1. KATY PERRY Final Cut
Feedback
IF YOU CAN AFFORD ME Ben Crofts
2. GATHERING FEEDBACK
To gather feedback I used an online survey tool and
distributed it via social networking websites (e.g.
Facebook).
The advantages of using this method is that it’s
quick and easy and can be sent to a wide number of
people – it also isn’t very time consuming.
The survey linked the participant to the Final cut
music video and then had a series of questions on
their opinions on it
Here are the results…
3. THE PARTICIPANTS - AGE
As you can see, the majority of participants were our target audience of teenagers.
This is important as we needed to focus on the opinion of our target audience – this
is who we kept in mind when producing the music video, so it’s this age group we
most want feedback from.
4. THE PARTICIPANTS - GENDER
Again, the respondents of my survey fit in with our target audience – we mainly felt
our music video appealed to females although males are not totally excluded. From
previous research females tend to be more interested in pop music videos.
5. HOW MUCH DID YOU ENJOY WATCHING
THE MUSIC VIDEO?
Although this may seem a very vague question, it is in fact very important. Pop
music videos tend to be very entertaining and engaging – if our audience felt the
music video wasn’t enjoyable to watch then we will have failed to have kept our
music video to Katy Perry’s ‘fun and lively’ theme seen her music videos.
The results were very pleasing, with all participants enjoying watching the music
video
6. COMPARED TO OTHER POP MUSIC VIDEOS YOU
MAY HAVE SEEN.. RATE THE FOLLOWING..
(1 = Poor, 5 = Excellent)
7. ANALYSIS
For costuming our average rating was 3.89/5 which I felt
was really good and important and costume was
important in establishing the stereotypes (e.g. geek) in
our music video. Equally our use of characters (the
stereotypes) in the music video was rated 4/5 on
average.
4.11/5 for our camera work was also really pleasing –
we made effort to ensure the pace of editing was fast to
fit with the convention of a pop music video.
We received 4/5 for props, again important in
constructing the image of our characters and their
stereotype.
4/5 for our storyline was a really good result – the
storyline is often the most important factor in Katy
Perry’s music video and other pop music video. A bad
storyline for a particular audience will make the
audience feel the music video is boring and not
appealing to them.
8. WHAT DID YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE MUSIC
VIDEO?
I enjoyed it because The plot/theme fit well with
it seemed to show a the song and overall it made
meaning the song :) sense
Good storyline!
funny and good for
teens
It made sense, the lip sync was
very professional. By watching it.
Loved the shots of Kelly
The video sticks to the main
laying down, it looked
theme of the song, and it feels
really professional and
like Kellys song, not Katy
exactly what a Katy
Perry's. This is a positive aspect
Perry shot looks like.
because the way it was all put
Also the geek
together, it feels very
costumes, vey KP!
professional and not an amateur
attempt.
9. ENJOYMENT COMMENTS
It was really pleasing to see that one respondent
related the storyline to the teenage age group – our
target audience!
Comments shown that respondents enjoyed the
storyline which as I’ve highlighted previously, is
important to a pop music video and something we
wanted our target audience to be able to relate to.
Some commented on how we kept consistent with
conventions of other Katy Perry video and her
existing brand identity of being young & cheeky.
Someone also felt our female character (played by
Kelly) made the video her own whilst keeping
consistent with the K.P. identity.
10. WHAT DO YOU FEEL COULD BE
IMPROVED?
I think some of the acting
was a bit amateur and
silly, such as when they There is one shot where the
were dancing in the camera leads off the green
studio. screen/studio shot which
looks slightly unprofessional.
Use of props
could of
been more
often.
11. IMPROVEMENT COMMENTS
One respondent felt some of the acting was amateur and silly such as the
scene where the male and female character are in the studio dancing
together (see above!). To some, this may seem silly however we felt it was
consistent with Katy Perry’s brand identity of ‘young and fun’ that appeals to
our target demographic. Although we do appreciate it may not appeal to
everyone.
12. IMPROVEMENT COMMENTS
One respondent quite rightly pointed out that you can see the corner of the
studio in one of the shots (as above). We really liked this shot and felt seeing
the corner of the studio may be a nice effect (almost to show our character is
broadcasting her message to men about how to win her love). It doesn’t seem
to have it’s desired effect and upon reflection I feel we should of removed it.
13. IMPROVEMENT COMMENTS
One respondent said there could have been more use
of props – this is something I do agree with,
particularly as it was a pop music video and you tend
to see lots of props and extravagant locations!
However, we were working to a limited (if anything!)
budget and relied on those little objects that would
make a big difference. We appreciated how
important mise-en-scene was and really made a lot
of effort to ensure we used props where needed and
carefully as they can be vital for setting a scene. Had
we had more of a budget props would of course been
much much more frequent!
14. A GOOD IMPROVEMENT..
A really good improvement that we picked up from our roughcut
feedback was more use of the ‘bubble gum pop’ colour you see
in other pop music video very often using lots of bright ‘loud’
colours.
Using Final Cut Pro we have achieved this and feel it is a lot
better!
On the left is before editing and the right after editing!
15. CONCLUSION
Overall myself and my group were happy with the
comments we received for our final cut.
We received some really positive feedback which has
reflected our consideration of our target audience
throughout the project.
We find the improvement comments useful and will
be going through these in more detail in the
evaluation stage.
We will be using this feedback to evaluate our work,
in detail – using this feedback to support our
evaluations.
