Introduction to the
Shipping Industry
A classification of ship type by kind of cargo carried as
follows:
Vessel Types
General Cargo Ship
Cargo Ships
Break bulk cargo - a great variety of goods that must be
loaded individually, and not in intermodal container nor
in bulk as with oil or grain.
The term derives from breaking bulk — the extraction of
a portion of the cargo. May in bags, cases, crates, drums,
barrels.
Most common form of cargo for the history of shipping
till the late 1960s.
Types of Cargo Ships
1. Specialized types of cargo vessel
 Container ships; and
 Bulk carriers (technically tankers of all sizes are
cargo ships, although they are routinely thought of as
a separate category).
2. A bulk carrier, bulk freighter, or bulker is a merchant
ship specially designed to transport unpackaged bulk
cargo, such as grains, coal, ore, and cement in its cargo
holds.
Functions of Cargo Ships
To handle and stow a variety of freight.
E.G: forest products, manufactured goods, heavy
equipment, vehicles, machinery, bagged goods, steel and
food products, and containers.
Specialised : Combine general cargo + heavy lift :
transporting large, awkwardly shaped
components to refinery.
Equipped : own cargo handling facilities, cranes, hatch to
bear heavy loads.
Sizes Of General Cargo Ships
SIZES OF GENERAL CARGO SHIPS DEADWEIGHT
Small Handy size 20,000-28,000 DWT
Handy size 28,000-40,000 DWT
Handymax 40,000-50,000 DWT
Seawaymax largest size which can traverse the St Lawrence Seaway
Aframax 75,000-115,000 DWT
Panamax largest size which can traverse the Panama Canal
Suezmax largest size which can traverse the Suez Canal
Malaccamax largest size which can traverse the Strait of Malacca
Capesize traverse the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn in order to travel
between oceans
VLCC Supertankers between 150,000 and 320,000 DWT.
ULCC enormous super tankers between 320,000 and 550,000 DWT.
Vessel Types
Liquid bulk carriers (Tankers)
~ Look similar to bulk carriers but
the deck does not have hatch
covers and there and many
pipes, valves and vents
Dry bulk carriers
~ Easily identified by the
large hatches on the decks
that cover the cargo holds
Breakbulk carriers
~ Characterized by large
open hatches and fitted
with boom-and-winch gear
or deck cranes
Tanker Ship
Also known as a tanker
Design for transport liquid in bulk
Types of cargo:-
1. Oil tanker
2. Chemical tanker
3. Liquefied natural gas carrier (LNG)
4. Liquefied petroleum gas carrier (LPG)
Also have many pipes and vent
Oil Tanker
Known as petroleum tanker
Two (2) basic types of oil tanker:-
1. Crude tanker
More in large quantities of unrefined crude oil
from its point of extraction to refines
1. Product tanker
Much smaller, Design for more petrochemical
Sizes of Tanker
Super Tanker
1. Ultra-Large Crude Carrier (ULCC)
• 400 meter long
• Capacity 550 000 DWT (max)
• Ex: Hellespont Alhambra (now TI Asia)
2. Very-Large Crude Carrier (VLCC)
470 meter
Capacity maximum 315 000DWT
Chemical Tanker
 Normally have a sever of separate cargo
tanks which are either coated with.
 Coating with phenolic epoxy or zinc paint
or made from stainless steel.
1. Stainless steel
Required for aggressive acid cargoes
such as sulfuric and phosphoric acid
2. Epoxy coated tanks
Vegetable oil
Chemical tankers are purpose-built to
carry a wide range of chemical cargoes
in liquid form. The products carried are
mainly
1. sophisticated bulk liquid chemicals,
2. acids,
3. edible oils,
4. alcohols,
5. biofuels
6. clean petroleum products.
Passenger Ship
Primary Function - passenger
Secondary Function – freight
Three (3) types:-
ocean liner
cruise ships
ferry
Passenger Ship
OCEAN LINER
The passenger or passenger-cargo vessels transporting
passengers and often cargo on longer line voyages
CRUISE SHIP
which often transport passengers on round-trips
FERRY
vessels for day or overnight short-sea trips moving
passengers and vehicles (whether road or rail)
Ocean Liner
FUNCTION transport people from one seaport to
another along regular long-distance maritime routes
according to a schedule.
It’s also carry cargo, mail, and may sometimes be used for
other purposes
The term "ocean liner" has come to be used
interchangeably with "passenger liner", although it can
refer to a cargo liner or cargo-passenger liner.
Cruise Ship
FUNCTION Cruise ship or cruise liner is a passenger
ship used for pleasure voyages.
Cruise ships operate mostly on routes that return
passengers to their originating port.
Differential ocean liners do "line voyages" and typically
transport passengers from one point to another, rather
than on round trips.
An ocean liner for the transoceanic trade will be built to a
higher standard than a typical cruise ship, including
stronger plating to withstand ocean voyages
Types of Container Ship
1. Barges
2. Feeders vessel
3. Panamax vessel
4. Post-Panamax vessel
5. Super post-panamax vessel
6. Mega Containership
Barges
 Barges dedicated to carry container
with cell guides
 A capacity of 200 to 300 TEUs, are
used to serve the river trade
 For example, Hong Kong use the
barges for the feeder trade a long the
Peal River.
Barge
Feeders vessel
 containerships carrying up to 2,999
TEUs
 feeders vessel are 1st and 2nd
generation of container ships
Feeder Vessel
Panamax Vessels
 The largest ships that can pass through
Panama Canal
 Panama Canal limitation – 32.26m
(wider) & 12m (draft deeper)
 containerships carrying capacities
between 3,000 to 3,999 TEUs
 this vessel can only stack containers of
up to 13 rows on deck.
Panamax Vessel
Post-Panamax Vessels
Post-panamax vessel cannot pass
through the Panama Canal
These are vessels in excess of 3,999
TEUs and stacked containers up to 16
rows across on deck.
Post-Panamax Vessel
Super Post-Panamax Vessels
 Vessels which can carry containers 17
or 18 rows across the deck
 The 1st 17-row vessel was “Regina
Maersk” and put into operation in 1996
 Carrying capacities of up too 8,000
TEUs – 5th generation vessels
Super Post-Panamax Vessel
Mega Containership
Can accommodate 20 – 24 rows of
containers across on deck
Mega containerships are the 6th
generation vessels, also known as Ultra-
Large Containership (ULCS).

Editor's Notes

  1. Put simply, freight rates are determined on the basis of negotiations between shipping companies and forwarding agents/cargo owners, reflecting the balance between ships and cargoes available in the market. If the supply of vessels is too great, freight rates are most often low, whilst they are high when there is a shortage of vessels in the market. The global economy: generates the bulk of demand, either through imports of raw materials or trade in finished products. Raw materials available: some raw materials, especially agricultural products, are subject to seasonal fluctuations. In addition, raw materials trading is affected by overall demand and availability. Average haul: expresses the distance travelled by a ship before it reaches its final destination. For example, periodic closures of the Suez Canal have increased the average sea travel distance between the Arabian Gulf and Europe from 6,000 miles to 11,000 miles. Random shocks: shocks that affect the stability of the economic system such as natural disasters, wars, economic crises and the like. Transport costs: raw materials will only be transported from remote places of origin if transport costs have been reduced to an acceptable level.
  2. The world fleet: The size and composition of the world fleet clearly reflects the current supply of vessels. Fleet productivity: even though the size of the fleet is fixed, ship productivity provides an element of flexibility. Shipyard production: shipbuilding plays an active role in the adjustment of the fleet. However, it usually takes between one and three years from the ship is ordered until delivery takes place. Scrapping: scrapping also plays a key role in fleet growth. Freight earnings: Freight rates motivate ship-owners to adjust their capacity in the short term and to identify savings and improvement in the longer term.
