Task 1 and 2
1. Sound Unit
Task 1:
Sound is created by the vibration in the air which creates waves, soundwaves, which arrives at our
ears. The way sound moves/transfers inside a mic is; the sound comes into the Coyle and moves
down the magnet.
Reverb is created when the sounds stops but continues like an echo (slightly carries on but
eventually stops).
Anything that is hard or shiny is reflective.
Acoustic treatment helps something absorb sound.
The definition of soundproof is as follows: the design to stop sound coming in and out.
Foley is the process where the sound is mixed up with the touch of ambiance which then generates
the sound.
To record in a studio you need to have a diaphragm microphone to do the recording.
Exterior acoustics usually have high mid and low frequency as it varies out. Furthermore, the sound
has high bounce of off the wall and the bass normally comes from the corners/edges.
Interior environments it is uncontrolled sound. You can use interior environments because of bad
weather. You might need it for the brief scene indoors. Might need it for a specific location e.g. the
stairs.
Exterior location there lots of things in this environment like wind, natural light, sky, traffic noise,
atmosphere, weather etc. there are many purposes for using this environment e.g. scenes that
involve dirt, trees, animals, outdoor scenes etc. you will also need use this environment as it is hard
to replicate inside.
2. There are all different types of locations the studio is a lot better to record in if you want high quality
sound, but the exterior is a lot better for background noise and a more realistic sound. The interior
location is a bit of a backup location if the exterior location isn’t good enough.
Task 2:
There is a lot of different types of mics but one in particular is the dynamic mics.
Dynamic mics are useful when the sound source is close and reasonably loud, and where the sound
is predominantly bass or mid-range.
High-frequency detail reproduction isn't as good as with a capacitor mic.
Dynamic mics have the benefit of being tough and relatively inexpensive, and they don't require
phantom power or batteries.
As a general rule, the more expensive dynamic models will have the best sensitivity, the smoothest
frequency response and the most natural sound.
The bass roll-off of cardioid models can affect low bass reproduction unless the mic is close to the
source. Capacitor cardioid mics also exhibit the proximity effect, but they tend to have switchable
low-frequency roll-off filters, enabling the response to be better optimised for close or distant use.
3. Shure sm58 is a dynamic microphone which is handheld and usually used for interviews or when
presenting.
A microphone with a figure of eight polar pattern picks up the sound from in front of the
microphone and from the rear but not the sides – tend to use for interviews.
The condenser/capacitor microphone is called rode nt2 and is best suited for studios as it is better
quality and picks up sound better.
4. Clip microphones are called laveleir and they are usually used for speeches or talks.
On the other hand, the boundary microphone senheiser e912 is mainly used for conferences, where
there is large audiences.
5. A microphone with a figure of eight polar pattern picks up the sound from in front of the
microphone and from the rear but not the sides – tend to use for interviews.
Shock mounts for microphones provide basic protection from damage occurring.
Under below (the image) is a condenser microphone with shock mount.
Many different electrical connectors have been used to connect microphones to audio equipment
such as; mono jack, stereo jack, XLR, mini-jack.
