How to reduce
unwanted electrical and
acoustical noise when
recording.
S
Intro

S Hello, my name is Nathan Brown from New Brunswick

Canada, and today I am going to cover how to reduce
unwanted electrical and acoustical noise when recording.
Listen to your space
(acoustical noise)
S Every time you setup to record, you always want to

remember you are recording a instrument in a space.
S You mostly want to have a clean sound. Get really quiet

and listen to the space you are recording in. The quieter
you are, the more unwanted noise you’ll hear.
Acoustical Noise

S Move away from noisy sources like fans and windows.

Create an isolated space for recording. Turn off noisy
sources like A/C, fans, heating, TV, and appliances.
Listen for electrical noise

S Every piece of gear makes electrical noise. To reduce

electrical noise, use fewer pieces of gear, shorter cables,
and use balanced cables.
Listen for electrical noise

S Electrical noise can also come through the power system

of your studio too. Appliances and dimmers can increase
the noise floor. Go around your house and turn them of to
reduce it. High quality gear also helps with noise. A
device made of lots of metal usually doesn’t have much
noise; devices made of lots of plastic usually makes more
noise.
Unnecessary Gain

S Boost level electrically as little as possible. Try moving

the mic closer to the source instead of increasing gain.
S A directional microphone isolates a source from a noisy

environment; use one of those.
Outro
S All these things have a major impact on the amount of noise. There

are some tools that can fix this during the post production process but
its not recommended.
S Quick Recap: Every time you setup to record, you always want to

remember you are recording a instrument in a space. The quieter you
are, the more unwanted noise you’ll hear.
S Move away from noisy sources like fans and windows. Create an

isolated space for recording.
S To reduce electrical noise, use fewer pieces of gear, shorter cables,

and use balanced cables.
S Electrical noise can also come through the power system of your

studio too.
S Boost level electrically as little as possible

I hope this helps you and I hope you enjoy the rest of the course,
