ENVIRONMENT
 Surroundings esp. as affecting lives
 Overall structure within which we
operate.

The
Planet
EARTH
The only known planet where
life exists.
Then we have to safe guard its
inhabitants.
Environmental Crisis is no longer
imminent.
It has already occurred
We have destroyed, adultrated
nature, robbed ourselves and
the beauty of universe.
Matter Of Concern
 India’s Environmental Credentials Are In Doldrums.
Recently Published Statistics In A Daily News Paper
Present A Scary Picture of Our Country.
(Where Eating, Drinking, Breathing has become a
health risk for its citizens).
* The soil has become toxic.
* The water poisoned and
* The air is becoming saturated with lethal SPM
(Suspended particulate matter)
Ground population is increasing & ground level
of water is decreasing.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCENARIO
LAND
 30 MILLION SPECIES ARE estimated on the earth of which
man is only one.
 7.5 Lac species comprise insects.
 41,000 species are vertebrates and 2.5 Lacs are plants.
 The remainder are Invertebrates, Fungi & Micro Organisms.
 About 1/4th of these Species are at Risk of Extinctions.
Two Major causes:-
(a)The Destructions of natural habitat
& hunting of Animals For Their
Commercial Value.
(b)Pollution of the land Air & Water.
Once Any Species Disappears, it
Never Appears.
* 75 Species Became Extinct Every Day As Estimated.
 As Non Human Species Extinct, Human Population Continue To
Increase And For Feeding The Growing Human Population It Requires
Efficient Utilization Of Available Farmland.
* Land Degradation Causes Desertification.
 Mismanagement of Forests Creates Barren Land Through Deforestation.
 Deforestation is responsible for 1/3rd of the CO2 and 10% of the
warming added to the atmosphere.
* Trees are very important component of life. They recycle moisture
through their leaves, absorb heat of the sun and soak up CO2.
The second biggest business of the world
“TOURISM”
is also becoming one of the causes of environmental stress.
AIR
Some Facts:-
 An Estimated 5.9 Lakh Indians, Die Each Year From Indoor Air Pollution.
 Where As Ambient Air Pollution Snuffs Out Life Of An Estimated 84,000
People Every Year.
 India Is Spending About Rs. 4,600 Crores Per Year To Make Up For
Health Damages Caused By AAP (Ambient Air Pollution) But Still HHR
(Health Hazard Rate) Is Very High.
 As On Today, Most Of The Indian Cities Are With Million Plus
Population. SPM Levels Are Dangerously High.
 Any Fuel Smoke Is Posing Greatest Risk To The Health Leading To
Respiratory, Cardiovascular As Well As Cancer Diseases.
 According To Unep (United Nations Environmental Programme) Most Of
The World’s Cities Are With Unacceptable Air Quality.
Developing Countries - Produce Residue By Burning Coal,
Wood, Charcoal etc. As Fuel.
Developing Countries

OZONE LAYER
 CFCs Are Found Aerosol Propellants From Refrigeration Units, Air
Conditioners & In Aerosol Sprays, Foam Styrofoam, Used In Fire
Extinguishers & In Solvents Used For Production Of Building And Packing
With A Life Time Of 50 – 160 Yrs.
CFCs Released 30 years ago are just now reaching the stratosphere,
(With out ozone protection incidences of Skin Cancer Cataracts & Blindness
Will Multiply).
[Rests 15-50 Kms. From The Earth’s Surface]
Shields The Planet From UV-Radiations.
CFCs (Chloro Fluoro Carbons)
Deplete the Protective
Ozone layer
Because CFCs Traps Heat And Their Release is Responsible for 15 to 20% of Global
Warming.
Green House Gases
 A Natural Occurrence In Our Atmosphere Is The
Exchange Of Green House Gases.
CO2 + H2O Vapors Combine to create Moisture of a Green House
 This Exchange Maintains the earth’s atmospheric temp.
which is affected by deforestation & Pollution.
 The projected temp. increases due to the loss of green
house gases is 3 degree centigrade/Century.
 This increase in temperature will affect all aspects of
the planet. Predictions are that the polar ice caps will
melt & this in turn will cause rise rivers and in sea
levels, which may wash away low inlets in the country.
Summer Monsoon will intensify
 Few More Events Also Effect The Earth’s Atmosphere And
Temperature.
They Are:- Volcanic Eruptions
Nuclear Reactor Accidents
Industrial Accident
Bhopal Tragedy Was The Most Horrible Happening In
1984 In Which Approx. 2880 Were Died & More Than
20,000 Were Disabled.
 Environmental Illness - (Indoor Toxic Over Load)
(1) Cigarette Smoking In The Room.
(2) Invisible Accumulation In Air Tight Buildings.
(3) Toxic Fumes Emitted From The Hemical Used In Building
Plants, Wall Papers, Press Board Furniture, Synthetic Fibers
Used In Carpets Etc.
Water
Few Facts:-
1) 71% of the earth surface is water.
2) Water is essential for sustaining life on earth.
3) Water poisoned by one country affects plants
and animals in the other countries.
The Facts are Simple
•Life on earth Relies on clean water.
•94% of the planet’s water constitute salt water.
•Just 6% of fresh water supply is available on earth and
99% of this fresh water is either lies frozen in the form of glaciers or
burried underground.
•Fresh clean water in a limited commodity
And
69% of this limited supply is used for food production.
23% is used for industrial production (when most of them reuse their
own water) And
8% is used Domestically.
The Result is Serious Enough
 It means we have only 0.48% of drinkable water.
 1.3 Billion People Lack Access To Potable Water World
Wide.
Over 1 Billion People Lack A Sanitary Means For Disposal
Of Human Waste.
About 40% Of World’s Population Relises On Shared Water
Sources. (Because One Nation May Use Its Availabel Water
Supply For Waste Disposal, Whereas A Neighboring Country
May Use This Same Water As Drinking Water.)
4.5 Million Children Under 5 Yrs. Age Die Every Year
Because Of Bad Water Management.
(Diarrhea, Hepatitis And Cholera From Infected Water Is Often The Culprit.)
The Result Is serious Enough
 It Becomes more important when we realize that half the people in
developing countries obtain over 30% of their protein from Marine
Life.
Red Tides : Waterways Also Suffer From Both Accidental And And
Deliberate Increased Water Pollution From Tourism, ¼ Part By
( Oil Spills, Leakage Of Radioisotopes From Nuclear
Submarines) ¾ Part By (Industrial And Land Run Off (I.E.
Fertilizers & Pesticides) Into Rivers Creates marine Blooms Of
Algae Known As red Tides and These Toxic Tides Deplete
Oxygen From Water
And
Without Oxygen Dead Zone Occurs.
 According To A 1990 Report By Gesamp (Group Of Experts On
Scientific Aspects Of Marine Pollution) The Fishing Industry
Dumps 1,50,000 Tons Of Plastic Fishing Gear Into Sea Every Year.
Solution For Pollution
 Concerted and sustained effort by the people (Government,
Administration, Judicary, Media etc. – etc.)
 Fundamental shift in the paradigm for any perceptible and
sustainable change.
 Focus should be on finding & Not just painting fingers.
 Enforcement of environment – friendly steps at grass root level
not only include punitive measures for offenders.
 By upholding environment rights of the people and discouraging
greedy and powerful people from over riding the laws.
 Since all the rivers are becoming sewers please stop the use of
polythen bags.
 Make Harmony with nature
 Become pure and adopt pure path to planetory transformation.
 Stop waste generation, start waste management and think of
waste utilisation.
 Our adaptability must be very high with the positive attitude and
in a right spirit.
 By adopting a simpler and more environment friendly practices
and life style. (i.e. Change in habit.
(A) One Birth Day - One Tree
(B) One Marriage Anniversary – Two Trees.
(C) One Child Birth – One more Tree
You Know, What is “KARMA”
“As You Do, So You Become
Every Action in you The Soul.
These Imprints ultimately Mould Your Character And Destiny.
When You Will Understand This Principle,
You Will Pay More Attention
To Bring Out Your Best To Everything You Do.”
POLICY STATEMENT ON THE
HUMAN ENVIRONMENT
Policy statement on the Human Environment was adopted by
the Lions International Board of Director in October 1972.
“The continuing policy of Lions clubs International to foster
and Promote the general welfare; to help create and maintain
conditions under which man and nature can exists in
productive harmony and fulfill the social, economic and orher
requirements of present and future generations of mankind.”
Activities For Individual
(Please make a determination today)
 6.4 billion people world wide can make a difference.
 Environmentally conscious individuals must be a “Green Consumer”
 Following are the suggestions
 Recycle – (Paper, Glass, Plastic and other products)
 Buy in Bulk – eliminate unnecessary packing Give excess paint to a
friend. Don’t dispose toxic material in a land fill.
 Use rechargeable batteries, both mercury & cadmium batteries leak in
landfills.
 Use recyclable grocery bags avoid disposable bags.
 Avoid purchasing pet animals and birds.
 Drive less – walk, bicycle or carpool more.
 Maintain your Air Conditioners any leakages is a source of CFC.
 Be conscious on your personal actions like smoking cigarettes, throwing
garbages, make abuses etc. – etc.
 Use Detergents of low Phosphates.
 Conerve water when shaving, Brushing, Showering or washing dishes
and clothings.
Activities of Individual for
Environment Protection
 Working together, can affect the environment
world wide.
 We can serve as community leaders in
protecting the environment.
 Other groups will model their E. Ps
(Environment programs.)
Activities for Environment
Protection
The following are suggested activities :-
 If your community needs one, please start any
product recycling programs.
 Form GREAG (Grass root environmental action
groups.) You may recruit the assistance of other Lion
clubs or other local service groups.
 Adopt a park and maintain its litter-free appearance.
 Trees are ideal living memorials.
 Plant trees in honour of birth days, anniversaries or a
death of a loved one.
 Sponsor as Arbor day, (Traditional tree planting day).
Activities for Environment
Protection
The following are suggested activities :-
 Sponsor a nature or ecology club in a local
school and provide an award for the best
environmental idea.
 Adopt a high way and maintain its litter-free
appearance.
 When sponsoring any service activities,
arrange for recycling bin for paper and
aluminum waste products.
Activities for Environment
Protection
The following are suggested activities :-
 Organise a community clean up day or week of
any prominent place.
 Conduct educational programs as noise pollution
and its effects on hearing offer advice on
solutions for reducing noise levels.
 Work with the local media. Provide information
on your work efforts to improve the quality of
lives and encourage others to participate.
Activities. . . . .
 Consider launching an environmental programme as
one of the following dates.
* April 22nd is Earth Day, designated by “Earth
Day International”.
* The last Friday in April is Arbor Day, Planting of
tree is traditional on this day.
* 5th June is World Environment Day, designated
by UNEP.
* 1st weekend in June is Environmental sabbath,
this event is celebrated by major religions throughout
the world in unison with “World Environment Day”.
Through shear numbers. One can affect change.
Activities . . . . .
 Sponsor an Environmental seminar. Each one of us
can present a different topic for public debate.
 Encourage smoke free environment in public places.
(You know! Air Ports, Golden Temple, International
Head Quarters of Lions Club are smoke free
buildings).
 Organise a community compost day, Collect organic
debris and lawn clippings and demonstrate the ease of
composting in a central location.
 Urge Automobile repair shop and vocational training
programme to recycle motor oil. (You know? Every
year 180 million gallons of motor oils is poured down
drains or dumped into land-fills in the USA alone.)
IT IS NOT THE END
OF THE END
IT IS BEGNNING
Thanking You

AIR Some Facts:-  An Estimated 5.9 Lakh Indians, Die Each Year From Indoor Air Pollution.  Where As Ambient Air Pollution Snuffs Out Life Of An Estimated 84,000 People Every Year.  India Is Spending About Rs. 4,600 Crores Per Year To Make Up For Health Damages Caused By AAP (Ambient Air Pollution) But Still HHR (Health Hazard Rate) Is Very High.  As On Today, Most Of The Indian Cities Are With Million Plus Population. SPM Levels Are Dangerously High.  Any Fuel Smoke Is Posing Greatest Risk To The Health Leading To Respiratory, Cardiovascular As Well As Cancer Diseases.  According To Unep (United Nations Environmental Programme) Most Of The World’s Cities Are With Unacceptable Air Quality. Developing Countries - Produce Residue By Burning Coal, Wood, Charcoal etc. As Fuel. Developing Countries SO2 NO2 CO THROUGH INDUSTRIES , POWER STATIONS AND CARS
  • 8. OZONE LAYER  CFCs Are Found Aerosol Propellants From Refrigeration Units, Air Conditioners & In Aerosol Sprays, Foam Styrofoam, Used In Fire Extinguishers & In Solvents Used For Production Of Building And Packing With A Life Time Of 50 – 160 Yrs. CFCs Released 30 years ago are just now reaching the stratosphere, (With out ozone protection incidences of Skin Cancer Cataracts & Blindness Will Multiply). [Rests 15-50 Kms. From The Earth’s Surface] Shields The Planet From UV-Radiations. CFCs (Chloro Fluoro Carbons) Deplete the Protective Ozone layer Because CFCs Traps Heat And Their Release is Responsible for 15 to 20% of Global Warming.
  • 9. Green House Gases  A Natural Occurrence In Our Atmosphere Is The Exchange Of Green House Gases. CO2 + H2O Vapors Combine to create Moisture of a Green House  This Exchange Maintains the earth’s atmospheric temp. which is affected by deforestation & Pollution.  The projected temp. increases due to the loss of green house gases is 3 degree centigrade/Century.  This increase in temperature will affect all aspects of the planet. Predictions are that the polar ice caps will melt & this in turn will cause rise rivers and in sea levels, which may wash away low inlets in the country.
  • 10. Summer Monsoon will intensify  Few More Events Also Effect The Earth’s Atmosphere And Temperature. They Are:- Volcanic Eruptions Nuclear Reactor Accidents Industrial Accident Bhopal Tragedy Was The Most Horrible Happening In 1984 In Which Approx. 2880 Were Died & More Than 20,000 Were Disabled.  Environmental Illness - (Indoor Toxic Over Load) (1) Cigarette Smoking In The Room. (2) Invisible Accumulation In Air Tight Buildings. (3) Toxic Fumes Emitted From The Hemical Used In Building Plants, Wall Papers, Press Board Furniture, Synthetic Fibers Used In Carpets Etc.
  • 11. Water Few Facts:- 1) 71% of the earth surface is water. 2) Water is essential for sustaining life on earth. 3) Water poisoned by one country affects plants and animals in the other countries.
  • 12. The Facts are Simple •Life on earth Relies on clean water. •94% of the planet’s water constitute salt water. •Just 6% of fresh water supply is available on earth and 99% of this fresh water is either lies frozen in the form of glaciers or burried underground. •Fresh clean water in a limited commodity And 69% of this limited supply is used for food production. 23% is used for industrial production (when most of them reuse their own water) And 8% is used Domestically.
  • 13. The Result is Serious Enough  It means we have only 0.48% of drinkable water.  1.3 Billion People Lack Access To Potable Water World Wide. Over 1 Billion People Lack A Sanitary Means For Disposal Of Human Waste. About 40% Of World’s Population Relises On Shared Water Sources. (Because One Nation May Use Its Availabel Water Supply For Waste Disposal, Whereas A Neighboring Country May Use This Same Water As Drinking Water.) 4.5 Million Children Under 5 Yrs. Age Die Every Year Because Of Bad Water Management. (Diarrhea, Hepatitis And Cholera From Infected Water Is Often The Culprit.)
  • 14. The Result Is serious Enough  It Becomes more important when we realize that half the people in developing countries obtain over 30% of their protein from Marine Life. Red Tides : Waterways Also Suffer From Both Accidental And And Deliberate Increased Water Pollution From Tourism, ¼ Part By ( Oil Spills, Leakage Of Radioisotopes From Nuclear Submarines) ¾ Part By (Industrial And Land Run Off (I.E. Fertilizers & Pesticides) Into Rivers Creates marine Blooms Of Algae Known As red Tides and These Toxic Tides Deplete Oxygen From Water And Without Oxygen Dead Zone Occurs.  According To A 1990 Report By Gesamp (Group Of Experts On Scientific Aspects Of Marine Pollution) The Fishing Industry Dumps 1,50,000 Tons Of Plastic Fishing Gear Into Sea Every Year.
  • 15. Solution For Pollution  Concerted and sustained effort by the people (Government, Administration, Judicary, Media etc. – etc.)  Fundamental shift in the paradigm for any perceptible and sustainable change.  Focus should be on finding & Not just painting fingers.  Enforcement of environment – friendly steps at grass root level not only include punitive measures for offenders.  By upholding environment rights of the people and discouraging greedy and powerful people from over riding the laws.  Since all the rivers are becoming sewers please stop the use of polythen bags.  Make Harmony with nature  Become pure and adopt pure path to planetory transformation.  Stop waste generation, start waste management and think of waste utilisation.  Our adaptability must be very high with the positive attitude and in a right spirit.  By adopting a simpler and more environment friendly practices and life style. (i.e. Change in habit. (A) One Birth Day - One Tree (B) One Marriage Anniversary – Two Trees. (C) One Child Birth – One more Tree
