The Compression Ratio Of A Diesel Engine
The compression ratio is the ratio of the maximum to minimum volume in the cylinder of an
internal combustion engine. The compression ratio for a diesel engine usually ranges between 15:1
and 23:1. The reason being for this high compression ratio is purposely higher causing the
temperature of the air to rise. A four–stroke engine has a camshaft which is used to rotate at half the
speed of the crankshaft. (1:2 Ratio) Therefore the crankshaft will need to rotate twice for the
camshaft to make one rotation. The four–stroke cycle, is a cycle that uses intake, exhaust, fuel
injection, compression and power to accomplish one complete cycle of a diesel engine. The piston
moves upward and approaches before top dead center (BTDC) as the camshaft lobe starts to lift the
cam follower. As the valve is taken up the intake valve is then pushed downward and the valve
opens. The intake stroke begins while the exhaust valve is still open. The flow of exhaust gases
creates low pressure condition within the cylinder and will pull in fresh air. Compression occurs
after bottom dead center (ABDC) the intake valve starts to close. At bottom, top, dead center
(BTDC) the intake valve is then fully closed. The air charge at this point is at normal pressure. The
piston at bottom top dead center (BTDC) has traveled half of its stroke reducing the volume in the
cylinder by half doubling the temperature to 160F. With a piston area of 9.6 in. sq. the pressure in
the cylinder releases a force of 7135lbs

What Is The Fuel System?
engine, a wide–band oxygen sensor was purchased from ECOTRONS. The wide–band sensor is
capable of measuring the actual air–fuel ratio in the engine's exhaust, which allows for accurate
tuning of the ECU's fuel map to optimize fuel efficiency. The fuel map plots the desired (tunable)
air–fuel ratio versus engine load (measured in intake manifold absolute pressure) and engine speed.
The ECU reads the engine speed and manifold pressure from the sensors to look up values for the
required air fuel ratio to be sent to the engine. Currently, the ECU is mapped with a base fuel table
for a general 50cc Honda engine. Further engine testing on the dynamometer will allow for

crankshaft extension of the Briggs and Stratton motor uses a metal collar to connect to a centrifugal

When the motor is started the rotation of the crankshaft extension engages the centrifugal clutch and
allows a shaft extension to spin. This shaft rotation is measured by a sensor located at the end of the
wheel cart and is relayed to the computer. The rotational speed of the engine must match the rotation
of the shaft extension because the engine is rigidly connected to the dynamometer shaft.
The output torque is calculated using the distance from the center of the motor's rotation to the load
cell and the load produced by the load cell. The load cell is connected via an analog–to–digital
board on a desktop computer that records the data in LabView. By using a sensor to measure the
motor's rotational velocity, horsepower can also be calculated with LabView programs.

engine. The reason was that when the air is compressed it puts pressure on all the atoms. This causes
the atoms to hit each other, causing friction, and move even faster. These rapid movements cause a
massive amount of heat. This excess heat caused less oxygen to get to the cylinders which means a
loss of potential power. Our answer to this dilemma was the aftercooler. Aftercoolers are used to
lower the temperature of the air after it comes out of the turbo but before it enters the engine. By
lowering the temperature the air becomes denser and holds more oxygen. This increase in oxygen
provides an increase in power. There are three types of aftercoolers. The first is an Air–to Air
Aftercooler (ATAAC). With the air–to–air system, a separate cooler core is placed in front of the
engine. The engine fan then passed outside air across the cooler. The outside air is much colder than
the compressed air in the cooler. This difference causes the compressed air to drop in temperature by
losing its heat to the outside air. This method is very common on most on–highway trucks since they

When it comes to choosing a motor, there are tons of options to choose from. Although horsepower
is often the main concern for some people, there are many other factors you want to look at before
making up your mind on what you want. During this review I will compare the ls1 and lt1 motors,
looking at all the differences and similarities and decide which one has the most bang for its buck.
"This shouldn't surprise you to much, but the LS1 was way more powerful out of the factory than

The lt1 cylinder block is basically no different than your regular small block chevy, it is made of
cast iron. A cast iron cylinder block is heavy, but it is also very strong. The ls1 on the other hand is
an aluminum y–block design. The aluminum cylinder block is a lot lighter than a cast iron cylinder
block and it also helps keep the motor more cool. The y–block part of it just means increased
strength and durability. The ls1 block also came with a bigger camshaft core, which allows you to
have a bigger camshaft without messing up the camshaft bearings. Although the ls1 still appears to
be a better buy at this point, we now come to one of the most important factors in choosing a motor;
price. The ls1 is a few hundred dollars more than the lt1, is that a few hundred dollars more you're
willing to pay? In my opinion the ls1 is worth that few hundred extra. The ls1 has nearly 50
horsepower more than the lt1, weighs less, and is just as easy to find aftermarket parts for. While I
would still rather have the ls1 over the lt1, I would have to say the lt1 has more bang for its buck.
The lt1 makes close to the same amount of power as the ls1 and costs a pretty good amount less

The concept of variable valve timing has existed for some time. Unfortunately, the ability to achieve
truly variable valve timing has eluded automotive manufacturers. Most variable timing mechanisms
were created as tools for the automotive engineer. Their use was limited to the laboratory as a means
of testing multiple, "virtual" cam profiles. These early camless engines allowed for the designers to
choose the best cams for the engine under scrutiny, but were less than energy efficient. Furthermore,
they were laboratory machines and were not capable of being mass produced or utilized in an
automobile. There have been a few attempts at developing production models of camless engines,
most notably by Ford, but the use of solenoids has impeded their implementation. Using solenoids
to control hydraulic fluid and ultimately the opening and closing of the engine valves introduces its
own limitations. The solenoids consume considerable energy and are a binary control device – they

Personal Narrative: My First Car
I am seriously exited. I'm getting to that age now where I'm going to be able to drive in less than a
year. At some point I am going to need a car. I have made a criteria for myself that my first car will
need to meet. My first car will have to get good gas mileage, it will have to be four doors, has to be
sporty, and has to look alright. There are many cars that I could have chosen. I chose the Honda
Civic SI of any year and the Acura Integra GSR of any year. Both of these cars have similarities and
differences that make them desirable. I haven't chosen yet but I'll have to soon because I am going
to be 16 in no time at all. There are some similarities that both of the cars have. For me to get either
car, they need to meet the requirements that I made for myself in getting a first car. Both of the cars
do Both of the cars get good gas mileage, they both have four doors, and they are both relatively

Another method uses a non–stretch oil–resistant, toothed rubber drive belt which engages with

seal the key, torque the bolt to spec with blue Loctite. Place the front main seal on the timing cover
and place the oil pan with gasket on the engine. Apply RTV to where the front/rear main seals meet
the base gasket and finger tighten bolts. Wait one hour to torque bolts to specs to allow RTV to set
up. Install the lifters and dog–bones to complete the short block. With the short block or rotating
assembly complete, cylinder heads are next to install. If head studs are being used install them first

established new regulations for nitric oxides, and sulfur oxide emissions which are the by–products
of fuel combustion. Electronic fuel injection systems play a important role in the reduction of these
emissions by improving the efficiency of fuel combustion.
The main function of the fuel oil injection system is to provide the right amount of fuel at the right
time. In order for fuel injection systems to work, there must be a means of measuring the fuel supply
and a way to time the delivery and atomization of the fuel. This paper was completed in order to
examine and compare two types of electronically controlled fuel injection systems, mechanically
driven injection and electronic injection. The two types of systems we researched were the Sulzer
RTA Series and the Sulzer RT–Flex.

The compression ratio for a diesel engine usually ranges between 15:1 and 23:1. The reason being for this high compression ratio is purposely higher causing the temperature of the air to rise. As the valve is taken up the intake valve is then pushed downward and the valve opens. The intake stroke begins while the exhaust valve is still open. The flow of exhaust gases creates low pressure condition within the cylinder and will pull in fresh air. Compression occurs after bottom dead center (ABDC) the intake valve starts to close. At bottom, top, dead center (BTDC) the intake valve is then fully closed. The air charge at this point is at normal pressure. The piston at bottom top dead center (BTDC) has traveled half of its stroke reducing the volume in the cylinder by half doubling the temperature to 160F.
