Robert Capa was a war photographer who covered five major conflicts - the Spanish Civil War, World War 2, and wars in the Middle East and Asia. His photos provided scenes from the environments and events of war that changed perceptions of what war and its human toll looked like. Don McCullin was another war photographer known for documenting the impacts of war on people, including taking the first photo of a soldier suffering from mental stress. Modern photographer Remy Oshlik also captures images from active war zones to depict the realities of conflict and the roles of individuals defending their nations or causes.

Robert Capa's War Photography
1.
2. ROBERT CAPA
Robert Capa was a photographer in war. He covered five wars
which were the Spanish civil war, second Japanese war, WW2,
Arab Israeli war and the first Indochina. His photos consisted of
scenes of war and the environment around the war and events
during it. His photos change the effect on how people see war
as well as those people fighting in war.
3. The photographer has captured a scene from the war showing me taking cover
in the water before getting to land. The main focus are the people in the water
they are the darkest and stand out to the background because the background
is quite the same colour and is either grey or white. The people are also in the
center quadrant and not to the right or left this also makes it the first thing we
look at. The light is natural sun light so the light would be coming from the top of
the photo and in the top left. The clothes have not been specifically chosen they
are outfits they needed to wear for that day in war. The photo was taken at a
social distance at this maybe because its in a war zone and needs to be more
formal and safe. It was also taken from eye level the gets the clearest shot and
the photographer cant really get the best angle because of the conditions and
event he is in. The high contrast lighting between colours make the viewer look
at the people in the image as they are a lot darker and stand out because they
are central and take most of the middle of the image up. The photo looks like a
long shot as there is some of the location in the background and also shows the
people in the shot clearly. The photographer has placed the main part of the
image in the middle as this is where we will focus on first which is want the
photographer wants you to do.
4. The photographer has got a part of the
event in the shot but has aimed to get
scenery in the back ground to capture
such a nice day but on such a bad day to
be fighting. The boat and men are taking
up the bottom half of the quadrants with
the sky as the top quadrants. The
photographer has not told them to get into
a certain position for or dress in clothes
that he thought they would look nice in but
are just in the clothes they must wear. The
photographer is documenting the war and
events with in it.
The image is an extreme long shot and
it shows more of the location than the
people as they are only small specs. It
was taken from eye level shot this
gives the clearest shot that the
photographer can get.
The photo taken has been positioned to
make both the setting and people are
looked at the tones make the people
stand out a lot more as they are darker
compared the the background that is a
lot lighter and plain. The colours also
make it look gloomy and sad as there
are no bright colours. Use this sort of
contrast creates sharp areas of an
image in the light and dark areas. The
photographer has kept the
unnecessary part of the image out the
way and at the bottom as we don’t
need to see thisand has yet kept the
people he wants to focus on in the
middle as well as the surroundings
around them.
5. DON MCCULLIN
Don McCullin was also another war
photographer who took pictures of events and
buildings. He also took the first photo of a man
suffering with stress in war. His photos showed
those who were luckier and not in such events.
It showed people the effects war had on people
whether it was mental issues or health issues.
6. This picture has been taken as a landscape
shot to show the scenery around the people in
the picture. The people in the shot probably
been told to stand there in a position but they
haven't had to dress up because these clothes
are what they were wearing. The people are
sort of set to the right of the shot to also get
the horrible scenery they came out to see. The
black colour shows darkness in the picture
and terror the people have because even
those are dressed in death black the only
white shade of the picture in the smoke from a
fire or bomb that has went off. This shot was
taken from eye level to focus on a specific part
of the event going on. The high contrast
lighting of colours makes the image sharp in
certain areas. It was also taken from a
decently long way away making it a long shot
as it has a some background to show what's
happening and also focuses on the people in
the shot. The people take the right half of the
image up and the event going on is on the left
side. The composition of the image is
horizontal this may mean rest in some way,
the war or fire may have ended and people
The photographer wants to
show the event that has
happened as well as the people
who are affected by it keeping
them evenly together. He has
only slightly moved the people in
the image too the right as we
can also focus around them and
not just making them the primary
target in the photo.
7. This photo has been specifically taken to show the effects and
how the soldier are coping in the war. The soldier takes the
whole frame up with no background and is a portrait taken
photo. This photo may be sent back to the news papers to show
the mental effects people are having or research about mental
illness. The photographer has told the man to get into a specific
sitting position and how he is gripping his gun but the facial
expression could not be change because of the mental effect.
The black and white colours are tonal and make the mans eyes
stand out even more than they already do with the blank freaky
look he gives you. The background contrasts together as one
side is white and was is black this shows the light to the dark.
The photo was taken from eye level and is a close up focusing
on the main mostly with only little background in it. The high
contrast lighting creates pool and streaks of shadows on the
man. The photographer has taken a close up shot so the man
mostly takes up every part of the image so we can only focus on
him however the face is at the top of the image I think this is
because we usually look at the middle of the image but nothing
interesting is going on so we look at the rest of the image as we
can find out what the rest of the image holds such as his
distraught and none emotional image .
8. REMY OSHLIK
Remy Oshlik is a modern day war photographer
who takes pictures on the frontline and shows
us the conflict between the world and
individuals in war fighting to win. It shows
everybody what people are doing to defend us
and the events that are happening and what
people have to do because of these events
some people may change their views on war
because of what they see.
9. The purpose of this photo is to cover the events
and everyday life for those who fight for their
country. The lighting in the picture is natural sun
light and doesn’t have time to frame the picture
because of the danger around him. In a way he is
documenting the war. They have not been put into
specific clothes these are everyday clothes which
you would wear around anywhere even the
glasses in the bottom right. The photographer as
placed people in each area of the image making it
busy he has also shown what's going on in the
background as we have an an idea of what is going
on.
The two men on the left and right
quadrants are more darker than
the rest and the photographer has
not added a flash. He might of
taken this shot at sunset or sun
rise this could be to capture the
setting. But we don’t know whether
this photo shows us men standing
up for their country fighting back or
a propaganda photo of a terrorist
group to post over the internet or
print in a newspaper.
It is a low angle shot this hows
and boosts the importance of
the people in the image. The
image shows a lot of information
of what is going on in the image.
The top of the frame has a man
with a gun and it takes most of
the middle of the shot up and
this shows that he has a lot of
power. The shot is from a
personal distance this focuses
on what is happening and
because these are either friends
10. This picture has been shot from a back angle
showing a silhouetted man with a gun defending
a position. The picture is quite dark and the only
light is natural sun light coming from the door this
is why from the back this is the reason for the
silhouette and the man creates a lot of shadows
in the image . The photographer maybe taking
photos to take back for the newspaper to see
what is happening in the war and the progress.
The image may also make you ask numerous
questions like is he killing or protecting
somebody? Is a group of civilians or family in his
house? The main thing you look is where he's
aiming but you also the next lightest object to the
rest of the image which is the gun that glows up
because of the sun light. The photographer has
made sure there is enough space on the left side
as he can show the lighting and shadows in his
photo. The low key lighting creates a shadow behind the man and only has little lighting coming
in creating a streak of light in the picture and the darkness around the person helps him
standout out as he is lighter because of the sunlight, this also creates a silhouette on the
mans back. The shot was taken from close up it obvious that the main object of this
picture is the man as we can only look in the direction of the light and all that we can see
as the darkness overcomes most of the image. The eye level shot helps us get the
clearest view of the man as you cant see him that well.
