Tim Burton Films
Director, producer and screenwriter Tim Burton is known for films such as
Beetle juice and Edward Scissor hands. He has a quirky style that has made him
an iconic director. In 1992, he directed 'Batman Returns', which was a lot darker
than the original proving how much creative input he had. It was one of the
most successful films of all time, setting the opening weekend box office record
of $50 million and going on to make $400 million world wide.
What inspired his
gothic/dark work?
Tim Burton defined a whole other genre of films. He creates Gothic, dark films with sinister atmosphere. His
style has been influenced by many artists and other factors. His isolation as a child is reflected in his work. Tim
Burton, as a child, enjoyed to watch horror and monster movies. His favorite actor was Vincent Price. He was
the protagonist in many horror movies such as “The House of Wax”. Tim Burton was also influenced by
impressionists’ and expressionists’ work, and especially German expressionists. Also, he is fond of Vincent Van
Gogh’s work.

What aspects of his films
are visually similar?
• Burton loves to use some of the same actors (Winona Ryder) have appeared in two or three Burton movies,
these guys pop up over, and over again. Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Christopher Lee, Jeffrey Jones.
• In Burtons films he usually uses techniques such as jump cuts and fading ins that are synchronized to the
music to present suspense and tension. This is done to grab the attention of the audience .
• Flashbacks is common in burtons films for example Willy Wonka flashbacks to his sad candy-free childhood
in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also Bruce Wayne dreams of his parents in the batman. Burton does
this because he wants the audience to have a stronger connection with the character and to have sympathy
for them, also it’s the best way to portray the characters pain.
• All most all of his film have the similar aspect in a sense that they have a character with an appearance that is
not considered normal(weird and bug-eyed),there role is usually to scare the audience.

When we go and see a Tim Burton
film we expect it to be dull with un-
saturated colors and selective colors
used. We expect it to Dark with dark
lighting and shadowing used often,
which tend to reoccur in his films and
have become a motif of his unique
directing style.
