A Few Miles South Of Soledad, The Salinas River
A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has
slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool. On one side of the river the golden foothill slopes curve up to
the strong and rocky Gabilan Mountains, but on the valley side the water is lined with trees– willows fresh and green with every spring, carrying in
their lower leaf junctures the debris of the winter 's flooding; and sycamores with mottled, white, recumbent limbs and branches that arch over the pool.
On the sandy bank under the trees the leaves lie deep and so crisp that a lizard makes a great skittering if he runs among them. Rabbits come out of
the brush to sit on the sand in the evening, and the damp flats are covered with the night tracks of 'coons, and with the spread pads of dogs from the
ranches, and with the split–wedge tracks of deer that come to drink in the dark.
There is a path through the willows and among the sycamores, a path beaten hard by boys coming down from the ranches to swim in the deep pool,
and beaten hard by tramps who come wearily down from the highway in the evening to jungle–up near water. In front of the low horizontal limb of a
giant sycamore there is an ash pile made by many fires; the limb is worn smooth by men who have sat on it.
Evening of a hot day started the little wind to moving among the leaves. The shade climbed up the hills toward the top. On

My Vacation Essay
"Rinnnngggggg!" The final bell rang and the doors flew wide open. "Bang!" Lockers are slammed shut. Everyone is rushing through the hall to
get to their busses and cars. Summer is finally here. Everyone is ready to sleep in, hang out with friends, and go on their vacations. Summer can
get boring when you have nothing to do and when you are required to wait a month to go on your vacation. My family and I were going to Florida.
The great news was that the month flew by fast. Somewhere at the end of June we started packing our bags and were ready to leave. Our relatives and
friends tagged along, so it is going to be twice the fun. The drive there was about twenty hours long with all the stops we made, but I'm pretty sure it
was way longer. It felt like we drove for ages. The cars were crowded with all the kids that came with us, so we made many stops. We stopped at tons
of gas stations and places to eat. We always switched cars so we would not be as bored and we could be with our friends. While driving, we stopped at a
hotel to rest from all the driving and sleep in a comfortable bed. The hotel had amazing waffles that you got to cook by yourself. They had delicious
flavors that you can add on top of your waffles. There was also a pool so we went to go swim and we had tons of fun. Unfortunately, there was a lot of
chlorine so we were all smelly. When we finally got there we went to get our hotel keys. The first thing we saw was the pool. We all wanted to go
swimming, but the

Personal Narrative: Moving Back To The Pool
"Hurry up!" yelled my sister. "Give me a second!" I hollered back. I took my sweet time smoothing the sunscreen to my caramel skin. I hopped down
the stairs, taking three steps at a time, as I did when I was rushing. Peering out the open front door, I could see everyone was already on their way to the
pool. I hurried to catch up, moving as quick as a firemen answering a call. "Who's coming with us today?" I asked my sister. "Just about everyone,"
she sighed as we slowly walked to the pool at the end of our apartment complex. I wondered what was bothering her, but the thought quickly slipped
my mind as excitement took its place. As we got closer to the pool I could hear the joyful sounds of children, clearly we weren't the only ones going.

Sammy's Characters In A & P By John Updike
Morals are standards or beliefs that most people use for guidance in their lives and turn to when making decisions. A person's character is composed
of their set morals, so the actions many people take are dictated by what they believe in. In the short story "A&P" by John Updike, main character
Sammy finds himself in a situation where his authority figure took action against three teenage girls in a way that Sammy did not believe to be right.
This position was especially difficult for Sammy to be in, due to wanting to express his own beliefs while also knowing he is not in a place of
command to request a change from his boss. While reading "A&P" I was able to relate to Sammy on a personal level, as I have been in a similar
circumstance and felt my boss acted in ways that went against my beliefs. Sammy and I have both exhibited impulsive acts of defiance towards higher
authority figures, due to circumstances in which we felt our integrity was being compromised in our place of work.
Sammy's strong feelings towards three girls in his store, whom he did not previously know, led him to make a choice that affected both him and his
family. Sammy believed his boss, Lengel, was in the wrong to state the store policy of, "dressing decently" (378), to the three girls wearing bathing
suits. Lengel also said how the store, "isn't the beach", so the girls should have their, "shoulders covered" (378). Sammy felt that Lengel was rude while
talking to the girls and stated that Lengel,

Good Times Become Good Memories, And Bad Times Become Good...
"Good times become good memories, and bad times become good lessons." I have had many good and bad memories but this is one of the most
memorable ones I have ever had. The most important and vivid memory that seems like it was just yesterday was when my dad had to go to Iraq in
2009 for a year. At the time I was 5 and didn't realize the risks of him going over seas with the Army. He could get injured or even killed. I was so
depressed when I finally understood that he would be gone for a whole year. He would leave when I was 5 and come back when I was 6. He would
miss a whole year of my life, and he would miss my 1st year of school(kindergarten). I remember exactly where I was when my parents told me he was
going away, when we had his going away party, and when he actually left. I remember all of my emotions. It was a nice sunny day and my parents
decided we were going out to dinner. Little did I know it was the dinner that would change my life. We decided to go to Max & Erma's because that
was my favorite restaurant at the time when I was 4. They had the ice cream bar, and I loved it. I was wearing a pretty dress because earlier that day I
was playing outside and I got very dirty. After deciding where to eat, we went inside, and I had a bath to get cleaned up. When we were all ready we
got into our car and drove up to Gibsonia to go to Max & Ermas. It was very bright and sunny. It was a long drive and it felt like it took forever
because I was so excited to get ice

Personal Narrative: Digging Down The Llano River
It was my junior year, in a small town that is unknown to many, Junction, TX. I was there with a group from school for a three–day competition. One
of the main activities that weekend was to go tubing down the Llano River for about an hour. My group and I approached the area where the tubes
were being distributed. Behind that day's activity leaders, there was a stack of orange life–jackets and as we were each handed a glossy tube, we were
asked if we wanted one. We were told they were not necessary since the area we would be tubing in would be at most three feet deep. "Even if you
cannot swim, you should be fine without a jacket, the water is not deep at all," I decided not to pick up a life jacket since it was not a requirement. We

According to the instructor, the river was supposed to be no more than three feet deep, yet her head was out of our sight. We were very alarmed,
so we swam furiously as quickly as we could to where she was. After a few minutes of struggling to get away from the rocky areas we managed to
get her tube back and threw it to her. As we were recovering from the incident and getting back into completing our activity, I felt something thick and
slimy wrapped along my leg which caused me to start panicking once again. It took me a few seconds to realize that it was just a cluster of plants and
twigs. After the alarming incident, I was extremely shaken but thought that nothing bad could happen again. I was wrong. I then noticed that the
aftermath of the collision resulted in a small opening in my tube, which allowed the air to begin flowing out. I got stuck and could no longer move
away in the water without sinking. As I had discovered earlier, the water was quite deep. I once again felt worried and so many thoughts were rushing
through my mind. My friends tried helping me but the currents dragged them away, further down the

Desicions Without Grandpa
As another Team Meeting broke up, Steven plodded back to his desk where his projections for the quarter ahead were waiting to be completed. He
gazed out the hermetically sealed windows which overlooked the sprawling city, his eyes searching for green spaces.
He sighed. He had thought transferring to the City from the village would be more exciting and challenging but it had not lived up to his expectations
and he was frustrated at the endless meetings and emphasis on figures and targets. He was also missing his friends and family as he tried to settle into a
new life. City people rushed everywhere and appeared busy and always having somewhere to go. He felt invisible.
He could never imagine walking along any street in his home village and not speaking to a single person. Older folks knew him either as John and
Nettie's son or Peter's grandson. Others knew him from school or shared activities. Almost everyone who passed by his Grandpa's workshop, popped
their head in the ever– open door to call out a greeting.
He pictured his Grandpa's workshop in the ivy–clad stone building attached to the family home. He could see the dust motes dancing in the sunlight
streaming through the open door; Grandpa sitting in the chair he made for himself or standing at his workbench, his tools all hanging in their proper
places on the wall behind; his stock of wood stored on open shelves out of reach of the sunlight. There was always the dry hot smell of wood shavings
and occasionally the

Summer always started with a freezing splash into my small, above–ground pool that I practically begged my dad to get me. The month before school
lets out, I always started to remind my dad about putting up our pool. It takes 18 hours to completely fill up with the freezing water from our well. In
my opinion, while it's still filling is the best time to swim. Cold and shallow! My mom never liked me swimming before it filled to the top because the
pool sits on a concrete slab and if we slip or fall we could "seriously injure" ourselves. I never cared, though. If we had to get in to smooth out the
bottom, I would stay in until sunset. Although the past few years have been entirely different, no one wanted to help put the pool up because it's ... Show

I knew right away that it was broken. I surfaced and touched my smashed nose that had blood flowing into my hands and calmly told Jalyn, "I think
my nose is broken." Rushing to the side of the pool, I told Jalyn to go find my dad, but she didn't move. She was in shock, I think. Once she finally
got my dad, there was a huge pool of my blood in my hands and beside the ladder. I still hadn't started freaking out until my brilliant father said, and
I quote, "Let me fix it" as he reached for my nose. I backed into the pool, still bleeding, beginning to freak out because I thought about the how
much it will hurt to get it fixed. After much protest, I climbed the ladder, shaking from fear, got into the car, and waited for one of my parents to
take me to the Lyons ER. My mom ended up taking me because my dad couldn't take my crying, but he still had to take Jalyn home who was freaking
out just as much as I was.
The car ride to the ER seemed to take forever and so did the waiting in the empty Emergency Room. As I held a paper towel up to my nose, I
realized I was still in my wet swimming suit wrapped up in a soaking towel. I forgot extra clothes! Luckily, my mom thought ahead and brought some,
but she made me wait until they nurses came, who had tons of warm blankets! Although I never got warm until I changed and washed all the blood off
of me, It helped me calm down, especially when the nurse told me that they won't snap my bones back into place.

My Fear Of Drowning
Everyone has a greatest fear whether it be from fear of dolls to fear of death. Fear is characterized by a feeling of terror or dread caused by an object
that you believe to be harmful. All fears are caused by an event that has happened to someone that traumatizes them for life. A fear is sometimes
unovercomable and this may be because to overcome it one must be a certain characteristic. For example, to overcome the fear of ugliness one must
lose weight and sometimes acquire surgery. My greatest fear is the idea ofdrowning and this is a fear of many. I do not have a certain characteristic to
acquire before overcoming my fear of drowning except for knowledge of pool etiquette and rules. To understand one's fear the information about the
traumatizing event must be presented. Also when they found out the fear existed and how one overcame, if did, the fear.
Fear of drowning is my greatest fear because when I was eight I drowned in a clear, blue, treacherous pool by the hotel with the dark
burgundy–colored brick and cream–colored doors. I remember my cousins laugh whenever someone went the wrong way as they were playing marco
polo. I was sitting on the scorching cement by the pool when I decided I wanted to cool down and play with everyone else. I did not have the
understanding of what the big, black numbers by the pool meant, all I saw was six and dived in. As soon as I dove in, I felt the lack of air, replaced by
water, reaching my lungs as I tried to stand and breathe

Descriptive Essay About Swimming
Here I was standing in front of the block, watching the person in front of me swim. I can't do this, I think. I hear Julia in my head saying, "Just
only breathe like twice, on the first 25, ok?" and with that I felt a wave of sickness. I was so nervous I was going to throw up. How could I swim
25 yards without breathing more than twice? I would come in last, I just knew it. Why did I even sign up for swim? There was an option not to
swim in any meets, though it was frowned upon not to do any meets. And plus, I only had to do this one meet. I glance at my arm, marked up with
sharpie, labeling all of my heats, numbers, orders, and strokes. My first time ever swimming in a swim meet. Of course I should be nervous. The
swimmer in front of me slides out of the water, out of breath. "Good luck!" I hear, and with that I mount the block.
After school, we walked up to the pool. Julia, Maddie, Herbie, and I walked up to the high school just like we did every Monday and Wednesday.
Only today was a Friday, and there was a meet. My stomach kept on doing little flips throughout the day because I was so nervous.
We ate snacks, and I realized the I forgot my lunchbox, full of snacks, in the refrigerator at home. Herbie came to my rescue, and let me have some
of her snacks though. After we were done eating, we went into the locker room and changed into our suits. Even though the meet started later, we
had stayed after school to help set up. The lane lines were already in the water, thanks to the older girls in the club who were in the pool setting up
before us, and so we just did little tasks for Coach Sara. Once everything was done until the other team got there, we marked up each other's arms and
ate some more snacks. We got our towels and water bottles set up on the pool deck, and finally, people started coming.
Once the opposing team arrived, we started the meet. But first, we did warm ups. Stretching, swimming, helping each other put on caps, and more. The
only problem was that we had two lanes to split the club up into, and I got stuck in the fast lane. I was so nervous that I felt like I was going to throw
up, and I got into a coughing fit. I couldn't swim, and had to stop. The girl behind me said, "Are you

Graduation Speech
The day had started out so perfectly, the sun was out, the air was warm and excitement filled the air. Students were all so ready to find their place, to

some of their new cheers.
It still made Alena giggle when she called out the teams name, how it even got approved was beyond her. But maybe it was all part of the

questions later ok. Right now you need to listen to me," Triton began to speak, "Oh my god you're talking! How are you talking? Did I hit me head or

her and sat up to try and tug at her necklace with his teeth, "Geth dis ob ans," he mumbled through clenched teeth, "Whoa wait a minute, transform, and

gave away the threat that lingered in the air. "What...ok someone needs to stop playing pick on the new girl." Alena blinked and looked to Triton, her

Van Gogh In The Yale Art Gallery
This painting depicts a regular cafГ© at night, with the dimensions of 72.4 x 92.1 cm (28 1/2 x 36 1/4 and an accession number of 1961.18.34 this
panting stands out amongst other paintings because of how the myriad of colors and hues mix that causes a clash in contrast. In the Yale Art Gallery,
this oil painting was in the American room among other American crafts. The thing that quickly caught my eye on this painting was the way Van
Gogh applied detail, creativity and the unorthodox use of colors. The painting seemed to be dark and gloomy which was quite a unique quality about
the painting. Van Gogh is one of the most famous expressionist artists that people know and love today. This oil painting on a canvas has been called

It's almost as if the waiter is staring directly at the viewer of the painting. Subjectively, this painting stood out to me and even more when I had
seen it. This painting had a quite abnormal perspective in a way that the cafГ© floor covers a large area of the canvas that Van Gogh painted on. It
appeared as if the artist that painted this piece achieved a high vantage point because it looks as if he was suspended in the air while painting.
Looking at the Clock in the CafГ© it was almost 1am and this is why the gas lighting was on, and it allowed the cafe to stay opened very late. As the
viewer can observe from the painting, the whole environment in the Night Cafe is not so happy and warm. The space itself seemed so isolated and
shadowy even the people in the painting had their heads hung almost as if they were sad. Although Van Gogh usedred which usually is a quite ecstatic
color the addition of red, dark green and dark orange just created an environment that wasn't so welcoming. Also, the use of Van Gogh's brushstroke
had also added another dark feeling to the painting. In this painting, it is very noticeable that Van Gogh used harshly exaggerated brush strokes
around the lights of the Cafe and also the use of very bright shades of red and green were purposefully overly planned to portray his view of the night

My First Day Of School
It 's funny what it 's you remember as a child. I don 't remember my third birthday or my first day of school, I don't remember running around the
playground or what my favorite food was. But I remember very clearly the day my cat died. It 's been 10 years since, and still the most memorable
memory of my childhood.
My sister Riley and I were twins. We were always thinking ahead trying to think of new mischievous plans while waiting on getting into trouble. On
this particular day, we had turned our bedroom walls into our colored master pieces. Even though our mom tried to punish us separately – I near the
corner of the kitchen, Riley in the dining room – we were still giggling and sticking out our tongues at each other. She was just about to scold us when
the doorbell rang.
My mother gave us both a look as she went to answer the door, stopping us in our tracks of silliness.
Standing on the other side of the door was a tall, lanky man wearing a suit. I remember seeing him sniffle and hold back his tears.
What we noticed was that he was holding our cat, Mittens under one arm like a sack of lifeless flour. Riley called to Mittens quietly, hoping that he
would spring up and trot around the house purring but the cat didn 't move. The man began to talk with my mother in a hushed tone. She cupped a
hand over her mouth and wiped away the stray tear that ran down the side of her face.
"Do you mind if I clean up?" his voice shook as our mother nodded.
Our mother rushed us upstairs

The Inevitability Of Reality, By Edvard Munch
The Inevitability of Reality
Oscar Wilde once said, "Society exists only as a mental concept; in the real world there are only individuals." This quote explains that society is
corrupt. People will only surround you when you are in the spotlight, but will depart when you hit rock bottom. The painting The Dance of Life, by
Edvard Munch, portrays a life from beginning to completion. It is visible that the same woman is cloned, from a happier stage of life, to a dark,
gloomy end. The Swimmer, by John Cheever, relates to this idea of the different experiences throughout the course of one's life. The story is about
Neddy, who decides to go home by swimming through the Lucinda River. As a reader, we can see that the story takes place over a... Show more content

At first, Neddy is at the Westerhazy'spool, where he decides that he is going to go on his journey and names the length of pools, "The Lucina River".
At this point, Neddy is very happy, and appears very young and healthy. He still has his high reputation and friends that he thinks he can rely on.
Later on, Neddy arrived at Enid Bunker's house to go through her pool. When he arrived, Ms. Bunker screams, "Oh, look who's here! What a
marvelous surprise! When Lucinda said that you couldn't come I thought I'd die." (3) This shows us the peak of Neddy's reputation. Everyone
wanted him to be at their party to make it seem as if it was worth coming to, since it was good enough for Neddy to join. Cheever continues the
initial exchange saying,"She made her way to him through the crowd, and when they had finished kissing she led him to the bar, a progress that was
slowed by the fact that he stopped to kiss eight or ten other women and shake the hands of as many men." (3) This shows that Neddy is viewed on
high standards and why Mrs. Bunker was so happy that he had shown up to her party. Neddy finishes his drink and then leaves to move on to the next
pool.
When Neddy arrives at the Levy's house, no one is home and he cannot seem to remember whether or not they sold the house. Neddy swims through

Who Is The Protagonist In The Swimmer
Winning the National Book Award in 1958 for his debut novel The Wapshot Chronicle, John Cheever was highly acclaimed as a novelist, but he
may be best remembered for his array of short stories. In the words of the acclaimed novelist Philip Roth, Cheever was an "enchanted realist" who
had "as rich and distinctive [voice] as any of the leading voices of postwar American literature." This 'voice' was in full display Cheever's stories,
especially in "The Swimmer," which is about a man named Neddy Merrill who embarks on a 'voyage' to swim across the whole county in the
fictionalized Bullet Park. In this upper–middle class suburbia, pool parties are the custom and drinking is a popular pastime, especially for the story's
protagonist. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Albeit he may not not in his prime anymore, but he still has the glamorous appearance and attitude, as it were, of someone much younger. In order to
think of oneself as a "legendary figure," as Neddy does, one then becomes incredibly considered with one's image and physical stature; therefore, it is
reasonable to assume that due to his 'slenderness of youth' is partly to explain Neddy's heightened image of himself.
Additionally, Neddy's priorities and interests are quite simple, for he seems to only enjoy being around others during social gatherings and pool parties,
along with, of course, swimming and drinking. This lack of responsibility (or lack to accept responsibility over pleasure) is another reason why
Neddy is living in a reality that no longer exists. He has a wife named Lucinda and "four beautiful daughters" (whose names are never mentioned),
but beyond that not much is known about Neddy's family, nor his attitudes towards his family. There is no mention whether Neddy is happily
married with Lucinda or if he is involved, or even cares, with the lives of his daughters. However, to say that he does not love his wife and daughters
may be a reach; he does name his exploration the 'Lucinda River' after his wife, and he does bring up his daughter a few times in the story, which could
mean that he thinks about them. Nonetheless, the lack of detail about his family

"We learn something new everyday, we are always growing until the day we die" said by Bill Vaughan. Learning is a lesson that is always
changing we each learn new things we are proud of. However, when trying to gain a ability to do something, we have to keep trying. Giving up

Personal Narrative Essay About Being In Sea Water
Noah was born on January 20, 2006. He was a few weeks early, and weighed in at only 5 lbs., 4 oz. He showed early on what a fighter he is. He is my
hero – C.A.F.
I married a fish.
Now don't think I am insulting my dear spouse, implying that she looks like a slimy creature that spends its life in the sea. I am simply trying to
illustrate that C is all about being in the water at every opportunity at her disposal.
The true irony of the situation is that while she acts like a fish, she despises seafood. It's a pity because seafood is one of life's great pleasures.
In her high school years (what we like to call the Neolithic period) she was on her swim team, and to my understanding was damned good. When we
built our first (and most likely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anyway (getting off the tangent train) C loved to swim, and one day she wanted to get a swim in without the kids before the pool closed for the season.
I believe she was in her 2nd Trimester, not that anyone could tell she was with child since she wasn't "showing" at the time.
I was at work that day, so I am going to describe what took place as best as I can recall from the story she told me. She was finishing up a swim and
was getting out of the pool, and the concrete area around the pool was slicker than she expected. She took one step, and the next thing she knew she
had taken a hard sit down on her backside. C doesn't take being embarrassed well. While I like to be silly, she is definitely the "adult" in the
relationship (as most women would probably agree is the norm). Normally if something like this happens, she would look around to make sure no one
noticed before acting as if nothing happened. However, her thoughts immediately focused on the health of our unborn

A Short Story : A Story?
"But how can these girls see, though?"
"Why don't you ask somebody?"
"Maybe later."
When The Crew left the space station, they waited for a bus.
"I almost forgot," Angel said as she handed The Crew silver cards. "These are universal debit cards. You can use them on any planet. Each have a
thousand points. That converts to $2,500 Canadian, and about $5,000 Terrian...I think that's the word I'm looking for."
The bus arrived in front of the space station, even though it looked more like an ultramodern train.
"Where are we going?" Steve asked.
"We're going to a hotel," Angel said.
"They have hotels on this planet?"
"Of course. They also have electricity and plumbing too."
"But I assume these people don't speak English."
"Most people here either speak Hebrew or Kratonish. They are the two most common languages in the universe."
"I haven't heard of a language called Kratonish before."
"Nobody on Earth has. I have no idea why, though. Although Kratonish is like languages such as French, Spanish, and Italian."
"Cool stuff."
When The Crew arrived at the hotel, everybody in the lobby were staring at them.
"Why are they staring at us?" Allison asked Michael.
"I think it's because they can tell we're not from here," Michael said.
"I guess they're not used to seeing aliens here."
"How are we the aliens?"
"Because...never mind."
"Welcome to the Midnight Star Hotel," the Front Desk Clerk said.
Later that day, Angel had a meeting with Sarah and Melody.
"So, you can get a minister or a government official to perform the wedding ceremony in the hotel," Angel said. "But here's the thing, most ministers
and government officials will only marry couples of their own religion."
"Does that mean this planet don't separate church and state?" Melody asked.
"In some ways they do and in some ways they don't. It's complicated."
"I want to find somebody who's willing to perform the wedding ceremony."
"I'll do my best."
"Have you ever thought about becoming a wedding planer?" Sarah asked.
"No," Angel said. "But I'm loving this."
The next day, The Crew ate breakfast at the hotel's restaurant. They made plans for their stay on Terra before Melody and Sarah's wedding. But before
they went anywhere, Angel handed The Crew devices that they would

Analysis Of The Swimmer By John Cheever
John Cheever uses distinctive segments of shape in "The Swimmer" to make its importance. Through this short story, Cheever surmises that
developing is certain and one much of the time denies it's coming and passage. Using Neddy's journey through his neighbors' pools, he exhibits that
when one experiences extraordinary events, it is difficult to recognize the consequent changes. Cheever suggests that a man as often as possible
covers real events from the mind and rather, submerges oneself in more positive trickeries. Imagery, lingual expert, and pictures used all through
"The Swimmer" coordinate to make the subject. The alterations for the duration of Neddy's life are paralleled by changes in Cheever's imagery. The
begin of the story communicates that, "the day was astonishing, and that he lived in a world so generously gave water seemed like a tolerance, a
value. His heart was high and he continued running over the grass". These lines make a photo of a amazing midsummer's day stacked with, please.
The peruser pictures the line of neighbors' pools with Neddy running beginning with one then onto the following. This photo of life and euphoria is
soon supplanted by one of the voids. Neddy keeps running over the Welcher's home where "thepool furniture was crumpled, stacked, and secured with
a covering. The bathhouse was catapulted. Each one of the windows of the house was shut, and when he went to the carport in front he saw a FOR
SALE sign nailed to a tree". Directly the

Personal Narrative: Middletown High School
Before i came to Middletown High I went to a small catholic school called Holy Cross. I Started there in the 5th grade and graduated with my class
in 8th. I had the best of times at that school. The students and faculty welcomed me to the school and in their community with open arms just as the
people at Middletown High. I have so many fond memories from my time at Holy Cross but one will stay in my memory forever. It all started when i
was in the 6th grade at my friend Maddy's Birthday Pool Party at the pool. We were all having a blastswimming , singing, and playing volleyball. Well
not much of the swimming on my part of the fun. at the time i was not the strongest swimmer. I would only stand up in the pool until my chin touched

Personal Narrative: My Trip To The Bahamas
Back in the summer of 2007, my family decided to board a plane and travel to the Bahamas for our vacation. When we got there, we were able to
go around to many different places. One of the very first things my family decided to do was going down to the beach. Afterwards, we walked over
to the pool to hang out. Later on in the week, my parents decided that we were all going to swim with dolphins. Throughout our trip, we were able to
explore the area and experience many memorable events. Out of all of the beaches I have traveled to, I can say without a doubt, that the Bahamas was
the most pulchritudinous. The beach was absolutely gorgeous. The water in the ocean was crystal clear. The color of the sand was so light. It
almost looked like it was white. My family was one group out of the few who were occupying the area, it was almost like we were on a private ... Show

The Swimmer
The Swimmer
The Swimmer was originally a short story written by John Cheever. The story on the surface is about a wealthy man named Ned Merrill who
decides to swim home to his wife Lucinda and two daughters using a string of swimming pools. However, when he arrives home he comes to an
empty house. Using an in depth analysis, it is revealed that his "journey" is actually his decline in status, and effects of alcoholism. Ultimately it
could be argued that the story shows the dangers of wealth and alcoholism. Ned Merrill's wealth has stripped him of a purpose and as a result he finds
thrills in distractions, such as affairs, or he creates false purposes. The greatest false purpose he conjures is when he decides to swim home. Throughout

Kevin was the boy who had the empty pool and the lemonade stand. They initially meet at the lemonade stand. After Ned drinks two cups, Kevin
tells him it is going to cost him 20 cents. Ned promises him he will repay him the next day. Based on Ned's current financial status that promise
knowingly will go unfulfilled. The scene in the empty pool specifically builds Ned's character. Ned is stubbornly set on his goal to swim every pool,
and his haste encounters with insignificant people shows his disconnection. However, with Kevin he takes a brief moment to connect with the boy.
Kevin reveals to Ned his inability to swim well and in response Ned builds his confidence by indulging in pretend swimming. This moment reveals
Ned's humanity. The audience believes the moment is fleeting because once they reach the end of the pool Ned reverted back to wanting to complete
his goal instead of staying there to play with boy. However, Ned's humanity swiftly returns when it seems as though the boy intends to jump off the
diving board and Ned prevents such actions. Overall, this scene shows that the character Ned has his

Summary Of Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress
In 2001, Dai Sijie wrote Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. A book about two young men being "re educated" in communist China. While away
in the mountains Luo, the friend of the narrator, meets a young woman, known to us as the Little Seamstress. In the selected passage, pages 151–152,
Luo is retelling his account of when him and the Seamstress were at their hidden pool, and the Seamstress got bit by a snake. In this passage, the
relationship between Luo and the Seamstress reveals to us that Luo's feelings for her are fueled by a selfish desire for her body instead of her mind.
Even though Luo has found the Seamstress on the mountain, Luo still wants to leave it. Him throwing his keys into the pool is a metaphor for
himself being on the mountain, he feels as though he was thrown "into the depths," never to be reunited with his family again. This shows that
while he has accepted that he may never see his family again he is still upset by it, although he isn't at all comforted that he still has the
Seamstress, a fact that never seems to cross his mind at this point. The negative diction used, such as "plunged," "despair," and "envied," provide
us with insight as to how hopeless Luo really feels about being there. If Luo's feelings for the Seamstress were as genuine as he believed them to
be, the idea of staying on the mountain wouldn't fill him with something as extreme as despair, or even envy towards another creature, such as the
tortoise. Luo also wonders to himself "'Who will ever release me from this mountain?'" He wants to leave the mountain, even though he has found
someone that he "loves" dearly. The Seamstress doesn't seem to pop up in his mind as a reason for him to stay at all. Luo instead only seems to
focus on leaving, and never coming back. This selection of detail reveals to us that the feelings that Luo has towards the Seamstress are in fact fueled
by a self–fulfilling desire to be less alone while being on the mountain, rather than them being genuine.
Luo comes off as detached and uncaring. When he first throws his key ring into the pool and she dives in for it he has an annoyed tone when she
doesn't come up right away. He says he "got very agitated" he even shouted out "'Where are you

Let the Right One in Analysis Essay
BONDING THROUGH EXILE:
An Analysis of Mise–en–ScГЁne in Let the Right One In
The theme of loneliness and isolation has been predominant in cinema since its inception, but Tomas Alfredson explores the idea in a unique way in
his 2008 Swedish romantic horror film, Let the Right One In. Set in the snowy winter of Stockholm, the film depicts the similarly cold and depressing
life of Oskar, a young target of bullying. This frozen, barren setting contributes to the complete isolation that the viewer feels with the characters.
Through strategic shot composition and specific color and mood choices, Alfredson shows how both Oskar and Eli are cut off from the world in
different ways, and then how their common bloodlust brings them together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The camera slowly pans around the playground, showing the bland walls of the apartment complex surrounding it to amplify their sense of
overwhelming loneliness. Oskar, wanting to find a companion in Eli, provides her with his rubik's cube to solve. The rubik's cube can also be seen
as Eli providing an answer to Oskar's problems. Both his life and his rubik's cube are puzzles that need solving, and Eli literally drops in to solve
everything for him. This early scene sets the tone for the rest of the movie and establishes both the characters as lonely outcasts that need to be saved.
As the relationship between Oskar and Eli continues to blossom, Oskar finds out that Eli lives off blood to survive. After this realization, there is a
scene where Eli arrives at Oskar's house. Oskar attempts to let her in by motioning and gesturing but she refuses to cross the threshold. She finally
enters without his permission, causing her to bleed from every opening on her face, turning her into a grotesque image of her true vampiric form.
This causes Oskar to give her permission to enter. This scene symbolizes the finality of the relationship between Oskar and Eli. Eli is a violent
murderer, and Oskar has violent ambitions, and this is the moment where Eli attempts to turn those ambitions into reality. The way the shots of Oskar
and Eli are composed suggest a

Art Appreciation
Art cannot be classified into one category, style, or period. Art is very diverse, ranging from the beginning of the human being to today. Through the
years, art has evolved dramatically from stick figures and two dimensional animals to three dimensional sculptures and intricate paintings. The artwork
featured at the Seattle Art Museum shows many different types of art and features several different periods in which these artworks were created. Two
pieces of art that stuck out the most at the museum was Albert Bierstadt's Puget Sound on the Pacific Coast and Robert Arneson'sPool with Splash.
Both of these pieces of art showed character and seemed to almost speak to the viewer. Although there are many different periods... Show more content

The pool that Robert formed using the ceramic media is three dimensional in form and is closely shaped like a lima bean. The "water" of the pool,
is made up of many different pieces of ceramic and has several different shades of blue and green. In order to represent the movement of water
within the pool, Robert used complimentary blues and greens together and slightly swirled them to make it look close to how water moves. Each
piece of the pools water fits together like a tight puzzle. They are numbered so that the colors and shapes can be set together perfectly while on
display. In the center of the pool, is a large white ceramic "splash". Robert gave this piece curves and form to represent the splash of water as if
someone was jumping into the pool and creating a huge backsplash. The edge of Roberts Pool with Splash is created to look like the cement
barrier that contains the water of the pool. He formed each piece to look like a block which forms the shape of the lima bean pool. These parts of
his masterpiece do not have the glazy appearance that the water pieces give. The Pool with Splash by Robert Arneson really shows and represents
how a pool in someone's backyard would look on a hot summer day.

I woke up early in the morning, to find the sun shining brightly in my eyes as I awake from my slumber. I quickly heard the familiar sound of

A Gift From Nature : A Gift From Nature
Today I received a gift from nature while I was swimming in my backyard pool. At first I believed the buzzing I heard was a giant wasp. As I turned
my head slowly, I came face to face with a delicate little humming bird. He flew under my neck and rose up to my nose to hover and stare at me
before lighting on my arm for a few seconds. It was pure magic. I called him little darling and asked if there was something he wanted. He flew away,
only to return to rest on the pool decking close to my hand. I was intrigued and delighted. Although brief, this encounter brought happiness to my day.
My sister Lu is the natural one, the one that can grow anything, is a vegetarian, has animals eating out of her hand, spends money weekly to buy
pounds of birdseed to fill containers in her courtyard. If Alfred Hitchcock was scouting locations to film The Birds, he would have selected her

they be poisonous toads, or tarantulas, she welcomes them all to her world. That is my sister.
I on the other hand am more citified. I scream at a cockroach or spider. A little mouse sends me flying across the room seeking higher ground. One
time I saw a large moving unidentified "thing" on the lawn in the back yard. It was dark and windy, a Stephen King kind of night, with the moon

An Example Of Being Naked In Public From Modern Pop-Culture
Hi all, I'm a dog, so I will talk about few examples of being naked in public from modern pop–culture. In the story "The emperor's new clothes", the
king walked out without any clothes at the end of the story in front of the public because two rascals sell an invisible suit of clothes that only smart
people can "see" to the king. Since the king and all the helpers around do not want to admit they are not "smart" enough to see the cloth, the king
walked out naked with his servants walked behind him with their hands raised to hold the imaginary mantle. I think this would be an example that a
humorous character (the king) gets his comeuppance (walking naked in front of the public) because of his hypocrisy. Another one I can think of is the

Descriptive Essay On Chlorine Water
The familiar, inharmonious clamour frustrates me as I struggle to maneuver my way through the bulky chlorine water. I roll over to take a breathe
and gasp shamelessly: my lungs burn with the intake of oxygen, and the absorbed energy is not sufficient. I approach the wall and as I come off of the
flip turn, I see the towering starting blocks through the blurred vision of my goggles.
The sight brings forth a nostalgic memory, and sequentially a profound sense of energy. My eyes dart back to blocks and there's definitely something
else, something missing. I just can't grasp the idea. I shove my confused thoughts away and concentrate on swim practice and the set intervals. My legs
flutter with a burning sensation and I relish the pain. However, the thought can't stop recurring, and as I drift into the wall, I travel back to beginning of
the memory...
"BEEEEPPP!" The screech of the blaring buzzer jolts my idle body. While attempting to warm myself up, I watch some racers sprint down the lengthy
pool and back, and note their struggle to beat the clock. Their fingers ram into the ebony black touchpad, and their exhausted faces twist to see the
blinking scoreboard embossed with time results. Watching their rosy faces and stocky movements as they climb out of the pool, my stomach churns
with an uneasy mixture of butterflies and the food–I–definitely–shouldn't–have–consumed–5–minute –before–a–race.

even though this is the farthest thing from, I think. "I just do. Anyway, what are you up to this fine evening?" "Sleep." Oh no, THE SQUEAK.
"At six o'clock? Doubt it." He's even confident over the phone. I groaned. "Okay, maybe not sleep." I sighed. "Then what are you doing?" He
asked. "Nothing." I replied. Now that Liz left, I am left in my boredom. "Good. I am doing nothing too. We should hang out." Blunt much? Well,
it's better than how I would ask a question like that. "Why?" I squeaked. "Because we're friends, right?" I don't know. According to Liz we are "flirty
friends". "I don't know, are we?" I asked and finally my squeak subsided, for now. "We are." He confirmed. "Alright." "Alright?" He repeated,
sounding confused. "Alright, lets hang out." I breathed out nervously, trying to contain my squeak. "I'll pick you up in fifteen minutes, yeah?" I nodded
but remembered we're speaking

Mcbride: A Short Story
Now off to the McBride household of fun activities. We've had tons and tons of fun at my house. First up is the pool parties we used to have at my
house. It was mostly just Jake's family and Madison's and Michelle's family that would come over and swim with us. We'd pull up our old trampoline
and jump from there into the pool. During one of our pool parties, the twins and I in our swimsuits, decided we wanted to play with this wooden
stake that was in the ground. Michelle then, hit me right in the forehead and split my head right open. You could compare the pain as to getting a
knife stabbed into your leg, but then again, I was like six years old when this happened. My mom came outside finding me balling my eyes out like
water coming out of

A Few Miles South Of Soledad, The Salinas River

  • 1. A Few Miles South Of Soledad, The Salinas River A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool. On one side of the river the golden foothill slopes curve up to the strong and rocky Gabilan Mountains, but on the valley side the water is lined with trees– willows fresh and green with every spring, carrying in their lower leaf junctures the debris of the winter 's flooding; and sycamores with mottled, white, recumbent limbs and branches that arch over the pool. On the sandy bank under the trees the leaves lie deep and so crisp that a lizard makes a great skittering if he runs among them. Rabbits come out of the brush to sit on the sand in the evening, and the damp flats are covered with the night tracks of 'coons, and with the spread pads of dogs from the ranches, and with the split–wedge tracks of deer that come to drink in the dark. There is a path through the willows and among the sycamores, a path beaten hard by boys coming down from the ranches to swim in the deep pool, and beaten hard by tramps who come wearily down from the highway in the evening to jungle–up near water. In front of the low horizontal limb of a giant sycamore there is an ash pile made by many fires; the limb is worn smooth by men who have sat on it. Evening of a hot day started the little wind to moving among the leaves. The shade climbed up the hills toward the top. On ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. My Vacation Essay "Rinnnngggggg!" The final bell rang and the doors flew wide open. "Bang!" Lockers are slammed shut. Everyone is rushing through the hall to get to their busses and cars. Summer is finally here. Everyone is ready to sleep in, hang out with friends, and go on their vacations. Summer can get boring when you have nothing to do and when you are required to wait a month to go on your vacation. My family and I were going to Florida. The great news was that the month flew by fast. Somewhere at the end of June we started packing our bags and were ready to leave. Our relatives and friends tagged along, so it is going to be twice the fun. The drive there was about twenty hours long with all the stops we made, but I'm pretty sure it was way longer. It felt like we drove for ages. The cars were crowded with all the kids that came with us, so we made many stops. We stopped at tons of gas stations and places to eat. We always switched cars so we would not be as bored and we could be with our friends. While driving, we stopped at a hotel to rest from all the driving and sleep in a comfortable bed. The hotel had amazing waffles that you got to cook by yourself. They had delicious flavors that you can add on top of your waffles. There was also a pool so we went to go swim and we had tons of fun. Unfortunately, there was a lot of chlorine so we were all smelly. When we finally got there we went to get our hotel keys. The first thing we saw was the pool. We all wanted to go swimming, but the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Personal Narrative: Moving Back To The Pool "Hurry up!" yelled my sister. "Give me a second!" I hollered back. I took my sweet time smoothing the sunscreen to my caramel skin. I hopped down the stairs, taking three steps at a time, as I did when I was rushing. Peering out the open front door, I could see everyone was already on their way to the pool. I hurried to catch up, moving as quick as a firemen answering a call. "Who's coming with us today?" I asked my sister. "Just about everyone," she sighed as we slowly walked to the pool at the end of our apartment complex. I wondered what was bothering her, but the thought quickly slipped my mind as excitement took its place. As we got closer to the pool I could hear the joyful sounds of children, clearly we weren't the only ones going. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Sammy's Characters In A & P By John Updike Morals are standards or beliefs that most people use for guidance in their lives and turn to when making decisions. A person's character is composed of their set morals, so the actions many people take are dictated by what they believe in. In the short story "A&P" by John Updike, main character Sammy finds himself in a situation where his authority figure took action against three teenage girls in a way that Sammy did not believe to be right. This position was especially difficult for Sammy to be in, due to wanting to express his own beliefs while also knowing he is not in a place of command to request a change from his boss. While reading "A&P" I was able to relate to Sammy on a personal level, as I have been in a similar circumstance and felt my boss acted in ways that went against my beliefs. Sammy and I have both exhibited impulsive acts of defiance towards higher authority figures, due to circumstances in which we felt our integrity was being compromised in our place of work. Sammy's strong feelings towards three girls in his store, whom he did not previously know, led him to make a choice that affected both him and his family. Sammy believed his boss, Lengel, was in the wrong to state the store policy of, "dressing decently" (378), to the three girls wearing bathing suits. Lengel also said how the store, "isn't the beach", so the girls should have their, "shoulders covered" (378). Sammy felt that Lengel was rude while talking to the girls and stated that Lengel, ... • 5. Good Times Become Good Memories, And Bad Times Become Good... "Good times become good memories, and bad times become good lessons." I have had many good and bad memories but this is one of the most memorable ones I have ever had. The most important and vivid memory that seems like it was just yesterday was when my dad had to go to Iraq in 2009 for a year. At the time I was 5 and didn't realize the risks of him going over seas with the Army. He could get injured or even killed. I was so depressed when I finally understood that he would be gone for a whole year. He would leave when I was 5 and come back when I was 6. He would miss a whole year of my life, and he would miss my 1st year of school(kindergarten). I remember exactly where I was when my parents told me he was going away, when we had his going away party, and when he actually left. I remember all of my emotions. It was a nice sunny day and my parents decided we were going out to dinner. Little did I know it was the dinner that would change my life. We decided to go to Max & Erma's because that was my favorite restaurant at the time when I was 4. They had the ice cream bar, and I loved it. I was wearing a pretty dress because earlier that day I was playing outside and I got very dirty. After deciding where to eat, we went inside, and I had a bath to get cleaned up. When we were all ready we got into our car and drove up to Gibsonia to go to Max & Ermas. It was very bright and sunny. It was a long drive and it felt like it took forever because I was so excited to get ice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Personal Narrative: Digging Down The Llano River It was my junior year, in a small town that is unknown to many, Junction, TX. I was there with a group from school for a three–day competition. One of the main activities that weekend was to go tubing down the Llano River for about an hour. My group and I approached the area where the tubes were being distributed. Behind that day's activity leaders, there was a stack of orange life–jackets and as we were each handed a glossy tube, we were asked if we wanted one. We were told they were not necessary since the area we would be tubing in would be at most three feet deep. "Even if you cannot swim, you should be fine without a jacket, the water is not deep at all," I decided not to pick up a life jacket since it was not a requirement. We approached... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the instructor, the river was supposed to be no more than three feet deep, yet her head was out of our sight. We were very alarmed, so we swam furiously as quickly as we could to where she was. After a few minutes of struggling to get away from the rocky areas we managed to get her tube back and threw it to her. As we were recovering from the incident and getting back into completing our activity, I felt something thick and slimy wrapped along my leg which caused me to start panicking once again. It took me a few seconds to realize that it was just a cluster of plants and twigs. After the alarming incident, I was extremely shaken but thought that nothing bad could happen again. I was wrong. I then noticed that the aftermath of the collision resulted in a small opening in my tube, which allowed the air to begin flowing out. I got stuck and could no longer move away in the water without sinking. As I had discovered earlier, the water was quite deep. I once again felt worried and so many thoughts were rushing through my mind. My friends tried helping me but the currents dragged them away, further down the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Desicions Without Grandpa As another Team Meeting broke up, Steven plodded back to his desk where his projections for the quarter ahead were waiting to be completed. He gazed out the hermetically sealed windows which overlooked the sprawling city, his eyes searching for green spaces. He sighed. He had thought transferring to the City from the village would be more exciting and challenging but it had not lived up to his expectations and he was frustrated at the endless meetings and emphasis on figures and targets. He was also missing his friends and family as he tried to settle into a new life. City people rushed everywhere and appeared busy and always having somewhere to go. He felt invisible. He could never imagine walking along any street in his home village and not speaking to a single person. Older folks knew him either as John and Nettie's son or Peter's grandson. Others knew him from school or shared activities. Almost everyone who passed by his Grandpa's workshop, popped their head in the ever– open door to call out a greeting. He pictured his Grandpa's workshop in the ivy–clad stone building attached to the family home. He could see the dust motes dancing in the sunlight streaming through the open door; Grandpa sitting in the chair he made for himself or standing at his workbench, his tools all hanging in their proper places on the wall behind; his stock of wood stored on open shelves out of reach of the sunlight. There was always the dry hot smell of wood shavings and occasionally the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Descriptive Essay Summer always started with a freezing splash into my small, above–ground pool that I practically begged my dad to get me. The month before school lets out, I always started to remind my dad about putting up our pool. It takes 18 hours to completely fill up with the freezing water from our well. In my opinion, while it's still filling is the best time to swim. Cold and shallow! My mom never liked me swimming before it filled to the top because the pool sits on a concrete slab and if we slip or fall we could "seriously injure" ourselves. I never cared, though. If we had to get in to smooth out the bottom, I would stay in until sunset. Although the past few years have been entirely different, no one wanted to help put the pool up because it's ... I surfaced and touched my smashed nose that had blood flowing into my hands and calmly told Jalyn, "I think my nose is broken." Rushing to the side of the pool, I told Jalyn to go find my dad, but she didn't move. She was in shock, I think. Once she finally got my dad, there was a huge pool of my blood in my hands and beside the ladder. I still hadn't started freaking out until my brilliant father said, and I quote, "Let me fix it" as he reached for my nose. I backed into the pool, still bleeding, beginning to freak out because I thought about the how much it will hurt to get it fixed. After much protest, I climbed the ladder, shaking from fear, got into the car, and waited for one of my parents to take me to the Lyons ER. My mom ended up taking me because my dad couldn't take my crying, but he still had to take Jalyn home who was freaking out just as much as I was. The car ride to the ER seemed to take forever and so did the waiting in the empty Emergency Room. As I held a paper towel up to my nose, I realized I was still in my wet swimming suit wrapped up in a soaking towel. I forgot extra clothes! Luckily, my mom thought ahead and brought some, but she made me wait until they nurses came, who had tons of warm blankets! Although I never got warm until I changed and washed all the blood off of me, It helped me calm down, especially when the nurse told me that they won't snap my bones back into place. After I got ... • 9. My Fear Of Drowning Everyone has a greatest fear whether it be from fear of dolls to fear of death. Fear is characterized by a feeling of terror or dread caused by an object that you believe to be harmful. All fears are caused by an event that has happened to someone that traumatizes them for life. A fear is sometimes unovercomable and this may be because to overcome it one must be a certain characteristic. For example, to overcome the fear of ugliness one must lose weight and sometimes acquire surgery. My greatest fear is the idea ofdrowning and this is a fear of many. I do not have a certain characteristic to acquire before overcoming my fear of drowning except for knowledge of pool etiquette and rules. To understand one's fear the information about the traumatizing event must be presented. Also when they found out the fear existed and how one overcame, if did, the fear. Fear of drowning is my greatest fear because when I was eight I drowned in a clear, blue, treacherous pool by the hotel with the dark burgundy–colored brick and cream–colored doors. I remember my cousins laugh whenever someone went the wrong way as they were playing marco polo. I was sitting on the scorching cement by the pool when I decided I wanted to cool down and play with everyone else. I did not have the understanding of what the big, black numbers by the pool meant, all I saw was six and dived in. As soon as I dove in, I felt the lack of air, replaced by water, reaching my lungs as I tried to stand and breathe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Descriptive Essay About Swimming Here I was standing in front of the block, watching the person in front of me swim. I can't do this, I think. I hear Julia in my head saying, "Just only breathe like twice, on the first 25, ok?" and with that I felt a wave of sickness. I was so nervous I was going to throw up. How could I swim 25 yards without breathing more than twice? I would come in last, I just knew it. Why did I even sign up for swim? There was an option not to swim in any meets, though it was frowned upon not to do any meets. And plus, I only had to do this one meet. I glance at my arm, marked up with sharpie, labeling all of my heats, numbers, orders, and strokes. My first time ever swimming in a swim meet. Of course I should be nervous. The swimmer in front of me slides out of the water, out of breath. Herbie came to my rescue, and let me have some of her snacks though. After we were done eating, we went into the locker room and changed into our suits. Even though the meet started later, we had stayed after school to help set up. The lane lines were already in the water, thanks to the older girls in the club who were in the pool setting up before us, and so we just did little tasks for Coach Sara. Once everything was done until the other team got there, we marked up each other's arms and ate some more snacks. We got our towels and water bottles set up on the pool deck, and finally, people started coming. Once the opposing team arrived, we started the meet. But first, we did warm ups. Stretching, swimming, helping each other put on caps, and more. The only problem was that we had two lanes to split the club up into, and I got stuck in the fast lane. I was so nervous that I felt like I was going to throw up, and I got into a coughing fit. I couldn't swim, and had to stop. The girl behind me said, "Are you ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Van Gogh In The Yale Art Gallery This painting depicts a regular cafГ© at night, with the dimensions of 72.4 x 92.1 cm (28 1/2 x 36 1/4 and an accession number of 1961.18.34 this panting stands out amongst other paintings because of how the myriad of colors and hues mix that causes a clash in contrast. In the Yale Art Gallery, this oil painting was in the American room among other American crafts. The thing that quickly caught my eye on this painting was the way Van Gogh applied detail, creativity and the unorthodox use of colors. The painting seemed to be dark and gloomy which was quite a unique quality about the painting. Van Gogh is one of the most famous expressionist artists that people know and love today. Subjectively, this painting stood out to me and even more when I had seen it. This painting had a quite abnormal perspective in a way that the cafГ© floor covers a large area of the canvas that Van Gogh painted on. It appeared as if the artist that painted this piece achieved a high vantage point because it looks as if he was suspended in the air while painting. Looking at the Clock in the CafГ© it was almost 1am and this is why the gas lighting was on, and it allowed the cafe to stay opened very late. As the viewer can observe from the painting, the whole environment in the Night Cafe is not so happy and warm. The space itself seemed so isolated and shadowy even the people in the painting had their heads hung almost as if they were sad. Although Van Gogh usedred which usually is a quite ecstatic color the addition of red, dark green and dark orange just created an environment that wasn't so welcoming. Also, the use of Van Gogh's brushstroke had also added another dark feeling to the painting. In this painting, it is very noticeable that Van Gogh used harshly exaggerated brush strokes around the lights of the Cafe and also the use of very bright shades of red and green were purposefully overly planned to portray his view of the night ... • 13. My First Day Of School It 's funny what it 's you remember as a child. I don 't remember my third birthday or my first day of school, I don't remember running around the playground or what my favorite food was. But I remember very clearly the day my cat died. It 's been 10 years since, and still the most memorable memory of my childhood. My sister Riley and I were twins. We were always thinking ahead trying to think of new mischievous plans while waiting on getting into trouble. On this particular day, we had turned our bedroom walls into our colored master pieces. Even though our mom tried to punish us separately – I near the corner of the kitchen, Riley in the dining room – we were still giggling and sticking out our tongues at each other. She was just about to scold us when the doorbell rang. Riley called to Mittens quietly, hoping that he would spring up and trot around the house purring but the cat didn 't move. The man began to talk with my mother in a hushed tone. She cupped a hand over her mouth and wiped away the stray tear that ran down the side of her face. "Do you mind if I clean up?" his voice shook as our mother nodded. Our mother rushed us upstairs ... • 16. The Inevitability Of Reality, By Edvard Munch The Inevitability of Reality Oscar Wilde once said, "Society exists only as a mental concept; in the real world there are only individuals." This quote explains that society is corrupt. People will only surround you when you are in the spotlight, but will depart when you hit rock bottom. The painting The Dance of Life, by Edvard Munch, portrays a life from beginning to completion. It is visible that the same woman is cloned, from a happier stage of life, to a dark, gloomy end. The Swimmer, by John Cheever, relates to this idea of the different experiences throughout the course of one's life. Later on, Neddy arrived at Enid Bunker's house to go through her pool. When he arrived, Ms. Bunker screams, "Oh, look who's here! What a marvelous surprise! When Lucinda said that you couldn't come I thought I'd die." (3) This shows us the peak of Neddy's reputation. Everyone wanted him to be at their party to make it seem as if it was worth coming to, since it was good enough for Neddy to join. Cheever continues the initial exchange saying,"She made her way to him through the crowd, and when they had finished kissing she led him to the bar, a progress that was slowed by the fact that he stopped to kiss eight or ten other women and shake the hands of as many men." (3) This shows that Neddy is viewed on high standards and why Mrs. Bunker was so happy that he had shown up to her party. Neddy finishes his drink and then leaves to move on to the next pool. • 17. Who Is The Protagonist In The Swimmer Winning the National Book Award in 1958 for his debut novel The Wapshot Chronicle, John Cheever was highly acclaimed as a novelist, but he may be best remembered for his array of short stories. In the words of the acclaimed novelist Philip Roth, Cheever was an "enchanted realist" who had "as rich and distinctive [voice] as any of the leading voices of postwar American literature." This 'voice' was in full display Cheever's stories, especially in "The Swimmer," which is about a man named Neddy Merrill who embarks on a 'voyage' to swim across the whole county in the fictionalized Bullet Park. In this upper–middle class suburbia, pool parties are the custom and drinking is a popular pastime, especially for the story's protagonist. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Albeit he may not not in his prime anymore, but he still has the glamorous appearance and attitude, as it were, of someone much younger. In order to think of oneself as a "legendary figure," as Neddy does, one then becomes incredibly considered with one's image and physical stature; therefore, it is reasonable to assume that due to his 'slenderness of youth' is partly to explain Neddy's heightened image of himself. Additionally, Neddy's priorities and interests are quite simple, for he seems to only enjoy being around others during social gatherings and pool parties, along with, of course, swimming and drinking. This lack of responsibility (or lack to accept responsibility over pleasure) is another reason why Neddy is living in a reality that no longer exists. He has a wife named Lucinda and "four beautiful daughters" (whose names are never mentioned), but beyond that not much is known about Neddy's family, nor his attitudes towards his family. There is no mention whether Neddy is happily married with Lucinda or if he is involved, or even cares, with the lives of his daughters. However, to say that he does not love his wife and daughters may be a reach; he does name his exploration the 'Lucinda River' after his wife, and he does bring up his daughter a few times in the story, which could mean that he thinks about them. Learning is a lesson that is always changing we each learn new things we are proud of. However, when trying to gain a ability to do something, we have to keep trying. Giving up before getting anywhere is not an option. "Do or do not there is no try" said by Yoda from "Star Wars". When I finally turned five; however, my parents thought it was time for the floaties to come off and I thought so too. I was ecstatic at the thought of the floaties finally coming off after all this time. There was not a glance of fear through my mind until I got to the pool. However, at that first glance looking back into my past I remember the first thought that crossed my mind as I looked towards the pool. "This is going to be easy" I thought. • 23. Analysis Of The Swimmer By John Cheever John Cheever uses distinctive segments of shape in "The Swimmer" to make its importance. Through this short story, Cheever surmises that developing is certain and one much of the time denies it's coming and passage. Using Neddy's journey through his neighbors' pools, he exhibits that when one experiences extraordinary events, it is difficult to recognize the consequent changes. Cheever suggests that a man as often as possible covers real events from the mind and rather, submerges oneself in more positive trickeries. Imagery, lingual expert, and pictures used all through "The Swimmer" coordinate to make the subject. The alterations for the duration of Neddy's life are paralleled by changes in Cheever's imagery. The begin of the story communicates that, "the day was astonishing, and that he lived in a world so generously gave water seemed like a tolerance, a value. His heart was high and he continued running over the grass". These lines make a photo of a amazing midsummer's day stacked with, please. The peruser pictures the line of neighbors' pools with Neddy running beginning with one then onto the following. This photo of life and euphoria is soon supplanted by one of the voids. In this passage, the relationship between Luo and the Seamstress reveals to us that Luo's feelings for her are fueled by a selfish desire for her body instead of her mind. Even though Luo has found the Seamstress on the mountain, Luo still wants to leave it. Him throwing his keys into the pool is a metaphor for himself being on the mountain, he feels as though he was thrown "into the depths," never to be reunited with his family again. This shows that while he has accepted that he may never see his family again he is still upset by it, although he isn't at all comforted that he still has the Seamstress, a fact that never seems to cross his mind at this point. The negative diction used, such as "plunged," "despair," and "envied," provide us with insight as to how hopeless Luo really feels about being there. If Luo's feelings for the Seamstress were as genuine as he believed them to be, the idea of staying on the mountain wouldn't fill him with something as extreme as despair, or even envy towards another creature, such as the tortoise. Luo also wonders to himself "'Who will ever release me from this mountain?'" He wants to leave the mountain, even though he has found someone that he "loves" dearly. The Seamstress doesn't seem to pop up in his mind as a reason for him to stay at all. Luo instead only seems to focus on leaving, and never coming back. This selection of detail reveals to us that the feelings that Luo has towards the Seamstress are in fact fueled by a self–fulfilling desire to be less alone while being on the mountain, rather than them being genuine. Luo comes off as detached and uncaring. When he first throws his key ring into the pool and she dives in for it he has an annoyed tone when she doesn't come up right away. He says he "got very agitated" he even shouted out "'Where are you ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Learning Experience Reflection Paper "We learn something new every day, we are always growing until the day we die" said by Bill Vaughan. Learning is a lesson that is always changing we each learn new things we are proud of. However, when trying to gain an ability to do something, we have to keep trying. Giving up before getting anywhere is not an option. "Do or do not, there is no try" said by Yoda from "Star Wars". I have had many important experiences in my life, but I have the fondest memory of one specific learning moment that greatly affected my life. I will now "show" everyone a time where I learned how to swim. At first, it was a couple of years back around the time when I was five years old. I mean of course I had been in a pool before that, but I had to wear floaties since my parents would be scared to death if something awful occurred. I was delusional, I had no idea how wrong I was until I took those first steps into the deep end of the pool. After a couple of days, I can remember this part clearly; I was so scared of going back into the pool ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Let the Right One in Analysis Essay BONDING THROUGH EXILE: An Analysis of Mise–en–ScГЁne in Let the Right One In The theme of loneliness and isolation has been predominant in cinema since its inception, but Tomas Alfredson explores the idea in a unique way in his 2008 Swedish romantic horror film, Let the Right One In. Set in the snowy winter of Stockholm, the film depicts the similarly cold and depressing life of Oskar, a young target of bullying. This frozen, barren setting contributes to the complete isolation that the viewer feels with the characters. Through strategic shot composition and specific color and mood choices, Alfredson shows how both Oskar and Eli are cut off from the world in different ways, and then how their common bloodlust brings them together. ... The camera slowly pans around the playground, showing the bland walls of the apartment complex surrounding it to amplify their sense of overwhelming loneliness. Oskar, wanting to find a companion in Eli, provides her with his rubik's cube to solve. The rubik's cube can also be seen as Eli providing an answer to Oskar's problems. Both his life and his rubik's cube are puzzles that need solving, and Eli literally drops in to solve everything for him. This early scene sets the tone for the rest of the movie and establishes both the characters as lonely outcasts that need to be saved. As the relationship between Oskar and Eli continues to blossom, Oskar finds out that Eli lives off blood to survive. After this realization, there is a scene where Eli arrives at Oskar's house. Oskar attempts to let her in by motioning and gesturing but she refuses to cross the threshold. She finally enters without his permission, causing her to bleed from every opening on her face, turning her into a grotesque image of her true vampiric form. This causes Oskar to give her permission to enter. This scene symbolizes the finality of the relationship between Oskar and Eli. Eli is a violent murderer, and Oskar has violent ambitions, and this is the moment where Eli attempts to turn those ambitions into reality. Through the years, art has evolved dramatically from stick figures and two dimensional animals to three dimensional sculptures and intricate paintings. The artwork featured at the Seattle Art Museum shows many different types of art and features several different periods in which these artworks were created. Two pieces of art that stuck out the most at the museum was Albert Bierstadt's Puget Sound on the Pacific Coast and Robert Arneson'sPool with Splash. The pool that Robert formed using the ceramic media is three dimensional in form and is closely shaped like a lima bean. The "water" of the pool, is made up of many different pieces of ceramic and has several different shades of blue and green. In order to represent the movement of water within the pool, Robert used complimentary blues and greens together and slightly swirled them to make it look close to how water moves. Each piece of the pools water fits together like a tight puzzle. They are numbered so that the colors and shapes can be set together perfectly while on display. In the center of the pool, is a large white ceramic "splash". Robert gave this piece curves and form to represent the splash of water as if someone was jumping into the pool and creating a huge backsplash. The edge of Roberts Pool with Splash is created to look like the cement barrier that contains the water of the pool. He formed each piece to look like a block which forms the shape of the lima bean pool. These parts of his masterpiece do not have the glazy appearance that the water pieces give. • 33. Descriptive Essay About Swimming I woke up early in the morning, to find the sun shining brightly in my eyes as I awake from my slumber. I quickly heard the familiar sound of pancakes sizzling on the rough surface of the frying pan. As soon as I got out of bed, I raced to the kitchen to eat pancakes, as I enter I hear the warm voice of my mothers greeting. I quickly ate, because I was excited to go swimming. As soon as I finished, I brought my plates over to the sink, I dashed back to my room to change. I quickly changed into my swimsuit, running throughout the house grabbing my towel, phone, goggles. I realized I had all of my stuff, so I darted outside. The faster I ran, the more energized I felt with the fresh morning dew on my feet. I quickly came to a halt, aware that the pool was right in front of me. I tossed my towel over by the table. Setting my goggles over my eyes, I cautiously climbed the ladder to not fall or trip. Excited, as I reached the top, I took a step back, preparing myself for the jump. I quickly jumped into the pool, making a humongous splash watering the grass beside the pool. I swam around the bottom, looking for, the pool toys I had left in the previous night. I quickly found the bright orange torpedo grabbing it, then swimming back up to the surface to catch my breath. • 35. A Gift From Nature : A Gift From Nature Today I received a gift from nature while I was swimming in my backyard pool. At first I believed the buzzing I heard was a giant wasp. As I turned my head slowly, I came face to face with a delicate little humming bird. He flew under my neck and rose up to my nose to hover and stare at me before lighting on my arm for a few seconds. It was pure magic. I called him little darling and asked if there was something he wanted. He flew away, only to return to rest on the pool decking close to my hand. I was intrigued and delighted. Although brief, this encounter brought happiness to my day. My sister Lu is the natural one, the one that can grow anything, is a vegetarian, has animals eating out of her hand, spends money weekly to buy pounds of birdseed to fill containers in her courtyard. If Alfred Hitchcock was scouting locations to film The Birds, he would have selected her enclosed entry/garden. Birds of all varieties fly in and perch on the feeders. She loves those birds and the various critters who come to visit, whether they be poisonous toads, or tarantulas, she welcomes them all to her world. That is my sister. I on the other hand am more citified. I scream at a cockroach or spider. A little mouse sends me flying across the room seeking higher ground. • 37. An Example Of Being Naked In Public From Modern Pop-Culture Hi all, I'm a dog, so I will talk about few examples of being naked in public from modern pop–culture. In the story "The emperor's new clothes", the king walked out without any clothes at the end of the story in front of the public because two rascals sell an invisible suit of clothes that only smart people can "see" to the king. Since the king and all the helpers around do not want to admit they are not "smart" enough to see the cloth, the king walked out naked with his servants walked behind him with their hands raised to hold the imaginary mantle. I think this would be an example that a humorous character (the king) gets his comeuppance (walking naked in front of the public) because of his hypocrisy. Another one I can think of is the ... I roll over to take a breathe and gasp shamelessly: my lungs burn with the intake of oxygen, and the absorbed energy is not sufficient. I approach the wall and as I come off of the flip turn, I see the towering starting blocks through the blurred vision of my goggles. The sight brings forth a nostalgic memory, and sequentially a profound sense of energy. My eyes dart back to blocks and there's definitely something else, something missing. I just can't grasp the idea. I shove my confused thoughts away and concentrate on swim practice and the set intervals. My legs flutter with a burning sensation and I relish the pain. However, the thought can't stop recurring, and as I drift into the wall, I travel back to beginning of the memory... "BEEEEPPP!" The screech of the blaring buzzer jolts my idle body. While attempting to warm myself up, I watch some racers sprint down the lengthy pool and back, and note their struggle to beat the clock. Their fingers ram into the ebony black touchpad, and their exhausted faces twist to see the blinking scoreboard embossed with time results. Watching their rosy faces and stocky movements as they climb out of the pool, my stomach churns with an uneasy mixture of butterflies and the food–I–definitely–shouldn't–have–consumed–5–minute –before–a–race.
