2. Purpose of Questionnaire
After producing and uploading the rough cut to
YouTube, we wanted some feedback from members
of our target audience so we knew what to improve
on when working on our final product. We asked
people who we think matched the targeted audience
because these people‟s opinions and views on our
rough cut would be most valuable as we‟re
marketing the song/video towards them. We made a
series of questions then asked 5 people so we had
some variety and more feedback to work upon. Here
are the results.

The purpose of asking this question was to find whether people understood the
video, as I believe that if a video‟s visuals match the lyrics, (in Goodwin‟s
theory, illustrate the lyrics) then it is easier for the audience to engage with both
video and song as they can understand the video if they understand the song. On
the whole, most people we asked said that the video matched with the lyrics.
Specific feedback we got was that it matched because of „the part where she sings
„incognito‟ and the men are wearing masks, as if they‟re in cognito‟. Someone else
commented saying that they felt the men in masks represented the monsters, which
shows that the audience were engaging with the video and bringing about their own
interpretations, which is good. One group of people however said that the lyrics do
not match with the visuals throughout the whole of the video, but later went on and
said that that wasn‟t a bad thing, and made it more artistic than narrative, which is
what we initially wanted to achieve.
4. Do you think the video is conventional of the indie

In this question, I asked people if they think the video is conventional of the
indie genre. All 5 of the people who I asked said it was conventional of the
genre. One person commented saying that „very surreal and trippy…works
well‟. This is good feedback and shows that our video was successful as we
wanted it to match with the genre because it would mean that our target
audience would definitely enjoy it and appeal to it. When it comes to making
the final cut, we will just carry on using surreal shots and lots of colours
throughout our video.

Because we used a lot of effects in our video, specifically the kaleidoscope effect
which we created by layering multiple mirrors on top of shots, I thought it would
be a good idea to get the audience‟s response on them as they are such a
frequent part of our video. 4 out of the 5 people I asked said they liked
them, with some of them making comments saying that they fit the genre of the
song, and others saying that it worked will within the video. This is good as this
is what we wanted to achieve, and I‟m pleased with the feedback on this.
Between now and the final cut deadline, we will just improve on the
kaleidoscopes to make them more effective, but we certainly not remove them.

As we are not only creating a music video for a particular star, we are recreating the star
into something we have come up ourselves, so having the star present in the video is
key as this makes it more convincing and is something we shall be marked upon.
Because of this, I thought it would be wise to get the audience‟s response on her
presence within the video, and whether they think she‟s pictured a good amount
throughout. On the whole, the majority said that there‟s a right balance of visuals shots
and shots including the star. One person said that there should be less, but their reason
behind this was personal preference to more visual videos opposed to ones centred
around a star. And the final person asked said they were unsure. Overall, with this
feedback given, we shall keep the amount of shots we have of the star within the video
because that seemed to go down well with our target audience, and having their
approval is what we want to achieve with this video.

8. Throughout the process of planning and creating our music video, we have been
inspired by many indie artists, most of these being relatively unknown but very
artistic bands and artists, such as General Fiasco, First Aid Kit, and Funeral Suits.
But, one of our most affluent inspirations has to be Florence and the Machine, as
she‟s similar to our chosen artist Lana. We wanted to encompass the independent
and strong female star in our video which is embodied in both Lana and
Florence, so we wanted to know if this comes off in our video. Upon asking, we
found that 2 people thought that it did actually remind them of the work of
Florence Welch, whereas two people said no, and one said unsure. This means that
from the rough cut to final cut deadline, we will keep up with using indie stars as
inspiration, as it will make the video be more relevant to our target audience.
Also, just because two people said no, does not mean that the video is not
successful, as it shows that our music video so far is original and unique, which is
what we wanted to achieve, and something that indie music/music videos is all
about.
9. What would you suggest that we improve in our rough
cut to make it more suitable/enjoyable to the target
audience?
I wanted to find out what improvements members of our target audience would
suggest to us which we could incorporate into our rough cut before the final cut
deadline. Two of the people we had asked suggested that we darken some scenes
(specifically the bathroom scene and the scene with the masked men) to make it
more eerie and suitable to both song and genre. This is something which we intend to
do by using effects on Premiere Pro such as brightness and contrast, we‟ll turn down
the brightness and increase the contrast slightly to darken it and add more prominent
colours. One person suggested improving the lip syncing in the video, and made a
comment saying that it wasn‟t in time all the way through. This is something which we
have noticed and will definitely improve to make it more professional, like a real music
video. On the whole, we have been given well constructed feedback for this question
which has benefited us, and we will build on all the comments made to ensure our
music video is the best it can be and appeals to our target audience.

Our video is largely visual, so we needed to have some feedback on this.
When I asked the 5 members from our target audience, 4 of them said they
liked the use of the visual shots, some said this was their favourite part of
the video, whereas others said that it worked well and fit the mood
displayed throughout the video. One person however commented saying
that they were not too fond of this but this was because they liked videos
with some form of narrative running through them. Based on this
feedback, and the fact the majority said the liked the visual aspect, we will
stick to it, and keep building on the visual shots we have incorporated into
our video.

genre?

Creating a star was a big part of this process, so we wanted to make sure our
audience could appeal to her, so I asked what they thought of her in this
questions. 4 people agreed and said she fit the indie genre well due to her
overall style, and would be a good representation of our star we will create.
However, one person said slightly, and commented by saying that she is more
indie that Lana Del Rey. This isn‟t negative though, as we wanted to make a
star that isn‟t a replica of Lana, so having someone that challenges and
stretches the boundaries slightly is good, and we will stick to this difference for
our final cut, as it shows that we haven‟t just made a star who‟s exactly like
Lana.
12. Overall Findings and What We Will Work Upon
Based upon the feedback given, we will now know what to improve upon in our video by the final
cut to ensure that it is both professional looking and appropriate for genre and target audience.
Firstly, we‟ll add filters to nearly all of the shots and colour correct them, in which we‟ll bring
out the orange/red tones in the shots. This will make it more appropriate for the overall look we‟re
trying to achieve. Based on audience response given from the rough cut, we‟ll also try and match
the lyrics to the visuals. We have started doing this and an example would be the shot which we
have incorporated into the video of our star being hugged, but the man not being able to be
identified as you can not see his face. At the time that it can be seen, the lyrics of the song are
“put your hands on my waist do it softly”, which will match what is being seen on screen at the
specific time.
Secondly, an improvement will we make is to finish the video, as by the rough cut deadline we
had not completely filled the whole 4 minutes, but we have now managed to do this, and are
currently focusing on just tweaking the colours in the videos to make it look professional and
appropriate.
Finally, we‟ll improve the lip syncing in the video and make sure it matches better so there isn‟t
parts where she‟s singing and it‟s out of time with the song.
Getting feedback from members of our target audience has been an invaluable part, and has
helped us greatly in knowing what to improve for the final product.
