Victorian era, women were
expected to be innocent, loving, and interested in their husbands' business or other affiliations. In
Charles Dickens' Hard Times, he portrays the Victorian society's realistic and unrealistic views of an
ideal Victorian woman in a maledominated world. Through the portrayal of his female characters,
Dickens shows the lack of morality people had during this time period, as well as emphasizing how
an ideal Victorian woman should act. Dickens' example of an idealistic Victorian woman is Sissy
Jupe, while her contrast is Mrs. Sparsit. Louisa's character however, shows the change from a
nonidealistic to an idealistic Victorian woman. The several female characters compare and contrast
with each other throughout the novel and provide evidence of which type of woman they are, as well
as how they are ultimately rewarded or punished. Sissy Jupe exemplifies the ideal Victorian woman
in a maledominated Coketown. Throughout the novel, Sissy remains a compassionate, realistic, and
nurturing young woman. As a child, Sissy does not succumb to the system of facts introduced to her
by Mr. Gradgrind. She struggles with concepts such as arithmetic or living objectively. She shares
her failures at school with Louisa who comforts her with, 'You are more useful to my mother, and
more pleasant with yourself than I am to myself" (Dickens 55). This comment expresses how Sissy
is realistic since her

While Every Culture, Race, Community, And Family Have Their
While every culture, race, community, and family have their own definition of normalcy, there are
undisputable aspects that every being needs to pursue a successful lifestyle. With modernizing
industrialization, came a more noticeable discrepancy on what these aspects should be. In Charles
Dickens's 1854 novel, Hard Times, he explores these varying viewpoints while quite obviously
taking a stand for one perspective. Throughout the novel, one can clearly see that there are two
different models for raising a child. These models are through the guidance of Sleary's circus
members and Mr. Gradgrind. Sleary's circus has a very humanized approach to raising a child.

Sissy seemed to be the only one who knew that Louisa felt no form of love towards Mr. Bounderby.
She felt extremely sympathetic for Louisa, mourning the loss of freedom that she never truly had. At
this moment, Louisa could not bring herself to look at Sissy. She felt coldness and pride that
prohibited her from having any real feelings. Sissy was able to experience life in completely
different way that Louisa was not.
Sissy Jupe was also able to experience the wonder of imagination and exploration that other children
like the Gradgrinds were not. Children brought up by the Gradgrind system had their creativity
stifled. They lived their lives by fact and reason and were heavily discouraged from letting their
minds wonder. This mental suffocation was far different from what Sissy was taught. Because Sissy
grew up in a performing arts environment, she was exposed to the importance of creativity and
imagination. She was free to stray from the confines of fact and reason, and it was even encouraged.
Those who supported Grandgrind's system were infuriated by her failure to comply with their social
normalcy. It seemed that anytime Sissy would answer a question in M'Choakumchild's classroom,
she would be incorrect because her answers were "not in the figures at all" (43). While this public
humiliation occurred quite often in the classroom, Sissy's freedom to explore the world within

person should not avoid receiving preventive care and care for life threatening conditions due to a
fear of discrimination, violence or stigma (Levitt, 2015).
Providing culturally competent care, communicating and understanding how patients' identify

back as the American Revolutionary War era. Most agent files are compiled by looking through
transcripts and records, but there is one particular World War II mission that tops the list in the level
of significance and obscurity. In fact, according to the United Kingdom National Archives, "It is said
that the Second World War was won in Switzerland." The Rote Drei (German for "Red Three"), also
known as the Lucy Spy Ring, is difficult to comprehend and was extremely challenging to
record. The main reason for that is the only thing historians have to study are radio messages, which
were in code and many of the agents had code names. The Rote Drei was primarily a Russian
operation (with a few exceptions). Some of the only information open to the public are a few of the
agents involved. Maria Josefovna Poliakova (Code Name(s)/ Alias(es): Gisela, Mildred, Vera) was

The Second Wave Of Feminism And The Gay Liberation Movement
These two films arrive amid the second–wave of feminism in the United States. During this time,
the country saw the Post WWII era of family values, and mass consumerism. The civil rights
movement became the topic of discussion throughout the media, and college students across the
nation became political activist. The Vietnam war erupts as the main focus of the mid–60s, and
tensions increase even more as the Gay Liberation Movement blooms into full effect throughout the
60s and 70s. With all the chaos, women saw themselves as secondary and decided to spark social
movements as a way to gain equality. Gloria Steinem became the face of the movement stating,
"The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off." The main focus of the second–wave of
feminism was to gain women's power and liberation. They sought to expose domestic violence
against women, the marriage inequality, child rearing, divorce, sexual assault, sexual liberation,
birth control rights, abortion (Roe v. Wade), education for women, as well as chattering the glass
ceiling in the workplace. These two films could be said to be a written response to the movement. In
the film Halloween, the female characters are sexually liberated but are consequently tortured for
their promiscuity. The women are young, vibrant, socially aware, and are comfortable with their
sexuality. It would be safe to say that these women would be a part of this movement given the
historical context. The women in the film Carrie would

Queer Representation Of All Ages Media Essay
Queer Representation in All Ages Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s

usually in hushed tones (I remember being introduced to my uncle 's close 'friend ' each holiday) or
as something negative (I still remember the sting of being called a faggot in elementary school).
This reflected exactly how homosexuality was portrayed in media at the time. Queer characters and
homosexuality were at best portrayed in codified, 'blink–and–you 'll–miss it ' labels and affectations,
or at worst, something to laugh at, pity or even hate. As someone who still regularly watches reads

lengths of progress that has been made in queer representation in all ages media. In this paper I hope
to detail the highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all ages media and highlight the impact of
media representation. Before celebrating the strides of queer representation in all ages media, it is
important to look back at queer representation in the past. The late film scholar Vito Russo

Retributive Justice System
Retributive justice, described in its literal sense, is a criminal justice system based on punishing the
offenders rather than rehabilitating them. This is a quality often seem within Victorian literature,
considered to be the "socially acceptable ending". The villains are imprisoned or die, often left to be
suffering alone; the hero is rewarded with wealth and happiness. It gives the reader an impression of
cosmic justice; everything will work out if you are a good person. This is comforting for a person
who believes that they are a good person, regardless of whether or not they are in reality. For the
Victorian time period, where people highly valued strong morals –– and which women were often

The Gradgrind system never changes her, and she remains always honest, observant, and kind. Sissy
nevers gives up on her father, always waiting for his return. Towards the end of the book, when Mr.
Sleary is telling Mr. Gradgrind that her father may be dead, Thomas says, "She keeps the bottle he
sent her for, to this hour; and she will believe in his affection to the last minute of her life" (p.282).
Despite how she does not fit into the Gradgrind system, she never abandons them either. While that
may partially due to her waiting for her father's return, it also says that she is loyal enough to stay
with the family even after she finishes her schooling. She acts as a guide for Mr. and Mrs.
Gradgrind, as well as Louisa to return to a more normal, healthy attitude. Before Mrs. Gradgrind's
death, the woman mentions, "But there is something –– not an Ology at all –– that your father has
missed, or forgotten, Louisa... I have often sat with Sissy near me, and thought about it" (p.194).
Mrs. Gradgrind's death may have planted the seed for Louisa to come forth about her own
unhappiness and emptiness to her father after James attempts to meet with her. After Louisa breaks
down and collapses in Chapter Twelve, "Down", Sissy is the first person to assist Louisa. The older
girl questions how she can stay with her. "I felt very uncertain whether you would like to find me
here," she says at Louisa's bedside. "I have always loved you, and have always wished that you
should know it" (p.219). In Louisa's dark hour, Sissy provides the unconditional love that the broken
woman truly needs. This undoubtedly helps Louisa recover. Seeing Louisa, his favorite child,
collapse in response to how he raised her, Thomas Gradgrind realizes that a life full of facts is barely
a life at all. This is where he begins to change his own view on life. Both directly and indirectly,
Sissy inspired the necessary change in these three characters

Carrie White Compare And Contrast
Contrasting the house De Palma made into an uncanny character of its own, this house is nice–
looking and spacious; its yard and street are fertile and well–maintained; the walls appear freshly
painted and light–colored; the furniture is pleasingly organized and equipped for company; and
condemnatory male religious icons don't border the female residents and shimmer down at them as
they did in the previous version. Although some of the events that take place in the household are far
from normal, the film gives no indication that Carrie is not in a healthy environment. By
highlighting the normality of Carrie's living conditions the director removes the focus off of the
mother–daughter relations.
In the original version, there was a sense of self–hatred, but in the latest version, that self–hatred is
magnified. Margaret White's self–harm in the original version seemed like a ploy to increase the fear
of her daughter. However, in Pierce's version anytime she is on screen in the new edition it raises ...

The original version did a perfect job of making Carrie White look weak, but in the latest version,
she appears the opposite. Her being weak in the beginning made the audience feel more sympathetic
to her situation at home. Margaret White in the newer version seemed to be the weakest character in
the film, and thirty minutes into the film Carrie White is already sassing back to her mother. Also,
Carrie White disregards her curfew while she was out looking for dresses in the film leaving her
mother worried sick. Her actions in the film don't seem like an adolescent that is afraid of her
mother. Rarely are there scenes in Pierce's film where Carrie shrinks at the sound of her mother
raising her voice and abusing her. In this film, it seems as if Carrie is controlling her mother. Again,
the director wants to remove the aspect of her mother being a bully at home to focus on the bullies at

Essay on The Difference Between Sissy And Bitzer
"Give me your definition of a horse," (Pg 3) says
the eminently practical Mr. Thomas Gradgrind of Charles Dickens' unforgettable novel, Hard Times.
Can anybody really define a horse? Cecilia Jupe, also known as Sissy, was unable to answer this
question because she was, well, normal. Bitzer, the boy brought up in Coketown, the city of facts,
answered, "Quadruped. Graminivorous. Forty teeth, namely, twenty–four grinders, four eye–
teeth, and twelve incisive..." (Pg. 4). Clearly the contrast between Sissy and Bitzer can be
seen. The differences between Bitzer and Sissy are shown not only in their definitions of a horse, but
also in their physical appearance, personality, background, and the ... Show more content on

Instead, she says, between sobs, "O my dear father, my good kind father, where are you gone? You
are gone to try to do me some good, I know! You are gone away for my sake, I am sure! And how
miserable and helpless you will be without me, poor, poor Father, until you come back!" (Pg. 35)
and cries for her father rather than feel sorry for herself. She is so caring and compassionate that she
always thinks the best of things. This is probably why Jane, the younger sister of Louisa and Tom,
grew up much happier than her older siblings. She had been raised by the affectionate Sissy and
treated like a human, unlike her older siblings, who had been raised more like robots by their father,
Mr. Gradgrind. Bitzer, however, is completely different. He did not receive the love and the care the
Sissy did. Because of this, it seems as though Bitzer has no heart (but of course he does, physically).
He cares only for himself, even at the expense of others. Near the end of the novel, when Tom
Gradgrind, Jr. (also known as the whelp) tries to escape from Coketown, who, other than Bitzer, is
there to turn him in? In his own words, he says, "I am going to take young Mr. Tom back to
Coketown in order to deliver him over to Mr. Bounderby," for "I have no doubt whatever that Mr.
Bounderby will then promote me to young Mr. Tom's situation (position)" (Pg 267). Basically, he

For instance in the text Sissy states, "I was just fooling around, don't get so worked up." This shows
manipulation because Sissy has lied about intentionally drowning Emma and said it was fun in order
for Emma to think that Sissy was not trying to hurt her, so that they can be together longer. Another
example of manipulation on Sissy's part is when Dulcie states, "There–it's gone! I don't want to hear
another word about this. It's a case of teenage vandalism." This demonstrates how Sissy is
manipulative because Sissy tricked Dulcie into thinking that it was immature teenagers that
destroyed her paintings when it was Sissy. Even if Dulcie did think that Sissy did do it deep, down
inside, Sissy still manipulated her because Dulcie will think she is back and that now she has to tell
the truth about what she had really done. The last example in which Sissy has proven she can be
manipulative is when she says, "What if I throw Edith in the lake? Do you want her enough to jump

water, knowing that Emma could not swim and drown. Sissy has demonstrated throughout the novel

Women are very strong and passionate. As Beyonce once said, "Who run the world? Girls!" Her
statement is truer today, women drive the foundation of economics, business, government, etc. In
the early 1900's, women were sent to the kitchen and the washrooms to slave over the male
figurehead. Betty Smith used A Tree Grows in Brooklyn to beat down the sexual stereotypes of the
time. The male leads in the novel were portrayed upon as weak and ignorant. Francie, Katie, and

One day, Francie and Neely spotted a tricycle on the street and became obsessed with it, Sissy
decided to 'borrow' the bike and take the children on a joy ride. The owner of the tricycle called the
police and accused Sissy of stealing, which she was. The police officer sided with Sissy's claim of
just "wanting to have a little fun" because she was acting flirtatiously with him. Another instance of
when Sissy was trying to help her niece or nephew was when Francie was complaining about unfair
treatment by her teacher in school. Sissy marched down to the classroom and had a conversation
with Miss Briggs. She said to Miss Briggs, "There's a little girl named Francie Nolan in your room...
I happen to be her mother... Did it ever occur to you that Francie's got a kidney problem? The doctor
said that if she wants to go and some people don't let her go, she's liable to drop right down dead

you like to get a ride to the station house in the pie wagon and stand up in front of this here door and

constantly had pregnancy complications. She found out that a woman named Lucia was being

agreed to take the child after it was born. Even though the situation was crazy for the time period,

Summary Of ' Hard Times ' By Charles Dickens

ENGL 35701: 19th Century British Novel
Professor Elizabeth Weybright

Utilitarianism in Hard Times
During the Victorian Era, many philosophers focused on utilitarian philosophy and ways of thinking,
choosing the best decisions and actions for their own self–interest. In his novel, Hard Times, Charles
Dickens satirizes the English educational system, society, and economics, but most importantly,
through them, he criticizes the many abuses of utilitarianism. Many writers such as Bornali Nath
Dowerah and Ali Taghizadeh have done research on Dicken's work mostly focusing on utilitarianism
and its negative impacts on society especially on those of the lower class.
Charles Dickens, the most renowned social commentator of his time, criticized the ills of society as
he commiserates with those who were affected the most by social and economical abuses. According
to the article "Charles Dickens as Social Commentator and Critic" published on the Victorian Web
(www.victorianweb.org/authors/dickens/diniejko.html), Dickens was not only very successful in
exposing what was wrong with society, but also in exposing the ills of the utilitarian theory which at
the time rejected the human imagination or fancy. Utilitarianism is an ethical theory which as we
may know recommends ethical recommendations for everyday life, thus making hard decision
making easier for us. This theory mostly focuses on moral action, holding on to the belief that

The Emotional vs. Intellectual Growth of Children in "Hard...
In Hard Times, Charles Dickens explores the importance of the developments of both intellect and
emotions throughout a child's upbringing. However, to an extent, Dickens emphasizes on the greater
importance of emotional growth compared to intellectual growth; such as the much happier and
more compassionate human being Sissy is compared to Louisa and Tom, whom have had all 'fancy'
rooted out of their childhood. Furthermore, although Bitzer may not be unhappy in any way, he still
lacks compassion and an understanding of emotions as a result of his education under Gradgrind's
"fact only" system. As such, the administrator of this system, Gradgrind, also lacks the ability to
recognise emotion, and hence was unable to acknowledge his children's ... Show more content on

Even though she is aware of the reasons behind the way that she is, such is the impact that
Gradgrind's education on her that she has no means of comforting herself or repairing the damages
that she has endured. Consequently, it has demonstrated the degree to which the failure of
development of her emotions has affected Louisa and caused her young life to be filled with misery.
Nevertheless, if Louisa hadn't possessed her desire of emotions, the detrimental effects, that she is
aware of, would be lessened a great deal.
Bitzer undergoes the same figurative and factual education as Louisa and Tom, hence he too lacks
the ability to identify with emotions. On the contrary, Bitzer did not possess the "inner fire" that
Louisa had, and as a result did not feel that he had been repressed or miserable. He develops into a
cold and heartless human being and has no compassion whatsoever for anyone or anything. Bitzer's
heart is "only accessible to reason" and he feels no need to thank his educator, Gradgrind, when is
asked of him during Tom's escape. Furthermore, Bitzer notes that his "schooling was paid for" and
that when he graduated, "the bargain ended". This emphasizes how in Bitzer's mind, everything is
determined upon figures and reason, and has no room for any sort of compassion. It is through
Bitzer that Dickens demonstrates how even though on may not feel as though they are suffering
from the lack of emotional growth, it is plain to

The General Purpose Of An Estate Freeze
1. Explain what the general purpose of an estate freeze is and why it could be advantageous to
Phyllis and Freddie. An estate freeze with respect to Phyllis and Freddie's family business
corporation allows them to fix the value of their shares in the business at a particular date and create
an opportunity for Phyllis and Freddie to transfer the future growth of a business, investments, or

to wander and have her mind in places that Mr. Gradgrind thought never existed. Mia is a strong

ever imagine and she wonders about all of the greatness in life when her family was there. In "Hard

with Mr. Gradgrind, a character who only cares about the facts and learning with no imagination or
to live with the people who love her and care for her and let her be the person she wants to be. Sissy
has to choose if she wants to have a satisfying life with all the people she loves and have fun or be
taken in by Mr. Gradgrind as a servant and one who has to only learn facts with no imagination. Mia
goes through a similar situation in If I Stay. Mia's family is hit when driving and Mia knows what's
going on and can see everything and has to generate the decision if she wants to live or die. She is
unconscious, but aware of everything else and she finds out that her parents and her brother all died
in the crash and were not able to stay alive. Even with this tragedy Mia, like Sissy, composes a
strong, grave decision that she wants to live even though her family is not there anymore. Sissy
made the decision to live in a safe home that will provide her with everything she needs. In both
cases, they lose what's important to them and the people that love them, but they keep moving

3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students, their teachers (including music, gym, etc.), and their parents.
They divided the students between male and female and gave them a survey. In this survey, it had

Dickens' Attitude Toward Education in Hard Times Essay
Dickens' Attitude Toward Education in Hard Times Dickens wrote Hard Times in 1854, when the
industrial revolution was active. This influenced the way the book was written. In the first two
chapters of Hard Times, Dickens' attitudes to education are presented. He uses two characters,
Gradgrind and M'Choakumchild to show the bad views of education and the opposition to Dickens'
views. There is an immediate tension between Dickens' way of thinking and Gradgrind's and
M'Choakumchild's. Gradgrind and M'Choakumchild call the children vessels and do not use names
but numbers. The children are allowed no independent thought. While Bitzer is how he is

It is said that Gradgrind always mentally introduces himself, which suggests that he self conscious
and wants to know who he is before he shares it with anyone else. He is also organised and this is
seen when it says "with a rule and a pair of scales, and the multiplication table always in his pocket".
M'Choakumchild is introduced later in the second chapter; he is one of the one hundred and forty
schoolmasters. Instead of the way he looked being described, like Gradgrind, his intelligence was
described. The subjects and skills that he studied and has knowledge about were listed, e.g.
"biography", "algebra" and "vocal music". M'Choakumchild knows a lot about these subjects
because they are full of facts and imagination is not really needed to know about them. He believes
that fact is all that the children need to know and like Gradgrind does not believe in freethinking.
M'Chockumchild is the one who will teach the children how to be like in school life and social life.
Gradgrind and M'Choakumchild are presented as plain people who do not like change. They have
only one straight–forward idea of how the education system should be. They both see children as
empty vessels and believe that they should be seen and not heard. Dickens' shows the juxtaposition
of two pupils in the first two chapters; Sissy Jupe and Bitzer. Sissy Jupe is known as 'girl

ambitious second–generation Irish immigrant. Chapter 34 of the book illustrates some of the
hardship that women like Francie faced. The author used diction, imagery, details, language, and
syntax to control how readers depict the difficulties of various characters. In this chapter, Sissy,
Francie's aunt, pretends to carry a child after ten miscarriages. Sissy uses a baby from a disowned
16–year–old girl from Maspeth and slowly reunites her with her family. When an author uses
diction, it helps them get the theme and purpose of the selection across to the reader. Though the
underlying context of the chapter is quite serious, the connotation that is ... Show more content on

(265) The reader isn't sure of what causes Sissy to become desperate. Is it from anger?
Disappointment? Sadness? The only person's feelings we know about is from her husband. The
details that were included move the plot along to a great extent. When Sissy says she wants to "get"
another child rather than "have" one, it shows that Sissy is done with her attempts of being a
biological mother. Her husband, John sees it as "supporting another man's bastard." (265) John
ultimately does fall for Sissy's scheme, along with the whole town. The language used in A Tree In
Brooklyn is informal, due to the dialect used by the characters. Going back to John's views on
adopting a child, he ends his sentence with "see" and calls people "bums." (265) Even the narrator at
times had an informal hint to it, such as "When Francie heard Aunt Sissy tell Mama that she was
going to get a baby." It seems that in the early 1920s, immigrants weren't granted the best education
and this is shown through their words and lack of correct

Hard Times Sissy And Bitzer Analysis
In Dicken's Hard Times two characters Sissy and Bitzer are compared early in the novel. Dickens
comparison is used to further the theme that a person needs both fact and fancy to have a morally
developed personality. Dickens does this by portraying the effects of a life raised on only facts
compared to a life raised on a combination of fancy and facts. Later this comparison continues
showing how much Sissy has improved the lives of others, compared to Bitzer, who has ruined the
lives of others. By having Sissy represent a life of fancy and fact, and Bitzer represents a life solely
of fact than comparing the two Dickens is able to show the reader that facts may be nice to know,
but someone can not only have facts without fancy. This is seen

A Story-A Short Story : Mrs. Katniss
She isn't sure if she's speaking to Prim or herself anymore, and she doesn't really care. She pulls
Prim closer to her, and finds that the close contact comforts her more than the gross feverfew plant.
"You're right," comes Prim's muffled response from between them. "K–Katniss would be happy."
After a few minutes, Prim stops crying, and slowly untangles herself from Madge's hold. Madge
runs a loving hand down her hair. Someone clears their throat, and Madge looks up to find Mrs.
Everdeen staring at her with an unreadable expression on her pale face. "Thank you for the tea,"
Madge tells Prim quickly. Mrs. Everdeen's words from the night of the bombing still hang
uncomfortably between them, and Madge doesn't want to be in the presence of that hollow woman
any longer than she needs to be. "I have some...things I need to do." Prim looks confused at her
hasty departure but nods. "Ok, see you later? "Of course," Madge smiles, but quickly shoulders her
pack. She nods politely at Mrs. Everdeen, whose eyes follow her every move, and quickly leaves the
shady tree. "Oh, wait!" Prim calls after her, pulling out a small tin from her bag. "This is a salve I
made for Gale's ribs, just rub it in before he goes to sleep tonight." "Sure," Madge says, taking the
tin hastily, not even realizing what Prim just asked her to do. She decides to take a walk, since she
doesn't actually have anything to do. The women have begun cooking, and there are a couple of men
that are gutting the fish

The Plot Coketown is a grimy, smelly industrial town in northern England, its houses and skies blackened by smoke from factory chimneys. One of its leading citizens is Thomas Gradgrind, future member of Parliament and governor of the local school. Gradgrind lives with his wife and five children, including the eldest, Louisa, and Tom, Jr. When we first see Gradgrind, he is observing a typical class in his school, taught by Mr. M'Choakumchild. Bounderby lives with his housekeeper, Mrs. Sparsit, a member of the faded aristocracy. She has lost her money, but not her disdain for those she considers beneath her. Another resident of Coketown is Stephen Blackpool, a factory worker. Once happily married, Stephen is separated from his wife, a drunkard who wanders off for months at a time, only to return to shame him. Stephen is in love with Rachael, another worker, but the two of them can't marry because of divorce laws that favor the wealthy. For Stephen and Rachael, life is a "muddle." Gradgrind is elected to Parliament. It is decided that his son Tom should work at Bounderby's bank and that his daughter Louisa should marry Bounderby. Louisa tries to communicate to her father that the marriage would be a mistake, but Gradgrind refuses to hear of anything that speaks of love or sentiment. Only Sissy, who discontinues her education because she is thought "unteachable," but who stays on in the Gradgrind household, understands Louisa's plight. But Louisa is too proud to accept Sissy's compassion. When the wedding takes place, only Tom Gradgrind is truly happy, thinking his life at the Bounderby bank will be much easier with his sister around to defend him. A year after the wedding, changes have taken place in Coketown. Mrs. Sparsit now lives in an apartment at the bank, where the

  • 4. Hard Times And Pride And Prejudice Essay The novels Hard Times (1854) written by Charles Dickens (1812–1870) and Pride and Prejudice (1813) written by Jane Austen (1775–1817) are two very distinct literary works, written and published in two completely different eras. While Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice in the Georgian era, Dickens's novel Hard Times is a part of the Victorian age. These novels represent disparate worlds, that of rigid and utilitarian aspects on one hand and domestic concerns over marriage and property on the other. These novels represent women in a certain light, quite different from the each other, but the same. This paper thus aims to analyse the portrayal of female characters by Dickens and Austen in the aforementioned novels, in view of their gender identities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is an opposition with which Dickens makes extended ironic play later in the story, when Sissy becomes the homemaker, the most settled and the most respectable member of the Gradgrind family. She is,at the beginning of the book, not only of questionable parentage but a virtual orphan. From this situation there develops an ironic opposition between the ties of blood and those of affectiom, for Sissy, deprived of a family by blood, is supported by the extended, unorthodox family of the circus people and she eventually becomes Gradgrind's honorary and truest daughter. Her love is undying and is not affected by his loveless teaching. Her devotion brings about family feeling in her new father and sister as when, in Louisa's grave trouble, the once deserted girl shone like a beautiful light upon the darkness of the other (Dickens, 248). Sissy becomes the motherly, sisterly and daughterly heart of the adoptive family and her very nickname signals her familial role throughout the story, as the archetypical sister. However, the reward for this depiction of virtue is confined within the family. Although Sissy grows from child to woman in years, she does not move, like most of Dickens's good women, beyond the roles of a surrogate mother, daughter and sister to sexual maturity. The Role of the Circus Folk in 'Hard Times' by Charles Dickens The role of the circus is both complex and simple it is in itself a contradiction; it has been placed within the novel to add another dimension to the story of Coketown but also to show how fragile human nature can be. The circus folks role are complicated in their simplicity, they are of course there to carry out the role that they are paid to perform as actors or performers as well as being there for the second more complicated role of showing the notion of fancy within the novel. It is this second role which this essay will strive to discuss and discover. There are many sides to the circus it is a multi talented organisation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The modern reader may or may not have recognised from her description of her fathers job that she was a circus child. When Gradgrind hears her name he becomes annoyed and insists that she no longer allow her father to refer to her as Sissy but instead he must call her Cecilia "call yourself Cecilia" (Charles Dickens: page 4 Hard Times 1854). The fact That Sissy's father has a 'pet' name for her is important because it shows emotion within her family, she has a bond with her father that we would refer to as affection or even love, Gradgrind and Coketown do not recognise these emotions but view them as fancy, nothing serious or factual about them. The purpose of the school is to produce future citizens of Coketown that are uniform and do not question what could have been, Sissy does not fit within this mould as she feels and by feeling she has fancies which is against the principal ideas of Coketown. The reader's introduction to the circus as an event within Coketown comes in what can be considered a surprising way. Whilst Gradgrind is walking home past the circus he notice his own children who have been raised on fact alone watching the circus Gradgrind's exclamation of " In the name of wonder, Idleness and folly" (Charles Dickens: page 15, Hard Times, 1854) is an unusual ... In Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe, the hardships an adopted child faces expose their financial challenges. Throughout Persuasion by Jane Austen, adopted and foster children are given more love from the foster parents than the biological parent as the foster parents are overcompensating trying to be the best parent. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, sheds light on the problems that can occur when an adopted child tries to integrate into a household. Charles Dickens' novel, Hard Times, shows how an adopted child can change a household for the better by introducing new ways of thinking. Throughout Tess of the D'Urbervilles by ... In the beginning, it was difficult for them to get along. The characters in the movie are Claire Standish, who was in detention for skipping school to go shopping. Brian Johnson, was in detention for having a gun in his locker. Allison Reynolds, was in detention because she had nothing else to do. Andrew Clark, was in detention for tapping another student's butt cheeks together. and Jon Bender, was in detention for pulling the fire alarm. The characters moved to being an "in group" when they realized that they can all relate to each other's personal experience like dealing with problems at home, dealing with peer pressure at school and trying to please their parents. By the end of the movie, They definitely seemed to matured in their attitudes and their actions talking about each one of their issues together seemed to have helped them a little become better people. Claire Standish learned to be more generous and helpful she also learned how to not give into peer pressure. Brian Johnson, learned that getting one bad grade isn't such a big deal, he also made friends. Allison Reynolds, has a new positive outlook on life and herself. • 16. Emily Dicken And Existentialism Essay I Would Create A Clever Title, But I Don't Want My Unladylike Existentialism To Intimidate The Men For a lady in the Victorian era, thinking independently and unreservedly often leads to trouble. Dicken's character Gradgrind even instructs his daughter against such pastimes, saying "'Louisa, never wonder!'" (Dickens 89). The Victorian view of womanhood in Hard Times presents the ideal version of femininity as submissive, compassionate, and always content with her station, particularly in regards to her status beneath her husband. Sissy, the poor but kind orphan in the novel, acts with sensitivity and often naivety, which rewards her in the end. Louisa challenges this role with her initial inability to sympathize. Intelligent but aloof, she is taught to abide strictly to the rule of fact by her utilitarian father Gradgrind. This strict avidness to ignoring emotion and curiosity lead Louisa to repress her identity so she can conform to her father's principles. Her deficit of empathy, ample education, and abundance of detachment all lead to her failure to attain the ideal of Victorian womanhood. A woman that does not follow the rules society sets ... Such results as reinforcing stereotypes that this book portrays. For example, from viewing this book it could be said the main character is more attracted to fashion than his counterparts in the book, but he is also less attracted to what is "normal" for little boys to be interested in such as when he attempts to play baseball, and for likes and dislikes he is labeled a "Sissy". The book also displays blatant bullying by other kids at the main character's school towards him, and use of derogatory names such as "Sissy". Also, there is the daily indignity that Elmer must endure, that many flamboyant men must endure, whether straight or homosexual, every day when they are not accepted, or made to feel different by the dominant class (Straight people), that is portrayed very vividly in this book. In the end however there is the positive message of Elmer being accepted by his father, and other lessons throughout the book that are taught, such as using words to battle bullying opposed to violence, as demonstrated by Elmer's quip while playing baseball "Do I point out YOUR shortcomings?" (Fierstein,2005, p.7). Again this was a good book for exposing children to the fact that people act different, but just because they act different does not mean that there is anything wrong with ... Set in the ever shifting world of the Industrial Revolution, Charles Dickens' novel Hard Times begins with a description of a utilitarian paradise created by the illustrious and "eminently practical" Mr. Gradgrind, a world that follows a prescribed set of logically laid–out facts. However, readers soon realize that Gradgrind's modern utopia is only a simulacrum, belied by the damnation of lives devoid of elements that feed the heart and soul, as well as the mind. As the years progress, the weaknesses of Gradgrind's carefully constructed system become painfully apparent, especially in his children Louisa and Tom, and in the poor workers employed under one Mr. Josiah Bounderby, a wealthy factory owner who is a subscriber to Gradgrind's ... Her humanity emerges gradually as the novel progresses, as the result of her warm inner fire created by her secret fancies in otherwise her lonely, mechanized existence. As her failing and loveless marriage to the greedy and arrogant "bully of humility" Bounderby takes its toll, Louisa reaches out, first to Stephen Blackpool, an oppressed factory worker, and then to James Harthouse, a cynical, amoral, and thrill–seeking aristocrat who tries to seduce her. Here, the long denial of two vital human forces, emotion and imagination, causes an explosive release of containment in Louisa, inflicting her with adulterous yearnings that drives her to the brink of madness and to an eventual emotional breakdown at her father's mercy. Nothing in Louisa's previous education has prepared her to handle her emerging passions. She saves herself from disgrace just in time, helped by the friendship of Sissy Jupe, who represents the wisdom of the heart ― a wisdom Louisa has never known. In the end, Louisa's true nature finally overcomes her father's strictly scientific education, and she ends up as a mature, generous, and humane young woman that dedicates her life to helping those less fortunate than she. In the original version there was a sense of self–hatred, but in the latest version that self–hatred is magnified. Margaret White's self–harm in the original version seemed like a ploy to increase the fear of her daughter. However, in Pierce's version anytime she is on screen in the new edition it raises her undisclosed infatuation with self–harm. In this film, it is apparent that a rape caused her unyielding disgust of sex. This makes her mother less of an antagonist and more of a victim to sufferings rather than a catalyst. The horrific massacre that takes place in both of the films could have been avoided if Sue befriended Carrie. Which still makes the audience question whether Sue is doing this to be friendly or if she is doing this to clear her guilty conscience. There was really no reason for him to do this; he just wanted to do for its own sake. • 30. How Does Dickens Present The Portrayal Of Victorian Women In a male dominated world, does the role of women even matter? In the Victorian era, women were expected to be innocent, loving, and interested in their husbands' business or other affiliations. In Charles Dickens' Hard Times, he portrays the Victorian society's realistic and unrealistic views of an ideal Victorian woman in a maledominated world. Through the portrayal of his female characters, Dickens shows the lack of morality people had during this time period, as well as emphasizing how an ideal Victorian woman should act. Dickens' example of an idealistic Victorian woman is Sissy Jupe, while her contrast is Mrs. Sparsit. Louisa's character however, shows the change from a nonidealistic to an idealistic Victorian woman. The several female characters compare and contrast with each other throughout the novel and provide evidence of which type of woman they are, as well as how they are ultimately rewarded or punished. Sissy Jupe exemplifies the ideal Victorian woman in a maledominated Coketown. Throughout the novel, Sissy remains a compassionate, realistic, and nurturing young woman. As a child, Sissy does not succumb to the system of facts introduced to her by Mr. Gradgrind. She struggles with concepts such as arithmetic or living objectively. While Every Culture, Race, Community, And Family Have Their While every culture, race, community, and family have their own definition of normalcy, there are undisputable aspects that every being needs to pursue a successful lifestyle. With modernizing industrialization, came a more noticeable discrepancy on what these aspects should be. In Charles Dickens's 1854 novel, Hard Times, he explores these varying viewpoints while quite obviously taking a stand for one perspective. Throughout the novel, one can clearly see that there are two different models for raising a child. These models are through the guidance of Sleary's circus members and Mr. Gradgrind. Queer Representation Of All Ages Media Essay Queer Representation in All Ages Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in the media I consumed. Being gay was something that was never discussed. If it was brought up, it was usually in hushed tones (I remember being introduced to my uncle 's close 'friend ' each holiday) or as something negative (I still remember the sting of being called a faggot in elementary school). This reflected exactly how homosexuality was portrayed in media at the time. Queer characters and homosexuality were at best portrayed in codified, 'blink–and–you 'll–miss it ' labels and affectations, or at worst, something to laugh at, pity or even hate. As someone who still regularly watches reads comics, watches Saturday morning cartoons and plays video games, it is so exciting to discover the lengths of progress that has been made in queer representation in all ages media. In this paper I hope to detail the highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all ages media and highlight the impact of media representation. Before celebrating the strides of queer representation in all ages media, it is important to look back at queer representation in the past. (Pg. 35) and cries for her father rather than feel sorry for herself. She is so caring and compassionate that she always thinks the best of things. This is probably why Jane, the younger sister of Louisa and Tom, grew up much happier than her older siblings. She had been raised by the affectionate Sissy and treated like a human, unlike her older siblings, who had been raised more like robots by their father, Mr. Gradgrind. Bitzer, however, is completely different. He did not receive the love and the care the Sissy did. Because of this, it seems as though Bitzer has no heart (but of course he does, physically). Sissy And Andy Jackson's Tears Of A Tiger While the character Sissy from Deep and Dark and Dangerous and Andy Jackson from Tears of a Tiger both seem lonely to the reader, they differ because Sissy is manipulative whereas Andy is guilty. In both stories, the reader is unsure if the character's mind company. However, Sissy proves to be manipulative multiple times in Deep and Dark and Dangerous. Andy's guilt is evident through his actions in the novel of Tears of a Tiger. Characterization plays an important role in the reader's understanding of character development. Readers of Tears of a Tiger and Deep and Dark and Dangerous find Sissy and Andy to both be lonely. For example in Deep and Dark and Dangerous Sissy states, "Now you feel sorry for me. You don't really like me. Nobody ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance in the text Sissy states, "I was just fooling around, don't get so worked up." This shows manipulation because Sissy has lied about intentionally drowning Emma and said it was fun in order for Emma to think that Sissy was not trying to hurt her, so that they can be together longer. Another example of manipulation on Sissy's part is when Dulcie states, "There–it's gone! I don't want to hear another word about this. It's a case of teenage vandalism." This demonstrates how Sissy is manipulative because Sissy tricked Dulcie into thinking that it was immature teenagers that destroyed her paintings when it was Sissy. Even if Dulcie did think that Sissy did do it deep, down inside, Sissy still manipulated her because Dulcie will think she is back and that now she has to tell the truth about what she had really done. The last example in which Sissy has proven she can be manipulative is when she says, "What if I throw Edith in the lake? Do you want her enough to jump in and get her? This shows how Sissy is conniving because she deceived Emma to leap into the water, knowing that Emma could not swim and drown. Sissy has demonstrated throughout the novel to be ... Her statement is truer today, women drive the foundation of economics, business, government, etc. In the early 1900's, women were sent to the kitchen and the washrooms to slave over the male figurehead. Betty Smith used A Tree Grows in Brooklyn to beat down the sexual stereotypes of the time. The male leads in the novel were portrayed upon as weak and ignorant. Francie, Katie, and Sissy were all forceful characters that steered the direction of the book. The owner of the tricycle called the police and accused Sissy of stealing, which she was. The police officer sided with Sissy's claim of just "wanting to have a little fun" because she was acting flirtatiously with him. Another instance of when Sissy was trying to help her niece or nephew was when Francie was complaining about unfair treatment by her teacher in school. Sissy marched down to the classroom and had a conversation with Miss Briggs. She said to Miss Briggs, "There's a little girl named Francie Nolan in your room... I happen to be her mother... Did it ever occur to you that Francie's got a kidney problem? The doctor said that if she wants to go and some people don't let her go, she's liable to drop right down dead from overloaded kidneys. How would you like her drop dead right in your room? And how would you like to get a ride to the station house in the pie wagon and stand up in front of this here door and the judge and say you wouldn't let her leave the room? See that cop? That's my husband" (p. 157). No matter how absurd the claim was, Sissy was always willing to help out. Even though Sissy was lying, she had good intentions and a sweet heart. Lastly, Sissy had always wanted to have a baby but constantly had pregnancy complications. She found out that a woman named Lucia was being mistreated because her family did not want her to go through with having a child. Sissy happily agreed to take the child after it was born. • 56. Summary Of ' Hard Times ' By Charles Dickens Angelina Almanzar ENGL 35701: 19th Century British Novel Professor Elizabeth Weybright 27 June 2016 Utilitarianism in Hard Times During the Victorian Era, many philosophers focused on utilitarian philosophy and ways of thinking, choosing the best decisions and actions for their own self–interest. In his novel, Hard Times, Charles Dickens satirizes the English educational system, society, and economics, but most importantly, through them, he criticizes the many abuses of utilitarianism. Many writers such as Bornali Nath Dowerah and Ali Taghizadeh have done research on Dicken's work mostly focusing on utilitarianism and its negative impacts on society especially on those of the lower class. Charles Dickens, the most renowned social commentator of his time, criticized the ills of society as he commiserates with those who were affected the most by social and economical abuses. According to the article "Charles Dickens as Social Commentator and Critic" published on the Victorian Web (www.victorianweb.org/authors/dickens/diniejko.html), Dickens was not only very successful in exposing what was wrong with society, but also in exposing the ills of the utilitarian theory which at the time rejected the human imagination or fancy. Utilitarianism is an ethical theory which as we may know recommends ethical recommendations for everyday life, thus making hard decision making easier for us. This theory mostly focuses on moral action, holding on to the belief that people's happiness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Hard Times, Charles Dickens explores the importance of the developments of both intellect and emotions throughout a child's upbringing. However, to an extent, Dickens emphasizes on the greater importance of emotional growth compared to intellectual growth; such as the much happier and more compassionate human being Sissy is compared to Louisa and Tom, whom have had all 'fancy' rooted out of their childhood. Furthermore, although Bitzer may not be unhappy in any way, he still lacks compassion and an understanding of emotions as a result of his education under Gradgrind's "fact only" system. Consequently, it has demonstrated the degree to which the failure of development of her emotions has affected Louisa and caused her young life to be filled with misery. Nevertheless, if Louisa hadn't possessed her desire of emotions, the detrimental effects, that she is aware of, would be lessened a great deal. Bitzer undergoes the same figurative and factual education as Louisa and Tom, hence he too lacks the ability to identify with emotions. On the contrary, Bitzer did not possess the "inner fire" that Louisa had, and as a result did not feel that he had been repressed or miserable. He develops into a cold and heartless human being and has no compassion whatsoever for anyone or anything. Bitzer's heart is "only accessible to reason" and he feels no need to thank his educator, Gradgrind, when is asked of him during Tom's escape. Furthermore, Bitzer notes that his "schooling was paid for" and that when he graduated, "the bargain ended". This emphasizes how in Bitzer's mind, everything is determined upon figures and reason, and has no room for any sort of compassion. It is through Bitzer that Dickens demonstrates how even though on may not feel as though they are suffering from the lack of emotional growth, it is plain to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. The General Purpose Of An Estate Freeze 1. Explain what the general purpose of an estate freeze is and why it could be advantageous to Phyllis and Freddie. An estate freeze with respect to Phyllis and Freddie's family business corporation allows them to fix the value of their shares in the business at a particular date and create an opportunity for Phyllis and Freddie to transfer the future growth of a business, investments, or other assets to other taxpayers, children or other designated beneficiaries. By freezing a beneficiary's estate, they will have to pay tax on the growth which results in a tax deferral until the beneficiary passes away or they will have to dispose of his/her shares. Phyllis and Freddie can redeem the preferred shares at any time; the preferred shareholder still has control over the assets. If they qualify as a qualified Small Business Corporation, one can multiply the number of capital gains exemptions by increasing the number of taxpayers who are shareholders. In addition, Phyllis and Freddie can transfer the asset to the children to who they would like to appoint from their company. • 62. Queer Representation Of All Age Media Essay Queer Representation in All Age Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in the media I consumed. As someone who still regularly reads comics, watches Saturday morning cartoons and play video games, it is so exciting to discover the lengths of progress that has been made in queer representation in all age media. In this paper I hope to detail the highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all age media and highlight the positive and negative impact of media representation. Before we can look forward, we must look back at queer representation of the past. The late film scholar Vito Russo painstakingly researched the evolution of queer representation in cinema in his landmark book The Celluloid Closet. In both the book and its documentary of the same name, Russo details the earliest portrayal of homosexuality in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sissy also is an imaginative character that likes to wander and have her mind in places that Mr. Gradgrind thought never existed. Mia is a strong witted character that wonders what her life is going to be like without her family, that no one could ever imagine and she wonders about all of the greatness in life when her family was there. In "Hard Times" Sissy's father runs away from her and abandons her and Sissy is left with the decision to go with Mr. Gradgrind, a character who only cares about the facts and learning with no imagination or to live with the people who love her and care for her and let her be the person she wants to be. Sissy has to choose if she wants to have a satisfying life with all the people she loves and have fun or be taken in by Mr. Gradgrind as a servant and one who has to only learn facts with no imagination. • 72. Dickens' Attitude Toward Education in Hard Times Essay Dickens' Attitude Toward Education in Hard Times Dickens wrote Hard Times in 1854, when the industrial revolution was active. This influenced the way the book was written. In the first two chapters of Hard Times, Dickens' attitudes to education are presented. He uses two characters, Gradgrind and M'Choakumchild to show the bad views of education and the opposition to Dickens' views. There is an immediate tension between Dickens' way of thinking and Gradgrind's and M'Choakumchild's. Gradgrind and M'Choakumchild call the children vessels and do not use names but numbers. The children are allowed no independent thought. While Bitzer is how he is "supposed" to be, Sissy Jupe is free spirited and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is said that Gradgrind always mentally introduces himself, which suggests that he self conscious and wants to know who he is before he shares it with anyone else. He is also organised and this is seen when it says "with a rule and a pair of scales, and the multiplication table always in his pocket". M'Choakumchild is introduced later in the second chapter; he is one of the one hundred and forty schoolmasters. Instead of the way he looked being described, like Gradgrind, his intelligence was described. The subjects and skills that he studied and has knowledge about were listed, e.g. "biography", "algebra" and "vocal music". M'Choakumchild knows a lot about these subjects because they are full of facts and imagination is not really needed to know about them. He believes that fact is all that the children need to know and like Gradgrind does not believe in freethinking. M'Chockumchild is the one who will teach the children how to be like in school life and social life. Gradgrind and M'Choakumchild are presented as plain people who do not like change. They have only one straight–forward idea of how the education system should be. They both see children as empty vessels and believe that they should be seen and not heard. Chapter 34 of the book illustrates some of the hardship that women like Francie faced. The author used diction, imagery, details, language, and syntax to control how readers depict the difficulties of various characters. In this chapter, Sissy, Francie's aunt, pretends to carry a child after ten miscarriages. Sissy uses a baby from a disowned 16–year–old girl from Maspeth and slowly reunites her with her family. When an author uses diction, it helps them get the theme and purpose of the selection across to the reader. Though the underlying context of the chapter is quite serious, the connotation that is ... The only person's feelings we know about is from her husband. The details that were included move the plot along to a great extent. When Sissy says she wants to "get" another child rather than "have" one, it shows that Sissy is done with her attempts of being a biological mother. Her husband, John sees it as "supporting another man's bastard." (265) John ultimately does fall for Sissy's scheme, along with the whole town. The language used in A Tree In Brooklyn is informal, due to the dialect used by the characters. Going back to John's views on adopting a child, he ends his sentence with "see" and calls people "bums." (265) Even the narrator at times had an informal hint to it, such as "When Francie heard Aunt Sissy tell Mama that she was going to get a baby." Dickens comparison is used to further the theme that a person needs both fact and fancy to have a morally developed personality. Dickens does this by portraying the effects of a life raised on only facts compared to a life raised on a combination of fancy and facts. Later this comparison continues showing how much Sissy has improved the lives of others, compared to Bitzer, who has ruined the lives of others.
