BruceDavidson-
Statueof liberty-
This is a photograph of the statue of Liberty which was taken in 1986 by Bruce
Davidson. This image is taken in portrait; this was done to show the height of
the statue in frontof two sky scrapers. In this photograph there’s only three
main points of emphasis, the main one being the statue of Liberty which is
placed in the foreground. This was done so the statue is the main point of
focus for the audience. There are also two sky scrapers which I believe to be
the Twin Towers; this makes the photograph even more historic and symbolic
as they do no longer exist and are both giant landmarks in America. Everything
in the shotis in focus; he could have had the statue in focus and the buildings
slightly out of focus to put more emphasis of the statue. The statue is
significantly placed in the middle of the two towers; this is to get all the
landmarks in shotat once. The image makes me feel aboutthe significance of
all three items in shotand how they are important to America. I also think the
framing is exceptionally good as it gets all three landmarks together in one
shot. CHANGE THE PARA ONPHOTOSHOP TO THIS
Arrest of a demonstrator-
This photograph shows a black woman being arrested by the police in Alabama
in 1963. This was in the time of major segregation and racism, this is a
powerfulpicture as it is set in the time whereblack woman had hardly any say
in what happens and weretargeted by the police due to racism. Birmingham,
Alabama was described by many as the worstcity in America for racism, this
makes the picture even stronger as it was taken in the thick of racismand
injustice towards black people. The people in the foreground arefocused
nicely; this contrasts to the background whereit is slightly out of focus. This
puts the emphasis on the people and shows theaudience the police taking the
women away. This image is also very symbolic as this was taken when racism
was big, especially in Alabama at this moment in time. It also shows the
revelation of overcoming racismand becoming moreaccepting of different
beliefs and points of views. The photograph gives off a suppressing vibeas it
shows two white police men dragging off a black female.
Led by martin Luther king-
This photograph shows a group of black males led by Martin Luther King Jr. this
photography was taken in 1965 in Alabama. This was also in the times off
severeracismso it links to the other photographs hetakes, this shows hetook
multiple different photographs around the sametime. It’s an extremely strong
image and makes me feel angry and sorry for the woman in the image, it also
brings up feelings of injustice justbecause of the colour of her skin. The
description for this photograph says ‘a group of civil rights demonstrators
march from Selma to Montgomery to fight for black suffrage.’ This also links to
the other image I analysed as they are in the same album of Bruce Davidson’s.
The people are in focus nicely whereas the background is out of focus, he did
this to put emphasis on the people and to catch the viewer’s eye sightstraight
away. Itmakes the viewer see the point of the image right away instead of not
quite understanding it at first like some other photographs.
Central park with birdsand snow
This photograph is set in New York in Central Park and was taken at 1992. Itis
an image of Central Park full of snow and pigeons with a woman Lola in the
middle of them. Someof the birds are out of focus and some are focused
nicely, my eyes were drawn straightto the woman in the middle of all the birds
and made me wonder what sheis doing in the snow with a group of birds.
Looking at this photograph makes me feel warm, happy and joyful. This is
because in the image it’s snowing and cold which contrasts to me. I really like
this image, I like how the buildings in the background arephased out due to
the fog and slightly out of focus butstill see able to the viewer. Italso has a
senseof nature involving the birds which contrasts to the human in the middle
of them.
Central park in winter-
This photograph is like the previous one, it’s of Central Park in the winter shot
in 1992. The faded silhouettes of the people in the background areout of focus
and barely visible to the audience. The white snow all over the floor make the
people a bit more visible as the two colours contrastand complement each
other. The tree’s all around the people make for good natural framing around
the image, Bruce Davidson used this in order to naturally frame the shotnicely
whilst getting everything in shot. Itlooks like there are two groups of two, one
with a dog, this photograph makes me feel the same as the other one. Warm,
happy and joyful. Itmakes me feel this becauseI see the snow and cold
weather so it makes me feel warmin contrast. I think the framing is really good
and the way the people are out of focus and contrastwith the snow aregreat
photography skills fromBruceDavidson.
The Dwarf-
This image is in the album of The Dwarf, it is of a dwarf with clown face paint
whilst smoking. Heis also holding flowers. For me this image connotes
different feelings and emotions, I feel this becauseclowns are usually used for
parties and fun times. This contrasts with people’s feelings as a lot of people
are afraid of clowns and havephobias. He is holding flowers and smoking at
the sametime, this is another contrastas flowers connotehappiness and love
whereas smoking connotes darkness and damaging your body. The dwarf in
this image is also used in a lot of his other photographs, heis always seen with
the clown face paint, and the clown has a slight smile on which again connotes
happiness through the face paint. Although he is in a few other pictures it is a
confusing image for the audience as they will be wondering what he is doing
and why he is holding flowers whilstsmoking. Thebackground is of a closed
down circus types place, this connotes him maybelosing his job or being
miserable during his job in the circus.
3 whitepeople sitting with 2 black people not communicating-
This image was taken in 1959 in New York and is in the album of Brooklyn
Gang. Itshows three white people sitting at the back of a bus next to two black
people. This was in the time of racial segregation and shows noneof them
communicating with each other, this emphasises the racial hatred of the
people in the image. There’s not much in the image however the five people
make the viewer’s think about the time this image was taken in and why they
are looking slightly away fromeach other. The look of disguston their faces
show how annoyed they are to be sitting next to each other. There are not
really any photographic styles used in this image, it is in black and white like
most of his other photographs and is shot fromstraightin frontof them.
Black Americansin back of policecar-
This image was taken in Alabama in 1963. Itshowstwo black American women
In the back of a badly nurtured police car. There is a split between them which
shows they can haveno communication with anyone, not even with each
other. There are multiple police officers outsidethe car guarding them and
some are talking to other people outside the car. This image was taken during
the time of racial segregation which shows the black Americans being treated
badly by the white police officers. The black women in the car looks fed up but
slightly used to being taken by the police, this shows thatthis has happened
multiple times to her which emphasises the racial differences during these
times. The man is contrasted to her however and he looks scared, annoyed and
worried with his head in his hands.
Boogie-
Boogie is a photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. His real name is
Vladimir Milivojevich and was born in 1969 in Serbia.
- This photograph by Boogie shows a man with his hood up
holding two pistols towards the camera. The way the face is blurred slightly
makes the viewer feel as if he doesn’twant his identity to get out, this is why
he is wearing a hood. The shot focuses on the guns as they are the main thing
in focus and are pointed directly at the camera lens. The person has a smile on
show and is showing off his teeth to the camera. This shows he’s happy whilst
holding these weapons and might possiblebe happy using them too. Itshows
the violence of the area they live in. This matches most of his other images too
as his photographs aremostly based in Brooklyn which is quite a violent area,
this is shown in the majority of his images. I think the use of focusing of the
guns really impacts the image as it makes it much more powerfulopposed to if
the face was focused and the guns blurred.
- This photograph is another similar one as it shows a man
holding onto a vicious but sad looking dog at the sametime. The man’s faceis
blurred out again and not visible to the viewer justlike the previous one. This
puts emphasis on him as his hood up makes it too hard to see him. The hood is
used in the same way as it hides his identity fromthe camera and the viewer’s.
If you look closely the man is actually smirking behind the shadows of his hood,
this creates an eerie feeling as wedon’t know whathe is doing or thinking. The
dog looks like a vicious type of dog as they are the ones usually seen in fights
and things. However becausehe’s close to the camera it makes him look sad
and as if he is not being treated right. I think focusing on the dog instead of the
man’s face really shows thedifferent feelings and emotions between the two
to the viewer.
- This image is really similar to the firstone and a lot of
Boogie’s work, it focuses on gangs and gun violence in Brooklyn. Thecamera is
focused on the gun instead of the faces, this puts emphasis on it and was used
as he wanted it to be the main point in which the viewer’s focus on. The faces
being blurred means it’s difficult to make out who they are but the expressions
are still visible, for example the one of the left is obviously smiling for a reason
unknown. They all have their hoods up or are wearing hats, this is evident in a
lot of Boogie’s photographs and it expresses the levels of danger in the area of
Brooklyn New York. The gun barrelis aimed directly down the sight of the
camera lens. This emphasis the sheer power in which one item has, it also
makes the image much more threatening toward the viewer.
- This is an extremely grotesqueimage as it involved a man
who has his eye in his hand and a boy touching the gap of where his eyeball
used to be. This shows theviewer’s that the area it is set in doesn’treact to the
gruesomescenarios that may occur. The young boy who is touching the empty
eye socket shows thatthe kids are not taken care of incredibly well as he is
allowing him to touch it which could lead to really bad diseases and illnesses.
The fact that the eye was taken out in his own home by himself and not in a
hospital shows thathe may not have the money and doesn’treally care about
things like infections, diseases or illnesses. The eyeball is actually slightly out of
focus and the man’s face is in focus, this puts emphasis on the expression he
has of losing an eye, which is neutral, instead of the gruesomeeyeball in his
hand. This takes someof the viewer’s focus off the eye however it is still an
unpleasant sight.

The dog looks like a vicious type of dog as they are the ones usually seen in fights and things. However becausehe’s close to the camera it makes him look sad and as if he is not being treated right. I think focusing on the dog instead of the man’s face really shows thedifferent feelings and emotions between the two to the viewer.
  • 6. - This image is really similar to the firstone and a lot of Boogie’s work, it focuses on gangs and gun violence in Brooklyn. Thecamera is focused on the gun instead of the faces, this puts emphasis on it and was used as he wanted it to be the main point in which the viewer’s focus on. The faces being blurred means it’s difficult to make out who they are but the expressions are still visible, for example the one of the left is obviously smiling for a reason unknown. They all have their hoods up or are wearing hats, this is evident in a lot of Boogie’s photographs and it expresses the levels of danger in the area of Brooklyn New York. The gun barrelis aimed directly down the sight of the camera lens. This emphasis the sheer power in which one item has, it also makes the image much more threatening toward the viewer. - This is an extremely grotesqueimage as it involved a man who has his eye in his hand and a boy touching the gap of where his eyeball used to be. This shows theviewer’s that the area it is set in doesn’treact to the gruesomescenarios that may occur. The young boy who is touching the empty eye socket shows thatthe kids are not taken care of incredibly well as he is allowing him to touch it which could lead to really bad diseases and illnesses. The fact that the eye was taken out in his own home by himself and not in a hospital shows thathe may not have the money and doesn’treally care about things like infections, diseases or illnesses. The eyeball is actually slightly out of focus and the man’s face is in focus, this puts emphasis on the expression he has of losing an eye, which is neutral, instead of the gruesomeeyeball in his hand. This takes someof the viewer’s focus off the eye however it is still an unpleasant sight.
