2. ENVIRONMENTALISM
โข Environmentalism or environmental rights is a broad philosophy, ideology,
and social movement regarding concerns for environmental protection and
improvement of the health of the environment
โข Theophrastus and many renaissance scholars always speculated the
impact of human activities on climate change
โข The first concern over the environment came in the 1800s during the
industrial revolution
3. THE GREEN MOVEMENT
Photograph taken by William
Anders in 1968
Environmentalism evolved to become a
multifaceted movement, the green movement dealing
with various environmental issues.
In 1972 the worldโs first nationwide Green party was founded in
New Zealand
5. DEFORESTATION
โข Forests are cut down for their lumber, and ecosystems are destroyed to create
roads, strip mines and gravel pits. Destroying these habitats upsets local
ecosystems and leads to plant and animal extinction if the species are unable to
relocate or adapt to their new surroundings.
โข As early as the 1850s, in the Madras Presidency alone,
35,000 trees were being cut annually for sleepers in
railways.
In early 19th century oak trees started
disappearing in England
6. GROWTH OFWORLD POPULATION
โข In 1600, approximately one-sixth of India รญs landmass was under cultivation. Now
that figure has gone up to about half. in the early nineteenth century, the colonial
state thought that forests were unproductive. They were considered to be
wilderness that had to be brought under cultivation.
โข Human overpopulation, continued population growth,
and overconsumption are the primary drivers of biodiversity loss and the 6th
mass species extinction.
Today humanity uses the equivalent of 1.5 planets to provide the resources
we use and absorb our waste
The world's ecological capacity is simply insufficient to satisfy the ambitions of
China, India, Japan, Europe and the United States as well as the aspirations
of the rest of the world in a sustainable way
7. AIR POLLUTION
โข bubbles trapped in Greenlandโs ice revealed
that we began emitting greenhouse gases at
least 2,000 years ago
Green house gases have increased the earthโs
temperature by 0.6 degree Celsius and it is expected
to rise by 1.5 degree Celsius by 2050
Acid rain, climate change and smog all damage
the Earth surface. Contaminated water and gases
seep into the earth, changing the composition of
soils. That directly affects agriculture, changing
crop cycles and the composition of the food
we all eat.
8. PLASTIC POLLUTION
โข The beverage industry is one of the major players in the plastic packaging
market โ especially the companies that produce soft drinks, like Coca-Cola
and PepsiCo. According to Greenpeace, Coca-Cola Company alone
produced more than 100 billion plastic bottles in 2016 out of which 90 %
is not recycled
โข Plastic, which is a petroleum product, also contributes to global warming. If
plastic waste is incinerated, it releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere,
thereby increasing carbon emissions.
โข In total, half of all plastic produced is designed to be used only once โ
and then thrown away.
9. DAMAGETOTHE EARTHโS BIOLOGICAL
SPHERES
โข Mr Lester R. Brown in his thoughtful book,The Global Economic Prospect, points
out that the earthโs principal biological systems are four โ fisheries, forests,
grasslands, and croplands โ and they form the foundation of the global economic
system.
โข They provide virtually all the raw materials for industry except minerals and
petroleum-derived synthetics
โข Due to unsustained consumptionfisheries collapse, forests disappear, grasslands
are converted into barren wastelands, and croplands deteriorate.
โข . Since the tropical forest is โthe powerhouse of evolutionโ several species of life
face extinction as a result of its destruction.
โข It has been well said that forests precede mankind; deserts follow.
10. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
โข โDevelopment that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet their needsโ, i.e., without stripping the natural world of
resources future generations would need.
The idea of sustainable development was first given by the Brundtland Commission
report in 1987
It said to be one of the most revolutionary ideas in environmental sciences
because provides a mechanism to ensure environmental conservation along with
economic development and supports the needs of both the present and the future
generations
11. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS OF
THE UNITED NATIONS
"blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all".
The SDGs were set in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be
achieved by the year 2030.
12. โA DECADE OF ACTION
TO REPAIR THE
EARTHโ
The most prestigious global
environmental prize in history
15. THE ROLE OF INDUSTRY
This company works with power companies to
provide a personalized energy consumption
report to their users which helps them to
figure out the devices which utilize maximum
energy and use said devices effectively.
It also uses behavioral science and subtle social
pressure to encourage users to consume
energy effectively.
1n 2016 this company generated 2 terawatt
hours of energy saving
TheVirginAtlantic airways gave a selected
group of pilots feedback on their fuel use
In the course of a year they were able to
save 6800 tons of fuel and reduced their Co2
emissions by 21000 tons
16. Delhi-based Chakr Innovation curbs air
pollution with the worldโs first retro-fit emission
control device for diesel generators. It
captures ~90% of particulate matter emissions
from the exhaust air without reducing energy
efficiency. The diesel soot captured from the
exhaust is converted into inks and paints.
In 2015, Adidas partnered with the
environmental organization Parley for
the Oceans to turn marine pollution into
sportswear. In 2019, Adidas expects to
make 11 million pairs of shoes with
recycled ocean plastic. Adidas says the
partnership has prevented 2,810 tons of
plastic from reaching the oceans.
