2. CONTAINER VESSEL
Container ships are made up
of several holds, each equipped
with “cell guides” which allows
the containers to slot into place.
Once the first layers of
containers have been loaded
and the hatches closed, extra
layers are loaded on top of the
hatches.
Containers are usually loaded
by specialized cranes or general
purpose cranes.
4. BULK CARRIER
These usually large vessels are divided up into several separate holds covered
by hatches.
Some bulk carriers are geared (usually a crane is located between each hatch)
to allow the loading and unloading of cargo at berths without the need for shore
equipment.
cargoes with a high weight such as coal, grain and ore.
7. General Cargo Vessels
A vessel designed to
handle cargo such as
bags, cartons, cases,
crates and drums, either
individually or in unitized
or palletized loads.
Packaged items like
chemicals, foods,
furniture, machinery,
motor vehicles, footwear,
garments, etc.
8. Feeder Vessel
Feeders collect shipping containers from different ports and
transport them to central container terminals where they are
loaded to bigger vessels. In that way the smallervessels feed
the big liners, which carry thousands of containers
9. Ro-Ro
Vessels
Roll on-Roll off or
Ro-Ro vessels
come in many
forms including
vehicle ferries and
cargo ships
carrying truck
trailers but the
major type used
for the transport of
road vehicles is the
car carrier.
10. Crude Carriers
There are two basic types of oil tankers: the crude tanker and
the product tanker. Crude tankers move large quantities of
unrefined crude oil from its point of extraction to refineries.
Product tankers, generally much smaller, are designed to
move refined products from refineries to points near
consuming markets.
11. Chemical Carriers
Chemical tankers/special tankers for transportation of bulk chemicals.
Modern vessels has a rule stainless steel tanks and may carry a lot of
different cargoes simultaneously because each tank has its own pump
and pipeline system for loading and discharging .
12. Liquefied Gas Carriers
Gas Tanker – Special Vessel for transport of liquid/condensed gas. The
most important cargoes are:
Ammonia, Ethylene,
LNG – Liquefied Natural Gas, contains Most of Methane)
LPG – Liquefied petroleum Gases (propane , butane)
13. Rrefrigerated Ship (REEFER SHIP)
A reefer ship is a refrigerated cargo ship; a type of ship
typically used to transport perishable commodities which
require temperature controlled transportation, such as
fruit, meat, fish, vegetables, dairy products and other
foods.
14. Tugs
A small powerful boat desig
ned for towing or pushing l
arger vessels. Also called to
wboat. Tugboats are
powerful for their size and
strongly built, and some
are ocean-going. Some
tugboats serve as
icebreakers or salvage
boats. Early tugboats had
steam engines, but today
most have diesel engines.
15. Ship designed specifically to carry more than 12 fare-paying passengers
whether berthed or unberthed.
A ship designed with one or more decks specifically for the carriage of
passengers, and where there is either no cabin accommodation for the
passengers (un-berthed)
Passenger Ship
16. History of Vessel
• The first ships designed to carrying
standardized load units were use in the late
18th century in England .
• In 1766 James Brindlev designed the box boat
“Starvationer” with 10 wooden containers, to
transport coal from worsley Delph to
Manchester by Bridge water Canal.
